ver wondered what Texas guitarist Ally McErlaine was up to these days? Or the lovely Shelly Poole, from million-selling duo Alisha’s Attic? Well apart from getting hitched to each other back in 2001 they have been working hard musically together alongside former model and member of The Alice Band & The Ailerons, Charity Hair.
The trio, who formed around 2009 under the moniker of ‘Red Sky July’, released their debut single ‘Morning Song’ in September 2011 followed by a self-titled album a month later, receiving rave press reviews from the likes of Q Magazine. Now in 2014 their second album ‘Shadowbirds’, which was released on September 15th, gives the band another opportunity to share a little Page 4
bit more of their heart felt alt-country music, awash with beautiful harmonies over a bed of painstakingly crafted and melodic songs. It’s a welcoming and easy listen that will have you almost drift away, carrying you across the entire album without you really realising it, loosing yourself as each track blends seamlessly into the next, perfect for a summers drive along an ocean road, stopping for a long, leisurely look at the sea along the way… although we are central belt Scotland so that probably means parked in a lay-by up the Bathgate hills checking out the smog? But hey these tunes will definitely put a smile on your face and more often than not a tug at your tight little heart strings, in just the right way though, so either way you’re gonna have a warm fuzzy feeling in the pit of your stomach by the final track ‘Solitary Woman’ dreamily fades into the distance. The Shelly/Charity crisscrossing harmonies work impeccably together, two beautiful voices blending beautifully together but still manage to sparkle on their own. Overall a definite Nashville flavour abounds although there is a good splattering of Celtic charm OCT 2014 - issue (43)
thrown in for good measure. When you look at it, it’s actually a pretty amazing collection of songs, from a pretty amazing collection of people. When you think about Ally and his recent life threatening illness that almost saw us loose his genius forever, it really does hit home just how amazing it actually is. Thankfully though, with his own, and his amazing wife Shelly’s strength and commitment, they battled through the massive odds stacked against them to come back to a place where no doctor thought they would ever be. That strength, commitment and the couples intimate connection truly shines throughout the album and their amazing story is chronicled in Shelly’s book ‘The Miracle’ published by Words HQ. Historically there’s no need to mention Ally’s ‘Texas’ connection, or the 35 million records they sold during their years together (not sure what the deal is with the band at the moment but guessing a ‘hiatus’ would best describe it?). with sister, Karen in Pop duo Alisha’s Attic from 1996–2001 and were actually nominated for a Brit Award as Best Newcomers back in 1997. The final member of the trio is the amazingly talented Charity Hair, completing a properly beautiful front line for the band, and like her singing soul mate Shelly she has plenty of pedigree in the music business having played in a pop trio back in 2000 called The Alice Band, releasing an album and a few singles to not bad success. She also lends her vocal talents to indie rock band The Ailerons, featuring resident Blur drummer Dave Rowntree and Mike Smith (Blur/Gorillaz/Jamiroquai). On the road RSJ have headlined national tours as well as supported the likes of Deacon Blue, James Walsh, of Starsailor fame, and even appeared as special guests on Jools Hollands UK summer tour and sold out performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Recent appearances have seen them tour as both support and backing band for popular Nashville singer/songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman. Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy awarded the guys with the prestigious Tartan Clef award at the Scottish Music Awards where they were also performing. Gigs in the pipeline include special guest slots on tours with Sheryl Crow and Steve Earle their very own UK headline tour starting in Nottingham on October 6th and taking in Leicester, London, Southport, Cardiff, Basingstoke, Kinross, Glasgow, Twyford, Milton Keynes and our very own Torphichen Inn in November. “We can’t wait to get out of the studio, get away from the computers and actually meet some of the friends, fans and followers we cyber know through Twitter and Facebook. an unwitting pawn of the American right and its ultra conservative President Ronald Reagan. This misinterpretation of the title track is a story that has been told many times and it is not a path this we shall travel at this juncture. Bruce and The E Street boys recorded over 100 songs during the ‘USA’ sessions and it is incredulous that Springsteen omitted so many outstanding songs from the final record as he felt that they didn’t fit in with the structure of the album. Rolling Stone recently voted ‘Shut Out The Light’ as the best song that never made it onto the album ( though Springsteen did include it on the ‘B’ side of one of the 7 singles from ‘USA’ ) and this writer fully concurs with that assessment. Bruce may have chosen to find a place for the likes of ‘Janey Don’t You Lose Heart’, ‘Pink Cadillac’, ‘Brothers Under The Bridges’ and ‘Lions Den’ to name but a few but as always, his sense of artistic perfection wouldn’t allow him to compromise his vision for the record. ‘I’m On Fire’ is my favourite Bruce track of all time and it stands as one of the best pop songs of the 1980’s. From Max Weinberg’s air tight drumming, Danny Federici’s eclectic synth, to Bruce sounding spookily like Elvis; it is simply glorious.

he summer of 1984 belonged to Bruce Springsteen. His earth shattering album ‘Born In The USA‘ was the first ever CD available to buy in America and with the help of this new technology, an intensive marketing campaign by Columbia Records and the brilliance of the record itself, Springsteen managed to sell over twenty five million copies worldwide. ‘USA’ celebrated its 30th anniversary this summer but unlike other albums in his back catalogue (‘Born To Run’ and ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’), it was not re-launched in an commemorative box set to herald it’s 3rd decade. Bruce once said that he felt ambivalence towards the uber success and wealth that the album brought him. The sheer commercialism of the album has left Springsteen conflicted in the years since it was released. Many Springsteen fans that had been with Bruce since the early 70’s fostered a strong sense of ‘betrayal’ over the globalisation of ‘The Boss’.
Bruce wrote the beautiful ‘Bobby Jean’ as a gift for Steven Van Zandt. Steven was leaving the band to pursue his own solo career and the song is a gorgeous ode to a friendship that began back in Jersey when the two fledging musicians were in their teens. ‘Glory Days’ conjures up images of hot dogs, warm summer days and the pursuit of young love. ‘Working On The Highway’ is almost a clone of Eddie Cochran’s 1958 hit ‘Summer Time Blues’ in terms of arrangement. ‘Highway’ was originally titled ‘Child Bride’ given credence to the music writers at the time that labelled Bruce’s music as being rather chauvinistic. Though the song (and many others from the early 80’s) was undoubtedly sexist, there is nothing insidious behind Springsteen’s writing. He had steeped himself in the literature of the American Midwest of the 1940’s and 50’s and some of the colloquialisms of that era were bound to crop up in his work. ‘Downbound Train’ is an underrated masterpiece of loneliness and obsession. ‘My Hometown’ is the most evolved song on the album in terms of song writing and it truly belongs on ‘USA’s’ predecessor, ‘Nebraska ’. ‘Dancing In The Dark’ remains Springsteen’s biggest ever selling single. It alienated many older Springsteen fans when it was released due to its pop infused lyrics and beat and the frankly absurd video which promoted it! Bruce dances on stage with a pre-pubescent Courtney Cox under the gaze of Brian de Palma’s lens. The fact that nobody thought that it was slightly strange to see a 35 year old male grinding hips with a girl who must have either been still in high school or just about to graduate is an indictment of that time! The song became a staple of the live shows during ‘The Rising’ Tour. So, here we are, 30 years down the road and though Bruce has never come close to replicating the colossal success of ‘USA’ (in terms of album sales!), his music is more relevant than ever.
The album opens with Bruce’s most iconic song. Bruce had recorded a more sombre version of ‘Born In The USA’ for his 1982 folk album, ‘Nebraska’. He chose not to use it on that particular record and he unleashed his beloved E Street Band on the track. That sparse, low key cut from ‘Nebraska’ was transformed into a rip roaring, radio friendly rock anthem. The misinterpretation of the song would make Bruce OCT 2014 - issue (43)

PUMPKIN CARVING... + 5 of our TOP TEMPLATES
Pumpkin carving has become an integral part of Halloween celebrations throughout the world and techniques and tools have become readily available for those planning just a simple scary face to those looking to attempting something a little more adventurous. Carving sets can be easily found online for a few pounds and there are thousands of templates to download to help you get that perfect looking pumpkin. To get carving you need: A Pumpkin, a printer, some paper, a big strong spoon, a carving toolkit OR a small nail and some various sized serrated knifes. How to carve: There are four basic methods of carving, traditionally the most common method is removing parts of the pumpkin to create areas where light shines through thus creating lit areas for eyes, nose, mouth etc. and forming your character. The second option is to remove the areas around your character/shape and creating a backlit scene. The third and most artistic is done by removing the outer skin and various layer of flesh underneath to create subtle bright and glowing scenes. The most extreme version of pumpkin carving is to physically carve your shape/ figure in 3D on part of the whole pumpkin, this method tends to be the realm of proper artists. We’ll concentrate on just the first couple of methods. Firstly cut a large hole in the top of the pumpkin, making sure you cut at a 45 degree angle inwards so the piece removed sits nicely on top, this will be your entry point and the removed piece will be your lid.

that the walls of your pumpkin are about 1 inch. You can push a thin nail or pin through to check the thickness in areas you are concerned about. Print out your desired template. Stick your pattern to the pumpkin with pins or tape. If you have a rough pumpkin, make things easier by lightly dampening the paper, but make sure it’s not enough to make the print run. Make small cuts and tape down any areas where it starts to crumple so you can get things nice and flat. If you used water leave the pumpkin aside to dry before you start. Follow the lines of your template and push your small nail or pumpkin poker into the pumpkin until it bursts the skin, spaced roughly a couple of mm apart or less for complicated templates. It takes a while but it’s worth it and way better than using a marker which either washes off as you are cutting or leaves behind ugly residue. When done remove the paper. If you can’t see your holes enough try rubbing some flour over the. Decide which section you want to start with and poke your nail all the way through. Do this on each section to be removed and all before you start carving as the pumpkin will become weaker as you remove parts so pushing the nail through becomes a lot more difficult. Grab your saw/knife of choice and start cutting. Again, due to trying to limit pressure, start in the centre of your template. Always use a sawing motion, let the saw/knife do the work, use very light pressure and take your time..!!!! Push cut pieces from the inside to remove them and cut larger sections into multiple smaller pieces. Once you have finished all the carving try to use a modern LED light to show off your handy work, LED’s are much safer than a normal candle. If you do have to use a candle make sure you use one that fits half the pumpkin and form a base from tinfoil before placing inside the pumpkin. Stick on your lid and let it sit for a few minutes, take it off and you should have a black smoke mark, make a hole where the mark is to allow the smoke to escape. All done.

Prep time: 25 mins - Cook time: 40 mins Serves: 6
Thai Pumpkin Soup Ingredients: 1½ kg peeled and roughly chopped pumpkin 4 tsp sunflower oil 1 onion, sliced 1 tbsp grated ginger 1 lemongrass, bashed a little 3-4 tbsp Thai red curry paste 400ml can coconut milk 850ml vegetable stock lime juice and sugar, for seasoning 1 red chilli, sliced
Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... Fire on the oven to 180C (200 if you don’t have a fan). Throw your pumpkin or squash in a roasting tin along with approx. half the oil and some seasoning, toss them around so thay are nicely coated, roast them for about 30 mins, making sure they are golden and tender. Grab a pan and put in the remaining oil and the onion, ginger and lemongrass. Cook for 8-10 minutes on a gentle simmer until everything softens. Stir in the Thai curry paste and simmer again for another minute. Pour in your roasted pumpkin, the coconut milk – keeping 3 tbsp for later - and the vegetable stock. Cook for a further 5 mins and then remove the lemongrass. Place aside to cool for a few mins and then blast it with a hand blender until smooth. Pour the soup back into the pan and heat through, adding your seasoning and the lime juice and sugar as desired. Pour into bowls and garnish with the remaining coconut milk and the chilli.

Pumpkin & Chickpeas Curry Ingredients:
Now lets get down to the nitty gritty...
1 tbsp sunflower oil 3 tbsp Thai yellow curry paste 2 onions, finely chopped 3 large stalks lemongrass, bashed with the back of a knife 6 cardamom pods 1 tbsp mustard seed 1 x 1kg piece pumpkin 250ml vegetable stock 400ml can coconut milk 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 limes Large handful mint leaves Naan bread, to serve
In a large sauté pan heat your oil, then add the curry paste, onions, lemongrass, cardamom and mustard seed and fry for 2-3 mins. Add the pumpkin and make sure you coat it well with the mixture. Pour in the stock and coconut milk and bring the pan to a simmer. Add the chickpeas and cook for a further 10 mins approx. or until the pumpkin is tender. Cut one lime into wedges to serve with the curry, take the other and cut in half, squeeze the juice into the pan and mix well. Serving in a deep plate garnished with torn/chopped mint leaves along with the lime wedges and warmed Naan bread.

Pecan & Maple Cream with Pumpkin Pie Ingredients:

550g piece pumpkin, peeled and cut into chunks 500g pack shortcrust pastry 175g light muscovado sugar 2 eggs 142ml pot double cream 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp allspice 1 tsp ground ginger Small grating of nutmeg for the pecan and maple cream 142ml tub double cream 5 tbsp maple syrup 25g pecans, finely chopped
Lightly flour your surface and roll out the pastry to around 4-5mm thickness and is wide enough to line a 25cm round baking tin. Gently place the pastry into the tin, ensuring you keep a slight overhang. Chill the base for about half an hour then fire up the oven and preheat to 200C. Line the case with foil and fill with baking beans before baking for around 15-20 mins. Take the tin out of the oven and carefully remove the beans and foil and put back in oven for 10 mins. Turn your oven down to 160C. While waiting for it to cool stick your pumpkin, sugar, eggs, cream and spices in a blender and zap until smooth. Fill the tray with the mixture and bake for 1 hr ensuring the filling has puffed up in the centre, don’t worry it will sink tonnes as it cools. Remove tin from the oven and leave to cool.
Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... For once we’re gonna use your good old microwave, they are not always bad, put the pumpkin pieces in a big microwaveable bowl

Not everyone reads health related articles like those of us in the health industry, and even in these areas, there are many still ignorant to the affects stress has on getting the results you want in the gym. So what is stress? The Stress Management Society defines stress as being caused by caused by two things. It is down to whether you think situations around you are worthy of anxiety.

And then it’s down to how your body reacts to your thought processes. This instinctive stress response to unexpected events is known as ‘fight or flight’. Stress happens when we feel that we can’t cope with pressure, are over whelmed by negative events, either at work, home or relationships and these trigger physiological responses. These changes are best described as the fight or flight response, a hard-wired reaction to perceived threats to our survival. When survival meant facing immediate and real threats, such as confronting a charging elephant, our response has saved lives. At times of danger, the body’s primitive brain
automatically takes charge by triggering a set of changes that bypass our rational thoughts. Priority is given to all physical functions, which provide more power to face an enemy, or to flee. To understand why stress can have negative impacts on your health, you must first understand the physiological changes that occur within your body during the fight or flight response. The fight or flight response is when we experience a shock, or perceives a threat, and our body quickly releases hormones that help it to survive. In humans, as in other animals, these hormones help us to run faster and fight harder. They increase heart rate and blood pressure - delivering more oxygen and blood sugar to power important muscles. They increase sweating in an effort to cool these muscles, and help them stay efficient. They divert blood away from the skin to the core of our bodies - reducing blood loss if we are damaged. As well as this, these hormones focus our attention on the threat, to the exclusion of everything else. Breathing is accelerated to supply more oxygen for conversion to energy. The heart moves into overdrive to supply the body with more oxygen and nutrients. Our immune system is activated, ready to administer to wounds. Attention and sight become acute and highly focused and our sense of pain is diminished as the body releases analgesic hormones.

Whichever one we choose, our body will expend an immense amount of energy that in itself prevents the build up of stress related to this response. Modern civilisation however, provides a shield against predators. The inherent fight or flight response still resides in us but now it is triggered by different, seemingly less life threatening events. Many day-to-day situations can set it off - a change of home, a difficult boss, divorce, separation, demanding children, traffic jams, the fear of terrorism etc. etc. etc. Today many of us don’t take enough physical exercise to ‘burn off’ the effects of our response and we’re left with stress build up. We learn to control our reactions, but this does not counteract the stress response. Life-threatening events are not the only ones to trigger this reaction. We experience it almost any time we come across something unexpected or something that frustrates our goals.
How stress affects the body? The effects on the body through sudden and chronic (long term) stress are numerous, but what many don’t realise is that stress DOES make you fat! Why? Think of times when you’ve been stressed due to exams, illness, problems at work etc. Most people respond by eating carbohydrate rich foods (especially quick release carbs, think cakes, biscuits and junk food). When the stress is low to medium this is a common response. This is due to the brains requirements for carbohydrates. The brain uses only carbohydrates for fuel! High glycemic carbohydrates (sugary foods) cause spikes in brain chemistry namely dopamine and serotonin as well as opioids and cannabinoids Stress raises free radicals, insulin, and blood pressure which all damage neurons. Our body has a checks and balances system to make sure we do not go too far in one direction. When we are stressed and our catecholamines (hormones produced in the adrenal glands) rise, we will release serotonin and GABA to counteract it. If we are constantly under stress and releasing serotonin and GABA we will desensitise them and they will become depleted. This leaves the catecholamines to run rampant. Excess amounts of catecholamines in our system lead to depression, anxiety, and

FITNESST.O.D. insomnia. Poor sleep, illness, and excessive heat will also deplete serotonin, as does cortisol. Cortisol actually damages serotonin receptor sites. Cortisol is the so called ‘stress hormone’
Is Cortisol Bad For You? Cortisol is not bad for you, it is a hormone that is essential for life as part of our natural stress response. There are many hormones in our bodies, which in the proper amounts, maintain good health, but in excess or in deficiency, contribute to health problems. Cortisol is no different. Chronically elevated cortisol levels may have a variety of negative effects. Cortisol is catabolic and elevated cortisol levels can cause the loss of muscle tissue by assisting the process of converting lean tissue into glucose. An excess of cortisol can also lead to a decrease in insulin sensitivity, increased insulin resistance, reduced kidney function, hypertension, suppressed immune function, reduced growth hormone levels, and reduced connective tissue strength. Chronically elevated levels of cortisol can also decrease strength and performance in athletes. We need all these neurotransmitters in balance to function properly. This is a requirement of our Hypothalamus-PituitaryAdrenal Axis (HPA-axis). And guess what? Our HPA-axis controls our metabolism! Therefore, if the neurotransmitters are not in balance our metabolism gets thrown out of whack. One of the negative side effects of this is an up regulation in fat storage. Sustained imbalances in neurotransmitters leads to increased risk for obesity. Conclusions
Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis
Excessive cortisol is not good. But cortisol is not inherently bad; it’s a vitally important hormone and part of your body’s natural stress response. In excess it can cause physiological changes that can affect the metabolism, and lead to the body storing fat. The best ways to counter act all of the above? Get yourself on a solid exercise and nutrition program, and seek natural ways to enhance recovery and reduce stress. By doing this first, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that you’re losing fat and gaining muscle. But first try and reduce stress, get a good nights sleep and eat a healthy balanced diet. n the announcement of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, I got as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. Every preview, every trailer, every thing that was related to the new film was watched several times over by myself and anyone else who was unfortunate enough to be engulfed by my enthusiasm. The first film was so good and the graphic novels are brilliant. On top of that, most of the original cast were returning to reprise their roles from the first film, except of course for the late Brittany Murphy and Michael Clarke Duncan. Devon Aoki was also not present as Miho as she was pregnant at the time of filming. Instead, her role was taken on by Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch, The Hangover Trilogy) as she stepped up to the plate. To be fair to her, her performance as Miho was satisfactory, but she doesn’t have anything on Aoki – especially because Miho’s character was amped up for the sequel, and I feel that Aoki would have given the role a more natural and effortless appearance. That being said, all-in-all Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was an alright film, but it doesn’t hold a flame to the first. In fact, in the context of the first film it was a bit of a disappointment, especially towards the end – and that’s coming from a die-hard fan of the graphic novels. Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of ass-kickery throughout the film, and it was really dialled up. Everything from the language to the attire to the violence was really given the green-light in terms of risqué-ness. If you’re a big fan of Marv, like my partner is, the opening ten minutes of the film will have you giddy with bloodlust as his character gets his kill on with a gang. All of the main characters that you know and love from the first film are present her; Marv, Gail, Dwight McCarthy (although he’s now played by Josh Brolin – if you’ve read the graphic novels or paid attention in the first film you’ll understand why a completely new actor had to be used for this role) and of course the infamous and notorious Nancy Callahan who undergoes a serious character transformation towards the end of the film. There is also the usual and expected scenes that explain character motivations from the previous film, such as Manute, but we also get treated to some new characters who interact with our older ones. Due to the narrative structure of the graphic novels not being linear, that gives the films the freedom to do the same (which of course, they did). That’s why we are treated to shortlived but enjoyable none-the-less scenes such as seeming Goldie alive with her twin sister. Perhaps the most memorable interactions happen between Gail, Dwight and new character – the Goddess, Ava who is played by Eva Green, who seems to be getting her kit off in every major film she’s been in recently. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For seemed a little short in run time compared to the first film. It is shorter, but only by 22 minutes. I can’t quite place my finger on what it is exactly that made this film feel like a 90 minute flick, but it did. The first film felt long in a good way, but the sequel just seems…lacking. This was probably due to the rush-job that happened with the characters. Personally, I would have love to of seen more on the Goddess, Johnny

and Manute. They were all such interesting characters and they didn’t seem to get given the screen time they deserved. Johnny’s time was drastically cut short, and it was all kind of anti-climactic. Nancy as a character underwent a very dramatic transformation during the film, and although it was true to the graphic novel, it seemed really rushed and more of an afterthought than anything else and it ruined it. The extra 20 minutes of screen time that made this film shorter than its prequel could have really aided Nancy’s character development and made it more realistic rather than making it feel rushed. I also guarantee that no one would have complained at seeing an extra 20 minutes or so of Jessica Alba in the character of Nancy Callahan. It almost felt like the filmmakers thought that their audience see Nancy as little more than a piece of ass to sell the film, and whilst I admit that that might be the case for some people, that shouldn’t mean that that’s how they treat her character. Nancy is a key character whose actions are central to the plot of both films. More time was given to her flesh and dancing than to her unravelling character and revenge. And I know that this is a movie based off of a Frank Miller graphic novel and that it’s supposed to be incredibly sexy, but there’s a difference between keeping in-style with something, and caving in to the basic common denominator at the sacrifice of plot. Overall, this was a disappointing sequel, but still a great film. I feel that the current IMDB ratings of the two films (correct at the time of publication) of 8.2 for the first and 7.0 for the second is pretty accurate. If you’ve never seen the first film you’ll be blown away, if you have seen the first film/read the graphic novels you’ll be disappointed, but you’ll still enjoy it. tallone and Statham et al. are at it again in the third outing for the Expendables team, fighting, shooting and blowing more things up with their old and new friends. Amidst all the explosions there is the requisite plotline involving Barney Ross (Stallone) and his Expendables co-founder Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson). Stonebanks has long since become a successful arms-dealer and all round bad guy and Ross is quick to learn he is still alive (he thought he had killed him back in the day) while also welcoming a pay check to kill him again.

Prior to the Ross and Stonebanks showdown is the Expendables spectacular rescue of old member Doctor Death (Wesley Snipes). The ‘Doc’, a knives man and medic, is soon back on the team after the military prison where he is being held proves no match for the Expendables. Snipes has some fun on his return to the big screen after his well publicised personal issues and along with the excitable Galgo (Antonio Banderas) gives the film that superstar finesse which has been missing from the franchise to date. Never an Expendables strong point you will not be surprised to learn the dialogue feels a bit stilted at times and none of the quips will have you rolling around with laughter. However, it is all generally harmless enough and you will probably raise a little smile rather than feel any sort of embarrassment at the one-liners. The most fun comes for the more mature audience member in spotting the call-backs to those 80’s action movies the now ageing stars cram in to remind

us just how big they were; my personal favourite “I am the Hague!” There is nothing particularly new for this third time around but to paraphrase a phrase – if it ain’t blown up, don’t fix it. There is even an attempt at a little cerebral reflection (do intentions define actions / the new replacing the old) but such sentimentality has little place here and is soon drowned out by the next gun battle and explosion. So should you see it? Of course you should. You know the actors and you know the Expendables so you know exactly what you will get. The film does not try to be anything other than what you would expect it to be and is all the better for it. Finally, if you are still wondering if Gibson succeeds and makes this the last outing for Stallone and his Expendables crew then fear not, before this film was even released there was talk of Expendables 4 and 5. here is definitely one thing that Kevin Costner isn’t and that’s an action hero, 3 Days to Kill, was met with little applause by anyone who actually watched it and that’s understandable once you see it.
But put him in a sports related jacket and you might just be on to something, I don’t think that the guys has put a foot wrong, and although Draft Day in the end kind of tags along behind the massively successful Moneyball, it still is a pretty good movie. From American Flyers (Cycle Racing) to Bull Durham (Baseball), the awesome Field of Dreams (Baseball) and Tin Cup (Golf) and of course soon to come McFarland USA (Track), Costner seems to be a natural for the sports genre. So, with our main man back in familiar and comfortable territory, in director Ivan Reitman's American Football management film you will be pretty much get what you would expect. Like Moneyball this is not your typical sports movie, all the action is kept strictly off the field and concentrate on the political and sometime cutthroat goings on inside the locker rooms, on the tactics board and written on the boardroom check books. Reitman and writing team Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman use their gifts to weave a story that pretty much gives a convincingly peek into a world few people have seen Cleveland Browns manager Sonny Weaver (Costner) has one day to change his clubs future, that day is Draft Day, a day where Sonny learns he’s going to be a father to his lover/co-worker (Jennifer Garner), where his mother decides she wants to spread his dead fathers ashes on the football ground he loved so much (his dad previously being the manager of the same team), a day where no one seems to understand just what is going on inside his genius footballing brain. Split screens are used to pull the tension in even closer and it’s damn effective (remember how good it was in 24), I’m guessing they thought they need something since there isn’t any real football played throughout the movie. The cast includes the likes of Dennis Leary, Chadwick Boseman, draftee Josh Pence, the unhappy quarterback Tom Welling, and Ellen Burstyn as Sonny’s mother, and they are all pretty good in their respective roles to varying degrees but the light generally shines squarely on Costner’s shoulders. He justifies his billing and reminds us why he was once one of the most popular movie stars in the world, he has a warmth and sincerity about him that few others can really capture. Overall Draft Day is definitely worth a watch, not quite up there with Moneyball, but doing a good job none the less.

o another Wednesday night rolls around and a group of my friends say “Hey, it’s Orange Wednesday, let’s go to the cinema”. I’m all for it until they say Guardians of the Galaxy. I really didn’t want to see it. I’m not ashamed to admit it, I was being a snob. I was of the opinion that it’s a yet another film adaptation of a Marvel comic, and a lesser-known Marvel comic at that. I thought that Marvel was just slinging their name on anything these days and making a film out of any old comic they used to have in print. I mean, none of my friends had ever even heard of Guardians of the Galaxy before the film came out. Yes I know there will be hard-core comic book geeks out there that might be having a heart attack at the thought of someone not know who or what Guardians of the Galaxy is/ are, and I’m sure there’s some hipsters out there who don’t like the film simply because it’s popular now. But I really wasn’t up for watching this. I thought it would be quickly churned-out garbage from a big studio simply to tide them over until the second Avengers film, ready to do battle with DC Comics’s upcoming Justice League film. But I was out-voted 5-1 so we went to see Guardians of the Galaxy.

Let me just say this: Yay for democracy! Without it I’d have missed out on this gem of a film. I was so wrong about everything to do with it (except of course that the cast were going to be pretty impressive regardless of plot, story or script). Guardians of the Galaxy is an absolutely…dare I say it… stellar film that should be seen by all. Although I’d say all those 15 an above, I couldn’t believe that the film got a 12A classification. There’s nothing too raunchy or racy in it, but the language and, at times, the context in the film gets a little too much for what I’d consider to be a 12A film – and I’m pretty liberal when it comes to my opinions on who should/could see what. It’s a little slow to start, and I really thought I was going to get the typical, boring, heart-felt feel-sorry-for-the-protagonist origin story, and in a sense, that’s kind of what it was but it quickly diverted from that and then the film really kicked off. Despite the characters being pretty far-out there in terms of design, (a genetically engineered racoon and a talking tree to mention just 2 of the main characters) the film was pretty easy to settle in to and pretty soon you didn’t question why That character and That character were even in existence, it all just neatly slotted into place. This was probably due to the brilliant CGI used in the film. Superhero and fantasy films tend to fall into two categories; the use of GCI because ‘why not?’ and the use of bad CGI. Occasionally, you’ll come across one of these genres of film who have balanced just the right amount of CGI with it actually being good CGI. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the films that falls into the latter category. The plot is a little bit ridiculous, but when all is taken into account it fits quite well. But the shining jewel in the crown of this film is the humour. I haven’t continuously laughed at a film like I have with this once since Tropic Thunder – and the best thing is, Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t trying to be a comedy! It’s just a really funny film. There really are jokes in there for everyone, from physical humour, to slapstick, to innuendo and even a couple of on-the-nose sexual ones (black light anyone?). the humour also doesn’t take away from any other aspects of the film, the drama still has tension, the bad guys are still just as dark and menacing and the action isn’t belittled by jokes. In fact, the humour works with the other components of the film to enhance them and make them better. I cannot recommend this film enough, even Robert Downey Jr. has said that it is better than the Avengers, and I have to agree with him. Victoria Tickle GoGuide Magazine Contributor

intense, understated, poignant, funny...
here probably hasn’t been a doctor as anticipated as Peter Capaldi. His announcement as ‘The Doctor’ was built up for ages followed by a wait of over a year until his first episode. And he turned out to be worth waiting for. His first moments after regeneration were Shakespearean, and I mean that in the full acting range required of the bard. He was intense, understated, poignant, funny and it’s just the first episode!

Great as Capaldi is, Shakespeare isn’t providing him with his lines. Shakespeare isn’t weaving stories that leave the audience with a sense of poetic justice. Stephen Moffat’s approach to writing seems to rely on finding and awesome hook to pitch in a boardroom and then attempting to fit a story around it. Before we had ‘DINOSAURS… on a SPACESHIP!’, and for the first episode it was ‘DINOSAUR… in VICTORIAN LONDON!’ This approach can either make you forget the story for the sake of the hook (like with dinosaurs on a spaceship) or forgetting the hook for the sake of the story. By the time we were into the plot about biomechanical, steampunk droids harvesting body bits I had forgotten about the T-Rex now lying dead in the Thames. Moffat is not the only writer to have this

method of storytelling. Mark Gatiss hooked us in with ‘Robot of Sherwood’ (ROBIN HOOD… and a SPACESHIP!) but saves it for the light-hearted episodes with humour that can carry these off-the- wall premises. As we get into the series, Moffat does lay off the special effects for what he’s really good at: tapping into our primal sense of fear. The absent villains in the episode ‘Listen’ reminded us that this was the writer who created the weeping angels, the empty child and the Ponds’ alternate realities on the TARDIS. This more thoughtful approach along with Peter Capaldi on the cast could mark this series as amongst Doctor Who’s best. Becci Wood for GoGuide Magazine Contributor

T
he Walking Dead kicks off again this Autumn with Season 5 starting in October with presumably the usual 16 episode season, 8 before Xmas and 8 after, no doubt including a cliff-hanger mid-season ending. So where did we leave our zombie killing heroes last season? Well, in what was probably the best season ever (other than Season 1 of course) 4’s 16 episodes were pretty spectacular. There were new people, new romances, lost homes, lost innocence and lost friends.
SEASON 5
From the start of the season we see a united camp, after the arrival of the rescued residents from Woodbury, the little who survived the Governor’s wrath have joined forces with the main group and settled into a normal existence, well as normal an existence as you’d expect. Rick struggles with his responsibility as leader, gives up the gun in favour of a garden hoe. An exploration run to a market gives our first hint that there are still plenty of surprises on board for this season, Rick has a forage in the woods where he meets a woman who reminds him what he might have become during his ‘cracked up’ phase. Episode 2 sees our first really big event. Our friends are probably in the safest place they could be, a triple line wire fence surrounds the main prison block, internal lockable wings separate the prison into blocks, and each cell has a lockable door. They are in the safest place they could be so what could threaten them? The warnings signs come in the form of a sick pig, then one of the kids falls ill and one dark night he dies and becomes their worst enemies, a Walker inside their safe haven while everyone sleeps. By the end of episode 2 we’re down a good few members of the extended family. The mysterious and fatal flu like virus spreads through the camp and forces half the team go out in search of medicine, Rick on a separate run finds out the truth about what Carol had done with some of the flu victims and decides to ostracise her from the group and leaves her to fend for herself in a small town. By the end of episode 5 the the virus takes its toll and the inside is again struggling to contain the dying and to make matters worse the prison courtyard is overrun by walkers before our medicine run team get back to save the day for some. The episode culminating in the site of a lone figure watching the prison from the woods, and we thought we’d seen the last of… ‘The Governor’. We then find out that the governor has raised another small army and in episode 8 he kidnaps Hershel and Michonne and again tries to take over the prison by threatening to kill them unless Rick and his group give up the prison… give up their home. A bloody battle ensues and the episode ends with the whole group fleeing the prison in a similar fashion to what we seen when they had to leave Hershel’s farm. Again we see our group splintered and separated into smaller groups, with no home to go back to, most eventually discover a trail leading to a place called Terminus, scrawled messages tell of sanctuary somewhere along the abandoned train line where, "those who arrive, survive." The thought from most ‘in the know’ is that Terminus is the home to the cannibals as featured in the comics but this was not officially revealed Season 4 ended. We do see what looks like a pile of human bones somewhere in the compound but we await the reveal to tell us that for sure in Season 5.

Where are all of the characters? Well by the end of Season 4, Rick, Michonne, Carl, Daryl, Glenn, Maggie, Sasha, Bob, Tara, Eugene, Abraham and Rosita had all reached Terminus and were all imprisoned in the railroad car. Carol and Tyreese are probably on their way to Terminus. Last seen heading in the right direction after Carol had to deal with the ‘Lizzie issue’. Having told Tyreese that she was the one who killed and burned up Karen their relationship is probably as low as it could be. So no doubt we’ll see more of that journey before they are reunited with the main group. Beth was last seen running out of the house where she and Daryl had been staying. She was kidnapped by some unknown assailants in a van, we’ve still to officially find out what happened after that.
Where are we and what’s coming up?
Having made it to Terminus the fifth season kicks off with Rick and the group appearing to be trapped. Outgunned, outnumbered and stuck in a train car where they are surely awaiting a grizzly fate. In the episodes that follow we will find out the true nature and motives of the people of Terminus which, as we’ve mentioned before, appears to be a human slaughter house managed by cannibals, and hopefully their continued search for a cure in Washington, D.C. As well as the scenes witnessed in recent trailers Robert Kirkman confirmed that the characters will definitely not spend the whole season in the railroad car. Escaping though will require the characters to embrace their "ingenuity and creativity and somewhat savageness". "Stories will break apart and intersect. The characters will find love and hate. Peace and conflict. Contentment and terror. And, in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them ... After all they've seen, all they've done, all they've sacrificed, lost, and held onto no matter what the cost ... " The Walking Dead. Some other teasers that various members of the writing team have alluded to in many recent interviews include… Season 5 being “more action heavy” We will find out “what happened to Beth?”

There will properly be “another romance” Morgan Jones “will be back”, although not necessarily in season 5. Morgan is the first guy Rick meets after escaping the hospital and returning home way back in the pilot episode, and once more with Carl in Season 3. With so many alpha males involved there may be a “power struggle” at some point in the season. Recent rumour of our crossbow-wielding favourite Daryl being gay broke many a female viewers’ hearts, but those have been counter rumoured by the possibility of a romantic relationship with Beth played by Emily Kinney. "I don't know, you have to wait and find out," she told Entertainment Weekly. "I would say last season what you saw, there's definitely a connection, and a connection that's growing. And they care about each other a lot, and so there's definitely something really special there." Apparently, Rick Grimes and his group of survivors will manage to spot Hershel Greene's once-fragile youngest daughter at some point in the new season.
So who’s back? Who’s new? Well as we’ve seen at the end of Season 4 those left alive that we know of were Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Carl (Chandler Riggs), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Beth (Emily Kinney), Tyreese (Chad Coleman), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), and Bob (Lawrence Gilliard) and these are all expected to feature in Season 5. Some of those we met in the previous season who have reportedly been promoted to regulars include Tara (Alanna Masterson), Rosita (Christian Serratos), Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Eugene (Josh McDermitt) and latest arrival and leader of the Terminus people, Gareth (Andrew J. West). New for Season 5 is the character of Noah (Tyler James Williams), a character, like Daryl, who is unique to the TV series. Of those coming on board that we know little of is The Wire's Seth Gilliam, who doesn’t even have an official character name, or more it hasn’t been released yet so best bets are on him playing Gabriel Stokes, a preacher directly from the original comics, Stokes and Rick’s paths cross at roughly the Terminus time line in the comics but everything is being kept pretty much under wraps for now. When we look forward to Season 5, everyone’s thought turn to probably the biggest question for the show, like the other big show where people die on a regular basis Game of Thrones, we all want to know…. Who will die next? I like the fact that The Walking Dead has a wealth of material to reference and that they have strayed just enough off the main path of the comics to make you feel that no one is really safe? Well apart from maybe 1-2 characters. So much so that characters have even been specifically written just for the TV show, Daryl being one. They have also killed off major players and loved characters in order to either stick to or change the story, wise man Dale, Rick’s wife Lori, his old cop partner Shane and never to be forgotten Hershel. DVDREVIEWS As it turns out Lisa and her family might be ghosts, stuck in a pre-16th birthday sometime in 1985. For a bit only Lisa is aware of living the same day every day, or has ‘woken up’ as we learn from the other spooky guy who pops up later to fix the phones. In the basement she finds a secret door behind the washer driers, in the attic she hears bumps and finds a VHS video tape (and a TV video to play it on????), she finds a Ouija board and tries to contact whoever is in the house, the lights start to flicker off and on… At this point things start to change in the repeated daily routine, her dad starts to act strange, he now smokes, and talks to people who aren’t there. She starts to hear more whispers and gets visited by a strange force in the night… and I’ll stop there, we’ve heard it all before. Overall the script by Brian King and Matthew Brian King seems to add little in the way of fresh ideas, doesn’t seem to be focused and at point feel down right schoolboy with ideas dragged from all over to try to hold a weak initial story line together. Maybe they hadn’t seen ‘Groundhog Day’, magically had a similar idea for a horror based movie using the basic idea and then watched a tonne of movies in the horror genre to get inspiration, then mistook inspiration for blatantly ripping off the basic look, style, feel and a lot of the time entire elements from the likes of Beetlejuice, The Shining, Insidious and Sinister to name but a few.

aunter starring Abigail Breslin, Michelle Nolden, Stephen McHattie and Peter Outerbridge and Directed by Vincenzo Natali borrows heavily from movies before it, and when I say heavily I really mean a tonne, in fact I’d probably struggle to pick out just one theme, or even one scene which hasn’t been seen somewhere else before.
One for the true scary movie fans only so you can tick it off the list.
Lisa Johnson (Abigail Breslin) awakes to the sound of her brother on the walkie-talkie by her bed, she gets up and pulls on her Siouxsie and the Banshees t-shirt and heads downstairs where she informs her little brother to watch out for the ‘Blinky’ Pac Man character in his video game as ‘he always traps you on the left’, she talks to him about his imaginary friend Edgar before her mom asks her to go down the basement to do the laundry and about her birthday plans for the following day. The car is broken so it might affect their plans if dad can’t fix it. Lisa tells her to ‘ask me tomorrow’ and she heads down to the basement and kicks off the laundry. She then stares blankly out of an open door into the thick blanket of fog that seems to surround the house before her creepy dad pops up and tells her to stay indoors and ‘practice her clarinet or something’ ‘This is the story of Peter Wolf…….’ Lisa gets about one line into her clarinet piece before her mom shouts her down as her parents ‘wanna have a talk’ Not sure why they have this scene appear at this time… as it then reveals the overall plot of the movie and the ‘repeated day’ scenario. So after having the talk, which I’m guessing has been a repeated talk, the next day seems to start in the same way as before, everything’s the same as it was yesterday, but if she knows…. why put the same clothes on? She hears a noise in the basement, we don’t know if it’s the same noise that she’s heard before because we’ve never seen the whole laundry scene before? Then later on some whispering… for a while you get that ‘has this happened before?’ feeling. The movie gets a little lost around now and pretty much stays that way, I even forgot what movie I was watching at one point.

DVD/BLU-RAY REVIEWS sucking, vampire’esque cheerleaders, stunning of course, but crazy psycho’s monster bitches none the less and they will eat your neighbours at the drop of a hat. I haven’t seen the original but if the visual effects in this one are anything to go by it surely must be a masterpiece of cinematography and… yeh right… visually the whole thing is pathetic. All Cheerleaders Die doesn’t really have enough of anything to save it from mediocrity, well apart for the ‘hot girls’ as they say stateside.

s you can see, the All Cheerleaders Die cover is bright, brash and full of warnings for what I was about to watch. Maybe not a typical horror movie cover but definitely sums up what you’re going to get in this offering from director and writer team Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson. Both having written and released a previous incarnation of the film back in (2001). Across the ‘Slasher’ genre teenagers have been a staple ingredient right from the start, Friday the 13th, Halloween etc. all bumped off their fair share of post pubescent cannon fodder. Watching random teenagers die one after another in movies has been rife since around the 1970s with the main people watching probably being the very people being done in. Then we had the crossover of the genre with comedy slasher movies like Scream and now there’s ‘All Cheerleaders Die’ which seems to be trying to blend a slasher type movie with a bad fantasy movie, and ummmm, It doesn’t work for me. It’s an old story which has been rehashed to death and the introduction of magic juju beads isn’t enough to make it stand out from the crown in a good way. Here’s the rub…. It’s not an adult, or even teen horror and it’s not a fantasy, there’s no real connection to the main characters. The things associated with horror aren’t really that scary, gory or shocking and the fantasy aspects aren’t far enough out to satisfy anyone but the most surface fantasy buff. Maddy (Caitlin Stasey), is out for revenge on the cheerleading squad who were involved in the accidental death of her friend the year before. She enrols in their group and kicks off her plan to pull things apart from the inside. When disaster strikes and they are all killed her emo trainee witch friend Leena (Siaona Smit-McPhee) uses her magic stones to bring them back to life, the same but not the same, as you’d expect. The cheerleaders are now a bunch of super-strong, blood-

i West’s new movie The Sacrament is a horror/thriller that takes its ideas directly from the 1978 happenings at Jim Jones’ People’s Temple in Guyana.
The movie is presented as a found-footage documentary type scenario which plays out practically the same story as seen in the 1978 events. Kentucker Audley plays Patrick, a young guy who becomes concerned about his sister’s involvement in what he sees as a “hippie cult” and after having trouble finding her he eventually tracks her down to an unnamed South American location only accessible by air. He devises a plan to pose as a filmmaker and flies to the location with his video journalist (Joe Swanberg) and camera operator (AJ Bowen). When he arrives at the remote Eden Parish compound he has to do a bit of convincing with the cult to let him stay as he ‘neglected’ to mention the addition of the film crew. When they are allowed in they find a host of idealistic followers and ‘Father’, the leader played by Gene Jones. Father communicates with his flock using various broadcasting over speakers mounted around the camp. Amy Seimetz plays Patrick’s sister Caroline, who attempts to reassure her sibling that everything is fantastic and insisting “We built heaven here on earth”. Things are less than idyllic and the story soon takes a turn for the worst. I’ve only ever felt that a couple of found footage type movies really hit the mark and there is certainly more hits than misses, The Sacrament probably hits just around the middle. With movies like The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers under his belt West knows exactly how to crank up the tension. You may find yourself watching this movie and wanting to look away but that’s what the best movies do right? Knowing the Jonestown story already I think you’ll enjoy the feeling of having that impending knowledge that something really bad is going to happen and there’s nothing you can do to stop it, if you have no knowledge of the outcome then be prepared for a pretty shocking hour and a half.

verall I’m not a fan of spoof movies, it’s been a long time since there was a good one and the trend appears to be continuing with A Haunted House 2, but as I love a horror movie for me it’s worth a watch. The original movie from back in 2013 did get some pretty stinging reviews but was obviously good enough to warrant a follow up and they are pretty much of a muchness. So with the same directing/writing team on board if you liked the first one you’ll pretty much like the second. It’s pretty much business as usual with the same kind of humour and jokes. So having made it through his exploits in the first movie Malcom (Marlon Wayans), somehow has landed himself with a readymade family and moved into their new home together, life looks peachy for him, girlfriend, Megan (Jamie Pressly), her two kids, Pressly’s main role seems to be to not see anything that goes on and to argue with Malcolm. Son, Wyatt (Steele Stebbins), and his imaginary friend seems hell bent on increasing his vocabulary level to that of a grumpy old sailor, while daughter, Becky (Ashley Rrickards), finds the box from ‘The Possession’ kicking off a string of gags parodying that movie. Sinister also gets major AHH treatment after Malcolm finds some old movie footage. I know it’s a parody movie but when I say that most of the content is something you’ve seen before I don’t mean that in a good way, it’s the comedy elements that are the stuff being rehashed, you’ve seen them numerous times before in various guises across TV shows, stand-up routines and of course in mediocre movies. Nothing new sticks out at all throughout the movie. In fact the only real thing that does stick out is the amount of crudeness and racially based gags it contains. Not good at all unless that’s what you’re looking for, I was looking for any form of improvement, of any advancement but all you get is more of the same which I suppose some people might still like?

pen Grave’s opening scenes of a man appearing to come back to life and start to fix himself internally are soon replaced with the gruesome vision of him trapped in a large pit with bodies everywhere, there’s a gun, then there’s a rope, then there’s confusion.
he Descent is probably one of the truly scariest movies you’ll see, or have seen over the past 20 years anyway, it’s certainly up there in the top 10. It’s a low-budget offering from our very own Scottish shores and director Neil Marshall has created a suspense fuelled, claustrophobic master of the horror genre with not a dude in sight… blending together a couple of classic themes and handling them in just the right way to make a movie as good, if not better than the originals.
Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) doesn’t know what’s going on, he has amnesia with no idea of who he is? of how he got there? or why he’s there? After using the rope to escape the pit he wanders through woods and eventually comes across a house where he finds a group of suspicious, people who seem to be suffering similar amnesia issues. As time passed they begin to remember stuff, memories, relationships, they come in bursts but before they get a chance to fully recover the find that the house is littered with strange crazie/zombie’esque things, before they can remember anything really helpful they need to try to survive, luckily there are a stash up guns at hand. It’s going to be good old zombie movie right? Well nope… not really, from the off we are subjected to directors Gonzalo López-Gallego and Biliana Jovanovic’s attempts to introduce us to some pretty un-convincing characters who are really too non-descript for you to really care about anyway. They don’t know themselves so it kinda makes it twice a difficult somehow to get a connection with any of them. After an initially promising 15mins or so things get pretty grim and all we’re watching is someone’s ideas on improving something that doesn’t actually need improving, in fact it actually feels like a big step back for the horror/infected/crazies genre. I suppose Open Grave does provide just enough to warrant a viewing for horror fans. Id is far from ground breaking and with a bit less fiddling with the concept it could very well have been a completely different story. Bland Bland Bland….
Sarah (Shauna McDonald) is involved in car crash that claims the lives of her husband and daughter while on the way back from a white-water rafting trip along with friends Juno (Natalie Mendoza) and Beth (Alex Reid). One year later her friend Juno gets everyone back together for another adventure, a climbing expedition in the Appalachian Mountains with three other thrill seekers. Sarah is a little apprehensive and nervous when the Juno suggests exploring some caves she has found. The caves narrow and dark and difficult to navigate and to make matters worse Sarah gets and overwhelming sense that they are not alone. The group soon discover signs that they are in fact not alone and that their cave buddies are hungry… very hungry and they just might be on the menu. Being an all-female cast it is great to see a collection of characters who are not just your typical ‘Slasher Movie’ screamers. They are smart, tough, are not stereotypes and make their mark well in the movie, oh… and there is definitely no need for anyone to strip to their ‘panties’ to get noticed thanks to Marshall’s straight forward and simple directing. There is plenty of gore around to satisfy all but those looking for a proper gorefest and no story at all, for me there is just the right amount of both in this movie. There’s a rumour that the movie is a metaphor for the ‘battle of the sexes’ but all I watched was a top notch horror flick that isn’t trying to be something it isn’t, not re-inventing the wheel so to speak, just using it to great effect. There is also a couple of endings for the movie so make sure you get the UK one which fits the story well and NOT the US one which is frankly pretty crap.

ell what can I say about The Sims 4? Overall it’s like Maxis have taken one step forward and two steps back with the new game.
One of the many things I love about the Sims 3 is how open it is. You can make him/her leave your house, walk to the shops, the park, drive to work, go to the beach, and go partying all without the slightest hint of a loading screen. With Sims 4, it feels a hell of a lot smaller. In the town you play in there are a so few areas that you can actually go to, it’s not all open world this time. When you do travel to these areas there are now loading screens that take place… and I don’t know about anyone else but I don’t these moves were right for the game. Graphically there haven’t been any major improvements across the board but they do seem to be more fluent and smooth. Getting to the bits that are actually good about the Sims 4… well the ‘Build a Sim’ section is better than ever. You now use click and pull mechanic that give a more accurate result than the sliders in previous games. This gives you the freedom to create some rather accurate looking Sims of yourself or others or create some monstrosities. You can also change your walk style which I can see being funny but I haven’t used it yet. There are also some bad things about the creation mode… 1. You can only pick three traits. Three little traits, well technically you get a forth, that comes in the form of your lifetime aspiration. 2. You can’t freely change the colour of your clothes anymore, instead your just given a few pre-set colours for the handful of clothes you are currently provided with. The big thing that Maxis is trying to push with the Sims 4 is the all new emotions. Sims now act more realistically and their mood affects how they behave in the world. A happy Sim will be active, chat to

other Sims and may even do push ups, while a sad Sim will be antisocial and their posture and walk animation will change. Like in the Sims 3, traits also affect how you can act towards other Sims, flirty Sims can easily turn things on to the steamier side of conversations. There’s also more animations relating to your perks and even what the current mood your Sim is in. In order to actually witness these new mechanics you have to leave your house and find other Sims to interact with, but these load screens really kill the mood. Fair enough they’re short but it still feels like a massive step backwards. Even when you leave your house for work, you can’t freely look about your town to see what everyone else is up to because you’re trapped at looking at your empty house. To make things seem even worse, there are only ten public venues that you can actually visit between the two neighbourhoods available, with some even replicated? There’s only so much you can do with such a small area so pretty much it feels there’s not a lot to do within the two neighbourhoods. You also keep running into the same people pretty much everywhere you go so meeting new people can get pretty tough. On a good note Sims can now multitask or chat to other Sims while performing another task. You no longer have to break away from cooking your dinner just to talk to another Sim, you’ll carry on your chats while preparing your meal. I’ve also seen my Sim continue on reading his book whilst sitting on the toilet. The Sims 4 build mode is a great improvement over The Sims 3’s version. Rooms are so much easier to design with the new pre-set rooms that you can just drag and drop from the menu. Rooms can now be picked up and dragged around instead of having to level the entire room first. You can drag walls to increase the length or width of the room instead of knocking them down, plus any furniture that’s next the will also drag along with the wall. You can add a foundation to your house at any point, you don’t have to demolish your entire house just so you can add some decking to your garden. The problem with this though is that when you add a foundation it is applies to all the structures on the lot, which can get frustrating cause you can’t have any split levels or if you’re planning on making a garage attached to your house it’ll just won’t’ look right. But, come to think of it, since there are no cars in The Sims 4 yet, there’s actually no point to build garage at this current time???? It’s kind of hard to say if you should buy The Sims 4 - or spend the money on expansion packs for the Sims 3 – as you’ll probably end up disappointed with the lack of content in the new offering. Should you buy it now and feel this wasn’t worth it or hold off till it’s been improved with the expense of expansion packs which will undoubtedly cost a fortune (or not even buy it at all). fter playing Destiny for a few hours and having already seen videos on YouTube about the last level… And I was thinking to myself, I better not be near the end of this game already… I’ve only just arrived on Venus… mainly because I was having such a blast playing this game! The best thing about Destiny is its fantastic gameplay mechanics. The physics may not be to mine or everyone’s liking (there have been to many occasions where I needed to jump over an obstacle that one could easy step over) but the firefights are where the real fun lies. If you’ve played Halo before or a fan of the series, you can feel the similarities within Destiny but with a lot more dynamics thrown in. Each class has the ability to glide in the air for a couple of seconds, double jump and even teleport at short-range. Grenades are affectively infinite but need to be cooled down after each use. As normal in similar games levelling up means you can unlock and improve your character skills. Bungie has done a fantastic job of creating a beautiful world for Destiny. Once you start the game you’re treated to grand vistas giving you this feeling of a grand scale to explore. This, however is merely an illusion, the world of Destiny feels small in comparison to how it appears. It isn’t as open as I had hoped it would be and it’s such a shame as well as planets like Venus are beautifully designed, but you’re given such a small area to explore. So far Destiny has four main planets for you to explore. It will take a good while for you to get about place. So you’re given a summonable ‘Sparrow bike’, which from what I’ve seen so far there are only one style of transport that you can summon. The game is not as much as an open-world RPG or an MMO, but then, despite its similarities, Destiny

simply takes small parts from each genre and integrates brilliantly. The music of Destiny definitely adds to the atmosphere, especially when the eerie tone and chants that fits the ‘Hive’ enemies perfectly, until the completely out of place techno music starts (not saying it’s bad, quite catchy actually, but out of place). Even the load screen animations while travelling to another area are pretty to look at. Throughout your journey’s you’ll face four different races of enemies, all of which are diverse and dynamic in their tactics. The sneaky, multi-armed ‘Fallen’ make good use of cover and will try and flank your position. The intimidating robotic ‘Vex’, can teleport directly in front of you out of nowhere, the ‘Hive’ are brooding force that will flush you out of cover and rush at you, and finally the ‘Cabal’ are a huge heavily armoured bunch where some even sport massive shields. The bosses on the other hand can at times feel like bigger versions of normal enemies that just take longer kill. There are other bosses though like the Spider Tank which will require you to the find weak spots. The combat overall is actually very good and is probably one of the best aspect of the game. The one thing that lets Destiny down most of all is the story… there practically isn’t one. The intro tells the tale of this massive, godlike, mysterious sphere called The Traveler that lead to great leaps forward in technological advancements and even increases the life span of humans. This object also has enemies only known as The Darkness that caused a massive war in which the good guys are still recovering from their last victory. Now The Darkness is ready for another attack and we may not survive this time, and that’s all the history we’re given in Destiny. There’s no real introduction or back stories to the enemies that you face. I don’t even know what The Darkness is; is it another force that we haven’t met yet? Is it the Vex? Or all the enemies combined? There’s other character’s that you come across during the missions but you learn next to nothing about them. Destiny isn’t a game that should really be played alone, it can get pretty tough at times, especially when you’re not tackling missions with your online ‘Fireteam’, where you are auto matched up with other players for tougher strike missions. With that said the main missions of Destiny, or the story missions anyway, can probably be completed… and fairly quickly if you just stick with the story. When you’re done completing the game it’s pretty much just all about trying to get the best gear you can get your hands on. Events such as the Daily Heroic and weekly Heroic missions offer higher rewards for playing missions and strikes that you’ve already played. The only difference being is you can take up these strike missions by yourself. The Tower acts as the social hub where you can buy gear, weapons, accept bounties and decode engrams. There are four factions in the tower that you ‘pledge allegiance’ too. By doing this you need to gain a reputation for that specific faction and then you’re able to buy stronger armour or weapons although in order to buy these items you need to collect ‘Marks’. The Decoder takes your engrams – which are like fossils – and decodes them (obviously) to give you a random item depending on whether they are an armour or a weapon engram.
play. The good and bad aspects of PvP (Player vs Player) is that it sorely relies on its solid gameplay to keep people playing, and of course the rewards you have the chances of winning. Other than the latter everything else about Destiny’s PvP is rather plain and dull. There are only four modes to play; Control has two teams of six battling over three control points, Rumble is a free-for-all mode, Clash is your standard team deathmatch, and finally Skirmish is a small tactical 3v3 mode. The map sizes aren’t extremely massive or interactive at all, but they are just as detailed as the PvE versions (Player vs. Environment). There are only a handful of maps so far but nothing to extraordinary, there are only two maps that are large enough to contain vehicles within them although the maps don’t necessarily feel open or wide enough to have vehicular warfare. There’s no killstrikes either, nor pickups within the levels, apart from when the occasional ammo for your heavy drops – then it’s a mad rush to the ammo boxes. There are rewards given at the end of the round regardless of it being a win or loss for you, but it doesn’t seem to reward players based on skill or total during the round, sometimes you are rewarded and sometimes not. For example, I got 22 kills and 5 deaths in a game and got no reward for my part. In fact I was the number 1 player (not bragging) for three games in row and got no reward. The rewards themselves aren’t always particularly good but its principle! I was the best, therefore I should be rewarded! So in a sense why would you keep playing competitive mode if you don’t get rewarded for being good? This goes for gaining reputation as well for your chosen faction, I made Dead Orbit look like a beast but still only got the same amount of reputation anyone else would get just being a part of the winning team. So, overall I would say Destiny is a game for everyone, sure maybe more for the FPS shooters out there, but the other genres that are incorporated within the game do work extremely well. I just can’t believe how the story is being told with this game, it’s such a disappointment… but you know what I can’t stop playing the game as it’s so addictive! I want to get my Titan to level 30 (which is the current cap for you character), I want to get exotic gear, I do replay the same levels over and over again, I try to keep winning bland competitive multiplayer matches in the Crucible and getting no rewards… why? ’ve always had a soft spot for Dead Rising games, even though the story can be quirky or the graphics aren’t always the best but the gameplay is usually so much fun to play that I would happily play again this time round with a co-op friend. The game in a way slightly contradicts itself, the sole purpose really in Dead Rising 3 is to kill as many zombies as possible (to me at least) but it’s contradicted by the time limit you have to accomplish missions – but I do have a love/ hate relationship with the time limits in the game. They give the game a sense of urgency and realism – unlike games such as Grand Theft Auto or Skyrim where you can leave a mission for days with no consequences even though there may be a dragon currently destroying the world… Gone have the days of being locked in a giant shopping centre or casino’s, Dead Rising raises the bar by letting you lose in a city. It’s not the biggest open world environment set in a city but I do love open nature of it. There are tons of shops to loot and open buildings that house even more zombies and weapons diagrams. You can feel how small the map really is when you’re driving by vehicle though, the designers try to hide the issue by planting road blocks to shorten you route and forcing you to ditch your car or bike and go on foot. Probably the most impressive aspect of this game is the amount of zombies that you can fit on screen, and there’s enough zombie diversity that it does make you think that every zombie is a new encounter. Of course you don’t really spend enough time admiring the details of the zombies because you’re trying to find as many ways of brutally kill them as you can. Combat is pretty smooth and is always exciting and easy – the easy part can always be misleading as it will give you a sense of cockiness, then

you’re charging your way into a massive horde of zombies and before you know it you’re getting your ass kicked. This makes you strategize your inventory so that you have different weapons that are useful for all situations. Particularly when night falls and zombies are at their strongest. There are 300+ weapons that you can collect or make throughout the game and you don’t’ really get bored of any weapon, instead you actually begin to miss them since they’ll break after using them for a short period of time. But some of the created weapons are really unique and deserve the effort to be created. The collectable blueprints are back, goofy, and better than ever. This time round your character, Nick Ramos can create weapons anywhere at any time. You no longer need to haul over to workbench to combine jewels and a torch to create a lightsaber or combine a dragon mask with an umbrella to have an awesome flying attack. Throughout the entire zombie killing you’ll gain experience points which you use in the broad character upgrade system, where you can gain new moves, increase your health, have more inventory slots etc. It’s done rather well and you can feel the upgrades having an effect on your gameplay. Also making a return in a big way is the vehicle blueprints, and since there’s more area to traverse you can expect to find a few more than there was in Dead Rising 2. For me though the best vehicle combination is the ‘RollerHawg’. You get by combining a chopper bike and a steamroller and you basically end up with a bike that has a steamroller as a front wheel and flamethrowers on each side, and strangely you can hand break turn with too. I could never take the story seriously as well, as you’ll no doubt have great fun making Nick wear all manner of ridiculous attires. And when Nick is breaking down because he has just killed a human it’s hard to connect when he’s wearing a mini skirt and a knight’s helmet and is about to push zombies on a wheelchair that also electrocutes them… If the gameplay is fun and ridiculous then why can’t the story be the same way as well? You’ve also got some zombie character clichés as well, like the overly scared woman at the beginning that you just want to kill right away. If you’re playing solo you can take a companion with you. They also have their own side quest’s that you can do, but other than for story purposes they AI companions really just get in the way most of the time, but they won’t try to kill you this time if you accidently hit them. I’m also a big fan of the fact that when you encounter an AI’s that out in the world and needs rescuing you don’t always have to escort them back to the safe house. The Psychos, which are optional boss battles, are always good to be honest but most of them are easily memorable from a combat point of view. Like the overly obese woman in a scooter where one of her attack moves is the ability to projectile vomit at you at will. What makes Dead Rising 3 even better is the drop-in co-op and playing with a friend. This makes the game twice as fun since there are now two of you finding new ways of massacring zombies. Dead Rising 3 may not be the prettiest game out (and I’m playing on the PC version at really high rates) but its solid zombie-slaying conflict and the almost endless quantities of undead and the bizarre weapons combinations go a long way to keeping you playing. Even with a rather lengthy campaign, the Dead Rising series just keeps getting better and I can’t wait to what they do next. Pity it’s not a PS4 release. ight of the Living Dead is a 1968 American independent zombie film directed by George A. Romero, starring Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea and Karl Hardman. It premiered on October 1, 1968, and was completed on a US$114,000 budget. The film became a financial success, grossing $12 million domestically and $18 million internationally. It has been a cult classic ever since. Night of the Living Dead was heavily criticized at its release owing to explicit content, but eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” The film has entered the public domain due to an error by the distributor. The story follows characters Ben (Duane Jones), Barbra (Judith O’Dea), and five others trapped in a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania which is attacked by unnamed “living dead” monsters, drawing on earlier depictions in popular culture of zombies. Night of the Living Dead was the basis of five subsequent Living Dead films (1978–2010) also directed by Romero, and has inspired remakes.
