New Hope Celebrates 11th Annual Pride Festival Change Is Inevitable...

2014 is proving to quite a year of change for New Hope Celebrates! From new board members to a fabulous new website and now (drum roll please...) we are proud to announce that we are bringing together our two towns by expanding the Pride Parade to kick off in Lambertville! And what a perfect year for our symbolic BRIDGE TO EQUALITY as the movement toward same sex marriage sweeps the nation! We invite you to join us on Saturday May 17th when we march through Lambertville and across the bridge to New Hope, symbolically showing how it is only a matter of time before marriage equality will cross the bridge to Pennsylvania! For the first time in history, the Annual Pride Parade, the signature event of Pride Week will kick off in Lambertville, New Jersey before marching into New Hope. The parade will begin at Lambertville City Hall and march to The Lambertville House on Bridge Street where the parade will pause briefly as Lambertville Mayor David DelVecchio performs a same sex marriage. The parade will then continue down Bridge Street and will pause again on the state line, allowing Mayor Larry Keller and other Pennsylvania politicians to join the marriage float before the parade continues into Pennsylvania, symbolically bringing marriage equality to Pennsylvania. I would like to thank all of the Board members, our volunteers, our sponsors and our partners. Without you, this festival and celebration would not be possible. Thank you Sharon Fronabarger President, NHC This Years Cover Curtisoy of Bonnie Mincu, Artist bonniemincu.com Also see: bonniemincu.com

Mission New Hope Celebrates (NHC), is a nonprofit organization focused on highlighting the history and cultural nuances of New Hope, PA while stimulating the retail, hospitality, and professional community. NHC is comprised of a Board that drives activities and events that serve the diverse LGBT populace through the creation and promotion of marketing opportunities, educational activities, and cultural events. One such event is the annual, week long PRIDE celebration held in May. Vision: NHC strives to achieve our vision whereby society is free of prejudice, discrimination and hate, within our community, and across our borders. We achieve this by promoting and producing events throughout the year that inspire, educate, commemorate and celebrate the cultural and historical diversity of our community.

Welcome to New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania I want to welcome everyone who is celebrating the11th anniversary of Gay Pride Festival in New Hope. New Hope is more than a tourist destination as a lovely river village with history, shops, theater, galleries and excellent restaurants. Our residents pride themselves on maintaining a terrific quality of life and strong sense of community while accepting diverse lifestyles. Please take the time to see what New Hope has to offer! Larry Keller, Mayor of New Hope

We are honored be the home of New Hope Celebrates! It is my pleasure and privilege, as the President of New Hope Borough Council, to welcome you to the 11th Annual, New Hope Celebrates Pride, Festival. The Pride Celebration is one of the highlight events of the year, attracting thousands of people to New Hope! Organizing an event of this magnitude is a task that requires dedication, focus and hard work. A huge “thank-you” to the committed group of volunteers, sponsors and service groups who gave freely of their time to make this week the outstanding event we have come to expect! If this is your first visit to New Hope you will find, that as a community, we recognize and care about quality of life; we are accepting, and, expect diversity among us. We welcome all and discriminate against no one. In New Hope, you are safe to be, for you dwell among people who do not tolerate segregation but actively promote equality. You may find it interesting to know New Hope has a long and eclectic history of diversification! In the 1940’s to the early 70’s, the Bucks County Playhouse became a summer theater. It was the starting point for many actors and became the venue where plays, slated for Broadway were tried out. Grace, Liza and Ella strolled our sidewalks while Redford, Matthau and Wallach could be found at the bar in the Canal House. We have been the home to political activists, renowned artists and Playwrights. We’ve a reputation for attracting the quirky and free spirited! The gay community is well established here. Abbie Hoffman lived and died here. Daniel Garber and John Folinsbee painted our landscapes. Moss Hart, Kitty Carlisle and Oscar Hammerstein called this home. Odette Myrtle held court at Chez Odette’s while Jessica Savage and Michael Finestein perished in our canal. With this history, it is only fitting that New Hope Celebrates be acknowledged as apart of the historic fabric that is New Hope! Many of you have traveled far to share this week with us! So, unpack your bags, settle in and get ready for a New Hope Pride week! Explore our shops, retrace the steps of legends, welcome the inspiration as you explore our unforgettable town... And, when the urge to return to New Hope hits you, don’t fight it. Come on back and be prepared to stay, for a very long time. Regards, Claire E. Shaw, DMD President, New Hope Borough Council

Welcome to Lambertville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey “Welcome to New Hope Celebrates -- and this year Lambertville is especially proud to be a partner in celebrating the diversity and strength of our sister communities! What makes our communities so special is that while we set aside this week for welcome everyone to our river towns, we celebrate pride every day of the year. As home to first celebration of marriage equality in New Jersey, Lambertville is especially excited to be included in this year’s parade. We hope you will walk across the bridge and experience all we have to offer!” David M. DelVecchio, Mayor of Lambertville

Many thanks to the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission for allowing NHC to use the bridge for our first Pride Parade Crossing.

Postcard of the New Hope and Lambertville Bridge. Post marked April 30, 1910.

NHC Pride Parade makes history on the 200th Anniversary of the New Hope - Lambertville Bridge. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of the bridge connecting New Hope and Lambertville. On Sept. 13, 1814, a covered wooden toll bridge opened to carry wagons, horses, livestock and pedestrians across the Delaware River. The bridge was damaged in 1841, destroyed by floods in 1903 and reopened in 1904 as the steel truss bridge now spanning the Delaware. According to the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, it was the fourth bridge built connecting Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A commemorative DVD about this historical bridge is available from New Hope Historical Society at www.newhopehs.org

An event not to me missed. An event not to be missed. The block party originated as a simple street party on the ever famous Mechanic St.and has evolved to its current location at the Bucks County Playhouse Parking Lot. on the Delaware River. It’s creators Jenn Wohl and Gerry Mason had a vision of expanding the Pride experience throughout downtown New Hope, immediately following the parade with an afternoon of music and entertainment: Then Bam! - success at first run, now in it’s 4th year it has grown by leaps and bounds and expanded to include the vendor fair in the parking lot of the Bucks County Playhouse. In true small-town epic proportion it continues to grow and become an event not to be missed, thanks to the enthusiastic attendees and the exhausting efforts of it’s creators who work tirelessly every year to bring an even bigger and better event to all NHC Pride attendees.

We will host 56 new and returing vendors in 2014 - visit www.newhopecelebrates.com and check out our vendors page for a complete listing... 12

NEW HOPE CELEBRATES & Par ty Gurlz Productions Presents...

May 17th NHC’s Annual “Rock the Block Party” & Vendor Fair - Pride 2014 Kristine W. takes center stage at New Hope’s bigest block party ever, set along the Delaware River in the Bucks County Playhouse parking lot. Joinig kristine W on stage - Dario, Josh Zuckerman & The Band, Christine Martucci, and a host of local performers: Dwayne Dunleivy, Trish Dash, Pumpkin, Cyannie Famouz, Victoria Lace and more will entertain visitors to our 11 Annual Pride Festival, show begins at 1 pm directly after the Parade and runs th

throught the day untill 6 pm - All are welcome.

In the rarified and cutting edge realm of the dance music diva – where singers have to hit and deliver notes that thrill, truly touch hearts and souls with the words they sing and compel bodies to find the mighty groove out on the dancefloor – Kristine W has proven herself an Olympian and lasting talent. And it’s only the beginning. She has scored 16 potent #1 dance hits and a record-setting string of nine consecutive #1s on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart over the past 15 years, earning Kristine third place on Billboard’s Best of 2000s Dance Club Play Artists rakings and landing this highly-musical and multitalented independent entertainer squarely within a pantheon of legends and major stars. Her new 15-track-tour de force album, aptly named New & Number Ones and released on Kristine’s own Fly Again Music label, revisits some of her past hits with new mixes and edits and offers new songs sure to also top the charts. The title of Kristine’s sizzling new international Top 10 single, “Everything That I Got,” epitomizes her total commitment to making music and entertaining, the deep appreciation she shows to her worldwide cadre of fans, and how she meets life’s challenges with all she can muster and lives to the fullest. It’s produced by and written with the red-hot UK team Bimbo Jones (aka Lee Dagger and Marc Jacobs) whose remixes include tracks for Lady Gaga, Pink and Katy Perry. Kristine met them at the Winter Music Conference dance music summit in Miami and found an immediate rapport. “They have that same kind of goofy, crazy energy like I do, and they’re passionate about music,” says Kristine. The hazel-eyed crooner is ready to take over mainstream music and he couldn’t have come at a much better time; the music industry is ready for something new and different and Josh is poised to save the day. At the age of eight he was introduced to violin, which he studied for the next five years; while Josh’s interest in music drifted to rock’n roll. After unsatisfied gigs in several cover bands, Josh decided to write his own music. Inspired by the sounds of the east coast, Josh relocated to New Jersey where he continued to compose his melodies and lyrics.

LIVE! May 17 th “Rock The Block Par ty” & The Raven - New Hope, PA.

DARIO

Pop singer Dario was only three years old when his natural vocal talent and charming personality captured adoring hearts and an audience. It was obvious that he was destined to be a sensation. The Tucson Arizona native entertained at this early age, singing and dancing to the musical stylings of Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Cheyanne. Before long he was a successful champion of local competitions and talent shows, earning him a loyal following. Independent record labels invited Dario to audition after discovering him at a “Search for Stardom” convention, catapulting the singer into an exhilarating music career. Dario’s distinctive vocals and dynamic stage presence landed his first single “Be” at number one on the Independent Sales Chart in April 2004. His follow-up single, “Lies!” as well as two full-length albums, “Dedicated,” and “The Up Side of Down,” were commercial hits. He has since toured with Destiny’s Child, KC & JoJo and other established recording artists. In 2011, the pop star wrapped a national, five-month headlining tour to promote “The Up Side of Down,” which was released to rave reviews. Dario’s solid reputation as a singular force in the industry has landed him multitudes of public appearances, including televised red-carpet events such as the Grammys and The American Music Awards. He has also graced the covers of more than 40 entertainment and lifestyle magazines. 18

BUY THE ALBUM NOW! The reality series “Dario Undiscovered” offers a revealing glimpse into the making of Dario’s fifth album, as well as his personal and professional struggles and triumphs. Collaborating with leading UK DJ Les Hemstock, Dario explored the world of dance music in “Talking Loud”. Dario explains, “I love the idea of creative musical people taking something I’ve done and making it different and new!” While Dario enjoyed the opportunity to dive into new musical territory, he remains dedicated to his roots and will be releasing a Pop and R&B follow-up album titled “Evolution” April 29th 2014, produced by David Pramik. “This is the defining record for me in my career,” Dario states. “Working on this album has been so therapeutic and emotional!” Never one to rest on past achievements; Dario is committed to giving back to the community. He works with numerous foundations that educate, research and fight to cure HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and sickle cell anemia. His favorite foundation is Building Futures Inc. (BFI), where he serves as a passionate mentor to struggling children and young adults in Los Angeles, helping them to envision their dreams and work to make them come true. In a recent interview, Dario was asked to reveal the secret to his success. His answer: “Hard work, the support of my friends and family, and of course, the loyalty of my amazing fans! Join the Celebration New Hope Celebrates Pride Parade “Bridge to Marraige Equality” to take place May 17th, 2014 Highlighting the fight for marriage equality with a marriage ceremony during parade Organizers hope for ruling on Challenge to Pennsylvania’s Marriage Ban before parade For the first time in history, the Annual NHC Pride Parade, the signature event of Pride Week, will kick off in Lambertville, New Jersey and march across the bridge in to New Hope, PA. It seems fitting to include a bridge crossing this year since the iconic New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, connecting the towns is marking its 200th anniversary of its’ opening.

Hope Celebration!” says NHC President, Sharon Fronabarger. After the marriage ceremony, the parade will then continue down Bridge Street and pause midway on the bridge (the state line) where Mayor Larry Keller, New Hope Borough Council, and other Pennsylvania politicians including Adrian Shanker (Former President of Equality Pennsylvania), Shaunessy Naughton (Candidate for Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District and Bucks County native), Kevin Strouse (Candidate for Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District ) and more to join the parade along with the marriage float as the parade continues into Pennsylvania, symbolically bringing marriage equality to Pennsylvania.

The parade theme “Bridge to Equality” will highlight the fight for marriage equality in PA and across the country. The parade will begin at Lambertville City Hall and march to The Lambertville House on Bridge Street where the parade will pause briefly as Lambertville Mayor David DelVecchio performs a marriage between a same-sex couple from Bucks County. “Our goal is to send a clear message to PA and across the nation that all loving couples should have the freedom to marry. Since the ACLU of Pennsylvania has filed a motion for summary judgment in Whitewood v. Wolf, asking the judge to rule that denying marriage to Pennsylvania’s same-sex couples is unconstitutional, I am filled with hope that marriage equality will become a reality sooner rather than later. If we are fortunate enough to have a ruling before the parade, we will truly have a New

Special guests Victoria Lace and the honorable Mayor Keller will serve as emcees for the parade at the new reviewing stand, across the street from John & Peters and next to Havana, in the heart of South Main Street. The Parade begins at 11:30am and will conclude at approximately 1pm. Parade participants include the Big Apple Corps, The Philadelphia Freedom Band, New Hope Chamber of Commerce, John & Peters, FACT of Bucks County, PFLAG, Johnson & Johnson, Animal Alliance, 94.5 WPST, The Raven, several church groups, local nonprofit organizations and many more. 25

“We can never forget the Stonewall riots that occurred 45 years ago and those who led the fight for our rights. Like the Olympics with their torch, we wave our rainbow colored flags proudly each May in honor of the LGBT civil rights movement; and as a reminder that we still are NOT all free. I am personally celebrating 30 years of being out the closet this PRIDE, but I am still looking forward to the day when all of us are free to marry world-wide. I wanted to be a part of a group that hosts a celebration of PRIDE every year, and an organization that captures the history of the LGBT community through our Retro-Scope project. And to celebrate in community who made it a safe place to come out, be ourselves, in a town that accepts and embraces diversity. says NHC Vice President Rori Katz.

County Playhouse featuring special guests Trisha Dasch, Christine Martucci, Dario, Josh Zuckerman & Kristine W. We will continue our celebration and cap off the night with a Pride Dance Party at the Raven with DJ Tracy Young and a special show from Dario. All of our events celebrate the diversity of New Hope and Lambertville.

NEW HOPE CELEBRATES

HISTORY

Retro-Scope is a web-based archive dedicated to the preservation, celebration, and sharing of New Hope, Pa’s LGBT history and living community. It is a product of New Hope Celebrates. Here, anyone can see and share memories, stories, photos, memorabilia, and more! Together we are establishing our LGBT history and preserving it forever. We invite you to peruse the collection and delight in seeing the riches of what we, as a diverse community, have been blessed: the dazzling parties, fantastic performers, beloved places and unforgettable friends. Feel proud of the artists and change-makers that came before us, those that paved the way for the freedom which we enjoy today. Plus check out the map of memorable locations – some gone but not forgotten – that have been important to our LGBT community – now on Retro-Scope preserved for all time. We hope that the gems at Retro-Scope will inspire you to keep celebrating diversity, creativity and openness, the very things that make New Hope, Pa so special. They may bring a tear to your eye, a sweet smile of remembrance and they will most certainly give you something to feel proud about. Be a part of our history by contributing your personal collection! Visit www.retro-scope.org – and enjoy our past as often as you like. 59

Welcome to Lambertville, NJ. Painting by B.F. Postel Swan Street - Lambertville N.J.

The “Bridge” symbolizes a long standing friendly symbiosis between the unique yet connected small town communities of New Hope and Lambertville, NJ. Though in different states, the towns grew up fertilized by the seeds of shared water--first the Delaware River, an important symbol of freedom from Revolutionary days, and later the man-made canals, which brought industry and prosperity to the entire Delaware Valley. While both towns evolved because of common bodies of water, each took on their own characters. When New Hope emerged as a more boisterous haven of the arts, Lambertville maintained a distinct essence of culture, developing an outstanding standard of proud, austere reverence to the past and a commitment to subtle and traditional excellence. Currently a walk down Bridge or Church Street pays awesome homage a long history, with fine antique stores, a bevy of multi-ethnic restaurants and specialized shops alongside some of the most notable “old school” as well as contemporary art galleries in the area. Determined not to be a river reflection of it’s neighbor to the west, Lambertville is the essence of individuality–not a “sister city” but more the quiet and beautiful, distinguished “first cousin”–a remarkable and memorable entity of perfection. Visit Lambertville and experience why this community has for centuries epitomized harmony and equality, while maintaining a diverse and amazingly beautiful spirit that is all it’s own.
