on the scene WITH BROCK RADKE

Gwen Stefani

Singer dishes on Vegas residency Gwen Stefani came out of the gate strong when opening her Las Vegas residency Just A Girl at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort this summer, learning the ropes of an all-new production very quickly through a dozen initial performances. “I had so much fun,” says the pop fashion icon. “Every night is different because each crowd is so unique, so the entire residency has been a learning experience so far. This show is different from anything else I’ve ever done before in my career.” From her days fronting punky faves No Doubt to establishing her own genre-spanning solo career, Stefani has plenty of musical ammunition to share as she returns to the Zappos Theater stage this week, Dec. 30-31. Your Vegas show is a massive, sensory experience. Do you have favorite parts? My favorite part is getting to know the audience each night. I love interacting with them throughout the show. It is different every night, and I love that. The show is a bit more theatrical than anything I’ve ever done and I have more freedom to do things I couldn’t do on tour, which has been exciting. You’ve talked about how you never imagined doing a show like this on the Strip and joining so many other headlining stars. Now that you’re part of the club, do you have a different perspective on playing Vegas? Having a Vegas residency is one of those lifetime achievements that I couldn’t even think up, and it’s such an honor. It’s taken my whole career to build a story like the one I put on in Vegas, and it’s a new way for me to be creative. This show is not like anything I’ve ever done before, which has been so rewarding. You just released a deluxe version of You Make It Feel Like Christmas. What are your holiday plans this year? I’m looking forward to spending

12 12.30.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

time with family and creating new and special memories with my children. Our family is big on traditions and we all really look forward to this time of year. There’s just something so fun about the holiday time and it’s such a great time to reflect on the year and dream about what’s to come in the new year. That holiday album has a pretty special duet on the track list, too. I’m a huge fan of Christmas music and I had so much fun making a Christmas album, especially getting the chance to write a song with my best friend, Blake Shelton. Do you think your Vegas experience will influence your music going forward? Having a residency has been such an amazing experience. I’ve been able to be creative in a whole new way, so it has definitely sparked some new inspiration. This is such a fun chapter of my life. I’m reliving a lot of memories and creating new ones at the same time. I’m inspired.

New Year, New Hits Multiplatinum hitmakers Maroon 5 will be performing at halftime during Super Bowl LII in Atlanta on Feb. 3, and the group couldn’t find a better tune-up gig than New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas. For the fifth time in six years, the three-time Grammy-winning outfit will headline Mandalay Bay Events Center to ring in the new year, per-

forming Dec. 30-31 at the south Strip megaresort. Maroon 5 has been back on the road since September, cruising through the second leg of its Red Pill Blues tour with opener Julia Michaels to support its sixth studio album and recent hits “What Lovers Do,” “Wait” and “Girls Like You.” Next up in 2019: Australia, Asia and Europe.

Home for the Holidays Jazz vocalist extraordinaire Clint Holmes left a big mark on the pop charts in 1973 with his thenubiquitous hit “Playground in My Mind.” Last year, his name was in lights again when his beautifully crafted album Rendezvous earned two Grammy Award nominations. But no matter how he’s remembered or recognized outside of Las Vegas, Holmes remains one of the most beloved singers in the entertainment capital of the world, constantly making the rounds at venues large and small and creating memorable musical experiences. This year he took the stage at the Westgate International Theater with Earl Turner in Soundtrack and recently wrapped his annual holiday performances at The Smith Center, and he’ll tie up 2018 with a New Year’s Eve show at Sam’s Town.

Jonathan Scott , one half of the popular Property Brothers duo, attended Mat Franco: Magic Reinvented Nightly at The Linq and went backstage after the show. Tropicana comic magician Murray Sawchuck celebrated a million subscribers (and more than a billion views) on his YouTube channel just before Christmas with a party at beloved Chinatown bar the Golden Tiki. Murray’s producing partner Seth Leach was there along with Pia Zadora, Tape Face, members of the Tenors of Rock, Paul Shortino, members of the Crazy Girls, Douglas “Lefty” Leferovich and many more friends. You may have seen that Florida Georgia Line’s recent run at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort culminated in Mayor Carolyn Goodman proclaiming Dec. 11 as Florida Georgia Line Day in Las Vegas. What you might have missed is that the pop country duo’s five shows sold so well, the theater opened up balcony seating to accommodate more fans, something that hasn’t even happened for the resident headliners. Don’t be surprised if FGL returns to the Strip soon. In the continuing saga of esports in Sin City, Topgolf and fast-growing TV brand TCL have announced a national partnership that will create the first TCL Esports Lounge in the country at Topgolf Las Vegas behind MGM Grand in January, just in time for the annual Consumer Electronics Show. The lounge will combine the traditional sports viewing area with daily esports play, special events, coaching sessions, viewing parties and more.

Bruno Mars and Boyz II Men team up for two epic concerts Bruno Mars and New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas go together like neon and signs, with Mars’ luminescent presence having graced the stage at Park Theater the previous two years as part of his Park MGM residency. Boyz II Men have been on the scene as a groundbreaking vocal force since introducing their hip-hop doo-wop vocal blend to mass audiences in 1991 with Cooleyhighharmony, and had the first R&B residency in Las Vegas when they began playing The Mirage regularly in 2013. The two acts have joined forces to welcome 2019 with an arena-sized party that’s destined to be unforgettable. Boyz II Men were one of the acts that replaced new mom Cardi B as the opener for the final leg of Mars’ 24K Magic World Tour, which began March 28, 2017, in Belgium. Much of Mars’ set comes from his Grammy-winning third studio album, 2016’s 24K Magic, not only demonstrating his confidence in his latest material but celebrating the ’80s and ’90s sounds he grew up

with as created by producers such as Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Teddy Riley. Babyface wound up helping Mars “crack the code” when he had difficulty writing album closer “Too Good to Say Goodbye,” while New Jack Swing’s influence is clearly evident in “Finesse.” Mars’ 14th top five single, featuring Cardi B in a remixed version of the album track, pays tribute to “Poison,” the title track and first single from Bell Biv DeVoe’s 1990 debut album, which came in the wake of fellow New Edition alumnus Bobby Brown’s success with producer Riley’s pioneering sound. A year before “Poison” was released and became a smash hit, an unknown Philadelphia vocal group approached BBD’s Michael Bivins at a concert and asked for an impromptu audition. Their name was inspired by New Edition song “Boys to Men.” Bivins, who was planning on a future as a talent developer and producer, helped

make Boyz II Men into stars only a year after the success of BBD. Boyz II Men became bigger than Bivins’ trio, epitomizing the era with hits such as “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye” and “End of the Road.” The latter song, co-written and produced by Babyface, went to No. 1 in 1992 and stayed there for a record-breaking 13 weeks. Two years later, “I’ll Make Love to You” spent 14 weeks at No. 1, only to be replaced by “On Bended Knee,” making Boyz II Men the third act in history to replace itself at No. 1 after Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Mars is no stranger to the charts, of course, having seven No. 1 hits himself. Those hits are showcases of ’80s synth patches and drummachine rhythms, with Mars showing nothing but reverence to the music he loved when he was a boy Elvis impersonator in Hawaii. With Mars and Boyz II Men inspiring each other on the most celebratory night of the year, there will be no shortage of onstage magic. –Matt Kelemen

Rock On! Lita Ford’s connections are the stuff of legend. The singer/guitarist was all of 16 when she joined the groundbreaking 1970s all-female rock band The Runaways (whose roster also included a young Joan Jett). As a solo artist, she worked with and was once engaged to Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi. Her biggest U.S. hit—“Close My Eyes

18 12.30.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

Forever”—was a duet with another Black Sabbath legend, Ozzy Osbourne. She’s written with Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx. And 2016’s Time Capsule is a collection of songs Ford recorded in her 1980s heyday with such rock luminaries as Gene Simmons from KISS and Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick.

But don’t let those collaborations fool you into thinking she plays second fiddle to anyone. Quite the contrary, during a career that has spanned more than four decades, the rock goddess has shown she can command a stage, crush the high notes and shred a six string as confidently, capably and powerfully as any of her male counterparts. –Matt Jacob

Moon Over Vegas Anyone who says that the Las Vegas of old has disappeared hasn’t been to the Copa Room at the Tuscany Casino. Six nights a week, it’s Frank Sinatra’s birthday in 1960, when the members of The Rat Pack Is Back take the stage for a rollicking recreation of Vegas days gone by. Currently starring Chris Jason as Sinatra, Drew Anthony as Dean Martin and Kyle Diamond as Sammy Davis Jr., the show has been going strong for 18 years, and as Vegas continues to evolve, it’s a time capsule of an era that many still consider the town’s golden age. Not only do the stars belt out well-known favorites like “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Volare,” “The Lady Is a Tramp” and “That’s Amore,” but they also faithfully channel the vibe of a ’60s-era Rat Pack show at the other Copa Room, in the Las Vegas Sands. Sinatra introduces Martin as “direct from the bar,” and the trio’s tipsy jokes at each other’s expense are part of the show’s charm. Even if you never made it to Vegas (or hadn’t been born yet) during the original Rat Pack days, The Rat Pack Is Back will make you nostalgic for a time when Frank, Sammy and Dean ruled the Strip. –Josh Bell

At Old Homestead, there’s no shortage of range to its menu. The meal begins with a customizable chilled shellfish platter, with eaters choosing from Maine lobster, king crab, shrimp and oysters. If you’re seeking an alternative entrée, the expertly prepared Dover Sole Meuniere is an absolute jewel. But the top prizes are the dryaged steaks, like the 14-ounce New York Strip and the 24-ounce bone-in ribeye. The pro pick is the bone-in 16-ounce filet mignon, mingling velvety smooth texture with rich flavor you’d never expect from a steak so lean. –Brock Radke Caesars Palace, 4:30-10 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., 4:30-10:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat. 702.731.7560

Ye Mistic Few spirits get the party started better than rum, and one of the Strip’s best places to enjoy it, Rhumbar at The Mirage, recently reopened with an entirely refreshed bar program. And while you’re drinking in the venue’s new decor (bright colors, lush greenery and island-inspired prints), order up a Ye Mistic, a delicious blend of Bacardi Dragon Berry, Giffard strawberry and kiwi. Don’t miss out on Rhumbar’s other offerings as well, including a new cigar menu, snack selection and entertainment lineup. Let the party begin!

Creative Celebration If you check out Jabbawockeez at MGM Grand, you won’t just be seeing a dance performance. You’ll be immersed in a playful, creative multimedia experience, as much in the tradition of Vegas institutions like Cirque du Soleil as it is related to traditional hip-hop dance. All of the performers wear white masks and remain silent, allowing their dance moves (along with music and video elements) to do the talking for them. The Jabbawockeez stage show has been in Vegas since 2010, and the latest iteration, Jreamz, stars a pajama-clad dancer named PJ who wanders through the world of the Jabbawockeez, alternately bemused and belligerent, as

the dancers interact with each other, with elaborate video installations, and with the audience. Crowd members may end up onstage with one of the Jabbawockeez, or participating in a mock marriage ceremony (complete with pre-nuptial agreement). Onstage, the Jabbawockeez pantomime along with movie clips and engage in video game-style fight scenes, all infused with their unique style of hip-hop dance. That means they can get down to Celine Dion’s “Beauty and the Beast” just as easily as Ginuwine’s “Pony.” Those songs and more create a mix of music, dance and visuals, a unique show that both embraces and transcends its B-boy origins. –Josh Bell

Modern Throwback Center Cut Steakhouse walks a line between throwback and modern. The upscale eatery feels as if it could have easily housed the likes of Bugsy Siegel and other slick-suited gangsters; then again, maybe you’ll catch a hot DJ chomping down on a steak before a late-night performance. Appetizers like mushroom crostini satisfy, and you can’t go wrong with pork belly or the deep-fried oysters served on the half shell.

But you came here for steak. Among the 28-day wet-aged and 45-day dry-aged cuts available, the 18-ounce cowboy bone-in ribeye is a serious piece of meat. It’s big enough for two, too. Treat yourself to an add-on lobster tail, which comes with clarified butter and lemon. Don’t skimp on sides either, like crusted mac and cheese...because why wouldn’t you want that? –Jason Harris Flamingo, 5-10 p.m. daily. 702.784.8821

Using his expressive eyes and a flashlight, he dashes into the audience to find cohorts who will assist him with strange tasks that come from a very childlike imagination. While Tape Face’s intent is creating visual jokes with wait-for-it reveals, his

creator Sam Wills is intentionally bringing fringe festival entertainment to the Strip—and making it work. It’s one thing to play to fringe festival audiences that expect the unexpected, but performing a participatory act for Vegas visitors with diverse entertainment options is riskier. Though, if the packed house at shows this year are any indication, Tape Face has no shortage of volunteers willing to join him onstage. And anything goes from there, in a PG-13 way. –Matt Kelemen

Chateau Nightclub & Rooftop

Welcome, 2019!

Celebrate at parties all around town All you know is you’re in Las Vegas to party for New Year’s Eve. But now you need to figure out just where to party. He’s one of the original EDM DJs that started the Las Vegas nightclub residency rage more than a decade ago. Paul Oakenfold is back in Sin City this New Year’s weekend for a special performance at Chateau Nightclub & Rooftop at Paris beginning at 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 30. The next night, ring in 2019 with a super bash as both Chateau and Beer Park open their rooftops to guests to have full access to both venues for one price—it’s the perfect spot to party all night and catch the Strip fireworks show at midnight. Feel like getting dressed in costume? Then head to Montecristo Cigar Bar at Caesars Palace for its roaring ’20s Great Gatsby-themed party. Also at Caesars Palace, megaclub Omnia

26 12.30.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

welcomes Kaskade and DJ Karma on Dec. 30 and Calvin Harris with Generik, Bamboozle and Mark Eteson on Dec. 31. Over at The Venetian, enjoy an open bar from 9 to 11 p.m. at Tao nightclub, while hip-hop star Gucci Mane helps revelers ring in the new year. More hip-hop heavyweights help partiers say goodbye to 2018 at Drai’s nightclub at The Cromwell. Enjoy special concerts by Big Sean on Dec. 30 and Future on Dec. 31. For more themed New Year’s Eve celebrations, start making your way to the hipster downtown Las Vegas scene with a stop at the newly remodeled Thunderbird Boutique Hotel & Lounge. The property is hosting two bashes— the Atomic Ball in the lounge, where rockabilly music and style reigns, and the more formal and fancy Black and Gold NYE Party in the

showroom, where guests can indulge in bottle service and VIP table experiences. Take it back a couple of decades at Downtown Grand’s free Whoa! 90’s Grand House Party hosted by Joey Lawrence. Guests are encouraged to rock ’90s gear and throughout the night enjoy music of the decade, throwback cocktails, fly dancers and ’90s props and décor. Head to the tallest building in town (and west of the Mississippi), the Stratosphere hotel’s tower, for its New Year’s Eve parties. Ring in 2019 at either the 107 SkyLounge celebration from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. with a two-hour open bar, party favors and DJs, or head one floor up to the 108 Party in the Sky with three-hour open bar, specialty food stations, go-go dancers and DJs. Both spots are perfect for enjoying the Strip’s fireworks show. –Kiko Miyasato

End of Discussion. Although that may sound like the final word on dinner, it’s really just the beginning at NoMad Restaurant at NoMad Las Vegas. The ultra-trendy restaurant by Will Guidara and Daniel Humm, which has its origins in New York, has an incredible cocktail program to accompany the celebrated menu and the seriously swank interior, which resembles an old-school library with thousands of books stacked three levels high. And although the End of Discussion is not an aperitif per se, the smoky, spicy mescal- and tequila-filled drink will certainly get you through the preamble to your meal—and you may nurse it well into your entrée. The Pink Lady is a little mellower, Plymouth gin-based, with apricot liqueur, apple brandy and grenadine topped with egg white, and certainly won’t make it through the first course. Pull out a tome and peruse its contents while you wait for your perfect popovers to arrive to the table—they’re light, airy and luscious. They’ll barely last through the Oysters Madison, little bites served two ways on the half shell—chilled, with a light champagne mignonette sauce, and grilled, laden with breadcrumbs and Parmesan. Ibérico ham with grilled bread and tomato relish makes another nice appetizer that primes you for the main course. The main menu isn’t overly broad here, making it easy to narrow your entrée choices. Two signature dishes, the whole roasted chicken stuffed with foie gras and black truffle, and 32-ounce, 80-day dry-aged ribeye, are

Pink Lady

Cavatelli pasta

designed for two, and each has a gorgeous, eye-catching presentation. But if you’re in the mood to keep it all to yourself, try a pasta dish. Cavatelli comes with ricotta, Parmesan, sausage and fragrant, beautiful black truffle. If you’re a vegetarian, order this sans sausage, and you’re good to go. A seemingly simple broccoli is a visual delight, bright green with cheddar crisps adding another pop of color. Lamb is another Instagrammable dish, with the flesh a brilliant pink, contrasting with its darker crust and the peas surrounding. A side or two won’t come amiss—the baked potato Dumont is a saucy classic, rich and decadent, and the sautéed wild mushrooms will

have any lover of the funghi drooling, finishing off the entire dish before a dining companion can make a move on it. Desserts are just as delightful here as you’d imagine, with a yummy mango cobbler served in a cast iron pan and accompanied by lime granita. Milk & Honey plays on the graham crackers and milk so many of us were served as children, but much better—honey-oat shortbread is accompanied by ice cream. And if you did indulge a little too much in the aforementioned mushrooms, try the light concoction of A Little Something. Lemon sherbet with candied lemon is covered with champagne, and every sip elicits a satisfied sigh. LasVegasMagazine.com 12.30.18

Eric Montgomery

Bar manager joins a longtime Las Vegas hot spot Eric Montgomery gets to claim something no one else in the country can claim: He’s the bar manager for Tao Asian Bistro at The Venetian, the most profitable restaurant in the U.S. So, just how does it feel being a part of something so successful? “It’s amazing to be a part of,” Montgomery says. “Being lucky enough and fortunate enough to have that exposure day in and day out is amazing. I really enjoy it. I can’t say there’s anywhere else I’d rather be.” But it wasn’t all luck for Montgomery, it was hard work, too. Although he was born in Virginia and raised in Oklahoma, Chicago is where he finished high school, graduated college and began a career in the food and beverage industry. For years, Montgomery has served as both a bartender and bar manager for high-end hotels and restaurants in Chicago. Then about a year ago, he decided to make the move to Las Vegas to

30 12.30.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

join Tao to manage the bar and lounge. He was familiar with the brand from its Chicago outfit. “I knew the name and reputation,” he says. “The amount of volume that we do is unmatched by anything I’ve ever seen or experienced.” And it’s Montgomery’s job to make sure that Tao retains its well-deserved reputation for having excellent Asian-inspired, modern-witha-twist, diverse-and-delicious cocktails. It’s the people, too, that continue to make Tao a front-runner in the dining game. “There are some deep roots that are in Tao that started back in New York. They brought those people from New York here and planted that seed here and it’s been growing,” Montgomery says. “The Tao family—it’s us, it’s the people from New York, L.A., Chicago, Vegas. Anyone who works for Tao is part of the family. We all spend a lot of time grinding and working hard together.” –Kiko Miyasato

A longtime staple—and offered at all of Tao’s locations across the country—the Bubbles & Berries is one of the most popular specialty drinks on the cocktail menu. The “very well-balanced, really well-done cocktail that appeals to a bunch of different palates,” says Montgomery, is a blend of Absolut Elyx vodka, St-Germain elderflower liqueur and muddled strawberries and is topped off with G.H. Mumm rosé. –KM

ON AND OFF THE STRIP

ON THE STRIP

Camera Ready

Eatery reels in the glitterati Instagram alert: Every inch of the beautiful, opulent entryway of Catch (Aria, 702.590.5757), the Strip’s latest seafood and sushi restaurant, is filled with colorful flowers and lights. The glitzy, attention-grabbing archway is right on brand for the hip eatery, a favorite among celebrities in New York City and Los Angeles, and it sets the tone for the decadent meal awaiting you inside. From giant, bird-caged booths to trees adorned with translucent orbs, there’s plenty

to gawk at once you’re seated. But feast your eyes instead on the menu: Catch’s signature cold plate, the truffle sashimi, presents thinly sliced tuna and hamachi delicately rolled in a tantalizing, impossible-to-forget sauce of chili oil, ponzu and black truffle, then topped with caviar and scallions. The melt-in-your-mouth texture in every umami-laden bite creates one of the best new dishes on the Strip this year, and it’s only the beginning of a diverse set of offerings at Catch. –Leslie Ventura

The Southern Nevada brewing scene has come a long way in a short time. These days you can find local craft beers at your neighborhood tavern as well as the finest bars and cocktail spots on the Strip, but there’s only one spot where all the taps are occupied by Nevada breweries, and that’s Nevada Taste Site (1221 S. Main St., 702.381.0812) in downtown’s happening Arts District. Relax in the ample backyard, enjoy the vintage decor and sample concoctions from CraftHaus, Joseph James, Big Dog’s, Bad Beat and more while snacking on baked, Thai-style chicken wings, skewers and lettuce wraps. –Brock Radke

#trending Curry mango dipping sauce. It’s slightly sweet, well-spiced and creamy, and it’s reason enough to visit the whimsical “chippy” Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips (Linq Promenade, 702.322.0529) when you’re on the Strip. The absolutely ideal, fresh-fried cod fillets, flaky fish give that sauce a reason for existence, but you can opt for house-made tartar, Southwest ranch or sriracha aioli if you prefer. Ramsay’s cutest Vegas restaurant also does some mean fried chicken and “dirty chips” with jalapeños and crispy chorizo. –BR

Fremont Street Experience rings in the New Year with a mind-blowing celebration 42 12.30.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

Attendees of previous America’s Party Downtown celebrations at Fremont Street Experience might think the multistage macro block party was already the official City of Las Vegas New Year’s Eve event. This year it officially becomes official. It’s hard to imagine topping the gargantuan affair with its 12 bands playing on four stages, dancing DJs in a dedicated EDM area, an early evening count-

down from the East Coast on the world’s largest video screen and onstage pyrotechnics. All of this plus Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, hometown heroes The Killers on the Viva Vision canopy, zip lines and zombies set the stage for an explosive Dec. 31. Luckily, the zombies inside FSE are contained in the Fear the Walking Dead Survival immersive thrill attraction, while the ones

outside the gate entrance locations at Main Street, 3rd Street and 4th Street are turned away due to the “No Outside Zombies” policy strictly enforced by the 50-member security detail. That’s good, because as FSE Chief Marketing Officer Paul McGuire recommends, the best way to experience the Experience on New Year’s Eve is on foot, taking in all the sights and sounds, and making new partygoing friends without having to flee a horde of zombies.

Premiere cover bands such as AlterEgo, Empire Records and Zowie Bowie will play danceable, genre-spanning sing-along hits, while Casino Center Boulevard, normally a throughway across Fremont, will be blocked off so a southward-facing stage with a digital backdrop can turn the streets into an open-air nightclub featuring dancing DJs. “If you want a DJ and you want to dance, it’s an amazing vibe,” says McGuire. “That’s a new addition that we introduced two years ago and has

America’s Party Downtown Fremont Street Experience 6 p.m. Dec. 31, starting at $35 plus and fee. 702.678.5600

been very, very successful. We’ll also have dancers and aerial artists on that particular stage that will kind of display Cirque-style performances to get people all engaged.” Guests are welcome to fly into the New Year on the SlotZilla ziplines, or check out the multiple environments of Fear the Walking Dead Survival. Animatronics, feature-film worthy set design and effects, and a 3D zombie shoot-’em-up await visitors who prove themselves free of undead infection. No special backpacks or helmets are needed. “It’s a walk-through experience broken up into eight zones,” says McGuire. “It’s meant to play off season one of Fear the Walking Dead where people are starting to get infected and they don’t know why. … You think you’re safe, but you’re not as safe as you thought.” You’re completely safe within the FSE party zone though, with state-of-the-art surveillance keeping an eye on things and plainclothes security mixed in among the crowds. Convenient parking is available at the FSE garage (fees apply), and fare ranging from fine dining at Fremont’s hotels to street-level comfort foods provides antidotes to pre-party appetites. This could be the last New Year’s Eve to see the current version of Viva Vision as well, as McGuire says FSE has just been approved for funding that will lead to a $30 million overhaul of the canopy before Dec. 31, 2020, the date of the second annual official City of Las Vegas New Year’s extravaganza.

Meet Me in the Metal Disturbed (pictured) and current tour opener Three Days Grace (T-Mobile Arena, 888.929.7849 AXS) complement each other well, both having expanded upon the post-millennial alt-metal playbook drafted by hard-grooving, chord-crunching bands such as Pantera, with Disturbed’s roots stretching further back to classic metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Three Days

Grace’s sound leans more towards postgrunge, but the Canadian band perhaps wrote and recorded the most Pantera-esque homage of the two acts with 2009’s “The Good Life.” Audiences in Vegas on Jan. 12 are more like to hear Genesis’ “Land of Confusion” from Disturbed, along with a rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” The latter is included on the Chicago quartet’s latest

album Evolution, which cracked the top 5 in October following five consecutive albums that debuted at No. 1. Three Days Grace’s cover of Phantogram’s “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” was released as a single a year and a half before their latest album Outsider came out, but is a good indication of the range of tastes that inform the band’s material five years into adding singer Matt Walst. –Matt Kelemen
