o, like Gerard Way, the frontman for My Chemical Romance, The Black Lights singer James McCulloch also has a love of comics. So much so that he has just released a comic of his very own. City of Lost Souls was officially launched at July’s Glasgow Comic Con. Under the guise of MooMac Comics James puts his writing skills to good use over the amazing graphics provided by MooMac partner Janine van Moosel, an Illustrator and Portrait artist based in the Netherlands. City of Lost Souls is described as ‘a dark urban fantasy adult comic book series’ “Matt is desperately trying to find the city of lost souls. Because if he doesn't, he will be haunted by the souls of the 12 people he murdered forever. Well, that is at least until the Soul hunters that are stalking them catch up with him... and that is not a fate worth thinking about! The trouble is, the fabled place has never been found before and might not even exist. If that was not enough for Matt to handle, the politics of the bored Soul collectors could throw more than a few spanners in the works. Fast paced, dark and often violent this comic book is not for the young uns! Matts struggle to come to terms with the horrors of his actions and his road to redemption make for compelling storytelling.” Grab you copy locally from Waterstones in the Livi shopping centre or order one online @ http://www. moomac.moonfruit.com/ Hopefully we’ll have a full review at some point in the future but so far our pre-order copy hasn’t arrived yet…? MUSICREVIEW

very year in Moffat's scenic Raehills Meadows, something truly spectacular takes place. Eden is one of the most welcoming, family friendly and vibrant of small festivals and boasts some of the most diverse music, art and performance in the Scottish festival circuit. Find yourself in the garden of Eden and you'll find yourself in exotic and decorative spaces, surrounded by beautiful people, all manner of workshops & activities and a feast of energetic musicians and DJs. This year saw the biggest and wildest party yet...

Having attended Eden last year, I was impressed with the speed the festival appeared to be growing. This year almost Page 6

twice as many campers inhabited the campsite, now a mix of smiling hippies and raving Buckfast lovers; what was once a small and humble affair had expanded into a larger extravaganza with new areas of the site to explore along with old familiar favourites such as the cycle powered reggae tent and the Vishnu Lounge - a chillout tent where you can lay back and relax in a bathtub or swing in a hammock. Aside from the music, it's these unique spaces that make a trip to Eden truly memorable. On the first day I witnessed everything from hypnotic didgeridoos to the bourbonsoaked blues of Edinburgh band, The Black Diamond Express. Intriguing and alive with charisma, frontman 'Jack of Diamonds' held the audience captivated as the band played effortlessly and with incredible style through a flawless set which from a personal viewpoint stood alone as the musical highlight of the weekend. To add to a line-up abundant with Scottish talent, performers from further afield came to play in the garden and join in the merrymaking; Brighton party band, Duncan JULY 2014 - issue (40)

Disorderly And The Scallywags provided the audience with good vibes and dancing, as did none other than Happy Mondays' very own Bez. On top of this, Eden has no shortage of Reggae and Jungle DJs and across the weekend I found that much of my time was spent dancing to the likes of Edinburgh producer and DJ, Escape Roots Sound. Ska outfit, Victorian Trout Conspiracy drew a blissful weekend to a close on Sunday evening with a lively set brimming with enthusiasm. Their energy and attitude projected itself onto the crowd, resulting in the best possible send off - high spirited and manic. Eden showcases some of the most varied and unparalleled performances around. For those who prefer the smaller festivals with a slightly warmer, intimate and friendly vibe than the majority of large festivals, Eden will leave you elated. TOP 5rnSUMMER e v i t a alte SONGS ROCKAWAY BEACH - RAMONES Rockaway Beach was taken from the American punk rock band Ramones’ 1977 album, Rocket to Russia. Written by bassist Dee Dee Ramone, in the style of the Beach Boys and early surf rock bands, the song is about Rockaway Beach in Queens, USA, where Dee Dee liked to spend time. Guitarist Johnny Ramone claimed that Dee Dee was “the only real beachgoer” in the group. It was the Ramones’ highest-charting single in their career, peaking at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100.

CALIFORNIA WAITING - KINGS OF LEON California Waiting is the fourth single taken from the Youth and Young Manhood album by Kings of Leon. An alternate version of the song appears on their debut release, the EP Holy Roller Novocaine. This version was recorded in a rush to finish the record. The band didn’t like the outcome, so they recorded a new version, which is found on Youth and Young Manhood. However, on Kings of Leon’s VH1 Storytellers performance, Caleb Followill stated before playing California Waiting that “We kind of sabotaged it on our album, and tried to play it really punk rock. It was better on the EP I think.”

Island in the Sun is the 2nd single taken from Weezer’ self-titled 2001 album Weezer. The song was not originally planned to be on the album, but producer Ric Ocasek fought for its inclusion. It was a successful radio single and perhaps the band’s biggest hit ever outside of the United States, reaching No. 31 in the UK. There are two different videos for the track, the first ‘Mexican wedding’ shows Weezer playing the song at a Mexican couple’s wedding reception with the groom played by actor/singer Tony Gracia. Version 2 ‘Animals’ features the band playing with various wild animals on a supposedly remote hill (though it was actually filmed a short distance outside of Los Angeles, thought to be in the hills near Simi Valley). Only Brian Bell, Rivers Cuomo, and Pat Wilson appear in this video, as bassist Mikey Welsh had left the band shortly before shooting.

1979 - THE SMASHING PUMPKINS 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins was released in 1996 as the second single from their third studio album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, written by frontman Billy Corgan, it features loops and samples that were uncharacteristic of previous Smashing Pumpkins songs. The song was written as a coming of age story by Corgan. In the year 1979, Corgan was 12 and this is what he considered his transition into adolescence. The song was nominated for the Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the Grammy Awards, and won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Alternative Video. The song appears in Grand Theft Auto IV on the station Liberty Rock Radio 97.8, is also a playable song in Guitar Hero World Tour and an instrumental version is played during the end credits of Gran Turismo 5.

FEEL GOOD HIT OF THE SUMMER - QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE

Queens of the Stone Age’s ‘Feel Good Hit of the Summer’ is a song written by band members Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri. It is the opening track of their second album, Rated R, and the second single to be released from it. Feel Good Hit of the Summer had particular attention drawn to it due to the song’s focus on drugs. Despite this, critical reception to the song was generally positive. Josh Homme claimed the song was conceived after his three-day Millennium party. The song’s lyrics are merely a list of drugs repeated throughout. The drugs listed in the verses are nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol, with cocaine mentioned throughout the chorus. Homme has hinted that the song is a direct reference to the band’s stoner rock label.

ROVINJ - CROATIA

It’s no wonder they call Rovinj the pearl of the Istrian peninsula. Its Venetian old town spreads out across a magnificent oval-shaped peninsula, and little artist workshops make this a thriving cultural hub. Fine-dining restaurants are tucked away on steep narrow streets, while chic lounge bars line the waterside. As for the coastline, it’s backed by dense pine forests and dotted with tiny shingle coves. More than 550 kilometres separates north Croatia from the south, but the climate is surprisingly uniform across the country. Along the coast, you can expect a Mediterranean climate made up of long hot summers and mild winters. The best time to take a holiday here is between early June and late September. At this time of year, temperatures on the coast and around the islands range from the mid-twenties to the low thirties. When it comes to rainfall, you can expect no more than 3 to 6 showery days a month. (Thomson Holidays)

ALAÇATI - TURKEY Alaçatı is a charming little town that has managed to become a top holiday spot bu still managed to preserve its historical, architectural, original structure and hasn’t lost its innocence. The limestone buildings that formed out of old Greek houses have created the prettiest small charming hotels of Alaçatı. http://explorealacati.com/en/

In fact, over the years, it’s taken home accolades for everything from its fabulous diving and great golf resorts to its thrilling attractions and sweeping beaches. Today, the Sunshine State is the world leader when it comes to theme parks. There are no less than 15, including 6 Disney creations, and other household names like Universal Studios Florida®, SeaWorld® Orlando and Busch Gardens® Tampa Bay. TOP 5 SUMMER FOODS 2

FRUIT WITH YOGHURT

BAKED POTATO/PASTA SALAD

Is an ideal combination for breakfast when the weather is really hot weather. Choose fruits with a high water content to help maintain your body fluid levels which are be lost faster the more you sweat, the body’s mechanism for cooling down in the heat.

Carbohydrate-rich foods can help to combat heat exhaustion. Eating regular small, starchy carbohydrate snacks at point thoughout the day, like pitta breads, help to keep your body’s blood-sugar and energy levels even. Baked beans, rice, fruit, yoghurt and milk are other good carbohydrate foods.

Bio yoghurts can promote friendly gut bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus. This protects against food poisoning, cases of which dramatically increase during hot temperatures when it is difficult to keep food fresh.

Spicy foods, which might seem strange in hot weather, such as curries and chillies are good at stimulating your heat receptors in the mouth, which increase circulation and kick off sweating, which as we know, cools the body down.

MARINATED MEATS ON BARBECUES

WATERMELON

Marinades reduce the levels of cancer-risk chemicals being produced when meats are charcoaled black. It is thought that the ingredients in most common marinades are high in cancerfighting antioxidants. These include vinegar, citrus juices, herbs, spices and olive oil.

As well as helping keep your body cool (by allowing you to sweat more,) staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. Getting fluid into you body doesn’t always mean drinking, you can eat it too. Watermelon is great for delivering skin-protecting lycopene, but being 92 percent water they are also excellent rehydraters. Research has shown that eating foods that have a high water content helps keep you more satisfied using less calories. Drinking water with foods has less of an effect.

5

GREEN TEA Green tea is an ideal replacemant for plain water to supplement your hydration when the temrature starts to soar. It’s certainly more exciting than water and studies have suggested that green tea may even be helpful in fighting cancer and heart disease, lowering cholesterol, revving your metabolism and even keeping dementia at bay says nutrition and fitness expert Erin Palinski-Wade. If drinking a hot drink doesn’t seem like a good idea when your hot try it cold with ice or streight from the chill cabinet, none of its nutritional benefits are compromised.

s Senior Personal Trainer and studio manager at TOD Coaching and Fit Inc Studio Gym near Edinburgh, I come across similar problems with (almost) every fitness oriented person I talk to, the question usually arises (or doesn’t as the case may be) “What should I be eating?” Nutrition has always been my passion. Page 30

Away back in the day before nutritional qualifications, when you were either a dietitian or you weren’t, I was reading and researching nutrition and how it affected your health and well-being. I was interested in how people could be killed or cured with the food they ate, how it could affect weight, mood, skin, muscle, you name it, it was all relevant.

I weight trained, ran, cycled and hill walked, because I liked to do it. It was about this time that I started playing around with nutrition to see how it affected me (I still do this to this day, as I will never recommend someone do something with out trying it myself). How I JULY 2014 - issue (40)

could lose or gain weight easily by altering my input and output. I became a vegetarian and my skin suffered as I became low in Vit. B12 because I didn’t understand about balancing my diet properly.

Basically nutrition breaks down into two parts, macronutrients, the big essential ones, proteins, carbs & fats, and micronutrients, still essential, but required in smaller amounts, these are vitamins and minerals. Gradually I learned that nutrition could cure illnesses, reverse chronic health problems, improve fertility, make you stronger and faster, and make you bigger and smaller. As I was also a keen ‘horsey’ person too, I discovered the diet of a racehorse seemed to be much better balanced than most humans! It contained such things as alfalfa, which we now call a ‘super food’. Alfalfa has been used as an herbal medicine for over 1,500 years. Alfalfa is high in protein, calcium, plus other minerals, vitamins in the B group, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. We can now buy this for ourselves as a supplement, or get this in a juice bar drink at most shopping centers. If you are constantly ill, tired, lethargic and generally run down, it is time to ask yourself “what fuel am I giving my body?” I usually here “Oh, I eat loads of protein and no carbs” or “I’m

trying to lose this last 2kgs for this fight next week” or “I’m cutting” (?! For what they don’t know). In my experience many will look to their training (I’m not doing enough), energy drinks full of caffeine, and protein shakes before addressing their over-all diet. Many, not all I hasten to add, amateur athletes who train for Iron Man, fun runs, marathons, triathlons, do not consider the fuel their body requires, and the quality of the fuel they consume. Which meal do you think is optimal nutrition for your body to fuel it for it’s next work out? A big Mac and fries with a diet drink, or chicken, broccoli and a baked potato with a large salad drizzled with olive oil? They may have the same calorie content, but break it down and the body with be able to utilise the latter much more effectively. I too was one of the, ‘a calorie is a calorie’ brigade till I wondered why my health was breaking down and I looked at how the body metabolises the nutrients we feed it.

n the glamorous world of the newly qualified (or not so newly qualified as the case may be) personal trainer, there can be an emphasis on training techniques and bits of needless equipment to make the trainer look good. Many trainers will not even consider educating their clients on nutrition but, as nutrition will influence 80 – 90% of the clients expected training/weight loss outcome, it is, and always will be, an essential part of training. Lets look at one sport in particular; in the fighting world extreme diets are common. According to Ben Coomber of Body Type Nutrition;

“They are usually very low carb, very low fat and very low calories. They will use weight loss methods like sauna suits and restrict water intake, and generally avoid other key nutrients the body needs. Yes, fight sports are weight dependent, and fighters need to get to their fighting weight, but a protocol that is too extreme over too long a period of time, means the fighter has not been taking care of himself”

LESSON 1

An extreme diet that is practiced all year round rather than for specific goals and events only exist for one reason, a lack of education and understanding. I’ve also witnessed daily diets that can be described as extreme year round, even at the elite level.

Fight sports are stuck in the dark ages, with some theories and protocols still being churned out rather than updated. Too many fighters eat low carb but are training twice a day 5 to 7 days a week. Fighter training and sport is extremely demanding.

at is essential. If you don’t have adequate fat in your diet you cannot manufacture testosterone effectively. Testosterone is created from saturated fat and cholesterol. And what foods contain both, red meat. The one thing most fighters snub in favour of chicken, white fish and other lean meats. Yet it is a food source that is going to have a brilliant effect on our male hormones; protein, testosterone producing fats, zinc, iron, CLA, perfect. If that’s not enough to convince you what about this; The lower your testosterone levels the

more susceptible you are to a whole host of diseases. You’ll lose fat slower, your sleep will suffer, you’re libido will be low, you will be less aggressive (you are a fighter right?), the list goes on.

So what’s the morale of the story? Plan. Plan your cut intelligently. If you are doing things to an extreme degree then your cut has not been well thought out, you haven’t been tracking the variables and now your only resort is an extreme one. If you’re going to cut calories cut all your calories, so from every macronutrient (protein, fat and carbohydrate). Don’t go extreme on

any particular one; you need carbohydrates for maximum performance, protein for constant recovery and repair, and fat to keep on top of optimal male output. Be diligent, be intelligent, be precise, then you wont be running around your local park at 5am in a bin bag and looking forward to a egg white omelet and one Ryvita for breakfast! 22 JUMP STREET Victoria Tickle GoGuide Magazine Contributor

Page 46

JULY 2014 - issue (40)

I

t’s not often that sequels can hold a candle to their predecessors, but ’22 Jump Street’ doesn’t just hold a candle to ’21 Jump Street’, it lights a fire under it! Now whilst it’s true that ‘22 Jump Street’ could never stand on its own (it relies a lot on the fact that these relationships have already been formed in ‘21 Jump Street’) and can never be considered or thought of as a stand-alone film, it’s actually a really good film and a brilliant sequel that the original deserved. It’s is a literal laugh-out-loud film from the very beginning, right through to the very end and it doesn’t exactly break the fourth wall, but it certainly taps on it, as there are many hints to the idea that they are basically just remaking the first movie again. Even though (when you really break the movie down) it is pretty much exactly the same movie, nothing seems repetitive, nothing seems forced and most of all, nothing is boring. You’d be forgiven if you thought that this film was going to be a rushed, over-the-top and overly cheesy sequel made just for a simple cash grab – because I thought that too. But I’m really glad to be wrong. The same amount of passion, energy and thought that went into making the first film has gone into the making of the sequel. It is handled great and is a real treat for the fans of not only the original TV series, but also those who watched the first film. Never has a film been more bromantic than this one, and it makes for brilliant viewing. Tatum and Hill have the effortless chemistry on screen hat make them believable in an unbelievable setting and really help the audience ease into the film. Set in a university rather than a high school, the typical scenes that you’d expect to see are there (hilariously portrayed I might add) such as the stereotypical cliques that universities have and scenes with other Jump Street officers. But there are plenty of other scenes that allow ‘22 Jump Street’ to be different enough from the first one so that it doesn’t feel like a complete rip off. It is both the same movie, yet a completely different one to ‘21 Jump Street’. This movie has some incredibly high expectations to live up to, as ’21 Jump Street’ was so undeniably popular and funny, and I’m glad to say that it really lives up to those expectations, and even at times surpasses them. This movie will have you howling with laughter right from the get-go, just as the first one did. The settings and costumes are so set in reality that it makes the ridiculousness of the exploits of the characters that much funnier. The contrast between reality and fantasy is both obvious, yet somehow strangely blurred. The script is absolutely phenomenal and really delivers the jokes, which are of a much higher quality than originally expected. This is one film whose trailer does it no justice – and I think that was a really smart move by the marketers. There have been plenty of films that have had over-hyped trailers or (worst of all) put all the best parts in the trailer *cough* A Million Ways to die in the West *cough*, but by selling ‘22 Jump Street’ short, it has made the film an even better surprise. People were always going to watch this sequel, especially fans of the first movie, regardless of whether or not the trailer was good. So by having a mediocre trailer, the positive hype surrounding this film has been amplified when people actually see it and talk about it afterwards. Out of many of the comedies that have come out this year, this one has the rightful title of King of the Comedies, and if you haven’t already seen it, I highly recommend that you do! It is rare that any sequel does an original film justice, and considering that they have practically made the same movie

H

earing that ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ was being made into a film filled me with the familiar mix of fear and excitement that I always get when I hear that a book I’m fond of is being brought to the silver screen. The book was so perfect, so poignant and so well-crafted that I thought a film adaptation could never possibly do it any justice. But I was wrong. The film is just as beautiful, emotional and down-to-earth as the novel is and it’s still filled with just as much raw life and wonder and it is very true to the book. For those of you who have read the book, you’ll know what

Page 50

is coming, and you’ll think that you can handle it because you’ve read the book. You’ll think that you won’t cry, or bubble up. But you’re wrong. I thought that the movie version would leave me un-phased, because no acting could possibly touch the memory I have of reading the book and visualising the characters in my head. But, once again, I was wrong. I cried my eyes out to such an extent that I considered scanning a tear-stained piece of paper into the computer and submitting it for this review. This movie will have both those who read the book, and those who haven’t, hooked right from the title sequence. The storytelling is

JULY 2014 - issue (40)

beautiful and it is such a compelling story that it doesn’t need to rely on plot twists (in fact it gives you a huge spoiler in the opening lines of the film) or special effects or any other Hollywood tricks. The film relies on the brilliance of the book, written by John Green (who was in fact present for most of the filming to guide the actors through some scenes), and nothing more. Not a single scene felt forced, or out of place and the narrative flowed as smoothly as the written word does. The story follows the world of Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters as they go through life struggling with being teenagers with cancer. It is a beautiful romantic comedy that everyone should see. Now the words ‘teenage’ and ‘romantic comedy’ might put people off, especially if you’re not a teenage girl (which is clearly the target market for this film) but I highly recommend that you see this film regardless of your age or gender.

PAGE 51

MOVIEREVIEWS

This is not some Hollywood churned-out tween romantic comedy, and it certainly isn’t like ‘Twilight’ in its appeal either. This is an incredibly poignant and complex love story peppered with hard-to-handle depictions of reality. The cinematography is fantastic and really helps to bring the book to life. But perhaps the best aspect in the transition from book to film was the actors themselves. Both Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elsort (who are both in the ‘Divergent’ series as brother and sister) had a realistic and natural chemistry on screen that allowed the viewer to see them as more than just characters in a film. They became real people, their troubles became your troubles, their feelings became your feelings and they are a he part of what made this film so successful. ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ has been described as “a sick love story” and it’s only when you watch it (or have read it) that you truly understand how clever and true that statement is. This film is little short of a masterpiece and will not leave a dry eye in the house. It will most likely stand the test of time as a great example of cinema for not only teenagers, but adults too that offers more than just a simple love story and a fantasy it offers a glimpse into real life struggles, with realistic characters in a tragic, yet realistic setting. This has easily been the best film I have seen all year. It leaves blockbusters like ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Divergent’ wanting, it blows other great films, like ‘The Lego Movie’, out of the water and it is even better than fan-favourites like ‘XMEN: Days of Future Past’ or ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. Now those opinions might not reign unanimous across the board, but there will certainly be those who will agree with me to some extent that ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ is a real contender for “Film of the Year”. If you haven’t read the book yet, I highly recommend that you do because it’s a beautiful novel. If you haven’t seen the film yet, be sure to see it whilst it is still in cinemas, and if you have either read the book and/or seen the film I will leave you with this: “Okay”.

hat can I say about ‘A Million ways to die in the West’ that you haven’t already guessed by now? I’d like to say that this was a wellthought-out, funny and clever attempt at a comedy-western. I’d like to say that I found it to be better than ‘Ted’. I’d even like to say that I liked the film. But I just can’t. Before I start this review, I’d just like to point out that this isn’t a bad film; it’s just not a good one.

Page 58

After the well-deserved success of ‘Ted’, director Seth MacFarlane, of ‘Family Guy’ and ‘American Dad’ genius has turned his creative hand to a second live action film in which he has a leading role. Unfortunately, this film was a huge disappointment after ‘Ted’. It really does pain me to say this because I am a huge fan of Seth MacFarlane’s work. The plot is (for a comedy) a pretty good one. It’s the typical story of a guy trying to win his girl back with a few adult humour scenarios thrown in. The cast is a pretty solid one and the costume, set and cinematography in general were actually pretty good. So what let the film down? It’s just not that funny. Don’t get me wrong, there are some chuckleworthy scenes dotted amongst the dialogue, but considering it’s supposed to be a comedy first and foremost, it’s just not hitting the nail

on the head. The other tragedy for ‘A Million Ways to die in the West’ is that it’s suffered the same fate as a lot of comedies do; the best bits were in the previews and trailers. Do you remember how much you laughed at the trailer? Well hold on to that memory because those bits just aren’t as funny the second time round, and the rest of the film doesn’t have too many other laugh-out-loud moments. There are scenes that almost feel cringe worthy – and not in the good way. The whole movie feels like several short comedy skits that have been haphazardly put together to make one much longer skit. The quality of comedy was brought way down too, now I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with the type of humour

you’d expect from this type of film. But when it’s the only weapon in the arsenal, it gets very old very quickly. Considering the cast that was involved and the shared creative talent that they all have, this film should have been a lot better. Now don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a terrible comedy film (if you want an example of a terrible comedy movie then look no further than ‘Anchorman 2’). Like I’ve said, everything but he comedy was actually pretty good. The costumes were both spot-on and interesting to look at and seemed to suit each character (as well as the actor portraying them) well. The set design was fantastic and really helped the audience get a feel for the film and the acting itself was really good. Except, that is, for Seth MacFarlane himself. He is undoubtedly a brilliant voice actor, but his skill as an actor just doesn’t quite seem to

transfer to live action very well. It’s such as shame that the might have fallen so far, because this movie really was a misfire. It will never be better than in the trailers. Perhaps if an audience sees the film before the trailers, then there might be some more genuine laughs, but for the majority of us who have seen something to do with the film before the film itself (and this was a very well marketed film so this particular number of people will be quite small) it’s a bit of a let-down. This isn’t a long review, because there isn’t really too much to say about it. ‘A Million Ways to die in the West’ is not a bad film, but it’s nowhere near the calibre it so easily could have been or should have been. The best bits are in the trailers and previews and the jokes that weren’t aren’t up to the JULY 2014 - issue (40)

‘O

culus’, after finally being released after a yearlong delay, has received mixed reviews from both professional critics and the public. Never being one to be deterred by reviews of either allegiance, I decided to watch ‘Oculus’ and after seeing it I’m leaning more towards the positive reviews. ‘Oculus’ takes place in two different times, both in the present and 11 years earlier, yet both stories are told at the same time in via the use of flashbacks edited together in parallel. What I will say straight off-the-bat is this: this is not a horror film that will take its place in the mainstream horror movie must-watch list. This is not a ‘Saw’ or an ‘Insidious’ or even a ‘Paranormal Activity’. That being said, despite its inability to break through into mainstream cinema (for the most part) it is definitely a film worth a watch. Horror films that don’t make it to mainstream audiences are usually one of two things; really good and a hidden gem or very, very bad. But ‘Oculus’ seems to fall inside of these two binaries. It’s closer to good than bad, but it’s not quite spectacular enough to be a rare gem. With that being said, ‘Oculus’ throws a refreshing twist on a genre that is becoming increasingly more difficult to showcase originality, especially as it takes a lot more to shock and disturb audiences nowadays. The concept of a haunted mirror has been done before in horror films, almost to the point of cliché. But ‘Oculus’, whilst having a haunted mirror in its plot, uses other story telling devices to produce the main scares and effects and doesn’t rely on the creepiness of the trope to coast through its runtime. The story remains fresh with unpredictable narratives (another rare occurrence for modern day horror films) and the film doesn’t abuse things like special effects or gore to have an impact. There are some scares in the movie, both underlying, slow-moving creepy scares that crawl under your skin and keep your mind guessing, and the typical, tried-andtested and utterly expected jump scares but it is much more of an unnerving film than a “scary” one. Its plot is a lot more complex that standard horror films as well. The level of complexity is surprising, but not daunting. It’s no ‘Matrix’ or ‘Inception’ – but it’s not trying to be either. It simply makes the viewer think and question themselves and what’s going on on-screen a lot more than a typical horror would do – which in my eyes is both no bad thing, and also makes for a much more involving and exciting story. The acting is exceptional for a horror film with a relatively modest budget and a cast of relative unknowns. Even the child actors seemed seasoned, which is yet another refreshing aspect of this film. Too many times has a good film (of any genre) been ruined by child actors who can’t quite act yet. But ‘Oculus’ offers surprises in almost all aspects of its film. The cinematography was brilliantly effective, especially the use of lighting, camera angles and set design and the direction was spot on. One of the major drawbacks of this film is its timing and pace, and it is something that really will divide its audiences. It’s quite a slow film in its pacing, and it’s not dissimilar from ‘The Shining’ in this aspect. That being said, the slow pace does help build the tension and the pay-off is worth it. But a lot of people will be put off by how much of a slow-burn the film seems to be on. I would have preferred the narrative to move along with a little bit more speed, but all in all, this isn’t a bad film. My best recommendation is to watch it with people who aren’t animated viewers (by that I mean those who don’t gasp and talk to the characters onscreen as if they can hear them) and watch it at night, or make your room as dark as possible. ‘Oculus’ might not be a masterpiece, but it’s better than a lot of horror films in recent memory. BINGE VIEW SHOW: ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK SEASONS: 2

Becci Wood GoGuide Magazine Contributor

SEASON 1

O

range is the new black is a Netflix exclusive that follows respectable Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) and her sudden incarceration for a crime committed in her youth. With this middle-class, white girl, we the viewers are launched into the world of Litchfield Prison. Each episode explores an inmate’s history as it relates to the prison drama. Instead of portraying them as violent felons, many of the prisoners (true to real life) are victims of poverty and racism. Compared to Piper and her one-off crime, these stories have a lot more at stake like the children’s welfare and chances to breakout of poverty. Piper is risking her boring boyfriend and an artisanal soap-making business. And that is the biggest problem I have with this show. Piper’s story is the least interesting but is given the most screen time. Every privileged friend and relative of hers is allowed to weigh in on how her internment affects them, no matter how shallow, when the stories of the other inmates are skimmed over. Piper attracts the attention of a violent zealot who vows to kill her when she refuses to be converted. The finale ends with Piper trapped with her would-be killer and nearly killing her in self defence.

Page 70

SEASON 2

he first episode is dull. I was on tenterhooks wondering what would happen to Piper and the first episode withheld this information almost until the end. This would have been a Hitchcock-worthy attempt at suspense but, while they kept us waiting, all of the screen time was devoted to Piper as she is moved to a Chicago prison for her trial. Orange is the New Black’s strength has always been in its ensemble cast, something that becomes very noticeable when you have to watch a whiny, white girl for an hour (in Taylor Schilling’s defence, the whining was superbly acted.)

But stick with it. Once we are back in Litchfield with our old favourites and some new faces, the show returns to its quick-witted and fast-paced glory. The most formidable new inmate is Vee, who has history with a few of the inmates. Alongside Piper’s story, Vee’s crusade to gain control through smuggling contraband is mapped out over the entire of the season. Having a season-long storyline that doesn’t involve Piper is a move that makes Season 2 superior to Season One. Vee’s black gang is vying for power with the Latina kitchen staff and a gang known as ‘The Golden Girls’. The conflict brings the struggles of these women to the forefront as it exacerbates complicated relationships with the guards and as they doubt their loyalty to their gang leaders. The trademark inmate flashbacks are used to provide even greater character development. In Season 1, the flashbacks were used to get the audience to know the inmate of the week but this season we see the back-stories of characters that are well established. In particular we get to know Morello and Black Cindy, who both spent most of Season One as comedy sidekicks, whose stories are heartbreaking The season finale’s most dramatic conclusions are from the drama with Vee. She nearly kills one of the Golden Girls and tries to pin it on one of her own gang: an act that brings her world tumbling down. JULY 2014 - issue (40)

DVDREVIEWS That the female roles in Detective are under written and poorly conceived is undeniable. Michelle Monaghan’s Maggie Hart is the perfect illustration of a nagging wife in a police procedural drama. She is presented as strong willed and independent but the rest of the women and Maggie are agents of fortune, at the mercy and the whim of the male characters. Maggie attempts to set Khole up with one of her pretty young friends. Khole is bewildering as the narrative of the show. He rejects propositions from hookers and turns down the chance of developing a relationship with Maggie’s friend. Maggie tells Khole that her friend would be perfect for him and that she would provide him comfort from the job. Khole dismisses this out of hand and informs Maggie that men are not afraid to be alone. The implication being that women are prepared to set up home after the first date! This is a male fantasy that we all share. Khole is rude and distracted on this first date and yet his ‘companion’ is doe eyed and flirty. Maggie instigates a one night stand with Khole in order to gain a peculiar revenge on her husband. Though this is meant to put Maggie in a position of strength, it is your typical stereotypical scorned woman. Does this mean that Pizzolatto also feels this way about women?

N

ic Pizzolatto’s ‘True Detective’ is a dazzling, violent police drama that boasts stellar performances from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Praise for HBO’s latest sensation has been fulsome and illuminating. There are however a small band of critics whom believe that the behaviour of Marty Hart (Harrelson) and Rusty Khole (McConaughey) is glorified and condoned by the writer. Narcissism and misogyny are rife through out the masterly 8 episodes of ‘Detective ‘. When Marty beats up his mistress’ one night stand, we are meant to be appalled as we witness Hart’s misplaced jealously explodes in a torrent of punches and abuse.

Most males could recognize Marty’s actions as their own and perhaps that is why we recoil with horror during the scene. This beating has dire consequences for Marty as Lisa ( Alexandra Daddario ) exposes their affair. Rust and Marty are sat in a bar in the aftermath of the latter’s infidelity being aired to the world. Rust asks Marty why he was unable to spot that Lisa was ‘crazy pussy ‘. This is a repellant assessment of the situation and it is a clumsy attempt to absolve Marty of blame. As it is always the women’s fault, isn’t it? There is a brutal moment in the last episode when Marty puts his gun to the head of a terrified woman in order to gain access to her phone. He is in a state of panic in his desperate need to alert the authorities about a potential arrest but this never justifies his unlawful act in his pursuit of justice. Marty is told by a brothel Madam that men only feel outrage over a woman’s plight when they are no longer under their control. He appears to be disgusted that a 16 year old girl is working at this backwoods brothel. Is that disgust borne out of genuine concern for the girl or is Marty filled with self loathing as he is aroused by her? There is a unlikely reunion between Rust and the girl in the later episodes.

he Marked Ones is yet another delve into the Paranormal Activity franchise where someone has chosen to step outside the confides of the mainly house based action, as we have seen in all the predecessors, to a roaming around various locations. For me it’s pretty much a damp squib… (everyone knows what a damp squib is right?

This may have been some kind of attempt to add something different to the PA series, but for me it misses the mark big time. Director Christopher Landon has decided to have a go at refreshing the usual Day 1, Day 2 format of the typical PA movies in favour of a more generic found-footage sort of thing. It’s a bit strange as they kinda did one of the best takes on the genre and now decde to abandon that and head in a similar direction to a lot of other movies, and thus I felt it lost a lot of its uniqueness and really seemed to be clutching at straws to try to inject some freshnes to something that didn’t really need it, fans of the franchise surely just want more of the same with a progression and development in the story, not a complete about turn. Oh, and for me anyway, Simple Simon has no place in a horror movie. On this supernatural outing high-school graduate Jesse finds a mysterious bite on his arm and on cue starts to see strange stuff happening to him, changes to his personality and his body. From then on Jesse’s fun-loving antics, which take up a large chunk of the movie’s opening scenes set in and around his lowrent apartment, start to go badly wrong. When friend Hector and Marisol join him in a séance type thing in an old building things get increasingly scarier for them all, spooky neighbours, basements, darky dark places and strangely, for a Paranormal Activity move anyway, a wee bit of your standard demon possession type goings on all try to drag things together with a sketchy connection to the previous movies thrown in make it too much of a mish-mash for my liking. Not truly a bad move but not necessarily one for fans of the franchise or even the ‘found footage’ genre.

here definitely seems to be an air of nostalgia kicking around and a whole host of our favourite long lost movie stars from the past 25 years are enjoying a lot of success again with movies like The Expendables series, more recently Last Vegas, and now Grudge Match.

This light-hearted boxing move succeeds in pulling together historically the biggest two boxers from across movie history; Rocky Balboa and Jake La Motta, well ok, Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro anyway. With a storyline reminiscent of his 2006 Rocky comeback ‘Balboa’ Stallone manages to make you feel something for his character, he plays the humble role pretty well when he needs to. I’m probably in the minority here when I say that I don’t think I’ve really enjoyed any of De Niro’s comic efforts in movies. Grudge Match however sees a different De Niro, he’s the smarmier of the two which works well for me. So basically our stars take on roles as a couple of ageing boxing rivals who are convinced to come out of retirement for one final match. Having had a long-festering feud their first meet up erupts into an unintentionally hilarious melee that is filmed and instantly goes viral when uploaded online. Soon there is a social media frenzy that changes their smallish, local grudge match, into a massive must-see HBO event. If only they can just survive the training, they might actually live to fight again? A pretty funny comedy from a couple of movie greats and a few cameos along the way, don’t take it serous and don’t look for too many big laughs and it’s a pretty enjoyable hour and half.

H

aving spanned a 50 year period in time and 24 movies James Bond has arguably been played by just a tad more than a handful (six to be precise, not counting the Sellers version of Casino Royale of course.) Our next biggest espionage action hero Jason Bourne has so far been played by one, again it’s two really but I’m discounting Richard Chamberlain in the 1988 TV version of The Bourne Identity movie, and I’m giving it to Matt Damon. Both these movie franchises have took time to develop the characters over a few movies, so why do they decide to let Jack Ryan be played, over 5 movies, by no less than 3 different people? Thus no-one really knows what kind of character he’s supposed to be… Let’s recap Jack Ryan was Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), then we had Harrison Ford (Patriot Games/Clear and Present Danger), followed by Ben Affleck and now in the upcoming Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Chris Pine. It’s kinda like the character has been rebooted three times in just five movies, so it’s hard to connect them, and thus it’s lost on me and probably the majority of people who haven’t read the books, if you do try to follow the trail it gets messy pretty quickly. In Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, there is really only the bare bones of his origins left intact. Instead of being a veteran marine retired off after a helicopter accident who goes on to have a successful career and settles down with a wife and stuff our new Ryan is a post 9/11 student of economics who enlists and after his helicopter is shot down in Afghanistan struggles to walk again. During this time he meets medical student Cathy Muller (Keira Knightly) and is approached by shadowy CIA figure Thomas Harper (Kevin Costner) to work for him, by infiltrating Wall Street to find out where terrorists are getting their funding from. Nothing like the original novel but hey that’s Hollywood. With a slightly geeky portrayal our hero end up secretly working for the CIA but is unable to tell his girlfriend. The Russians don’t like something the US do and plan an economic war that threatens a new ‘Great Depression’. It’s a light-hearted look at a Clancy book, you’ll enjoy it only if you don’t think too much about the who’s, why’s and where’s.

Director Scorsese’s revels in these types of story, the epic rise and fall. DiCaprio is back with his mentor and in top form playing his over the top role like a true master. But it is not just him all the supporting cast are sublime in their portrayals of these money hungry megalomaniacs revelling in the trappings that their lifestyle affords.

Having watched wrestling (the US version) with the kids for many years we always knew that there was the darker side to the glitz and glamor of Monday Night Raw or Smackdown. Along with the amazingly touching and sad character storyline there is a bleak look at what these guys put themselves through in aid of entertaining the public. They are addicted to it, that and a whole lot more. The matches might be ‘fake’ but the blood, sweat and tears are damn real.

he The Wolf of Wall Street kicks off where it intends to stay and manages it brilliantly. I’ll start this review in reverse probably and say right now… if you haven’t already seen this movie then get a copy NOW. It is up there with some of the best.

DiCaprio ‘IS’ Jordan Belfort, the man whose autobiographical story the film is based upon, basically a young Wall Street newbie learns the ropes from one of the top traders but before he can really get started the 1987 “Black Monday” crash occurs leaving him and all his co-workers out of a job. He stumbles on a new scheme, trading penny stocks, and before you know it he’s running his own brokerage and living in luxury most people can only dream of and with it the money, the women and the drugs a plenty. Belfort is portrayed as an outrageous stereotype of the old American dream, and plays on ethos of if you work hard and have great idea, you can be very successful, to be blunt though they don’t hae a great idea, they don’t work hard but they are successful…. Mainly because they are all a bunch of con-men ripping people off everywhere they turn. DiCaprio has all the right moves to pull off the inevitable fall from grace of Belford and his cronies, with awesome performances almost across the board, Jonah Hill as Donnie, Matthew McConaughey as the mentor as just a couple of the awesome characters at play. At three hours it’s a long movie but you probably won’t even notice… Mr Suit GoGuide Magazine Contributor

he measure of this move, or more the man of the moment Micky Rourke, is that, one watched it is hard to imagine anyone else in the title role of ‘The Wrestler’. It seem that the mirrors his life to a certain extent. His portrayal of washed-up, has been ring master Randy “The Ram” Robinson, Rourke truly makes it his own. His readymade battle scarred frame fits the bill perfectly and so does his acting skills.

The guys in this movie longer grace the 100,000 seater arenas and rake in million each year, they do what they do just to get by and to do something they love whether it be in a school gym hall, a church hall or an old industrial unit, it’s all the same to them. With a hearing aid and reading glasses Randy out of the ring doesn’t make for comfortable viewing as he drags around his aging and steroid-effected body from one brightly lit battleground to the next. He’s trying to make end meat with a shitty job and a shitty life his only escape is the square circle he truly calls home. It’s really Randy’s story but somehow you always kinda feel like it’s Rourke’s story too. The behind the scenes of a match are laid bare. The rituals, the match-prep, the sneaky bits of taped up razor blades and the planned moves are all there, along with the darker elements like the broken glass, barbed wire and a staple gun, yep a staple gun. Randy eventually suffers a heart attack, and his long, slow story seems to be coming to a swift conclusion. His friend Cassidy (Marisa Tomei) also works in an industry where youth is kinda the order of the day. As a pole dancer, she looks at Randy and realises that they are both past their best for their chosen professions. Eventually a reunion with his estranged daughter places even more strain on already broken man.

E

ver since the Watch Dogs trailers started to arrive back in 2012 this game has picked up a lot of hype over the past 2 years, and it’s always going to be difficult with all the expectations this game had to live up to, for it to actually achieve its vision.

You take the role of Aiden Pearce, a formidable hacker that takes advantage of ‘ctOS’ weaknesses in his surroundings to gain information and make a profit, However during a big heist attempt that crosses some nasty people, Aiden’s niece is accidently killed in the crossfire after a hit is put out on him. This in turn drags Aiden deeper into the criminal world seeking out all those responsible. It’s a nice touch not having the take down the corrupt, spying system but rather to try to use it to your own advantage. Aiden’s personal vendetta brings a better element to the story, more than merely rebelling against the conspiracy, and his refusal to let go of the past, it creates an uneasy tension with his sister and her family.

Although, his troubled past and tormented character never really delivers. Instead his character is pretty flat when compared to the other people in the game like T-Bone. With hacking being the centre of the gameplay it’s used in pretty much every part the game. Using your trusty hacking phone you can get a rough profile on anybody in the streets, hack their bank accounts, listen in to phone calls, read text messages that could lead to possible loot or detect a crime. But this phone has a lot more apps to do lots more stuff. Your phone is also your most lethal weapon, it can be used to hack and create booby traps like road blocks to lose pursuing cars, set off electrical boxes to fry your enemies and burst steam pipes on the road to cause just a little bit of havoc. The ability to hack and jump between security cameras allows you to get a visual on locations from multiple angles, or even to scour through a building using only camera’s, to open a door or to watch out for guards patrolling the area. This all adds up and allows for a more tactical approach rather than winging it all the time. You can also make use of cover, knock out guards and use a variety of gadgets to sneak your way in. Gadgets such as ‘Lures’ attract enemies towards them, ‘Jammers’ block lines of

JULY 2014 - issue (40)

communication and prevent police scanners from finding you and ‘Blackouts’ disable every electronic in the area, allowing you to sneak out under the cover of darkness. That’s not to say that you can’t go in guns blazing all the time if want to. Sometimes the game calls for the more action approach but that’s where the problems start to kick in. The shooting aspect is not the best at times so planned approaches could counter some flaws by laying out some traps in wait for the enemy before you start blasting away. In the streets you’ll end up being engaged in a few car chases, hacking traffic lights, security pols, road spikes and bridges to gain the advantage. Although being chased by the police fits in the context of the hacking to get away, when it comes to doing the chasing, there’s one element that’s missing and that’s the ability to shoot out car windows. It is satisfying when causing a pile up to stop the chase but there are areas where electronic devices are not as available, as in the city, so chases could potentially get dragged out far longer than one would like. It’s just so weird not having the ability shoot out your car window when enemies can do it, wtf?

The driving mechanics aren’t the best either but they can be tolerated. You can take any car you wish, even when you unlock the ability to access any car without the risk of the alarm going off, there are no bad circumstances from stealing cars. There’s also a wide variety of skill and perks that you can unlock. Skill points unlock new hacking tools, certain buffs in driving or shooting and even a bullet time feature. Driving throughout Chicago you’ll get regular reports of missions and activities that you can do. Hacking ctOS towers scattered throughout Chicago unlocks smaller objectives and also acts as a fast travel point for a certain region. Some of these abilities are more appealing to Aiden, as a vigilante hacker where hacking phones can lead you to prevent a crime, or following an investigation related to a serial killer. While other activities can have you act as a decoy and get the police to follow you, or take down higher ranked criminals being transported in a convoy. Other mini-games that are featured are the digital trips. The most mentionable one would be the ‘Spider Bot’ game, where you take control of a giant robot spider and perform certain tasks in each round while holding off against the police. Also the rather interesting ‘Alone’ game where all occupants of Chicago have disappeared and the streets are roamed by deadly robots that hunt you down while you’re trying to clear the area. The only online feature I tried was when you infiltrated another player’s game and proceeded to hack them. It’s a moment that could happen to you at any time between missions (unless you have turned it off). Upon entering another players game you up to 5 minutes to begin your hacking and once you do that’s when the other player has been made aware of your presence. So they have to find you before you have finished hacking their accounts but to keep it fair there is a small area that you have to stay in while the hacking has begun, plus the area gets smaller as the hacking progresses building up the tension for how close the player can locate you. Even with the downgrade in graphics it’s still an impressive looking game. Watch Dogs version of Chicago is beautiful and a well-crafted world that not only feels alive, but realistic too. You can frequently listen to people having conversations as you walk down the streets, witness car accidents, guys rapping and even the outcomes of awkward first dates. If crimes do happen civilians will pull out the phones and call 911. Watch Dogs may not be refined enough compared to its Assassin’s Creed brother but I can see it getting better as they continue the franchise. With a few flaws here and there it did let me down in a few areas but surprised me with the attention to detail and how fun the hacking can be. I also couldn’t get into the story at all, where it began to feel like a burden to continue on. But even without the story mode there are tons of side activities that you can take part in that leaves you with hours and hours of gameplay.

MURDERED: OUL SUSPECT S

howing off some pretty neat ideas Murdered: Soul Suspect starts off rather promising but it never really delivers. You play as detective Ronan O’Connor, an ex-criminal turned cop, who is murdered while out tailing a suspect. You’re now trying to track down the killer while as a ghost in order to ‘move on’.

First of all I never really got into the story; I never really felt that I personally was actually solving the crime. Also, being a ghost isn’t really as much as you’d think in Murdered. Even with your supernatural abilities which aren’t ‘super’ at all, they are even used in a rather mundane manner. The problem I think is that most of the time the investigation feels like it’s solving itself, and as a result, it’s hard getting drawn into the unfolding mystery. To make things worse, most of your ethereal abilities are used in the most mundane ways possible. What could have been a unique spin on the classic thriller is instead little more than a missed opportunity. Showing a rather interest backstory, Ronan is sadly boring as a lead character, and as a ghost he still craves a cigarette in pretty every cut scene. Ronan’s character never really feels convincing with his emotions plus the audio voice over doesn’t deliver much punch. It’s difficulty to get involved in the story when the lead character can’t deliver a promising performance. Proceeding through the game, you’ll go through multiple crimes scenes, picking up on clues to gain information to proceed forward. It’s no Batman detective mode, and it pretty much

gets duller and duller as you proceed through the game. After collecting all the evidence you’re given an almost ultimatum on what route to proceed down with the crime scene, you choose the correct answer using the evidence that you gained. It’s an interesting method but there isn’t any challenge in it at all. There are no bad outcomes from choosing the wrong answer, you just simply try again, so there’s also no real effort needed. Along with many of the other perks of being a ghost you also get the ability to possess almost anyone at will, allowing you to hear what their thinking and sometimes even influence what they can say. But everyone seems pretty boring and have nothing worthy of a mention that hold any perspective on the situation. Probably the most mentionable part and rather nice addition to the game is you can possess a cat a few points in the game. Giving a different pace to work with and more mobility you can climb through vents, across trees and up vines. Sadly these cat shenanigans are rather short and will actually leave you wanting more cat stuff. Annoyingly there are several soul crushing stealth moments in the game where demons petrol areas. If they spot you they’ll try and take your soul. To defeat the demons you have sneak up behind them, and with no indication or some sort demonstration on how to even defeat them, Ronan somehow knows how to take down a demon. The Demons are also pretty easy to hide from if they actually spot you. Overall There are a few moments where Murdered: Soul Suspect could actually make good on its supernatural potential, and it’s truly not a bad idea for game but it was perhaps developed in the wrong direction, for me it’s trying to be a thrilling, murder mystery game, but never quite achieves that status. urprisingly this was probably one of the most impressive FPS I’ve played in a while. I wasn’t planning on picking up the game but after hearing some good feedback I thought I need a break from Battlefield so why not. So with a rather lengthy introductory mission to the game utilizing air battles and infiltrating a castle against the advanced German military with futuristic technology, Wolfenstein: The New Order takes place 14 years after the aforementioned event, where Nazi’s now rule the world and it’s up to William “B.J.” Blazkowicz to stop them.

I’ve never played any previous Wolfenstein games before but the pace and overall mechanics makes it stand out above the rest in FPS. Tearing through enemies with loud well designed weapons works for certain playthroughs but you can also take a stealthier approach if you decide to be calculated and calmer. Blazkowicz is able to carry many, many, many weapons open his person. If he wasn’t too succumbed to bullets then this man would be a walking battle tank. So you’ll need to keep scanning for medical kits, food to replenish your health and armour to provide that little bit of protection. The AI is pretty good as well when it comes to the action, the Nazi’s will try to flank when possible and act aggressively to flush you out. You are always concerned about running out of ammo or thinking what weapon is better to use as every new weapon you pick up stays in your arsenal. It’s appreciated at times but can be an immersion breaker.

1981

The leaning mechanic is hands down one of the better utilized features in any FPS games that have the same mechanic. It gives you a great advantage in a defensive set up. Another neat idea is you’re rewarded with various perks depending on your playthrough, so the stealthier approach with knives and silenced weapons will give you a more ninja like perks as opposed to the more brutal, explosive playthrough will give you a more violent approach. Using stealth does have its advantageous as German officers have the ability to call for reinforcements so carefully making your way to them is advisable.

2014

The world is very well designed even to the extent where you could easily imagine that these areas could be real. The area is also nicely spread out so there’s a lot of environment to explore. The plot isn’t the best of plots but the development of the characters and their relationships are very well thought out and written. There is a very awkward decision early on where you have to choose who dies between two soldiers in your company. But a grizzled war veteran would surely say F*** You! Instead of going ok I choose him to die. This does however affect the story later on in the game depending on who you choose. Wolfenstein: The New Order is probably a contender for a sleeper hit of the year, there are minor inconsistences in the game but nothing that could be improved on. Wolfenstein achieves a lot with impressive gameplay, character development and a mix of tactical and grinding action and the game manages to stay on a high note throughout the majority of the game.

CLASSIC MOVIE POSTERS 101

E

.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction film coproduced and directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison, featuring special effects by Carlo Rambaldi and Dennis Muren, and starring Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, and Peter Coyote. It tells the story of Elliott (played by Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed “E.T.”, who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help it return home while attempting to keep it hidden from their mother and the government. The concept for the film was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents’ divorce in 1960. In 1980, Spielberg met Mathison and developed a new story from the stalled science fiction/horror film project Night Skies. It was shot from September to December 1981 in California on a budget of US$10.5 million. Unlike most motion pictures, it was shot in roughly chronological order, to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast. Released by Universal Pictures, the film was a blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time until Jurassic Park, another Spielberg-directed film, surpassed it in 1993. Critics acclaimed it as a timeless story of friendship, and it ranks as the greatest science fiction film ever made in a Rotten Tomatoes survey.
