HENEVER I try to make a grand romantic gesture, it inevitably falls flat on its face. Let’s take last year as an example. My girlfriend and I were hurtling towards our four-year ‘anniversary’ and in a rare moment of spontaneity, I decided to really push the boat out and bought her a box of crackers and a packet of Twinings tea. Bear with me at this stage. “Oh she said,” slightly taken aback when unravelling the parcel. “Crackers... and tea.” I waited for a few seconds. “Are you trying to get me to drink tea?,” she said. “But you know I don’t like tea.” I had hoped the parcel would be self-explanatory but with the situation becoming ever more farcical – a discussion on the best cheese to eat with the crackers began – I was forced to explain. “I think you’ll find they’re Ritz crackers,” I
@WeekendGlos announced, feeling ever-so slightly smug. “And those are afternoon tea bags.” Ahh, the lightbulb moment. I had booked a table for two at the Palm Court lounge at The Ritz – I figured nothing says romance like a round of cucumber finger sandwiches. We can look back on it now and laugh but at the time the mechanics of my supposedly romantic gesture rather spoilt the moment. I’ll stick to flowers and chocolates for Valentine’s Day – at least with that particular cliché there’s no room for confusion. Love is very much in the air for this week’s edition with our fabulous gift guide, tips on how to get the most out of speed dating and an interview with dishy folk pin-up Seth Lakeman. Hold on to your hats – and have a great weekend. Jonathan Whiley weekend@glosmedia.co.uk 01242 278072
This issue’s contributors were asked: Where would you go for a romantic getaway?
Helen Blow
Kate Parker
Ben Falconer
Anna Freeman
Cheranne Hack
“Loathed as I am to admit it, I’m not really much of a romantic and neither really is my husband,” says feature writer Helen. “However, long weekends away are few and far between when you’ve got children so you’ve got to take any excuse. “With that in mind I’d quite fancy a break in the south of France for the warmth, culture and scenery. Somewhere around the Canal du Midi.”
“Our romantic getaway destination is Rome,” says personal shopper Kate. “We try to get there at least once a year. The hotel we visit is situated right in the centre of the city. “It has an elegant, calm courtyard where the locals head for a drink and a beautiful walled ‘white’ garden. You can step straight from the hubbub of the cobbled streets into this calm oasis. The scent of jasmine in the evenings is sublime.”
“For Mrs Falconer and I, there’s nowhere more romantic than the west coast of Scotland,” says Stroud Life editor Ben, who reports onThe Casual Vacancy for this week’s issue. “Our first holiday together was near the set of Hamish McBeth near Skye and I’ve been in love with the place ever since. “I proposed on a white sandy beach overlooking the Small Isles and the island of Islay is where we honeymooned.”
“Venice is my ideal romantic destination for a weekend away,” says Anna who shares her dating tips on this week’s health and wellbeing pages. “It’s a very romantic city with beautiful buildings and art galleries. “Even in cold weather there’s so much to do. “Italians are natural lovers and very passionate, uplifting people – I’d go in a heartbeat.”
“It would have to be a weekend in Paris, the home of romance, theatre and art nouveau,” says Cheranne who writes this week’s dating feature. “I was lucky enough to visit the City of Art last autumn when the leaves were golden. “It’s so beautiful; it has its own unique identity and quirky culture and I love the fashion and haute couture.”

Village Life
When J K Rowling's The Casual Vacancy was filmed in Painswick last year for its TV adaptation, it caused quite a stir. WEEKEND catches up with the cast and crew to find out what went on in the village of Pagford
A
GAINST a backdrop of the rolling Cotswold hills, the much-anticipated adaptation of Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s first adult novel comes to our screens next weekend. Filmed in and around Stroud last summer, The Casual Vacancy stars Michael Gambon, Keeley Hawes and Julia McKenzie. The plot centres on Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. Behind its pretty facade, however, is a town at war: rich at war with the poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands and teachers at war with their pupils. Gloucestershire viewers will be able to spot scenes filmed in Painswick, Bisley, Minchinhampton and Northleach, among others, during the three hourlong episodes beginning on BBC 1 next Sunday. Filming took place at Stroud police station, Magpies FC in Stonehouse, Northleach, and the Cotswold Care Hospice shop in Painswick, which was temporarily turned into a funeral home. As her first adult novel and also her first book after the hugely successful Harry Potter series, The Casual Vacancy was eagerly-awaited and the fastest-selling in the United Kingdom in three years. Within three weeks of publication, the book's total sales topped a million copies. So fans will be keen to see how scriptwriter Sarah Phelps has translated the village of Pagford and all its intrigues to the screen. Compared by critics to the novels of Charles Dickens through its depiction of the ordinary lives of an English village community, JK Rowling peels away the veneer of social niceties to reveal the rotten heart at the core of many a seemingly perfect life. Episode one sets the scene, as a popular parish councillor dies suddenly and his empty council seat soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the village has ever seen. Factions develop, particularly concerning whether to dissociate the village with a local council estate, the Fields. Several families are in the spotlight for various reasons, including the Mollisons, the Fairbrothers and the
Weedons. Michael Gambon plays council chairman Howard Mollison, who is against proposals to include the local council estate within Pagford, believing it to be a ghastly eyesore. “He’s not a very nice bloke and is quite cunning,” says Michael. “He wants to do well in the world and is not nice to people who aren‘t like him.” Michael admits he likes to get his teeth into a good villainous part. “There’s more meat in them. I’ve played lots of tough characters and heavies, horrible parts. “Howard’s quite cut off in his little world and he and his wife just want to expand and get more power. Even at 70 Howard strives to have more.” Michael said he loved the locations in Gloucestershire where the series was filmed. “It was breathtakingly beautiful
She's the mother-inlaw from hell. She thinks she is the village leading light Julia McKenzie who plays Shirley
but I don’t know how I’d get on living somewhere like Pagford; I like a lot more noise around me which is why I like living in London.” His wife, Shirley, is actually worse than Howard. Played by veteran actress Julia McKenzie, she comes out with terrible things and is very ambitious. “She’s the mother-in-law from hell,” says Julia. “She thinks she is the village leading light and she appears to be in control, particularly of her marriage.”
Surely this is a very different departure for Julia, who is known for her portrayal of Agatha Christie’s beloved detective Miss Marple, as well as her role in Fresh Fields as loveable housewife Hester Fields? “It is such a different part for me, so this has been wonderful because she’s violently different. “You can see through this woman in a second; the whole face, the outfits. She thinks it gives the village tone; she’s a great social climber.” There is a great deal of jealousy between Shirley and her daughter-in-law Samantha, played by Ashes to Ashes star Keeley Hawes, so how do the two actresses get on in real life? “Shirley absolutely despises Samantha and Samantha feels pretty much the same way about Shirley,” says Keeley, who is
married to Shirley’s son, Miles. “It was such good fun to play as I couldn’t feel more differently myself towards Julia, who I am totally in love with. “It’s awful really to play those scenes with pure hatred and there is this little bit of you that is actually appreciating the brilliant work that Julia is doing.” So are there any redeeming features about Samantha? “I’ve got so much sympathy for her because she’s really stuck,” says Keeley. “She loves her husband and it is something still worth saving. It’s not a total loss, she’s just being railroaded at every turn by these very strong characters.” At the other end of the social scale is Krystal Weedon, who lives on the Fields estate with her drug addict mother and young brother. Played by Abigail Lawrie, Krystal is the beating heart of the story, according to scriptwriter Sarah Phelps, and lives an unendurable life. “There’s something much deeper to her than just that,” says Abigail. “She’s only 16 yet she has to do everything for her little brother and shows him love and care. “She’s caught up in all this mess with all of these adults and she’s still a child and quite vulnerable. It was that side of it that drew me to her I think. “I think the whole story is about helping each other, the collective responsibility and living in a community. “Treating others how you would want to be treated, that’s the message. There are a lot of people who have been through a hell of a lot. I definitely think there are millions of Krystals out there.” And how did she feel working alongside such illustrious names? “They’re very focused, I’ve never been on a professional set before. Keeley Forsyth, who plays my mum, was amazing and I found that incredible how much she committed to her character.” It sounds like viewers are in for a bitter-sweet treat when the series premiers in a week’s time, with both laughs and tears as they find out the darker side behind a facade of quintessential English village life. The Casual Vacancy starts on BBC1 on February 15.

misunderstanding A risqué fake shop sent temperatures soaring in Painswick – but for the real thing, it has had the desired effect in the run-up to Valentine’s Day. BEN FALCONER found out more

HILE fake shop ‘Samanatha’s Boudoir’ was part of a set for the TV adaptation of JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, KnickerBockers in Nailsworth is very much in business – although not selling all the product lines that actress Keeley Hawes’ mock shop had in the window. The Fountain Street store in Nailsworth has enjoyed a boost in customers after it hit national headlines – director Johnny Campbell said when ‘Samantha’s Boudoir’ was mistaken for the real thing it sparked complaints, and national newspaper headlines. Verity Symcox, owner of KnickerBockers, said people have mistaken her shop for the fake one and that “it has helped remind the region that we need to update our underwear”. “We have had men and women looking in, probably looking for the series star Keeley Hawes,” she said. “We have quite a racy window display at the moment due to Valentine’s Day and I think this is adding to the confusion. “We are obviously not in Painswick but Nailsworth has a host of independent shops. “The risqué window display includes items from well-known underwear company Andres Sarda who are known for pushing boundaries. But unlike Samantha’s Boudoir we do not sell rubber and leather items. We are a lingerie shop with a focus on fitting and quality. “The fake shop has been great for business and is really helping with Valentine’s sales.” Unlike ‘Samanatha’s Boudoir’, KnickerBockers offers top quality products, fitting and a gift wrapping service. The Painswick ‘shop’ was fitted out for Keeley Hawes’ character

Samantha Mollison in the tale of small town politics, suicide, abuse and addiction during the summer. One outraged villager complained to the parish council – while others tried to snap up a bargain there. At a preview of the series Mr Campbell said: ‘They did mistake it for the real thing and complained about it at the local parish council meeting. They said it was a disgrace. “But there were a couple of occasions when we were filming and an old lady, white hair and a stick, was walking past looking in the window. We said, “Please excuse . . .”, but she said, “Oh no, I’ve got all that stuff”. “Someone came in and thought there was a sale on so we found people looking round at some of the stuff. It was amusing.” Irina Litton, deputy clerk of Painswick Parish Council, said a villager complained about the lingerie shop but saw the funny side when its true purpose was revealed. gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

Gloucestershire stylist and personal shopper KATE PARKER tells us how to say I love you with effortless chic
D
RESSING for Valentines should be a seductive rather than full-on sexy affair. The art of attraction is as much about illusion as it is the big reveal. The French, the world authority on all things seductive, manage to perfectly combine a laid-back attitude with style. By definition it’s the effortlessness of their look that amps up their sex factor. Tactile fabrications and a laissez-faire elegance are the hallmark looks of fabulous Frenchwomen like actress Charlotte Rampling, Clémence Poésy and French Vogue editor-in-chief, Emanuel Alt. Follow their lead and look across the Channel for some enticing inspiration. French brand Kooples, famed for its advertising campaigns of super-cool couples in love, is a case in point. Although no longer present on Cheltenham’s Promenade, the range remains available online at thekooples.co.uk. Pictured here is their fabulous fringed velvet devoré kimono (£265). It would look beautiful over a simple black mini dress or skinny black jeans and high black ankle boots for a more casual pairing. Another simple, yet sexy, Valentine’s solution is this black embroidered kimono (£125) which looks pulled together and elegant but has a lovely softness to it. This silk camisole from M&S (£39.50) would sit perfectly underneath. @WeekendGlos
These red suede heels from Ted Baker (£130) shout Valentines. The mesh detail and gold heel tip make them more like lingerie for your feet. If red shoes feel a bit too racy, they are also available in black, as are these sling backs from Sam Edelman with crystal detailing (£130), a glamorous option from Harvey Nichols. A slick of Red Vixen Lip Lustre from celebrity’s favourite make-up artist, Charlotte Tilbury (£16.50) at charlottetilbury.com and you’re good to go. Her website is a great resource for different make-up looks. This long-lasting lip lacquer is from her Bombshell collection pictured here and inspired by Hollywood stars of the silver screen Veronica Lake and Marilyn Monroe. Say it with flowers in this sophisticated and feminine dress from Zara (£59.99) with its contemporary floral print. Add the simple red watch from Olivia Burton (£69) to make sure you’re not late for your date. Follow these five tips for style attraction: Showcase just one of your best assets. Men can be frightened by extreme fashion – avoid pieces that are overtly trendy. Look polished – great grooming is essential. Keep it real – don’t overdo the fake tan. Layer fragrance with body lotion and a spritz of perfume. Don’t be too heavy-handed, you want to seduce, not overwhelm him. kateparkerstyle.com

More a huge dinner party for everyone you know and love, than a fanfare of fuss and formality, create a personal and intimate atmosphere by sitting together on long rustic tables, passing shared plates and lighting it all perfectly with homely, twinkling lights. Informal and unconventional weddings will be big. You heard it here first.
GO GREEN
The royal wedding inspired us to bring the outdoors in and we have it on good authority that the trend for green has definitely stuck. Herbs such as rosemary and mint strung together with ivy, magnolia leaf and fern are adorning tablerunners, framing cocktail menus, redefining tent ceilings and softening chandeliers. Topiary and architectural trees bring form and height into tents and venues as well as adding life into the spaces. The key here is to adorn with foliage and hint at the great outdoors, rather than sending your guests into the jungle to forage for their supper (although that could be a lot of fun too).

OSES are red, lonely hearts are blue, it’s Valentine’s Day soon, but what will you do? Traditionally couples will jet off for a romantic break to Paris or Venice or, if they’re in the middle of a longterm marriage, they may be content with a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates. Singletons however, may find themselves feeling a little jaded at this time of year, forever wondering if they’ll land their dream date. But meeting that special someone could be easier than you think with more ways than ever to try and find true love. Online dating appears to offer a simple solution for a lonely soul. Providing a personalised love match based on your likes, hobbies and interests, sexual orientation and even religion, it seems like the perfect service at the touch of a button. Dating guru Anna Freeman runs an introduction agency and single’s dating service, Anne’s Parties, located in the heart of the Cotswolds. Anna offers tips on everything from dating etiquette to how to beat those nerves from the comfort of her own home in Cheltenham. She arranges for singles to meet each other through a variety of dating events, regularly organising speed dating evenings in the area. Anna thinks Cheltenham is the perfect place to socialise and get to know people. “It’s a beautiful town with a great selection of bars and venues,” she says. “I host singles events at my house to offer a comfortable introduction in a relaxing atmosphere and speed dating is a lot of fun.” Anna regularly finds that people are
Does Valentine’s Day mean a box of truffles and a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey? Get the most out of your dating experience with Anna’s top tips: Appearance: Men should wear an open shirt with a suit or a pair of smart jeans. Clean shoes are a must and no muddy trainers. Remember to have clean and trimmed fingernails, keep neat and tidy and avoid gold jewellery. Class act: Show a little cleavage but don’t overdo it, you don’t want to give the wrong impression. @WeekendGlos
nervous about face-to-face dating, but is encouraging in her approach. “It’s so common for dating sites to be full of members who are either players or aren’t willing to actually go on a date,” she says. “It’s so important to make the effort to get out there and get on with it and say yes to as much as possible. “It’s about going out and having some fun and practising the ability to flirt. Meeting up doesn’t mean a relationship.” Happily single due to her independent nature and busy lifestyle, single mother Anna is open to love with the right person, but is not in a hurry. “It’s better to be single and happy than in a relationship and miserable,” she says. “None of it really matters unless you’re living a purposeful life that you enjoy.” Her first speed dating event of 2015 takes place next Saturday – Valentine’s Day – at the Exmouth Arms in Cheltenham and Anna has plans to expand her operation to Cirencester later this year. “We’ll have nibbles and fizz in a sociable party environment,” she says. “You don’t have to bring a friend as you’ll hopefully make lots more.” Most importantly, Anna recommends enjoying the atmosphere of the evening. “Don’t worry or feel selfconscious,” she said. “Be open and don’t be secretive, make the effort and if nothing else you will make new friends.” Tickets for Anna’s speed dating
event at the Exmouth Arms in Bath Road, Cheltenham, cost £25. It starts at 8pm. Call 08444 141448 or 07773 000733.

Less is more: Women should wear natural makeup, looking preened and well-kept but not overdone. Resist the urge to try a new haircut or look, you want to feel like ‘you’. On the date: Ask open questions to banish nerves, but don’t be afraid to butt in if someone is only talking about themselves; they may just be nervous too. Be open to love: Don’t be too particular about the person you want to meet; you’re limiting yourself from meeting a lovely match if you go only by appearances.

HELEN BLOW catches up with the lovely ladies at LoveBites as they talk edible spoons, balsamic pearls and cheddar foam
dazzling CANAPÉS
I
F your idea of canapés is a few sad-looking vol-au-vents, mini pizzas and sausages on sticks, you obviously haven’t been to an event catered for by canapé queens Kelly Bailey and Rachel Thursfield. A spoonful of roast lamb and rosemary jus, a soupçon of chocolate torte and a pipette of salted caramel sauce could be just the morsels needed to make your event the talking point of the year. Each canapé created by LoveBites is a mini culinary masterpiece, lovingly handcrafted to aesthetic and mouthwatering perfection by foodie fan Kelly. Although they only launched in September, LoveBites has already catered for several high profile events in Gloucestershire and beyond, as well as private parties, and they are earning a name for themselves as the company to book for something completely different. “We chose our name because we want everybody to love every bite of our canapés,” said Kelly, who is in charge of thinking up and creating all the food. “We went to a New Year’s Eve party where everybody had to take something to eat and I was chosen to make the canapés. "From that event I got three bookings, although I wasn’t actually doing them as a business then. “After that I thought I might as well start so I joined up with Rachel, who is the business brains behind the company, and we launched LoveBites.” It is Kelly’s job to design the canapés, which she does for every event she holds, chatting with clients beforehand to see the kind of food they like and then going away and thinking up her amazing creations. To whet your appetite, some of the ideas she has served up include chive and sea salt shortbread with Cheddar foam, custard explosion and raspberry crush, pea shooter and parmesan crisp, and goats’ cheese spheres with balsamic pearls. “I get new ideas all the time,” she said. “I found some bright green wasabi caviar at a market in London, so when I got it home I made these little edible spoons with bright red beetroot crème fraiche and the wasabi and @WeekendGlos
the contrasting bright colours looked amazing. “Another canapé I do is Cotswold lamb with rosemary jus and mint jelly – it’s a bit like a mini Sunday lunch served up on a spoon. Another time at a casino party I did mini lemon tarts with edible gaming chips and coins. “I don’t believe in serving up mini pizzas or quiches or things on a piece of toast; that isn’t my style. I want to serve amazing-tasting food that also looks stunning so it creates a talking point. “Not only do our canapés taste fantastic but they are also just the thing to get your guests talking; they’re perfect for a networking event when you have to break the ice with a lot of people who may not know each other.” Kelly also serves up some of her canapés like courses, so you can have an entire cordon bleu meal in tiny, bitesized portions, from the amuse bouche through the fish course, main dish, cheese and dessert all in canapé form. “It’s a great, contemporary way to do food at an event, you’re making a statement and it’s cheaper than having to serve up a whole meal and feed a whole crowd of people. We think they’ve really got the wow factor. “Since launching we’ve catered for weddings, townhouse private parties and big companies, such as the launch of a new Mercedes and a party for Savills. Kelly also pairs up some of the canapés with a shot of alcohol, such as flavoured vodka or other spirits, often storing them in the freezer beforehand so they are served ice cold. Having previously worked in the catering world, including running her own acclaimed restaurant, Kelly has a passion and flair for creating something exciting and new. “We’ve been amazed by how much interest there has been, it’s been a real whirlwind start for us,” she said. “We’re both really passionate about it and I think it’s got real potential as a business as people want to step away from the norm and do something different.” To find out more visit lovebites.co.uk or ring 07979 690163 or 07774 725187.

OR a second I thought I was about to order a tropical disease. I called the waitress over. “Excuse me doctor, ahem, waitress,” I said. “But what are the symptoms, ahem, ingredients of the disease, ahem, dish, they call elote?” She looked at me blankly with a slightly panicked look in her eyes as though I’d asked for a bowl of ebola. It turned out, she had only just started working at The Tavern and hadn’t fully ‘got to grips’ with the menu. The elote was just as much a mystery to her as it was to me. “I’ll have that to start in that case,” I said as though trying to pretend I was some kind of gallivinating gourmet diner but all the while frantically searching for it on Google. The main ingredient of elote (£4) – should you still care – is the lesser known killer sweetcorn. Who knew? It was in dip form; mixed with sour cream and pepped up with a hefty spike of chilli and cayenne pepper. Creamy and moreish, it was devoured in no time with warm shards of flatbread. Then came the chickpeas chips (£4); gloriously crisp on the outside and pillowy soft and light in the middle. Served in one of those bang-on trend silver buckets – bowls are so 2014 – they came with a little pot of punchy tomato sauce. Delicious. So good in fact that the only criticism I could possibly level is that there wasn’t enough of them. I blame The Tavern wholeheartedly for this; if you’re going to serve food as good and interesting as this then they should ruddy well
cater for my greed. As a footnote – the majority of people would be more than satisfied. Mains continue the trendy theme; salt and pepper squid with Asian slaw, blackened salmon, sticky chicken wings and good old mac and cheese. There are a whole host of specials too alongside prime cuts of meat such as a £72 chateubrian. We didn’t fancy half a cow so we both ordered burgers (£10 each) since they are firmly in the bracket Chris Herrick, head chef atTheTavern
of ‘hipster food’ with restaurants – or should I say ‘joints’ – popping up everywhere with a never-ending loop of Bon Iver. They’re an American indiefolk band – but of course you knew that already. What ever happened to the days of chicken and chips in a basket and a bit of Simply Red? Still, the burgers were pretty epic – proper bovine smack round the chops – and served with a huge pile of shoestring fries with crispy rosemary and garlic. At this point, despite our tiny table – we turned up mid-week and the place was heaving but they
did their best to accommodate – it was so far so very, very good. The décor is industrial chic; distressed wooden tables, low lighting, the whole shebang and, more importantly, the Cotswoldbrewed Bobby Beer is excellent. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed and it’s stylish indeed – just as you might expect from Sam and Georgie Pearman who also run the impossibly cool No 131 The Prom which is just a stone’s throw away. Then the dessert arrived. I had high hopes; cara-maca cheesecake (£6) had all the makings of an indulgent NHS-approved delight for my shameless sweet tooth. Then I had a spoonful and realised something was quite wrong indeed. The filling was perfectly fine, if unremarkable, but the texture of the base was bizarre; like crunching through sandstone rubble. In hindsight I should have chosen the roasted peaches with mascarpone but after the elote thing I was feeling particularly liberal. Still, I survived to tell the tale and will be back to The Tavern very soon indeed. All things considered, I'd say that's a pretty good prognosis. Location: TheTavern, 5 Royal Well Place, Cheltenham Food: Modern American – lots of meaty dishes Atmosphere: Informal, relaxed Price: Can soon rack up if you order three courses. Service: Efficient and well-informed – if you don’t order the elote. Contact: 01242 221212
COCKTAIL MASTERCLASS at Lily Gins
T
HE air at Lily Gins is heavy with a marriage of zesty lime and spicy notes found only in the finest wines; the lingering scent of drinks ordered in flirtatious conversation. Now almost a year since opening, Lily Gins is seeing steady success. It's regarded as the place to be, regardless of the notorious lull in socialising that the colder months bring. Bar manager Lucas Roy-Smith took on the role with a vision to create a venue like no other in Cheltenham. His purist views on quality cocktail ingredients
and desire to create a landmark drinking destination have paid off. “I like to offer something different to our customers,” he says. “I want them to try something new. If you ask for a mojito, I’ll probably serve you something similar that you’ve never tried.” Running cocktail masterclasses and private parties, the venue also caters for office workers desiring to drink together in style and opens early on request. Try your hand at creating these classic cocktails in the comfort of your own home:
Virgin Mojito
12 mint leaves, 5 lime wedges, 50 ml apple juice, 20 ml sugar syrup. Mix mint leaves and lime wedges, lightly bruise mint in the base of a glass. Add apple juice instead of rum, then sugar syrup. Half fill glass with crushed ice and churn, top with soda if preferred.

Bramble
40ml gin, 20ml lemon juice, 20ml sugar syrup, 15ml Chambord Build into a glass with cubed ice, pour ingredients then add crushed ice. Pour Chambord (black cherry flavour) over to decorate and garnish with blackberries if preferred.
Vesper Martini
45ml Premium Gin, 20ml Premium Vodka, 15ml French aperitif (Kina Lillet fortified wine). Add the premium gin, vodka and Kina Lillet to cubed ice in a shaker. Shake gently so the ice doesn’t dilute. Strain into a martini glass. Add a large, thin slice of lemon peel to finish.

HERE’S something about peeping through a hole in the hedge or over the wall and taking a sneaky peek at someone else’s back yard. And it’s this curiosity and the thrill of finding out what lies beyond that toria inspired author Victoria Summerley to come up with a beautiful coffee table book revealing the charm and romance of secret gardens in thee Cotswolds. These aren’t the well known gardenss on the tourist trail, although there are some that open blic. regularly to the public. Many are private paradises – magnificent kingdoms hidden behind honey coloured walls and stylish gates. Through her book, Secret Gardens of the Cotswolds, we can gaze in awe at these spectacular and immaculately maintained back gardens, photographed in all their glory by Hugo RittsonThomas. Victoria, an award-winning gardening journalist who lives in Bibury, picked 20 gems, retracing the footsteps of luminary designers like Rosemary Verey. The most exotic is Sezincote with its Moghul dome, Indian temple, bridge and sculptures, from elephants and bulls to a rather scary serpent. It was built for Charles Cockerill, whose family made a fortune in India. Daylesford House also has exotic roots, built for the first governor-general of India and its walled gardens once grew mango and papayas. Now the home of JCB heir Lord Bamford and his wife Carole, it’s famous for its organic produce, farm shop and cafe. The gardens include a 21st century secret garden with octagonal swimming pool, The garden at Sezincote Estate
shell grotto and pizza oven. When it comes to snowdrops, Colesbourne Park, home of Sir Henry Elwes and his wife Carolyn, is the only place to be, while for topiary, the yew hedges clipped into the shape of huge birds at Rockliffe, near Stow-on-theWol Wold, take some beating. For grandeur, where else y’s but Lord and Lady Vesty’s family seat of Stowell Park. fam Every garden has a quirky E sto story, whether it’s the old cricket club benchess re rescued from Lord’s at Ea Eastleach House, near Cirencester, or the thought C th that John Milton was inspired to write Paradise in L Lost during a visit to Eyford House in Upper Slaughter, gazing out across our very own Gloucestershire garden of Eden. A ROSE ISN’T JUST FOR VALENTINE’S DAY HANNAH STEPHENSON offers some tips for beginners on how to look after your roses Indeed, roses may not be in bloom naturally in February, but they will provide you with plenty of colour and scent in the summer months if you give them a littleTLC and plant them where they’re happy. There are so many types of roses but if you want to plant them among other specimens in beds and borders, then English Roses by David Austin are probably your best bet, they are repeatflowering, reliable and often disease resistant. Many are good for cutting although personally I can’t bear to cut my own roses. I would much rather they flourish in the garden, outside for all to see. Good roses are difficult to breed. The challenge is to get a good combination of both fragrance and health and dark red roses in particular are subject to burning in the sun. But if you have your heart set on one, look out for ‘Darcey Bussell’, a compact, bushy variety which flowers all summer. It’s ideal for a smaller garden, a narrow border or even a large pot. All roses need four or five hours of sunshine a day during the growing season to thrive. Avoid areas where there are overhanging branches and dry places where there would be too much competition from the roots of other trees and shrubs. Avoid using invasive perennials or shrubs which might overpower the roses. Instead, go for light, airy perennials such as lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis), whose soft rounded leaves and lime-green flowers make a colourful base to your rose bushes and don’t take away the glory of the rose flowers. If you need to fill space, good annuals which will combine well with roses include love-in-a-mist such as Nigella ‘Miss Jekyll’ or the Cosmos bipinnatus, with its large single flowers in white, pink and purple.
A young mum’s desire to find inspiring wallpaper for her children’s bedrooms has led her to start a new business. SUE BRADLEY discovers how Juliet Chadwick has put her artistic talents to a new use
PAPER patterns G
AZING at wallpaper created by Juliet Chadwick is like entering another world; a place that’s both familiar and slightly fantastical. Every glance yields a new discovery, whether it’s the tightly coiled ammonites, clinging tentacles or waving sea anemones in her ‘Coral’ design, or tiny ladybirds crouching in leaves and flies stuck in a spiders’ webs in ‘Sunflowers’. Creating these hand-drawn wallpapers has literally been a labour of love for Juliet, who studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and now lives with her husband, Dan, daughter Eva (eight) and six-year-old son Caspar at historic Lypiatt Park near Stroud. Her designs reflect her children’s passions and were originally intended
for the walls of their bedrooms, but inspired such a positive reaction from people who saw them develop that Juliet had extra rolls printed in a variety of colour ways so that they could be made available to a wider audience. Juliet embarked on creating her own wallpapers after failing to find anything she considered sufficiently ‘exciting, inspiring and imaginative’ for her children. “I had a memory of the wallpaper in my mother’s room,” she explains. “It was patterned and I could see all sorts of things in it and make out faces in the patterns. “I spent a lot of time searching for something that would have the same kind of effect on my children but I couldn’t find anything that fitted that requirement.
36
“Caspar is interested in shipwrecks and life under the sea, and I wanted to reflect this in his wallpaper. I wanted it to be based on genuine ocean creatures but to be slightly fantastical too, and for all the elements to seem to be in conversation. “Caspar genuinely loves it and we often lie on his bed and talk about what he sees. “Eva loves climbing trees and looking at bugs, so her design is based on insects and flowers; it’s an English country garden but again, slightly fantastical. It’s not just a pattern but a little world.” While Juliet was already an accomplished artist, creating wallpaper was an entirely new skill to learn. “I had to work out how to make a repeat pattern, which I did by looking at different internet sites and watching You Tube,” she explains. “At first it seemed easy but once I started involving my drawings I realised it was very difficult to balance a composition and make it repeatable. “I could have used a computer but I gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend
felt this would take away some of the depth and interest from it. “I kept working on it and realised I really enjoyed what I was doing.” After many months of working on her designs, latterly in a converted hay loft close to her home, Juliet set about looking for a company to print them. Her search took her to Loughborough, where the long-established company Anstey helped her to turn her vision into reality. They encouraged her to use the gravure printing process to produce her ‘Coral’ wallpaper, which involved cutting her design into copper. Meanwhile ‘Sunflowers’ is ‘surface printed’, a technique derived from woodblocking, which gives the ink a certain degree of movement and texture and creates a style that evokes the wallpapers of yesteryear. “They held my hand while I developed my drawings to the point they could be reproduced and helped me with colours and techniques,” says Juliet. “Initially I was going to do a small run for the children but there was such a positive reaction from people who had watched the wallpaper develop that I realised it would be worth doing a larger one.” While some might consider Juliet’s decision to design wallpaper for her children’s bedrooms to be going to an awful lot of trouble, her actions are not so extraordinary within the context of the Chadwick family’s artistic heritage. Their home, a manor house with Medieval origins set in a peaceful valley, previously belonged to the celebrated modernist sculptor Lynn Chadwick, Dan’s father, who died in 2003. He had bought the property in 1958 when it was unwanted and in a dilapidated state and went on to carefully renovate and restore it while creating his sculptures, some of which are displayed in the grounds surrounding the house. Dan has continued the family’s artistic tradition by creating mobiles, one of @WeekendGlos
which was displayed during the recent Crucible 2 exhibition at Gloucester Cathedral. He also makes backgammon sets and has invented a stovetop pizza oven – called The Chadwick Oven – of which thousands have already been sold all over the world. Since making Lypiatt Park their home, Dan and Juliet have continued Lynn’s work in renovating and restoring the property. “It’s a very inspiring place; it’s a great place to think, with lots of open spaces but the feeling of being tucked in,” says Juliet, who was married in 2007. “The landscape here was part of Lynn’s work and he had a lot of peace here. “Lynn’s work and the spaces he created are all around us and we are mindful of the need to respect and preserve this while making a home for our family. “I always think that the house is a bit like a naughty teenager: it’s good fun and brilliant for throwing parties – we can fit bouncy castles into the ballroom – but it needs a constant eye on it.” Wallpaper has been an enjoyable addition to Juliet’s portfolio, although she says she plans to continue drawing and painting while building her new business. She’s already turned some of the images from ‘Coral’ and ‘Sunflowers’ into prints and cards and is working with ceramics specialist Richard Brendon to use them on a tea set. “I have always loved drawing and painting,” says Juliet, whose talents earned her an arts scholarship at Downe House School in Berkshire when she was 14. “Developing the wallpaper has been a long process but throughout it all I’ve been inspired by watching Dan develop his Chadwick Oven business. “For me it’s wonderful to be able to do two things side by side and to be able to produce something so that it’s accessible to a lot of people.” julietchadwick.com. Juliet’s wallpaper can be purchased from her website or though Bailey Paints in London Road, Stroud. baileypaints.co.uk.

MOVING can be stressful and moving to retirement property is no different. Most companies in this sector have schemes to help you and for most people, everything will go well. Many times people have said to me ‘I wish I had made the move years earlier, I’m so much more comfortable now’. If you are starting to think about a move, where do you turn to for advice and how can you be sure that help will be on hand if there are problems? Of course, you will get information from company brochures, websites and, when you visit properties, but what about independent advice? The Elderly Accommodation Counsel is a national charity that offers independent advice and has two services. The First Stop Service gives free telephone advice (call 0800 377 7070) to older people, their families and carers about housing and care options for later life. ANARTIST in bloom
Having not picked up a paintbrush since her school days, self-taught artist Helen Campbell has already established a name for herself with her stunning watercolours. HELEN BLOW talks to her about her subjects and national recognition
A
HOBBY and passion has turned into a career for botanical artist Helen Campbell, whose stunning watercolours bring flowers and plants to life on canvas. Despite not having picked up a paintbrush since her school days, Helen’s illustrations are used in magazines and greetings cards and her paintings have already won her a top national award. Entirely self-taught, she also runs workshops teaching other people to paint from her studio in the Cotswolds. Her paintings are incredibly detailed and true to life, and so accurate they appear at first glance to be photographs. “I began painting as a hobby back in 2009 but I always wanted to do it professionally,” said Helen, who lives and works in Winchcombe. “Three years later I thought it was now or never so I quit my job as a paralegal and took the plunge. “I’m not really sure what triggered it off but, despite been arty at school and getting my A Level art, after such a long gap I had to more or less start from scratch. “I started painting in a few different mediums and different things to see where I wanted to go but I have always been drawn to watercolours. “For a while it was frustrating because I didn’t know how to make it work for me but I’ve always been interested in flowers and plants. “Botanical illustration has been around for centuries and was once the only method of recording various species of plants. “I prefer a less scientific approach and I bring a modern feel to my paintings, but they are inspired by those old botanical illustrations. “I set out to capture in watercolour @WeekendGlos
the wonderful array of plants that grow here and the surrounding three counties.” Helen has also worked hard on her photography, as she paints from pictures rather than real life. “As an artist, I need to be flexible and therefore I paint the plant as I see it. It is vital that the colours are as close to my subject as possible. “Because light changes all the time, for me working from life would make my job impossible. Therefore I work entirely from photographs as this allows me to take time with my compositions.” Helen also writes regular features and step-by-step guides to painting for a national art magazine, and exhibited her paintings at last year’s Three Counties Show. “Last year I was also awarded a SilverGilt medal by The Royal Horticultural Society at the Malvern Spring Show,” she said. “I entered a series of six paintings on the theme of flowers fading.” Helen teaches all abilities in her workshops, from experienced painters to complete beginners. “I believe anyone can learn to paint, even if you think you can’t. My method is almost foolproof. “I get people from all walks of life and ages, but a lot of them have reached 40 plus and have more time on their hands so fancy taking up something that perhaps they have always wanted to do or used to do in the past.” Find out more about Helen’s work or the workshops by visiting helencampbellart.co.uk From top to bottom: Purple anemone, Dahlia, Cotswold Apples and Chrysanthemum, all by artist Helen Campbell

classic Tucked away in London’s East End, the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel is an Aladdin’s cave of period features, street art and top-of-the-range technology. JONATHAN WHILEY checks in
T
HERE was a time – oh at least five years ago – when checking into a hotel was a formal, official, tight-lipped kind of affair. Inevitably you would make small talk about the weather while reluctantly handing over excessive amounts of personal information to the concierge including an update on your neighbour’s vicious-looking cat. But times have changed and in 2015, the idea of a check-in desk is very much
BOUTIQUE
old hat. Or at least it is at the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel in London where suited and booted staff who look like they’ve just stepped out of an Nepresso ad are ready and waiting, armed with iPads. We arrived just after lunchtime at the five-star boutique which is housed in a grand Victorian building a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Liverpool Street station. As first impressions go, the lobby is quite stunning. Its grandeur – ceilings that could house the BFG, eclectic art installations and pillowy soft mood lighting – mean the whole affair is effortlessly cool. In short, it’s like being on the hotel set of a Bond film; minus the secret agents and scantilyclad women. More’s the pity. “Would you care for a glass of wine sir?,” one particularly suave member of staff

enquired and for a split-second I was tempted to ask for it shaken rather than stirred. Instead I turned it down on the grounds that it was barely 1pm and the idea of necking it in the time it would take to check-in could make me feel a little light-headed. Before long we were escorted to the lift and shown to our room before the inevitable “guide to facilities” commenced which usually involves a staff member pointing out where the hairdryer is and reassuring guests the custard creams are complimentary. On this occasion, however, our room was a little out of the ordinary with a huge, and quite magnificent piece of wall art, dominating the space. London-based illustrator Chris Price has weaved his magic to produce it, paying homage to the famous Pearly Kings and Queens of the East End and their 19th century gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend
Tuscany
costume.Fittingly the room has been named ‘Pearly Room’ and it’s one of four rooms in the hotel which feature pieces of work by a diverse selection of street artists, celebrating East London’s past, present and future. Although we could have gazed at its intricacies for hours, we decided to explore the hotel’s facilities instead. It’s huge. A labyrinth of corridors and grand staircases connect each ‘wing’ and you often stumble on pockets of space that have been set aside for those who want to read, simply relax with a drink or quietly build their Nespresso empire. Elsewhere, there’s an original Masonic Temple which occasionally hosts events as well as several private dining areas. Guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to making plans for dinner; the breathtaking 1901 restaurant and wine bar (housed in a Grade II-listed former ballroom) is your pick for fine dining and afternoon tea or else tuck into Japanese cuisine at trendy Mikayo. We didn’t find time to make it to either sadly after being seduced by the cool blue lighting and trendy cocktails at the hotel’s Catch Champagne Bar and Lounge. We did leave eventually; soaking up a bit of culture at the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth, browsing the boutique shops on our doorstep and stopping off for a slice of Italy at Pizza East in the hipster resort commonly known as Shoreditch. The next morning – feeling a little delicate after cocktails – we made the five-minute journey through the hotel’s corridors to the Eastway Brasserie to sample its new brunch menu. It’s a cracker too. We ate like king’s; fruit smoothies served in small glass bottles to start with, followed by spicy Merguez sausages with pepper and onion caponata and THE best French toast with maple syrup I have ever tasted. Other dishes include Eggs on Brick Lane – soft poached eggs with mild curried potatoes on a Dosa pancake – and there’s even a Bloody Mary station where you can concoct your own cocktail. Instead, we ordered a couple of espressos – at the Andaz Liverpool Street it seems like the right thing to do.

THE WEEKEND
library Mobile Library by David Whitehouse
Picador, priced £14.99 David Whitehouse’s second novel starts at the end. Nearly-teenager Bobby Nusku and single mother Val and her daugher Rosa are surrounded by police on a cliff edge in a stolen mobile library. Misfit Bobby has run away from his dad and his girlfriend and is struggling to come to terms with his mother’s absence. Val provides a comforting mother figure, who he has strong feelings for. The trio meet traveller, Joe, who has
a wild temper, but also completes their makeshift family. Whitehouse eloquently evokes Bobby’s adolescent angst, with all the jealousy and rage it entails, but his obvious fascination with stories is laboured. And the book’s more violent scenes sit uncomfortably against the love-fest between the four main characters. Still, a tale that will haunt right up until it’s clever conclusion.

Vinnie drives Ellen to her physio appointment every week. He is preoccupied pondering how he will manage this week’s school lunches, teenage tantrums, and pocket money. This is his sole responsibility now, since his wife walked out of their home and away from their family. Ellen is too far into the heartbreak and devastation of her past to notice what is going on around her. One taxi journey changes this forever. Ciara Geraghty gently draws sorrow, happiness, and and fear out of her reader. The journey she creates of Ellen and Vinnie’s relationship is intricate and cautious, yet engaging. A novel about parenthood, families, love and loss, Now That I’ve Found You is an enjoyable and moving read.
The place in the title is Winterfold - where Martha and David have brought their family up. Chapters are narrated by different characters so you get different perspectives on the same incidents and relationships. The narrative also goes backwards and forwards in time so you can see the impact that decisions have rippling forwards. While the covers of Evans’ novels gets the chick lit treatment, some of the issues she deals with are far from frothy - domestic violence or abuse, adoption, bereavement, alongside some of the romantic staples of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back again. The hopes and worries of older, more mature women even get a look in.
Journalist Tessa Dunlop presents the stories of 12 women who worked at the United Kingdom’s Government Code and Cypher School during the Second World War. As Dunlop interlaces their backgrounds and reactions to Park life, you discover this is not simply a biography of one shared experience, but of a generation. Having signed the Official Secrets Act, many of the stories these women have to share have gone unheard for decades – not even their families were to know of the work they conducted during that time. It is at times hard to distinguish each woman’s voice; however the collective conscience of the Bletchley Girls is unquestionably compelling.
The daughter of a Maharajah, Sophia Duleep Singh’s family were exiled from India to Elveden in Suffolk where her father improbably recreated the family estate complete with leopards, monkeys and exotic birds. Sophia, who also just happened to be Queen Victoria’s goddaughter, grew up to be a socialite and fashion muse. Defying a strict edict, she returned to India and fought for women’s suffrage. From tending wounded soldiers to taking on the might of politicians, Sophia proved herself to be unusually resourceful and daring. This is an unforgettable, vivid tale, sweeping in scale, made all the more extraordinary when one considers it is based entirely on real life.

THE INTERVIEW (15) Out now, Cineworld, Cheltenham and Gloucester Quays,Times and prices vary
The poster boy of folk returns to Cheltenham this month for the Folk Three festival. CORRIE BOND-FRENCH catches up with Seth Lakeman to talk about his upcoming tour
H
E unassumingly recorded his 2005 solo album in the kitchen for a mere £300, so Seth Lakeman was nothing if not stunned when the album, Kitty Jay, was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. Now, several albums and tours later, Seth is returning to Cheltenham this month to headline at Folk Three, the reincarnated Cheltenham Folk Festival. With his catchy, melodic songs and rugged good looks, singer and fiddler Seth has long been heralded the poster boy of a folk revival, and his profile has helped banish the outdated misconceptions of the folk scene to the past. Gone now is the folk caricature image of Del Boy’s Uncle Albert doppelgangers wearing woolly hats and jumpers, even woolier beards, and singing mournfully into a pint. The times they are a changin’. These days, there is room for manoeuvre and Seth and his fellow folk luminaries such as KT Tunstall, Kate Rusby and his sisterin-law Cara Dillon have record deals and awards aplenty. The new generation folksters are credited with helping the genre evolve to appeal to a new, wider generation of folk fans, and the numbers keep rising. Seth’s appeal has been broadened further by his touring with bands such as The Levellers (they insisted on a set-closing fiddle-off between Seth and
Jonathan Sevink), Billy Bragg and Jools Holland. But in spite of it all, Seth’s success has not taken him away from the grass roots folk scene he grew up in. Because Seth is nothing if not a folk thoroughbred, and he is firmly independent in his approach. As a youngster he played with his older brothers Sam and Sean as the Lakeman Brothers. “I made the decision to go solo over ten years ago now, and it does drive you forward,” said Seth. “2005 kick-started everything for my music when the Mercury prizes happened, and it evolved from there – it’s a good platform.” Growing up in Devon in such a musical family, Seth can barely remember when he couldn’t play the violin. “I’ve always played the same violin, its been in our family for over a hundred years – my Gran played it. “It is cherished and priceless, utterly priceless to me,” said Seth. “I haven’t ever given her a name, but a violin is always a lady, they are curvaceous and definitely feminine.” Seth is no stranger to Gloucestershire, having played at the Greenbelt Festival in previous years. He also played a sell-out concert in Gloucester Cathedral in 2013, an evening that left him with very special memories. “It’s an amazing place, we had a fantastic show there, the space seemed
50
to come alive. It was magical. “You have to adapt slightly to the space when you play, but I think it’s great that Cathedrals are opening their doors to new things,” said Seth. Now Seth is ready to hit the road again and his workload has had to adapt a little recently following the arrival of his twins, Morley and Lowen. “At the moment I’m writing a lot, there’s lots going on, I’m touring a live record at the end of the year as it’s my ten-year anniversary of touring. “My wife does say ‘when are you going to chill out Seth’, but I’m not at that time of life when you can contemplate doing that. “At the moment I just look forward to it – it’s a privilege to get to play live. “It’s a big busy run of live shows, now I’ve got the twins it’s a break in a gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend
Pin-up boy
way, but I’m looking forward to taking them in the camper van!” Are the twins showing any early musical promise? “I play to them all the time, they definitely love music.” So, does Seth still enjoy being part of folk’s community and heritage? “It really is a nice community,” he says. “Folk music is quite vulnerable in the music scene, so its important that people do support each other in the fringes. “Folk music is the people’s music and that is what lies at it’s heart. “We are passionate about what we do and I do think that that comes through and touches people, and that’s what we want.” Seth headlines Folk Three at Cheltenham Town Hall next Saturday. @WeekendGlos

music CHELTENHAM JAZZ FESTIVAL PIANO man Jamie Cullum will be returning to the Cheltenham Jazz Festival as guest director this year, headlining a star-studded event. The singer-songwriter will perform with trailblazing US jazz funk band Medeski, Martin & Wood at the six-day festival, which opens on April 29. Other headline acts include soul singer Laura Mvula, former Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson and queen of soul Martha Reeves. The bold programme features a range of exclusive one-off performances, unique collaborations, special commissions and debut UK appearances. There will be classic and contemporary jazz, blues, soul and pop from a string of pioneering acts including million-selling singer-songwriter Rumer, Dutch superstar Caro Emerald, experimental producer and composer Squarepusher and world-renowned DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Other high profile acts on the bill include venerable jazz-fusion star John Scofield, the mystical sounds of the Sun Ra Arkestra, master ngoni player Bassekou Kouyate and the UK premiere of jazz heavyweight Lee Konitz’s new quintet featuring virtuoso trumpeter Dave Douglas. Festival Director Ian George said: “Jazz legends, stars of tomorrow, groundbreaking
international acts and local emerging talent all once again populate a Cheltenham Jazz Festival programme that reflects the incredible breadth and diversity of the genre.” Fans of Afrobeat are in for a treat in the form of two contrasting but equally outstanding concerts – a Saturday afternoon show from legendary African drummer Tony Allen, who performs music from his acclaimed 2014 album Film of Life, followed that evening by Joe Lovano’s Village Rhythms Band, an inventive seven-piece outfit exploring the connection between West African music and jazz. BBC Radio 2 continues its long-term association with the festival and has confirmed a range of activity across the week. Alongside live festivalthemed shows recorded onsite by Jamie Cullum and jazz singer Clare Teal, the network will air Caro Emerald’s concert and a Frank Sinatra-themed Friday Night Is Music Night featuring appearances from Kurt Elling, Clare Teal and Anthony Strong. The festival ends on a high on May 4 with a world premiere of a celebration of the music of George and Ira Gershwin, featuring Laura Mvula and Gregory Porter. Performances will take place in the Big Top and Jazz Arena, as well as venues around the town. Tickets go on sale to members on February 25 and to the public on March 5. SELMA, CINEWORLD, CHELTENHAM AND GLOUCESTER QUAYS MORE than 45 years after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, director Ava DuVernay honours the memory of the leader of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement with this impassioned biopic. While there are lingering doubts about the historical accuracy of Selma, the emotional wallop the film delivers is beyond question. In particular, the recreation of the iconic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge chills the blood. Oxford-born actor David Oyelowo delivers a breakout performance replete with Georgia accent as the activist.
In 1960s America, political bureaucracy and prejudice deny the African-American electorate the chance to vote in the forthcoming election in which President Lyndon B Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) hopes to be returned to the White House by the people. Martin Luther King Jr (Oyelowo) entreats the President to right this democratic wrong but Johnson and his adviser Lee C White (Giovanni Ribisi) don’t consider voting rights to be high on their list of priorities. Selma is out now. Catch it at Cineworld in Cheltenham or Gloucester Quays.

career as well as songs taken from his new duets album Sirens Of Song, released last November. THE
final word COLUMNIST SALI GREEN
and are ready to emerge like tortoises from hibernation or butterflies from cocoons. We are going to be unstoppable this year! My friend Georgie from Wales rang this morning (well, Hetty’s friend but then mine too as Hetty is an excellent friend-sharer.) Georgie has written a book called Turn Lights On and puts on friendly evenings around England and Wales to bring this into our lives. Her concept is simple: ‘Turn Lights On is a movement, a practice and a lifestyle. Commit to being in the moments of your life and inspire others in the process.’ She is putting on an evening of this in Cheltenham in March. It’s free and you are all invited. Keep an eye on my events page for more information once it’s all confirmed. This could be your turning point if you have been waiting for something to shift in your life. See, I got my 400 words done in the end (editor Jonathan is chasing me up on email for it). From animal rights to holidays to motivational movements. Where else do you get that in a Saturday magazine? Catch you next week.
O
UT walking the dog I was looking for inspiration for this week’s waffle and I bumped into a lady I often see on our dog-walking route. Ironically you get to know the dogs’ names a long time before you discover the owners’ names but she will know who I am talking about as we discussed what to write in this column. We touched on the treatment of animals – how we call ourselves a nation of animal lovers and judge other places around the world as cruel and barbaric, and yet behind closed doors Britain is carrying out vivisection (animal testing for cosmetics, cleaning products, etc); battery farming; abuse in slaughterhouses (there is call from animal rights campaigners for CCTV), fur-farming, neglect, dogfighting – the list goes on. However we decided that is a heavy subject and that something more bright and breezy is needed for February. Holidays sprang to mind. The lady (owner of dogs Gal & Eric) is going on a cruise this year. It’s booked and she’s looking forward to it. Ah, the thought of holidays has the ability to whisk our minds away to places far and wide where we would feel relaxed, refreshed and soothed. I dream of The Bahamas, Morocco, Cyprus, Thailand, Bali, the South of France, Australia. Once it’s booked we know that treat is in store. Sand between our toes, or skis beneath our feet, and a break from the routine of work. Only a few more weeks of winter and spring will be on its way. We’ve almost done it; survived the chilliest season

If you could invite anyone for a dinner party, dead or alive, who would you invite?
Sir Michael Caine, the Pope, Phil Vickery (the rugby one) and Dame Helen Mirren.
What do you need to get through the weekend? Patience.
WEEKEND...
And finally, what’s the best weekend you have ever been on?
A visit to London – back to my roots, then into St Pauls, over to the Science Museum and then on to an Arsenal game at the Emirates; all with the family.
ROB REES Chef
Quick Fire Island retreat in the Caribbean or skiing in the Swiss Alps? Island retreat. Country weekend or city break? City break Spa treatment or gourmet tasting menu? Gourmet tasting.
How would you describe your ideal weekend?
One with no work – not even an email, tweet or message on Facebook – but it hardly ever happens. If it does then just time with my wife and children – totally no other company.
Book or Kindle? Neither Early bird or lie-in? Early bird Star Bistro, a joint venture between Rob’s charityThe Wiggly Worm and the National Star Foundation, has reached the final five of the People’s Best Restaurant, organised by the Sustainable Restaurant Association.
Who would you spend it with?
My wife Ren and children, Jack and Maddie
What would you watch on TV?
A good film, perhaps a live Arsenal football match and a drama like Silent Witness would work for us
What film would you watch?
With seven-year-olds and nine-year-olds we are dominated by Frozen!
If you could go anywhere for the weekend, where would you go? NewYork.
What would you read?
As many newspapers as possible.
What would you eat?
I love the flavours and fun that tapas can provide and the idea of such snacks on a regular basis.
What would you drink?
Im a big tea and coffee drinker.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate and caramel brownies (made by Debs, one of my team).
