Never Out of Style
Even if you’ve never been to a Benihana, odds are you feel like you have. It’s been featured in many movies, TV shows and even music videos over these many decades, with images of its chefs chopping, fl ipping and juggling ingredients as they make the patrons around the table laugh at some serious dad jokes. And if you’re one of those who have never been to a Benihana before, good news: The world’s largest one is right here in Las Vegas at Westgate Las Vegas. And yes, it’s every bit as fun as you’ve been led to imagine.
This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine pays tribute to that venerable institution (“Join the Family,” p. 28). I recently enjoyed a meal there, and I’m happy to say this brand has lost none of its magic over the years. It’s just a place where you feel good the minute you sit down. Make a reservation now—trust us, the bigger your group, the better!
Make sure to tack on some world-class entertainment to that unforgettable meal. This week’s lineup has just too much good stu , from the return of Barry Manilow to his record-setting residency at Westgate Las Vegas (“Don’t Miss It,” p. 22) and Carlos Mencia performing in Stars of Comedy at Harrah’s Las Vegas (“Comedy Unfiltered,” p. 36 ) to the absolutely packed lineup at this year’s iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena (“Showcase of Stars,” p. 14).

Restaurant brings East Coast vibes to Las Vegas
At Junior’s in Resorts World Las Vegas, it’s a fair bet that you’ll have cheesecake, but not certain—the menu is chockfull of other goodies, from sandwiches to sundaes. Many of the dishes are made popular by the original Junior’s out of New York.
If you’re here for brunch, start with a cocktail like the classic carajillo with Liquor 43 and espresso, or a mimosa or Bellini for those bubbles.
Specialties for Junior’s breakfasts include a Nova Scotia salmon and bagel platter, smoked salmon Benedict, and steak and eggs. Order off the all-day menu for the disco fries with mozzarella and mushroom gravy.
Sandwich fans are sure to find something spectacular here (and, in fact, an entire menu section is called Spectacular Sandwiches), with names like Something Different and Something Else, brisket and sliced steak, respectively. Something Different piles the beef on potato pancakes with mushroom gravy or au jus, while Something Else heaps sliced beef on rye with lettuce and tomato.
Other sandwich options include four types of Reubens, tuna melts and chopped liver with lettuce and onion. Junior’s also touts its steakburgers,
with 10-ounce, charbroiled variations including a pastrami Swiss steakburger or a cheeseburger with sautéed onions. Entrées include Hungarian beef goulash, chicken Parmigiana and roast turkey with gravy, chestnut stuffing, mashed potato and cranberry sauce. In the mood for barbecue? Try a half-spring chicken, baby back ribs or a combo of both those items.
Then it’s on to the main event, those luscious desserts. There are 10 types of cheesecake on the menu, plus the Fresh Strawberry Cheese Pie. One of those varieties, the Raspberry Supreme Cheesecake, was introduced for National Cheesecake Day—the first new flavor from Junior’s in a year!
Black and white cookies, shakes, malts and ice cream sodas join Junior’s Mountain High Sundaes, with flavors like hot fudge, chocolate, marshmallow, strawberry and coffee—and “mountains of whipped cream.” For an even more over-the-top offering, check out the Cake Shakes. The New Yorker features a strawberry milkshake topped with a slice of that Fresh Strawberry Cheese Pie. –Nina King

Showcase of Stars
Music festival is the perfect place to be for a pop cavalcade
There is no other music festival like the iHeartRadio Music Festival. Now in its eighth year at T-Mobile Arena, the weekend event is a fast-moving, diverse showcase of contemporary pop music that feels more like a two-day macro-party than a major commitment of time and travel to an outdoor event with long lines for few portable restrooms.
This year’s lineup spans decades from the era of The Black Crowes and New Kids on the Block to current hitmakers Halsey and Shaboozey, with multiple stops on the timeline along the way. Once again hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the festival continues its tradition of surprise performances and performer collaborations.
The 2023 talent roster similarly ran the gamut from stars that got their starts in the ’80s such as Public Enemy and Lenny Kravitz to post-millennium pop chart powerhouses Kelly Clarkson and Lil Wayne. Nineties representation came in the form of Foo Fighters, TLC, Tim McGraw and Sheryl Crow, while Fall Out Boy and Thirty Seconds to Mars added arena rock energy to the mix.
The first acts added to this year’s lineup were announced in June. Big Sean, Camila Cabello, Doja Cat, Victoria Monét, Paramore, Thomas Rhett, Shaboozey, Gwen Stefani, pictured, and Keith Urban formed a formidable cavalcade of stars before Dua Lipa and Hozier signed on.
Once A$AP Rocky, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and The Weeknd came on board,
the roster was full to overflowing enough to weather any last-minute disruptions due to flight cancellations or illness. Martin’s absence would be the only one that could detract from plans for the stage production, as the circular main screen above the stage was inspired by Coldplay album art.
Coldplay is a veteran festival act, having performed at iHeart more times, including the 2011 inaugural event, than any other act. Martin and company demonstrated how fired up an audience can get with a short set, setting the room on fire with “Charlie Brown,” “Fix You” and “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall.”
That was the first of many memorable moments, from Queen making a triumphant return in 2013 with vocalist Adam Lambert to TLC paying tribute to the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes last year. Fall Out Boy donned flaming helmets for its tribute to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” during that weekend, while Travis Scott showed how one rapper and a DJ could electrify an arena-size crowd.
Martin will be coming to Vegas between Coldplay tours of Europe and Australia, while The Weeknd will be coming from a live-streamed “onenight-only” concert in São Paulo, Brazil. The talent, in other words, will be fired up. –Matt Kelemen

Fantastic and Fun
Iconic performer is back for more dates of his lively residency
There’s an extremely cool segment in Donny Osmond’s spectacular production on the Strip. He performs “We’re Having a Party,” which was a big hit for The Osmonds in the United Kingdom in 1974, but Donny adds an element that elevates a great number into an instant classic. He and his cast begin throwing beach ball-sized, glowing orbs out into the crowd, turning the moment into a rave-like scene, with audience members keeping all the balls constantly in the air. (Yes, even those with a drink in their hand!)
It’s an incredibly fun moment in a show that’s already packed with so much entertainment value, all from a man who’s spent almost his entire life in show business. He covers literally every moment of his storied career, from his days with his brothers to the hit television show he co-starred in with sister Marie and his transition to movies, television and Broadway.
You’ll see the dance moves that won him Dancing With the Stars. You’ll feel the charisma that continues to make his fans scream at every performance. And you’ll enjoy the self-deprecating sense of humor that has made him one of the most relatable performers on the planet. Wait until you see him try to perform any song from his discography on request. It’s often hysterical as he gets words wrong or just blanks completely. But as it perfectly illustrates, Donny Osmond can do no wrong. –Ken Miller

For All You Need
Retail complex rounds up a plethora of experiences
Whether you’re here for food, fashion or entertainment, you are bound to be impressed by all Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood offers.
If you’re stepping in to explore fashion, you’ll have no trouble finding more outfits than you could possibly ever wear in the 150 shops along the 1.2-mile complex. For casual wear, head to shops like Crazy Shirts, where the islands land and where all your floral fantasies can be made real. They’re more than just floral, though; there are all manner of nature-themed shirts and twill pants, plus cocoa-dyed shorts, shirts and more.
For casual footwear, try Foot Locker and House of Hoops by Foot Locker, where the hottest sneakers are ready for you. And if you don’t find it at Foot Locker, you’re sure to find it at Journeys, plus backpacks, head gear and apparel, or at Shoe Palace, to outfit the whole family.
Since you are in Las Vegas, there’s nothing wrong with matching your glamorous aura to the neon vibes of the city. Find high-end women’s fashions in shops like White House Black Market, eclectic trendy dresses in Francesca’s, men’s and women’s
apparel in separate One Monarchy locations, bold designs in Desigual and smooth men’s styles in Original Penguin.
In the center of the shopping complex is The Lost City Show, where 3D projection video turns the interior facades of Miracle Mile Shops into a visual exploration of the natural environment, with waterfalls, growing flora, lava and more. The sounds of thunder, rain and nature help bring the surreal effects to life and change the stone facades of V Theater into a living, breathing cityscape. Plus, it’s free to view, with shows every hour on the hour beginning at 10 a.m.
After combing the shops, food and drink are in order—Mexican food fans are sure to delight at both Cabo Wabo Cantina and Rosa Mexicano. Both have patios facing the Strip (so you can do a little people-watching). Other options include Flights, where drinks and eats come in threes, and Blondie’s Sports Bar & Grill for casual American fare and a plethora of beverages. Hit up Garrett Popcorn Shops for a snack on the way out— CheeseCorn rocks. –Nina King

See all your favorite musical celebrities … sort of
Madame Tussauds has long been famous for its collection of the most famous people on the planet. And at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, the recent focus has been squarely on some of the most influential musicians of our generation:
• Post Malone, pictured, replicating the look he wore for his musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live in 2022, is dressed in a black Tom Ford suede jacket, turtleneck jumper, black jeans, cowboy boots and crystallized belt. Additional details, all donated by the performer him-
self, include Chrome Hearts hoop earrings and ring. The level of detail, right down to the hair on his mole, resulted in a figure so lifelike that he said, upon seeing it, said, “I literally thought that was a person!”
• Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny’s figure is posed in front of a purple semi decked out with flames (inspired not only for the cover for El Último Tour Del Mundo, but by his outfit, hair and jewelry from the 2021 American Music Awards). Bad Bunny has other figures on display in New York and Orlando, Fla.
• Hip-hop legend Missy Elliott’s figure replicates the outfit she wore to the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. A fan of her groundbreaking album Supa Dupa Fly helped Elliott hand-embellish the figure’s glossy tracksuit, and Elliott donated a pair of Versace kicks. Twenty artists worked six months to get every detail just right. –Ken Miller

Don’t Miss It
With every Vegas performance, this entertainer is making history
A Barry Manilow concert in Las Vegas these days has reached a whole other level of excitement. Yes, the show is incredible on its face, with the master showman taking audiences through his amazing catalog and fascinating history, everything from the Brill Building to Bette Midler. But consider this added element: Every single show Manilow performs in Las Vegas now is making history. How so? Well, last year, Manilow broke a record that had stood at the property for decades: He performed
his 637th show, one more than Elvis Presley had achieved during his entire run when the property was called the International in the 1970s. Now Manilow is in rarefied air, and it’s likely whatever bar he ends up setting at the International Theater will stand for decades to come as well.
And don’t look for him to stop anytime soon. As you’ll see when he takes the stage, there’s no evidence whatsoever that this man recently turned 81. His voice and strut have lost none of their power—or ability to
get crowds on their feet and swaying back and forth to tunes like “Can’t Smile Without You,” “I Write the Songs” and “Looks Like We Made It.” It certainly doesn’t hurt that he loves the venue itself. “The Westgate is the perfect room for me,” he said. “Out of all the rooms that I’ve ever played, this is the one for me. If I was building one for myself, this is the size that I would have built.” –Ken Miller

Andres Dominguez
Proprietor makes his shop a cut above the rest
The thing about a good speakeasy is that it’s hard to find, but if you’re in the know, then it’s like you’re privy to an amazing secret. Such is the case with Speakeasy Barbershop at El Cortez. “We’re word of mouth and it’s the experience we give— it’s more than just a haircut and a shave,” says Andres Dominguez, Speakeasy Barbershop proprietor and barber. “When people leave, if they feel amazing, they’re going to tell people. It’s that snowball effect, and it went from there.”
What makes Speakeasy even more amazing is the fact that Dominguez’s grandfather first opened a barbershop
in the spot in 1974. He eventually sold it in 2005, but by 2019, Dominguez had purchased the place back. “I grew up in this barbershop,” Dominguez says. “I would come here when I was little. Grandpa would pay me a $2 bill, give me a glass bottle of Yoo-hoo and I would sweep up the floor.” That was the start of Dominguez’s career; he went on to work and apprentice in his uncle’s Las Vegas barbershop, Eastside Cutters, and carried on the family tradition when he opened Speakeasy Barbershop at El Cortez.
“We’re more than just a barber, we’re your therapist,” he says. “… The barber-

“Our shaves is what sends us over the top,” Dominguez says. “We do a straight-razor, wet shave. Very traditional. We do a facial mask, exfoliating scrub, hydrating mask, a spritz spray, facial massage.”

shop is really that place that you can come to and take off that armor, take a deep breath and let us hear your worries.”
And Dominguez is proud to be passing on the shears, so to speak, to the next generation of barbers—he’s taken three apprentices under his wing. “I’m standing on the shoulders of men who have taught me what they know and enhancing it,” he says. “My goal is to do exactly what the last generation collectively did for me—helping me help clients, showing me how to cut hair and show clients that the weight is off their shoulders while they sit in our chairs.” –Kiko Miyasato

Benihana celebrates 50 years of bringing people together over food and fun
You become part of one big family— and a big part of Vegas history—when you dine at Benihana at Westgate Las Vegas. The restaurant, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, encourages communal dining around hibachi tables that can accommodate anywhere from small families to huge reunions. And from the second you sit down to the time you depart, the experience is unlike any other, from the food and the way it’s prepared to the friends you make.
The centerpiece of the 38,000-square-foot Benihana Village (which, when you include Rikki Tiki Sushi and Silk Road Asian Bistro, make this one the largest in the world) is practically an entertainment venue, with skilled chefs whipping up your
meal in front of you, serving up New York strip steak and mushrooms (by far the most popular item) to the Benihana Trio of filet mignon, chicken breast and colossal shrimp. The two weeks of intensive training shows in every chef here; they’re quick with jokes as they deftly grill and move items around, never missing a beat.
702.732.5755
“There is nothing like the experience of Benihana at the Westgate Las Vegas,” said general manager Kit Quirante. “The consistency and quality of our food and service is why we have been so successful for over 50 years.”

Before enjoying your chef’s performance, make sure to enjoy something from the specialty cocktail menu. The Baby Blue Ocean, a lovely combination of Malibu rum, New Amsterdam pineapple vodka, sake, blue Curacao and tropical fruit juices, can be ordered as a “punch bowl” for two or more, or order something for yourself like the Rising Sun Lemon Drop, so delicious with Ketel One Citroen vodka, Cointreau, fresh lemon and PAMA pomegranate liqueur.
We also recommend sampling an appetizer, from a sushi sampler of tuna, salmon, snapper, yellowtail and shrimp nigiri to shrimp sauté served with homemade ginger sauce. If you really want to splurge, the specialties menu offers not only your choice of surf and/or turf, it also comes with flavorful onion soup, a tangy salad and fried rice. Seafood fans will want to order the Ocean Treasure, featuring lobster, scallops and shrimp.
Over its half-century of existence, this Benihana has been enjoyed by some of the biggest celebrities and sports figures in history, from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga to Mike Tyson
and Kobe Bryant. It’s also undergone many phases, from a 1992 remodel to the addition of a sushi bar in 2002. But the basic philosophy of the restaurant has never changed: Make every guest feel like family.
“It absolutely is one big family, and that’s why we have such longevity with our team members,” Quirante
said. “When you enjoy where you work and who you work with, it naturally leads to long-term commitment. And that feeling of trust extends to those who dine with us. The trust, affection and loyalty amongst our team members does not go unnoticed, and is the reason why we have so many return guests.”

Mencia tops the lineup at the ‘Stars of Comedy’ series on the Strip
If you’re in Las Vegas Sunday or Monday to see Carlos Mencia at the Stars of Comedy series and you know where to get a good bowl of menudo, feel free to pass the information along to him. Mencia makes the most of his two-day stays in a town with 24-hour dining, but a good source for the savory soup has as yet eluded him.
At least that was the case in August when Mencia posted a plea to his Instagram followers. Mencia’s bond with the fans who propelled him to fame and helped keep him there comes through clearly in his communications with them. A lot of entertainers address their audiences directly on social media, but in this case it kinda feels like you’re in the car with Mencia. His fans respond with adulation and encouragement, which helped sustain Mencia when he found himself in feuds with other comedians. He has his own circle of peers, but for the most part Mencia’s been his own man throughout his career.
The 17th of 18 children, Mencia was raised in Los Angeles by relatives after migrating from his native Honduras. Mencia caught the comedy bug after debuting at an open-mic night at The Laugh Factory. As a Honduran migrant,

he developed the performative sense of humor most comedians develop early from having an outsider’s perspective, but as a bilingual extrovert who grew up in a melting pot culture, he could appeal to wide audiences.
And he did. Mencia was like the guy at the party who commanded attention with personality and stories, except he did it onstage. He graduated to late-night talk shows by the mid-’90s, as well as hosting comedy specials for HBO and Galavision. By the 2000s, he had his own HBO specials and successful tours, and became a popular
performer on Comedy Central.
The network’s mid-2000s sketch comedy series Mind of Mencia brought him into living rooms regularly. With Dave Chappelle’s retirement from Chappelle’s Show, the spotlight was on Mencia, and for a stretch of time he was the biggest comedian to arrive on the scene since Dane Cook.
Mencia decided to discontinue his hit series while it was still on top and pursued other opportunities, but his bond with his fans remained fi rm. They want what Mencia delivers: brash, unfi ltered, no-holds-barred comedy. If Men-
cia stopped for a moment to consider if his humor was o ensive or too similar to another comedian’s, he would lose his audience. He would cease to be Carlos Mencia.
So he’s fi ne if he’s caught in the sights of another comedian’s ire, except when he’s not. He’s Carlos Mencia, after all. Criticism hurts. It a ects his family. The good thing about being Carlos Mencia, though, is he can go work o the stress in Vegas every Sunday and Monday night in front of an audience that reminds him of why he does what he does, and who he does it for.

The Venetian celebrates a quarter century of entertainment, cuisine and so much more
By Matt Kelemen
When The Venetian opened its doors 25 years ago, the Strip was a vastly di erent landscape. There was a convenience store on the street corner where The Palazzo now stands, and nearby golden-era casinos Desert Inn and Stardust had yet to be demolished. On the cusp of a $1.5

billion reinvestment and project that may be the largest and most expensive resort renovation in history, The Venetian may already look like it’s had a post-pandemic makeover.
The opening of Sphere created a conduit to the venue from The Venetian, and the corridor between The Palazzo’s main entrance and its casino floor has become a pre-concert staging area. Get stu ed on stu ed pitas before catching Dead & Company Dead Forever in fast-casual fashion at Miznon , a Mediterranean street-food concept envisioned by Israeli chef Eyal Shani and restaurateur Shahar Segal. The socially friendly eatery faces its fi ne dining counterpart HaSalon , where Shani presents an evolving menu in an atmosphere infused with Tel Aviv energy at night.
The Venetian features a bevy of impressive bars and lounges including Bar Luca , Prestige Club Lounge and Sala 118. The latter is
located across from the Grand Colonnade in the elegant Venetian Tower lobby, and was designed to evoke the spirit of Venice’s 118 islands. It o ers a three-chapter cocktail menu (apertivos, Negronis and classic cocktails) created by Venetian’s director of mixology Andrew Pollard.
For craft cocktails served in a lively environment, Juliet Cocktail Room serves up live music performed by a drummer/pianist duo and late-night DJs in a cozy, plush atmosphere. Live bands provide the soundtrack for karaoke at Rockhouse, a multienvironment venue at Grand Canal Shoppes that includes the smoker-friendly Oak Room Whiskey and Tequila Bar.
Flight Club, a sprawling, 16,000-square-foot venue on the second level of Grand Canal Shoppes, is an answered prayer for denizens of dart playing. Handsome leather banquettes, oak dartboards and a lively carousel bar conjure a British pub atmosphere in the desert, with enough space for all comers, and the brunch o ering is next-level.
Steakhouse, which began serving its famed dry-aged T-bone steaks 25 years ago. Then plan on an evening at Voltaire, a 1,000-seat lavish space that has hosted superstar guest performers including Kylie Minogue, Christina Aguilera and Jason Derulo. Newest resident Dita Von Teese, the Queen of Burlesque, begins a show there this week.

Some aspects of The Venetian have become iconic, such as the gondola rides, St. Mark’s Square and artist Laura Kimper’s LOVE installation inside the Waterfall Atrium. Tao Asian Bistro continues to serve up memorable meals after nearly 20 years, and Tao Beach Dayclub set the standard for all pool parties that came in its aftermath.
Yahoo Sportbook ’s 46-million-pixel, 1,770-square-foot LED video wall can feature up to 40 events, and there’s no substitute for Canyon Ranch Spa’s Aquavana thermal suite. Top-to-bottom room renovations are the next part of the renewal plan, an ongoing e ort that makes The Venetian worthy of revisiting.

Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease dances toward its 25th anniversary
There are some 2,000 rhinestones adorning each brassiere that the ladies of Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease wear for the opening number of the topless revue, a fact that quickly becomes moot as the eight dancers remove the sparkling bras and are individually introduced by emcee/vocalist Lorena Peril.
Several of the ravishing cast members performing on a Sunday night at Luxor are in the 2024 Fantasy calendar, including flamehaired French enchantress Gigi (March), New York City siren Abby (May) and Minnesota marvel Ashton (cover).
April’s calendar girl is onstage, too, and sizzles during the next number that calls for her to join two dancers in bed for a playful tryst. Erica saunters around the metal frame bed before making a fierce spin that immediately defines her stage persona. Each Fantasy dancer has a distinct personality that sets her apart from her seven stage sisters. Erica is a dynamo with barely contained Aries energy, whipping her long, honey-blonde, highlighted hair around with seeming abandon and exuding confidence in every move.
“There’s bite. There’s an aggressiveness, like in the best of ways,” Erica says of her approach in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine “I put so much energy and strength in my dancing, and I just love going so full out because … we’re onstage. It’s hard not to. I
want to give my best performance at all times.”
Erica says she auditioned for Fantasy and joined the cast in March after establishing her career in her native Massachusetts. Tonight, she’ll play prominent roles in existing numbers and newer ones, including one that features her singing in the show for the first time. Exuberant Abby, with her trademark blonde bob, and dark-tressed temptress Rachael will join her in bed. She’ll perform peeka-boo bit “Solo” with Ashton and Gigi, and be the only dancer of the evening to take it all off during one fleeting moment.
Like the rest of the cast, Erica makes complex choreography look effortless. Ever-present smiles
may distract from the fact that an inestimable amount of hard work is behind every performance. “It’s a lot. I learned this show in five days,” says Erica. “One thing I do pride myself in is how well I’m able to pick up choreography and remember it fast. It’s not an easy task as a dancer.”
Hours of repetition in rehearsal and review are why each step is smooth and each segment segues with ease into the next. Peril, who makes melismatic magic during a performance of “I Put a Spell on You,” is the hype mistress in charge of encouraging people to stand up and dance, and keeps things lively and fun.
The dancers complement the show with personal expression. “There’s that classic showgirl look-essencevibe onstage, and I want keep that,” says Erica. “But I also want to add my own flavor, my own essence, to all the choreo and the performances as a whole. I feel my Aries-ness—if that’s even a word—my fire, kind of comes out.”

celebrates its reunion era with a Vegas residency
Los Bukis’ Dolby Live residency shows have been an emotional a air ever since starting earlier this year. Sold-out concerts were populated by multiple generations of fans,
many of whom used the proximity of the band’s May dates to buy tickets as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts. Some could count Los Bukis’ music as the soundtrack to their earliest memories, others as triggers for reminiscing about adult romance. All were touched significantly by a band that began as a family a air.
The much-celebrated reunion was just as emotional at mid-summer performances, and this week’s dates (Sept. 18 and 20-21) mark the
last shows Los Bukis will play in the United States. Los Bukis: La Residencia Las Vegas was destined to be a three-chapter passage in the story of a musical legacy that began a half-century ago in Michoacán. Lead singer Marco Antonio Solis appears as part of the tour amidst a more extensive solo tour, but only in Las Vegas will the songs that launched him and Los Bukis to stardom be performed live.
The reunion has been well-conceived and orchestrated, capped by
a June 24 announcement that Los Bukis would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as part of the 2025 class in a ceremony (date to be announced) that also recognizes Depeche Mode, The B-52’s, Green Day, The Isley Brothers, Busta Rhymes, George Strait, Keith Urban, War and Prince. Solis, who went solo in 1996, is as revered as any of the Walk of Fame artists Los Bukis is keeping company with and receives Prince-level adulation in Mexico.
He’s the romantic flipside to Prince’s eroticism though, consistently producing perfect candlelit dinner audio ambience through the years for the band, himself and other artists. It’s safe to say he was born into the life, having demonstrated singing talent at an early age and a knack for performing by the time he could stand on a makeshift stage. Being the fifth of seven children gave him an audience from the get-go,
but it was a partnership with his cousin Joel Solis that led to Los Bukis being formed in the early ’70s.
Los Bukis (“The Kids”) released debut album Falso Amor in 1975 and had a jukebox hit with the title track. They blended Mexican music genres and pop music into their own grupero sound. Keyboards replaced violins, outfits reflected the height of ’70s fashion, and a cover of Morris Albert’s “Feelings” in Spanish telegraphed what was to come. The music of Los Bukis would evolve rapidly in terms of polished production, but it would always be sentimental and pull at the heartstrings.
Joel Solis and the rest of the members of Los Bukis carved their own legacy as Los Mismos after Marco Antonio went his own way, but by mutual agreement they did not try to re-create Los Bukis’ decades of hits in a live setting. They waited until the time was right to blend that onstage chemistry again, but the reignited flame could only burn for so long. Los Bukis is ending a legendary career with a final page, one illuminated by the soft glow generated by the love of their fans.
