WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN SPORT?

By Steve Weldon, Guidance and Recruitment Manager at Gloucestershire College “The most visible role in the sports industry is as a professional player or athlete but there are a huge range of sports-related careers overlapping with other major industries including advertising, media, and the health sector. Although the sports star can be both aspirational and inspirational – the majority of the workforce are employed in equally rewarding supportive roles such as coaching, personal training, sport psychology, teaching, and physiotherapy amongst many more. Because the industry is extremely broad in its range of employment prospects, it needs people with a diversity of skills and qualifications and this presents many exciting opportunities.

There are a huge range of sports-related careers overlapping with other major industries. Steve Weldon In 2010 the sports industry added a huge £20.3 billion to the English economy, representing 2% of the total economy and employing well over 400,000 people. This places the sports sector in the top 15 industry sectors in England - overtaking other large sectors including telecoms and legal services. To embark on a career in sport, it is essential to choose a direction which suits you most. For some it will be being paid to participate in sport, whilst for others it may be supporting people to enjoy sport safely. If for example you are considering a career in sports physiotherapy or psychology there are a range

of accredited higher education courses on offer that lead to full professional status and opportunities to work with people taking part in sports at all levels. As a potential professional sportsman or sportswoman it is essential to participate in your sport at club level from a young age to develop a high level of skill, and be in a position to be recognised by “talent scouts” who look out for promising individuals who can be nurtured to excellence in their particular sport. Working in sports generally, you will need the following personal qualities and skills: • To work well as part of a team • To be physically fit and healthy and committed to regular exercise • To have strong motivational skills and individual stamina • Have an interest in science related subjects • The ability to encourage and develop other people’s abilities • To be flexible and able to compromise • Strong communication skills to communicate in a variety of situations • A willingness to take on responsibility and to lead and motivate others • To be willing to keep up-to-date with advances in sport and sports technology. WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN TRAVEL AND TOURISM? By Steve Weldon, Guidance and Recruitment Manager at Gloucestershire College “The UK tourism sector is large and growing. Output has increased by over 5% per year for the last decade, and will continue to grow by a similar amount over the coming decade. The UK is currently the seventh leading destination in the world in terms of revenue from inbound tourists and UK residents spent £13 billion on holidays in this country – so there’s plenty of opportunity for those with the right skills! The tourism workforce has a large proportion of younger workers with 34% being under 25 years old – compared to an average of 13% across all sectors. It’s a great starting point for many roles in the service industries given

specific roles will require – did you know for example that you need to have colour-normal sight to be cabin crew? For younger people considering their options it’s worth noting that the majority of those working overseas need to be over the age of 18 have a clear police record. You can find out more about the range of jobs available as well as the entry requirements on the National Careers Service website which has lots of good information on its job profile pages: http://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk

The UK is currently the seventh leading destination in the world. Steve Weldon the core transferable skills of customer care, communication, and enthusiasm required for success. The sector comprises many different industries and sub-industries, including services such as retail travel, currency exchange, tour operators and tourist boards. It also covers passenger transport including coach, aviation, rail and waterways, and visitor attractions such as museums, theme parks, zoos and heritage sites. As well as job prospects closer to home many people are drawn to the tourism sector due to the travel opportunities provided by some of the job roles such as cabin crew or resort representative. You’ve got options: Get your foot in the door with real life experience Experience in the sport, travel and tourism, public service and outdoor adventure sector is really important and this is why Gloucestershire College offers students a wide range of opportunities to take part in work-related experiences throughout their programme of study. Students studying towards a Sport qualification are not only given the opportunity to go on trips to see the sports industry at work, but will also lead many of their own sporting activities. The Gloucestershire College Sport department is a valuable resource to the local school sports network, with students running large events throughout the year for primary and secondary schools; including Cross Country events, the Gloucester Schools’ Swimming Gala at GL1, Sportshall Athletics and leading the organisation of the Sportsability Festival for disabled students at the Sandford Park Leisure Centre in Stroud. As part of their course GC Sport students also undertake work experience in a setting of their choice to gain a further insight into the industry and to build upon the skills they have learnt in the classroom. Whilst studying towards an Outdoor Adventure Academy qualification in the Forest of Dean,

students complete an extensive enrichment programme, designed to develop leadership skills and to provide excellent work experience. The enrichment programme involves students organising and delivering a range of activities to help them build on their confidence, leadership and management skills. Uniformed Public Services students are extremely fortunate to be studying their qualification at the College as Gloucestershire College is the only college in the county to offer students the chance to gain real life experience of working in the army. This had led to many previous students starting their career in the RAF, police force, Royal Navy and fire service. Students studying towards a Travel and Tourism qualification are also given the chance to undertake work experience to help develop the skills and knowledge taught in the classroom. The courses include different educational trips and visits to local tourism organisations and attractions. This year for example, students visited Legoland, Oxford and Warwick castle. Students were also able to participate in airline raft training as part of their studies.

Sport students on the pitch at Wembley

Sport Former sport student George Stockton took part in the in London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. George is profoundly deaf yet has always worked hard against the odds to compete alongside his hearing peers. He was selected to play for the County of Dorset under 16’s Football Team when he was 15 and has completed his Level 2 FA Coaching qualification alongside studying for a Sports Coaching Diploma.

“The best thing about being a Sport student was the friends I met and the staff who were really energetic and supportive. I hope in the future to begin a career in the sport industry and I know that my time spent with GC and the skills that I have learnt, will contribute to me achieving my career goals.”

[Gloucestershire College] provides excellent resources and a wide range of extra opportunities for learners to enhance their learning in a purposeful, attractive and welcoming learning environment. Ofsted 2013

Gloucestershire College’s very own Sport students took centre stage at the semi-final of the Rugby League World Cup trophy between England and New Zealand at Wembley stadium last season. Sport students Sam Golder, Jennifer HewsonBarsellotti, Isobel Lane, Kieran Ireland, Ashley Ireland, Sian Warburton, Connor Hamblett, Martel Sutherland, Jack Williams, Laura Hatherall and Kieran Gill had the great honour of being flag bearers for what was most certainly the ‘game of the tournament’ when English hearts were broken in the last 22 seconds of an outstanding match against New Zealand. The opportunity came via the University of Gloucestershire All Golds who worked closely with the Rugby Football League to ensure that Gloucestershire and the South West Region were represented at the tournament. Gloucestershire College Sports Maker, Paul Hewitt, who accompanied the students said, “The day was an amazing opportunity for

Gloucestershire College and the GC Sport students. Not only did they get to be the guard of honour, they carried the rugby league flag onto the pitch for England v New Zealand game and stood alongside all the players, which was a massive honour. They also got the chance to mingle with the England and New Zealand players, and also met rugby legends Jonathan Davies and Shaun Edwards. A fantastic day that the students and staff will not forget!” Gloucestershire College Head of Sport, Scott Pollok, was delighted that Gloucestershire College were given the opportunity to engage with the Rugby League World Cup. He said, “Throughout the sport courses at Gloucestershire College our students are given opportunities that can only enhance their experience whilst studying here, this is certainly one that these students will treasure for the rest of their lives! We at Gloucestershire College look forward to continuing this partnership in the future to inspire the next generation of rugby league players and fans.”

Former Public Services student recognised as VQ Learner of the Year 25-year old Aaron Freeman, a former Gloucestershire College Public Services student was named VQ Learner of the Year 2013 in recognition of his outstanding achievement in undertaking a Public Services vocational qualification (VQ) at Gloucestershire College. Aaron was 19 when he started at Gloucestershire College, but this proved no barrier to integration. He worked hard to support himself to complete a Public Services Diploma, gaining a distinction, before going on to study Criminology and Psychology at the University of Gloucestershire. Since leaving education, Aaron has utilised the skills and understanding garnered from his vocational qualification to help launch and run his own successful business – Battlesports – which offers people the opportunity to experience

‘live’ versions of computer-based war games in Longhope, Gloucestershire. On receiving the award Aaron said: “I would never have been able to get to where I am today without my Public Services Diploma and I want to use this achievement to pass on the knowledge I have accumulated to other learners who want to get ahead either in their career or in further education.” The Public Services team at College said; “We encourage students to work hard throughout their course in order to reap the rewards. The team here have over 50 years of experience, ready to pass onto our learners. We treat our students like adults, giving them responsibility for their own goals, but are always here to support each individual to reach their full potential. If you’re looking for a challenge, the Public Services course at GC is the right course for you!”

Outdoor Adventure Academy students help Wye Valley AONB Earlier this year, Gloucestershire College Outdoor Adventure Academy students joined forces with the Wye Valley ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ (AONB) to improve the local area in the Forest of Dean. The student volunteers helped to remove bracken and small birch trees which had taken over a piece of land at Staunton Meend near Coleford, in a bid to restore the natural beauty of the area whilst learning about the importance of field studies and conservation. Sarah Sawyer, Community Links Officer for Wye Valley AONB said: “It has been a real pleasure to introduce the students to the heathland restoration project at Staunton Meend. This is an excellent example of a proactive college reaching out into their community and making a real improvement to the nature value of the Wye Valley AONB landscape. We are extremely grateful for all of their help.”

Martin decided to go back to college to change career, following a period working in the distribution industry.

Ashley studied the Uniformed Public Services Level 3 Diploma at Gloucestershire College. Upon completing his qualification Ashley secured a position in the British Army.

“I decided to return to college as I was unsure of my career prospects in my previous job. I was extremely interested in the outdoor industry and wanted a new challenge. The Outdoor Adventure Academy offered me great experience in leadership and environmental volunteering, and after completing my studies I have been able to secure a position at PGL Adventure as a Multi-Activity Instructor at their Osmington Bay centre. A great result!”

Gloucestershire College students made an impression when they ‘took over’ Cheltenham Town Football Club hospitality for the day earlier this year. The bright students supported by a team of GC staff, hosted hospitality guests at the home game at the Abbey Road Stadium to represent the College as the Club’s back of shirt sponsors. Travel and Tourism students Melissa Callender and Harriet Foote hosted a welcome champagne reception in addition to Catering students, James Ho, David Henley and Georgina Louise Booth who prepared, cooked and served the hospitality suite meals alongside the resident chef for 120 people.

The students said: “It was brilliant, awesome, fun, exciting, and a really good experience.” Julie Haines, Head of School for Travel and Tourism said; “We were very impressed with the maturity of the students and the quality of their customer service skills, as well as their engagement with guests throughout the day.“ Well done!

“Studying the Uniformed Public Services Diploma has given me a great start in my career and has provided the underpinning knowledge I needed to become a Snapper in the British Army, providing military engineering and technical support to the armed forces wherever they may be. The course taught me that anything is achievable when you put your mind to it.”
