OW we’ve lost any semblance of interest in the World Cup – die-hard sofa huggers and Suarez ‘bite’-watchers aside – all thoughts are turning to Wimbledon. But even if you’re not having heated debates about the merits of Murray vs Djokovic, or Nadal’s freaky arm, or Federer’s chances, there’s always Pimm’s and strawberries. Every cloud . . . Anyway, as gripping as the tennis is, we ought really to be out in the fresh air (ignoring this weekend’s rain). So, we join Welsh songstress and I’m a Celebrity survivor Cerys Matthews to walk the Laurie Lee Way. If you’ve never read any Lee, you should. His sentences are like songs: filled with light and shade, discovery and wonder, life and death. I’m never sure whether it’s the romanticism of the Slad Valley (much more romantic now than it was in his day, by the way) which makes me love him so, or the thought of a cold pint of scrumpy at the Woolpack. But wherever I am, there’s something about Lee’s writing that immediately
transports me to a Gloucestershire hay field in high summer. “The great beech filled at least half the sky and shook shadows all over the house,” he wrote in Cider With Rosie. “Its roots clutched the slope like a giant hand, holding the hill in place. Its trunk writhed with power, threw off veils of green dust, rose towering into the air, branched into a thousand shaded alleys, became a city for owls and squirrels.” See what I mean? Not all trees in literature were created equal. Elsewhere, the incomparable David Everitt-Matthias injects a bit of Michelin magic into your kitchen with a clutch of fancy summer recipes. We launch our fabulous Taste of Gloucestershire Awards, celebrating the very best in food and farming. And Suzanne Vega talks life and love on her new tour. Have a great weekend. This issue’s contributors were asked: What’s the best street food in the world?
Lucy Parford

Sue Bradley
Deputy Weekend editor Lucy tracked down Cotswold artist Andrew Joynes for this edition. She says: “The best street food for a vegetarian has to be falafel. No matter what festival or city we’re visiting for the weekend, you can guarantee there will be a falafel stand somewhere. I try to kid myself it’s not that bad for you, with lots of houmous and salad, but it probably still is.”
Victoria wrote this week’s travel feature. “I’d travel halfway round the world for masala dhosas, a breakfast delicacy with a serious spicy kick, served anywhere near a beach in Kerala. And I once had a cup of black pepper chai tea in India. “Niang’sThai Snacks, at Gloucester and Stroud’s Farmers’ Markets are fantastic. Niang’s green chicken curry and spring rolls are fabulous.“
“I’m a chilli freak, so Szechuan bang bang chicken. What’s not to like about that fragrant mix of peanuts, red chillies, ginger, lime and sesame seeds?” says Weekend editorTanya. “Or proper, wood-fired pizza. The best pizza I’ve ever eaten was from this little stall in a dodgy side street in Naples. “The chef looked as if he’d kill you as soon as look at you, but the pizza was unbelievable.”
“The best street food I’ve had? That’s hard,” says the owner of Le Champignon Sauvage. “Try @BritStreetFood and @richardjohnsonx onTwitter, and www. britishstreetfood.co.uk will give you ideas. “Recently I ate a spoton wood-fired pizza from quirky trailer The Tinderbox and I at an incredibly memorable salt beef and pickle on a black rye bun from the Bell and Brisket.”
“The best street food I’ve ever eaten was in Crete,” says food writer Sue. “It was a kebab made from spit-roasted lamb coated with yoghurt and stuffed into freshly-baked pitta. And barbecued squid with huge quarters of fresh lemon in Lanzarote. “Here, you can’t go wrong with an organically-reared beef burger from the Adey’s Farm stall at Stroud Farmers’ Market.”

Private Peaceful’s war
C
HELTENHAM festival-goers will get two chances to see award-winning author Michael Morpurgo in action over the next few months. Not only is he performing at the Music Festival next weekend, but he will be returning in October to talk about his hero Laurie Lee at the Literature Festival. Michael has written the introduction to the centenary edition of Lee’s most famous work, Cider with Rosie, published to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth. In it he mentions what a profound effect the book has had on his life and being mesmerised by the beautiful prose. Since then Michael has gone on to write beautiful prose of his own, not least in his moving book Private Peaceful, about a young man who moves from childhood in a Devon village to the trenches of the Western Front in the First World War. He will be joined at the music festival by a cappella trio Coope, Boyes & Simpson, performing a version of Private Peaceful for The Family Prom. “The first time I did the music festival
Laurie Lee is War Horse author Michael Morpurgo’s literary hero. HELEN BLOW caught up with him ahead of appearances at Cheltenham’s music and literature festivals was about five years ago but it’s lovely to come back again,” said Michael. “This time it’s very much about the First World War and its anniversary, so it’s an ideal setting for Private Peaceful. “The first time we did this concert, which is 90 minutes of reading and songs, it was most successful.” Although the book is not aimed at children, he feels it helps the younger generation to understand what went on. “Private Peaceful is about a young man’s life, his aspirations and about giving them up to become a soldier. “Around 3,000 soldiers were condemned to death and 300 actually died. Half of them were suffering from shell shock; there was no mercy and very little justice in this kind of thing. “Now the war is far in the past, the only thing that links most of us to that time is the stories,” he said.
10
A chance meeting with schoolchildren at a cemetery in Belgium helped Michael realise how to keep history alive. He was visiting the area following the publication of Private Peaceful at the time. “They were being really noisy and messing about and I was about to complain to their teacher, but within a couple of minutes of walking among the graves, they became silent. “The teacher spotted me and came over to talk to me. He said they had studied the novel and had made a wreath to put on the gravestone of another cemetery and urged me to visit it, which I did. “I think it is impossible for any of us now to understand the full horror of the First World War; what we need are stories of individuals so it is more accessible. “For many children who wouldn’t have known anyone who served in the war, Private Peaceful is the unknown soldier.” gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

The latest in chic French skincare has arrived in Cheltenham and along with it, a new beauty salon to tempt us. LUCY PARFORD found out how we can look as good as our stylish friends across the Channel
L
OOKING good has always been a bit of a French obsession so it’s not surprising so many revolutionary skincare products have been emerging from across the Channel. This a country where women take their appearance seriously, from maintaining a svelte figure to looking chic at every age. From brands such as Luxe and Caudalie to La Roche-Posay and Bioderma . . . we’ve seen more French regimes make it on to our bathroom shelves in recent years and our skin is all the more grateful for it. The latest elite French skincare brand to arrive in the Cotswolds is Yon-Ka Paris, which is a family-owned company. The founders were passionate about aromatherapy and set up the Laboratories Multaler in the Fifties. At the time, they were only able to draw upon a small number of scientists, chemists and doctors. They experimented with new products, exploring the therapeutic properties of plants. Their research eventually led them to discover a unique combination of five essential oils from the Mediterranean – lavender, geranium, rosemary, cypress and thyme – which has become the cornerstone of the Yon-Ka skincare line. The range, which also contains active ingredients such as vitamins, fruit acids,
20
polyphenols and peptides, includes products for the face and body, including suncare. Yon-Ka has now arrived in Cheltenham thanks to Kerry Willcox, who has just opened Tonic beauty salon in the Suffolks. Kerry trained at the Cotswold Academy of Health and Beauty in Cirencester and set up a mobile business, Phoenix Home Spa, before finding the perfect premises in Great Norwood Street. “The idea was always to have my own salon and business,” says the 23-year-old. “I’ve scaled back Phoenix and don’t do any individual home visits any more but we do still do a lot of pamper parties in the Cotswolds and I have a team of therapists who help with them. “I have managed to transfer most of my clients over to the salon. I was surprised because I didn’t think everybody would transfer, the mobile side is more convenient, but a lot of people have which has been really nice.” Tonic is a bijou salon with just one treatment room but is wonderfully cosy with a minimalist, neutral, Oriental feel. Treatments on offer are inspired by the Yon-Ka phyto-aromatic products and include facial treatments such as Le Grande Classique, Vital Défense and Plasir d’Arômes. Spa body treatments include the Neroli gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

HIS is one of my favourite times of the year, lots of vibrant British produce is appearing and as the temperature creeps up, we crave lighter dishes and the demand for fish rises. I’ve gone for mackerel, a beautiful, still affordable and easily one of the tastiest and
easiest fish to cook. Please don't waste the skin, it's delicious served crisp and good for you too. Elderflowers and peas had to have a staring role here too, and I hope you'll enjoy these simple recipes, with just a little twist that will wow your guests.
Seared Mackerel,Watermelon, Pickled Cucumber & Horseradish Ingredients Serves 4
4 mackerel fillets 30g olive oil ½ lemon Seasoning Pickled cucumber
1 ½ cucumbers 50g white balsamic vinegar 15g caster sugar 30g water 50g olive oil ½ lime, juiced Horseradish yoghurt 125g natural yoghurt 10-20g grated horseradish, depending on your taste 7g honey 10g water Few drops lime juice Seasoning Watermelon Bunch of watercress
Method For the mackerel Preparing the mackerel, remove any of the small @WeekendGlos
Place all the other ingredients in a small saucepan, bring to the boil, cool. Pour over the cucumber, allow to marinate for 2-3 hours.
bones with tweezers. Heat a large non-stick pan over a medium heat, season the fillets with salt and pepper. Add the olive oil to the pan and when very hot, place the mackerel fillets in skin side down. Fry for two minutes and then turn the fillets over, remove the pan from the heat and leave for a minute, the residual heat will carry on cooking the fish.
For the horseradish yoghurt Place all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Mix well and season to taste. Keep in the refrigerator until needed. For the watermelon Cut the watermelon into 2cm thick slices, remove the rind and then cut into 1.5cm x 6cm strips, they will look a little like a fish finger shape. You will need four of these. Cut a little of the other

watermelon into a small dice. Place to one side. Heat a medium frying pan with the olive oil and when very hot add the watermelon fingers, just cook on the one side for approximately two minutes. Remove from the pan and season. Watercress Pick the leaves off the larger watercress; you will be using the stalks. Place to one side. Pick through the remaining watercress and place the baby watercress to one side, you will be using these as garnish as well. To serve Squeeze a little lemon juice over the mackerel and serve. Place a finger of watermelon, seared side upwards, on the plate with the mackerel next to it. Place the cucumber ribbons around, scatter a little watermelon dice. Drizzle with the horseradish yoghurt, finally garnish with the watercress stalks and baby watercress.
Pea Pannacotta, Chilled Pea,Apple and Mint This is fresh and light and is a great summer appetiser served chilled. It has texture and balance, acidity and sweetness. The pannacotta is set here with gelatine but you could use agar agar, a seaweed with great gelling properties.
Ingredients
Serves 6
For the Pea Pannacotta 400g peas 150g green of leek, chopped 300g milk 50g unsalted butter 3 leaves gelatine, soaking in cold water for five minutes Seasoning For the peas 75g podded peas, blanched and shelled ½ Granny Smith apple, peeled and finely diced 4 mint leaves 4 pea tendrils For the dressing 5g cider vinegar 60g olive oil 1 egg yolk 20g water Pinch caster sugar Seasoning For the goats' cheese cream 50g soft goats' cheese
25g Philadelphia 25g mascarpone 25g double cream seasoning
a blender. Blend until smooth, season. Pass through a fine sieve
Method For the Pea Pannacotta Place the butter into a saucepan, when melted add the green of leek. Cook for 1 minute add the peas, cook for 2 minutes, add the milk and bring to the boil. Simmer for three minutes, remove from the heat. Squeeze out the water from the gelatine and add the gelatine to the saucepan, stir until dissolved. Pour into
bowls; I use six 6.5cm x 5cm high bowls for this. Allow to cool. Mix the peas with the diced apple, chop the mint at the last minute and add to the mix. Mix the peas with a little of the dressing, season and spoon on to the panacotta, add pea tendrils, dot with the goats scheese cream and serve. For the dressing Place the egg yolk into a bowl and whisk in the apple vinegar. Gradually whisk in the olive oil. Taste and season. Refrigerate until needed.
into a measuring jug and divide between the serving
For the goats' cheese cream Crush the goats cheese and mix until smooth, beat in the Philadelphia, then the mascarpone, and finally the cream. Season and place in a squeezy bottle.

Elderflower Custards with Marinated Strawberries The first signs that summer is truly on its way, elderflowers and the British strawberry, certainly the best in the world in my opinion. The elderflowers have such an intoxicating scent that pairs well with berries and citrus.
Ingredients Serves 8
Elderflower custards 450g double cream 150g milk Juice of one lemon Grated zest of a lemon 8 egg yolks 65g caster sugar 4 Heads of elderflowers Marinated strawberries 32-40 British strawberries 2 heads of elderflowers 30g icing sugar Few drops of lemon juice Strawberry puree 200g very ripe strawberries 10-20g caster sugar Âź lemon, juiced
Method
Place the lemon juice in a @WeekendGlos
medium saucepan with the elderflower, bring to boil. Add the cream and milk in a medium saucepan with the lemon zest and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and allow infusing for 30 minutes. Put back on the heat and return to the boil. Meanwhile, beat together the egg yolks and caster sugar until pale. Pour the cream mixture on to the egg yolks, mixing constantly, and then return it to the pan. Cook over a low heat for three minutes, stirring all the time, and then push the mixture through a fine sieve. Wrap cling film around the bases of eight metal rings, 6.5cm in diameter and 5cm deep, making sure it comes half way up the sides of each one. Place them in a roasting
27
tin with a cloth in the bottom to stop the mixture overheating and scrambling. Pour in the cream mixture, and then pour enough boiling water into the tin to come a third of the way up the sides of the rings. Place in an oven preheated to 110C/ Gas Mark 1/4 and cook for 30–40 minutes, until just set.The cream should wobble ever so slightly when shook. Remove from the oven and cover the whole tray with cling film so no air escapes, pierce in a few places. Leave for 30 minutes, then remove the cling film, carefully pour off the water and place the tray in the fridge. Leave for at least three hours, preferably overnight, until set. Remove from the moulds when needed, glaze the tops with a little icing and blowtorch until golden. Place on the plates, arrange the strawberries around and
drizzle with the strawberry puree. Finally tap one of the elderflowers over the dish so some of the flowers drop onto the plate. For the marinated strawberries Hull the strawberries and cut 1/3 of them in half. Place in a small bowl. Shake the elderflowers over to release their petals. Add the lemon juice and the sugar and stir until coated. Cover with cling film and allow to marinate for an hour.Turn the strawberries over every 20 minutes. Spoon on to the plate when needed. For the strawberry puree Place all the ingredients in a liquidiser and blend till smooth. Pass through a fine chinois and store in bottle in the fridge.

HE view from the garden of The Black Horse in Amberley is reason enough to visit. The beer garden must be one of the most idyllic places in the valleys to enjoy a summer evening pint. For us a trip up to Minchinhampton Common followed by a drink in The Black Horse is one of the joys of living in the Stroud valleys. With our four-year-old and eight-year-old, The Black Horse serves food at ideal times. Evening meals start from 5pm on weekdays and food is served all day at weekends. We called in on a Saturday afternoon, one of those gorgeous days when the buttercups are at their peak and we feel blessed to live here. But great minds think alike, and we were not alone in being drawn to The Black Horse. It’s a popular destination when the sun shines. The menu is a reasonably-priced mix of classics including a range of burgers with beef, chicken breast or homemade veggie options and a host of fillings, from £7.95. There are also baguettes on the menu from £5.45 making The Black Horse a good choice for a light lunch. I was sorely tempted by the ‘Browner’ burger, with an enticing topping of Stilton, goats' cheese, red onion, gherkins and bacon (£10.45). But I saved that for another visit and ordered the chicken creole enchiladas served with chips and salad (£8.95). This was a really tasty plate with lots of good summery flavours of sizzling chicken, peppers and melted cheese. Indeed, while our two youngsters were happy with a child-sized portion of sausage and mash (£4) my daughter also enthusiastically enjoyed chunks of my chicken.
29
My partner’s fish and chips (£8.95), was also a good version of the pub classic, a generous portion and a tasty chunk of fish. We were quick off the mark and managed to get our order before the evening rush, and food arrived reasonably promptly. But repeat visits to the bar involved patience and the staff seemed stretched in the garden. No-one cleared our plates for instance, and with tired children in tow, we had to remind the busy waiter to bring their ice cream. I guess there are moments when The Black Horse is a victim of its own success, and if we hadn’t had two fidgety children with us, then sitting in the beer garden would hardly have been a hardship. For a pub in such a lovely position, it could easily have gone the ‘gastro’ route. We’re pleased that it remains an affordable, beautiful destination. Victoria Temple

ORD is spreading fast about Simon Ho’s tasty fishcakes. Handmade with chunks of fresh fish, light and fluffy potato and just the right amount of seasoning, they used to be one of the best kept secrets on Cheltenham’s Bath Road. But Simon only makes a limited number from the day’s fish delivery, which means customers at his Samphire Fishmongers have to be quick to secure them for their suppers. “It’s important that they re as fresh as they can possibly be,” says Simon. “In general I buy small amounts of different fish every day because I like to keep it really fresh. “We make the fish cakes using a mixture of white fish, including cod, haddock and pollock, and Wilja potatoes; it has to be Wilja because they’re best for mashing and don’t absorb the water. To this we add dried herbs and salt and dip them in breadcrumbs. “People love them: we’re up to making 25 a day now and will have to increase this number again soon as they’re so popular.” Something else that’s been going down particularly well with time-pressed shoppers is Samphire’s oven-ready fish and vegetables, sold in a special bag that just needs to be popped into the cooker when customers get home. Then there are the shop's packs of fresh sushi, lovingly crafted by Simon’s wife Jade who gets up at 5am every morning to combine traditional Japanese ingredients and fish with locally-sourced vegetables to make tasty light bites for a steady stream of appreciative customers. “We had always made sushi at home but took a course with some Japanese sushi masters when we decided to start the fishmongers,” says Simon. “We feel it’s important to add value to some of our fish as a lot of people may not have the time or the knowledge to be able

Artist Andrew Joynes has finished the commission of his life – recreating an unbelievably elaborate fourposter bed and series of murals in homage to designer Cecil Beaton. LUCY PARFORD catches up with him, paintbrush in hand
circus act
@WeekendGlos

R
ENOWNED costume designer and fashion photographer Sir Cecil Beaton lived his life as flamboyantly as the film stars and artists he surrounded himself with. His images of celebrated stars of the day such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich and Coco Chanel, as well as royalty, exuded elegance, glamour and style, all qualities he transferred to the characterful interior of his own homes. A new exhibition, Cecil Beaton at Home, explores his retreats in Wiltshire and the private life of the man behind the camera. Curated by Andrew Ginger, director of four-poster bed specialists Beaudesert and The Cecil Beaton Fabric Collection, the exhibition includes recreations of Sir Cecil’s extravagant interiors and gardens along with previously unseen photographs, artworks, furniture and possessions from his two homes. Stow-on-the-Wold artist Andrew Joynes has been involved in the exhibition and was commissioned to recreate the dramatic murals for the Circus Bedroom reincarnation. Andrew, 45, went to art college in Cheltenham and London and now works all over the country on interior design projects, which brought him to Ashcombe House where Sir Cecil lived in the Thirties and Forties, before he moved to Reddish House in 1947. It’s where he died in 1980. Andrew works with Lower Oddington-based Rupert CharlesJones Interiors, who was working at Ashcombe, which is now owned by film director Guy Ritchie. Part of the service they offer is hand-painted finishes and handcut block prints, as well as bespoke murals. “Rupert was involved with the interior design there and I was doing various changes for him,
paint finishes, a lot of hand-painted things and a few murals,” Andrew says. “We reproduced the Fat Lady, which was one of the murals I’ve reproduced for the exhibition. “Having spent time there, it was quite a treat to be asked to be involved with the exhibition. “I’ve since read the book, The Story of a Fifteen-Year Lease which Cecil Beaton had written back in the Thirties, so it’s made me even more interested in the murals. “There is a bit in the book when he first went to the house and an archway you walk through and see this amazing house which he just fell in love with the first time he went there. “I went through the same archway and saw this amazing house. It’s quite stunning and you get a feel for the history. There are still some of the existing murals there, including a lady on horseback.” For the ones which have since disappeared, Andrew only had old black and white photographs to go on. “Andrew [Ginger] has a wealth of information about things, there were hints of colours but not very much, so from that we had to try and reproduce the colours for the murals,” he explains. “We started off just throwing ideas backwards and forwards, and then when we were pretty much certain of the plan, we moved to upscaling. We took photographs of the various stages and added things as we went along. “As I got more involved in it I felt I had a responsibility to get it right but without the colour it was quite tricky.” It took Andrew three weeks to paint the murals on giant plywood screens, so they can be moved when the exhibition ends, including as much detail as he could gather. Other highlights of the show include a recreation of a Circus Bed complete with unicorns, sea horses, Neptune and barley twist posts. The bed has been made by specialist bed-makers Beaudesert, based in Tisbury, Wiltshire, and is on
36
display in a reconstructed room lined with Andrew’s copies of the murals by Sir Cecil’s close friends Oliver Messel and Rex Whistler. “They are so over the top and that is part of their beauty,” Andrew says. “They were quite garish for the 30s, quite amazing and shocking. “It was a fascinating project to be involved with.” Also on show is Sir Cecil’s visitors’ book, which reveals the amazing list of royalty, artists and other guests who visited him, along with sculptures, paintings, fancy dress costumes, diaries, scrapbooks and press cuttings. Some of the exhibits have been loaned from the Victoria & Albert Museum, The National Portrait Gallery, the Cecil Beaton Studio Archive at Sotheby’s and private collections. Curator Andrew Ginger says: “Beaton’s two houses, near Salisbury, were his refuge from a madly heavy workload. “Beaton described his life in the country as ‘an oasis of luxury and civilisation’, which was both restorative and inspirational to his work. “The design of his home and garden was approached with the same attention to detail as any theatrical production.” • Cecil Beaton at Home: Ashcombe & Reddish is on show at Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum until September 19. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm. Admission is £8. For more details, visit www. cecilbeatonathome.com

Beaton’s legacy inspires me, says designer Laurence COTSWOLDS interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has been heavily influenced by the legacy of Sir Cecil Beaton. Laurence, who recently put his flamboyant Siddington Manor house up for sale, collaborated with interiors company Beaudesert onThe Beaton Box at Cheltenham Racecourse back in 2009. The Edwardian-style boudoir was decorated with Beatoninspired fabrics teamed with an astro-turf floor and English roses, along with photographs taken by Beaton himself. Laurence says: “There is always a reference to Cecil Beaton in everything I do.
“He was such a terribly important part of my design upbringing. I remember him being one of the first designers I recognised and it was then that I discovered all the stuff he did in Hollywood. “One of the most fascinating things is that he was so influential in creating what we think of mid-20th century style. “It’s amazing he’s being celebrated at the Salisbury Museum, he was such a fabulous man.” Laurence, who creates a range of home accessories for Littlewoods as well as making regular television appearances, said: “I used a Cecil Beaton

fabric most recently on DIY SOS, I had a project where I used the roses and Ashcombe Stripes. “It brought the Beaton story to a younger audience who had never seen it before. I was using it in a girl’s bedroom who was 17 or 18 and had never heard of him, but loved the design.” Laurence has also used Beaton fabrics in his own home. “It was quite funny the speculation we were moving back to London when we’re actually moving deeper into the Cotswolds,” he laughed. “It’s how much at home we are here.”

OW maintenance is something many gardeners strive for but when you’re dealing with 12 acres it becomes even more important. The danger is ending up with something that is easy but dull. At Forthampton Court, which has been in the Yorke family for eight generations, the garden is run with only minimal help yet the pitfall of becoming humdrum has been neatly sidestepped. Shrubberies and mature trees form an easy-to-carefor backdrop while large areas are laid to lawn, their upkeep contracted out, leaving the team of full-timer Alan Gregg, an apprentice and a part-timer free to deal with the borders that lift the garden from the ordinary. The colour is concentrated around the house and the theme is big and bold: borders are few in number but generous in size; plants are used in big clumps with much repetition, giving cohesion and avoiding a piecemeal effect. “We do try to buy big
varieties of things,” explains Mrs Yorke, “otherwise it takes such a long time to fill the space. We don’t do bonsai and alpines.” What she does do are traditional, hard-working stalwarts that, aside from a little staking, will largely take care of themselves and give a long season of flower. There are lots of peonies, clumps of hemerocallis, and big-leaved hostas. Dusty pink astrantia mingles with verbascum of the same tones while nearby the cerise heads of Knautia macedonica move gracefully on long stems. “I like things to be natural and things that blow in the wind.” The garden is blessed with the backdrop of several old walls, notably around the croquet lawn and rose garden. Here the pink-hued bricks are used to support roses, including ‘Albertine’ and ‘Mutabilis’, their blooms with hints of copper and peach contrasting perfectly with the bricks. “It’s wonderful to have the walls as a backdrop for them.” The croquet lawn is
40
home to two of the main mixed borders, which while replicating plant combinations do not exactly mirror each other. Inky aconitum and tall delphiniums in shades of blue and mauve mingle with pink spiraea, white campanula and velvety Stachys byzantina. The rose garden is a glorious mix of colours, a legacy of numerous gifts of roses. Half standard yellow ‘Sweet Wonder’ stand in each of the four beds and the roses, ranging from red to pink to apricot, are underplanted with Alchemilla mollis and nepeta. Planting in the main mixed border alongside the traditional ‘walk’ is
more regulated starting with hot colours at one end and gradually moving into more pastel shades. Shrubs, including philadelphus, golden weigela, magnolia and cornus give a solid backcloth against which are planted lupins, penstemon, alstroemeria, geranium and helianthemum. An obelisk covered in Rosa ‘Graham Thomas’ at one end and tall cardoon at the other help to add height. he walled Kitchen Garden is described as ‘work in progress’. When Mrs Yorke took over the garden 22 years ago this one-hectare area was little more than a field. Today it has been divided into four with a tapestry hedge of beech, copper beech and yew

– far more interesting than a single species hedge. While the Kitchen Garden has been tamed, not all of it is under cultivation with one quarter wild garden, another lawn and a third a play area. The final quarter is used for vegetables, which are planted to look attractive. “I make the gardeners plant everything in rows going different ways. It drives them mad,” says Mrs Yorke. Dominating the area is a magnificent Edwardian glasshouse, which was extensively refurbished for the millennium. Inside are peaches, figs and tomatoes along with salad crops and herbs. It is also

used to raise cuttings and overwinter pelargoniums. Elsewhere, pots of lilies add seasonal colour to the terrace and old troughs have been planted to bring interest to a parking area. Yet Mrs Yorke is determined not to let the garden become a millstone: “We don’t allow the garden to rule our lives and if certain bits get ignored one year then so be it. We will have a look at them next year.” It’s a relaxed attitude that seems to be working. Forthampton Court, near Tewkesbury, is open for the National Gardens Scheme from 12-4pm on Saturday July 5. Admission is £4.50. There will be teas and plants for sale.

ARTWORK by legendary animator Harold Whitaker is being sold by Stroud Auction Rooms on July 9-10. The pictures are part of the estate of the Stroud-based artist, best known for his work on Animal Farm, the first fulllength animated feature to be made in Britain and released worldwide. The 1954 film, based on the book by George Orwell, was just one of many animations in which Whitaker was involved. Others included Heavy Metal, Popeye the Sailor, Asterix and The Lone Ranger. He also completed a full page comic strip in colour for every issue of Micky Mouse Weekly for more than three years, featuring versions of Disney cartoons including Wind in the Willows, Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland. Mr Whitaker worked for Halas &

Batchelor, Britain’s biggest animation producers, who had studios in London and Stroud. When the company was sold in the early 1980s, he became master animator for Animation People and continued to work into his mid-90s. He often said his proudest moment was the publication of his book Timing for Animation in 1981. It was revised in 2002 with an introduction by John Lasseter, president of Pixar Studios. When Mr Whitaker died last Christmas aged 93, his animation desk remained in his attic studio, left as it was when he finished his last drawing. Now much of his work will go under the hammer at Stroud Auction Rooms – just a stone’s throw away from his former studio. Also being sold is Mr Whitaker’s personal collection of Roman artefacts.

NTIQUE portraits from a Cheltenham collector saw four-figure results at a sale in the impressive surroundings of Pittville Pump Room. The Tayler & Fletcher sale saw some fine 17th, 18th and 19th century examples come under the auctioneer’s gavel. Among the highlights was £3,000 paid for this 17th century portrait of a lady with brown ringlets, wearing large pearl drop earrings and a pearl necklace. Other portraits reached £2,200, £2,800. An 1840 portrait of Mr Tyritt-Drake of Amersham, Bucks, in military dress with blue velvet coat and red waistcoat managed £1,800. A mid-19th century Irish portrait of Lady Georgiana Ellen Croker dressed in blue grey satin with a white lace collar took £1,700, while a bid of £950 secured a classic 19th century @WeekendGlos
English school portrait of a gentleman wearing a black top coat and white cravat. Other works from this consignment also fared well, including £1,300 for a large 19th century white Carrera marble classical female bust. David Dickinson and the Dickinson’s Real Deal production team were at the sale, filming for ITV’s Antique’s Challenge programme. Lots sold on behalf of the “television vendors” included £320 that changed hands for a large Limited Edition colour print after Salvador Dali “The Persistence of Memory”, a collection of mostly boxed Dinky and Corgi toys that raced away at £340, an extensive collection of 1960s/70s footballers’ autographs (including Pele) that scored at £300 and an interesting pair of early 20th century Japanese papier mache wall pockets (as Noh Masks) that found favour at £100.

E’RE going on holiday to a dungeon!” my son, excitedly told his friends. The Dungeon is the unlikely name of ‘one wing’ of the stunningly pretty holiday cottage, Strawberry Water, in undiscovered North Devon. A few days later we were driving down twisting hollow lanes, past bluebell-filled woods and meandering streams, leaving the stresses of school and work behind. Arriving at Strawberry Water is breathtaking. When it comes to location Strawberry Water plays a trump card. What could be better than being 10 minutes’ walk from one of the most stunning beaches and coast paths in the country? Strawberry Water lies at the head of a picturesque valley in a little known stretch of coastline near Hartland, in North Devon. It’s a large handsome house, which can be rented as a whole, sleeping 18, or split into three. The main house sleeps 10 and with a huge open-plan kitchen, dining area and living room would be perfect for family gatherings. The other sections, The Dungeon and The Cottage, both sleep four, and are also available for rent separately
@WeekendGlos
on certain dates. We were set to enjoy a stay in The Dungeon, which could not have been more incongruously named. It was light and spacious, with French doors opening straight on to a garden, complete with barbecue and outdoor shower, for rinsing off the seawater from the beach. And it’s utterly stylish. This isn’t country cottage shabby chic, it’s more ‘urban style’ and ‘quirky cool’ with a touch of romanticism. There’s a massive Smeg fridge, and a chic pair of lime green sofas, reputedly from a London nightclub. Upstairs the master bedroom has a French boudoir vibe with an enormous double bed and wardrobe. The four of us completely loved it. Its name ‘dungeon’ is a curious legacy from Strawberry Water’s former life, but it’s a saucy story not entirely suitable for this magazine. You’ll have to visit to uncover the secret. This was family holiday heaven. The garden was a huge three acres, complete with fire pits for nights of star-gazing, streams for exploring and paddling and a neighbouring field plenty big enough for playing football.

If you can drag yourself away from Strawberry Water, then a pretty stroll down a track leads to dramatic cliffs, and the stunning beach of Welcombe Mouth. This is one of those beaches, that I almost regret naming in print. It’s one of those mythical beaches, that people try to keep a little secret. We’ve visited this area many times, but even on an August bank holiday, it’s never ever crowded. It’s a dramatic, stunning spot. At low tide there are rock pools to explore and paddle in, sand to dig, dams to be made – perfection for my eight-year-old and four-year-old. At high tide, the Atlantic crashes against the sea-worn pebbles at the top of the beach and it’s time to retreat to the cliff tops and watch sunsets, walk the coastpath, explore the woodland or stroll up the hill to the nearby pub, the friendly and also curiously funky Old Smithy Inn. What I loved most about our stay at Strawberry Water was that we could easily fill our days without getting in the car. Being able to stroll out of the door down almost car-free lanes, hear sky larks overhead, and watch the sun sparkle over the Western horizon, all on the doorstop. Yes a very curious ‘dungeon’ indeed. There can be very few dungeons that you long to return to.

A mystery adventure in which the heroine is involved in a bewildering chase into the heart of Cirencester during the heat of a 1950s August is the latest novel from Sydebased author Lorna Gray. For most of the guests at a busy hotel, the summer has proved pleasant if a little damp. For newly arrived Kate Ward, however, the previous few weeks have been a disaster that have left her at her wits’ end. Find out if she is wrong to suspect that a guest at the hotel is toying with her life or if the mysterious owners of an inconspicuous grey car are playing with her mind.
The adventurer, born survivor and bestselling author has now turned his attentions to writing this guide to achieving peak fitness through 30-minute express workouts. Along with the help of the virtually unknown fitness guru Natalie Summers, the Chief Scout has shared the exercises that have honed his body into the cut lines represented in the book which has a photo story feel to the moves. The exercises are well described in words and images. There is also a section on how to fuel your workouts. This is not a programme for the meek, but for the determined.

INSPIRINGA

With her first new album for seven years, Suzanne Vega tells Helen Blow she’s back for the forseeable
I
T’S been almost 30 years since Suzanne Vega burst on to the music scene with the awardwinning single Luka. Following in the path of folk rock protest singers like her hero Bob Dylan, Suzanne came to be regarded as the vanguard of a new generation of female singer songwriters. She returns to the UK this summer with a new tour, following the release of her first new album of new songs for seven years, Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles, including a date at Cheltenham Town Hall on Monday. With songs such as Marlene on the Wall, Tom’s Diner and her hugely successful album Solitude Standing, Suzanne has inspired a generation of female artists from Tracey Chapman to Alanis Morrisette. Considering she’s been performing since 1984, it is surprising when she tells me that, fundamentally, not much has changed. “If you think about it, you get up on stage, sing some songs and make the audience laugh a bit, and that’s what I love about this business,” said the 54-year-old star. “I’m pleased to say there is a real mix of ages coming to my concerts these days; parents bring their children, children bring their parents.” The Cheltenham concert will be a mix of old, well-loved songs and some of Suzanne’s newer tunes and will, of course, include the Grammynominated Luka, and Tom’s Diner. “I’ll also include quite a few of my
new songs; my latest album made the Top 40 in the UK, so I was really thrilled about that,” she said. So in a way it will be a bit of a journey through her singing career, from the early successes to the new. “The highlights have definitely been when Luka was such a great success, but it was also quite a stressful time for me and I’m glad it’s not crazy like that these days, because I wouldn’t have been able to handle that all the time. “It’s also given me the chance to meet some of my heroes, such as Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Paul Simon and Sting.” Suzanne admits that she has always worked very hard on her songwriting, right from the age of 11 when she wrote her first song. “That one took me three years to finish but when I finally finished it, I thought it wasn’t bad,” she said. “The second song came pouring out and it was then that I really thought I had a chance. “I’m older now and have really high standards. Songwriting doesn’t get any easier but I still enjoy it, of course. “Of course I have a family now who take up a lot of my time and I wouldn’t have it any other way; family is very important to me.” And what of the future, when she returns to the States after her tour? “I am starting a new album right now,” she said. “I don’t want it to be another seven years between albums!” Tickets for Suzanne Vega cost from £27.50. DES(S)ERT ISLAND DISCS, GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL HEAVEN for columnist Quentin Letts (pictured, right) is sitting in a deckchair on a hot day at the Cheltenham cricket festival. The Daily Mail theatre critic and parliamentary sketchwriter tries to make sure his busy diary is always free for the July event. “It’s one of my favourite things to do,” he said. “It’s my idea of heaven on earth.” In fact cricketing jargon creeps in quite often during my chat with Quentin, ahead of his appearance at a charity event at Gloucester Cathedral in support of the Three Choirs Festival. Quentin will be discussing the music he would choose should he ever be stuck on a desert island in Des(s)ert Island Discs today. “My batting list includes a lot of classical music because that is what I usually listen to,” he said. “It’s very difficult to make a list with so much choice; it’s a bit like choosing your world 11 cricket team - you want to jam everyone in.” Dessert and wine will be served during the event at 7.30pm at the Chapter House. Tickets cost £20 from 08456 521823 or www.3choirs.org

watch OUT FOR A TASTE OF HONEY
EVERYMAN THEATRE, CHELTENHAM
PLAYING the role of a pregnant teenager in gritty northern drama ATaste of Honey is a new challenge for acclaimed young actress, Rebecca Ryan. But with parts in Waterloo Road and Shameless already behind her, the role of Jo in Shelagh Delaney’s hardhitting play should present no problems for the 23-yearold. Best known as Debbie Gallagher in the Channel 4 hit series Shameless and Vicki McDonald in the BBC’s Waterloo Road, Rebecca is no stranger to tackling social issues and difficult situations through her acting. “In ATaste of Honey, Jo doesn’t have the best relationship with her mother, who is always leaving her on her own and going off with
different men,” she said. “Jo meets a black sailor and gets pregnant but when he leaves she is left alone until she meets a gay man, who offers his help. “They are similar sorts of issues as in Waterloo Road, but what makes this so different is the time period it is set in. “These days attitudes to pregnancy outside marriage, being gay and different cultures have changed but in the ‘50s it was such a taboo subject.” ATaste of Honey is Manchester-born Rebecca’s first theatre tour. Peformances take place from Tuesday to next Saturday at 7.45pm. with 2pm matinees on Thursday and Saturday. Tickets cost from £10 to £28 . Call 01242 572573.

THE
final word COLUMNIST SALI GREEN
O
NE of my best friends got married earlier this month and it turned out to be one of the most spectacular occasions I had ever attended. I met Phoebe Vela about 15 years ago (how time flies) and although our lives have taken very different paths, we are as close as ever. I love her to bits. At her wedding to John Hitchcox she arrived on a boat, rowed by a dreadlocked male beauty, at a lakeside woodland location. What more fitting place to marry than The Phoebe with Sali and her mum Lakes by yoo, which John has designed and developed. Phoebe was always going to look captivating? She has flawless skin and doe eyes. She had three bridal outfits, including one by Stella McCartney, with rich red tones and tiny white flowers in her silken hair, she was serene with contentment. The simplicity and subtle detail of her wedding look communicated her minimalist yet classic taste. At the outdoor humanist ceremony under a huge canopy we were treated to an acoustic rendition of Spandau Ballet’s True, by none other than Gary Kemp. The best man was Simon Le Bon, dressed in a dapper dark pink suit with bright pink tie. The wedding ring for the bride and a bracelet for the groom were passed around the whole congregation so that we could each hold and bless them. I love this kind of tradition – so simple and so meaningful. The couple’s matrons of honour and two youngest children did readings full of thought, warmth and humour. After the ceremony there were stunning fireworks out on the lake with pastel-coloured smoke and then we were invited to pass through the woods. Here we found a trail of little lights, happy photos hanging on the trees and a plethora of watering holes, including cocktail bars, a G&T bar and a Champagne boat. Chefs stood at a barbecue and made mini burgers and delicacies. We were overawed with pleasure and gratitude, it was beyond beautiful, it actually felt magical. And that was the intention. There was a fortune teller in the woods and girls dressed as nymphs and fairies. The speeches were both moving and funny and a tribute to love

and devotion. Those gathered felt honoured to be included – for 400 guests the atmosphere felt surprisingly intimate. The meal was a veritable banquet. Dessert was a giant Black Forest gateau by Heston Blumenthal: the only wedding cake he’s done. Models, rock stars, designers, politicians, writers, actors and journalists floated around everywhere we glanced. Kate Moss casually posed for photographs with the bride and Fergie. A super-group was formed that night with Simon Le Bon, Gary Kemp and a man from Pink Floyd. The first and almost certainly only night I’ll be sharing the dance floor with Patsy Palmer, Tina Hobley and Andrew Neil. Phoebe and John: Thank you for sharing your wedding day with us. Your love is clear, generous and evident. May you grow and support each other and your lovely family as long as you live.

my ideal
High Society is one of my favourite all-time films. If it was with Lucy [her daughter] and the girls we’d probably watch a rom-com of some sort with Cameron Diaz in it likeThe Holiday. We love things like that.
Dead or alive, who’s coming to your dinner party?
John F Kennedy, the King, MaggieThatcher and Chris Martin from Coldplay. That would be a good night.
WEEKEND...
Quick fire . . . Book or Kindle? Book Newspaper or TV? Newspaper Early-bird or lie-in? Lie-in

How would you describe your ideal weekend?
Spending time with friends and family. It involves food and drink and lots of laughs.
What would you watch on TV?
Probably wouldn’t. If it was a winter weekend we might watch Downton Abbey but during the summer months we tend not to watch it at all.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
Well, if we keep it to the Cotswolds, I’d probably take my dogs for a walk along the River Coln or have friends round for lunch or a very casual supper and things like that.
What would you eat?
Oh God. A seafood salad. I don’t eat meat and I’m wheat-free so it kind of limits what I eat but I eat a lot of fish and vegetables. The last two years I’ve been wheat-free but I haven’t eaten meat for 30 years but fish yeah, something like a seafood risotto or in the summer I love doing half a lobster or a crisp salad for friends. Simple and delicious. We’ve got an excellent fishmonger in Cheltenham’s Bath Road so I get all my fresh fish from him.
If you settled down for a film, what would you watch? @WeekendGlos
