Celebrating Life, Diversity & Community
New Hope
Welcome to our town...
On behalf of all members of New Hope Celebrates, The Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce, New Hope Borough Council and Visit Bucks County, we welcome you to New Hope – a gem of diversity that sparkles along the Delaware River in Bucks County, PA.
Contents New Hope Lambertville Bridge - Cover photo by ffolkes Sedneff
Initially settled by the Lenape Indians, a group known for their hospitality, New Hope has long been recognized for it’s unique mix of eclectic commercial and artistic establishments, as well as its charitable and humane service organizations. Binding them all together is a veritable “stew” of different kinds of people who coexist peacefully and equally. For LGBTA individuals, New Hope is a Mecca – where discrimination and segregation are non-issues. Blessed with scenic beauty, New Hope is nestled alongside the lowlands of the Delaware River and surrounded by lush mountains, forests and lakes. Water sports abound and yet there is acreage to explore-from hillsides of horse farms and historic sights
to cozy countryside dotted with covered bridges. You can explore by foot, bicycle or car, by motorcycle, trolley or train! You will experience what folks in New Hope and Bucks County know best–that life is meant to be lived and embraced. This LGBTA guide will help you navigate through what we, the locals are so proud of, and help you discover our many attractions and treasures of our area. We ask that you patronize our loyal supporters listed throughout The Guide as they are the ones who have reached in their pockets to make this Guide and festival possible. Now exhale, open your eyes and enjoy! Your New Hope experience is about to begin!

Who is New Hope Celebrates?
New Hope Celebrates is a non-profit LGBTA tourism and marketing organization of New Hope (Bucks County) Pennsylvania. New Hope Celebrates, Bucks County’s acclaimed all volunteer LGBT marketing organization, became an award-winner on Thursday, March 29. The award, “Outstanding Multi-Day Special Event” was presented to the group by Donna Boone, director of Landmark Towns of Bucks County. At the very core of New Hope Celebrates is their extensive and dedicated volunteer corps. Year after year members of the NHC Board and membership turn out countless hours of their professional services in order to promote tourism of the area to the LGBTA populace throughout the nation. These residents do the work with out pay – instead for the sheer love of their town and the diverse people who populate it’s day-to-day life. “We are really honored to be the first gay organization ever in Bucks County to receive this award,” said Daniel Brooks, NHC founder and president. Landmark Towns of Bucks County is responsible for the revitalization and maintenance of the area’s river towns which include Bristol, Yardley, Morrisville and New Hope. New Hope’s Nevin Rae, leader of New Hope-Solebury High School’s newly formed GayStraight-Alliance and member of New Hope Celebrates, accepted the Human Rights Campaign’s award for the Youth Essay Contest at the recent HRC gala on March 24, 2012. The dinner and awards ceremony, held at the glamorous Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia, was attended by over 400 LGBTA community members including Daniel Brooks, New Hope Celebrate’s founder and president (pictured above;) Geri Delevich, HRC Federal Club member, NHC member and New Hope Borough Council member (pictured left of Nevin;) and Ryan Fuller, New Hope Celebrate’s treasurer. Pictured right of Nevin is his proud mother and environmental activist, Hope Blaythorne. Also in attendance, NHC’s Hope Smolin and New Hope Celebrate’s sponsors Sandy Wesley and Rori Katz. Celebrity guests at the Dinner Gala included NBC’s “Tonight Show” Ross Matthews, the award winning actress Maria Bello, Bucks County’s former US Congressman Patrick Murphy, and HRC’s national president, Joe Solomese. HRC--whose total membership numbers 750,000, is widely recognized as the leading LGBT legislative activist group in the US, and it’s most recent achievements, along with Congressman Murphy, have included successful lobbying for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”– a bill that banned gays from disclosure in the military.

nerp New Hope Will Host In 2013
“Plans are currently underway for NERP 2013 in New Hope. It will be a fun-filled weekend which will not only provide an opportunity for networking and learning new methods to market Pride, it will also give us an opportunity to show off the many resources we are blessed to possess.”
What’s a nerp?
and why should you care... New Hope Celebrates is proud to be a member of InterPride, which is the world’s largest association for organizers of Pride events worldwide. Many may not be aware of the value and support this association provides to its members who come from international Pride organizations. These organizations are dedicated to producing Pride events such as parades, marches, rallies, festivals, and other cultural activities organized for people identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and variations. All InterPride members are invited to meet annually at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at sites around the globe, where delegates are offered a variety of workshops and seminars to educate, share knowledge and facilitate networking. NHC has been a member of In-
terPride Region 6 for the past five years. Region 6 comprises the Northeast Region (NERP) which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington DC. Each member organization is given the opportunity to host an annual regional conference. New Hope is honored to be the host city for NERP’s 2013 conference in March, 2013. The 2012 NERP conference was held this past March in Rochester, NY and NHC was represented by delegates Sharon Fronabarger and Jennifer Wohl, who braved a blizzard to attend. They were also responsible for presenting updated information to delegates in preparation of the 2013 conference. Regional conferences provide the delegates an opportunity to network with other Pride people from their general geography, learn about ways to improve their individual festivals – 30
and having fun together! They also provide the host delegation with a tourism opportunity to showcase their town for the weekend. The regional workshops are generally filled with sessions on topics ranging from public relations and volunteer management to Pride finance and how to book entertainment. No conference would be complete without some entertainment and the Rochester team provided a lively cocktail party, bar crawl highlighting the gay bars of Rochester and a wonderful dinner event on Saturday with diverse entertainment by the Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus, The Dykes of Hazard, Kristen Becker and Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls. Standard operational business procedures included submission of nominations for regional directors, a bid presentation NERP 2014 by the Atlanta delegation, voting for the regional directors and a presentation for NERP 2013 in New Hope.
NHC’s presentation spoke to and excited delegates about the Bucks County, PA area. Although a relatively small community of approximately 2,500 residents in a one square mile space, in New Hope retail business and tourism is our industry – that’s what we do. New Hope remains the number one tourist destination in Bucks County and, in 2012, we continue to make our town even better by undergoing a revitalization effort with the return of the famed Bucks County Playhouse and the Delaware & Raritan Canal. Also highlighted at the NERP conference were the great attractions in and around New Hope – our many restaurants and bars, art galleries, shops, spas, salons and visitor’s attractions such as wine tours and Washington Crossing State Park. Also highlighted were historic transportation modes including the famed antique New Hope-Ivyland Railroad, mule barge or river ferry rides, the new Bucks County Children’s Museum and Bowman’s Wildflower Preserve. Delegates also learned that New Hope Celebrates was the recent recipient of the Landmark Towns of Bucks County award for “Outstanding Multi-Day Special Event” because of our Pride Celebration. The presentation by Wohl and Fronabarger closed by reminding the delegates that fun is a big part of life here in New Hope – “they don’t call us Vodka Valley for nothing!” Plans are currently underway for NERP 2013 in New Hope. It will be a fun-filled weekend which will not only provide an opportunity for networking and learning new methods to market Pride, it will also give us an opportunity to show off the many resources we are blessed to possess. Please get ready to “put out the welcome mat” – the Nerp-ites will be visiting March 8-10, 2013!
If you are interested in volunteering for NERP 2013, please contact Sharon Fronabarger at sfronaba@gmail.com.

Sister Cities New Hope & Key West A Proud Connection Kevin Castellanos, 17, President of the Key West High School Gay Straight Alliance
There are many similarities and connections between New Hope, PA and Key West, FL. To begin with both are diverse communities, gay travel destinations, artist meccas, and have economies based on the retail and tourism industries. A visit to either Key West or New Hope and you will soon discover warm, friendly locals that embrace diversity. Energy charged creative folks from all walks of life are drawn to both communities. It is not at all unusual to run into other “New Hope-ites” while vacationing in the Keys. Many of New Hope’s residents call Key West their second home and many Key West residents are New Hope transplants. In the late 1970’s, it was mainly the gay community from the Philadelphia/Bucks County/New Hope area that helped to rediscover the magic of Key West, aided in its rebuilding and encouraged the island to establish its preservative building code
based on one from our own Historical Society. It is through the standards set with their building code and historical preservation that Key West has been able to maintain the Historic beauty that tourists and residents enjoy. While New Hope played a role in the Revolutionary War, Key West played a larger role in Civil War history with their two important outposts of Fort Zachery Taylor and Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas. The latter is most famous for housing Dr. Samuel Mudd, convicted of conspiracy for setting the leg of John Wilkes Booth after the assassination of Lincoln. Key West has a significant Cuban influence as it is closer to Cuba than it is to Miami and many of the original residents can trace their heritage to Cuba. Prior to the Cuban revolution of 1959, there were regular ferry and airplane services between Key West and Havana. In 1982, Key West succeeded from the 34
US and formed the Conch Republic – for one day – they still celebrate their independence day every April 23rd. Key West has also been home to many artists and writers such as Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Jimmy Buffett, Calvin Klein, Shel Silverstein and Kelly McGillis. New Hope was founded by the Lenni-Lenape Indians – “the Hospitality tribe” approximately 10,000 years ago and has had a past rich in history, liberty & independence. The drive for liberty and independence that brought George Washington’s army in the eighteenth century and the Underground Railroad in the nineteenth century continued in 2002 when New Hope became the first borough in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to pass a comprehen-
sive ordinance banning discrimination in employment, public housing and public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. New Hope’s connection to Cuba is through food, rather than heritage, via local establishments Havana and Sandbar. New Hope has been home to many notable personalities such as Abbie Hoffman, Aaron Freeman (aka Gene Ween) & Mickey Melchiondo (aka Dean Ween), James Michener, George Nakashima and Kelly McGillis. Much of the history of New Hope dates back to the Revolutionary War and the famous Washington Crossing of the Delaware. Pictured left is Kevin Castellanos, 17, President of the Key West High School Gay Straight Alliance, holding a copy of the New Hope Celebrates 2012 Pride Guide in front of the painting by noted Key West artist Rick Worth of former Monroe County (Florida Keys) Mayor Wilhelmina Harvey
“crossing the seven mile bridge straights.” The painting is a parody of the iconic “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” an 1851 oil-on-canvas work by German American artist Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze commemorating Washington crossing the Delaware River on December 25 during the American Revolutionary War. He went on to win the Battle of Trenton. This art is on the side of local Key West gay neighborhood watering hole, Bobby’s Monkey Bar. New Hope and Key West also share a very special piece of gay history. For the past five years, New Hope has had the distinct honor to host a very special guest – a section of the now world famous Key West Rainbow Flag. Sponsored by ABSOLUT Vodka and created by Gilbert Baker, the flag spanned Duval Street for Key West’s Annual Pride Celebration and was named Rainbow 25’s sea-to-sea flag in tribute to the creation of the first pride flag
on it’s 25th anniversary. The flag ran the length of Key West’s Duval Street, stretching 1.25 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. •
Who is Gilbert Baker?
Gilbert Baker created the Rainbow Flag in June 1978. His work as a vexillographer (flag maker) spans 30 years and includes two world records. The Rainbow Flag is an international phenomenon, with millions of people everywhere embracing it as a symbol of the GLBTA movement.

New Hope Celebrates is a non-profit 501(c)3 all-volunteer marketing organization whose mission is to provide events which stimulate LGBT tourism to New Hope from throughout the Northeast region as well as provide fun community events for local Bucks County residents. Proceeds from NHC’s events are often granted to needy LGBT organizations such as the Rainbow Room, the Trevor Foundation for LGBT troubled teen intervention, and medical groups providing help to those with HIV-AIDS. “This week of Pride is important because it keeps New Hope on the radar of LGBT tourists nationwide,” commented Daniel Brooks, Founder and President of NHC. “Always a welcoming environment, New Hope is a mainstay in the course of LGBT history and this event gives it a chance to shine—to be discovered by some, or rediscovered by others. Open to all, it is like a springtime country fair that happens to be run by gay folks. Therein lies it’s uniqueness.”

Taking Center Stage...
The Bucks County Playhouse And It’s Triumphant Return.
New Hope Celebrates is proud to dedicate our 2012 parade - “Celebrate Dramatheater on parade ”- to the reopening of our regional jewel, the beloved Bucks County Playhouse. Once a grist mill for one of New Hope’s pioneer families, the Parry’s, the old barn was slated to be torn down in 1939 but was saved by a group led by the
famous Broadway iconic playwright-director, Moss Hart. He and his wife, Broadway actress Kitty Carlisle married and lived in New Hope. During the years that followed, the Playhouse, with it’s 450 seats, has seen thousands of dramatic and musical performances and served as the launching pad for many rising stars, such as Robert Redford, Lillian Gish, Shirley Booth and Grace Kelly, just to name a few. It’s white and red barn colors, constant water flow fed by Ingham Creek and historic, proud structure have become recognizable symbols of the peaceful, 38
serenely artistic ways of the area. BCP became an integral part of the community fabric and, as an employer, brought many diverse individuals to the area. It is therefore fitting that New Hope Celebrates, as a non-profit organization devoted to the propagation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and allied (LGBTA) populace, honor our gay heritage and very long relationship with the Bucks County Playhouse during Pride week. All of the community was greatly affected when, in 2011, the Playhouse was closed but community groups quickly formed to come to it’s aid.
Bucks County Playhouse, 1970s, photograph by Jack Rosen, James A. Michener Art Museum archives
Thanks to their efforts and finally to the Bridge Street Foundation–led by locals–the Playhouse is undergoing major renovations and a revival will transform it when the doors reopen on July 2, 2012. Like Moss Hart, the Foundation, under Producing Director Jed Bernstein, will “save” and preserve tradition by running two major shows this summer and a holiday attraction in the fall. For the 2012 season, BCP will feature two shows–titles as yet to be announced–one in July and one in August. In addition, a special Christmas show will occupy the theater in November and December. The hopes and 2013 plan is to never have “dark days” at BCP again. To support the renovations and it’s new status of bringing top-rated, seasoned Equity Ac-
tors to the Bucks County Playhouse, an extensive theater membership campaign is in force. Memberships are $80 for individuals, $160 for families and $500 for businesses, and being a member has it’s privileges. Tickets are now being sold at the Playhouse or through it’s Web site, www.bcptheater.org. We at New Hope Celebrates appreciate your support of our LGBTA community by attending our festival this year. In addition, we know you will enjoy our “Celebrate Drama” parade, with it’s spirited bands and music, colorful floats and many enthusiastic marchers. The survival of the history of our town and lifestyle depends on the preservation of it’s roots. Clearly the Playhouse is a major part of those roots and we thank the Bridge Street Foundation for stepping “up to the stage” and giving us back our heritage. While you are here, we hope that you will sign up to support the Bucks County Playhouse, of which NHC is a proud year round member. We invite you to return to New Hope and take in a show at the new BCP and tell them NHC sent you. •

Days like today really do bring everyone in our community closer together. That’s why we wanted to say thanks. Thanks for all the fun. Thanks for the memories. But more than anything else, thanks for letting us be a part of this incredible place we’re proud to call home.

Lambertville
The “Bridge” symbolizes a long standing friendly symbiosis between the unique yet connected small town communities of New Hope and Lambertville, NJ. Though in different states, the towns grew up fertilized by the seeds of shared water--first the Delaware River, an important symbol of freedom from Revolutionary days, and later the man-made canals, which brought industry and prosperity to the entire Delaware Valley. While both towns evolved because of common bodies of water, each took on their own characters. When New Hope emerged as a more boisterous haven of the arts, Lambertville maintained a distinct essence of culture, developing an outstanding standard of proud, austere reverence to the past and a commitment to subtle and traditional excellence. Currently a walk down Bridge or Church Street pays awesome homage a long history, with fine antique stores, a bevy of multiethnic restaurants and specialized shops alongside some of 52
the most notable “old school” as well as contemporary art galleries in the area. Determined not to be a river reflection of it’s neighbor to the west, Lambertville is the essence of individuality–not a “sister city” but more the quiet and beautiful, distinguished “first cousin”–a remarkable and memorable entity of perfection. Visit Lambertville and experience why this community has for centuries epitomized harmony and equality, while maintaining a diverse and amazingly beautiful spirit that is all it’s own.
