Timeless Appeal

One of the great things about Las Vegas is how you can live in the present or in the past; both exist simultaneously here, and both are heavily supported by the millions of visitors who fly into Harry Reid International Airport every year. After all, while Las Vegas has made many improvements to ensure its future, this is also a city that pays homage to bygone eras. It’s part of what makes a visit here so exciting—call it a desert time machine.

For instance, if you want to live in the present, it doesn’t get much more contemporary than music acts like country sensation Sam Hunt, who performs this week at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Changing the Game,” p. 32) or the teaming up of extreme-metal bands Mastodon and Gojira at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“Monsters of Modern Metal,” p. 36 ). If your tastes are more oldies radio, you’ll defi nitely want to get your tickets to Gary Lewis and the Playboys at Golden Nugget (“Count Us In,” p. 20). More a Motown fan? One of the best tribute shows in town, Hitzville The Show at Rio, features one of the best singers/impersonators in town— Jin Jin Reeves, who talks to Las Vegas Magazine this week about her craft (“Music to Move You,” p. 21). And whether you’re a fan of new or old, you’ll defi nitely enjoy the wide-ranging talents of Frankie Moreno, who begins a residency at Palms this week (“A Talent Whirlwind,” p. 17 ), and Donny Osmond, who continues his smash residency at Harrah’s (“The One & Only,” p. 34).

Dining-wise, a brand-new restaurant has opened up at Caesars Palace, one sure to be a huge hit with those who like shared plates: Stanton Social Prime, chef Chris Santos’ Vegas version of his Stanton Social in Manhattan (“That’s Entertainment!” p. 14).

New or old, present or past, it’s all here in Las Vegas. You just have to know where to look.

Music to Move You

Hitzville The Show star Jin Jin Reeves talks about bringing Motown and more to the Las Vegas stage

Jin Jin Reeves and the Hitzville The Show cast create music magic in Las Vegas five nights a week. Reeves, who is also the producer and choreographer of the show, shines onstage as she takes on the personas and voices of some of Motown’s biggest names like Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and Tina Turner. Backed by a phenomenal live band and a troupe of accomplished singers, Reeves and the cast throw a nonstop party spotlighting the genre’s biggest and most-beloved hits while exuding an energy that is simply showstopping. Reeves has been performing different iterations of Hitzville in Las Vegas for more than two decades, and is excited to bring the show to The Duomo stage at Rio, where it opened a few months ago. Las Vegas Magazine’s Kiko Miyasato recently spoke with Reeves about the show and the importance of connecting with the audience..

There’s a lot of Motown artists and Motown songs. How did you narrow down the choices of what to include in the show?

It depends on what I feel. This time I decided to add more soul to the show— so I added The Emotions, The Spinners. I wanted to bring something different this time. Tina is not Motown and the O’Jays are not Motown, so that’s why the show is Motown and more.

What is it about the music of Motown that you love?

I grew up in Motown. I grew up in Detroit. I was in a summer youth program with a lady named Kim Weston, she sang “It Takes Two” with Marvin Gaye, she has quite a few hits. Kim had a summer youth program like (’80s movie) Fame, before Fame ever became famous. In this program, it was for underprivileged children that wouldn’t otherwise get opportunities. They taught us how to be professional singers if indeed that was what our desire was in life—to sing, to dance, to act, anything that had to do with the entertainment industry. So that’s how I got started. Motown greats would come to the program like Martha and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Alvin Ailey, so many Motown greats would come and share their knowledge and experiences. That’s how I ended up doing Motown music—it’s just who I am and what I love the most.

The intimacy of the showroom allows you to connect with the audience—is that something that is important to you?

It is my absolute favorite thing to do is connect with the audience. I love people. I see peoples’ spirits are being lifted by what we’re giving; I want to know that they’re feeling us. I’m energizing the audience.

12 | 4.16.23 Las Vegas Magazine Spotlight Courtesy photo

When you’re channeling Aretha, Tina, Diana, your energy is off the charts.

I have a passion and a love for each artist. It allows me to show the versatility in my voice and hopefully capture the memories of the audience so they can reminisce (being) back in the day. I’m taking their minds through a journey through the song and doing the best I can, and as close as I can to the original voices, but I do it my way.

Are there any particular numbers that you love to perform?

I enjoy everything I do, honestly. Aretha, Gladys, Tina, sometimes I do the duet of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. I try and go into character for each (artist) that I perform as.

Readers have a lot of show options in the city. Why should they come check out Hitzville?

First of all, I believe we’re the No. 1 Motown revue in Las Vegas. I think that we’re at a five-star level. We have a live band—there’s nothing like live music, and I think that makes it captivating and a pull that people would enjoy. We’ve been licensed by the Motown Museum—which is a huge compliment—to do the music of Motown. … I would encourage guests to come and let their hair down and come in and enjoy. We want to take their minds on a journey so they can reminisce where they were back in the day. If they weren’t living back then, then today is a new memory they can form and take with them.

That’s Entertainment!

New Caesars Palace restaurant excels at presentation

Showmanship is the central theme in Stanton Social Prime, a restaurant that is sure to making several “best of” lists before the year is over. An offshoot of the popular Stanton Social in Manhattan, this restaurant, a partnership between Caesars Entertainment and Tao Group Hospitality, stuns with its décor, service and food.

The feeling of exclusivity here is immediate the minute you step inside. The design by Rockwell Group brings to mind extravagant costume design (red, blue and gold patterns) and dressing rooms (the decorative paneling in two private dining rooms). Whether you take a seat at a table or at the 10-seat bar, the feel of this space instantly makes you want to do some celebrating.

And how better to celebrate than with a pre-dinner cocktail? The showmanship continues with The Black Regiment, made with Bulleit rye, Carpano Antica vermouth, Amaro Montenegro and cinnamon—and served in a bottle! If you’re driving, the zeroproof (and delicious) Strawberry Rhode more than satisfies with Kin Euphorics High Rhode, strawberry purée, elderflower and lemon juice.

Now you’re ready for some real culinary fun! Appetizers range from the Famous French onion soup dumplings (topped with Gruyère cheese and garlic croutons) and “Al Pastor” yellowtail crudo (featuring grilled pineapple, cilantro, lime and pineapple ponzu) to pierogies made with potato, goat cheese and truffle. Pre-dinner bread gets a boost with the smoked butter board, where sourdough demi baguettes can be accompanied with Thumbelina crudites and Maldon sea flakes.

The steak menu rules! All cuts are seasoned with house dry rub, rested in Beurre de Baratte and finished with pink Himalayan salt. We recommend the Pretty in Pink, a 10-ounce filet with pink peppercorn sauce and pink oyster mushrooms. All sauces are dispensed from vintage perfume bottles with names to match. (How can you help but want to order a bottle of “Chanterelle No. 5”?)

Don’t forget sides like Dirty Tots, served with caviar and lobster crème fraiche. –Ken

A Talent Whirlwind

Multitalented performer begins 2023 residency at Palms

Frankie Moreno, the multifaceted singer and songwriter who holds the record for the most No. 1 songs on the iTunes U.S. Top 40 charts, performed his first ticketed concert in Las Vegas at the Palms resort just west of the Strip. That feels like a lifetime ago, and it certainly was for this popular destination, which has changed ownership a few times since then.

Now, the new team behind the reinvigorated Palms is focusing on live entertainment, and Moreno is back in the fold. He’s rocking and rolling with his knockout band and a few special guest stars until at least mid-summer at Kaos, the versatile space built as a hi-tech nightclub and now used for a variety of innovative performances.

Moreno, who always bounces between musical genres and styles, launched this residency in the summer of 2022, shining bright and crackling with energy in front of a crowd of his loyal local and visiting fans (who snatched up cabaret tables and cozy booths on the floor) as well as a joyful posse of Vegas entertainers and industry figures who flocked to the mezzanine level to sip cocktails and explore what live music could look like in this intriguing setting.

Spoiler alert: It’s a lot of fun. “It’s literally the perfect space for what we do. We built the show specifically for the room,” Moreno told the Las Vegas Sun after his Kaos debut. “The energy in there is indescribable. It’s intimate but like an arena at the same time. We are very excited to be there and very thankful to the Palms for (this) partnership.” –

It’s in the Cards

Magician

Be prepared for an audience participation trick right out of the gate when attending Limitless, Shin Lim’s close-up magic showcase inside The Mirage Theatre. Spoiler alert: It involves cards. Although Lim resists his act being referred to as “magic,” as in supernatural defiance of physics, he can’t argue that it’s not magical. He draws too many “oohs” and “aahs” from fans who were introduced to his spectacular brand of sleight-of-hand on America’s Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Once they are seated and see the plastic-wrapped rectangles in front of them, they are fully drawn into Lim’s universe.

That universe was created when Lim exchanged a future playing 88 piano keys for one that orbited around decks of 52 playing cards. Lim was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome while preparing for a career in music, a plot point in his life that is woven into the biographical thread running through the show. The stage set-up is simple: piano, table, crystal-clear jumbo screen above the stage, mentalist Colin Cloud, and Lim’s graceful hands.

Scottish-born Cloud, himself an AGT alumni, transcends mentalist tropes with a rapid-fire delivery and razor-sharp timing. He keeps the show moving quickly with segments that contrast with Lim’s ethereal flow and graceful delivery. One might think carpal tunnel would have hampered Lim’s ability to pull off amazing feats of dexterity, but if he’s feeling any pain, he hides it well.

The ability to manage pain became crucial once the emotive pianist was bitten by the sleight-of-hand bug. Witnessing one trick, the slip force, got him hooked. A medical sabbatical from music study before he embarked on a sustained period of 20 hours a week of practice gave him a chance to refine his approach to close-up magic and develop his own tricks as well as garner a YouTube following. Increasing momentum led to his first International Federation of Magic Societies (FISM) convention in 2012. He came in sixth at the world championship held at the triannual convention, then won first place in 2015. Music’s loss was truly magic’s gain. –

Count Us In

There’s just something about the music of the ’60s that keeps it fascinating. It was an era when the British Invasion was lighting the States on fire with bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, heck, even Herman’s Hermits and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

American bands were inspired to keep up with their U.K. counterparts, and that competition spawned an amazing run of singles. One of the biggest from the mid-’60s was “This Diamond Ring,” the first from Gary Lewis and the Playboys (which also

shot to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts).

It wouldn’t be the last hit for the group, whose frontman is the son of legendary comedian Jerry Lewis. In just a few shorts years they were incredibly prolific, producing classics like “Count Me In,” “Save Your Heart for Me,” “Everybody Loves a Clown,” “She’s Just My Style,” “Sure Gonna Miss Her,” “Green Grass” and many more. It’s hard to imagine they broke up in 1970, given how long their music has endured. But on the strength of that material, the

group has enjoyed massive success touring through the years.

They’ll be making a stop at Golden Nugget this week. Whether you were around during their heyday or you just know them from oldies radio, this is a show you won’t want to miss. We practically guarantee you’ll recognize each and every song. How many bands share that bragging right? –Ken

Energized As Well As Endearing

The Westgate illusionist makes magic with personality

If enthusiasm could be transformed into pure energy, Jen Kramer could generate enough from one performance to power a small village. The illusionist, a Yale graduate who’s appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us as well as Masters of Illusion and NBC’s Today, wins audiences over with three things: A smile that just won’t quit; corny jokes that will have you rolling your eyes but laughing all the same; and making the impossible possible. We almost guarantee you’ll be shaking your head numerous times during The Magic of Jen Kramer, trying to process what you’ve seen.

Some of my particular favorite moments:

• A video Kramer shows the audience of her card-handling skills, one which later turns out to be strangely prophetic at the conclusion of a subsequent card trick;

• Kramer’s version of a game show, complete with three mystery doors, an audience volunteer and a hundred-dollar bill;

• Three beach balls, a fake Facebook profile and a box that hangs from the ceiling. (For those who think magicians use plants, heads up: Yours truly got picked for this, and speaking as a non-plant, I was completely floored by the result.)

Kramer’s connection with audiences is undeniable. In a very pleasing segment, Kramer shows a video that demonstrates her commitment to spreading the joy of magic to other countries. The looks on children’s faces is a joy to watch, and is a reminder that magic really is a universal language. –Ken Miller Westgate Las Vegas, ticketmaster.com

Welcome to the best season in Las Vegas—pool season! Nighttime is no longer the only time to party, as dayclubs across the city open their doors for revelry under the sun.

If you’re looking for dayclubs with awesome views, there are a couple to choose from. Start with Drai’s Beachclub on the rooftop of The Cromwell. This massive, bi-level dayclub offers two huge pools, luxury bungalows with their own dipping pools, tons of daybeds, towering palm trees and views up and down the boulevard. The music

here leans more towards hip-hop, with performances this week by DJ Romeo (April 16 & 22) and Ne-Yo (April 22).

Another dayclub with unbeatable Strip views—and Miami Beach décor vibes—is Marquee Dayclub at The Cosmopolitan. The parties here are wild and just all-out fun, with cabanas, daybeds and water-soaking loungers adding to the pool scene.

The rooftop dayclub welcomes Stephi K (April 20), DJ Shift (April 21) and Lost Frequencies (April 22); and don’t miss the Sunday pool party,

Wet Republic

Full Bloom, as the dayclub transforms into a floral paradise with stunning décor, roaming performers and live DJ sets.

If you want that backyard barbecue pool party scene, two dayclubs rule this atmosphere: GO Pool at Flamingo and Influence, The Pool at Linq Hotel. GO Pool offers live DJs spinning top 40 music and plenty of watery surroundings, with giant pools with cascading waterfalls and daybeds situated right along the water. Influence offers some of the largest cabanas at any pool club into the daylife scene at some of the city’s best dayclubs

(including the REQ Room, which can fit up to 30 people), lily pad daybeds, soaking lounge chairs and fun backyard games and live DJs.

Unlike any other dayclub in the city, Élia Beach Club at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas offers sandy beaches. With a global, bohemian-island theme, the luxury dayclub offers tons of different cabana and daybed experiences, including daybeds on the sand right along the lagoon-like waters. Keep the island vibes going at Ayu Dayclub at Resorts World Las Vegas, which welcomes some of the biggest DJs in EDM this week with performances by Cash Cash (April 21) and Tiësto (April 22).

Tao Beach at The Venetian is a massive dayclub that recently received a complete overhaul. Guests will feel as if they’ve traveled to an exotic locale and found a sanctuary of paradise with multiple pools, luxuriously designed cabanas and bungalows. Each daytime party is soundtracked by big-name DJs including Lil Jon (April 16), Sam Feldt (April 21) and Illenium (April 22).

Let’s not forget the longest-running dayclub in the city (and Las Vegas Magazine Hall of Fame honoree), Wet Republic at MGM

Grand. While this dayclub has been open for more than a decade, it still remains a superstar because of its wickedly impressive DJ lineup throughout the season and some of the best poolside bungalows, not to mention one of the best audio-visual systems offered inside any dayclub. This week welcomes Deorro (April 16), Mike Attack (April 21) and Party Favor (April 23).

With the biggest stage at any dayclub, Daylight Beach Club at

Mandalay Bay is also considered party central because of the dayclub’s roster of live performances and DJ sets and themed parties like EDM-centric Sunburst Saturdays and hip-hop themed LIT Sundays. Catch L.A.-based rapper RJMrLA (April 16), bass-house EDM DJ SpydaT.E.K (April 21) and producer and DJ CID (April 22). –Kiko Miyasato

Friends With Benefits

Paulo Duran

Guests come for the dynamite food, but they also come for Paulo Duran, director of operations for Brera Osteria and Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano, both at The Venetian. “I’ve gone from creating relationships with guests to creating friends,” says the Mexico native. “It’s like a family that keeps growing and it all starts with creating a memorable experience for guests that dine with us.”

In fact, Las Vegas visitors have followed Duran since he started in the city’s food and beverage industry nearly two decades ago, working at celebrity

chefs’ restaurants including Wolfgang Puck and Mario Batali. Duran—coined by his coworkers as Mr. Wonderful— joined the two Venetian restaurants a couple of years ago and is loving his new homes. “What makes our two restaurants special is the food, and we take a lot of pride in the hospitality that we provide,” he says. “We perfect the things that define good service.”

Brera is in the beautiful St. Mark’s Square and Matteo’s is downstairs in Restaurant Row, and you can find Duran running back and forth between

both, all day long. “I canceled my gym membership, ’cause I do plenty of cardio every day,” he jokes.

But Duran doesn’t mind the hard work because the rewards of running two successful restaurants and overseeing a staff of more than 200 is what drives him. “I try not to think about the stresses and go with the flow,” he says.

“But I enjoy my accomplishments. I’ve done it for some many years. If I was to quit tomorrow, where would I go? I don’t have a talent for any other industry. This is my passion.” –Kiko

Enjoy south-of-theborder classics at Diablo’s Cantina

Part of the fun of visiting Las Vegas is discovering all the places that allow for plenty of people-watching. When it comes to Luxor, Diablo’s Cantina is about the best place for that. It’s centrally located in the property so that plenty of visitors must walk past it to get to wherever they’re going. So snag a table and get ready for some serious fun. And what goes better with fun than a

heaping plate of nachos and a margarita?

As you would expect, Diablo’s features a lengthy margarita menu, one featuring Bombay Sapphire gin. You may want to go traditional with the house margarita, which you can make spicy or make “golden” with Casamigos reposado. If you want something a bit di erent, opt for the mezcal Old-Fashioned, fea-

turing El Silencio mezcal, muddled orange and cherry with Angostura bitters and simple syrup. Any of these will wake up your tastebuds for the enjoyment to come.

The nachos here are truly something special. To begin with, they’re served in a bowl, which helps ensure that almost any chip you grab will have cheese on it—and toppings like pickled jalapenos, pico de

gallo, crema fresca and guacamole (add chicken, steak or shrimp for a bit extra). Also delicious and shareable is the aguachile shrimp ceviche, made with citrus-cured shrimp, cucumber, pickled onion, cilantro and red peppers.

Now you’re into the hard decision-making part of your experience: Tacos? Enchiladas?

Burrito? Fajitas? We get it; we’ve been there. The good news at Diablo’s is there are no wrong choices. And some of your options allow you to mix and match meats so that you can get little bit of everything without breaking your budget. You can get enchiladas in flavors like veggie and beef barbacoa, or go for the

Diablo’s Enchilada Platter—a trio of beef, chicken and shrimp. Ditto with fajitas; you can either get one meat or go for the Trio Fajitas—chicken, steak and shrimp.

As you’ll quickly discover, whatever you order, Diablo’s does not skimp on portion size. The tacos, which are served in threes and range from al pastor shrimp and pork carnitas to Baja-style cod, steak filet and peppers and mushrooms, are mouthfuls in the best sense of the word. You’ll hear absolutely no one at your table complaining that they’re still hungry after these mini-beasts.

For those brave souls, reaper salsa is available upon request to accompany any of these entrees. We recommend starting with small dabs and see how that goes. It’s hot, but the flavor it adds is immense and well worth the e ort.

The three classic Mexican desserts are all here, and you may want to order all of them to avoid missing out. Mexican flan is a smooth and creamy vanilla-and-caramel-flavored delight, while the churros are served with vanilla or chocolate ice cream (it’s kinda like eating an ice cream cake). Speaking of ice cream, fans of the cold treat will want to order buñuelos, a combo of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

blazes new trails in country music with hip-hop beats and respect for tradition

in country music like Sam Hunt’s. The Georgia-born ex-quarterback seemed to come out of nowhere in the mid2010s and changed the game, first

and segueing into a narrative about unrequited love.

Executing songs like successful gridiron plays is Hunt’s forte, but his inner circle includes writers and pro-

penning songs for other singers after ducers such as Zach Crowell, Shane

arriving in Nashville, then taking center stage as a recording artist with groundbreaking 2014 album Montevallo. By 2017 he had broken the record for most weeks (34) at the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with hit single “Body Like a Back Road.”

Hunt’s lyrical flow, wordsmithing talent and abilities to both express from a personal place and see things through the eyes of others are primary factors in his rise to the top. He also has a vision for his own brand of country music that drew on R&B and hip-hop beats as well as an appreciation for tradition.

The latter is best exemplified on “Hard to Forget” from 2020’s Southside, which samples the first line from honky-tonk star Webb Pierce’s 1953 hit “There Stands the Glass” without e ects before aligning it with an electronic rhythm

McAnally and Josh Osborne. He has a muse in wife Hannah Lee Fowler, who he met while playing football for University of Alabama at Birmingham. Hunt had bought a guitar before he left Cedartown, Ga. for college, where he studied philosophy and business. He became proficient and began writing free-verse lyrics, developing his own style in the process.

Two months after trying out for the NFL he was in Nashville, quickly becoming immersed in the culture and networking himself into the industry. He co-wrote “Come Over” for Kenny Chesney with McAnally

and Osborne, then Keith Urban’s

single “Cop Car” with Crowell, and Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight” with Osborne. Hunt recorded the latter two songs for Montevallo, but his first No. 1 would be a cowrite with McAnally and Osborne, “Leave the Night On.”

The album is named for Fowler’s hometown. Although Hunt may have dreamed of being a star, he may not have considered the impact the Montevallo

However, Fowler, the inspiration for “Body Like a Back Road,” changed her mind by May, and the following month she gave birth to a daughter. The tour takes its name from his latest single, which precedes a third studio album that could be out by the end of the year. Entertainment royalty Donny Osmond returns to his electrifying residency

AS A TEENAGER , Donny Osmond had the surreal experience of playing Yahtzee against his younger brother Jimmy in Elvis Presley’s suite at the Hilton. Presley famously headlined the Hilton, now Westgate Las Vegas, and the youthful pop star was welcome at the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s court. Osmond is the headliner now, paying tribute to Presley as well as Vegas itself at his red-hot self-titled residency at Harrah’s.

Harrah’s, coincidentally, is illuminated in purple by the time of Osmond’s 8 p.m. shows. Fans that grew up on his music know the royal pigment was his professed favorite color in the ’70s as he went from pop singer to pin-up idol to superstar to superhero. That’s right, in a recurring series of skits on ABC variety series Donny & Marie, Osmond fought for justice as Captain Purple.

Whether he still sports purple socks is a revelation only known to those who have experienced his solo residency, which began the same month as the release of his latest album, Start Again, in September 2021. New songs such as snappy, optimistic R&B smoothie “Don’t Stop” and “On & On” were woven into sets that related Osmond’s autobiography through his music.

Audience members were invited to make requests from various points in Osmond’s recording history. Practically born to sing, he joined his brothers’ barbershop quartet after they were discovered at Disneyland and became regular performers on The Andy Williams Show in the ’60s. The Osmonds scored their first hit with “One Bad Apple” in 1971 and Donny quickly became a focal point for the teen idol industry.

Osmond branched off as a solo artist with “Go Away Little Girl” and a cover of Paul Anka’s “Puppy Love.” Teaming with his sister in 1976 for a variety show resulted in huge ratings, making Donny & Marie must-see television on Friday nights. He sang medleys of rock hits in his matured voice, harmonized with his brothers and demonstrated his keyboard chops.

Culture in the ’80s reacted against everything in the ’60s and ’70s, and Osmond struggled. His work ethic and family were his salvations, though, and he returned to the charts in 1989 with “Soldier of Love.” He achieved success onstage in the lead of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and in 2006 won over Broadway critics as Gaston in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

The confidence that Osmond cultivated from musicals showed when he took the stage with Marie for the first time at the Flamingo in 2008. A sixweek engagement stretched into 11 years. The siblings literally became the faces of Vegas entertainment when portraits were rendered many stories high on the Flamingo’s Strip-side exterior.

Osmond’s current electrifying residency is a collaborative effort of A-listers such as director Raj Kapoor and choreographers Nappytabs. The combination of dazzling dancers and live musicians with the ambitions of quite possibly the most seasoned entertainer on the Strip make Captain Purple a worthy successor to The King.

Co-headliners

Gojira and Mastodon share space at the pinnacle of neoprogressive rock

Mastodon teaming up with Gojira for a co-headlining tour has all the impact of King Kong vs. Godzilla or Michael Jordan playing on the same basketball team with Larry Byrd. Just the thought of the progressive hard rock excellence promised by the Mega-Monsters Tour (with special guest Lorna Shore) is enough to whet the appetites of metal-minded music fans hungry for the passion and aggression both bands

deliver like none of their peers on the concert circuit.

Mastodon last toured on the strength of their ninth studio album, Hushed and Grim, which is to their catalog what Physical Graffiti was to Led Zeppelin’s. The sprawling 2021 double album was produced by David Bottrill, who made his bones working with Rush and Peter Gabriel. Boundary-bending fretwork from Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher is enhanced

Mastodon

lineup that’s been together since 1998, grinding away to critical acclaim until 2005’s From Mars to Sirius put them at the top of an extreme music hierarchy that already included Mastodon. The bands toured together in 2014, by which time both acts’ authenticity, complex song structures and willingness to evolve and innovate had invigorated the metal community.

with guest soloing from Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and blues guitarist Marcus King.

Hushed and Grim earned the Atlanta quartet a sixth Grammy nomination, with “Pushing the Tides” included in the Best Metal Performance category at the 64th edition of the awards show. They won at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards for “Sultan’s Curse” from 2017’s Emperor of Sand but lost the 2021 Best Metal Performance award to Dream Theater, as did fellow nominee Gojira.

“Amazonia” from 2021 album Fortitude was the fourth nomination for France’s extreme-metal music export. Bonded by blood due to the deep-rooted partnership of the brothers Duplantier,

Gojira’s audio alloy blends elements of death, groove and thrash metal with goth overtones and socially conscious lyrics. Frontman Joe Duplantier channels his humanist view of the world into songwriting salvos and crushing guitar riffs while Mario Duplantier found early inspiration in the approach of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich to the drum kit and is a on a superhuman level when it comes to blast beats.

Mastodon’s multiple lead singers, including drummer Brann Dailor, create vocals that soar like magic carpets above a landscape of intricate riffing. The band made a big splash in 2004 with second album Leviathan, an epic inspired by Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick Where Ronnie James Dio fought a dragon onstage, Mastodon draws on myths and monsters to create metaphors and allegories that are powerful enough to deliver live without props. Only time will tell how much further Gojira and Mastodon can push it in terms of technique, composition and performance. They both draw from endless wells of inspiration, channel negative themes into positive messages and have stable lineups.

Guitarist Christian Andreu and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie round out a

The Mega-Monsters Tour brings the co-headliners together in their prime and at the top of their game to make what is in effect heavy metal history.

KING TUT’S DEATH MASK

stares benevolently across the Atrium level of Luxor, crossing sightlines with an image of Carrot Top on the showroom marquee opposite Tut’s new home. While the actual mummified remains of the boy king are not on site, Imagine Exhibitions’ archeological exhibit Discovering King Tut’s Tomb—The Experience has been millenniums in the making. From artifacts re-created by skilled artisans to a reproduction of the tomb itself, visitors can experience the sense of wonder Egyptologist Howard Carter felt in 1922 as he first peered into the burial place of Tutankhamun.

The pharaoh from the 18th Dynasty of Egypt did not have a long life, succumbing to ailments at age 19 after ruling for a decade. Carter’s e orts ensured Tut’s immortality. King Tut’s discovery became a commercialized craze, culminating in classic 1932 Universal Pictures horror film The Mummy. A short introductory film kicks o Discovering King Tut’s Tomb as well, establishing the atmosphere before a sliding wall reveals a passage to the past.

A memorabilia shrine paying homage to Carter precedes the series of chambers dedicated to Tut, with sound design conveying the spirit of the British archeologist via voiceover. Placards adhered to walls throughout the exhibit

relate historical details about the unsung indigenous workers and the initial breakthrough into the tomb’s antechamber.

Egyptian culture is put into context as well. Social hierarchies, the importance of bread and beer, and the significance of papyrus are related before the journey takes a spiritual turn.

LUXOR kingtutvegas.com

The first relics chamber contains figurines and statuettes of gods and goddesses. It’s here that deities such as Amun-Ra and Thoth, whose legend would inform the Mummy film franchises, are physically represented. The

process of mummification is related as well, and a decoder for the hieroglyphics included on placards can be found attached to a wall in this area. Artifacts that were buried with Tut are found in the next stage, from sandals imbued with supernatural powers to the iconographic crook and flail. One display screen is dedicated to the ailments of the doomed monarch, from a cleft palate and a deformed spine to the malaria that is credited with causing his demise.

Another constant was gold. Glittering treasures were placed in Tut’s tomb, which provide the highlight of the journey. Re-creations of Tut’s shrine and gold nesting co n await at the climax of the discovery of “wonderful things,” as Carter described the objects unearthed a century ago.

Those can be experienced virtually near the conclusion of the exhibit, with a guided tour made possible by immersive eyewear. Processing the material o erings of Tut’s Tomb may make further exploration unnecessary though. One would have to travel to Egypt to get a more comprehensive presentation of Tutankhamun’s final resting place, and there would be no landmarks featuring Carrot Top to help orient budding Egyptologists toward the entrance.

Home in exclusive community is a custom-built masterpiece

When it comes to Las Vegas real estate, there are breathtaking views, and then there’s … Ascaya, a masterplanned community in the McCullough Mountain Range that rises hundreds of feet above the city, overlooking the Las Vegas Valley, Strip and other mountain ranges. It’s also one of the valley’s most

exclusive communities, and living there is now a reality, thanks to one of its homes hitting the market.

This two-story, 8,723-square-foot estate, listed by Evangelina DukePetroni of IX LUXURY, features four bedrooms, six bathrooms and a four-car garage. It’s a custom-designed masterpiece, and its high-

lights are too numerous to mention here, but you’ll stop and look at nearly every detail, from rounded edges, geometric angles, realism vs. illusion (you’ll get it when you see it!) and light vs. seclusion.

You’ll make your way here via a private entryway with curved walls (talk about a first impression) and

walk through a large pivot door. Natural stone and organic elements are the first thing you’ll notice, the second likely being the floor-to-ceiling windows. Neutral tones are dominant throughout, and the natural light flooding this house is almost a selling point in and of itself!

Touches throughout include elegant light features, a sophisticated, double-sided fireplace, multiple upstairs balconies, built-in wine room and large and inviting indoor and outdoor living spaces. And no matter how many stairways you’ve

seen, you’ve never seen one like this, showcasing the theme of light, transparency and illusion (the stairway and accompanying upstairs catwalk are framed in glass and give the appearance of floating).

The rooms are all spacious and separate enough to give each occupant a feeling of maximum privacy. It all combines as the perfect spot for entertaining, and we haven’t even gotten to the backyard yet!

It’s an entertainer’s paradise, with built-in outdoor kitchen, fire pit and custom infinity pool with Jacuzzi.

And because of its placement (privately tucked into a canyon over looking the city), the views are nothing short of spectacular.

As a resident of Ascaya, you’ll also have access to its 23,000-squarefoot clubhouse, featuring a fitness center, 50-meter swimming pool, tennis and pickleball pavilion, halfcourt basketball and chef’s catering kitchen. –Ken Miller
