“Kingswood provides a range of challenging, motivating and enjoyable experiences in which children can set their own goals and feel they have achieved - Channelkirk Primary School
Inspired learning At Kingswood we offer a complete educational and adventure activity programme for young people to support and enhance their formal education; teaching them key life skills, helping them grow in confidence and encouraging their appetite for learning. 6
WHAT WE DO
WHO WE DO IT FOR FIND OUT MORE
Through stimulating environments, state-ofthe-art facilities and qualified instructors, we create valuable learning experiences that will never be forgotten. We believe in accelerated learning by doing – putting theory into practice and encouraging independence, self-awareness and teamwork.
SCHOOLS Working in partnership with leading educational organisations such as The University of the First Age (UFA) and ASDAN, at Kingswood we support learning outcomes by combining curriculum and outdoor learning. Using activity as a conduit to reach and raise academic attainment, we offer graduated levels of progression to ensure young people are continually challenged to try something new.
Our activities provide learning opportunities that stimulate young minds and work alongside the curriculum. Young people develop the PLTS they need to help them think independently, enhance their problemsolving skills, embrace challenges and develop a positive attitude towards life and change. The whole experience helps young people learn more about themselves, those around them and the world they live in and all within a fun and safe environment.
GROUPS We cater to a wide range of groups including sporting groups, youth groups and associations, charitable organisations, and uniformed, cultural and faith groups. We can tailor our activities to your group and offer exclusive use of the centre if required. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Kingswood can provide the ideal setting for international students because as well as benefiting from our outstanding education facilities, they can also embrace life in the UK through trips to iconic cities and improve their English with language tutors. CAMP BEAUMONT SUMMER CAMPS Camp Beaumont is for groups or individuals who want to experience all the fun and excitement of Kingswood in the holidays. Turn to page 80 to find out more.
There are lots of ways to find out more about our centres and programmes. FREE PREVIEW DAYS Free taster days at our centres are the perfect opportunity to sample the Kingswood experience, meet the staff and discuss your group's needs. See page 74 for dates (we’re flexible on these too – and we can even come to you). TASTER VISITS Before you decide on your programme or centre, we can bring a little piece of Kingswood to your school or group such as a Bushcraft or Arts and Culture taster. Q&A EVENINGS We’re more than happy to give parents a taster of Kingswood too, through a dedicated question and answer session held at your school or youth group. It’s a great way to set parents’ minds at rest about what can sometimes be their child’s first trip away from home. TRAINING DAYS You can use our centres for training and team building days for teachers, group leaders and support staff. Why not try a day away to get energised before the start of the school term? John Muir Award
NEW
A nationally recognised environmental award scheme that encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, enjoy and care for the environment and take personal responsibility for wild places in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.
Explore wild places
With a shared ‘learning by doing’ philosophy, the John Muir Award enhances Kingswood’s own ethos of learning outside the classroom and experiential education. Participants are encouraged to explore wild places, better understand and enjoy landscapes and nature, whilst encouraging them to take responsibility for the environment. Four Challenges, designed to encourage awareness, understanding and action, are at the heart of each John Muir Award. Participants engage with a range of activities to fulfil these four challenges: • Discover a wild place, on your doorstep or further afield • Explore and enjoy its wildness; take part in activities there • Conserve - take personal responsibility to improve your chosen wild place • Share experiences, celebrate achievements
36
The three levels to the Award allow students to show progression and gain a real sense of achievement, whilst also making a valuable contribution to a Record of Achievement. The John Muir Award can be used at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, supporting environmentbased programmes and field trips in a range of unique environments. Our staff can help you use the Award to make links between your school curriculum and the outdoor environment, add value to residential experiences, and enhance the many positives gained from learning in the outdoors.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOMES • Provides a framework for valuable outdoor learning experiences • Encourages a greater sense of responsibility for the natural world • Develops a better understanding of the environmental issues faced today • Teaches participants to collect, collate and understand data • Encourages investigative thinking • Develops self-confidence and presentation skills

Transition Module With a focus on fresh starts, better teamwork and new friendships, this programme helps young people as they prepare to make a transition in their learning journey.
Part of something new
Often it can be difficult for young people to integrate into a new class or year group, or to make friends when they move from a smaller primary school into a larger, more formal secondary school environment. Transition helps to combat this problem by familiarising young people with others within their peer group, encouraging lively interaction and helping a group to bond. These sessions can help to accelerate the ‘settling in’ period when starting a new school and, in turn, lead to a marked improvement in academic achievements. Transition can also help year groups to gain self-confidence, improve communication and develop key teambuilding skills. Transition programmes are tailored to suit your individual needs and structured around an exciting blend of adventure activities, problem solving and team challenges.

Finding Fin With his home under threat and Fin in need of somewhere new to live, can the participants identify the main processes affecting the river and help protect the future of their fishy friend?
Hands-on habitats
Combining environmental study, geography and computing, this practical river study sees participants visit a local river to observe, identify and measure the main processes affecting the river. By taking measurements of width, depth and velocity at contrasting sites along the river’s course, participants undertake an evaluation of the situation. Using nets and identification keys, they are able to investigate what is living in the river and determine whether or not the water is polluted. Can the participants find out whether the river will be a suitable place for Fin to live? What sort of new friends will he make, what will he eat and where will he play? During a follow-up session in the computer lab, participants devise a poster to show the areas of the river most suitable for Fin to enjoy life with his new friends.

Building a winning CV
A fantastic hands-on experience for young people in years 10 and 11, the course combines Kingswood’s adventure activities with instruction on health and safety, risk assessments and the running of a young persons' residential centre, keeping track of their progress using a specially designed log book.
This qualification counts as part credit towards ASDAN’s CoPE and participants can complete their certificate at school following their Kingswood visit. CoPE is a GCSE equivalent qualification at levels 1 and 2, with level 2 corresponding to a grade B.
All activities are exciting and challenging and every Kingswood session forms an integral part of the overall module, focusing on specific skills and allowing participants to gain maximum benefit. Participants leave with an AKRAA certificate demonstrating successful completion of the course.
Successful completion of the course shows that participants have the ability to calculate risk, make decisions, lead groups and work as part of a team. It’s a great way for vocationally focussed participants to add to their CV and for the more academic to demonstrate a broader range of skills. We also provide a version of our ASDAN Module that supports the values of 'cooperation' allowing students to explore the ethos of the Schools Cooperative Society.

Drum Beat
Junk
Young people learn about basic beats, working in groups to create their own rhythmic masterpiece whilst developing their team building, communication and problem solving skills along the way.
Young people express themselves through dance and music on the theme of recycling, improving their teamwork – co-ordination and communication skills along the way.
THE TASK
THE TASK
Participants receive a basic introduction to rhythm and dynamics, trying their skills on drums and other percussion instruments. They then choose their favourite instrument and learn a group performance piece. This gives them enough knowledge to either adapt the piece or create their own original composition for the final show.
Working through three sessions, participants learn why recycling is so important for our world. They work in groups to learn different rhythms before creating their own beats and using recycled rubbish as musical instruments.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOME
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOME
By the end of the sessions participants will have the confidence to play simple beats on percussion instruments, keeping time and understanding the relevant music theory.
Participants develop the confidence to express and test themselves in a variety of ways using music and movement. They’ll also have the ability to play around with and develop beats from a simple rhythmic base.

Mask Making
Young people work in teams to create, rehearse and perform a radio play. To ensure a successful production they must use communication, teamwork and imagination as well as making the best use of each group member’s strengths.
An engaging introduction to environmental art. Young people learn about the genre, develop their knowledge of natural resources used and gain an understanding of the colour wheel and other design principles.
Young people will enjoy getting ‘hands on’ as they make masks moulded from the faces of the group. They’ll also learn about the importance of masks in different cultures, both in the past and present.
THE TASK
THE TASK
THE TASK
Each group is given five random objects from a box of props. They must then write the script for a radio play lasting around five minutes that includes the five props. Every member of the team must have a role to play, either as a character or operating a prop.
The session begins with participants looking at examples of environmental art and learning about some wellknown artists. After discussing different art forms, they look at the potential resources available with sustainability in mind. This gives them the knowledge to create their own sculptural piece or design.
Participants use ‘ModRoc’ to make masks of their faces, working in pairs or groups of three. If there’s time, hands or feet can also be done. After a minimum 24 hour drying time, they will decorate their masks before discussing how masks are used within other cultures.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOME

Personal Development - University of the First Age Module
Helping young people to develop and grow; challenging their ideas and teaching new skills that inspire them to go on to achieve great success in everything that they do. Working alongside The University of the First Age (UFA), we have designed a module to help young people develop as learners; equipping them with a range of lifeskills and competencies that will lead to greater academic success and their development as well-rounded, responsible citizens of the future. Sitting alongside a traditional Kingswood programme (with additional one hour sessions to allow supporting tasks to be completed), UFA modules help demonstrate to students a deeper understanding of the chosen topic, by teaching the importance of working together, listening and empathising with others and challenging their own preconceived ideas and beliefs.
62
Each of the sessions can be facilitated by teaching staff, although UFA trained Kingswood staff are provided if required.
ABOUT UFA UFA is a national educational charity that strives to create transformational learning experiences for young people all around the world, regardless of their background, ability or faith. With challenging programmes that aim to unlock hidden potential, the courses equip young people with the confidence, skills and motivation to learn, lead and achieve success, both at school and throughout their chosen careers. At Kingswood we believe strongly in creating an Outside the Classroom experience that not only engages and excites young minds, but also inspires them to make a difference in the world and achieve their best.

Helping young people to reflect on their recent growth and learning. By creating a photo montage using images taken and collated on a free period each day throughout the week, each participant is able to express their own personal learning journey through 'My Kingswood Story’; a piece of unique artwork that captures all that they have achieved during their time at the centre. Being able to demonstrate their progress in this way also allows young people to reflect on their personal growth and learning, with particular emphasis on trust in themselves, their own judgement and in others. The information, thoughts and photos are collated each day during a teacherled meal time/free period and the montages are then presented in two sessions on the final day of the course. A post course follow up is recommended so that young people can reflect on how all they have learned can be successfully transferred into everyday lives.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOMES • Builds self-belief and confidence • Encourages reflection on their personal growth and learning • Teaches importance of trust • Encourages empathy and resilience • Supports development of creative thinking

I Can be a Leader
Learning to lead, listen and work well as a team. Participating in a minimum of three sessions such as climbing, high ropes, low ropes, problem solving, orienteering, Bushcraft, nightline, team tech, raft building and canoeing – young people will gain a better understanding of what it takes to be both an inspiring leader and a good team player, regardless of the difficult challenges they face or the unusual situations they may find themselves in. By designing an action plan during the course of the week (with help from teachers and, if necessary, Kingswood staff), young people will be able to continue their learning journey upon returning home, developing important leadership skills to use both at school, in their group or in the community.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOMES • Teaches leadership, compromise and the art of negotiation • Promotes self-belief and the importance of taking personal responsibility • Demonstrates the valuable role each student plays in a team
KS2 KS3 KS4 KS5 P4-7 S1-6
I CAN Make a Difference Learning to debate, resolve and stand up for beliefs. Designed as an effective team building exercise, this session – which fits in well with the School Councils programme – requires young people to work closely alongside their peers to investigate and debate a range of current national and global issues. By honing and developing their negotiation skills, they will not only gain a far better understanding of the importance of compromise and conflict resolution, they will also be given an invaluable insight into what they are (and are not) responsible for within their local communities.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOMES • Teaches the importance of expressing beliefs through a healthy debate • Develops essential lifeskills for participation in community groups • Enables a greater understanding of national and global issues

Leading & Learning in Teams
Learning teamwork, resilience and effective communication.
By gaining a greater awareness of emotional intelligence and ‘self talk’ to develop resilience, participants are better able to understand the benefits of working together as a team – something that can be recapped in sessions run by teachers during free time.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOMES • Develops important leadership, communication and life skills • Promotes self-belief and the awareness of emotional intelligence • Encourages bonding, teamwork and long term friendships
OUR MODULES
Run either as a stand-alone module or as two sessions with progressive programming targeted to develop skills, (eg. low/high ropes, orienteering, Bushcraft, team tech, raft building and a problemsolving challenge). This course exposes young people to time-limited physical and mental challenges that aim to boost confidence and improve communication and management skills.
KS2 KS3 KS4 KS5 P4-7 S1-6
Life: It’s a Risky Business
Learning to role play, make decisions and face challenging risks.
Having discussed and identified risk perception and consequences in relation to a variety of controlled and uncontrolled situations, participants design and develop their own interactive game, to involve a variety of challenging activities such as zip wire, Leap of Faith, climbing, high ropes and raft building. By taking students out of their comfort zones and asking them to role play a series of dilemmas, they are better able to identify and further explore the concept of risk, as well as develop a number of important skills such as reasoning, negotiation and decision making.
SESSION LEARNING OUTCOMES • Develops a greater confidence in considered risk taking • Teaches important reasoning, decision making and role playing skills • Encourages teambuilding and problem solving

multimedia elements, including activity books and interactive software. Learning comes to life as students cover engaging topics such as fashion, music, local cities and news reporting – designing a magazine and debating a court case whilst building confidence in their growing language ability.
We don’t just offer classroom or language lab lessons – instead we support learning with excursions, a varied learning programme and a mix of exciting adventure activity sessions.
A relaxed learning environment
Much more than a language school, at Kingswood we believe in enriching the classroom experience with a pioneering mix of learning methods that give international participants the chance to use their language skills in real situations.
Our interactive approach

We assess participants' ability on arrival and place them into groups, matching their skills and experience. This takes the stress out of learning and gives each child the chance to learn at their own pace. Our instructors ensure that participants enjoy and benefit from their course, presenting interesting topics, monitoring pupils’ learning and offering encouragement along the way.
A multi-cultural mix
Groups from all around the world visit Kingswood at the same time as those from Britain, providing an excellent opportunity for groups to mix with and learn from each other. When they’re not engaged in language sessions, participants are encouraged to practice their skills during our outdoor activities and on excursions with our fully qualified, English staff. If you feel your group might benefit from our English language learning experience, please call +44 1603 309 307 and speak to our team about the right options for you.

Q: Will children need pocket money? A: All children’s needs are catered for, but every Kingswood centre does have a shop where children can by postcards, limited refreshments, souvenirs etc so we recommend bringing £15-20 with them. Q: What are your accommodation arrangements like? A: Boys and girls sleep in bunk beds in separate rooms in warm, comfortable dormitories of between 2 and 16. Sheets, duvets and pillows are provided. Some rooms are en-suite, but there are always separate toilet and shower facilities for girls and boys close to dormitories. Q: When is bedtime? A: Our Evening Activities typically end around 9pm when students enjoy a hot chocolate before returning to their dorms. We suggest a lights-out policy of 10pm, but this may vary depending upon the age of the group and their teachers’ preferences. Q: Will my child cope? A: All Kingswood staff are trained to take responsibility for the wellbeing of the children who are in their care. We have found that the best way to help children cope with being away from home is to keep them busy, having fun from dawn ‘til dusk. As such, we create a warm, supportive environment for students so they quickly feel at home. Our
activities are progressive, allowing students to join in at whatever level they’re comfortable with. For obvious reasons some activities are age restricted and/or subject to the correct fitting of equipment. Q: What does my child need to bring? A: Old clothes! Clothing and shoes worn outside during activities will inevitably get dirty. We try to help children look after their things but items do get lost or left behind, so we recommend all items are named and students are given a packing list so they can tick things off as they pack them at the end of their stay. Here’s a sample packing list they can use: • 1 swimming towel and costume (where the centre has watersport sessions) • 1 bath towel • toiletries bag including toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hairbrush etc. • night clothes • socks and underwear • 4 t-shirts, shirt or blouses (at least 1 with long sleeves) and a sweatshirt (2 in winter) • 1 thick jumper (2 in winter) and 1 light sweater • 3 pairs of trousers and/or jeans and/or tracksuit bottoms • clothes for the evening activities • waterproof jacket (trousers if possible) • sturdy shoes and wellies, even in summer • 2 pairs of trainers, including one old pair • large plastic bag for dirty clothes
• gloves, hat and scarf in winter • drinking water bottle Please note, many of our activities require arms and legs to be covered. Q: What should my child not bring to Kingswood? A: Mobile phones, expensive cameras, electronic games, iPods or mp3 players, expensive or much-cherished jewellery, expensive or favourite clothing or shoes – these items aren’t covered by our insurance. Q: What should parents do regarding illness? A: We ask parents to be vigilant before their child’s trip to Kingswood. If their child shows symptoms of illness they should inform their teacher or trip leader who can contact us directly for information. Q. How do I contact my child? A. Arrangements for you to contact your child in the event of an emergency should be made with the visit organiser. Q. What’s the food like? A. All our centres offer freshly prepared meals and varied menus with a number of choices each day. Please let us know about any special dietary requirements before arrival.

Parents Q&As
Teacher & Group Leader Q&As Q: What experience does Kingswood have in working with schools? A: Kingswood has been delivering high quality residential education programmes to schools for over three decades. Our teams currently reach over 130,000 young people from around 3,500 schools every year. All instruction is given by our team of professionally qualified outdoor educators, supported by a strong centre management team. We constantly review our programmes so we can quickly respond to the changing educational needs of schools and their students.
78
Q: How up-to-date are your programmes? A: Kingswood’s name is synonymous with innovative, state-of-the-art educational activity centres. Our Education Team work closely with consultants and teachers to ensure the powerful educational benefits of our courses meet the needs of school groups, and we use the very latest equipment and methodologies. Kingswood’s programmes are recognised as the best available to schools, specifically designed to help students increase their level of attainment, learning more about their own abilities as they explore working with others.
Q: Why is a residential school visit so important to my class? A: In addition to meeting outcomes related to the National and School Curriculums, a visit to Kingswood gives young people a brand new opportunity to learn in an environment that is exciting, challenging and fun. Students have the chance to expand their horizons and build their confidence and independence by trying new adventure and educational activities in a safe, secure setting. The Kingswood experience promotes team building and often brings a class and its teacher together, supporting interactive and project-based learning back in school.
Q: Will our school mix with other schools? A: Our centres usually have several schools staying at any one time, but classmates stay together throughout the day. The only time groups can meet is in the evenings as part of evening activities unless participating in the Interaction module. Students from different schools never share the same dorms. Q: What is included in the price? A: Your booking fee covers a fully supervised centre-based programme of educational courses, as well as adventure activities, evening entertainment, comfortable accommodation, good, healthy meals and free places for a teacher/pupil ratio of 1:10. The booking price does not include transport to and from the centre, or between the centre and off-site field study locations. Q: How secure are the centres? A: Security is paramount to Kingswood. Every centre keeps clearly defined borders with perimeter fencing, night patrols and electronic gates where needed. We maintain the highest security standards at all times and all visitors wear name badges when on site. Q: Do you have fire drills? A: All schools receive a fire safety briefing on arrival at the centre. Groups are shown where the emergency exits and meeting areas are and we go through evacuation procedures. This is followed by an emergency fire drill involving all visitors. Q: What about dates and prices? A: Because a visit to Kingswood is tailored to suit the individual needs of each school, your quote will be based upon the programme that has been devised specifically for you. Our support team will be happy to give you details of available dates along with our prices. Just call them on 0800 655 6564.
Q: What is your payment process? A: Once you’ve reserved your dates you’ll have 28 days before you need to pay your first deposit. This gives you a chance to launch your trip to parents and students. Visit www.kingswood.co.uk to download savings cards. You can give these out to parents so they can set aside a small amount of money each week in the run up to your visit. Q: What care is available during the night? A: Teachers sleep separately to students but are never too far away. Every centre has a Duty Manager on call throughout the night. Q: What are the special safety provisions for watersports? A: We hold Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) licences for our watersports activities at Peak Venture and Isle of Wight. The watersports available at Colomendy don’t fall under the licensing regulations, but are still governed by the ‘Adventure Mark’ award and the centre holds the ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ Quality Badge. Q: What’s the food like? A: Our new breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are all created with health in mind to boost energy and meet government recommendations on school nutrition. Menus vary day-to-day according to the season, but there is always a choice of hot and cold dishes, vegetarian options and fresh salad bars, with meals served in communal dining areas. We’re happy to cater for special religious or dietary requirements as long as you tell us about these before you arrive. For groups with specific dietary requirements a supplement may apply. Q: What about pupils with special needs? A: Kingswood is committed to an inclusive approach and values the involvement of all young people. We can support special needs students with many of their requirements as long as teachers make us aware of them at the time of booking. We’re happy to provide extra support to those who are used to taking part in activities with the rest of their classmates – but if we think it won’t prove a positive experience for them, that it might prove overwhelming, or that we’re not equipped to cope with a specific situation, we’ll let you know. If you’d like to talk to our dedicated Special Needs Co-ordinator, you can reach them on 0800 655 6564.
Q: Do you have first aid cover? A: Yes. There are qualified first aid staff on site at all times. Q: Can you help promote the trip to parents? A: Of course. We have parent leaflets and savings cards available at www.kingswood. co.uk so you can download and distribute these as required. If you haven’t been to Kingswood before, we’ll be happy to visit your school to host a Parents’ Evening where we’ll give a presentation about the benefits of coming to our centres and answer any questions parents might have. If you have been to us before, we’ll let you launch your trip – after all, who better to explain the benefits than teachers who have already experienced them first hand? Q: Do pupils need any specialist clothing? A: No, but bearing in mind the great British climate, suitable wet weather gear and waterproof footwear are often an absolute must! If you’re not sure what students need to bring, there’s a sample packing list at www.kingswood.co.uk. Q: I’ve heard Kingswood is part of a wider group? A: Kingswood is part of Education Travel Group, the UK’s leading supplier of educational group tours, school ski courses and educationally-rich UK activity centre breaks for schools. Our sister companies within the Group cover almost every type of trip a school could require, from ski trips with SkiPlan, worldwide study tours with Equity Travel and sports tours with Pavilion. This gives teachers the opportunity to book a wide range of school trips with one trusted provider. Q: How does Kingswood protect payments made before a school’s visit? A: All companies within the Education Travel Group, which includes Kingswood and STG, are bonded or insured by ABTA, ATOL or other insurance providers where required for school trips. We meet all the relevant obligations of the Package Travel Regulations 1992.
