A viral infection caused her to go into cardiogenic shock and her heart stopped pumping. Doctors inserted a heart pump that took over for the muscles in her heart. The pump remained in place for five days, giving her heart time to rest so that it could recover and beat again on its own. “Desert Springs Hospital is second to none. No one gave up on me. Doctors identified what was wrong with me quickly; nurses sat with me all night to make sure I was all right; therapists helped me learn to walk and talk again; even the housekeeping staff made sure I was comfortable.” Today, Shaunda’s heart is operating normally and she is back to doing the things she loves most … especially spending time with her family.
