used to do a lot of work in the local area around grassroots music and loved nothing more than seeing a band start off at school, hardly even able to play their instruments while belting out their best attempt at some legendary ‘rock’ tune, watching them grow and mature into proper accomplished musicians with their own style and sound always filled me with a warm fuzzy glow. In those days I worked putting on weekly shows in a number of places across the county and we only had one rule when it came to booking bands – NO TRIBUTES – NO COVERS – only breaking that rule twice was a badge of honour. Our first was for The Counterfeit Clash and our second, which was forced upon us, was for those ****s The Complete Stone Roses. I’ve mellowed a good deal in my old age and I’m actually proud to say that I can appreciate both sides of the coin now and that’s thanks mainly to the new crop of local tributes and covers doing the rounds at the moment. I suppose it started back with Alma Fiera who, although doing a collection of staple rock covers, seemed to inject a decent amount of their own sound into things. Other top cover bands around like Cash from Chaos and tributes Clash Livi Rockers and most

recently Lizzie and the Banshees are all close to my heart coming from a Punk’ish musical background they easily slipped into some of my favourite local bands. And then there is Uncle Red… ‘Uncle Red’ is the moniker chosen for a 50’s inspired rockabilly band from West Lothian who have honed their individual crafts from gigging extensively throughout their lives. Now, coming together as the Red’s they have play regularly in our local Pubs, Clubs, Festivals, Weddings, Car shows and I’m presuming Bar Mitzvah’s…. they are pretty much gig whores and have been known, on more than one occasion, to cram 2 shows into one night just to get their fix of sweet sounding sweaty rock n roll. The Reds could literally have been pulled from any 50’s playhouse, mid set, and plonked smack bang on our doorstep, as they swagger around the stage in full rockabilly regalia, brandishing killer Gretsch guitars and flicking a some super cool ‘old boy’ quiffs right at you to a rock solid beat. They look the part, they sound the part and to be honest they are the part… they are not just a covers band. No… they are much, much more than that. There is a character there, a presence, a vibe that so many cover bands simply fail to capture when they play. Think of what Setzer did for old school rock ‘n’ roll in the 80’s and as covers bands go, they are just as cool as that. When the Reds play live you can tell that they

live for their music, it oozes from every intro, every verse and every chorus and it cuts you to the bone with some killer licks. Frontman Big John has all the chops and the swagger required to get the message across while you might find it hard to take your eyes off bass maestro Luis as he somehow manages to lock in the beats smashed out by stickman Scobe all swathed in the slicing guitar from lead picker Calum. The Red’s have recently seen an overhaul within the band with new Gretsch swinging Brian taking up the lead guitarist reigns from the departing Telecaster’ific Calum. Can’t wait to see and hear how this goes down, if the pics are anything to go by it’s gonna be pretty sweet, pretty damn sweet. The Red’s music is tattooed not only on their arms but right down to their bones, in full Technicolor, deep down where the watered down façade of so called ‘modern music’ can’t touch it, it can’t fade its sparkle. It’s rock, and it’s roll, it’s a wee bit of country but 99.9% thoroughbred rockabilly, and it’s pretty damn awesome and never ever to be compared with any wishy washy Jake Buggs or the likes. For me the bonus in it all is that the guys are dipping their toes into the shark infested waters of doing ‘their own’ songs. That might not be everyone’s cup of tea but for me if only these guys would turn their hand to a few more of these ‘original’ tunes I could literally die a happy man.

GoGuide Magazine gets the lowdown on the super cool dudes over @ Uncle Red GG: How long have you been a band?

UR: Since 2006, line has changed slightly, John Donoghue and John Lewis are original members.

GG: Who are the members and what do they play â&#x20AC;&#x201C; For tribute bands who do they play?

UR: Big John- Lead singer and rhythm Guitar, Lui- Slap Bass, Harmonica and the fool, Scobe- Drums and backing vocals, BrianLead Guitar and backing vocals

GG: How did you all meet?

UR: The band were formed from a jam session in The West Port pub in Bathgate, Had a couple of changes to the line up over the years, but now settled on a hard core 4 piece

GG: How hard was it to come up with your name?

UR: The name comes from the film Honkytonk Man, Clint Eastwood plays a dying counrty singer called Uncle Red, Seem to just fit

GG: What is your favourite song to play? Is it different when you play live?

UR: Our own song `All Night Long` gets all the boppers on the floor and really rocks, also our version of a Johnny Cash Classic`Big River`, Blows you away at live gigs

GG: Do you try to add your own wee twist to the songs or are you going for as close to the original as you can get?

UR: We try hard to keep it original but with a modern twist and a bit more vibrancy

GG: How do you chose your set list?

UR: Big John picks the set and tells the guys ok this is it !!

GG: Is there any songs you find you can’t quite get right?

UR: Aye so we don’t play them

GG: Do you have any you don’t like to do?

UR: See Above !!!

GG: Where has your best show been?

UR: No, most have past over to the other side

GG: Have you ever met any of the people you cover?

UR: Live gigs is were its at, probably the O2 in Glasgow in Dec `13 Awesome !!

GG: What or who inspired you to get into music?

UR: Elvis and family parties when we all had a go at singing or playing our instrumets

GG: Do you play in any other bands?

UR: No, we are committed to `Uncle Red` once you find a band that fits work hard and enjoy !!

GG: Why did you make the decision to do a tribute/covers band?

UR: To keep this music alive and bring it to new ears, if someone goes home after one of our gigs and buys or listens to an Elvis, Johnny Cash or Bill Haley song then our job is done.

GG: What was the first tune you learned?

UR: As a band we played around with the Sun Sessions from Elvis and just loved it !!

GG: What do you bring to the table that other bands don’t? What makes you stand out?

UR: This is real stripped down music as it should be, just like it was in the 50s, Everyone knows or think the know the music when they hear us, and cant help but dance.

GG: So what can an audience expect when they bear witness to your live performance?

UR: Good Rockin music played with passion, Great fun and a vibrant atmosphere, lots of energy and visually stimulating !

UR: Vibrant, lots of good venues and bands on the scene, long may it continue.

GG: Any local bands that you are into just now?

UR: Elvis and Brian Setzer.

GG: What does the next year hold for you?

UR: Busy year ahead and hopefully a new CD to record with our new rockin Guitarist Brian

GG: Finally is there anyone youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d particularly like to acknowledge for supporting you along the way?

UR: Our family for putting up with us and our weekly rehearsals. Rock Til U drop and Jump Jive, Both jive clubs have been very supportive over the years, it means a lot!!

first heard a very young Andrew Robertson play in a church hall in Bathgate as part of indie rock band Trondheim almost 10 years ago. Even then you could see that the young pup had talent beyond simple playing guitar and playing/ writing pretty sweet indie/rock tunes like ‘Casino Royale’ and ‘The Purge’. Around the same time as Trondheim Andy was also branching out as a full on axe wielding frontman with pop/punk band J.A.C.C. This allowed him to truly showcase his growing song writing skills with full on pop punk ditties like ‘Get To’, kick as rock songs in ‘501’ and epic monster tracks in the shape of ‘The Event’. Unfortunately for J.A.C.C. Andy didn’t see his future with them and he left shortly after they started to spread their wings, retired to what looked like his rock roots? he fronted crossover band Fuze/Munk during their short career, a mishmash of styles with no real direction, the band soon called it a day and for a while we didn’t hear from Mr Robertson in any shape or form other than short and sporadic solo acoustic appearances with his sister who was also a super talented musician and vocalist. It turned out that Andy hadn’t disappeared completely and after finishing up school he relocated to Glasgow where he started to concentrate on writing his own flavour of acoustic folk songs and gigging around the Glasgow bar scene using open mic nights to hone his own material and an impressing array of cover songs. As Uni life took its toll Andy was forced to give up playing live and concentrated instead on his education and exploring life in other avenues. 4 years later, now a well-educated and rounded individual with a wealth of life experiences behind him Mr Robertson is back…. and boy is he back….

With a re-invigorated passion for writing, playing live and all the other rigmaroles that go hand in hand with getting people to listen to the music you write, Andy Robertson is well and truly home. With the help of another local musical dude Jamie Dirkie, they both locked themselves away in JD’s studio/bedroom/mission control and so far have produced some of the best recording’s I’ve heard from a local team in a long, long time, as they say on their blurb it really does seem like ‘a match made in heaven’. From early in 2013 we have been drip fed some truly beautiful tracks that have become Andy’s debut solo EP ‘Not Today’ ad these tracks will eventually become the backbone of the debut album ‘Going, Gone’ to be released soon. Life moments form that basis of most of the songs that Andy writes, reflecting and relating them to the things going on around him. Those experiences grow daily as the man hits the road more now than he did when he was a fresh faced, tall, good looking, supercool frontman of some of the local scenes best high school bands, gigging furiously across West Lothian whenever he can and spreading those wings into our twin cities giving them a taste of his folky vision. If we look closer at debut EP ‘Not Today’ we see a showcase spread in front of us that contains some real gems on board, despite the EP being billed as a just a mostly unplugged ‘taster’ of the upcoming album release. Opener ‘Going, Gone’ sets the tone pretty well and showpieces some of the breathy subtle and unique tones of the awesome voice Mr Robertson has developed over the years. I can forgive him for sinking into that ‘dialectic’ phrasing every now and again as I’m sure it will disappear in time, the voice is too good and there is way too much talent to rely on things like that. It’s a passing fad that I personally can’t wait to be over with, especially with bands like Twin Atlantic (who I love listening to) and that Nutini bloke (who I can’ even bring myself to give him his full name) taking it just too damn far man, come on, we should have stopped at The Proclaimers dudes. Thankfully it only pops up every now and again, and to be fair it doesn’t detract from what is a beautifully crafted and well put together EP, giving us a proper feel for what

we can expect from the full blown album. Track two ‘Feel Like I’m Gold’ is another acoustic track that winds its way across your mind and you soon find yourself humming along, then singing along. Track three picks things up with the more intense and musically produced ‘I’m Not Leaving’, an inspiring and uplifting track with a great singalong chorus that is probably the biggest hint at what a full blown Andy Robertson album track might sound like. Closing the EP is the more sombre feeling title track ‘Not Today’, again an acoustic rendition of the track, there is no doubt that this young man has no fears about wearing his heart on his sleeve and you can hear it in every line. Overall, ‘Not Today’ is an awesome collection of songs that everyone should get hold of as soon as they can. Debut EP to one side, we really can’t do an Andy Robertson feature without mentioning a couple of amazing tracks he has out there at the moment. One which isn’t actually on his Soundcloud page anymore but does feature on the first offering from local collective ‘Les Frites Petites’, which we told you last time loosely translated as Small Fries?, with their album ‘Vol. 1’. Andy’s track closes the album with the remarkable song ‘Falling Down’, a truly inspiring and perfect song that shows off everything that is special about this guy. This brings us to a song that was included in our ‘Tracks of 2013’ at the beginning of the year, the almost perfect ‘Slip Away’. This truly is a masterpiece of a song with more ‘edge’ than anything I’ve heard from a local artist in the past 10 years, beautifully written, played and sung and a song that never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Thanks Andy. For me there’s no better place for local live music than Glasgow just for it’s wide variety of different genres and music nights and a great place for exposure for upcoming artists. GG: Any local bands that you are into just now? AR: I’m really enjoying Black Balloons at the moment GG: If you could tour with anyone, past or present, who would it be? AR: Ben Howard GG: What does the next year hold for you? AR: I’m due to release my album that I’ve been working on the past year and play some gigs in some new places. SUPERFAST SLEEPING ROUTINE

Probably the one most important tricks up your sleeve to help you fall asleep quickly is a proper night time routine. Well before you hit your bed stay away from any overly stimulating electronics like TV’s, computers or tablets. You should also always try to do the same things as you prepare for bed. Ready you clothes for the next day > Brush your teeth > Do some stretches > Read a little > Use some relaxation techniques…. But you choose, it’s your routine. Once your body gets into the habit of your routine your brain will know that it’s time to go to sleep.

EXERCISE

We have all had those nights when regardless of what you do you just can’t get to sleep? You try everything but it seems the more you try to sleep the more awake you become. It happens to everyone at some point and for most people it is a pretty rare event. For others though it can become a regular occurrence and can kick off a downward spiral that leads to all sorts of related issues. A lack of a regular sleep pattern or regular poor quality sleep can be linked to a wide variety of health issues. Here are a few simple methods to help you get to sleep faster.

CAFFEINE Caffeine can take a very long time to leave your system, way longer than it takes for the effect to wear off. So if you must have a drink with a high caffeine content like coffee to get you started or keep you going it is all good, BUT try not to have too many, draw line way before you hit that four or five cups a day and definitely cut out any caffeine after 2:00 pm if you have trouble sleeping.

Although it might make you feel tired, your body actually takes a good few hours to cool down and relax from any form of workout. So try not to do any extensive exercise less than 3 hours before you plan to go to bed. Leaving plenty of buffer time to relax between your workout and sleeping will go a long way to helping you to fall asleep quickly.

NEW MATTRESS If you already do all the stuff above and still struggle to drop off you may just need a new mattress to get you to fall asleep faster. Your brain and body are simply going to fight sleep If you aren’t totally comfortable, try upgrading or just changing your mattress to a different form and you might just find the one that works for you. I’m one of the lucky ones who fall asleep minutes after my head hits the pillow so give our wee tips a try and you too could find yourself falling asleep faster that even you imagined and without any nasty drugs or chemicals.

EATING This is a hard one for most but to break your insomnia problems try eating no later than three or four hours before bed. If you struggle start off with 1 week at 1 hour, then 2, until you can settle on the 3-4 hour mark. The human body isn’t meant to digest food lying down iherb.com so eating too much before you go to bed will negatively affect your sleep.

NEED SOME RUNNING MOTIVATION?

When that early morning alarm starts ringing it can be pretty hard to motivate yourself to get yourself out of your nice warm bed, into your running shoes and out in the wind and ran for a few miles. So in order to stop yourself hitting that snooze button you need some motivation! To keep yourself going try a few of these wee techniques…

VARIETY When I was running 45 miles a week my biggest problem was boredom, the same route, the same weather week in, and the same routine all piled up. Vary your training with things like hill reps and shorter recovery runs, sessions on the track will all keep you interested and you motivation up. Plan ahead and keep a store of running routes with varying scenery at the very least. If you are really struggling hit the gym for a treadmill session for a real change in scenery.

FRIENDS One of the easiest ways to keep at it is to arrange to run with friends or other runners. It makes you commit as no one likes making excuses to other people just because they don’t feel up to it. The usual progression from casual running friends to training partners is a well-known benefit of running with others; you quickly become each other source of accountability and can offer each other support when

needed. Strangely guilt and shame can truly motivate people in a really positive way.

MUSIC If you can’t get a running buddy music is a proven method of generating positive impact on your feelings and on just how motivated you feel. Try not to listen to the latest album on your ipod or your favourite R&B artists greatest hits, instead take some time and create a bundle of playlists that contain all the songs that mean something to you, things that you can draw on when you need it most. Choosing certain songs at stages of your run go a long way to helping you push yourself that mile farther or that last mile faster than even you thought.

LOVE IS IS IN THE AIR I’m sure we’ve all been in a situation where we’ve perhaps got the wrong end of the stick or worse still made a complete fool of ourselves by declaring our feelings for someone, well the person on the other end of those is usually just as embarrassed as you are. So maybe there were some things that they could have looked out for that might have warned them that their friend or colleagues feelings were not quite as platonic as their own. So before they try to cross the line into a more ‘amore’ territory keep an eye out for these tell tale sign that spell trouble ahead…

ACTING DIFFERENTLY Probably one of the more obvious things to spot is If someone you’ve known for a while starts acting differently. If they are usually loud and outgoing they could start being quieter and more reserved around you in order to stop themselves from saying something daft. On the other hand some who is usually more restrained can all of a sudden become the life and soul of the party to try to impress you.

Watch out for the signs that someone who used to be comfortable to talk about these things all of a sudden seems to changes the subject when these things pop up. They may even get visibly upset when you talk about someone you fancy, they’re most likely feeling a wee bit jealous.

SUPERBRAIN Probably the most complex thing in the universe and definitely the most complex organ in the human body, the human brain. It does it all, but here’s a few things you might not have known?

The human brain feels no pain… being the only organ in the human body without nerves it feels no pain in the way other organs do.

ENERGY

FAT

Despite only taking up 2% of the body’s overall weight the human brain is said to be the fattest organ in the human body with around 60% of the brain composed of fat. In a healthy human being this is the highest concentration of fat to be found in one single organ.

SCIENCE

The human brain burns 20% of the overall power of the body although only takes up 2% of your body weight. This energy is used for maintaining healthy brain cells and for powering your nerve impulses.

A common misconception is that humans use less than 10% of their brain, however, science shows that each and every part of the brain has a known function.

POWER

The energy used by the brain is sufficient to light a standard 25 watt light bulb.

WORST FOODS TO EAT BEFORE BEDTIME Eating before you go to bed isn’t in itself an issue, but what you eat is. There are definitely things that you should stay away from eating before going to bed. Here are some of the worst things you can eat before you hit the sack.

PEANUT BUTTER Anything based on nut butter should be avoided – so almond butter, peanut butter etc. is sure to pile on the pounds and lead to ill health.

SNACK BARS

We really don’t need to say it but avoid eating snack bars despite how desirable they might seem. Research has shown that 7 out of 10 people noshing on snack bars before going to bed often have dreams or nightmares during the night. The high amount of sugar is said to produce “more nightmarish brain waves.”

CRISPS

Probably my biggest hurdle in the late night snack stakes is the innocent little crisp. Never eat them before retiring, in fact you should try not eat them at all in the evening, be it while you’re sitting watching TV, or using your tablet, laptop etc. They are a dangerous wee time bomb just waiting to explode. They are just too easy to eat too much of them.

Preparation and cooking times

Ingredients

3 sweet potatoes Canola oil, for brushing 1 tbsp Cajun Spice rub/seasoning Salt and black pepper 60ml maple syrup 30 to 45g Dijon mustard

SWEET POTATO WEDGES

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty...

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F and line a large baking tray or two with foil. Cut your sweet potatoes into wedges and place in a large bowl, add the oil and sprinkle with the Cajun spice, salt and pepper and mix until all are well coated. Line your wedges in a single row on the tray and place tray in the oven for 10-15 mins or until cooked and golden. With 5 mins to go stick a griddle pan on a high heat. Whisk the syrup with the mustard. Remove wedges from oven and place them on the griddle pan and brush with the syrup glaze, turn a few times until caramelized and serve.

DESERT

BANANA FRITTER’S

Preparation and cooking times

Prep time: 15 mins - Cook time: 25 mins

Ingredients

Minced Steak – 600-700g Rosemary Lincolnshire poacher cheese (cheddar etc.) Tomatoes Sweet peppers Habanero chilli pepper (any other chilli) Spring onions Olive oil Basil (mint, parsley, coriander) Lemon and lime Buns (choose as desired)

Preparation and cooking times

Prep time: 10 mins - Cook/Stand time: 20 mins Total time just over an hour

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... Burgers Start off with the minced steak, season with salt and pepper, add your sprigs of rosemary and start mixing well using your hands. Next you want to take a chunk of your cheese and start chopping it up, not too small though, then add that to your mince and begin mixing the cheese in to the steak. Drizzle with olive oil and then take a golf ball sized piece of the mince mixture and proceed to make patties as thick or thin as you like. When made you can stick them in the fridge if your preparing for later so the burgers will set if you want but you should be fine if you’re planning on eating right away. Cook to your liking and serve in your desired bun. Spicy Salsa Take your tomatoes, sweet pepper and your habanero and put them under a grill to char them up (make a hole in the habanero as it will explode under the heat if you don’t). Once they are blackened and charred remove and peel the skin off and start to chop and mush together, chop the spring onions and basil then add to the salsa, add some olive oil and the juice of half a lemon and lime then stir together. Serve in bowl with the burgers.

Ingredients

125g plain flour, sifted 1tsp baking powder 75g desiccated coconut Vegetable oil for frying

Lime zest Salt 4 Banana’s (riped)

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl then add the sugar, lime zest and add a pinch of salt and stir. Peel and mash your bananas then add into your batter mix then mix again until it’s all combined. Use cling film to cover the mixture and put in the fridge for 15 mins. Fill a large sauce pan about one-third full of vegetable oil and then heat to 180c. use a table spoon to carefully drop spoonful’s of the batter into the oil and fry for 2 – 3 minutes, until there golden brown and cooked all the way through. Using a slotted spoon lift the fritters out and place on a piece of kitchen paper, sprinkle with suger and serve hot.

et’s get the obvious out of the way. This movie had a lot of obstacles to overcome to even be considered an ‘alright’ movie. Hurdle after hurdle would have presented itself before filming even began. The first one is the track record that videogame film adaptations have. A few have gotten it right and struck a great balance of staying true to the subject matter and appeasing existing fan-bases, but most fall flat and way behind the mark (can anyone say Max Payne?).

Since the late 1980’s Hollywood has tried to cash-in on the videogame market, and whilst some have had great box office success (the Tomb Raider films spring to mind) and some are even accepted as good adaptations of their beloved games (Silent Hill is often noted as being close to the games), Need For Speed shared the same troubles as fighting game adaptations (Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, we’re looking at you). This is because what looks good and is a great selling point for video games doesn’t always Page 82

translate into films. With fighting games, the level of violence and physical abilities of the characters is, for lack of a better phrase (and please excuse the pun), bloody ridiculous. The same principle goes for driving games; the super souped-up cars, the amount of damage both vehicle and driver can withstand and the through-the-roof stupidity level and ineptness of the police force are all part of the fun in video games. The reason that fighting and driving games get away with what they do in the games and not on the screens is most likely to do with the audience participation level; videogames are active, films are passive. We watch films and play games, so what is fun to play and interact with isn’t the same on-screen, in fact sometimes it’s rather boring. So, take the game-to-movie track record problem, couple it with the fact that the genre is a driving game and then throw in the other obvious hurdle of being compared to the Fast & Furious films and it looks like Need for Speed would almost certainly fail as a film. Yet with all that was against it, it turned out to be a great film, and here’s why. Need for Speed is one of those films where you know exactly what you’re going to get before you’ve even bought your ticket. Those that played the game back in the day will also know what to expect without even seeing the trailer. But the trailer and previous gaming experience don’t let on to a nice little extra APRIL 2014 - issue (38)

added bonus in the film – it’s actually really good, it’s more than just a racing film or just a game adaptation. This is a film that really doesn’t disappoint. You go in expecting fast cars. Drag racing, police chases, explosions, cheesy jokes and one-liners that would be completely unacceptable in any other genre of film is what you expect, and that’s what you’ll get. Knowing this and remembering that it is still a game adaptation, you shouldn’t expect elaborate plot twists, stunning character development or memorable quotations. There is little to none of any of this, yet Need for Speed is a thoroughly enjoyable and watchable film. In the place of all of the above are staggering and jaw-dropping action sequences that are a real credit to the genre. The whole film is marvellously silly and great fun. The whole film is very formulaic and quite predictable; however it is still entertaining and holds your attention throughout the whole 2 hour runtime. Need for Speed’s aim isn’t to give audiences a great, or even that original, of a plot. It’s to show off some impressive compliments of engineering in the best way possible and it does this beautifully. Everything else that comes with the film is a bonus. This is without a doubt the most authentic car film I’ve ever seen, and I mean authentic down to its true definition. Whilst the plot is a little

far-fetched, the authenticity comes from the cars and action sequences themselves. The lack of CGI in this film is stunning. There were many shells made of the expensive cars so that when a crash needed to happen, the stunts could be performed without trashing very expensive cars or using CGI, making for a very real looking film. All of the actors also received stunt driving training so that as many of the action sequences as possible were as real as could be safely managed. It was really great to see real cars, real chases and real crashes in a racing movie for once. The action sequences more than make up for the plot of the movie and the occasional spell of so-so actin from several cast members throughout the film. Speaking of cast members, Aaron Paul has really come into his own. I didn’t see Jesse

Pinkman once in this film. I feel that Paul will go on to great things, and whilst Breaking Bad was definitely his launching platform (and might even remain to be his best work) it won’t take long for him to be known in his own right and to shake the label of Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad. Kid Cudi was quite a welcome surprise too. He was only the comic relief of the film, but he played his part well and was the lovable goof rather than the village idiot, which he could have all too easily become. The kickass action sequences were accompanied by a kickass soundtrack, which really helped to push this film from average racing movie to exciting, adrenaline fuelled action-packed triumph of a game-to-movie adaptation. That being said, for all of the blood-pumping scenes, Need for Speed was

a little slow to start as the first 30 minutes is spent setting up the characters, but it’s well worth the wait. Don’t listen to the so-called ‘professional’ critics – they rarely know what they are talking about anyway and are more than likely easily bought. This is a great film in its own right, and when you think back to the obstacles it had to overcome, it just makes it all the more of a success. It’s worth the watch simply for the fact that it is a car/racing movie that has little to no CGI and has real crashes, smashes, chases and races. Buckle up and go along for this great ride! NON-STOP

ou know what seems to be non-stop? Liam Neeson staring in thriller movies in which he plays the same character as he did in Taken. Non-Stop is a thriller film set on an airplane which is under a terrorist attack. It stars Liam Neeson playing the same character that he did in Taken, but this time his character is only about 60% as intense. Quite frankly, you should just watch Taken again instead of this (seriously, how awesome was Taken?) because essentially it’s the same thing but with a few differences; this time he’s saving a bunch of people, not just one family member and it takes

place in the air instead of on the ground. Other than that it’s the same movie, but less intense and far less awesome. Liam Neeson’s character is one of authority in the field of security; he has some major character flaws, is an anti-hero and must save the day against impossible odds. Same thing right? Yet there’s not enough to Non-Stop to make me pull it out of the ‘generic action movie’ pile and put it alongside some of the other action movies that do stand out from the crowd. But that’s not to say that NonStop is a bad film. Aside from being Taken on muscle relaxants, Non-Stop is also pretty much a copy and paste of other airline disaster/terrorist films that have previously come before it. So when APRIL 2014 - issue (38)

you really think about it, there’s not too much it could have done to elevate it from “meh, that was an alright film” to “whoa dude, that was awesome!” in the first place. It’s certainly not the worst thing to come out of Hollywood in recent years. Predictably, it’s full of plot holes. Actually, plot pits are probably more accurate. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you’ve seen it, and you’ll see what I’m talking about when you do. It’s all very silly, yet it is somewhat entertaining. I didn’t find myself willing the film to end or wishing that I had a fast-forward button, but it was a little colour-by-numbers at times. Non-Stop¬ plays the badguy-could-be-anyone card to extremes, and at one time even tries to lead audiences to believe that it’s actually Neeson’s character all along. Thank god they avoided that cliché, but some clichés were just too tempting to ignore; the hero with the troubled past, people turning against the hero, the ‘it-was-him-all-along’ reveal – it’s all a little too much at times. But it’s still an alright film. It’s very much one of those films where you have to switch off to enjoy

the film, and I mean switch off completely; unplug yourself from the wall, don’t just leave yourself on stand-by. The script was lacking at best, even Neeson with his gravelly growl couldn’t save it. I would like to say that the action sequences made up for the poor script, but the action sequences were very little and very rushed. This is probably more of an editing error than an acting/directing error, but it still should have made the final cut the way that it is. Considering the print ads on the sides of busses and billboards, Non-Stop really isn’t as action a packed as you might have hoped for. Then again there’s very little that can realistically go on in a pressurised tin can at 30000 feet in the air, and considering they were going for the realism vibe, they did quite well. Continuing on that note, I feel that I need

to acknowledge the direction and execution of the camera work. The filming space must have been very small for the cast, never mind for the equipment and the crew. To film an entire movie where there are no technical goofs visible on an initial watch; camera shadows, visible equipment or crew making unexpected cameos (although if there are any I’m sure some eagle-eyed audience members might spot them on multiple viewings), all whilst keeping a claustrophobic and realistic atmosphere through mise-enscene is quite remarkable. All in all, Non-Stop is a film with very little real-world logic, is about 30 minutes longer than it needs to be and took itself far too seriously. I’m not saying that it should have been more along the lines of Snakes on a Plane, but it should have embraced its clichés and gone with a more relaxed approach, rather than try to pass them off as legitimate

plot developments and twists. The acting wasn’t bad, it’s certainly not Neeson’s best performance, but given what he had to work with he did quite well. I could have done without Julianne Moore, but that’s just a personal preference, I can’t really fault her acting in this film too much, no more than Neeson’s anyway. Non-Stop is not something I’d buy on DVD, but it is one of those films that I’d click on and watch on Netflix if I wanted to kick back and kill a few hours with something silly that isn’t a parody movie. h Lego. You are a perfect vessel for childhood nostalgia and memories of a time when life was a lot more fun, innocent and nowhere near as stressful as it is now. You belong to a happier time. Actually, thinking about it, one of the strongest memories I have of Lego as a child (and I’m sure I’m not alone here) is how much it hurt when you stood on a piece of it with no shoes or slippers on. That physical pain has very rarely been matched by anything else since, except the very sharp, metaphorical kick right in the Childhood that I got when I first heard that They were making a Lego movie. A very overused dramatic cliché filled my mind as I figuratively dropped to my knees in the pouring rain, thrust my clenched fists into the air, looked deep into the sky and let out a gut-wrenching “noooooo!”. Then I gathered myself and went about a more adult way of analysing the news of the impending Lego movie. How could they do this? The whole thing just seemed like a cash-grab to further fund the cold, soulless Hollywood machine. I thought it was going to be a washed-out, poorly

planned kid’s film with very little substance whose only aim was to boost Lego toy sales. Essentially, I thought it was going to be one long, unfeeling advert.

is awesome. End of story. It’s so funny, and probably doesn’t translate well in this review, so my advice would be to go and see this movie immediately.

Whilst I’m probably at least partially right about the toy sales part, I was completely wrong about the rest of my prejudices of the film. In fact, it was epic! It gave me just as much satisfaction watching it as an adult and playing with the Lego sets did as a child. I’d say that this is definitely the adult equivalent for those who no longer play with or collect Lego, and a great addition for those adults who secretly still do (guilty).

The jokes aren’t all character related but the ones that go down that route are so clever and funny that you don’t mind. Two of my favourites (apart from the Batman ones) regard the confusion and mistaken identity of Dumbledore and Gandalf by other characters. The other one regards how Superman reacts and interacts with Green Lantern (I’ll give you a hint, Green Lantern might as well be Aquaman). The real-life elements are also hilarious, like the misunderstanding of what the ‘Kragle’ actually is.

It was entertaining right from the start and stayed that way right through to the end. It was exactly what a Lego product should be; it was creative, entertaining and original – not to mention a lot of fun! The Lego Movie is very funny. There are plenty of jokes for both younger viewers and the older ones. From the very concept of what the Piece of Resistance is, to the understanding and pronunciation of Krazy Glue, to the characters themselves, The Lego Movie really is laugh-a-minute – and they are good laughs too, never cheap ones. Perhaps the funniest character in the entire movie is Batman (who was hilariously voiced by Will Arnett). He really was one of the best and most enjoyable aspects and features of the film. He is a parody of the self-righteous and honourable Batman adaptations we’ve been spoon-fed in the last decade. His whole attitude can be summed up like this: He is awesome because he is Batman, and Batman

The whole cast was brilliant and I can’t praise them enough. Even those who had a relatively small part, or even cameo parts, shone out of their plastic and animated characters. I’m normally not a fan of Will Ferrell (with the exceptions of Elf and Anchorman) but I liked him in this, both his animated and live-action parts. The whole movie is relentless with its attention to detail. Everything in the movie can be built in the real world; by real members of the audience should they be so inclined. The movement of the on-screen Lego pieces (whilst all CGI) was realistic, yet not static. It was much more fluid than stopmotion and the visual effects of things like the water, fire or smoke all looked like Lego pieces and made for stunning visual effects. The Lego Movie was perfectly executed in

As you know from my series of reviews on the Marvel films, I have a soft spot for the superheroes so seeing Batman in the adverts made me desperate to see it! I’m going to be honest, straight up and say that this film isn’t amazing, it’s no Despicable Me that’s for sure, but it was incredibly entertaining to watch! The combination of high profile actors makes this film appealing to a wide audience, children and adults alike. This is probably something that adults will pick up on though – Morgan Freeman, Channing Tatum, Liam Neeson, Jonah Hill & Will Ferrell. There are also voices you’ll recognise if you watch a lot of TV. This makes it incredibly fun hearing these actors as characters that they wouldn’t necessarily be in real-life films. I’m going to admit that the film is slightly overwritten in places, especially in relation to the main character, Emmett (Chris Pratt:

every way – especially the animation and the writing. My hat goes off to both Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who both wrote and directed the film together. They managed to breathe new life into the underdog story and make it feel original and fresh. The ‘chosen one’ narrative in films has become overused and uninspired in recent years, but The Lego Movie has reinvented it and reminded us that these stories can be great in the right hands. They did a brilliant job of mixing the old with the new and bringing two audiences together; the young and the old, and making sure that they both leave loving the film and talking about it for days to come – not to mention having “Everything is Awesome” stuck in their heads (although “Let it Go” still holds the record for me). I absolutely loved the blend of fiction and non-fiction and the real world and imagination.

Wanted & Bridewars) but I have a sneaky suspicion that this is deliberate. The film as a whole is immensely entertaining, I found myself chuckling pretty much all the way through. Some moments are really clever and I loved the twist that comes about three quarters through the film. I won’t tell you what happens because it would totally ruin for you – I definitely did not see it coming! I love the intermingling of Lego worlds and how they all overlap, it’s brilliant and really does bring Lego to life. I thought the animation of the characters would actually annoy me (I’ve never watched or played a Lego made film/game) but it added to the fun. If you looking for something on a Saturday afternoon because it’s raining outside, or if you’re a family with young kids then this film should definitely be on your list of backup movies. of the right times, yet was completely full of surprises throughout its runtime. It was a thoroughly satisfying film. Some say that it’s got a great message of how one person can make a difference to governments, corporations etc. Some say that it’s a long Lego advert. To be honest, I think it’s a small amount of both. First and foremost, it’s a great movie. If it happens to contain watered-down political messages, so what? As for it being an advert, I couldn’t care less. I wish all adverts were this entertaining!

rom Dusk Till Dawn has hit Netflix on March 12 with a new TV version of the Robert Rodriguez’s 1996 supernatural thriller. New episodes will be arriving arrive weekly across Europe within 24 hours of being broadcast in the US.

FDTD will star DJ Cotrona and Zane Holtz as Seth and Richie Gecko, the bank-robbing brothers we should all know, made famous by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino on the big screen. Robert Patrick, Moulder’s replacement on the last couple of X-Files seasons, also makes a return to the vampire franchise, having actually featured in the sequel ‘From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money’, it will however be in a new role unrelated to his previous character.

loved Denis Leary’s US firefighter based black comedy/drama Rescue Me and I for one thought that the fact that it had to fight so damn hard to get to its final 7th season actually added to the show. You could literally see it etched into every wrinkle on Mr Leary’s face, it was his baby and he wanted it to be everything it could be... and it was.

From the distinct comedic point of view of Leary and Bob Fisher (WEDDING CRASHERS), SIRENS follows three of Chicago’s best EMTs whose sometimes silly, selfrighteous and even self-destructive personalities make them unqualified for sustaining relationships, friendships and most occupations. They are, however, uniquely qualified for saving anyone who winds up in their ambulance. Johnny (Michael Mosley) is a good-looking, sports-loving, Chicago EMT working with his best friend Hank (Kevin Daniels). Brian (Kevin Bigley) is a wide-eyed and excitable new EMT who still lives with his parents. was pretty happy to learn this month that last year’s hit Zombie drama ‘In The Flesh’ was returning to BBC Three in May. That is if it survives the BBC’s seemingly endless creative cull, while everyone is expanding their operations (Sky, Netflix, Amazon TV, Virgin, Blinkbox etc.) the BBC, who are actually the only company with a sizable 99.9% ‘guaranteed’ annual

income regardless of whether people actually watch their channels, visit their web sites and listen to their radio stations (I never user their streaming platform, I never listen to their radio stations and I watch 2hrs of shows from ALL their TV channels – not value for money for me but I still pay a full licence fee) So should we actually make it to May, and Season 2 actually hits our screens, we will be treated to twice as many episodes this year compared to last year’s first season but hopefully the quirky drama and charm of season one… Written by Dominic Mitchell, In The Flesh, dropped in our lap fresh from the BBC Northern Voices scheme bringing a story of

sorrow and intolerance but with glimmers of acceptance thrown in for good measure, it was too short though and the three one hour episodes seemed to fly past and be forgotten about way too quickly, had it maybe lasted over say six 30min episodes instead may have allowed more people to grab on for the ride. Just as people were staring to talk about, it was gone.

One of the main ideas in season two is to expand things beyond the fictional village of Roarton, Lancashire, where most of the first show was based and where we witnessed first-hand the after effect of The Rising on a small rural community. As well as exploring other places in the new season the village itself is opened up more as we spread across some more of the community bringing in the local high school, doctors and a small bed and breakfast establishment. Most of the drama still revolves however around the Walker family home. The opening episode of season two kicks off with a view showing a little more urban setting than were used to, complete with hard edged, graffiti covered, concrete tower blocks. We then return to the relative safety of our ‘friendly’ rural village. Well, friendly it isn’t, as we know from the experience of teenager Kieren "Ren" Walker and young soldier Rick, a young man in his same class at school, was killed in Afghanistan. Both are now Partially Deceased Syndrome (PDS) sufferers… well yep, they’re good old zombies and in a place just as susceptible to

violence and danger as any urban city would be. There isn’t really any hiding regardless of their cosmetics and contact lenses to help them ‘pass’ for normal. Almost a year has passed since the events of last season and the Walker family are trying to hold things together, trying desperately to learn from their mistakes. For Kieren and sister Jem, things haven’t really changed, things are probably just as distant between them as they were last time, they’re trying, on the surface anyway, just not sure its working. Returning from season one are Nurse Wilson and son Philip, Kenneth Cranham’s Vicar Oddie, Ricky Tomlinson’s Ken Burton. The still spirited Amy, played awesomely by Emily Bevan, is another PDS sufferer and was Kieren's hunting partner prior to him getting his ‘treatment’ to make him safe for human interaction. While our hero struggles with his situation and his actions when he was a freely feeding zombie, Amy is much less affected by what she did in her untreated state. In season two she lines up on the opposite side to Kieren when the battle lines are drawn. Adding to the cast, and soon an integral part of the drama, are recently elected MP Maxine Martin (Wunmi Mosaku), and WB Yeats-quoting Undead Prophet disciple Simon (Emmett Scanlan). In The Flash still has very much a look and feel of those old classic ‘Northern’ shows but one that has been dragged kicking and screaming into the ‘twenty-tens’. The show itself isn’t really touching on new themes, just using a ‘pop’ subject matter to readdress those ideas. It is still all about those old favourite’s segregation, bigotry, fear… yada yada. According to writer Mitchell though season two will however try to focus on championing faith, be it in himself... in others... or in an idea.

DVDREVIEWS German anarchist Emile Rottmayer who is serving life in this super tech hell hole, his role is pretty much set up as Stallone’s light comic relief. I found is a surprisingly good watch to see them together and you can see onscreen that they appear to have developed a convincing rapport. The men start meeting every day and over time devise a plan to bust out, putting Ray’s talent for studying prison patterns and Emile’s many contacts to good use as they plot their escape. Cold sadistic warden Hobbes (Jim Caviezel) has the pleasure of detain both as a strict Caligula figure. Vincent D’Onofrio is Ray’s nervous business partner, Amy Ryan as Ray’s friend and Sam Neill’s efforts in his small role as the prison doctor are all pretty solid and enjoyably good. Escape Plan at its heart is an action movie but between the lines there is so much more that helps lift the move above a lot of other lesser movies out there.

scape Plan throws together Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in a couple of roles that to be fair could have just as easily suited them back in their hay day, being locked for a while seemed to be where Stallone was most comfortable with a few under his belt anyway from Escape to Victory, Rambo, Lock Up and Tango and Cash all having him under lock and key in some form or another.

I like this movie, it’s a proper movie with no prisoners taken (forgive the pun), there is nothing pretty about it, it’s not looking for any favours, no pleas for sympathy or nostalgic glances. The movie itself stands on its own without the heavy hitters and succeeds in bringing the two world of Stallone and Schwarzenegger together without ruining booths’ individual attractions. Despite their similarities and being massive 80’s stars responsible for more or less BLOCKBUSTER releases, there is quite a noticeable difference between the two actors. Even in his strongest roles Stallone relies on being vulnerable, he’s about the drama, the pain and the suffering. Schwarzenegger prefers to portray the indestructible aspect where he can’t get hurt no matter what… so although the same in many ways, still offering completely different sides to the coin. After their respective breaks Stallone was the first to hit the screen again with old favourites like Rambo and Rocky, then the Expendables and a few other non-descripts but this is the first non-franchise film from him that warrants any real kudos. As such it’s definitely a Stallone film with Arnie very much in the supporting role being one of his first outings since retiring as a US Governor. Stallone plays Ray Breslin, a super smart cookie who heads a team specialising in testing security at various government detention facilities, basically finding their weaknesses before the real prisoners do. He enters each facility undercover, and then basically breaks out. When he agrees to take a job testing a CIA prison thing kinda go pear shaped as he is basically kidnapped and has to rely on his wits and expertise rather than his support team to help him break loose. his is one of those weird films I was expecting to hate. I’d heard so many bad things, so I was all kinds of shocked when I actually enjoyed it. Not just a little bit either; this is a really good fun film. I mean you have one of the most hated people for no reason on the internet Ryan Reynolds being funny and charming but you know, dead. You have Jeff Bridges being a dead cowboy, I mean what’s not to like about that. It’s basically Men in Black but with ghosts.

Okay there are no good roles for women in this film. I mean Mary Louise-Parker is an interesting character until they try to hint at some weird love thing with Jeff Bridges, which doesn’t really work. I mean what’s wrong with having a strong female character who doesn’t turn into a flirty love thing for a male character. I mean its 2014 right? She is completely underused to such a level that it’s actually annoying. But alas, they would probably have just had some more weird love things happening so maybe it’s better she wasn’t. Oh and the special effects are horrendous too. I mean they look like they’re from Men in Black, but like you’re watching Men in Black now. The kind of thing that would have looked great in the 90s but these days doesn’t cut it. Kevin Bacon turns up as a bad guy and we also see the big bully older brother from Home Alone make an appearance. It’s good, it’s fun. It will in no way change your life. It won’t win any awards but if you’re just looking for a laugh then this is the film for you. Apparently there’s a 3D bluray of it too but I’m not sure you’d want the bad effects that much in your face. Erp.

ard Rush is one of those films you instantly reach for on the straight to video shelf. Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Vinnie Jones should make for an excellent low budget action film but somewhere along the way someone decided this film should have a message. The fools.

Okay so normally a plot in these films wouldn’t go amiss but this time it just tries to be Goodfellas. The problem with this is that we already have the rather awesome Goodfellas, and it’s not as confused as this film. It follows Daniel Bonjour as he tries to become a big thing in the drug industry. He does a voiceover speaking about the problems with drugs in America like it has a message. But we don’t watch this kind of film for a message. Films with messages about drugs are great don’t get me wrong but it just doesn’t sit well in this film. Especially when the main character can’t make up his mind if he wants in our out of the drug trade and of that keeps messing things up for himself as he jumps from one thing to another. It ends up being a little frustrating, the known cast keep the film together a little but it does fall into too many stereotypes, including the female lead having an on and off again thing with Lundgren which in no way adds to the plot and makes no sense considering the other things that happen in the film. I’d stay away from it if you can, the action scenes are few and far between so it’s not like we even have those to fall back on. The only good thing in it is Gianni Capaldi running around talking in a Scottish accent and beating people up. Utter Guff.

anny Trejo seems to be making a career out of decent straight to video films and this is another one to his bow. Dead in Tombstone follows a gang of brigands led by the giant Mexican who set out to rescue his half-brother Red (Anthony Michael Hall) from the gallows. Inside Red has heard of a rather outstanding amount of gold which will be an easy hit for the gang. So they head out to seek their fortune. Unfortunately for Trejo his brother has decided that he needs to die. So after the bank robbery Red and the rest of the gang shoot Trejo to death. Well that’s gratitude for you.

So he finds himself in hell with a rather funky looking Mickey Rourke who looks more bizarre every time you see him. He’s the devil and makes a deal with Trejo so he can kill the 6 traitors who killed him. Next thing you know he’s back in the land of the living, kicking some serious ass. This film could easily have been the new Crow film. I really wouldn’t have minded since it pretty much follows the same concept. The acting is great throughout as you would expect from Hall and Trejo. I mean Hall was in the Breakfast Club, it just doesn’t get better than that… Apparently. It’s definitely worth checking out. It looks like quite a decent amount of money has been spent creating the look for the film and it hits all the right notes. It’s everything you expect it to be and in no way disappoints. It won’t be long before you can get it for a fiver if you can’t already so it’s definitely worth checking out.

age is an exceptionally low budget horror film from Christopher Witherspoon that looks like it was made with a camera he bought from Dixons. Alarmingly despite its incredibly low budget it turns out to be one of the best horror films I’ve seen so far this year.

You follow writer Rick Crawford as he heads off to split up with his bit on the side. He’s decided it’s time to stay with his wife who is clearly far too good with him since she’s been keeping him the entire time he’s been trying to write. Anyway, after this meeting a mysterious biker appears and begins to terrorise him on his way home. The first 45 minutes are very much like the Steven Spielberg classic Duel as the biker menaces Rick while he tries to get home. It even mentions the film Duel in a rather clever moment in a garage. The film then moves on as he finally makes it home only for the biker to appear at his door and yet again make impose himself on Rick, this time including his wife. But why has Rick not called the cops as most rational people would. Well he’s worried that the guy just so happens to be his bit on the side’s crazy ex and doesn’t want his wife to find out. Well he should have thought of that before playing hide the sausage really. It’s such a great film if you can get past how cheap it looks. The effects work well when required and the acting is pretty decent considering the lack of money spent on it. Okay I may be mentioning the money a lot here but you can’t go into a film like this expecting the kind of effects you’d get from the usual Hollywoodland affair. Which is a shame, cause it’s a far superior film to most of the rubbish horror that’s coming at us from Hollywoodland these days.

ritten and directed by Andrew Niccol, ‘In Time’ tells of a time in the future when people live by selling and gambling with their life.

People are aware of how long they have left thanks to a Day-Glo digital clock embedded in their forearms, it ticks down the years, months, days and hours until you end up at zero, then you die. Time can be bought, sold and traded between people and interfaces and the markets in time are open 24/7. Genetic engineers have come up with a system which is used to switch off everyone’s body clock when they reach 25 years old. People then have just one more year to live. With the ability to then recharge your time clock in return for work/money/trades/gifts etc. people can actually live well beyond their years but remain in a permanent 25 years old state. Will Salas (Justin Timberlake) is part of this bizarre unexplained world and seems to have a knack of finds himself on the wrong side of the law. He meets man named Henry Hamilton (Matt Bomer), who is 100 years old and has another century tucked safely in the bank. Henry is tired of living and as their conversation drags ion into the night Will falls asleep and awakes in the morning with an extra century on his clocked up on his arm. Looking out the window he’s sees Henry getting ready to jump off a nearby bridge so he tried to stop him but is just a fraction too late. As is our hero’s luck it is all caught on security cameras which somehow make it seem like he is a suspect in the man’s death. As the plot unfolds Will teams up with an unlikely partner in Sylvia Weis (Amanda Seyfried), the daughter of the richest man alive, Philippe Weis (Vincent Kartheiser), and we all know what money means? Time, so he’s basically immortal. Despite not being a great film, and offering nothing ground breaking, it is actually a really enjoyable outing and Timberlake keeps pushing out OK performances with some true screen presence. outh Park: The Stick of Truth. When I first heard about it I was as giddy as a child on Christmas morning. In fact, I felt like Christmas had come early, and my birthday. I was super excited about it and then a memory hit me. I remembered playing a South park game way back when the PlayStation 1 was the greatest commercial gaming console on the planet – and I don’t remember being that impressed by it. But the Stick of Truth more than makes up for any shortcomings those previous games might have had! This is South Park as you’d expect it! The in-game exploits are exactly what you’d expect from the TV show. So if you don’t like the TV show then don’t buy or play this fame – you’ll just upset yourself. That being said, if you found anything that South Park has done before to be even the slightest bit distasteful or offensive then this game really isn’t for you either. You’d think that by now most people wouldn’t be that shocked by anything that South Park could do now because, well, it’s South Park, that’s what they do, that’s what they’ve been doing for 17 seasons! But Stick of Truth is taking everything about South Park to a whole new level – and personally I love every minute of it!

I remember way back in the late 90’s having to sneak round to my friend’s house to watch South Park because my mum wouldn’t let me watch it. I’m sure that even now, despite being a 20-something, that my mum would rather I not play Stick of Truth because of its foul language, graphic violence, ridiculous plot, over-the-top everything, unnecessarily offensive actions and quests, sexual innuendo and excessive flatulence - but how could I not play a game with all that in it? Let’s start with the gameplay mechanics. As a role-playing game it’s brilliant – it has everything you’d want! A customisable character, full interaction with characters and settings and multiple quests are all at your fingertips! As with most successful RPG’s, Stick of Truth’s quests are split into two groups; those that advance the narrative and those that are just for fun or that are used to unlock extras, such as levelling up. You’ll learn all sorts of things as you explore the entire town of South Park (different types of fart attacks are one of them) and you’ll meet or see virtually every character that has appeared in the TV show. You have to manage your inventory and select the right items for the right quests – it really is a great RPG all the way through. You can even chose your party or team from existing South Park characters and listen to how they interact with you. Cartman and Butters are always personal favourites of mine. There are a few technical errors and annoyances throughout the game such as some of the loading screen seem to last a little too long, but there is nothing that would interrupt your enjoyment of the game. about 10-12 hours of narrative driving game-play, but due to the sheer number of side-quests and other silly bits and bobs that are going on in the background of the game, you’ll be kept entertained for many more hours once the main quest of the game has been completed. The narrative of the game pretty much follows straight on from the ‘Black Friday’ trilogy in the latest season of the TV series. All of the kids in South Park are fighting over the so-called ‘Stick of Truth’ that was actually seen in the final episode of the ‘Black Friday’ trilogy. It is thought (by the kids) to control space and time. Basically, you are the New Kid in town who is thrust full-force into the world of South Park, which seems to have transformed into (in the imaginations of the kids) the result of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones having a messed up, kinky one night stand. The Stick of Truth is so authentically South Park. The injokes are in abundance without ever seeming forced or just there for the sake of it. Matt Stone and Trey Parker (the creators and writers of South prk) have basically pulled their combined experience and inspiration from 17 series of the TV show and worked really hard on this perfect present to the hard-core South Park fans. Even those who haven’t kept up-to-date with the series will find the narrative and gameplay not only hilarious, but true to the idea of what South Park is. One of the best things about it is how it looks. It looks exactly like the TV show, which helps add to its authenticity and already gained favourable points with the fans before they had even played it! The Stick of Truth is smart, silly (in fact it’s downright ridiculous in the best way), authentic, satirical – basically it’s a South Park fan’s dream come true! The creators really understand their audience and have managed to create a game that is practically universally praised despite its content. The only qualm I have about it is the selfcensorship of some scenes in EU countries. That being said, they have compensated for this by adding some satirical and hilarious alternative scenes regarding censorship and the bodies who dubbed the scenes too indecent for European gamers. Good on you South Park! Insolent to the end! After a delayed release date, South Park: The Stick of Truth is finally out! The wait is finally over, so don’t freeze yourself! or one that has never played any previous Thief games before, I never was excited for the remake, but after some pretty decent trailers that made the game look promising I thought I would at least give it a shot.

You play as Garret, a master thief… of useless junk. First of all since I have never played a Thief game before I had the intention of playing with the same game style as I use for Assassin’s Creed, oh how I was wrong with that. The movement of garret is too clunky and flow less to match the likes of Ezio, you can’t scale buildings only boxes or ledges can be scaled which in this day and age is ridiculous, pretty much every part of this game just made me want to play Assassin’s Creed instead, that or Dishonoured. But I stuck it out and played it how Thief is meant to be played. I should get the most frustrated part of this game for me out the way first. The combat in this game is ridiculous, fair enough it’s a stealth game and you should avoid combat and all that, but if you get caught out the only option available is to pretty much run a hide. There aren’t any fancy takedowns or counters to drop guards whenever you get into a bit of trouble. Well there is a takedown option, but that can only be executed if the target is stunned or dazed, plus there is also

a stealth takedown option but if you ever do get into a scuffle your only means of attack is by literally flicking a wooden stick at them, I’ve never seen a combat system so dull in my life and it is just one animation too! It’s as if they didn’t even try to make a decent combat system. You also get a dodge manoeuvre instead of a block button (or why not both!) which none times out of ten doesn’t work so it’s pretty useless overall. So my advice is never get into a confrontation with any guards. Ever. With that said it is quite fortunate that the running and hiding part is the easiest thing ever in this game because the enemy UI is horrible as well. If you’re spotted and manage to hide guards will give up looking for you in seconds and go about their business; they don’t check hiding spots such as cupboards unless they see you go into them, even if the only hiding spot in the room is a cupboard they’ll just walk about the room then go “Ah he must of got away”. There is no depth at all the to stealth part of this game if being spotted has absolutely no consequences. As you sneak around you use darkness and shadows to your advantage by turning off light switches and putting out candles but it never seems dark enough to hide in because you can see that the shadows wouldn’t conceal anything but that doesn’t stop you because poor eye sight does seem to be a requirement to be a guard in this city. The Thief part of the game as well never really comes into play, the majority of your

loot will be ashtrays, combs and cutlery. You don’t feel like Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, you take anything that’s shiny wherever you see it, so you just feel you’re stopping people from having nice hair or eating their dinner. But stealing items gives you in game currency to buy upgrades for Garret such as increasing your abilities for your bow and acquiring new gadgets that allow you to traverse through grates and such that previously would have been off limits. This part is just for PS4 users because this is the most difficult part about Thief and its selecting and equipping items. This is so painstakingly frustrating that I would just give up and not bother with whatever I was going to do, it uses the touchpad of the PS4’s Dualshock 4 controller and it just doesn’t do it any justice, you have to use this to select different types of arrow heads or regain some health and focus as well. But On every other system it works fine so it’s like they wanted to have the touchpad function in some way for the game. Ironically, I wouldn’t even steal this game, it’s that much of a flop. The game seems unfinished in some areas and even outdated. You just get the feeling of I could do all of this in Assassin’s Creed but do it even better and have more fun doing it.

his is very late but I never got this game when it first came out due to all the online issues but here’s my quick review of SimCity anyway having just picked up the singler player version.

I was just a kid when I played a SimCity game all those years ago and it wasn’t really the easiest game to play as a child. So with the game having a really horribly bad release I was reluctant to play it, but now with a single player mode now available I thought let’s give it a try. Right from the get-go the new SimCity is a lot easier, with a quick and simple tutorial you are shown how to maintain and grow a successful city. Building stuff has never been simpler or looked better with basically you zoning areas for homes, shops or factories and they initially take care of themselves

as usual. The difficult part though is paying attention to demands of the three types of residents that reside in your city. Low, Medium and High Wealth sim’s require equal shops and residential areas for their budget, so placing Low, Medium and High wealth attractions near house’s or shops will create and attract certain civilians.

Playing online you can join other players in regions and begin building your city and ask people for services for your city and trade services in return, by this I mean basically sharing and selling your resources. With the single player mode it’s really up to you to build these neighbouring cities within your region.

Bad thing in the new single player mode is that the overall areas for creating your city are incredibly small so don’t try and fit everything into one city. What you’re meant to do is to make your city and then specialize it to customize your city’s economy and differentiate it from others. It’s a nice touch both for variety and replay ability and the decision to limit the reserves of some resources such as oil or coal forces you to prepare for the inevitable crisis when you run dry and have picked clean all the resources. So with wise planning you can safely convert an oil-based city into a casino-driven, tourist hub. Much of SimCity’s challenges lie in situations like this, making a definite lean toward more realism.

Overall the game does seem promising at the beginning but quickly reaches your limit of building fairly quickly and you then have to rely on yourself to build other cities which can take you out of the mood to play, so online play does seem like the only way forward and I suppose a rather nice option. The game can still be super addictive at times if only the maps weren’t so damn small then the SimCity would be a great game, however still nowhere near as much fun as its grandkids The Sims.

onty Python’s Life of Brian, also known as Life of Brian, is a 1979 British comedy film starring and written by the comedy group Monty Python (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin), and directed by Jones. It tells the story of Brian Cohen (played by Chapman), a young Jewish man who is born on the same day as, and next door to, Jesus Christ and is subsequently mistaken for the Messiah.

The film contains themes of religious satire that were controversial at the time of its release, drawing accusations of blasphemy and protests from some religious groups. Thirty-nine local authorities in the UK either imposed an outright ban, or imposed an X (18 years) certificate, effectively preventing the film from being shown, as the distributors said the film could not be shown unless it was unedited and carried the original AA (14) certificate. Some countries, including Ireland and Norway, banned its showing, with a few of these bans lasting decades. The film makers used such notoriety to benefit their marketing campaign, with posters stating “So funny it was banned in Norway!” The film was a box-office success, grossing fourth-highest of any film in the United Kingdom in 1979.
