Purposeful Magic

When I fi rst moved to Las Vegas in 2003 (seriously, where has the time gone?), what I was most excited about initially was the chance to see Penn & Teller on a regular basis. Way before they announced their residency at Rio Las Vegas, I was a massive fan, having seen them on late-night talk shows, Saturday Night Live and in movies over the decades. I was captivated by the contrast of Penn’s bombast and Teller’s mute, sly demeanor. Yes, the magic was always good, but it was more the way they presented themselves, the way they made you think di erently about the world, the way they could make gasp and laugh hysterically at the same time.

More than 20 years into my life in Vegas, I’ve seen the duo countless times, and I always look forward to my next visit, primarily because it’s never ever the same show twice. Most acts that have achieved the stature of Penn & Teller might think to rest on laurels, but not these two. They continue to challenge themselves and add new illusions constantly. And as they head toward their 50th year of performing together, Penn & Teller have lost none of their, for lack of a better word, magic (“Making Believe,” p. 32).

I could go on in this space about my P&T fandom, but there’s so much more to enjoy in this week’s issue that I would be remiss in not sharing it with you. Country superstar Kacey Musgraves comes to T-Mobile Arena (“Planetary Emotion,” p. 34), Bert Kreischer brings his unique sense of humor to Resorts World Las Vegas (“Belly Laughs,” p. 36 ), and Garth Brooks returns to his smash residency at Caesars Palace, Plus ONE (“Songs, Stories & Surprises,” p. 20).

If you’re like me, odds are you’re in town this week to see one of your favorite performers. Here’s hoping you get seats right up front!

A Month of Morsels

Restaurant group has lots of fun planned for September

The month of September is an exciting one for Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants. The company that operates more than 100 establishments nationwide has plenty of Las Vegas destinations, but two in particular are celebrating 25 years of service: Eiffel Tower Restaurant and Mon Ami Gabi, both at Paris Las Vegas.

To celebrate the occasion, Mon Ami Gabi offers a special prix fixe menu this month, including truffle baked brie, loup de mer with crispy pork belly, a duo of braised beef flat iron and tenderloin, and Hood River Cherries Jubilee for dessert. Meanwhile, Eiffel Tower Restaurant continues serving excellent French favorites like Chicken Suprême à la Savoyarde, olive oil-poached Alaskan halibut and Eiffel Tower soufflés.

As an added bonus, if you download the Lettuce Entertain You app on your phone, from now until the end of September you get to participate in the End of Summer Scratch-Off to redeem additional points for every dollar spent at Lettuce restaurants. And to really rack up those points, here are some other Lettuce Entertain You restaurants you can visit this month:

• RPM Italian at The Forum Shops at Caesars. From house-made pastas to your favorite Italian classics, this is family dining redefined.

• El Segundo Sol at FSLV—Fashion Show Las Vegas. A recent renovation gave this Mexican favorite, pictured, the vibe of Tulum, and once you have one of their classic margaritas in hand, you’ll want to spend hours here trying everything from charred octopus to pork carnitas with pickled red onion.

• Happy Camper at FSLV—Fashion Show Las Vegas. This dynamic, open-air space has little glittery disco balls hanging overhead for some serious ambience, but the food, especially pizza, shines. Enjoy pies with toppings like blackened chicken, roasted corn, prosciutto and artichoke hearts. As an added bonus, check out the Struggle Bus Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

• Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab at The Forum Shops at Caesars. This elegant spot is the perfect place to meet up with friends and family, especially when you order shareable appetizers like Madagascar shrimp and entrées like the 24-ounce dry-aged ribeye. –Ken Miller

This section of the natural wonder offers countless adventures, dining options and spiritual experiences

Odds are you’ve visited the Grand Canyon before, and odds are you’ve left feeling like you only scratched the surface of all the natural wonder has to offer. Well, there’s another option that will have you ticking lots of boxes for an outdoor adventure: Grand Canyon West , where you’ll discover great dining, attractions and a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

This 18-square-mile section of the Grand Canyon’s expanse packs so much fun into a relatively small area, but if time is an issue, there’s one must-visit destination here that towers above all the others—literally. Skywalk, a glass-bottomed bridge that forms a U-shape as it beckons you out over the edge of a steep drop down, has already hosted literally millions of visitors; make sure you join this exclusive club, as there is no substitute for that feeling of “floating” over the Grand Canyon.

From there, your options are still plentiful. Action seekers will definitely want to check out a zipline ride 500 feet above a side canyon for more than a half-mile (sorry, but you have to be at least 4 feet or taller, weigh between 90 to 275 pounds and be able to climb staircases without

assistance for this particular option). It’s not quite as spiritual as Skywalk, but it’s darn close! If ziplining is a bit too much, but you still want those great views, you can also opt for a helicopter ride.

If you’re having trouble deciding, there are plenty of package deals you can take advantage of, from the Grand Package (includes general admission to Grand Canyon West and a ticket to Skywalk) to the Grandiose Package (lunch on the banks of the Colorado River, a moderate hike to Travertine Falls and a one-day guided whitewater rafting trip).

There’s also some terrific restaurants spread throughout Grand Canyon West, including Sky View Restaurant, Guano Point Café and Diamond Creek Restaurant, which serves bananas Foster fry bread, open face hot beef on Texas toast and a 12-inch Hualapai taco.

And best of all, Grand Canyon West is all two hours from your hotel room. What are you waiting for? –Ken Miller

Better Than Breakfast

Start your day with a party at this variety show and buffet

How could you not love brunch? All of your favorite mid-morning eats, mimosas and great company make it just about the best meal of the day, and at Beyond Brunch at The Wall inside AREA15, brunch gets even better with a variety show element that will have you both mesmerized and guffawing from the moment it begins to the time the curtain closes.

Hosting the fabulous meal with a show is Andrew Ryan, pictured, a longtime Las Vegas-based drag artist whom you may have seen hosting Pride Family Bingo across the valley, performing at Las Vegas Pride’s Night Parade or impersonating Katy Perry and Shania Twain in Frank Marino’s Divas, Drags & Drinks.

Come ready for anything as this show packs a punch with a few acrobats, a Hula-Hoop artist, a color guard performer and a burlesque performer doing an act that I can guarantee you’ve never seen before. The best part: Every single performer in this show is incredibly likable, which makes their talents shine even brighter.

When it comes to food, expect a buffet of breakfast basics done well. Scrambled eggs with chives, sausage and bacon, waffles and potatoes O’Brien are the main event, while assorted pastries and seasonal fruit with yogurt complete the meal delightfully. Oh, and don’t forget to get the drink flight add-on to make your experience exceptionally fun. –Em Jurbala

They Will Be Loved

Best-selling pop band brings all the hits, and plenty of production values, to its smash Las Vegas residency

Maroon 5’s devotees possess a special kind of dedication. The band’s Maroon 5: The Las Vegas Residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM gives those superfans an ongoing opportunity to commune and groove in a state-ofthe-art venue that frontman Adam Levine commands with unparalleled stagecraft.

Novices who only know the hits but appreciate showmanship leave the venue having experienced one of the most dynamic live acts in 21st-century entertainment with perfectly optimized sound and floor-to-ceiling video that enables multiple sightlines from every seat.

Sometimes those video images come in the form of heat coming from Levine’s body as he prowls the sparse, uncluttered stage.

Earlier this year, the band kicked off sets with “Animals,” with Levine effortlessly hitting the song’s high notes before leading the audience in a sing-along of the falsetto-fraught chorus to “One More Night.”

Lead guitarist James Valentine has to be one of the most underappreciated musicians in popular music, especially for a band of Maroon 5’s stature. He builds foundations for hit songs by staying in the pocket and blending his parts into the arrangements, but live, he

gets to pull out all the stops when it’s his turn in the spotlight, or in a medium shot that reveals how little he’s aged since the band hit the big time with “This Love.”

That song came early in sets as did the first of Levine’s costume changes, some of which are the subject of much discussion. At least the green mesh tank top he wore during a crackling cover of Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover” was, but what was unquestionable was his own prowess on guitar. Although his voice is distinct and instantly identifiable, he jams with effortless fretwork that would impress any musician in the house.

The hits come one after another, from “Harder to Breathe” and “Maps” to “Moves Like Jagger.” Projections of blue skies and nighttime traffic back the band for the sweetness and light of “Payphone,” while a runway allows Levine and Valentine to get up close and personal with fans during “She Will Be Loved.” Maroon 5’s long relationship with Las Vegas undoubtedly helped season them into A-class headliners that win over new fans with every performance. –Matt Kelemen Park MGM. ticketmaster.com

Songs, Stories and Surprises

Superstar guarantees a unique experience each night

There’s an element of unpredictability to Garth Brooks’ Plus ONE. Even if you’ve been numerous times, odds are you had a different story to tell your jealous friends each time. But, just like Brooks himself, the show has an easy-going, free-flowing style, one where the next song you hear might very well depend on Brooks’ mood that night. And the result has been one of the hottest tickets on the entire Strip. Brooks made his mark in grand fashion on opening night in 2023, when,

instead of launching into his catalog, he performed a two-song sound check (Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind” and Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes”), both times to standing ovations! The fun has never stopped since, with the superstar showing his amazing range as a singer, songwriter, storyteller and even comedian. Not only will you hear hits like “Rodeo,” “She’s Every Woman” and “Much Too Young (to Feel This Damn Old”), you’ll hear the story behind it. You’ll

feel a connection to your favorite songs like never before—and to Brooks himself. And yes, you will laugh plenty! Brooks loves poking fun at his image, and mixing up lyrics to some of the covers he does to personalize the evening for everyone. And best of all? You might see a guest appearance! Who? Let’s just say it’s … unpredictable. –Ken Miller

A Fun First Year

Vibrant restaurant celebrates anniversary in Vegas

When HaSalon quietly opened last summer at The Venetian, it wasn’t long before it garnered fans eager to dine at the Mediterranean cuisine hot spot by Shahar Segal and Eyal Shani. Since then, it’s served thousands, with patrons lapping up the atmosphere.

Shani welcomed the grand opening last year with a huge party. And earlier this September, the restaurant celebrated its first anniversary, with executive chef of HaSalon in Las Vegas Ivan Villasana presiding over

an omakase-style tasting dinner with many of the venue’s best dishes.

“Celebrating our first year in Las Vegas is a testament to the magic and the thrill of indulgence that this city embodies,” said chef Eyal in a release. “Our goal has always been to create not just a dining experience but a euphoric escape where every guest can lose themselves in the enchantment of the night.”

Villasana will also host future dinners, so check for those on your

return trips to Vegas. But for this trip, try the Potato Full of Herself, a twice-baked masterpiece topped with Osetra caviar, and a butterflied grilled branzino—for 2 humans, according to the incredibly inventive “sketchbook” menu. The Spirit World

Bar, restaurant and retail store is a unique experience

Lovers of fine wines, spirits and foods should make Wally’s Wine & Spirits at Resorts World Las Vegas a must-visit on their itinerary. This beautifully designed destination offers guests a multitude of experiences under one roof—part luxury wine and spirits retailer, part restaurant and bar, and part gourmet deli counter.

We decided to explore the wine and spirit side of Wally’s world for the reader. Since the brand was established in Southern California, it has a huge celebrity connection, and that translates over to the Las Vegas location by way of specialty cocktails. Two popular picks celebrate Las Vegas residents: 1.) The first cocktail is a tribute to longtime local Guy Fieri and longtime Vegas visitor Sammy Hagar, who teamed up to make Santo Tequila. You’ll find Santo reposado in the Yuzu Amazing, a riff on the classic whiskey sour. It’s mixed with yuzu and egg white and gives off a hint of oaky flavoring; 2.) The second cocktail is an ode to new Vegas resident Mark Wahlberg. Using the actor’s new tequila, Flecha Azul, the Albahaca cocktail mixes in ancho chili, basil, aloe vera and grapefruit bitters. There is also the house Old Fashioned, made with Brother’s Bond bourbon from

actor Ian Somerhalder, and a mezcal margarita made with Dos Hombres mezcal from actors Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston.

Wally’s also takes favorite classic cocktails and adds its own little twist with delicious results. Try The Negroni

with Roku gin, aloe vera liquer, Campari, Antica red vermouth and lavender bitters or the Japanese Mule with Suntory Toki whiskey, house-made ginger beer and Angostura bitters.

On the retail side, to get an idea of the special bottles that line Wally’s shelves,

there is an impressive lineup of rare and special finds, some with eye-popping price tags. The first is a very rare, very in-demand and very limited-made 1989 Petrus, a 100% merlot from the Pomerol estate in France (price available on request). For a cool $40 grand, check out the bottle of 2020 Domaine

Tips/Insider Knowledge

Check out the collection inside the walk-in vault, kept at 58 degrees. Rare and vintage bottles make up 25% of the bottles for sale; the wine to spirits ratio is about 70/30. Wally’s also works on consignment, which enables the brand to source incredibly rare finds from coveted collections.

Stop by the gourmet deli counter and select from high-end meats and cheeses to make your own charcuterie board. Choose from decadent meats from Italy and mouthwatering cheeses from France and the U.S.

If you want to explore Wally’s collection of bourbons, vodkas, whiskies, tequilas and more, simply ask your server to put together a flight of 1-ounce pours.

On the restaurant side, Wally’s is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

de la Romanée-Conti. Another grand bottle from the same vineyard is the excellent vintage and extremely rare 1995 La Tâche, for a cool $12,000. A high-quality, textbook example of a great 100 percent chardonnay is the 2019 Le Montrachet Grand Cru from Remoissenet vineyard. And what would

a lineup be without a pick from one of the most popular champagne brands in the world, Veuve Clicquot? The 1990 La Grande Dame, a top-10 champagne, is rarely released and considered to be one of the most classic vintages of the 20th century.

Moving on to spirits, find a very rare, highly sought-after bottle of G4 Reposado de Madera Dia de Muertos tequila, loved for its slightly higher 84 proof and additive-free recipe. Throw down some serious dough, $30,000, for the single malt 1958 Shirakawa Japanese whiskey, another rare find. For a more reasonable price of around $600, The Boss Hog X Commandments whiskey from WhistlePig is a great find at Wally’s since it’s rare and super hard to find on the open market.

The wine and spirits collections at Wally’s goes on and on ... and on. But perusing all the bottles lined across all the walls inside Wally’s is a truly fascinating and fun adventure. –Kiko Miyasato

From the second you enter, you realize just how special this restaurant is. It’s instantly calming, with dark woods and elegant furnishings. A bar to your right beckons you to have a drink and some conversation before heading to your table.

The steak selections here are all spectacular, but none quite so spectacular as the massive tomahawk, more than enough for at least two people and the reason Instagram was invented. The filet Rossini is a revelation, filet mignon served with foie gras and Madeira wine sauce. Desserts here are the perfect ending to a perfect meal. The warm chocolate lava cake is decadent with vanilla ice cream, a raspberry coulis and fresh berries, while the Tahitian vanilla crème brûlée will have all eyes darting toward your table, as it’s brought fully afire. Vegas Dream
Tomahawk

The two magicians found they had a similar work ethic as well as yin-yang chemistry, with extrovert Jillette handling the juggling and fire-breathing aspects while Teller’s voiceless presentations range from serene sequences to more macabre pastures of prestidigitation. There could be blood involved, a saxophone causing a tissue to dance in the air or a school of goldfish materializing out of nowhere. Jillette’s instantly recognizable voice was most effective at explaining the more elaborate contraptions that relied on Teller’s physicality and ability to escape situations with death-defying d exterity. The ’70s had been about Doug Henning’s The Magic Show on Broadway and David Copperfield introducing great escapes and illusions to television audiences. Penn & Teller were embraced by post-punk culture, pushing boundaries in the ’80s onstage and onscreen at a time of conformity and compliance in society. Penn was big and brash. Teller’s silence suggested secret knowledge. They became an off-Broadway sensation and were embraced by New York’s culturati. Appearances on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman made them household names, but it was their debut at the Rio Las Vegas in 2001 (they began their residency

It has been 49 years since Raymond Joseph Teller met Penn Fraser Jillette and formed a magical bond that has endured Penn & Teller head toward their 50th anniversary with no plans to hit the brakes

in 2002) that made them a Las Vegas institution . Now they are preparing for their biggest trick yet: how to observe and celebrate their golden anniversary. It’s probably something they think of as they play select dates away from Vegas then come back and hit the workshop to fi ne-tune a few gimmicks, build out new stage design and lay the groundwork for the next great trick.

through decades as a major Las Vegas entertainment draw. One reason for their durability is they never stop creating new illusions and refi ning traditional ones. They would probably hold the record, if an authority existed that kept track of such things, for most tricks introduced to audiences on Vegas stages. Penn & Teller may hold the record for developing the most new tricks, period. Their longevity is inspiring. Back and quadruple bypass surgeries could not slow Teller down for long. Jillette survived the amputation of his distinctive long hair and shed excess weight from his 6-foot-6-inch frame. The edgy performers who revolutionized the magic industry in the early ’80s are now distinguished gentlemen who cultivate the next generations of illusionists on their long-running CW series, Penn & Teller: Fool Us . That series completed the fi lming of its latest season on July 30 in the same theater that serves as Penn and Teller’s Las Vegas performance venue, where Teller maintains the nonspeaking persona he originated as a solo act dodging sprays of beer foam at frat parties. A pivotal point was the creation of a theatrical production, Asparagus Valley Cultural Society , with a musical partner and Jillette.

Kacey

Musgraves

taps into the forces of the universe at T-Mobile

Arena

Opening track “Cardinal” pays homage to Musgraves’ late friend and mentor, John Prine, with beautiful harmonies and a catchy chorus. Further down the track list you’ll find playful and relatable tunes like “Flower Child” mixed with more spiritual songs like “Jade Green.” Concluding with the tender track “Irish Goodbye,” the whole album has an air of moving on while maintaining reflection on the past.

The transition from scorching summer heat to beautiful fall weather is something to be cherished here in the desert. It’s a time of warm breezes, cool evenings and early sunsets, perfect for listening to vibey pop-country and folk-influenced acoustics. You know, the kind of music that’s still slightly upbeat and fun, but softer than the songs of the summer.

None other than Kacey Musgraves has mastered such tunes, and the superstar comes just as the summer heat gives way to the coolness of spring, bringing her light and airy vocals to T-Mobile Arena for a one-night-only stop on her Deeper Well World Tour

The tour’s namesake album and song, “Deeper Well,” displays everything fans love about the artist’s music with lots of ethereal energy as Musgraves explores her understanding of the universe upon her Saturn return. For those who may not know, a Saturn return symbolizes an astrological turning point in a person’s life that occurs when the sixth planet is once again in the position that it was at the time of their birth. This is typically a period of self-discovery and reevaluation that occurs from ages 27-30. Now 36, the singer recounts the lessons she learned through this era of her life.

Many of the songs on the Deeper Well album fall short of being three minutes long, something that has left some fans wanting more of their favorites. But the briefness of numbers like “Heart of the Woods” and “Nothing to be Scared Of” o ers refreshing reprieve from longer, slower-paced melodies like “Moving Out” and conveys the fleeting nature of the touching moments described in each song.

Musgraves kicked o the current tour with its European leg through April and May before continuing in North America earlier this month with shows in the United States and Canada. Earlier tour dates have seen most of the Deeper Well album on the setlist intermingled with Golden Hour hits like “Butterflies” and “Rainbow” and Same Trailer Di erent Park single “Merry Go ‘Round,” among other fan favorites like Star-Crossed ’s “Breadwinner.”

Busy touring schedule aside, the songstress still made time to surprise fans this summer. During last month’s Outside Lands music festival, she joined fellow pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter onstage to sing Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.” The vocalist also made an unexpected appearance earlier this year in Nashville during a stop of fellow country artist Zach Bryan’s The Quittin Time Tour to perform duet “I Remember Everything.” With a clear propensity to be unpredictable, who knows what the songbird has planned for Vegas?

Bert Kreischer turns too much information into signature stand-up

Bert Kreischer is a legend in his own mind, so it’s a good thing he has a documented history to back up the personal mythology. Active comedy fans know Kreischer was the subject of a Rolling Stone story during his college days that determined his destiny. Casual fans recognize the bearded, bear-sized, often-shirtless extrovert due to his relentless pace of starring in specials, podcasting and generally drawing attention to himself.

Kreischer’s fans eat it up. While often falling in the crosshairs of online comedy critics for his excesses (drinking, selfreferencing, emitting high-pitched squeals when he’s excited), his audiences fully embrace their hero from the moment he steps onstage and bares his burliness. Kreischer knows it, but he never phones in his act. Foes have to admit he’s a force of nature and a wild success in the contemporary comedy universe.

“Wilder Success” might have been a good headline for a story about him earlier in his career, as the 1997 article about Florida State University’s party scene focused on Kreischer and wound up inspiring a 2002 movie. National Lampoon’s Van Wilder was a hit at the box office, made Ryan Reynolds a star and gave the Alpha Tau Omega brother a leg up when he embarked on a stand-up career.

With or without a film inspired by his college days, Kreischer’s great skill that made him popular at FSU and with comedy crowds is his ability to tell stories. His onstage persona shares traits with Tom

Segura’s co-host on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, but performing solo is different than interacting with peers in Joe Rogan’s circle of influence.

Last year, Netflix released his fourth special, Bert Kreischer: Razzle Dazzle. Like the name of his most famous bit, “The Machine,” he’s like the endlessly energetic guy at the keg party who holds everyone’s attention with his stories, except on a massive scale. Nowadays he regales with tales of family, having an outspoken spouse (LeeAnn Kreischer’s own Wife of the Party podcast) and a daughter who’s becoming a co-conspirator in mischief-making.

It seemed for a minute there like the Rogansphere was waiting for Kreischer to burn himself out, as he faced skepticism from peers about the potential of his post-pandemic commitment to working out to balance out his beer consumption. Kreischer insists he feels great, and was on point when he filmed Razzle Dazzle before audiences in Omaha. Kreischer was performing in arenas by the time of his last Las Vegas appearance in July 2023. Now he’s making connections at Resorts World Las Vegas with his first back-to-back headlining dates in Vegas, Bert Kreischer: Double Down. Vegas and Kreischer have the incendiary potential of fire and gasoline, with the flame burning straight through two shows. Who knows what sleepless shenanigans Kreischer will get into before the second night?

Regardless, Kreischer will survive. He has familial obligations, a burgeoning Berty Boy Productions podcast empire, Por Osos vodka with Segura and an insatiable appetite for storytelling. He has to maintain momentum, even if he can’t keep his shirt on.
