F anyone’s guaranteed to cheer you up as the nights draw in, it’s a ditty by Pam Ayres. I remember going to see her at The Everyman years ago. If I’m honest, it was under sufferance. My mother was desperate to see her and I was just tagging along, being a dutiful daughter and getting the interval drinks in. But Pam was hilarious. I – and the rest of the sellout audience – was totally charmed by her warmth and her wit. A few years later, I happened to be sitting next to her at a literary lunch in the Cotswolds, and again, she was enormous fun. It’s her easy charm and downto-earth manner that’s precisely why she’s been filling theatres and festivals for the past three decades. As I write this, whilst I and the rest of the Weekend team scoff unfeasibly large slices of M&S banoffee cake, one particular Pam Ayres ditty springs to mind.

@WeekendGlos “Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth “And spotted the dangers beneath “All the toffees I chewed, “And the sweet sticky food. “Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth. “I wish I’d been that much more willin’ “When I had more tooth there than fillin’ “To give up gobstoppers, “From respect to me choppers, “And to buy something else with me shillin’. “When I think of the lollies I licked “And the liquorice allsorts I picked, “Sherbet dabs, big and little, “All that hard peanut brittle, “My conscience gets horribly pricked.” Oh dear. Best lay off the cake. Tanya Gledhill weekend@glosmedia.co.uk 01242 278066

This issue’s contributors were asked: Cheltenham is gearing up for its Comedy Festival. Who makes you laugh?

“Griff’s obsessed with boats and he’s quite school-masterly, and he gets genuinely annoyed with Dara and me,” Rory is reported of saying of hisThree Men In A Boat co-stars Griff Rhys Jones and Dara O’Briain. “I’ve known Griff since we were at Cambridge, so he always treats me as that sort of naughty boy he’s always had to put up with. “They’ve all been absolutely amazing fun.”

The Blur bassist’s five children make him laugh – along with Mr Men Books. “They’re clever and funny, just the perfect length and they suit all ages – they keep me happy as much as they do the kids,” he told the Daily Mail. “As far as I’m concerned the author – Roger Hargreaves – is right up there withTruman Capote.”

“Whenever I’m in an awkward situation or a particularly formal setting I tend to start laughing uncontrollably,” says feature writer Jonny. “At school I was always the one who would find the smallest and stupidest things the funniest. When it comes to stand-up, Bill Bailey is beyond compare for me. “His gig at Cheltenham Town Hall last year was enough to reduce me to tears.”

“Our daughter Bee,” says Weekend EditorTanya. “She’s two going on 22 and makes me cry with laughter every day with the things she comes out with. “But if I was to choose a comedian, I watched Simon Evans for the first time on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow the other night and he was absolutely hillarious. “Very, very funny.”

“When my son was little, he used to get the giggles and laugh uncontrollably, setting the rest of us off – his laugh was contagious,” says feature writer Helen. “As far as performers are concerned, Sean Lock and Rob Brydon are always funny, and onTV, the shows that make me belly-laugh are Would I Lie toYou and 8 Out of 10 Cats Do Countdown; outrageous but very funny.”

THEREWASA

grand lady of rhyme She says she’s not a poet but rather a writer of rhymes . . . HELEN BLOW caught up with Pam Ayres as she got word-perfect for a new show at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre

@WeekendGlos

W

HEN Pam Ayres chooses material for a show, she has an embarrassment of riches to pick from. The grand lady of rhyme has been delighting her fans for almost 40 years now, after appearing on Opportunity Knocks in 1975. Since then she has published many books of her poetry from the funny Oh, I Wish I’d Looked After Me Teeth to the more serious A September Song. For her appearance at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham tomorrow and Monday she will read a selection of poems, with a few stories and jokes thrown in for good measure. “I’ll also be reading bits from my autobiography,” she said. “It’s true that I have so much material, it’s difficult to decide what to include. People have their favourites but you can’t include them all. “I try to introduce a lot of variety; it’s something of a knack to put a show together.” Pam has never considered herself a poet, but rather a writer of rhymes. “They were just something fun that I had written that made people laugh,” she said, but later acceded: “Some of the ones I have written latterly are poems but I most certainly do not consider myself a poet of any kind.” Born and brought up in the Vale of the White Horse, she worked for the Civil Service after leaving school, before signing up to join the Woman’s Royal Air Force. “I wanted to be a performer from infants’ school,” she confessed. “It came as naturally to me as languages or maths comes to other people. “The first time I was in the school play I was the queen and after that I was hooked. I never thought my love of performing could earn me a living through.” Pam was only 18 when she joined the WRAF and was posted to the Far East. “While I was there I wrote to all the drama schools in Britain but they were all obsessed with the classics and that just wasn’t me,” she said. She started performing in local folk clubs and was then asked to do a slot on Radio Oxford. “There was always a club nearby to perform in and I had a platform,” she said. “I was lucky that they laughed and came up to me afterwards wanting to buy the poems.

“I sold 7,000 copies of a pamphlet and then got the radio slot. “I was so pleased in the way it had gone across I did hope it would work again. “I had a very encouraging experience in my own small sphere.” But it was after appearing on Opportunity Knocks with Hughie Green that her big break came along. Since then she has always been busy and says her audiences are very loyal, always coming back for more. Oh, I Wish I’d Looked After Me Teeth, probably her best known poem, came in the top 10 of a recent BBC poll of the nation’s best-loved comic poems. “I have been tremendously busy this year. “I’ve already done 40 performances and have 20 more dates in the autumn,” said Pam, who is now 67. “After this year, however, I will be doing much less.” The youngest of six children, Pam has only moved a short distance away from her childhood home in Stanford in the Vale to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. Married to theatre producer Dudley Russell, the couple have two sons, William and James, and share their

smallholding with rare breeds of cattle, as well as sheep, pigs, chickens and guinea fowl. Pam is a keen gardener and beekeeper and her hobbies also include painting, drawing and rehoming hedgehogs. She’s looking forward to returning to Cheltenham with her show. “I like Cheltenham for all sorts of reasons and the Everyman is a lovely theatre that is a great place to play,” she said. “It has a wonderfully intimate feeling and very friendly. It feels like you are playing to a few friends.” ■ Pam Ayres is at the Everyman Theatre on Sunday and Monday at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £25.50 to £29.50 from 01242 572573 or online at everymantheatre.org.uk

MS is a frightening disease and a diagnosis is even worse when you’re a mum with a young family to cope with. JONATHAN WHILEY talked to Nicola Lay who has set up her own support group

N

ICOLA Lay first realised she had a problem when her hands went numb and she could barely use them. Even the simplest of tasks; writing, holding a knife to cut up her food or tying up her hair, proved too challenging. “I went to the doctors and they said that stress was causing my neck muscles to tighten and therefore squashing my nerves,” she says of the experience which took place in June 2010. “I was given muscle relaxants to help. I went back a couple of weeks later as my hands hadn’t improved at all and saw another doctor who looked at my records and asked about my family history. “I explained that my brother has multiple sclerosis and he instantly said, ‘that’s what I think you have’.” Her brother was diagnosed with MS six years ago after his arms and legs both began to feel weak. Now he has a monthly infusion of antibody Tysabri to control the condition which means he has problems with his eyes and speech. “When researching the condition, I realised that I had several of the symptoms,” Nicola says. It all dates back to 2005 when optic neuritis – inflammation of the optic nerve – caused blindness in one of her eyes for three months.

20

“I was told that they wouldn’t look into it further unless something else happened,” the 32-year-old from Tewkesbury says. “Over the years I had a few occasions of numbness which the doctor put down to a trapped nerve.” Optic neuritis as it happens, was one of the first symptoms of MS that the married mum-of-two experienced. But it was five years later – after spells of numbness that would last for three months at a time – that she was officially diagnosed. “The neurologist arranged for me to be sent for an MRI and tests which look to see how quickly signals are sent from your eyes and arms to your brain,” she says. “Unfortunately they came back positive and he gave me my diagnosis. “It was upsetting but I had already come to the conclusion that I probably did have MS so it wasn’t a shock. “As I wanted another child we decided to put off starting medication. “I had another relapse around four months later but Joshua was born in February 2012 and six months later I began injecting Avonex.” The relapses continued though and Nicola switched to taking a tablet called Gileyna. Since November last year she hasn’t had any MS symptoms. “I’m quite fortunate that if I’m not having a relapse I don’t tend to get day-to-day symptoms,” she says. gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

Facts ■ More than 100,000 people live with multiple sclerosis in the UK. ■ 100 people are diagnosed with MS every week in the UK. ■ Most people are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s. ■ MS affects almost three times as many women as men. ■ MS can get steadily worse, or remain unpredictable throughout your life – one day you can be fine, the next you might lose your sight or be unable to move. ■ High profile people with MS include Jack Osbourne. ■The MS Society has a freephone helpline on 0808 800 8000.

MS sufferer Nicola Lay has set up a support group for other mums

“I see myself as being very lucky as some people have many symptoms and do struggle with them.” After her diagnosis, Nicola went in search of advice for mums dealing with the condition. But after struggling to find any, she decided to set up her own. Over the past two years, muMS UK, a support group on Facebook, has grown to more than 500 members and Nicola has tirelessly raised money to create posters and business cards that she has distributed to hospitals across the UK. “Obviously dealing with being diagnosed is hard but there is also the worry about the impact on your family.”

“Having children while dealing with the emotional and physical part of the disease and medication can be challenging. “There have been many friendships created in the group and the ladies are all so friendly and supportive. There are local meet-ups around the UK for those who would like to meet face-to-face. It is great for them to find friends who truly understand what they are going through.” As a result of her work, Nicola is one of three finalists shortlisted in the MS Society Awards which will be hosted by Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills in London next month. For Nicola, it’s all about raising

21

awareness of a condition that she believes can be misunderstood. “Many people haven’t even heard of MS and many only associate it with wheelchairs so they’re frightened when they are diagnosed,” she says. “Awareness will help people realise that their life, as they know it, isn’t over. “They need to know that there are lots of like-minded people out there living a normal life so they are not on their own.” “My motto is that I have MS but MS doesn’t have me.” ■ For more information about MS visit www.mssociety.org.uk or follow @ muMS_UK

Just days after the end of this year’s Big Feastival, held on the Blur bassist’s Cotswolds farm, he’s already in talks with co-organiser Jamie Oliver about the 2015 event. At the same time, he’s gearing up for Red Tractor Week to promote the logo that shines a light on quality British food and drink producers. It’s a busy schedule but one that Alex obviously enjoys. “Big Feastival 2014 was our best yet,” he says. “It went off like a dream and the weather was amazing. It's Claire's (his wife’s) birthday that weekend and it's never rained on her birthday since I've known her. That's one of the reasons we do it when we do.” Particular highlights for Alex included the variety of activities for children. “The Lego was great – and the Skylanders tent,” he laughs. “The waltzer was a big hit, too. We had more haystacks this year as well. It's the simple stuff that keeps kids entertained for the longest. “If the kids are happy, mum and dad can relax and I think that's why it works so well. “Jamie has four kids and I have five so we try and fill it up with as

24

much stuff for kids to do as we can. “It was great having the Roald Dahl museum here and Adam Henson's pop-up farm park, but I have to say the kids loved Fatboy Slim and Mark Hix's fishdogs as well.” Children from local schools also played a part in helping to grow potatoes for the Feastival. “The potato patch worked brilliantly, thanks to a lot of help from The Potato Council and the Royal Agricultural University,” says Alex. “The chefs loved it too. “We're planning to plant a load more stuff next year. A rosemary forest, a parsley lawn, chamomile carpet. You can never have too many fresh herbs.” Alex says it’s likely that the 2015 Feastival will continue to run over three days. “I really enjoyed Friday this year,” he says. “It seems to work as a long weekend so yes, I reckon it will continue to be a three-day event. “We're already planning for next year. It takes a lot of organising but it's wonderful to see the farm full of the things I love the most; great food and music. “The launch event on the farm in the spring went well too. It was a great night. “We had a massive bonfire and gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

r knockout pulled pork buns with fried pickled onions, and we finished up with fireworks. A great mix of people: food manufacturers, producers, distributors, chefs and farmers all sharing their expertise over a blue cheese martini or two. I think it's all set to become a regular event.” Moving on to his pop career, Alex says there are no plans for his old band Blur to perform together soon. “We all get on really well but everyone is busy doing their own thing. It was nice to catch up with Dave, the drummer at Feastival but I've no idea if or when it will ever happen again,” he reveals. Yet music, or references to it, continues to permeate his life; his blue cheese being just one example. Alex and his dairy team have just celebrated the first anniversary of ‘Blue Monday’ with a special cake. “I'm so proud of Blue Monday,” he says. “Good blue cheese is the most delicious thing on the planet but it's really tricky to get right. "It's taken years to get Blue Monday where it is now but seeing the delight on people's faces as they try it makes it all worthwhile.” In the months to come @WeekendGlos

Alex is backing the Red Tractor campaign. Below:

with Big Feastival co-organiser Jamie Oliver Alex hopes to produce more of the sheep’s milk cheese Good Queen Maude. “We've been playing with it for a while and I think we've nailed the recipe now, so stepping up production of that is my next project,” he says. “Sheep's milk cheese is lovely but it's quite rare in the UK.” Alex’s pride in his cheese is one of the reasons why he sought Red Tractor accreditation for his products, and why he’s promoting British farming excellence during the week ahead. “The Red Tractor has always been the one I look for,” says Alex, who will be kicking off its latest campaign with national and local broadcasts on Monday. “It's the largest and most recognised food assurance scheme in the UK, covering everything from meat to cereals. “It's good for the producers because it is a reason for people to choose their product and it’s good for the buyer because it gives cast iron assurance that the food is traceable and comes from a farm conforming to high standards of animal welfare and environmental stewardship.” ■ www.redtractor.org.uk

At Creed we love all things to do with food, especially from Gloucestershire. What seasonal produce should you look out for this September . . . This month marks the imminent arrival of autumn and offers some exciting new fresh produce to look out for on menus and to use in your own home cooking. Squash Varieties of squash will soon be available, with mixed-squashes arriving from mid-August to late October as pumpkin season approaches. Mixed summer squashes are well known for their colour, tasty flesh and nutty flavour. These taste beautiful when roasted and are complimented surprisingly well by chillies. Brussels sprouts Christmas might be three months away, but you can expect to see Brussels sprouts hitting the shelves soon. Why not try preparing them with bacon lardons, chestnuts or parmesan? English apples English apples are great at this time of year with Discovery apples, Early Windsor, Russets and Cox apples readily available. Plums Victoria plums and Damson plums are in abundance with a good crop from Kent. Ideal for tarts, jams and a lovely snack. Cherries With the European cherry season now at an end, you can expect to see a rise in cherry prices due to the import of North American cherries.

Sunday W

HAT’S your favourite Sunday lunch out? Supersized Yorkshire puds, lashings of gravy and plates piled high at the local carvery or something a bit more memorable? Wesley House in Winchcombe has launched a Sunday set menu which is great value and a world away from queuing up for your dinner. First, the setting is a quaint 15th century black and white merchant’s house, complete with beams and mullion windows. Step off the High Street and you’re straight into the little bar and reception area with sofas, easy chairs and a stylish display of orchids in a tall wrought-iron stand. Just beyond is the bijou dining room, again all beams and classic table settings with pretty pots of blue hydrangeas in galvanised mini-buckets. A sunny

conservatory extension is the only nod to modern architecture. Secondly, the menu offers you so much more than the traditional. Yes, you can have your Yorkshire pud but it comes with roast strip-loin of beef, seasonal vegetables and red wine jus. Or step outside your Sunday comfort zone and try something different like pan fried sea bream with a leek and chorizo fricassee or pepper and parmesan gnocchi with asparagus, roast artichoke and parmesan cream. The menu is carefully balanced by head chef Cedrik Rullier, who combines classic French influences with English seasonal produce. He’s come up with a range of five starters, mains and desserts to please most palates. One course costs £14, two courses, £20 and three courses £25. First our waiter brought us delicious warm homemade bread – onion or cheese – to have simply with butter or topped gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

with tasty tapenade. Our starters of cured sea trout and spiced crab tortellini arrived promptly, the pasta a summery-looking dish with lemongrass sauce and topped with fine strips of courgette to give colour. Mild but fragrant, it was an excellent choice. The trout, delicately sliced, was dressed prettily with tiny cubes of sweet ruby beetroot and a tangy citrus sauce to pull it all together. The lure of roast beef and Yorkshire pud for the main course was strong, but we resisted and tried something new. My roast monkfish was a delight, large chunks of fish in a delicious curry cream sauce with crushed potatoes, little florets of cauliflower and a few runners, all topped with crunchy, salty samphire. Our other choice was roast @WeekendGlos

guinea fowl, a generous amount nicely crisped on the outside and firm and delicious inside. Fondant potato, cabbage and pancetta and a thyme sauce added up to a delicious Sunday treat. For dessert we chose the traditional plum and summerberry crumble –strawberries and raspberries topped with plenty of crunch, accompanied by a velvety vanilla custard. The pistachio cake was a heavier choice, accompanied by a rich salted chocolate mousse, although some raspberries in syrup lightened things up. To round it off, what else but coffee and petit fours, served in the quaint little bar, watching the world outside go by? A perfect Sunday out. Joyce Matthews

HARVEST SWEETCORN

The price of supermarket corn-on-the-cob always drops at this time of year, but it tastes fabulous picked straight from your garden. The cobs should be ripening now and there are easy ways to tell if they’re ready to pick. Harvest them when the tassels on the end of the cobs start to shrivel. Peel back the leafy sheaf and press your thumbnail into a grain. If the cob is ready, a creamy liquid will spurt out, if the liquid is watery leave the cobs for a few days before trying again. @WeekendGlos

It’s a dog’s life Sculptor Georgie Welch takes the lead in saving the endangered Skye Terrier with some stunning sculptures

Blooming lovely Roses abound in a Longhope garden, filling the late summer air with scent

From a childhood spent making mud sculptures to crafting a piece of public art unveiled by the Princess Royal, Georgie Welch has had a meteoric rise to fame. HELEN BLOW meets the Cotswolds artist

W Georgie’s sculptures are incredibly life-like, and her Skye Terriers, bottom, are no exception. Opposite, Georgie with one of her pieces

HEN you think of endangered animals, cute terriers aren’t the first to spring to mind. But in fact among all of Britain’s native dog breeds, the adorable Skye Terrier is the one most at risk, according to the Kennel Club. These hairy little chaps are now rarer than the Giant Panda, with only 400 of them left in the UK. So to raise awareness and promote the breed, two lifesized statues of the dogs have been erected on the Isle of Skye, where the breed hails from. Artist Georgie Welch, who lives near Tetbury, was the sculptor commissioned to create the pieces for the display in the grounds of Armadale Castle, the home of the Donald Clan. And the statues were cast in bronze in the renowned Pangolin Editions foundry in Chalford, near Stroud. Georgie’s two terriers were unveiled at the castle this summer by The Princess Royal and will be on show to visitors to Skye, who will be able to find out more about this rare breed of dog. Georgie was delighted to be asked to complete the commission. “It was an absolutely wonderful experience and the location where the statues are displayed is marvellous,” she said. “They are really quite comical dogs and very friendly and visitors say it just makes them smile when they see them. “This was my first public commission – I was recommended by a client I had produced work for.” After avoding art at school, Georgie decided to take a foundation course after leaving and later ended up studying art and design in Birmingham.

32

“After I had spent two years on a painting course, I happened to wander into the sculpture department and became totally hooked, so I swapped courses,” she said. Since then she has specialised in sculpting dogs and horses from life, highlighting the natural qualities of the animals. “Spending time directly with the model is the most successful way of portraying their outer features and injecting a sense of their character into the bronze sculpture. “All of my life has been spent with horses and dogs and it is a pleasure to involve them in my daily sculpting,” said Georgie, who also spent a year studying with an equine physiotherapist. “I also studied classical figurative sculpture to help me understand the skeletal elements and how layers of muscle alter during exertion and rest.” It took her several months to complete the Skye Terriers and she sculpted them in clay before they were cast in bronze. “I also made maquettes of them as a limited edition, which were a quarter of the size of the real thing.” Georgie is now working on a second public commission for the National Memorial Arboretum in Lichfield, which will be unveiled in December. “Being the first public commission, the Skye Terriers has really given me a taste for more,” she said. “I grew up on a remote farm and my brother and I spent most of our time outdoors. We used to make mud sculptures but I never thought I would make a career from it.” Find out more about Georgie’s work by visiting her website www.georgiewelch.com gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

Left, roses are a particular feature of Valerie Boxley’s Longhope garden; above, blue hydrangeas are easy to grow – see tip, right; main image, Valerie

She gardens like crazy all winter so she can enjoy the fruits of her labours – and a glass of wine – in summer. MANDY BRADSHAW meets Valerie Boxley at her historic home in Longhope where the garden is full of colour and form

W

hen we met, Valerie Boxley was worrying about her roses. Would there be enough of a second flush of flowers by the time the garden opened? With several still blooming and numerous buds, it seemed an unnecessary concern. And anyway it’s not just roses that provide colour and interest at Cruck House. Asters in shades of mauve, pink and purple were beginning

to flower, there were late sweet peas, waving spires of Verbena bonariensis and a strong framework of foliage. It’s a far cry from the plot Valerie and her late husband Peter Whitworth took over 20 years ago. Then the garden at Longhope consisted of little beyond a large area of Tarmac, grass, neck-high nettles and a big leylandii hedge. One of their first jobs was

plant this Also known as windflowers, Japanese anemones, stalwarts of the late summer border, produce pretty papery white or pink flowers on tall stems from August through to October. They can be grown in sun or shade and are good for lighting up a dark corner. Good varieties include A. hupehensis ‘Prinz Heinrich’.

34

to severely reduce the drive and create a more welcoming entrance to the house, parts of which date back to 1485. Using a pickaxe to make planting holes and covering more of the Tarmac in paving, they developed a garden with a white and green theme. Today there are ferns, lichen-covered rocks – brought in from a local quarry to give the area shape – Japanese anemones, hostas with white-edged foliage and hydrangeas. Pots and pale berries on a sorbus add extra splashes of white, while pieces of rock, gathered during Peter’s work as a geologist, give a quirky feel. The mood changes as you move into the main part of the garden, past an original conifer hedge that has now been ‘tamed’. Formality is the theme for the initial area, with four square knot gardens around a central rose-covered arbour and a small rill pool. The beds are made with low hedges of box and red-leaved berberis,

each with a Rosa ‘Cecile Brunner’ at the centre. “It’s a perfect tea rose but the size of a 10p piece,” says Valerie. Gold-splashed ivy and Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ are gradually climbing up posts and along rope swags. “The idea is you are enclosed. The garden embraces you.” From here, things open out past a small patio and a bed of old-fashioned gallica and moss roses; these are pruned hard to allow the under-planting of hellebores to perform unrestricted early in the year. Beyond is lawn and a series of borders each with a different feel: one is home to a mass of asters; another is given over to cornus, a third to ferns, while red dominates another area with photinia, purple hazel, berberis and heuchera. Indeed, red is a recurring theme throughout the garden from dainty acers to the heart-shaped leaves of Cercis canadensis. “I think a garden zings to life with red in it,” she says. gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

Petal power Of the three original ponds only one is still water-filled, although the water is more or less obscured by a mass of aquatic planting. The others have been turned into bog gardens and planted with skunk cabbage, unusual sedges and primulas. More bog-lovers are found on the banks of the brook that runs along the garden’s boundary. Everywhere there are roses. Colours range from the honeyed tones of ‘Molineux’, ‘Buff Beauty’ and ‘Pat Austin’, through the pale pink of ‘New Dawn’ and ‘Queen of Sweden’ to the unusual ‘Summer Song’ with burnt orange blooms. Most were bought with money given to mark the wedding of Valerie and her second husband, Gareph, others were rescued from the throwout section of nurseries @WeekendGlos

or bought at plant sales. Although the garden is clearly important, Valerie insists she is not obsessive, allowing her young grandchildren to play freely. “It’s not a precious garden and I’d rather have the children here.” Above all, it’s a place to relax. “I garden like fury all winter,” she says. “I spend most of the summer sitting in it with a glass of wine because gardens are for enjoying not working.”

try this . . . If you don’t have the acid soil necessary to grow blue hydrangeas, cheat. A container filled with ericaceous soil and using a ‘hydrangea blueing compound’ will keep them happy. Just remember to keep them well-watered using rainwater in summer.

Mr Tyson, a barrister who spends his time between Cranham and London, said the property had had a major impact on their lives, after moving from an old vicarage near Badminton. He said: “We had an old family home

near Badminton where we’d move from room to room from the cold. We wanted a lighter, brighter and warmer place.” Cranham Lodge will be open to the public from 10am to 6pm on September 21. It is only open by appointment and is not suitable for children under 10. Call 01452 863034 to book a 30 min slot. Using your washing machine, dishwasher or taking a shower when the sun is shining and harvesting your daily meals from your own back yard are among lifestyle changes that homeowners are making. Talking in his passive solar conservatory, Mike Bush whose property on Charlton Drive in Charlton Kings will be open to the public over the weekend, said: “It’s an opportunity for people to see what’s possible. One thing is we can sit out here (in the conservatory) in the winter. There’s a lot of solar gain. You can use that to heat the rest of the house. Our planter provides salad leaves all year around and adds moisture inside. In the morning we go out into the garden and pick the fruit for our cereal.” Mr Bush will be running small tours

around his 1930s detached property from 10am to 4pm on September 20. His home also boasts triple glazing, solar PV and a backup system when there is a grid outage, a wood burning stove and LED lighting.

Cheltenham Green Doors’ open weekend, which is free, takes place on September 20 and 21. For more, visit cheltenhamgreendoors.org.uk.

A NEW book about Brian Jones seeks to tell the definitive story of the Cheltenham-born founder of the Rolling Stones. Respected music writer Paul Trynka has interviewed more than 100 people who knew Jones, including Keith Richards and Marianne Faithfull, to tell the musician’s story. The author describes Jones’ story as one of messy lives, unwanted children, ruthlessness

Has Anyone Seen Jessica Jenkins? Liz Kessler

Bloomsbury, £18.99

Ebury Press, £6.99

Fourth Estate, £18.99

Orion Children’s Books, £9.99

Eight years after Moral Disorder, Booker Prizewinning author Margaret Atwood has penned a new collection of short stories in Stone Mattress. Stories include a woman who comes face-to-face with a man who molested her 50 years ago, a fantasy novelist who is coming to terms with the death of her husband and an elderly lady getting to grips with Charles Bonnet syndrome. There is a sense of unease in her tales, but what makes them so engrossing is the skill involved in blending the present life and past flashbacks of the protagonists into one seamless narrative.

Britain notoriously likes a nice cup of tea and a biscuit, but most people have never given a thought to how that came about. The history of the growth in popularity of biscuits is charted through the stories of six women who worked at the Carr’s factory in Carlisle. Starting with Ivy, who was born in 1933, the lives of the “cracker packers” are unpacked, complete with their living conditions. Hunter Davies has an easy and involving style, which brings the personalities of the women to life. Fans of Who DoYou ThinkYou Are? will find this a fascinating account of ordinary lives lived.

Not the least achievement of We Are Not Ourselves, the distinguished debut from MatthewThomas, is that although it’s 640 pages long, it doesn’t feel like a long book. It’s the powerfully involving, down-to-earth account of the life of EileenTumulty, a Brooklyn-born war baby of Irish immigrants. Eileen’s childhood is tumultuous and colourful, with a much-admired father who’s the life and soul of the community and a strong mother who succumbs painfully to alcoholism and illness. Eileen wants more, and think she’s found it in charming scientist Ed Leary. But has she?

Young readers may already be familiar with Liz Kessler by way of her book series about Emily Windsnap. Her new character, Jessica Jenkins, is a girl who has the power of invisibility and controls this skill by wearing a special bracelet. She discovered her extraordinary ability during a boring geography lesson, which was so dull it made half her arm disappear. When her friend Max is kidnapped, Jessica and some of her other pals, who discover their own mysterious powers, have to use their skills to save him.The cheeky heroine uses her vanishing act in extremely creative ways.

PLAIN SAILING

Comedian Rory McGrath talks to Helen Blow about losing money at the racecourse and why his friend Griff Rhys Jones is as grumpy in real life as he is on screen

R

ORY McGrath’s memories of previous visits to Cheltenham are somewhat tainted by unsuccessful financial forays to Prestbury Park. “I have appeared in the Literature Festival three times and I get the chance to wander around the town; it’s a lovely place,” said the comedian and writer. “I’ve managed to lose quite a bit of money at the racecourse though, at the Gold Cup week,” he added, somewhat ruefully. He returns once again next week for an appearance at the Parabola Arts Centre with musician Philip Pope as part of the Hobgoblin Comedy Festival. “It’s mainly two blokes singing funny songs with some banter in between,” he said. “There’s some clean stuff and some puerile stuff. “I write the lyrics and the basic tune and then I hand it over to Phil, who’s a proper musician, who takes it away and rewrites it. “Expect wit, elegance and clever musical pastiche, but don’t worry, there’s also silliness and filth. Something to offend everybody.” When I heard I was going to interview Rory I admit I was a bit star-struck. I have always been a bit of a fan right from his early days on They Think It’s All Over to the hugely and unexpectedly successful Three Men In A Boat series alongside fellow funnymen Dara O’Briain and Griff Rhys Jones. You never quite know how celebrities are going to be in real life,

particularly when being interviewed by journalists. I really hoped he would be as affable and downto-earth as he comes over on the tellie and thank heavens I wasn’t disappointed. Rory comes from Cornwall and, despite his name (his full name is Patrick Rory McGrath), can’t recall any particular connections with Ireland. “I was named Patrick but it was because I was born on St Patrick’s Day and after my grandfather,” he said. “But my mother never liked it so she called me by my second name.” After a grammar school education, Rory went up to Cambridge to read modern languages and left with a somewhat inauspicious lower second (2:2 to us red brick types). “I was very immature and really just wanted to socialise, go drinking and have fun,” he said. “If I could get the chance to go again I would work really hard and get a first.” Another thing he did was to join the Cambridge Footlights and it was there he met fellow future comedian Jimmy Mulville, who he teamed up with afterwards to perform, and write for, among other shows, Not The Nine A’Clock News. “That’s where my association with Griff Rhys Jones began, back in 1978, and we remained friends ever since,” said Rory, who went on with Griff to become two of the Three Men In A Boat. The series spawned several others, each one a big hit both here and abroad, making its three protagonists

58

even bigger stars than they already were. “We were surprised by its success but we have had such fun making the series,” said Rory. “I couldn’t name my favourite because each one is so different and has been so enjoyable. “What you saw in those programmes was what actually happened and yes, Griff is often that grumpy in real life.” As well as down the Thames, the three have sailed and rowed in Scotland and Ireland, the Mediterranean and New England. “We would really like to make another series and I would like to suggest the Caribbean for the new location,” said Rory, with a smile. As well as his television work, Rory writes books – he’s working on his latest novel – writes and plays music and is a keen bird-watcher. As we ended our chat, I asked Rory something that I have been dying to know ever since Three Men In A Boat began eight years ago. “You’ve done a lot of sailing on very rough waters; do any of you ever get seasick?” At that Rory laughs. “We held a competition to see who would get sick first but actually it’s funny but none of us does,” he said. “But the sound and cameramen were heaving over the side quite a bit.” Rory McGrath and Philip Pope appear at the Parabola Arts Centre on Wednesday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £17.50 from 08445 762210. gloucestercitizen.co.uk/weekend gloucestershireecho.co.uk/weekend

comedy AL MURRAY, EVERYMAN THEATRE, CHELTENHAM THE comedian will serve up his five-star brew of buffoonery with his latest show, One Man, One Guvnor. It has been 20 years since Al embarked on his one-man mission as the King Cnut of Common Sense but it seems he hasn’t lost any of his passion for stand-up. “What I love is that it’s different every night,” he says. “I want the audience to feel that tonight’s the night, and unlike any other show. “They know that they are getting a 100 per cent effort from me, rather than feeling that it’s just another routine evening. “In a way I’m hugely envious of comedians who have the patience to do the same stuff every night but God knows how they do it – I’d go crazy. “It means much more to make every show unique. That’s what an audience brings to it.” Snap up your tickets before last orders – Al’s at the Everyman Theatre on Thursday and Friday at 7.30pm. For tickets, priced £29.50, call 01242 572573.

watch OUT FOR FRAMPTON COUNTRY FAIR

days out MADE IN THE COTSWOLDS FESTIVAL, CHIPPING CAMPDEN MORE than 30 talented Cotswold artists, craftspeople and creatives will both exhibit and demonstrate their work at venues across the small market town this weekend. There will also be a mini BITE food festival in the market hall celebrating the best food and drink across the region. Watercolours and acrylic artist Rosamund Young and advocate of fine art, Catherine Hope-Jones, with both take part in Open Studio events from 10.30am. The festival runs from today until tomorrow at venues across Chipping Campden. Elsewhere this weekend, don’t miss the first ever Broadway Food Festival. It takes place on the village green from 10am to 4pm tomorrow with chefs taking part in demonstrations and artisan producers selling a selection of their finest offerings.

THOUSANDS of people are expected to descend on the usually sleepy village of Frampton-on-Severn tomorrow. The renowned White Helmets motorycle team are set to prove the highlight of the event as they perform spectacular features of balance and acrobatics. The scale of this year’s event is a far cry from the very modest fixture that first took place in 1986. Back then a small group of country pursuit enthusiasts decided to put together a few displays and competitions. Little did they know that there would be so much keen interest in the country way of life and traditional country skills.

As a result, the fair has steadily grown and this year includes an aerobatic display by Simon Johnson, one of the UK’s top aerobatic pilots. In the main ring there will be plenty of activites with a falconry display, hound parade and dog agility demonstrations all planned. Those of you who like to shop won’t be disappointed either with almost 400 trade stands selling everything from Gloucestershire cheeses to dog and equestrian equipment. There will be country clothing retailers, leather goods, DIY tools and exotic plants too. Tickets cost £8 for adults and £3 for children. Call 01242 572573.

THE

final word COLUMNIST SALI GREEN

I

’VE touched on some tricky subjects in this column recently so today is going to be a light-hearted one if that’s ok with everyone. A round up of a few events in my neverseem-to-get-into-aroutine life. Last Saturday was Paolo’s 60th. He and his wife Suzi are friends of my mum and stepdad and they laid on a hearty party in deepest darkest Church End. Suzi’s home-made chicken liver parfait graced the canapés, along with warm chorizo, sushi, chicken samosas and quails’ eggs. Paolo was sporting a big golden medallion with 60 emblazoned on it in big orange letters and greeted his guests, who had travelled from near and far, with a big hug and kiss and a whiff of his Ralph Lauren Polo aftershave. During a quick wander of the house and garden I was able to capture some snaps of sights that caught my eye such as a ‘Grandchildren spoilt here’ sign and a row of nice quiet children on the sofa watching a film about singing chipmunks. Later on I was also able to photograph a man wearing pants, rowing a boat across their lake at speed to carry out a forfeit for losing at swingball. Suzi carefully prepared a Dark & Stormy (rum and ginger ale) and used real dry ice chemistry to ensure the drink, in a giant sized glass as big as a fish bowl, was pouring out smoky steam to everyone’s delight. We all had a try of this cocktail through ultra-long pink straws. Later on, and I wish I’d stayed long enough to witness this, Paolo did his ice bucket challenge wearing a pair of Speedos, and his medallion of course. On Sunday I did a lamb roast for Nanna and if I say so myself the potatoes and gravy turned out really well. I made incisions in the lamb where I inserted garlic cloves and sprigs of rosemary. Tash brought her cute little spaniel Millie to join us and Millie had an unfortunate accident in the hallway which Nanna then trod into the carpets. We managed to scrub it up suitably and Tash took Nanna’s slippers away for a thorough wash.

Later we had a spontaneous Chinese takeaway evening at Angelina’s with lashings of wine. In a continuing quest to replace son’s gaming with other pursuits, we have done the following things over recent days: watched The Simpsons and nature and history documentaries; been to visit a sailing club (associate family membership £31 a year – great value and they do homemade cakes on a Sunday afternoon); played chess; done a Lego stickers book; made a conker-based bath mixture (not sure this would pass health & safety standards), and been for a picnic at Pittville Park. We’ve also bid on a Simpsons’ chess set on eBay. I would love to tell you more but I’m over my 400 words limit so, until next week, wishing you a fabulous weekend. Sal x

my ideal

Would you stay in or go out to eat?

Without question, we’d go out. It always tastes better when someone else has done the cooking – and there’s no washing up! We’re spoilt for choice here in Cheltenham.

What’s in your fridge?

Fruit and cake – but not fruit cake – and lots of Champagne for us to celebrate our find . . . or perhaps Ben & Jerry’s ice cream if we weren’t so lucky.

WEEKEND...

If you could invite anyone to a dinner party, dead or alive, who would you invite?

SOPHIE CUDWORTH

My Nan, Violet. She passed away from cancer in 2006, when I was in my late teens. I idolised her as a child, but I would really liked to have known her as an adult. There would be so many things I would like to ask and show her. It was heartbreaking to see her succumb eventually to the illness, and charities like Maggie’s are a vital rock to help support the whole family when they are at their most vulnerable.

Describe your ideal weekend?

The Beards Diamond Rush takes place today with 10 real diamonds being hidden around Cheltenham. Buy your Diamond Rush treasure map from Beards, Maggie’s, Waitrose or Knight Frank now. To find out more, visit www.beards.co.uk/diamondrush and follow Beards jewellers onTwitter and Facebook. Get involved using the hashtag: #DiamondRush

Beards’ bespoke jewellery designer Taking part in the Beards Diamond Rush today. It’s going to be the most exciting event in Cheltenham, with people flocking to the streets to hunt out diamonds. My childhood hero was Indiana Jones, so omitting the snake pit, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a weekend.

Who would you spend it with?

My girlfriends definitely – as they say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. One is also a police officer, so she’d bring her top-secret detective skills and the other a jeweller, so would be able to help design something spectacular.

Where would you go?

Firstly we’d buy our Diamond Rush maps from Beards and plan our search over breakfast. We’d leave no stone unturned. With a little help from Maggie’s Clue Markers, purchasing clues from them for £5, we’d be sure to find one. After a full day hunting, we’d finish the day over cocktails.

What would you listen to?

We’d load up our iPods with the loudest and proudest motivational music including Eye Of TheTiger.

What are your favourite TV shows?

Anything narrated by David Attenborough but I’m also dying to see the next season of House of Cards.

Do you have a favourite author?

Absolutely! Douglas Adams – no author has made me laugh, ponder life and the universe in quite the same way.
