They’ll also learn about the importance of masks in different cultures, both in the past and present. The task Participants use ‘ModRoc’ to make masks of their faces, working in pairs or groups of three. If there’s time, hands or feet can also be done. After a minimum 24-hour drying time, they will decorate their masks before discussing how masks are used within other cultures.
Session learning outcomes On completion of the sessions, each participant will have made and decorated their own mask and will have learned where masks come from, how they can be produced and how they’re used across the world.

Rouen
From the famous clocks, cathedrals and churches, to the quaint streets and delicious macaroons, students can enjoy a guided tour from our experienced Château guide, exploring the rich history, culture and exceptional architectural heritage that Rouen – the capital of Upper Normandy, has to offer. Rich in history
Once the second largest city and affectionately referred to as ‘little Paris’, Rouen offers students many fascinating places to discover and explore. Our tour includes a visit to the Aître Saint-Maclou, a plague-era ossuary that housed the remains of the dead, and the Place du Vieux-Marché where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake. The modern church of Saint Joan of Arc – designed to represent the pyre on which she went to her death, always proves to be of particular interest to students.
Spectacular architecture
Despite suffering excessive damage during World War II, the city still boasts an exceptional range of architectural styles. Our guided tour takes in the quaint streets full of beautiful half-timbered houses, the incredible Cathédrale Notre Dame – made famous by Monet’s Cathedral series, St. Ouen’s Abbey, the gothic Church of Saint-Maclou and the unique Gros-Horloge, an astronomical clock dating back to 1389.
Traditional market culture
Rouen has plenty to offer in the way of charming shops and open markets. With its safe, pedestrianised streets throughout the city centre, students are free to explore, practising their French on the friendly and accommodating shopkeepers while sampling some of Rouen’s delicious macaroon biscuits!

Poor intelligence and last minute changes to the plan caused the Allies to suffer great losses, but taught them valuable lessons they would put into practice in future beach invasions.

Every Saturday Dieppe’s narrow streets come alive with stalls packed full of classic French fare – local cheeses, home-cooked tarte aux pommes, slithering escargot and the fishermen’s daily catches displayed on beds of ice. Our people At Kingswood we’re passionate about providing the best possible educational adventure. Our Château guides are trained to offer a truly enriching and immersive experience, making sure each student is interested and engaged and getting the most out of every trip. Inspirational leadership
Kingswood’s Château guides build up a great rapport with their students. They are always ready to offer support, encouragement and a friendly smile. They are all trained to lead groups through a wide programme of cultural, historical and linguistic excursions, supported by workbook materials for a more interactive experience.
Igniting a passion for learning
Armed with language skills and an extensive knowledge of the local area, all our Château guides are experienced at passing on their energy and enthusiasm to students, gently encouraging less confident children and guiding those who work well under their own initiative. Their passion and love for what they teach sparks the students’ interest, engaging them with the subject matter and helping them to get the most out of their studies.
Making your job easier
Our Château guides will take the lead on all off-site visits, helping to inspire your students and create a deeper connection to their listening, speaking and language skills – something that will in turn motivate them and make them easier to teach. With the Château guide leading the way, you are free to focus your attention on the individual needs of your group.
An unforgettable experience
School trips play an important role in every student’s education, providing that first taste of independence away from home. They are the ultimate ‘Learning Outside of the Classroom’ experience and offer a chance to explore different countries and cultures, develop new skills and build confidence and self-esteem.
A visit to Kingswood France offers all of this, with the added benefit of the unique personal touches offered by our friendly Château guides.

Safety and peace of mind “An international environment with excellent support staff and activities” - Lisa Mahler, France
Allowing young people the freedom to push the boundaries, try new experiences and find out just how much they’re capable of achieving – all under expert guidance and supervision and within a safe, secure environment is something we strive hard to achieve at Kingswood. Off-site safety
Strict policies are in place for the operation of all visits and excursions. Our excursion sites are regularly used and are well-known to our Château guides. Our operating procedures cover everything from boarding a coach to crossing a road, student supervision ratios, clothing requirements, instructor training requirements and systems for remote supervision. All of our experienced instructors receive comprehensive first aid training. They provide thorough safety briefings to students before they depart from the Château, and are trained to conduct dynamic risk assessments throughout the day to respond to changing environmental conditions. They have access to a first aid kit and mobile phone at all times. Senior staff members conduct regular audits of our study programmes to confirm that our high standards are being maintained, and we consult with experienced teaching and health and safety experts to ensure that our procedures stay in line with current best practice.
Risk assessments
Comprehensive risk assessments are conducted for our excursion programmes and all the venues we use are vetted by a senior staff member for their suitability before first use. Copies of risk assessments can be downloaded from www.kingswood. co.uk/health-and-safety.
On-site care
The Château provides a safe and fully secure environment, complete with boundary fencing, coded entry and Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosures on all staff. Students stay in well-equipped, comfortable singlesex dormitories (with separate shower and toilet facilities) within easy walking distance of all main areas. Nearby teacher rooms allow for easy student supervision at all times and a Duty Manager and First Aider are on call 24/7.
Meeting external standards
All Kingswood centres are inspected and accredited by the British Activity Holidays Association and hold the ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ Quality Badge and the Adventuremark Award for safety in activity and learning provision.

Your Q&As Q: Can I talk to someone about study requirements before I visit? A: We’ll call you a few weeks before your visit to plan out your itinerary, but you can contact us at any time if you have questions or concerns. Don’t forget, you can also find more information at www.kingswood.co.uk.
Q: What do students do in the evenings? A: After dinner we have evening activities – a programme of fun group games and cool ways to unwind. Students are encouraged to socialise through activities including a Disco, Mini Olympics, Scrapheap Challenge and other exciting activities.
Q: Do students from different schools mix? A: Classmates share the same dorms and stay together throughout the day. However, students may have the chance to meet and make new friends from other schools during the evening activities.
Q: Can I visit the Château in advance of our stay? A: We regularly run free preview weekends for teachers, so just let us know if you’d like to visit and we’ll be pleased to make the arrangements. We’ll give you a full tour of the site and facilities so you can get a good feel of what to expect from your school’s visit.
Q: Who will be my point of contact during my stay? A: Each school is assigned a Group Leader who will greet them and be present to support throughout your stay.
Q: What travel documentation do students need? A: The teacher organising the trip will hold on to the group’s travel insurance documents so all the students will need to bring is their passports.
Q: Do I need to bring any specialist equipment or clothing? A: No – we have a comprehensive inventory of equipment for all our activities. The launch pack we send you contains a full list of suggested clothing, none of which are out of the ordinary.

Q: What is your payment process? A: Once you’ve reserved the dates, you’ll need to pay the first, non-refundable deposit within 8 weeks. The second deposit is due 16 weeks after booking, with the third and final payment due eight weeks before arrival.
Q: Will students need additional pocket money? A: All students’ on-site needs are catered for. During excursions students may get the chance to go shopping or visit gift shops. We’d suggest students bring spending money of no more than 20–25 Euros each.
Q: What is included in the total cost? A: In a word, everything! Coach travel from your school to the Château is included in the price, as is comprehensive travel insurance for your group. All excursions are included (except for our overnight excursions), with workbooks relating to each excursion, plus full use of our computing facilities for ‘Reportage’ participants. And of course, your booking fee covers a fully-supervised programme of adventure activities, evening entertainment, accommodation, healthy meals and free places for one teacher for every eight pupils. Q: Can you arrange insurance? A: You don’t need to make any additional arrangements – to make life easier for you Group Travel Insurance is included in the booking for Château visitors. This covers students and their party leaders from the moment you leave school until your return. Please check our terms and condition for details.
Q: What about students with special needs? A: We can accommodate most needs, but we do ask that you let us know at the time of booking so that we can advise you on whether we are equipped to deal with specific situations. Q: What is the food like? A: All our meals are created with health and nutrition in mind. Menus vary from day-to-day according to the season and the individual centre. Guests eat in the communal dining room, with four course evening meals and vegetarian selections. We can also cater for students with special religious or dietary needs if you let us know in advance. Students who are off-site at lunchtime will be given a packed lunch, including filled baguettes, fruit, biscuits, crisps and a drink.
Q: How secure is the centre? A: Dormitory door security codes restrict access to your group. Dorm windows are secure and a switchboard in the teachers’ room informs you whether the lights are on in your students’ quarters. Q: Do you have fire drills? A: Upon arriving at the Château, all schools receive a fire safety briefing where we point out the emergency exits and meeting areas and rehearse our evacuation procedure. We then carry out an emergency fire drill involving everyone on site – students, teachers and staff. Q: Do you have first aid cover? A: We have fully qualified first aid staff on site at all times. In the event of a more serious accident we are a 10 minute drive to the nearest hospital.
Q: What care is available during the night? A: Teachers sleep just down the corridor from their pupils and there is also a Duty Manager on call throughout the night.
