Your Legacy...Their Future

In order to recognize those who have made planned giving commitments to Cameron University, the university established the 1908 Heritage Society. Named in honor of Cameron University's historic establishment in 1908, the society reflects the wishes of its members to continue the legacy of Cameron University. Members of the 1908 Heritage Society have chosen to leave a lasting legacy and solidify the future of Cameron University by committing to provide a planned gift.

Jeneanne Lawson - Her Legacy. Her Way.

In November 2011, Jeneanne Lawson, a member of Cameron State Agricultural College’s class of 1949, contacted Cameron University’s Office of University Advancement to convey her intent to donate a residential property to the Cameron University Foundation. Proceeds from the sale of the property were used to benefit Cameron students.

CU chose to honor her gift by naming the tutoring center in the Academic Commons the Jeneanne Lawson Tutoring Center.

For the next six years, Ms. Lawson continued her strong commitment to supporting the endeavors of Cameron students as a member of President’s Partners. Her fervent belief in the university’s mission led her to once again contact Cameron to establish a planned gift of another residential property and other assets. Ms. Lawson, a former communication teacher and fundraising professional, passed away in January 2018.

“Ms. Lawson took great joy in giving back,” says Albert Johnson, Jr., Vice President for University Advancement. “She understood the importance of utilizing estate planning to earmark how her donation would be used. Through her foresight, Ms. Lawson worked with the Cameron University Foundation in creating the legacy she envisioned.”

Through her planned gift, Ms. Lawson leaves a legacy as an educator, a Cameron University alumna, and a supporter of Cameron University students that will continue in perpetuity.

“I love Cameron, I see all the recent growth, and I want to help Cameron students find success.”

PLANNED GIVING OPTIONS

There are a variety of ways to incorporate your philanthropic goals into your planned giving.

Bequests

Many donors choose to make a planned gift through a will or living trust, which enables them to retain their assets during their lifetime, while also benefitting CU in the future. Bequests can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of an estate, or the balance of an estate after the donor provides for their family or loved ones.

A bequest removes those assets from an estate and reduces estate tax liability. So that the donor may be properly acknowledged as a member of the 1908 Heritage Society, each donor is asked to provide the Cameron University Foundation, Inc. with a copy of the relevant portion of his or her will or living trust.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

The charitable remainder unitrust and the charitable remainder annuity trust are two life income planned gift options that allow donors to make a gift to the Cameron University Foundation, Inc., and receive income back annually. The donor or a designee receives income for the rest of their life or for a set number of years, while also receiving a current income tax deduction for the gift.

A charitable remainder trust is established when the donor irrevocably transfers cash, securities, or real estate to fund the trust. With the transfer of appreciated securities or real estate, the donor not only receives the charitable gift deduction, but also avoids capital gains tax. Upon the termination of the trust, the remaining principal in the trust is directed to the university.

Life Insurance

A gift of life insurance can be a very affordable and flexible planned giving method. By purchasing a life insurance policy naming the Cameron University Foundation, Inc., as the owner and beneficiary, a donor can receive a charitable gift deduction for each premium payment. A paid-up life insurance policy that may no longer be needed can also be contributed, allowing a donor to receive a charitable gift deduction approximately equal to the cash surrender value of the policy.

Retained Life Estate

A gift of a home or farm can be made without giving up the use of the property during a lifetime. A donor may also allow for their spouse or other loved ones to live there upon their death. A donor can obtain a charitable income tax deduction based on the value of the property and their age. Property taxes and insurance remain the donor's responsibility.

Contact CU's planned giving team to request further details about tax-effective options for establishing a planned gift. Our experienced staff will ensure your intentions are clearly stated and your objectives are fulfilled.

ENDOWED OPPORTUNITIES

Endowed Scholarships

Cameron University students have benefitted from the generosity of endowed scholarship donors for nearly 40 years. These scholarship contributions provide enormous opportunities for students, many times opening the doors to educational opportunities that may have otherwise been out of reach.

Endowed scholarships are established when a minimum contribution from a donor is deposited into the university’s endowment fund and invested under the direction of the Cameron University Foundation Board of Directors. Each year, a percentage of the earnings from the investment is awarded to deserving students.

To establish an endowed scholarship, the following contribution is required:

• Endowed Scholarship: $25,000

"I am sincerely honored to have been selected as a recipient of the Fulbright-Helvey Endowed Scholarship. As a first-generation college student and young woman, I am grateful to have been awarded this scholarship to lessen my financial burden and allow my focus on the most important aspect of college, which is learning. I hope to use the knowledge and skills I gain at Cameron University to prove that women have a strong impact in higher education, and to make a difference in the lives of my peers and community.”

"I truly appreciate being awarded the Ewell B. Lacy Endowed Scholarship as it is very thoughtful and gracious. My education is extremely important to me, and with support from donors, I can channel my studies to a higher standard. As a Cameron University student, I wish to spread the importance of giving back to the community and student body in a multitude of ways. I am currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Cybersecurity, and the Ewell B. Lacy Endowed Scholarship has given me the inspiration and support needed to achieve my learning goals.”

Endowed Faculty Positions

Cameron has a greater number of endowed faculty positions than any other regional public university in Oklahoma. These positions make a direct contribution to the quality of teaching and learning at Cameron by enabling academic endeavors that would not otherwise be possible.

By endowing a faculty position, you are directly contributing to the success of Cameron. To endow a faculty position, the following contributions are required:

• To endow a lectureship: $100,000

• To endow a professorship: $250,000

• To endow a chair: $500,000

“It is an honor to serve as the McCasland Foundation Endowed Chair in Educational Leadership. This foundation affords multiple opportunities, such as book studies and seminars for the development of principal candidates as they work towards becoming exemplar educational leaders. Along with assistance in developing future campus leaders, the foundation allows for me to travel throughout the Southwest Oklahoma region to develop relationships with principals and superintendents and support campuses and districts in their professional development endeavors. All of these activities open doors for the promotion and recruitment of future students and principal candidates to Cameron University. I am grateful to the McCasland Foundation for the generous support of our educational leadership program!”

- Dr. Stephanie Phillips

“I am honored to be the B.H. Brewer Endowed Chair in Education. Because of this funding, I am able to continuously improve our program quality by collecting data and assessments that pertain to our curriculum. With our focus always being on students and their success, collecting and analyzing departmental data ensures we not only maintain high academic standards, but also allows us to make curriculum revisions based on our students’ needs.”

- Dr. Michelle Smith

“The McMahon Endowed Chair position allows me to significantly further my professional activity by traveling nationally and internationally for performances. Whether it's in a big city in Australia or a small town in Texas, I help increase the visibility of Cameron University, Lawton/Fort Sill area, and Oklahoma in the most positive way. Our students benefit from having a professor who is an active performer.”

- Dr. Hyunsoon Whang
