Introduction to
construction aND BUILDING SERVICES AT GC You’ve got options: Gloucestershire College Imagine looking at a housing estate or hospital and being able to say “I helped to build that!” The construction industry requires skilled people who understand about sustainable building practices and the latest technology. There is a high demand for tradespeople who’ve developed traditional skills within the sector such as bricklaying and plastering. The vast majority of the UK’s 2.35m strong construction industry workforce have gained their qualifications through a college course or Apprenticeship. Recent figures have uncovered that the scale of skills shortage in the booming
construction sector has risen by almost 40% in the past year. There are 18,000 vacancies in the construction industry in recent months according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) data, a rise of 5,000 when compared with the same period in 2013. It is predicted that this figure will continue to rise as there will be a far greater demand for an up-to-date workforce as the industry continues to look at increasing the energy efficiency of buildings, to cut carbon emissions from all areas of the building process and to reduce waste produced on site. There’s currently a demand for 5,000 more trained staff every year in the South West alone with this figure expected to rise annually.
Studying for a Construction and Building Services training programme at Gloucestershire College will put you on the right path to build your skills and knowledge in this growing sector and to progress up the career ladder. With that thought, there isn’t a better time to consider studying a construction qualification at Gloucestershire College, whether it’s a full-time course or an Apprenticeship.

community and to the county. He seemed very informed and I know he is very passionate about apprentices. He was interested in how young people had made their choice into apprenticeships.”
Principal, Matthew Burgess welcomed the Duke before giving the Royal party a full tour of the Gloucestershire College Tewkesbury campus where they met with catering, hairdressing, engineering and construction students.
The Duke then addressed an audience of over 100 business people, apprentices and students with a compelling speech.
The Duke described the event as “absolutely outstanding” as he met students and apprentices. Matthew Burgess, Principal, said the Duke’s visit was “fantastic” for the College and its apprentices. “This is a good advert for the business
“Young people need to understand as much as they possibly can what the pathways are into the working world. “The other part of this is to recognise what people are achieving in the world of apprenticeships.” “If we do not give young people the experience, how are they supposed to learn? How are they supposed to get into the workplace,” he asked.

WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY? By Steve Weldon, Guidance and Recruitment Manager at Gloucestershire College “There are a huge range of trades and professions available in the construction and building services industries some of which are easily brought to mind such as bricklayers or plumbers and others less well known such as lightning conductor engineers. One thing is certain, for those with the relevant skills and aptitudes, future job prospects are looking very healthy with the recent Strategic Economic Plan for Gloucestershire identifying construction as one of the fastest growing sectors. Large scale housing developers are looking for qualified technicians and management trainees and the Hinkley Point Nuclear Project, which will be the largest construction project in Europe, is expected to draw on the existing workforce locally providing further opportunities for those with the skills to backfill. So for people with good practical skills, the ability to work quickly and accurately as part of a team and with reasonable fitness - there’s bound to be a role that would suit.
There is a wealth of information available on the National Careers Service: website https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk
Whichever pathway you choose, the Advice team at Gloucestershire College are here to help. Steve Weldon For example, if you are interested in a career as a plasterer, you will need: • the ability to work quickly and accurately • maths skills for calculating surface areas and volumes of materials • a reasonable level of fitness • creative skills for fibrous plastering and other decorative work • an awareness of health and safety issues
If you would like to be a Construction Manager in the future, you will need: • a relevant foundation degree, HNC/HND or degree in a related area • several years industry experience • the ability to lead and motivate a team • excellent organising and planning skills • to be a creative problem solver You can also visit the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) websites for more information about construction careers and qualifications: www.ciob.org www.citb.co.uk Whichever pathway you choose, the Advice team at Gloucestershire College are here to help you. You can book an appointment to talk through your options by contacting Student Services on 0845 155 2020. Good luck!”
Wesley is a former Gloucestershire College bricklaying student. After completing a Multi Skills course covering plumbing, electrical installation, plastering, brickwork and carpentry, Wesley chose to enrol on the bricklaying Level 1 and 2 Bricklaying Diploma to learn his trade.
“I would recommend the bricklaying course at Gloucestershire College to anyone who would like to learn a trade. The lecturers are excellent, they have been really supportive and I learnt something new every day. During my time at college I can see the improvement in the standard of my work and how my skills have developed over time.”
Plumbing students invent new product to take to market Gloucestershire College is committed to providing students with lots of opportunities to explore their entrepreneurial flair throughout their course. A good example of this is a group of plumbing students who took part in a national Market Maker competition, where they pitched their innovative product; EcoFlow. EcoFlow is a device created to harness the power of waste water, and after impressing a panel of local judges with their sound business proposal, the team won a place at the International Market Maker Experience in London’s Pall Mall.
The student team presented their product at a real trade fair, which included setting up booths, created their own promotional materials and producing online demos and prototypes. The EcoFlow team were highly commended by the national judges, and are currently raising money for a patent search. They are also exploring a number of avenues to further develop this product. Well done!

UK needs to double the number of recruits into engineering A report by the not-for-profit organisation EngineeringUK has highlighted the need to double the number of annual recruits into engineering until 2020 to meet expected demand.
A Level and providing robust and consistent careers information for young people that promotes the diversity of engineering careers available and the variety of routes to those careers.
Engineering companies are projected to have almost 2.75 million job openings between 2010 and 2020, 1.86 million of which will need engineering skills. Of these approximately 87,000 per year will require people with a degree (including foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate) qualifications. Currently the UK produces only 46,000 engineering graduates each year. There will also be demand for around 69,000 people qualified at advanced apprenticeships or equivalent level each year.
Job prospects in engineering are a good news story. It is crucial, however that Government, business, professional bodies , education and the wider engineering community continue to work together to ensure that the UK has the talent pipeline ready to meet demand.”
EngineeringUK chief executive, Paul Jackson said “What the report makes clear is the need to lay the groundwork early. This means doubling the number of young people studying GCSE physics as part of the triple science, growing the numbers of students, both males and females studying physics

“Studying an Apprenticeship and learning the vital vocational skills needed for a successful career alongside my on the job training with Corin, a global leader in orthopaedic innovation, has given me the best start I could hope for in the engineering industry. I am now studying towards a HNC in Mechanical Engineering to further progress my career.”
WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN ENGINEERING?
By Steve Weldon, Guidance and Recruitment Manager at Gloucestershire College “Engineers use science and technology to find creative solutions to practical problems. There are many types of specialisms in engineering including construction, manufacturing, processing, communications, transport, fuel and medical technology. Engineers have helped to shape the modern world through designing and building roads, bridges, dams, televisions, personal computers, the mobile phone, nuclear power stations, reservoirs, pipelines and microchips – and will always be in demand to help to adapt the latest development in technology to the latest problems that we face. The Royal Academy of Engineering’s report on “Jobs and Growth”, forecasts that, between 2012 and 2020, the UK economy will require 830,000 professional scientists, engineers and technologists, largely to replace those leaving engineering practice e.g. through retirement. This works out at over 100,000 new professionals each year – and that’s just in the UK! British engineering has a global reputation and leading to opportunities to work on projects around the world. This skills gap was also identified in a recent review for the Department of Business Industry and Skills (BIS) and as a result there is a lot
of support from government, businesses, and education providers for those interested in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical (STEM) subjects – so if you’re interested then it’s a great time to be involved.
Engineers have helped to shape the modern world. Steve Weldon In order to specialise engineers need higher level qualifications such as HNCs, HNDs, Bachelors, or Masters Degrees – so you’ll need to be willing to continue your professional development either on a full-time course or alongside employment. As an engineer, you’ll need the following personal qualities and skills: • Technical ability • An interest in mathematics, science and technology
• The ability to combine an analytical, logical approach with creativity and imagination to solve problems • To work well as part of a team • The ability to encourage other people’s ideas • To be flexible and able to compromise • Strong communication skills to write reports and to explain complex information to people from non-technical backgrounds • Organisational skills to plan your own time and to co-ordinate resources • A willingness to take on responsibility and to lead and motivate others • Good IT skills - a lot of engineering work involves using computers • To be willing to keep up-to-date with advances in engineering. You can find out more about careers in Engineering on the Engineering Council website (www.engc.org.uk), and on the Prospects Graduate Careers Site (www.prospects.ac.uk). Whichever pathway you choose, the Advice team at Gloucestershire College are here to help you. You can book an appointment to talk through your options by contacting Student Services on 0845 155 2020. Good luck!”
Bloodhound Supersonic Car inspires students During National Science and Engineering Week 2014 Gloucestershire College’s Gloucester campus was home to the magnificent Bloodhound SSC prototype and Project Team.
Bloodhound is the Supersonic Car that has been designed to achieve the ultimate land speed record of 1000mph. The Director of the Bloodhound Project, Richard Noble, describes it as “the engineering adventure for the 21st century”. The Bloodhound team are using the design of this car as a basis for inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers and this event is the opportunity for young people to become part of this adventure. The 14m long jet-powered vehicle, which travels at the speed of sound and burns one-and-ahalf tonnes of fuel on every single run, has a 135,000 thrust-horsepower engine which makes it six times more powerful than every single Formula 1 car on the starting grid. Students from the College were given the opportunity to see the Supersonic Car up close and to meet with the design team behind the Bloodhound project to hear about the project’s
development and its challenges. The Bloodhound visit coincided with a wider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Exhibition at the College which included a simulated driving experience, science displays and a huge range of interactive workshops. Student Ismail Kholwadia, 19, said: “It has been fascinating. I didn’t think I would ever have the chance to see something like this close up. You can’t imagine how fast this is and it is huge!” Peter White, Vice Principal for Marketing, Recruitment and Customer Service said, “Hosting the Bloodhound SSC provided a fantastic opportunity for students to experience at close quarters this advanced technology. There is a high demand for skilled scientists, mathematicians and engineers across the UK, and STEM subjects are high on the education agenda at the moment. It is important for young people to experience first-hand, the wide range of possible future career opportunities that are open to them and how exciting the world of maths and engineering can be.”
