Holidays & Hoedowns
December is a special time in Vegas. In addition to two weeks of National Finals Rodeo and its related activities, some of our most beloved entertainers perform holiday-themed shows. This issue of Las Vegas Magazine is dedicated to both!
We’re sure many of you are in town for the NFR fun at Thomas & Mack Center, but by all means, don’t miss out on some of the other country-themed activities happening around Las Vegas. We’ve rounded up plenty of parties, cocktail specials and DJ sets for you and your group (“Boot-Scootin’ Fun,” p. 24). Additionally, two of country’s hottest acts, Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson, will be performing at MGM Grand, Wilson on Dec. 14 and Johnson on Dec. 12-13 (“Country’s Cool Again,” p. 36 ).
Plenty of Strip performers and shows love to celebrate the holidays with themed shows, and Barry Manilow’s Westgate Las Vegas residency is transformed into A Very Barry Christmas this month (“Could It Be Magic,” p. 32). And Just How Hungry Are You?
Celebrity chef Bobby Flay’s French-themed eatery excels in every meal of the day
How much do we love the celebrity chef’s newest Las Vegas venture, the French-themed Brasserie B by Bobby Flay? Let us count the meals:
• Breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Monday through Friday features classics like eggs Benedict, French toast and croque monsieur and madame, as well as signature Flay additions like the Bar Americain burger, so delicious with Gruyère, American cheese and bacon. And if you do go the burger route, by all means accompany it with sides like French fries with red pepper mayonnaise for dipping or crispy potatoes sprinkled with fresh herbes de Provence.
• Brunch from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday features many of the breakfast items, but adds delights like slow-roasted salmon served with honey mustard horseradish, gnocchi gratin with wild mushrooms and Gruyère, and chicken Paillard with pickled shallots, piquillo peppers, green olives and basil.
• Lunch from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday lets you start off your experience with a prawn cocktail featuring smoked chili sauce, then move onto Vidalia onion soup with a Gruyère gratin and chicken liver mousse served
with apricot preserves and toast before finishing with prime New York steak frites accompanied with béarnaise sauce. Or you could go huge with the Tower Magnifique, a beast of a seafood collection featuring green lip mussels, black mussels, clams, oysters, king crab legs and bay scallops Sophie.
• Dinner daily from 4:30 p.m. to close invites you to enjoy appetizers like duck confit with tangerine, almonds and pomegranate and hot homemade potato chips with Roquefort cheese sauce for dipping before moving onto entrées like skate, served with smoked chili butter, capers and tarragon, black bass almondine with fresh herbes de Provence and a pan sauce, and center-cut pork chop frites, served with calvados and orange vinegar.
Lest we forget, desserts here cannot be ignored. The raspberry clafoutis has a dollop of vanilla cream, the thin apple tarte is served with ginger glace and calvados caramel, the profiteroles are smothered with a French roast coffee glace and chocolate sauce, and the dark chocolate souffle is flavored with Grand Marnier sauce. –Ken Miller

A Fabulous Fête
Queen of burlesque dazzles in showgirl spectacular
Sparkly, sophisticated and sexy, and that’s just the theater, Voltaire. It’s inside this theater that queen of burlesque Dita Von Teese stages her new show, four nights a week.
The vibe: vintage Las Vegas. The show: vintage showgirl realness. (Von Teese brought with her a talented troupe of showgirls and showboys, and even some famous faces like comedy burlesque dancer Dirty Martini.) The costuming: the real deal. (The Bob Mackie and Pete Menefee creations were used in the city’s longest running production show, Jubilee! The costumes were lent to Von Teese and her cast and are simply stunning and dazzle under the showroom spotlights). The showroom: as if it was specially built to house Von Teese’s production.
Every seat in the house provides optimal views of all that happens onstage, and thanks to a runway that leads out into the crowd, some guests get up close and personal. A cool feature, and very rare in any showroom, are chairs that swivel, so no neck-straining happening here!
The production is a cavalcade of burlesque beauty and brawn. Huge feathered fans and headdresses accent the cha-cha-cha number; pink rhinestones and cowboy hats and chaps add some sexy yee-haw
to the country number; tight black costuming, leather and whips excite during the bondage number; Dirty Martini puts on a really fun romp atop a twirling carousel horse (and the horse ain’t the only thing twirling—this lady is famous for her tassel skills); and the re-creation of some of Bettie Page’s most famous photos in one number is downright seductive.
Von Teese plays a larger role onstage in numbers like the circus act, where she serves as ringleader, the bondage number, the Liberace number and, of course, the number that is pure Von Teese—her playtime in a martini glass. The close of the show has the entire cast converge onstage in those magnificent Mackie-Menefee creations including Von Teese in the famous white, angelic, feathered headdress and wings.
A bonus of Von Teese’s show is that guests are welcome to hang out before or after to enjoy the theater’s bar, and throughout the show guests can order yummy specialty cocktails, bottle service, liquor-infused ice cream and caviar service. –Kiko Miyasato

Pasta Dreams
Have
all of your favorites at this Italian eatery
There are few styles of food that provide a satisfying meal more than Italian. Just the mention of that word evokes images of plates of pasta, large meatballs, bread baskets that empty as soon as they hit the table, and lots and lots of wine poured and shared. Westgate Las Vegas has one of the best Italian experiences in town, courtesy of Fresco Italiano
Share fabulous appetizers, including calamari served with Calabrian chilis, garlic aioli and marinara sauce, meatballs made with slow-braised beef, pork and
veal and served with basil ricotta, Grana Padano and marinara, and a bruschetta burrata board featuring fig preserves, marinated tomatoes and basil pesto. From pizzas and pastas to mains like chicken Parmesan and grilled salmon, there are simply no wrong choices here. Everything at Fresco Italiano is made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and they all pair wonderfully with sides ranging from Brussels sprouts and roasted mushrooms, flavored with garlic and herbs, to grilled asparagus, served
with charred lemon, and sauteed spinach, served with garlic and chilis.
Don’t forget dessert! We personally love the ricotta cheesecake, which benefits from the addition of orange and Chantilly cream, but we certainly couldn’t blame you for ordering the affogato, a combo of vanilla gelato, Nutella, chocolate ganache, candied hazelnuts and espresso. –Ken Miller

When You Want It All
Eatery creates Japanese dishes with a modern touch
Hanging out with friends (or even family) over a delicious meal is one of the prime pleasures in life, and at Kusa Nori, a modern Asian bistro, you’ll find that feeling enhanced by both the food and ambience. The decor is fun and fresh, with giant sea creatures swimming over the main dining area and across the walls, as well as an intimate sushi bar and a welcoming bar with couches beckoning you to hang out.
During happy hour from 4-5:30 p.m. daily, that bar also welcomes you in with specially priced cocktails like the Honeydew List, where Ciroc Honey Melon vodka mingles with Khee soju, cantaloupe syrup and the flavors of honeydew and lemon. Bar bites here are especially satisfying, offering choices like blue fin tuna tartare, wagyu gyoza and Jidori chicken karaage in addition to several handrolls and robataki. It’s the perfect precursor to a concert or a night of gaming.
A wider list of sushi and sashimi awaits you during dinner, like the 3000 LVBLVD roll, which features yuzu Kewpie snow crab and togarashi tataki salmon, and the Battleborn roll, an unusual bite with unagi and torched fluke. If you
are more into sashimi and nigiri, you may want to try the cunningly named Yoshi’s Cube, which includes chu toro, tuna, hamachi, kanpachi, salmon, tamago and avocado. That’s sure to pull envious glances. Other seafood options include the Shigoku oysters, perfect bites to share.
If you choose to order robataki, offerings here include jumbo tiger shrimp, the tsukune chicken meatballs, freshwater eel, kalbi beef and more. The restaurant also has whole Peking duck if your whole crew is feeling it, or dim sum with black pearl shrimp har gow and foie gras shu mai.
Entrées will suit a range of tastes, however, with such varied dishes as pork loin, chicken panang with Thai eggplant, misoyaki black cod crusted with wakame arare, and Blackhawk wagyu filet with wasabi potato purée. For real beef lovers, the “Wagyu Beef Theory” area of the menu offers intense bites such as the A5 Japanese wagyu striploin, Tokushima Gold, available by the ounce, and a wagyu shabu-shabu, with plenty of accompaniments. –Nina King

Savor These Flavors
Step into a world of flavor when you stop by Spirits & Spice in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian. The beverage boutique carries all kinds of unique liquors and beers, but also has a wall of infused olive oils, nut and seed oils, balsamics and handmade spice mixtures.
Find everything from full bottles of hard-to-find and flavored whiskeys, tequilas, vodkas and so much more or shop for carry-on friendly mini bottle sets. Right now, get your holiday shopping done with exclusive gift collections like
the Christmas set, which comes with chocolate peppermint cream liqueur, plum good liqueur, and butterscotch cream liqueur. If you’d rather gift some non-alcoholic flavors, consider the kitchen staples set that comes with an eight-bottle variety of oils and vinegars and a trio of salts.
The best part? You can taste everything before you buy! Each retail associate is incredibly knowledgeable on the products offered and will not only get you a sample of anything they sell,
but may be able to guide you to products you’ll love. If you’re extra-pleasant, they may even share a couple recipes they’ve concocted on their own.
Not to mention this storefront sits right at the Strip entrance to the Grand Canal Shoppes, which makes it easy to find and a perfect place to pause if you’re planning to walk the Strip—just make it toward the end of your walk since you’ll have quite the haul. –Em Jurbala

Wilson Barrera
With guidance and support, bartender finds great success
Wilson Barrera is exactly where he was meant to be. For a decade he worked at Palms as a food runner, busser, lifeguard and bar back. “I would always run into Barry (Dakake) from N9NE Steakhouse; we crossed paths many times and I got to know him,” Barrera says. “Now I’m a bartender, my first bartending job, at his restaurant. Ever since I started I’ve been chopping at it and making the moves.”
Barrera has been with Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino since its doors opened, and he says he
has found his dream job. “I’m here for the long run; these guys know it.”
Barrera has mad love for Dakake and the other owners of Barry’s. “They’ve come up in the industry themselves,” he says. “They guide us—guidance is a big thing. They have other projects that they’re working on and told me about and said, ‘I’m their guy.’ So I’m all in. They’re not just my bosses, they’re mentors and they’re friends.”
And, under their tutelage Barrera is thriving. He’s revamped the menu, with
One of Barrera’s recent cocktail creations is the L-O-V-E. It’s a mix of Grey Goose Essences strawberry and lemongrass vodka, lychee syrup, Aperol, lime juice and egg whites. The brush of raspberry compote along the outside of the glass makes this cocktail over-thetop delicious. –KM
a goal to make the bar one of the top 50 in the country. “Bartending called out to me,” he says, when talking about his early career. “… (I’m) always striving to do better, be better. I wake up and think about cocktails.” It’s about the service, too, says Barrera, that’s also a big part of being a great bartender.
“I make people feel comfortable,” he says. “You smile, make them feel at home, make them want to come back. Make them feel like royalty—that’s the type of energy we give.” –Kiko Miyasato
Benefit Order the espresso martini . “I promise it’ll be the best one you’ve ever had—it’s all about the froth,” Barrera says.
Bazaar Mar brings Spanish-influenced seafood dishes to the Las Vegas Strip
When you think about the José Andrés Group, you may be inclined to think more of meat than any other type of food. But that wouldn’t give you the fullness of the food and hospitality group’s o erings, which stretch from Bazaar Meats in several cities to the recently opened Bazaar Mar in The Shops at Crystals at Aria, many of which celebrate the chef’s Spanish roots.
In The Shops at Crystals, you’ll actually find two José Andrés o erings, and you may want to schedule a long drinks-and-dinner experience to take full advantage of the serendipitous location. Bar Centro sits on a landing between the ground floor and the second-floor Bazaar Mar, and beckons you into a lively space with a pergola overhead.
You can get drinks and food here all day, and at night the cocktail

menu features a roster of items like the Cross-Eyed Mary, a marvelous creation of Appleton Estate rare blend rum, passion fruit, absinthe, honey, lemon and ginger, capped by flu y passion fruit. In addition to signature items, you’ll find a range of
Spanish beer, wines and spirit, and plenty of local varieties of those as well. If you’re looking for a nonalcoholic option, try the Emerald Coin, with Seedlip 42 Grove nonalcoholic spirit, with the fresh flavor of lemongrass accompanied by honeydew, lime, celery and lemongrass.
Upstairs at Bazaar Mar, finish that o , then grab another, like the The Modifier, a strong beverage with Avuá Amburana cachaça, amaro Montenegro, Licor 43, sherry and chocolate bitters. You’ll want to make sure to experience the river trout cone, a tiny bit with Smoke in Chimneys trout, preserved Meyer
lemon and dill. (A savory cone, re-
gardless of filling, is a staple at many Andrés restaurants.) Another classic is The Jamón Experience, where you’ll taste jamón Ibérica, the acornfed black-footed Spanish pig that’s well-known in Bazaar’s venues.
Other great small plates and snacks include the kueh pai ti, tiny dumplings with a filling of amaebi shrimp, peanuts and chili sauce.
Marinated “Ferran Adriá” liquid olives come served with four traditional manzanilla green olives. It’s so satisfying to slurp up the briny green globules. And “Honey, I Shrunk the Elote” serves you a few baby corns on a stick, with cotija cheese,
popcorn powder and Tajin. They are
so cute and so very tasty.
If you choose one of Bazaar Mar’s tasting menus, you’ll get a sampling of many of the best from the menu, like the super-fragrant Maine lobster
croquettes, with extra seafood kick delivered by the addition of shrimp. The tomato and wakame salad features heirloom baby tomatoes, pearl onions and a kombu sesame dressing.
The woodfire-grilled Ora King salmon is served with roe and lemon air, while pollo al ajillo present chicken thighs plus wilted spinach with apples raisins and pine nuts.
Round that o with desserts like the Key Lime Beach, a treasure chest of a dish that cunningly arranges key lime mousse and lime air with a graham cracker “sand.”

The Modifi er
’Twas the weeks before Christmas in the city of Vegas/ Where one Barry Manilow found it quite advantageous/ To perform his annual holiday show/ At the Westgate Las Vegas (Elvis once played there, you know),
The stockings were hung by the stagehands with care/ Preparing for Fanilows who soon would be there/ Audiences nestled all snug in their seats/ Taking photos for Instagram, TikTok and tweets.
The singers were warmed up, the band well-rehearsed/ Everyone knew every chorus, introduction and verse/ Then all through the theater there arose such a clamor/ Manilow took the stage in his a able manner/ He proceeded to welcome his guests with a song/ And the Very Barry Christmas extravaganza was on.
Fanilows know Manilow loves Christmas. He’s starred in television specials, recorded multiple albums of holiday music and last year released a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Manilow’s family did not actually deck the halls in December while he was growing up, but he could relate to good tidings and great joy.
Manilow has released three Christmas albums since 1990. The first, Because It’s Christmas, was the best-selling holiday album of that year and eventually went platinum. He conjures chestnuts roasting on an open fire on opening track “The Christmas Song” and enlists vocal trio Expose to evoke The Andrews Sisters in a swinging version of “Jingle Bells.”
“Silent Night,” “The First Noël,” “Joy to the World” and Handel’s “Messiah” get the Manilow treatment, some in a traditional manner and others as part of medleys blended with original compositions and jazzy atmosphere. It was a stylistic direction he would explore further with 2007’s In the Swing of Christmas, which kicks o with an a cappella version of “Silver Bells” replete with stirring vocal harmonies.
For a traditional collection of carols where Manilow’s voice is front and center from beginning to end, 2002’s A Christmas Gift of Love is an excellent option. Opening with a nostalgia-producing “Winter Wonderland,” Manilow puts maximum exuberance into a “Happy Holiday/White Christmas” arrangement followed by a horn-enhanced “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays.”
Manilow’s kicked o 2023 seasonal shows with “Happy Holiday/White Christmas” and

proceeded to mix his hits with Christmas favorites such as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Jingle Bells” and “My Favorite Things.” One show at the Westgate Las Vegas became an NBC television special last year that was broadcast Dec. 11.
Whether the special is made available for streaming this year remains to be seen, but Manilow will perform his special sets at the International Theater through Dec. 14. Meanwhile his latest album, a re-release of 1982’s Barry Live in Britain, consists of songs recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Manilow played the last show of his final European tour at the London Palladium June 9. He has no plans to stop performing at his Vegas residency, so Fanilows can look forward to being all together for many holidays to come, and have themselves a very Barry Christmas now. 5+, westgateresorts.com
The adults-only ROUGE excels as a tribute to the human body
By Em Jurbala
What show o ers the perfect balance between sidesplitting comedy, impressive variety acts and human sexuality? The clear answer is none other than ROUGE, a high-energy co-ed revue featuring strong men, acrobats and so much more–all presented by the hilarious Dr. Libido and Nurse Naughty, who have a few tricks up their sleeves.
“We tried to take a genre that maybe, sometimes, is not treated or accepted in an artistic way and we wanted to … say that a sexy show can be artistic,” ROUGE director Hanoch Rosènn told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive
interview. “I tried to do it like poetry; a (tribute) to the human body and to human love, and to treat it all with humor and with all kinds of ideas and approach. The main idea is that it will touch the normal person whoever (they are). Whoever has this kind of fantasy or this kind of memory or something like that … I really tried to concentrate and to have it for everybody; for men, for women, for gays, for lesbians, for everybody. Everybody will come there and find something there that they can identify with or can laugh about.”
Because of the show’s co-ed
nature (and the dynamics that come along with it), it would be hard to leave this show without seeing something you can identify with. There’s a wealth of representation in this show, all done beautifully. One moment you’ll be watching a pair of phenomenal aerialists swinging in sync across the stage, the next you’ll be giggling at a particularly cheeky French Revolution-themed number, then you’ll be rocking out with some crazy horses and their seductive handler.
“It didn’t matter to me so much about the nudity,” Rosènn said. “It is a topless show, that’s true, but for me the biggest compliment is when people say, ‘We didn’t feel that they were topless.’ I wanted it to be like art.”
Each and every act in ROUGE features some supremely talented performers. When the trio of strongmen take the stage, you’ll have to pick your jaw up o the floor with each new pose they pull
o . Fast-paced dance numbers provide plenty of energy in between slow, sultry acts, like a champagne glass performance set to Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman,” to ensure the show never drags.
Also bringing so much life to the show are the comedic co-hosts, played by Zion and Poppy Martyn, quipping with the crowd before pulling out an Icarian Games routine of their own—Zion uses his feet to toss Poppy into the air in a thrilling feat of strength, coordination and chemistry.
“I remember, when I was 17 years old and I went to Italy to see the statue of David … and we were standing in front of this statue (for), I think, like, 30 minutes without speaking because it’s so amazing to see this perfection … it’s unbelievable. The last thing you think about is that he’s naked. It’s art. So that’s what I was trying to do in the show,” Rosènn said.
It was a good night to be Cody Johnson or Lainey Wilson , headliners of respective solo concerts on the Strip during the climactic fi nal dates of NFR, at last month’s CMA Awards. Johnson’s Leather won album of the year while Wilson debuted as a host, demonstrating good chemistry with veteran emcees Peyton Manning and Luke Bryan before being named Female Vocalist of the Year and winning Music Video of the Year for “Wildflowers and Wild Horses.”
The song from her latest album Whirlwind lends its title to her onenight-only show Saturday in Vegas with openers Tracy Lawrence and Mae Estes. Details of what exactly this will entail are scarce, but judging from the immersive campfi re-and-stars atmosphere created for her performance of “4x4xU” at the CMAs, it will have a thematic element not present or possible during this year’s Country’s Cool Again Tour.
Wilson and Johnson are at the forefront of making traditionalist country cool again. This was Wilson’s third consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year win and second Music Video of the Year honor after winning in 2023 for her collaboration with HARDY, “Wait in the Truck.” Whirlwind, which reached No. 3 on Billboard ’s Country Album charts, is in competition for a Grammy with latest e orts from Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Post Malone and Beyoncé.

She’ll have to wait until February to find out if she won her second Grammy after scoring last year with Bell Bottom Country, but until then the singer can drive on Lainey Wilson Highway when she visits her hometown of Baskin after a stretch of Louisiana Highway 15 was named for her last month.
Both Johnson and Wilson were born in boots on humble ground, to borrow the opening line from Wilson’s “Country’s Cool Again,” but Johnson’s feet are planted firmly in rodeo life. His commitment comes through strong in 2021 documentary Dear Rodeo: The Cody Johnson Story, although he describes finding music first through both church and the piano playing of his father.
Bull riding fed his appetite for competition before he started his first band in the mid-2000s. “When we’re in the game, I’m here to win,” he said in a recent interview with Apple Music’s
Kelleigh Bannen. “I’m here to be the best, and I’m here to dominate.”
Domination now comes in the form of giving his all in concerts backed by a formidable band including multi-instrumentalist Jody Bartula, lead guitarist Jake Mears, steel guitarist Harrison Yount, bassist Joey Pruski and drummer Miles Stone. Their prowess is equal to Johnson’s passion, which channels both George Strait and George Jones.
Johnson and company just sold out their first stadium with a concert in Arlington, Texas, setting the stage for future tours where “Dirt Cheap” and “The Painter” from Leather will likely be permanent parts of his sets. Johnson’s been on a rocket ride since his major label debut, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, reached No. 1 on Billboard ’s Hot Country Albums chart in February 2019. Between he and Wilson, the future of country music is in good hands.

Ten years later, High Roller remains a quintessential Strip experience
Prior to 2014, there were a few favored places on the Strip that enabled highaltitude views of Las Vegas. Whether at a spinning restaurant on the north Strip, a plush lounge atop a tall resort on the south Strip, or the Eiffel Tower replica that rises above Paris Las Vegas, vistas were available without a reservation. Then came High Roller.
The observation wheel was assembled at the east end of The Linq Promenade in 2014 and became instantly iconic. Pod-like passenger cabins rose slowly in a 30-minute, 360-degree journey that revealed Vegas incrementally. The rooftop of the Flamingo, the skylines and ever-present construction cranes on the north end of Las Vegas Boulevard, familiar fountains and the forest-covered mountains beneath the western horizon in the distance all came into view in a way never seen before.
different names. It would be five years after the wheel began turning before Jimmy Kimmel would open his comedy club at The Linq Promenade, but the destination had already become a hub for Vegas visitors and locals. Any concert at Brooklyn Bowl, any round of beers at Yard House or any sojourn to satisfy a sweet tooth at I Love Sugar could be complemented by a rotation reaching 550 feet in the air.
High Roller is a destination on its own, of course, with contrasting experiences depending on whether a round-trip is taken during the day or at night. Sunsets are spectacular, while night rides rise above a neon wonderland that now includes the high-tech architectural marvel Sphere, visible by gazing in a northeast direction from a perch in a pod.
It’s the same ride every visit, but views change with the evolution of the city. There was no annual Formula 1 race in Vegas 10 years ago, and the idea of U2 and the Eagles having Las Vegas residencies may have seemed far-fetched. Then again, the idea of a 550-foot-tall observation wheel in the middle of the Strip may have seemed like a far-fetched idea at one time. Now it’s reality. 855.234.7469
The views remain incomparable, and the cityscape has evolved quite a bit in 10 years. There was no Allegiant Stadium, no T-Mobile Arena, no Vegas Golden Knights, no Las Vegas Raiders and no Las Vegas Aces. Downtown Las Vegas had yet to top off the tallest towers it now counts in its tourism corridor. The properties reimagined as The Linq Hotel, The Cromwell and Horseshoe Las Vegas existed in previous incarnations under
A Happy Half Hour cabin option is available for adults from noon to 5 p.m. daily, while families can download a curriculum sheet that lists fun facts to share. For example, each cabin weighs 44,000 pounds and has a diameter of 23 feet. The entire wheel weighs more than three-and-a-half tons and is reinforced by 5.3 miles of cable.
A cabin at the apex of the High Roller skyward journey is the highest place on the Strip to tie the knot. Wedding experiences include flowers and music accompanied by 2,000 LED lights after dark, with an optional Elvis minister for a classic, only-in-Sin City nuptials atmosphere.
joins the ranks of comedy stars with Vegas residencies
When Stars of Comedy debuted earlier this year at Harrah’s Las Vegas, it was with some major star power signing on, like Jeremy Piven, Paul Zerdin, Ryan Hamilton—and Carlos Mencia. Known for shows like Mind of Mencia and his podcast, The Journey, Mencia performs most Sundays and Mondays in Vegas, and spoke with Las Vegas Magazine’s Nina King about his role in the show and what he loves most about Las Vegas.
something more challenging … (I) thought that it would give me a different jolt of energy, and it has. I’ve done four shows and they’re all about 60% to 80% different.
You know, I expected at some point in my career to do this. I’ve been touring consistently ever since I started doing stand-up in 1988. To be in Vegas and have those people coming to me instead was very, very inviting. Another thing was I felt like I needed something different, something new,
When human beings are laughing, the avenue of information is open as well. And I am able to put ideas forth in my comedy, perspectives maybe, that my audience doesn’t have—point of views that they’d never thought of. I’m able to do that.
When an opportunity presents itself like this one, I’m going to enjoy it to the fullest. I’m going to give myself to it completely. One hundred percent—not 99.9 but 100%. And whenever I venture

into any endeavors, whatever they may be, I give myself 100% at that moment to that endeavor. So that I know, at the end of it, I did my best, I gave it my all, and it’s also something that really makes me happy.
Oh, hell yes! I love the fact that in Vegas, you can get a good bite anytime. Every day is Friday or Saturday, depending on which one of those you like, it’s a 24-hour city that’s awake all the time. I love that energy. I love that I can wake up at anytime and say, “Hey, let’s go do this.” OK, we can, whatever time that is. To see shows, to go see friends. Access to some of the best food in the world. Yeah, all of that stuff is just, it’s just so much fun.
I’m about to do a new special. I’m trying to figure out if I want to record it actually in the showroom (at Harrah’s Las Vegas). Because it’s convenient, it’s already there, it’s nice, It has a good feel—the stage is big. And all we would have to do is put some cameras up there. So yeah, I’m in talks with that right now. But you know what? You have no idea what to expect, because I have no idea what to expect.
Knowledge abounds at Discovering King Tut’s Tomb—The Experience
By Em Jurbala
out a heavy dose of ancient Egyptian history. Simply stop by the Great Pyramid of Las Vegas (aka Luxor) with its space-searing light beam and take a stroll through Discovering King Tut’s Tomb—The Experience
OK, so you didn’t spend your vacation funds booking a trip to Giza, Egypt, to see the royal tombs that line the banks of the Nile River. We get it—it’s kind of far and there are significantly fewer bu ets (probably), but that doesn’t mean you have to endure a whole vacation with-
Once inside, you’ll find yourself completely immersed in all things ancient Egypt, from the events leading up to the discovery of King Tut’s tomb to the daily life of this ancient civilization, including cultural traditions and burial rituals. A wealth of replicas of artifacts from inside King Tut’s tomb have been carefully crafted by Egyptian artisans employing the same methods used to create the originals. You’ll also find
kingtutvegas.com
more fun facts than you can imagine delivered via videos, slideshows and placards.
The way this attraction has been designed pretty much ensures every visitor will walk away having learned something new. One of the first experiences here puts explorers right in the shoes of Howard Carter, the archaeologist who struck gold in the Valley of Kings when he uncovered the tomb of Tutankhamen. Peer through slots in a faux stone wall to see a bit of what Howard saw as excavators worked to remove the walls that sealed this time capsule for thousands of years, or simply enjoy the educational material and transportive ambience in the space. More discoveries await around each corner. One room contains a life-sized re-creation of the multilevel sarcophagus that protected King Tut’s mummified remains, while others display everyday objects and
spiritual idols that the king would have been buried with for various purposes. Virtual displays outline the mummification process and the quality of life King Tut experienced. There are even tidbits about other prominent ancient Egyptians like Queen Nefertiti.
• Known as the Boy King, King Tut started his reign at just 8 years old.
• The Nile, the life force of Ancient Egyptian civilization, is the longest river in the world.
• Ancient Egyptians often mummified their beloved pets and buried them with their owners.
Spoiler incoming! The Ancient Egyptians believed in a journey to the afterlife, which is why they laid royalty to rest with so many of their possessions. People would be buried with items that the living thought would help guide and protect them in death, including food, wine and a Book of the Dead, a collection of spells to assist the deceased on their trip. What that means for the curious minds of today, though, is that through looking at these items you can get a fairly well-rounded sense of what was truly important to someone living in these times. So why not take some time out of your trip to learn something new and ponder life before the civilization we know today? It’s fascinating!
