GUIDE is a local online magazine for the West Lothian area. We are trying to be less focused on local ‘news’ and more a, ‘what’s or ‘happening’ guide to the local area. At the moment we are heavily focused on the whats going on in the local music scene, ats on and good @ the movies and what is happening in the world of PC/Console gaming.
e do have a pretty modern approach to GoGuide content and eventually hope to produce articles on subjects outside our usual ff such as Clubbing, Internet, Lifestyle, Sport and Fitness etc.

he music scene in West Lothian is a living breathing entity that grows and contracts as quick as the weather changes but one thing you can be pretty sure of though is that it never ever dies. Throughout the year even we struggle sometimes to keep up with the comings and goings, breakups and
formings, solo projects and band mergings that go on around us and to fit all those things into our wee magazines pages. An old urban myth explains that ‘If you live in a big city your never more than 6ft away from a rat’, well in West Lothian i think you are never more than 100ft away from someone with a guitar. We seem to breed bands like rabbits in the spring and we just want to get in as many of them on our pages as we can just in case we miss something.
So here we have the GoGuide ‘13 for ‘13’ which is a quick highlight featuring some of the newer bands from 2012/13 or some bands and artists that we might have missed so far. We posed a few ‘Get To Know You’ type questions to each of the guys just to get us started. We will also try to remember some of the bands we lost along the way in our ‘R.I.P - Gone but Not Forgotten’ section. Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine

artin Livingston has been around the local music scene with a couple of bands and as a solo performer for a good few years now.
The latest creation to feature his song writing talents is The Changes, a no nonsence rock ‘n’ roll band with a kinda sound that blends rock with mod, phsycadelia and just a wee flavour of one Mr Neil Young (as if Martin could miss it). For more info catch the band @ www.facebook.com/thechangeslive www.thechangeslive.co.uk
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it?
TC: It was in one of Andrew's dreams and when mentioned it seemed to fit.
GG: How long have you been a band?
TC: Just under six months.
GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?
TC: Martin Livingstone vocals/rhythm guitar, Andrew Harrington Backing vocals/Lead Guitar, Stewart Mckeen Backing vocals/bass, John Macauley Drums. We have all been in bands over the years and got together to smash a hole in the Scottish music industry.
GG: So far where has been the best place you have played LIVE?
TC: Electric Circus Edinburgh, Pivo Pivo and Ivory Blacks in Glasgow
GG: Who are the major influences for the band?
TC: Far Far to many to list
GG: Describe your sound in three words?
TC: No Nonsense RocknRoll.
GG: What song of yours best sums up the band?
TC: Mind Trip.
GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be?
TC: Psychedelic Mod Rock.
GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
TC: Its good, There are alot of top unsigned bands out there. There needs to be more places to play that don't demand the bands bring a crowd. There is far too much pay to play! It should be a promoters job to fill a venue. Its a shame but it usually falls down to bands so its hard to get your name out there. The scene is very healthy at the moment the are various band on the verge of breaking through. TC: The modern faces, The Jesus Trip, The Vibe, The Difference, The Untitled. There are also a couple of other bands like The Mowbrays, The Red Light District with different and unique sounds.
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?

TE: Not really! We all wanted to be in a band that worked well, and luckily for us we immediately had a great chemistry while playing. TE: Nearly 2 years now, our first practice was the 26th February 2011. TE: Harry Bircher-Lead Guitar and Lead Vocals Sam Carlyle-Bass Guitar Chuck McAulay-Drums and Backing Vocals Me (Harry) and Chuck met on join my band. It's a website where you can join or start a band through other members' advertisements. We were struggling to find a bassist so I remembered Sam playing bass in my school so I asked him. He had just left his former band. We have been through a good number of rhythm guitarists but none have really worked out, we discovered we work better as a 3 piece band. TE: Probably our first real gig in a place called The Dreadnought in Bathgate. We had an accoustic gig a few days before it but it was only a small half hour slot. The Dreadnought gig was on the 14th September 2011. Wasn't our best performance (obviously we've improved alot since then!) but the crowd was mostly people our age and was a pretty decent size and the response we got was incredible. TE: Arctic Monkeys are definitely our biggest influence. Other influences include Muse, The Vaccines, The Beatles and Foo Fighters. TE: Fast. Riffs. Catchy. TE: That's a tough one, not alot of our songs are really relevant to us! Although, we would probably have to go for the first track off of our EP called Deluded. Don't be fooled by the title though, we chose this one as it sums up our general songwriting, it's got a catchy riff and some half decent lyrics (well, we can let you decide that one!) but overall it gives you a good impression of what we sound like. TE: Indie rock. TE: There's alot of great Scottish bands. Although we do feel that the unsigned bands in Scotland really carry alot of talent. There are so many bands in Scotland, all with their own unique style of playing, but we really enjoy listening to some unsigned acts. The effort some of these bands must put in is insane. TE: Dead Sea Souls are a favourite of ours. They're an extremely popular band in Scotland and are signed to Big Rock Candy Records. Having supported and seen them a few times in west lothian has been great for us. Highly recommend their album 'We Were Always Electric' FEB 2013 - issue (25)

RI: Back in 2003 I was at a party with a friend and we were chatting about the music that I was working on. I said I was struggling to come up with a name to which she replied with no hesitation ‘you should call your band Ramage INC.’ Thus Ramage INC was born. RI: Ramage INC. has seen many lineup changes since the beginning in 2003. It is a project that has been on and off depending on my creative focus. I have always been in other bands that have kept me busy and taken priority due to popularity. So in my free time I viewed Ramage INC as a way to let out my unhindered creative energy. In summer of 2012 I decided to get a band together to take to the stage the new material I am working on. This is now my main focus! RI: The members of Ramage INC are all very dedicated people who work hard to make this music take shape. I am very fortunate to be working with such amazing people. Our Drummer Hammy has been one of my best friends since High school. He is a phenomenal drummer whom I have worked and toured with in various other projects in the past. When it came to looking for someone to play on the new album it made perfect sense to ask him. Our Guitarist Hef I have also worked with and toured with in other musical projects and we have been good friends for years now. He was the Guitarist in the previous line up of Ramage INC and has always been interested in playing guitar for this music. Our Bassist Marcin is our newest member. We met through working in the sound engineering business to which we struck up a good friendship. He had heard Ramage INC’s music and was very keen to become part of the band. Me (Ramage). I play guitar and sing in the band. RI: One of the most memorable gigs for me was opening at the Edinburgh meadows festival. As soon as I hit my first chord they released lots of white doves, very metal! RI: The biggest musical influences would have to be The Devin Townsend project. Vast. Deftones. Soundgarden. Queens of the stone age. NIN. RI: Ambient, melodic, metal RI: Each song has a different element to it so it is hard to sum up the band in just one song. But if I had to represent the band with just one track just now I would have to say ‘Feel the waves’ which shall be on our new album set to be released in march. RI: Ambient melodic metal ! RI: There are many talented musical artists in Scotland. But to achieve local recognition within the loud music genre in Scotland seems to be an uphill struggle for a lot of bands. GG: Who are the major influences for the band? GG: What song of yours best sums up the band?
LEWIS: Not really heartwarming or uplifting, more that we stole it from a Foo Fighters song called, funnily enough... ‘Resolve’ ADAM: Well we were really struggling for names and one of our favourite bands is the foo fighters, I came back from Milton Keynes after being backstage meeting Dave Grohl and co, and thought it would be cool to name the band after their song ’Resolve’ LEWIS: We’ve been a band for a bout a year and a half. Only really started to write songs after about a year of being a band. LEWIS: Darren Farqhuar - Drums, Ethan ”Specky” Kilpatrick - Bass, Adam Warrington - Lead Guitar, Lewis Capaldi - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar. Adam and Lewis did acoustic gigs for about half a year, we knew Darren from school and met Ethan through an Ex band member. LEWIS: Depends, for size and sound it would probably be Barrowlands 2. But in terms of how we played and the reaction from the crowd it would probably be Smith’s in Bathgate, place was pack, was mental. ADAM: Our best place we have played would probably be ’The Harvester’ in knightridge because thats where we first played our own material and the crowd loved it LEWIS: Probably, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, The View and more stuff along those lines. ADAM: The Raconteurs, The Beatles, Oasis and The Kooks LEWIS: I don’t know what I would say best sums us up. But i’d say our best song is definitely ”Idle”.
GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be?
LEWIS: Indie/Rock ADAM: Rock
GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
LEWIS: I think it’s great. There’s loads of bands starting to get noticed and making a name for themselves like Bwani Junction etc. It’s amazing. ADAM: We dont think enough bands are being picked up around scotland
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?
LEWIS: Too many haha, people like, The Begbies, Dead Sea Souls, The Barrels, The Snuts and that, absolutely quality. ADAM: Bwani Junction, Japan Four

ompliments Of are are a five piece Alternative rock band from West Lothian. The band came together through working in other bands but decided to lick off their own band and try to create their own unique sound.
The guys all have a varied tastes in music and that shows through in their overall sound which flirts with metal, punk and goth if you ask me... ala Sisters of Mercy/Joy Division anyone? A very unique vocal helps lift Compliments Of slightly to the side from your typical metal/hardcore/heavy/punk bands out there. It really is hard to stick them fimly in any genre to be fair so job partially done guys, well done, really can’t wait to hear a proper recording.. www.facebook.com/pages/ComplimentsOf/227354550680100?fref=ts
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it?
CO: The band name came about near the beginning of the band, at practice one night. We all got together put in our idea’s of band names and voted for the best. And out popped Compliments Of!
GG: How long have you been a band?
CO: The band has been together for about 1 year and 4 months. And still going strong. CO: Jake Moffat - Lead Vocals, Craig Hunter - Lead Guitar, Iain MacIntyre - Rhythm Guitar, Cameron Smith - Bass Guitar & Michael Radcliffe Drums&Vocals. The line up to begin with orginally was different with a few members leaving the band a few months in. Jake, Cameron and Michael all know eachother from school. While Iain and Craig work together. CO: So far the best gig we have done has to be Dluxe Bar & Club, Livingston. Simply because the crowd was awesome. It was the biggest crowd we’ve played in front of, it was really busy. And even through all the equipment not working at times we still pulled of a great show! CO: The band have many influences. At the begining the band done many covers of bands which included Foo Fighters, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, 30 Seconds to Mars, A Day to Remember, Puddle of Mudd. However the band is a big fan of old school punk and the majority of the band is big fans of Blink 182. CO: Loud, Alternative, Original. CO: I don’t think there is one song that best sums up the band as we are all very different. We love playing our own stuff but the song we believe to be our best song is ’Here’s Looking at You Kid’. CO: I believe we are a different band, as a band we often stuggle to determine what genre we are. But I think we fall under the Alternative Rock cateroy. As that ranges from eveything, just like us!
GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet? GG: So far where has been the best place you have played LIVE? GG: Who are the major influences for the band?
GG: Describe your sound in three words? GG: What song of yours best sums up the band? GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be? GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?
CO: There is a lot of great upcoming bands in Scotland right now. We have played along side some big bands from Scotland. From JapanFour and The Barrels to heavy metal band Deadly Inscription. We think the passion of music in Scotland is brilliant and it’s great to see so many musicians in Scotland. CO: There are a few which we think are very talented. Like we said JapanFour, The Barrels and Deadly Inscription are extremley talented at what they do. But we have also heard great stuff from younger bands like Chaos Creek, Tomorrow’s History and Alan Smithee. But there is so many to choose from it’s very difficult! FEB 2013 - issue (25)

alvation Lies Within are a young 5 piece metalcore band from Scotland. Being a very new band they have only just started to play gigs and are hoping to hit the hit the metalcore music scene soon. I have first hand experiance of the genre that SLW are in and its a tough tough genre to be successful in as even the best of band suffer from lack of venues (a lot of places won’t book metal/hardcore bands so its way tougher for someone in that area to get as much recognition as it is for say an indie/pop/rock band who are in high demand at most venues. Checkout their track ‘The Bitter Taste Of The Truth’ on their Bandpage for some top top growling, chunder and bass drops. www.facebook.com/salvationlieswithinUK
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it?
SLW: Jack and Kurtis were watching the Shawshank Redemption and that’s a quote from it and we thought it’d make a pretty good band name.
GG: How long have you been a band?
SLW: We spent about a year looking for a bass player which we got fairly recently so I would say about a month or two.
GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?
SLW: Jack - guitar, Kurtis - vocals, Ross - guitar, Brendan - drums, Ben - bass. Jack, Brendan and Kurtis all went to school together, and Kurtis knew Ross for pretty much his whole life, and then we got Ben from an ad on Gumtree!
GG: So far where has been the best place you have played LIVE?
SLW: We have still to play our first gig. We have had about 3 that we were meant to play but they got cancelled or postponed due to them being changed to 18+ etc. Our first gig will be in early March!
GG: Who are the major influences for the band?
SLW: Bleed From Within, Chelsea Grin, Parkway Drive, Bullet For My Valentine, Lamb Of God
GG: Describe your sound in three words?
SLW: Medium to Very Heavy (count that as 3)
GG: What song of yours best sums up the band?
SLW: Our Last Request
GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be?
SLW: Metalcore
GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
SLW: It’s pretty good, but it seems to be dying down a bit recently with a few bands splitting up.
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?
SLW: As Autumn Falls (its a shame they split up though), Chaos Creek, Behind Hollow Walls

arhead are an unsigned Metal band from West Lothian who just started gigging at the beginnin g of the year.
The guys are influenced by you r big classic metal and heavy rock bands like Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer, Dream Theatre to nam e but a few so if this is the kind a stuff you like then this is whe re you wanna go. I’m not a ‘pure’ metal fan and the guys only have a sampler rehearsal video to get an idea of what they are all about but they sound wickedly metally enough for me to say that anyone into chunky metal and heavy hea vy rock would ‘lap this right up’ as they say. www.facebook.com/warheadr

WH: For a while Graeme and I (Greg) were going to call ourselves Mastema but later discovered there’s another band by that name who are pretty popular so we spent part of a jam session trying to think of others and several were mentioned but Warhead just felt right for our style of music, it just fit so we agreed on Warhead. WH: It’s been 6 months. We got together for our first jam at the Attic in Bathgate in July 2012. WH: There’s Greg Rankin (me) on Guitar and Vocals, Graeme Dodds on Bass guitar and backing vocals and on the drums is Jamie Purdie. Graeme and I were members of a band called Lethal Tender. When that band disbanded, we wanted to form a new band and looked around for a drummer. Jamie responded to our call and has been awesome and we haven’t looked back. WH: Only 1 gig under our belt at the moment, at The Dreadnought in Bathgate so we’ll need to go with that. But what a hell of a debut! Place was packed and some brutal pits on the go. Brilliant crowd! WH: Greg - Slayer, Megadeth, Rage Against The Machine, Trivium, Fightstar, Machine Head, Slipknot. Graeme - Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Slipknot, Stone Sour, The Sword, Queens of the Stone Age, Motorhead. Jamie - Trivium, Machine Head, Dream Theater, Lamb of God, Porcupine Tree. WH: I recently heard someone randomly refer to us as ’Angry funk metal’. That’s a new one, let’s go with that. WH: No Revolution. That one is about people who say they want to make a stand against something and do nothing about it. If you believe in something strong enough then make yourself heard. That’s what we do through our music. WH: Yeah, we try to vary our sound quite a bit but if I had to choose, it would be Metal. WH: A lot of really good bands out there at the moment. There’s so many gigs I did with Lethal Tender and discovered a hidden gem in one of the bands we were playing with. I’d say my personal favourite signed Scottish bands out there just now are Biffy Clyro, The Unwinding Hours and Alestorm WH: I was gutted that Dirty Rose have decided to call it a day. I really enjoyed them. There’s loads of great bands around but some of the best local acts are Operation Certain Death, Fortune of Sorrow, MAIR, The Black Lights, Mayfield Drive, Spider Eating Flesh Disease, Far Arden, Lost Nath and Martin’s Room. ichael Sharp is a singer songwriter from East Whitburn that sits firmly in the ‘I can play by myself acoustically or with a band’ category of musician which makes me a tad jealous, oh... did I say he’s cute and super cool as well? Just look at that photo over there. Michael lists Jim Morrison, Jeff Buckley and Paulo Nutini as some of his musical influences. Those are couple of pretty serious influences to live up to but Mr Sharp does it with ease and has a dreamy nonchalance about him as he treats you to tracks like ‘Alone’ and ‘Clear My Mind’ www.facebook.com/michaelsharpmusic
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it?
MS: Just my name... Thought about changing it for this but easy option.
GG: How long have you been a band?
MS: As a band about 2/3 years, however started gigging when I was 18. (Now 22). The guys that play with me are brought in for bigger gigs. For instance when I supported The Law few years back I had the full band.
GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?
MS: Myself (vocals/guitar). Kier McDowell (lead guitar), John-Luke Treadgold (drums) and Scott Dillon (bass). Kinda met through music, gigs etc. kier and I grew up together, Scott and him went to school. Scott played in another band, met through that same with JL..
GG: So far where has been the best place you have played LIVE?
MS: For me King Tuts.. However, had the best night in Camden doing an acoutic set. Great buzz and great atmosphere.
GG: Who are the major influences for the band?
MS: John Martyn, Alex Harvey, George Harrison, early John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Gil Scott Heron and Bobby Bland.
GG: Describe your sound in three words?
MS: Johnny Cash Ska
GG: What song of yours best sums up the band?
MS: Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be?
MS: Mellow folk.
GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
MS: A lot of up and coming bands and artists. Constantly growing. I like how its starting to become more diverse.
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?
MS: Couple of friends of mine, Katie Sutherland, Davey Horne and Michael Cassidy.

Having just started gigging aro und the end of 2012 the guy s have crammed in a lot of shows and have been in pretty high dem and so far. Glasgow charity festival ‘Savifes t’ has even brought them an appearence on the hallowed Glasgow Barrowlands stage so it’s pretty much a wee taste of thin gs to come for the guys hopefu lly, with their catchy tunes sure to capture the imagination of the popular and ready made ind ie/pop/rock audience who see m to be champing at the bit for a new Scottish band to throw the ir arms around. The Mowbrays could just be that band. www.facebook.com/TheMowb rays
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it?
TM: No amazing, heart warming or up lifting story I’m afraid. One night out, we were talking about band names etc. until Craig said ”well I stay in Mowbray Rise , how about The Mowbrays? ” . It just stuck from there.
GG: How long have you been a band?
TM: First official jam session with all of us was on the 1.9.12 . Since then we’ve been improving everyday, coming up with new ideas and loving every minute of it. TM: Craig Davidson - Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitar Callum Fortune - Lead Guitarist Liam Keeble - Bass John Prasher - Drums Liam and Callum have been best mates ever since they were kids. Craig got to know them through other friends. Callum had been playing guitar for years and always wanted to start a band. A house party one night , Craig sang and play guitar which then lead to the occasional jam session with Callum. Liam bought and learned bass from scratch. Liam in turn got John involved who he worked with and happened to be an unbelievable drummer. TM: The majestic stage that is The Barrowlands Ballroom , Main Stage. For the Savifest Charity gig on 2.11.12
GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?
GG: So far where has been the best place you have played LIVE? GG: Who are the major influences for the band?
TM: A couple bands who we constantly listen to are The Smiths, The Black keys, Eighties Matchbox b-line Disaster and various others. It’s hard to say because we don’t really sound like our influences , their songs inspire new ideas and techniques.
GG: Describe your sound in three words?
TM: Jumpy , Addictive , Contagious
GG: What song of yours best sums up the band? GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be?
TM: Straight Jacket Love. It’s upbeat, in your face , emotional and catchy.
GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
TM: The Scottish music scene is defintely on the up, so many talented bands out there at the moment. Great mix to represent Scotland.
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?
TM: We’ve played with Idkid a few times , we’ve known each other for quite a while. Always a great gig when we all get together, ELECTRIC. Also the same with The Changes , great bunch of guys and very talented.
TM: We’ve always had different opinions about what genre we are , but we played a gig in Edinburgh at WhistleBinkies and they had on their poster . The Mowbrays - Alternative Rock . We were all pretty happy with that.

right Side have arrived on the local music with a fresh look at the punk/ hardcore/metalcore scenes and what they have come up with is pretty cool from what i’ve heard. Containing member who have graced bands like As Autumn Falls and Behind Hollow Walls there is a mass of experience across the lineup. With influernces like Break Even, Touché Amoré, Comeback Kid, This Is Hell and Landscapes it’s something even i’m not that much aquanted with but yeh, basically a cross between punk and metal/screamo of some sort would be fine for me. Snippets of Gallows are thrown in there and a massive sound on their EP ‘Face The Unknown’ thanks to JM Recordings will no doubt helps the band quickly establish themselves as the tour de force for local hardcore’esque bands www.facebook.com/wearebrightsideuk
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it?
BS: Not really, it’s a pretty simple story really haha. The band name is influenced by collectively one of our favourite bands called Break Even and their last album before they split up called ’The Bright Side’. It’s one of the best albums we’ve ever heard and it’s definitely a sound we’re influenced by. GG: How long have you been a band? BS: Since about mid-Summer 2012. We had our first show in October that year and it’s just went from there! GG: Who are the members, what do BS: Ali - vocals, Ross - Guitar, Kev - Bass, Paul - Drums. Myself (Ross) and Paul play in they do in the band and how did you all another band called Behind Hollow Walls so that’s how we know each other anyway. meet? We met Kev and Ali through playing with their old bands as we were all pretty similar, became friends as we played shows together all the time and from that we decided that because we’re all into the same stuff we should start something up a bit different from our other bands. GG: So far where has been the best BS: Hard to say really as we’ve only played 4 shows so far so people are only starting place you have played LIVE? to see us! They shows have been good though. We played a weird pub in Edinburgh called The Jekyll & Hyde in December and that was a laugh. We played a Halloween show in Falkirk as well for our second show and that was a really good one actually. GG: Who are the major influences for BS: As a whole band we have our favourites like Break Even(obviously), Touché the band? Amoré, Comeback Kid, Landscapes, Pianos Become The Teeth etc. We prefer the more melodic side of things! GG: Describe your sound in three words? BS: Fast, Melodic, Cry-mosh. GG: What song of yours best sums up BS: We’ve only recorded three tracks so far but have a bunch more that we’ve the band? played live but are waiting to be recorded. I suppose out of the three though Weight Of The World is the one that sums us up well. It’s on our bandcamp right now if you want to check it out! www.brightsideuk.bandcamp GG: Every band hates being pigeon BS: Yeah you’re right haha, I guess Melodic Hardcore/Punk would be alright though! holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be? GG: What do you think of the Scottish BS: I think there is good bands out there but a lot of it is overshadowed in favour music scene just now? of what’s hyped or whoever has the best merch. It is good to see so much music coming out of Scotland right now but in terms of heavy music, it’s so saturated due to the amount of bands playing that certain style that nothing really sticks out until a REALLY good or interesting band comes along. dKid are a 4 strong 90s inspir ed Indie-Rock band from West Lothian with a penchant for ‘ long walks on the beach ’ but i’m taking that with a wee pinch of salt ;-)
Anyway... Their online presen ce is sparce but list among the ir influences The Beatles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wannadies, The Cribs and The Pixies. For me there is a big presence of early New Order in their sound somewh ere but maybe thats just me. Good to hear a different sound com ing through in the area though and Idkid certainly don’t sound like your typical indie pop rock ban d. ‘Snowelle’ is a track that defo leans more toward something that is pure pop rock (Stroke s etc) but tracks like ‘Nightm are Skies’ and ‘Beats Me’ certainl y show a much broader and less mainstream sound from the guys. www.facebook.com/IdKidband
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it? GG: How long have you been a band?
IDK: It’s based on Freud’s Psychological developmental stage theory of the Id, Ego and the Super-ego, the ID is the repressed selfish stage.
GG: Who are the major influences for the band?
IDK: IdKid as a project has been under way for just over a year, we spent a lot of time writing and recording which was essential in finding our sound. IDK: Johnny McLaren - Vocals/Guitar, Bobby McLaren - Vocals/Guitar, Dean Di Mola - Bass, Bruce Davidson - Drums. The band started off as two brothers just playing music which expanded due to the recording and constant practising of material. As a result we’d been playing together for years before IdKid even started. We eventually asked 2 extremely talented musicians/friends to join the fold turning our band into a 4 piece, we couldn’t have asked for better. IDK: We headlined Bannermans in Edinburgh in November and really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere and the energy of the venue, you don’t get much cooler than playing an underground vault in Edinburgh’s old town. Plus they sold Red Stripe which is our favourite beer. IDK: Bands like The Cribs, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Beatles, Weezer and Sonic Youth were big inspirations for our sound.
GG: Describe your sound in three words?
IDK: Raw, Alternative and Energetic
GG: What song of yours best sums up the band?
IDK: The song that best describes us would probably be ”Beats Me”. The lyrical content is kinda ambiguous and the music is an ode to 90’s indie rock grunge which we loved growing up. Really proud of it.
GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be?
IDK: 90’s inspired Indie Rock
GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
IDK: It’s definitely showing potential, it’s just a shame there isn’t much exposure for Scottish bands.
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?
IDK: Fire and I are a really exciting and inventive 2 piece. There’s also a new band called The Mowbrays who we’ve gigged with 3 times now. We’ll also be gigging with a band called The Phantoms in February which we’re excited about.
GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?

he jury are probably one of the the youngest and newest bands to feature in our 13 for ‘13 list but these 4 young guys have amazing potential and i’m sure they can get in there with all the other bands and mix things up a bit as they develop their sound and writing. Having only started gigging late on last year the guys have not had many live shows for you to have caught so a lot of people might not have had a chance to see them live. I’m pretty sure the band are still at the stage of doing mostly covers but when a young band can do a cover justice, be tight and still get across a wee bit of their own personality you know their own stuff will be pretty sweet. www.facebook.com/wearethejury

inally our last band are Tomorr ow’s History, an up and coming Ind ie/rock band from Livingston who ha ve been extremely busy boys in the loc al gig circuit for a few months and like Th e Jury, they are a bunch of young guys most do ing covers at the moment.
As soon as these young dudes kick off the ‘cover’ shakles and start doing theirown stuff i’m positive they will never go bac k. Like riding your bike with stab alisers, everyones done it but when you can do it yourself you never want them back on aga in, song writing is the same. It’s an absolute pleasure to watch these young bands grow and mature into fully writing and playing bands in their own right... so get on board and watch them grow yourself before you find yoursel f maybe sitting on the phone for 2 hours trying to get a ticket to see them... i DOES happen ..!!!! www.facebook.com/Tomorrow sHistory
GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heart warming or uplifting story behind it?
TH: Not really to be honest, we couldn’t think of a name so Kevin the bassist came up with ’Tomorrow’s History’. I suppose you could say its because we do a lot of stupid stuff but Tomorrow will be history one day so who cares! Haha
GG: How long have you been a band?
TH: Since August 2012
GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?
TH: There’s Connor on vocals, George Rythm guitar, Kevin the bass player, Kieran on Lead and Big Calum smashing the drums
GG: So far where has been the best place you have played LIVE?
TH: It’s got to be The Harvester in Knightsridge the crowd was bouncing as we were dishing out some great covers!
GG: Who are the major influences for the band?
TH: The View by far think the boys are class, although there are many others such as Artic Monkeys, The Vaccines, and basically anything we like the sound of haha.
GG: Describe your sound in three words?
TH: Words can’t describe
GG: What song of yours best sums up the band?
TH: Can’t think of one yet but hopefully there will be one soon that sums us up.
GG: Every band hates being pigeon holed... if you had to pick a genre for yourself what would it be?
TH: We want to be a bit of everything but I’d probably say Indie
GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now?
TH: It’s amazing!! Can’t beat a band with a Scottish accent, The View and Biffy Clyro’s new albums are fantastic
GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment?
TH: We have been give the chance to play with some great local band such as The Barrels, Japan four, The Begbies all great bands. Also our friends from Liverpool The Razz, top class upcoming band, one to watch this year.

MUSIC REVIEW
The
DELUDED EP
T
he Extracts are clearly an amazing group of musicians that show us here that they can write and play original material worthy of any of their contemporaries on the current UK indie scene. The track ‘Deluded’ kicks us off. Buzzsaw distorted bass and guitars shift the song along rather nicely if not a little tentatively at times. A good solid opener that lulls you into a sense of false security. ‘Second Best’ sees the band moving up a couple of gears, and – for me - is the stand out track on the EP with drums cracking the whip and the superb bass playing from Sam Carlyle worthy of John Paul Jones supporting a dirty guitar riff that is more Hawkwind than should be allowed in this day and age. A true gem of a song. Page 20
‘Flaw in the Plan’ continues Chuck McAulay’s percussive assault with a nifty riff and superb arrangement that shows the band’s song writing skills and instinct at their best. Harry Bircher’s vocals sound more relaxed here and his guitar playing is superb. The band can play, they can write, they obviously have a field of influences that they can harvest at any time, and I cannot wait for the next instalment. Great songs, great band. Another minor classic from Robin Young’s Live Rehearsals in Livingston, the EP is available as a free download on www.theextracts.bandcamp.com The Extracts: Sam Carlyle – Bass Chuck McAulay – Drums, Backing Vocals Harry Bircher – Guitars and Lead Vocals FEB 2013 - issue (25)

LIFE(STYLE) SHOW REVIEW
out but on arrival discovered that the room had been redone as a kinda banquet/miners welfare style and as we had turned up with only 10 mins until show time we ended up sitting at the very back of the room, more than likely a venue issue but had we known I'd have made sure we turned up a wee bit earlier to get a seat closer to the action. In the end it was only a small gripe but didn't really spoil the evening at all. As the lights dim and the curtain opens its a nice feeling to see George, suited and booted, in his element at last. We missed a previous nightclub show due to an unfortunate DIY disaster involving a rather expensive double glazed window. George is visibly a tad nervous at the very beginning and I'm notching this down to the size of the occasion and knowing how important a night it is, he soon settles down though and Is quickly into his hypno-groove. After some safety instructions and some background info on hypnosis and George himself it's finally down to the business of roping in a collection of victims... sorry, I mean 'willing volunteers'....to take part in tonight’s festivities.
D
ragging myself out of my sick bed on a cold December night is possibly not the brightest idea I have over had. So it's always good to have something a little special up your sleeve when it gets to these rare occasions. On this one I was heading off to the Regal Theatre to checkout young up and coming comedy hypnotist George Wood in his biggest show to date. Some readers will remember George from one of our previous issues where we had George over for a full blown video interview. During that wee chat we talked briefly about his ambitions to someday take his show on to the big stage. Well, it's only a short few months later and low and behold we are about to be treated to the young local entertainer first LIVE theatre stage show.
It's an interesting part of the show but with so many people on stage it does tend to take a wee bit of time to identify those most likely to go completely under and then to take those volunteers into the deeper state of relaxation needed, enough to get them to do what needed of them. Once things kick off it's dear that George really does enjoy what he is doing, he really does have a natural charm that draws people in to whatever he is doing. I'm going to try and not give away too many of the shows sketches as I'm guessing that much of it will be the same for a good period of time, basically until George has enough material that is both good and that he is confident enough of pulling off, this will then free him up to change the format of the shows on a regularly basis. So with that in mind just what does George get up to with his Victims, sorry volunteers...???
George has been pretty busy since we spoke and tonight's show is the icing on the cake of a rather whirlwind and spectacular year for him and his 'Transfixed' comedy hypnosis show. We booked our front row tickets as soon as they came Page 38

Well among others we have; a collection of banjo playing freaks, some dudes giving birth, water with strange affects on people, Voodoo dolls, a Brazilian Super Model, a fair amount of River Dancing, Rap Battles... oh and some uncontrollable orgasms to round things off... well it is an adult’ish show. Having only been doing shows for a short time there is obviously still some experimentation going on with George and the show and there are the odd teething problems now and again. On the whole though most of the sketches work really well and there are bundles of belly laugh moments as the volunteers are put themselves through all sorts of bizarre comedy sketches. If I had to pick any negative from what was a pretty awesome night it would be that some sketches go on just a tiny wee bit longer than they need to, and that's only me being a very over critical in the hope of helping George fast track himself to the big league. The show for most parts is an absolute riot and there wasn't really a minute that went by without the two of us laughing our heads off. When the show was complete it was good to see George coming out immediately after in order to meet and greet people and to have a chat with anyone who wanted to. All in all It was a really great night and when you know the back story of George himself and the fact that he has only been doing shows for such a short time you really do give him huge kudos in getting to where he is In what could be seen as just the 'blink of an eye'. After talking to Mr. Wood on the night and on occasions since the show I'm glad to hear that 2013 looks to be shaping up just as awesome as 2012 has been for him. There has been bundles of press interviews and even a BBC interview under his belt so far and we are only just into February. So the future looks truly bright for our young and super talented hypnotist friend who has more strings to his bow than he have mentioned here but I’m sure we will all hear about those in good time. taying motivated will help you stick to your task and the website includes some tips to help you stay focused on your goal.
Richard Wiseman, a professor of psychology at Hertfordshire University, has put together these tips to help boost your willpower and keep you motivated.
1. Make only one resolution. Choosing just one aspect of your health to improve will increase your chance of success. 2. Plan your resolution in advance. This will give you time to think about your goal and how to achieve it.
3. Don't repeat last year’s resolution. Or, if you do, at least pick a different technique to achieve it. 4. Keep the resolution specific and write it down. 5. LOVE AT FIRST SIG H
T
V
alentines Day popped up this week and new studies have shown that apparently we are a nation of 'hopeless romantics', due to the fact that many of us still believe in that wonderful dream of 'love at first sight'. As many as three quarters of those asked still believe In the possibility of falling in love with someone the moment we set eyes on them. As UK residents we are somehow less cynical about romance than some of our more European neighbours would have you imagine. Largely due to the findings that while most of us have never actually experienced 'love at first sight' - we are all still dreaming that it might just happen someday. Now maybe that's all down to the weather we have in the UK or maybe we've all just been watching way too many romantic 'chick flicks' way too many times bit figures seem to be telling us that as little as 30% of us have the belief that love at first
sight is just a myth? Surely not? Some other stats show that: Just 4% believe it takes years to fall in love. 9 out of 10 people from the UK admitted that they had never actually been in a situation where they have fallen for a person by just looking at them for the first time. Although the study does show that a huge number of us have experienced 'lust' at first sight which is something all together... (right... been there, done that, bought the t-shirt). The surrey showed that almost everyone had lusted over someone they just met, with, yes you guessed it.... men being the biggest culprits. (don't you just love them?)

“It’s fair to say we’ve been surprised by the overwhelmingly positive response to our survey. “It seems most of us still believe that it’s possible to fall for a stranger just by sight, even if the vast majority of us have never had the experience.” Full details of the survey can be checked @ www.TheLoveBuggy.com
TheLoveBuggy.com carried at the survey and a spokesman for them said “The concept of love at first sight has been around ever since Adam first copped eyes on Eve’s shiny apple. “But with everyone these days leading such hectic and busy lives we thought it would be interesting to find out if anyone out there still believed in it. k OK OK ... So in order to try to help me keep up to date with everything and make life a wee bit easier we took the plunge and purchased a Samsung Note 10.1 in all its white and silver glory.
weighty feel that is just about right for using. On the whole it is looks pretty amazing to me even if it does look the same as its little brother the TAB 2.
Not being a massive fan of Apple products, or rather some of their company attitude, ethos and pricing rather than their actual products, I was looking elsewhere for a suitable model. With that in mind my choices of tablets was limited to the other big players, namely Google Nexus, the Samsung TAB and Note series and maybe the Asus tabs.
I'm not going to go into this review from too much of a technical point of view but more from the viewpoint of a typical everyday user kind of thing. So there will be no reams of facts or figures on the inner workings of the device itself and more of the everyday stuff that people like you and me are potentially going to be doing with it.
The Asus range was quickly ruled out due to its hefty price tag but do seem to be extremely powerful machines. The Nexus range was next ruled out as there is no options to add additional storage to the unit Meaning there is a maximum 64GB available to hold everything. So with price and storage major factors for me the Samsung range seemed to offer the best Initial Impressions of the Samsung Note is that it is pretty big with its 10.1 screen, stereo speakers, SD slot, front and rear cameras and has a nice chunky and Page 48
So why use a tablet? Well I suppose everyone will have their own reasons for wanting / needing one but I’m guessing recently that most of them revolve around Social Networking.
To kick off 'Social Networking' is definitely going to be a massive part of what makes a tablet useful to an average user but there is also a huge amount of additional functions that modern tablets offer like music, movies, graphics and office administration among a host of other uses. The Samsung Note 10.1 has one really nice features that I’ll cover first and that is the inclusion of the S PEN tool that not only lets you do all the usual finger poking and swiping actions that we're used to but it also lets you do a really good "handwriting to text" method of entering

Manufacturer specifications: 1.4GHz Exynos Quad-Core Processor 10.1" WXGA(1280x800) LCD Camera: Main(Rear): 5 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with LED Flash Sub(Front): 1.9 Megapixel Camera Memory: 16/32/64GB User memory + 2GB (RAM)microSD (up to 64GB) Dimension: 262 x 180 x 8.9 mm Weight : 600g (3G), 597g (WiFi) Battery: Standard battery, Li-ion 7,000mAh Value-added Features: S Pen Experience (6.5mm S Pen, S Note, S Planner etc.); Multi Screen; Adobe Photoshop Touch; Pop up play; Smart Stay; Samsung TouchWiz; Video Wall; Samsung Apps; Samsung Hub; Readers Hub/Music Hub/Game Hub/ Video Hub; Polaris office text into your device. I'm actually writing this full review using the in built Samsung Software and it's really a pretty awesome tool...!!!! Keyboards are OK but there is nothing better than writing down exactly what you want to say... directly to your tablet screen... and then having it magically appear in front of you as formatted or unformatted text is something a little special. Social Networking, although probably being the biggest reason that most people will consider a tablet, doesn't really change that much on one as it relies mostly on how good or bad the Android App that you are using is. Facebook and Twitter both have Apps which although usable, don't do 100% of the things the Windows versions do so the tablet doesn't fully let you give up on your desktop/laptop if you use the Apps for anything more than a few of the core elements they have. For me there are certain things that I still need to visit the laptop to do. For most though it would be fine for daily use. The wee downside of the Apps is almost made up for by the ability to browse yours and your friends pictures in a much more enjoyable format on the massive 1280x800 screen. You obviously get much more screen space for reading posts etc. Although strangely there is no way to increase the font size for easier reading or reading
from a distance, It defaults to a pretty small font for me and there doesn't seem to be any way to change it from inside the App. All in all though l'm sure no one will be disappointed with how their social Apps work. If you are into gaming or intend on using the tablet for something else that needs a heavy weight processor you'll be glad to know that the Note has handled absolutely everything that I've managed to throw at it for the past month without the slightest whimper thanks to the powerful quad-core chip under the hood, coupled with its large 2GB of internal RAM. This is the memory used by the system to run your Apps etc. and not to be confused with your 'storage' RAM which is where all your installed programmes are put and where you store your user data (photos, videos, music etc.)... sorry I said I wasn't going to get all technical so back to the stuff that matters. Camera wise there is a main 5 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with an LED Flash for taking pictures/video and a smaller camera located just above the screen for video calling etc. I opted for the wifi only version of the Note due mainly

to price as it was going to be at least ÂŁ150 more expensive far a 4G version. Instead I opted to purchase a Mobile Wifi dongle from 02 (which was ÂŁ35 at the time) which I could then share across all my devices if I needed to as it just acts like a Wifi hotspot so my tablet, phone and laptop can all connect to it Which Is something to think about if you have more than one device that you might need internet access on at the same time. It potentially lets you run a Smartphone with a smaller data tariff as you world always connect through your own hotspot dongle. Multiple windows can be opened at the some time on the Note just like on a proper Windows machine... well not quite exactly the same. You can open any Apps that support the feature and then click the button in the top right corner of the screen to change it to a windowed version which you can move around and shrink or stretch to your hearts content. Click the window button again and it returns to its full screen version again. Like your Smartphone your tablet turns into a full blown MP3 music player with the simple install of a decent player App. The benefit of the stereo speakers on the Note means it is easily capable of being used as a stand alone player but connecting to a decent set of speakers is obviously the ideal choice. The supplied 'bud' Page 50
FEB 2013 - issue (25)
headphones are also pretty good and are well usable for private listening. Something that I was really impressed with was just how good the Note was at handling video playback, even on 1080p files streamed across wifi so I'm guessing It would not struggle with files copied to the local storage. At this point its worth mentioning that the ability for it to do this video streaming (and Audio/photo) across my wifi is something I wasn't expecting to be able to do so it was a really a massive bonus for me, and to find that I could do it without any conversion to any other format like you usually need to do was amazing and is actually worth a lot of the cost of the device on its own. Even as a stand alone 10" portable media player it's kinda something special. I would recommend you install a good video player like 'MX Player' to get the best from your videos. The device will apparently last all day on a single charge but that is purely dependant on the Apps that you have installed, the brightness you have the screen set to and of course the things you do with it throughout the day. I have definitely had mine last all day so It is defo possible.

Well, we've covered a lot of the core elements or hardware specific tools that the Note brings to the table but we know that being an Android device, and we know that everyone and their dog has an android app for you to download so there is bound to be a lot more to this story so what else can my tablet do for me? Well...
SAT NAV Utilising the standard GPS hardware fitted in the note, a suitable car mount and the pre installed Maps software, or even better, a good Navigation package and you have the BEST sat nav money can buy.
SKY TV Install the latest SKY+ App and can have full control ALL of your Sky+ HD boxes connected to the same wifi network, including full access to your plannar and Remote Record functions.
REMOTE’ABILITY Get yourself a good remote control App like TeamViewer and you can control any PC you like from your device. Other remote Apps let you control your PC media centre and other specific software you might have installed.
Page 52

SHOPPING Online shopping for EVERYTHING, including groceries etc. now becomes really enjoyable with companies like Tesco, Amazon, eBay embracing mobile technology hugely and the embedded barcode scanner and running shopping lists in the Tesco App really make it super useful.
READING One of the first installed Apps for most will be the Kindle App which turns your tablet into a fully functioning E-Book Reader. But there are others out there + a host of news and magazine readers are truly perfect for the Notes big screen and turn your tablet into a really workable alternative to magazines and newspapers like they have been for books for a few years now.
E-MAIL For keeping in touch there are tons of email Apps for all the popular online email providers like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail etc. You can also connect to any POP3 mailboxes you have so can get access to all your email accounts on the one device and in a much more accessible and usable format than that of a Smartphone which to me always feels like your just txt messaging to me.
WATCHING TV BBC iPlayer, STV Player, 40d and even SkyGo all come to life on the Note and art a real solution to catching up with any TV programmes that you might have missed.
FEB 2013 - issue (25)
PAGE 53
LIFE(STYLE) TECH
SHARING Dropbox and Google Drive are just a couple of App that allows you to access a 'Cloud' type online storage area which you can access from a device so you can always have access to any files you need to.
CONTROL Another really nice thing on the Note is the inclusion of an IR Remote which allows you to control a host of IR devices from the included Smart Remote. So without leaving the comfort of your Facebook session you can flip to the Remote App and turn the TV up or down, change channel etc. Play your DVD or anything else that you world normally have a remote for... and YES even your SKY+HD boxes.
PRO PHOTO DSLR remote and viewing screen - now I don’t have a DSLR but I’ve read a whole lot about them being the ‘future’ for shooting not on super quality pics but also super Hi Def video as well. Problem with shooting video is the small viewing screen on cameras and hence most people shooting for a living have a separate viewing screen/monitor. So far you have needed to invest in a 10” flat screen monitor - but wait..!!!! Step up your trust android tablet and away you go. Not only can they act as your HD viewing screen but they can actually remotely control many aspects of your camera.
Page 54

VIDEO PLAYER I was amazed at how the tablet handled streaming even 1080p video files from my laptop and pc connected to the same wifi network. With a good video player installed its a breeze. You can even find proper media players/managers that will do all the cover/info management. So you can now store all your movies on a machine on your network and safely be assured that if you want to watch a movie anywhere in the house you can. And the ability to just pick it up and take it with you around the house is not to be underestimated.
MUSIC One of the more obvious uses is as a music player and there are some cracking music players around so I’m sure you will find one that suits you. Media player software will download all the info and covers for all your music so no need to browse through lists of text to find your fav artist/album/track. Although the Note 10.1 has pretty good stereo speakers I would connect a good set of speakers to the headphone jack or even better use a docking station with good speakers built in and throw away all those CD’s etc.
SOCIAL STUFF Social Networking and mobile devices go hand in hand and doing it on a tablet is defo the way forward. Viewing pics, videos and keeping up with reading posts are all a million times more user friendly on a tablet and will only get better as the various packages are developed for the bigger desktop space that a tablet brings. It’s also worth exploring the non platform specific Apps or merging Apps for the various social sites out there rather than just sticking to the official Apps.
Right... I’m going to stop now but believe me we have only scratched the surface of what you can do on your tablet and trust me it really does breathe new life into some Apps that were pretty unusable on a smaller screen... and we haven’t even started on the Games, Office or Graphics side of things... Gees... No Stop, or this review will never end. For more info on the tablet checkout Samsung’s on website using the link here - Samsung Note 10.1 FEB 2013 - issue (25)

ky 'Go' was launched in 2011 when Sky Player and Sky Mobile TV merged into one service. It is a free service from Sky that allows customers to watch programmes on their Computers, Laptops, Tablets and Smartphones etc. using an internet connection. You are limited to only having a maximum of 2 devices attached to your Sky account at any one time. I struggled with this as it meant I could'nt have both my phone and Page 56

laptop connected without using all the available slots up and leaving none for anyone else in my family to use. When it was first launched there was no 'cap' on devices and when the cup was eventually rolled out it caused quite a stir among users of the service. Now it seems that Sky have listened to their subscribers and have at least came up with a small compromise in the shape of Sky 'Go Extra'. 'Go Extra' is a top up that you can now add to your Sky package for ÂŁ5 a month that adds a further 2 devices to your account giving you a total of 4 devices that you can have active at one time. A nice feature FEB 2013 - issue (25)
also added is the ability to now download content to your device for viewing when offline, content downloaded is kept on the device for up to 30 days before being auto deleted. Much in the same way that the full software version of BBC iPlayer was set up to do. Your ÂŁ5 extra subscription lets you access and download blockbuster films from Sky Movies and content from lots of other channels such as Sky1 and Sky Atlantic. Sky 'Go' currently attracts more than 3m unique users each quarter, according to Sky and they feel the new service, which offers even greater flexibility, will be perfect for people wanting to watch content on their device even when without an internet connection, such as on a train or flight.

t is hard to describe World of Goo as it is pretty different to other games out there that I have played. Sure its a puzzle game but it's a wee bit different in that each level doesn't only get more difficult but thing actually change completely and on some levels I actually

struggled to know exactly what I was supposed to be doing? The game is basically a physicsbased puzzle game that has been developed by 2D Boy. 2D Boy are an independent game developer made up of former Electronic Arts employees Kyle Gabler and Ron Carmel. The game was released for A number of platforms including Windows,iOS and Android. It has gone on to win several gaming

awards since its release. The game looks simply beautiful and with such a stunning backdrop it puts a little pressure on the gameplay and the game engine itself to live up to and, if it can, to better it. There is no need to worry as the game pulls off both in spades. The physics engine creates something for you to play with that you actually feel Is real and that acts in a way that you think it would in real life. The game Is quick and easy to get in to but rapidly begins to get more
World of Goo ÂŁ2.99 difficult with levels, stages and outcomes changing at a rapid speed keeping you well and truly on your goo toes. It isn't a long game but it will take you a few long hours to get to grips with it and to complete the various tasks pit in front you. It's all about the Goo and levels revolve around getting the stuff to where it need to go in order to complete the levels. You do this by creating structures like towers, bridges or other combinations to reach escape Goo pipes. To create these structures you will need to use various tools and helpers along the way to achieve these goals, some will help your sections float, stick or
some other weird effect. You can also get rewarded depending on how quickly you complete each of the sections so sometimes you just need to go for it hell for leather. I'm guessing that as a result of the game being released on some of the bigger consoles it suffers a little from needing a pretty large screen size to enjoy it at its best so ideal for a tablet or one of the smartphones with a pretty big screen.

ew Star Soccer is perhaps my 'bestest' game on my tablet. It's super simple to get into and is easy to put down and pick up for wee 10 min breaks day now and again but can also keep you glued to your screen right through the movie your supposed to be watching with your partner. Graphically the game is simple bit effective and leans more towards the lighthearted than to one of the more serious management games out there, although 'management' is perhaps a wee bit of a stretch of the imagination. There are 2 main game modes Arcade and Career Arcade Mode basically has you play the 'action' part of the game against the computer with increasing levels of difficulty, all you need to do is keep scoring. In Career Mode the main aim of the game is for you to take control of a semi-pro footballer and try to get as far in the game as you can. Kicking off the game you first choose your name, country and team to play for. After that you take control of your Page 60

pro career and training with the goal of becoming as successful as you can. Your success is basically measured in terms of your happiness and by how many material possessions you have acquired (strangely enough) In order to sign with a better club and earn more money to improve your lifestyle and be happier you need to be better at football. To be better at football you need to improve your playing skills. You do this by training though the 5 key elements of Pace, Power, Technique, Vision and Free Kicks. Each one has various task for you to complete which improves your overall abilities on the park. Training in each task, like playing in games and doing various random tasks requested by your Boss, Team, Girlfriend, Fans or Sponsors, drains your energy which you need to replenish using various energy drinks. Energy drinks also have the ability to boost not only energy but Skills and Happiness as well if you're prepared to pay a little extra. Having the best BOOTS you can afford will also give you an edge with up to +40 points added on to your Pace, Power and Technique. Boots only last a Fixed amount of games so need to be purchased throughout the game. Life is measured by your level of success with your Boss, Team, Fans, Girlfriend and Sponsors along with your Lifestyle rating based on how much 'stuff' you have, As you progress through the seasons you will hopefully be the target of 'Transfer' attempts. Transfers can happen twice a year and you need to negotiate the best deal you can wits the teams who are interested in you. Eventually you will get good enough that you can choose to play for any team worldwide. Overall the game is one of those that you can play while watching TV and that doesn't need your 100% attention throughout. There are no occasions where you will fail on anything because you left the game running while you chat to someone or go off to make a cup of coffee. As I said before though the need to complete a season to find out where you finish or what team you can transfer to might just keep you at it a wee bit longer than you expect in the same way that Football Manager does on the PC.... now what time is it? Maybe time for one or two more matches before l need to hit the sack...!!! (There goes another 3 hours...)

TESCO MOBILE APP
W
orking full time I have on a good few occasion relied heavily on the Tesco delivery service for our weekly 'big shop', ordering though the Tesco website and choosing a delivery date that suited us. I was therefore happy to see that they had embraced the mobile app route and or a pretty sweet app that not only lets you run through the same ordering/delivery process but also a whole lot more.
and Pending Orders.
On opening the app you are presented with a nice looking Home Page with all of the various options open to you. At the top of the app there is a showcase tab where featured items from the Tesco recipes part of the app are shown.
• Favourites: This will let you see a list of items which you purchase regularly letting you quickly add stuff you buy all the time
The other options are: Store Locator, Add Your Clubcard, Groceries, Real Food, Tesco Direct, Clubcard and a help section. Store Locator: does just what it says and finds your nearest store, I guess based on your device says you are. It not only tells you the store name but gives you all the useful info you need like address, phone no, opening hours, facilities at the store and what type of goods they stock. Add Your Clubcard: Lets you add your current clubcard to the app or to sign up for a clubcard if you don't already have one. Groceries: Once you have entered your email details you open up the groceries shopping menu where your options are: Book a Slot, Scan, Favourites, Shop, Basket Page 62
• Book a Slot: Let's you choose between a Home Delivery or Click and Collect. You can then choose a time and date for your delivery or pickup. • Scan: Gives you a nice built in barcode scanner so you can easily add items to your shopping basket by just scanning the products barcode. The app then searches for the product and brings it's details up so you can see it's various options and prices etc. and choose a quantity. On my HTC Smartphone this part works really well but on my Samsung Note 10.1 it has a real problem with the camera and doesn't work. The camera works fine on all other apps on the Note so guessing that it's an app issue.
• Shop: This is where you add your items to your basket. It is made really easy with products split into their various section so you can quickly find what you are looking for. There is also the option of searching for products by name or by manually typing in or scanning a barcode. Products can also be added to your basket without choosing a delivery slot first, this lets you add items throughout the week as you run out of them instead of writing them on a piece of paper and sticking it on the fridge like I used to. • Basket: Just shows the items you currently have in your basket. • Pending Orders: Shows any orders you currently have outstanding. In use the app works pretty well, it zips through any of the options available. I particularly like the Favourite

section that lets you quickly add your regular groceries without trawling through the main store. As mentioned earlier my only real problem is with the scanning part of the app where it doesn't work on my tablet but seems to work fine on my smartphone. Sure, it is only a small part of the app but to me it is unfortunately one of the most useful so if i didn't have my phone it would be big miss and would effect my ratings of the app severely. Ratings wise it would have been a 5* app had it worked on both devices, but the wee issue kicks it down to a 4* for me but I'll keep you up to date incase an update solves the issue at some point. Sky+ App NEW upgrade for Android
W
e reviewed the Sky+ app a few months ago but the latest upgrade has added a host of new features that we feel that it's only fair that we have another wee peek at what the new app brings. The original app allowed you two main functions: Browsing a weeks TV programmes and giving you access to the excellent Remote Record function. Since then Sky has made a number of changes to their network and what is available to us, one of the main ones being that you can now connect your sky HD boxes to ANY broadband connection to access their ON DEMAND service. this service was initially reserved for only customers with Sky's broadband. It now seems that the new version of the Sky+ Android apptakes full advantage of that by basically letting you connect to your HD box through your home network from any Android device. The new app still contains the Browse and Remote Record functions and these are still available to use if you don't have your box connected to your network but connecting your box to your broadband rooter and installing the new app adds some key features that take the app seriously into another league altogether and truly make it an indispensable tool. New feature one is the ability to access your box completely, now you can see from your device exactly what is in your planner: what you have recorded, what is currently recording, what is yet to record and any of your series links. These are all completely available for Page 64

you to interact with and you can play and delete recordings or even charge any series links you have saved. The app with detect and connect with all the HD boxes that you have connected to your router so If you have a multi room package you will need to check the serial number of the box you are looking to access and choose that box. You can change boxes from within the app so its no real worry if you pick the wrong one just pop in to the settings menu and then the Sky+HD Box option and this will show you all your connected boxes. Once your box is selected you now have the main page options for: TV Guide, Planner, Highlights, Search, Settings and Help' TV Guide: As in the previous version lets you browse through a weeks worth of viewing across any of the sky channel. This can be done in two ways by choosing either Grid View or Magazine View. Highlights: Again as in the previous this is a portal for Sky to push out some of their content. Features chosen links and info to various Sky programmes. Planner: Is the first of the new features and opens up access to
the planner of your paired Sky+HD box. Hitting the planner button immediately bring up the details of 'most' of your program info stored on your box. The default display is split into 2 sections: Last 7 days and Future Recordings and Reminders. Last 7 Days: Shows you all your recorded programs for the week. Future Recordings and Reminders: Shows you all your up and coming recordings or reminders. Not only can you see what your box is doing without interrupting your viewing but you can start recordings playing from here also. Playing a recording will automatically kick you into the new Remote which we will get into next. You can also delete recordings, reminders or series links etc. from within this part of the app.' Search: Is the thing i probably used most in the old app and basically saves you manually scrolling though the clumsy 'on screen' menus using the days and time method and your remote. Settings: Here we can access a whole heap of things for you to change with regards to not only the app itself but also lets you access and change key bits of your Sky FEB 2013 - issue (25)
account which is pretty handy. Remote Control: This is another part of the app which brings it from being perhaps a handy wee tool to an absolute MUST HAVE. Obviously it gives you access all the typical functions of the remote with Play, Stop, Fast forward, Rewind, Pause, Channel Up/Down. All in all Sky seem to be on a wee bit of a roll at the moment with regards to their services and it looks like they might be starting to use the same values that made them so successful in the TV market with their other services. Having introduced a stable high speed Fibre broadband last year, opened their HD boxes up to use any broadband system, introduced a FREE On Demand service, made changes to their 'Sky Go' service to allow more devices and the ability to download content to your device. It is clear that they have a goal to offer as many really good products available as they can with the aim of keeping and growing their core subscriber base. Sure it can be expensive but they do offer a stunningly good product for that money despite their lack of real support for Scottish Football...!!!

appy new year from the guys at T.O.D Coaching, hope everyone had a good Christmas and not to depressed to be back into the normal swing of things. As its the beginning of a new year and a lot of peoples new year resolution will be to get into shape. For a lot of people this is a challenging task, some will want to join Page 70
the gym and some might want to get a personal trainer. Well I am here to help, I will let give you some helpful tips on what to look for when searching for either a gym or personal trainer.
Let’s start with a gym, joining a gym is a major decision and you need to think about it before signing up. FEB 2013 - issue (25)
GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS Firstly think about why you’re looking to join a gym.
• Is it for weight loss? • To tone up? • Have you got a health condition? • Simply to get a more active lifestyle QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS Look for a gym that offers the most classes and equipment that suit your needs. For example if you are looking to build some muscle to your frame a gym without free weights won’t be the best choice for you to take.
www.kozzi.com by Kozzi Inc.
Take a tour of the facility and see if there membership price reflex there equipment for example do they have a sauna and steam room? Take all this into consideration before signing up. Questions you may want to ask...
CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES How Do Classes Work? • Are classes included in your membership price? • Do you have to pay an additional fee for them once you join? • Does the gym offer one free class so you can find out if it's right for you? • Does the gym keep the classes to a maintainable level?
CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN Is it Clean? While there are no health codes specific to gyms, you'll want to check out the facilities for cleanliness. Take a look at the kit. Is there dust on, below or around the exercise machine? This is a sign of poor maintenance. Check out the lockers, showers, and changing areas to make sure they look maintained. Such as no missing keys, lockers secure and the showers are clean. Check if the facilities provide soap and other cleaning products. If you do join, protect yourself and other gym members. Wipe down machines with antibacterial wipes before you use them, and wear shower shoes in the locker room and shower.

TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES What are Peak Times? If you plan on using the facilities at approximately the same time each day, you may want to scope out the situation before you join. Is the car park packed at your desired gym time? Is there a line to use the treadmills? Joining a gym won't do you any good if, every time you go, you can't use the machines you need.
RECOMMENDATIONS RECOMMENDATIONS RECOMMENDATIONS RECOMMENDATIONS Ask around!
by Valerie Everett @ Flickr
You may want to ask around. If you have looked round and everything seems to have ticked the boxes, it helps if you get some reviews on the gym. People may have been lured in but upon joining everything changes so asked around and make sure no-one has put complaints in about the gym you are considering joining.
SMALL PRINT SMALL PRINT SMALL PRINT SMALL PRINT SMALL PRINT SMALL PRINT Read the Small Print When you start looking around, you will find that you cannot use a gym's facilities without joining, and, therefore signing a membership contract. Most gym contracts are nonrefundable. While a few exceptions can allow you to cancel a gym membership contract say, you move more than 25 miles away or your doctor confirms that you cannot exercise due to an injury the contract is a contract. Your membership will have to be paid whether you're using the facility or not. You are better to look around and compare contracts, special offers, and limitations at different gyms in your area as they can vary greatly. Be sure to enquire about student, corporate, or senior discounts if you fall into one of those categories. Also ask your employer if you're eligible for any gym benefits. Be careful about signing a long-term contract. While doing this will probably get you a better rate, ask yourself if you are going to use it enough to warrant the full contract. Next, when you're presented with the contract, do not sign it on the spot. Resist high pressure sales techniques and stick to your guns, don't sign anything until you've had a chance to go home or another quiet location and review it with a fine tooth comb. Even better, have someone else read over it in case they spot something you don't.

This brings us on to finding a PERSONAL TRAINER, it’s not hard to find a personal trainer but finding the right one can be very difficult. Personal trainers either work in gyms, health centres or privately, visiting their clients at home or at their work place. As I said it’s not hard to find a personal trainer but knowing what to look for can be more of a challenge. Before you hire a personal trainer to help you reach your goals, make sure they pass the test before trying to push you to your limit.
So what should you look for in a personal trainer? Here are some tips to help you:
CERTIFICATION CERTIFICATION CERTIFICATION CERTIFICATION CERTIFICATION CERTIFICATION Certification Do not assume that because your personal trainer is working at a gym that they are certified. If you find that they are certified, that certification should come from a legit certification body. When you find a personal trainer that you might hire, visit the website of the certification body that they claim to belong to and check your trainer's certification. However, some personal trainers may also be certified, strength and conditioning coaches (CSCS) or exercise physiologists. by SeattleClouds.com @ Flickr
You also want to see the personal trainer is always keeping up to date with their certification and looking to better themselves. You want the personal trainer you are thinking of hiring to attend classes, seminars or complete workshops to gain more and more qualifications. Your personal trainer should also have an up to date first aid certificate, in case there are any medical issues that come up during a session.

Before a personal trainer puts you through your first workout, they should take your medical history and perform a fitness evaluation. A fitness evaluation may come in the form of a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PARQ), which will ensure that your personal trainer is aware of any conditions that may affect your performance. The fitness evaluation includes your fitness goals, your target heart rate, blood pressure, starting weight, and body composition. Don't forget to sign the informed consent form. If your personal trainer doesn’t take you through this stage you should ask why they haven’t.

Once you complete your PARQ your personal trainer will set up a program that incorporates your goals, but they should also address your needs. For example, if you sit at a desk all day, your chest is probably tight and your rhomboids are probably weak. As a result, postural issues and imbalances should be addressed and/or corrected. Men are the worst for neglecting their lower bodies and it becomes the personal trainer’s job to help them train all muscle groups. Every four to six weeks your personal trainer should make changes to your routine to avoid a plateau, helping you continue to make fitness gains.
BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET Prices
by Images_of_Money @ Flickr
If you are hiring a personal trainer that works for a gym, the gym will offer different personal training packages depending on how many sessions you buy. It’s usually cheaper to buy a block instead of single sessions. Upon joining most gyms, you may receive up to three free personal fitness training sessions. The price may range from £20 to £60 per session. This depends on the personal trainers level and experience. If you’re hiring a selfemployed personal trainer, expect to pay anywhere from £30 to £80, depending on the services provided. Some questions you may want to ask: Will they visit me at home? Are they bringing their own equipment? Are they offering sports massage after your sessions?

Before you hire a personal trainer, don't be afraid to get references. Talk to their previous or current clients to get a better understanding of how they work, handles cancellations and rescheduling and whether or not they have made progress while working with them. As well as this check if your personal trainer only trains a certain type of client. Are all their clients already in shape or do they have clients on a variety of fitness levels and are able to work with all of them?

PRESENTATION PRESENTATION PRESENTATION PRESENTATION PRESENTATION PRESENTATION A personal trainer willing to give you a session or give advice on your form, shouldn't look like they need a personal trainer themselves. They should be in good physical shape. In the health and fitness industry, a personal trainer's appearance is definitely part of their marketing. Your personal trainer should be clean shaven and in appropriate clothing, to make them look professional. If you've been a member of a gym you may have noticed some of the personal trainers working out between clients. Your personal trainer should be able demonstrate the exercises they're asking you to do with perfect form. It is important that before you shell out money and put your trust and, in some instances, your health in the hands of a personal trainer, make sure they are fully prepared, trained and professional.

REBOOT & RE Total Recall
21 Jump Street
REVIEW
T
otal Recall, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Amazing Spider-Man are just a few of the new blockbusters that have hit the Cinema screens in the past two years, but what do they have in common? They are the remakes and reboots of already established films/franchises. After seeing a boom of sequels and franchises in the 80s, is it a surprise that twenty-five years down the line we are seeing something very similar? On the one hand, since the creation of the Harry Potters, we are seeing entire series of films emerging: Shrek (Four films, 2001 – 2010) Pirates of the Caribbean (Four films, 2003 – 2011) The Twilight Saga (Five films, 2008 – 2012) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001 – 2003) Ice Age (Four films, 2002 – 2012) Batman (Seven films, 1989 – 2012) It seems that the film companies are just desperate to keep the money rolling in. Marvel’s The Avengers is a classic example. Disney made $207.4 million in the opening weekend alone and so what has happened as an aftermath? The production of a sequel. Admittedly, I have only heard good things about Marvel’s The Avengers but Disney have now got to step up and Page 86
produce a film of the same quality and if they don’t (which is common with sequels) then they’re going to have to make it up to some disappointed fans. Films have a limited amount of success and common sense would dictate that sequels of the same films would eventually get boring, but for some reason the general public seems to disagree with this and thus support the ridiculous number of sequels being produced from incredibly popular films. On the other hand, directors are either rebooting films by re-launching the entire series or simply remaking the old classics: Total Recall (Original 1990, remake 2012) The Amazing Spider-Man (Original 2002-2007 series, remake 2012) 21 Jump Street (Original TV show 1987, remake 2012) Dark Shadows (Original TV show 1966, remake 2012) Mirror Mirror (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Disney 1937, remake 2012) Snow White and the Huntsman (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Disney 1937, remake 2012) And it doesn’t just stop there. Rumours and official announcements have announced the makings of: Dirty Dancing (Original 1987, remake due 2013) The Superman Franchise (Original 1978 – 2006, reboot due 2013) The Robocop Franchise (Original 1987 – 1993, reboot

EMAKE due 2013) Godzilla (Original 1998, remake due 2014) Logan’s Run (Original 1976, remake due 2014) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Original 1939, sequel released 1985, prequel due 2013) Why are we seeing so many sequels, remakes and reboots? Is the film industry running out of ideas? What happened to suddenly make them so afraid of experimenting with new ideas? There are hundreds of unique ideas out there, so why is it that the film industry can’t produce their own? How many times have you read a book and thought to yourself this would make an amazing film? Cinema has turned into a pure money making business. The film industry is reworking the successes because they know that they work. The big question is: are these remakes destroying the appreciation of original films? Do we really need them? It seems to me that the film industry is recoiling into a corner to maintain its dignity but what we really need are more Stephen Spielberg’s and Tim Burton’s to take a dangerous leap forwards and preserve our precious Cinema with new and inspiring ideas instead of persisting with more and more remakes, reboots and sequels. LIFE PI REVIEW

S
uraj Sharma (Pi Patel) had made such a stunning debut performance in Life of Pi. Although it’s not your regular action packed adventure it is still and adventure and one that will take your breath away. The story is elegantly told by the older Pi (Irrfan Khan – Slumdog Millionaire) and the effects are incredible. The story starts in a zoo in India and the natural beauty captured in such simplicity really sets the film up. Pi is no ordinary Indian child. He is curiously fascinated with life and religion. Pi’s family decide to move the zoo to Canada and in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the ship sinks. From then on we follow Pi in hi struggle for survival but along the way we encounter not only the horrors of being trapped with a Bengal Tiger but the unknown beauties the ocean has to offer. The running time of this film is just over two hours and at some moments it felt like forever but despite that, Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) has constructed a masterpiece. Every moment is delicately put together and a seemingly dull event is fraught with interest. I praise the writer, David Magee, for beautifully converting Yann Martel’s novel into such a joy to watch on the screen. I first read Life of Pi several years ago and found

it to be one of the most astounding books ever written. I was so excited to see the film, mostly because I wanted to see how it was done. Magee did not disappoint. He took the story and jumbled it up into an appetising plot which allows explanation and understanding to fall into place without boring the watcher. For those of you looking for a trigger happy action film then this is not for you but for those of you who want to witness a miraculous journey of a young boy then definitely give it a watch. I felt so captivated in the screen that I forgot where I was and felt like I was a part of Pi’s struggle. This is definitely one of a kind. I think Ang Lee may have earned himself a place next to Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg in the way that they artfully craft their films as art as well as entertainment. he Lord of the Rings grossed around $3 billion dollars 9 years ago when Peter Jackson released the trilogy and now it’s back!
After the release of The Return of the King in 2003, fans pestered Jackson to make The Hobbit to avoid the disappointment that the franchise had come to an end. The announcement of the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey brought excitement to the J.R.R Tolkien fan-base but Jackson promised not one film but two. As you can imagine, fans were thrilled. The first film was released on the 14th of December and was expected to make $137 million in the opening weekend alone. This five-year project certainly has expectations to live up to, but that’s not all. ‘Jackson’s decision to turn two films into three during the eleventh hour of production has caused an uproar’ and the concern is that the audience and loyal fans are going to be left with a forced storyline. Concerns have arisen simply because The Hobbit is one of

the shortest books written by Tolkien: ‘it tells a pretty snappy story, with a more upbeat, playful tone than The Lord of the Rings trilogy’. This hasn’t been the only drawback of the upcoming release but there seems to have been a lot of stress involved concerning the making of the movie. ‘With the Lord of the Rings prequel heading for cinema screens, Peter Jackson, the director, and his cast have been forced on the defensive by rows over animal welfare’. Articles written on the topic have outlined the accusations that have been thrust into the faces of the actors and Peter Jackson himself. Jackson claimed that ‘extraordinary measures were taken to make sure that animals were not used during action sequences or any other sequence that might create undue stress for the animals involved’ and yet despite this, the accusations have not ceased as stars, such as Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins) and Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), desperately try to restore goodwill. If this wasn’t enough stress for the film makers, Martin Freeman told our sources "I certainly don't think I'll ever do another film that's like, or as long, as this again" which suggests the amount of hard work that has been put into this production. For other actors, things weren’t so calm; ‘Sir Ian McKellen broke down in tears on the set of The Hobbit after becoming so frustrated’. He couldn’t take it anymore. After having to resort to acting with photographs of the thirteen dwarves with little lights to indicate who was speaking, Sir Ian McKellen just snapped. The whole studio heard him when he said ‘This is not why I became an actor.’. The question now stands as to whether the film will defy all the negativity and prove to be spectacular or whether it will give the fans a reason to grumble. With 16 days to go, the tension is running high and then we will finally know whether all the stress and aggravation was worth it or whether Air New Zealand’s £51 million marketing investment was wasted on a franchise that should have really been left alone. fter the release of ‘The Lord of the Rings Trilogy’, Peter Jackson was asked by fans to make The Hobbit but to their disappointment he said no. Nine years later here it is and what a success. From Page 100
a lifelong fan of the works of Tolkien, I was impressed at how accurate and detailed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey really was. The only problem with this amount of detail was that it slowed the film down considerably. FEB 2013 - issue (25)
The Hobbit has a running time of 2 hours and 49 minutes and the first hour is spent in the Shire. We meet the recognisable faces of Ian Holmes (The Day After Tomorrow) as the old Bilbo Baggins and Elijah Woods (Green Street) as Frodo and this is where the audience is given the time to disregard the story we already know in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and start again. We meet them as they prepare for
Bilbo’s birthday party and Bilbo tells the prelude to his adventure in The Hobbit. By this point I had just managed to get my head around the order in which everything was happening, and if that wasn’t bad enough, we’re taken back another sixty years and introduced to Martin Freeman (Sherlock) as the young Bilbo. I remember reading The Hobbit and
I also remember getting incredibly confused with all the characters. There are thirteen dwarves, a wizard and a hobbit that go on an adventure together and so I was intrigued to see how the writers (Fran Walsh, Phillapa Boyens, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro) were going to deal with this complication. I tip my hat to them; they dealt with it very well. We don’t receive an introduction to FEB 2013 - issue (25)
every character but we do receive an introduction to the important ones. Out of the thirteen, we interact with maybe three or four at the very most but with the comedic element of Gandalf counting them like a Dad with too many kids, we begin to recognise the names that are called out and the bonus is that they rhyme. There’s no way of forgetting Fili when you’ve remembered Kili. PAGE 101

Richard Armitage (Robin Hood) plays the character Thorin Oakenshield who is the most important of the dwarves and he is one of the most impressive of the actors, although when he shouts his orders at someone I do half expect Guy of Gisborne to come forward but that’s mostly down to the sound of his voice than anything else. Another well recognised actor within the brood of dwarves is James Nesbitt (Jekyll). I heard his voice and immediately recognised it but it wasn’t until half way through the film that I could place it. Now this isn’t because of his acting, this was due to the fantastic costume and make-up. I was going to mention the make-up specialists but seeming
Page 102
as though there are fifty of them, I don’t want to bore you but you would be amazed at the number of prosthetic technicians that were involved. The costumes however were designed by Bob Buck (Tracker), Ann Maskrey* and Richard Taylor**. Normally I wouldn’t mention them but for the wonderful job that they have done in this film, I think they deserve it. So maybe this isn’t the best that Peter Jackson could have produced and maybe his executive decision to create three films instead of two could be damaging but at the end of the day he has created something no one else has and he’s done it in such a way as to support The Lord of

the Rings Trilogy. I enjoyed this film. I thought it was well written and provided plenty of entertainment, maybe a bit long-winded but what Peter Jackson film isn’t? And if we look at The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, I always thought the first one was the slowest and dullest so maybe greater things are to come from this new trilogy. Fingers crossed, I want to put it on the shelf next to my The Lord of the Rings Trilogy boxset and have a complete collection. Natasha Orme for GoGuide Magazine Movie & DVD Reviewer

his film was definitely not what I was expecting and I’m not too sure if I clicked with it but I’ll give you the run down and let you decide for yourself. After Colin Farrell’s rise to fame from Total Recall (2012) I was looking forward to seeing him in what seemed to be a comedy. However, I’m not too sure Martin McDonagh realised how tough that would really be. Having worked with Farrell before with ‘In Bruges’ he could play to the actor’s strengths and to a certain extent he certainly did. Marty (Farrell) is a drunken Irishman, struggling to write a screenplay and finds himself being dragged into a war with a Gangster Boss after his best friend Billy (Sam Rockwell – The Green Mile) steals a beloved Shih Tzu. Looking at it like that, the plot Page 106
certainly sounds interesting, but rather than keeping it simple McDonagh combines several storylines, resulting in quite a lot of confusion from my end. As we follow the chaos that results from Billy stealing the Shih Tzu, we are introduced to quite a lot of ironic humour. The ‘seven psychopaths’ are the characters in the screenplay being written by Marty and yet the characters in the screenplay reflect the characters Marty meets on his journey. Some of the comments aimed towards the screenplay end up becoming true and thus putting a nice spin on the interlinking storylines.
I wouldn’t condemn this film as rubbish. I think it’s cleverly been put together and certainly contains a unique idea for a film. There are some parts that could be improved on; such as the slowness of the first hour. I kept finding myself getting distracted and checking the clock and after the first forty minutes I couldn’t believe how little of it I’d watched. The pace did pick up though and all the seemingly unrelated sections did link up quite well. I think I would definitely have to watch it again simply to pay closer attention to it now that I know what I’m getting myself into. I feel that there are a lot of hidden meanings and metaphors in relation to the characters and the occurrences that take place and for that I’m going to be generous and award this film three stars.
The one thing I didn’t like about the film was the number of deaths. Understandable the film is about a bunch of psychopaths but it felt like there wasn’t going to be anyone left standing at the end of it, or maybe Natasha Orme for GoGuide Magazine that’s my girlish side coming out. Movie & DVD Reviewer I must admit I did find some of it quite sad. FEB 2013 - issue (25)

'm not a good flyer, when l need to fly I can do it without any issues, for work etc. but If I can avoid it I will. So therefore movies dealing with 'plane' issues are not really my viewing of choice. New movie 'Flight' deals with a catastrophic failure onboard a plane in which the pilot makes a miraculous recovery from a 30,000 ft dive in order to manually steer the plane away from a densely populated area and land the plane in an empty field saving all the passengers and crew on board apart from 4 and countless others on the ground. The story of a hero, a true American hero.... ? Well, not quite. The actual story of the movie is Page 108
about how it turns at that the pilot who saved so many lives had actually been endangering lives very day due to the fact he was an alcoholic and drug addict who inherently flew just a wee bit higher than his planes were. The movie is directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars Denzel Washington as troubled pilot Whip Whitaker, who is introduced to us immediately in bed, beer in his hand, beautiful naked woman in tow. There are lines of cocaine at the ready as he takes a heated call from his ex-wife. Ok it's pretty dear that Whip has some personal issues but he seems to be way, way over the edge here.... how the hell can he still be flying planes? It’s something that we have seen in so many movies before with flawed people in positions of authority who go though some sort of trauma and come to love and forgive them in the end. I'm sorry but something might have went right over my head here FEB 2013 - issue (25)
because for the whole of this movie I'm pretty much rooting for the people on the side of 'Right' here. Thoughout i want him found out, punished, thrown in jail or for him to die in one of his drink and drug fueled episodes... i don't seem to be able to muster any real sympathy for this guy at all... yeh... even though he managed to save a whole lot of people by partially landing the plane safely. It annoyed me more than it should have that the movie, although pointing out from the stark that it was mechanical failure that caused the plane to break up in mid air, but that never really touches on whether his wreckless flying through a thunder storm at the start of the flight could maybe have had an effect on the plane. The copilot was continually pointing it out during the scene so I was presuming it would raise its ugly head and kill off Mr Whitaker escape route out of the whole mess bit it didn't. No doubt Washington’s likeability
has been put to good use by Zemeckis and I can see that it would be easy to like his high-functioning alcoholic creation that walks around flirting with the hostesses, joking with his passengers and attempting to appease his religion abused copilot (Brian Geraghty) in the hope he relaxes a wee bit to. Mid flight Whip proceeds to down a few mini vodkas from the drinks trolley and we realise that his colleagues are well aware of off what our Captain is all about. He even resorts to napping while autopilot takes care of the Mid flight workload. Then all hell breaks loose and Whip suddenly turns in to 'super pilot' as the plane falls rapidly out of the sky. Using all his skills as a pilot and running on coke-fuelled adrenalin he pulls of the daring moves needed to save the plane from ending up crashed among a heavily populated housing area. Zemeckis uses these scenes to their best to ramp up the tension with the crowning scene being when Whip flies the plane upside
FLIGHT down, chopping the top of a church spire, before hitting the ground and bursting into flames. Its a fine piece of tension building action, spoiled only by the trailer having detailing the action In advance. The plane crashing for me kind of symbolises the crashing of the movie as a whole.
For the next 2 hour or so all the entrant and tension fades and it is replaced by a semi predictable lumbering melodrama as the powers surrounding Whip engage in a process to turn all blame away from him and on to anyone else they can.... dead or alive. This truly should be a perfect platform for Washington to showcase his talents but for me Whip falls painfully flat. If he is supposed to be a fascinating character, then yes, I suppose there are times where you see small glimpses of Washington straying 'off script' perhaps as the John Gatins’ script does seem to leave a lot to be desired and most of the other FEB 2013 - issue (25)
characters that surround Whip seem to flutter by with no real guts or substance to them. John Goodman as the ponytailed drug dealing character in particular seems to have been plucked from another movie all together. For me Flight Is setup to be something it isn't. The trailer hasn't helped it much either and it perhaps starts where it should end because for me It's one long nosedive after those initial 10 minutes or so. Worth watching... Well, yeh go on, maybe my dislike of flying Is worse than I thought :-)

sually when I watch a movie it's usually something where I have read the book first, read an article about it or it’s something that I have a pretty good idea of what it’s going to be like. Sometimes it’s a follow up movie or something like that, or of course I've maybe seen a trailer of it. I really don’t do a lot of trailer watching as my problem with trailers is that more often than not they can actually ruin a movie for me. They either give away too much of the story or even worse give off the idea that the movie is better than it actually is,
now how many times has that happened to you? So with all the news hype surrounding Zero Dark Thirty I thought that I knew enough about the core elements of the film to not do any reading or anything beforehand.... I'd be going in blind shall we say. So with a handful of award nominations and a whole lot of controversy Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty finally arrived in the UK and l settled down in a local cinema to see what all the fuss was about. It's already been well documented that a couple of the main stars of the movie, Jessica Chastain and Mark Strong, have been through the mills trying to defend the scenes in the movie involving the torture of prisoners for information. After viewing the movie I'm not 100% sure exactly what all that fuss is about? Is it the torture scenes themselves? or the fact that there is a woman taking part in some of
FEB 2013 - issue (25)
them that is causing concern? I'm also not 100% sure what my own stance on the whole 'torture for information' thing would be so the movie has a clean slate as far as i am concerned. The movie kicks off almost immediately with some of the scenes that have been causing all the fuss, a detainee is shown restrained and being questioned regarding information on terrorist activity. Now right away, for me the scenes are no worse than those seen in 100’s of other movies before it and after the first few scenes involving it I am really beginning to wonder if its later on that they get worse or something but to be fair they actually stop all together and become more about mind games than physical torture, so yeh… what’s all the fuss guys? You really can’t single this movie out as any different to a lot of others with regards to that matter. So let’s get down to then review now that the big elephant in

the room is out of the way. Zero Dark Thirty has been incredibly written and manages to walk a very fine line and doesn’t really take any sides in what is actually a real life drama that is happening so far away from most of our daily lives. Throw that writing together with some awesome direction and acting skills and you have a movie that simply take you firmly in its grasp and drags you headlong through what is a complicated nightmare of a story that twists and turns, snaking its way through to an eventually riveting action finale. In my ignorance that’s exactly what I had been expecting, an action movie… gees I’ve never been so glad to be completely wrong about a movie as the action, although played out like one of the best action movies you’ll see this year, is the very least that this move has to offer. One of the underlying things in the movie is based around the idea that you are never really sure if director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, K19, Point Break) and writer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) are supporting or damning the way America goes about its ‘war on terrorism’ on the world stage. I guess they are classing it as a ‘war’ and its fair to say that the real life characters involved in using these methods believe that the end justifies the means when it comes to the tools of their trade. The ZDT team cleverly displays a respect for that but also lets the viewer have their own views on the state of affairs rather than ramming it down our throats. The movie kicks off with a reminder of those terrible events involving the destruction of the Twin Towers on the 11th Sep 2001. After the events of 9/11 the CIA identified Al Qaeda's leader Osama bin Laden, as the figurehead who masterminded the attacks and resolved to track him down and make him accountable for his actions. Maya (Jessica Chastain) initially is brought in to work with the team involved with interrogating detainees in the search for information leading to the capture of bin Laden. Maya is a determined agent and works hard with her opposite Dan (Jason Clarke) questioning prisoners and eventually accumulating enough information and mobilise a team to put together a plan to locate and capture their target. This is where it comes to light through the movies story about the possible time consuming stages that these agents had to go through to get things done. Possibly being a huge factor in the action taking 10 years to come to fruition. Their immediate superiors Joseph Bradley (Kyle Chandler) and Thomas (Jeremy Strong), the CIA director (James Gandolfini) and the national security advisor (Dillane) do offer some support but invariably place obstacles in the way of Maya’s plans to go in, and go in quick. Eventually approval is granted and a plan is constructed to carry out an illegally raid on a suspected hide-out location for bin Laden in Pakistan using a specially trained black-op team using top secret stealth helicopters.

It is an overall home run regarding the performances of almost all the cast involved, its compelling and they all portray things that we can quickly identify with as they carry out their duties. Chastain is the core of the movie and she opens up and shows us the viewer’s her fears and anxieties while hiding them from others. Clarke and Ehle are terrific as Maya’s allies who portray a determined optimism that can be rousing at times and also a wee bit nerve-wracking. It seems that the Boal and Bigelow goal is to simply cram scene after scene completely to the brim with character details that goes a long way to making each scene and situation completely believably, much like they did in The Hurt Locker. Their docu-style can be a tad jarring for some people but when the situation is just right for that kind of thing it works extremely well as in the case of this movie and their previous outing together.. It’s now well known that both guys have been taking flack for potentially using classified details throughout the movie and for the scenes of torture as we mentioned earlier. It’s almost a given that peoples attitude towards the US and their tactics etc. will cloud their feelings on the move do to its connotations. I’m sure it will divide opinions like only a few other movies have in the past. It will be a story of triumph over adversity and of fighting for justice for some, others on the other hand will simply not be able to see past some of the military tactics it depicts. Again regardless of your final decision on the movie it's pretty impossible not to go and see it. It’s immersive and enthralling and has an urgency that won’t fail to drag you along on its simply fascinating story played out by amazing performances from the cast and some sublime direction and filming. o be honest, I'm not really a big fan of the Hitchcock movies. I would really only class The Birds and Psycho as movies that really enjoyed, in fact, to be honest, I probably couldn’t tell you any more than maybe 1 or 2 of his other movies. So to say that l wasn't really too enthused to watch the new 'Hitchcock' movie is a wee bit of an understatement but learning that the movie wasn't truly a Bio-pic and that it was instead centred on the making of one of the movies i liked in Psycho I was a little happier. Another nice surprise was that rather than being a heavy docu-movie it was more of a light-hearted look at the whole process involved in writing/filming Psycho and that had me enjoying it even more than i had originally thought. Maybe it’s just the age I was when the movies were originally at their height and my youth meant I could only get into the more obvious movies like The Birds/Psycho. Perhaps a more mature audience will be able to find some deeper meaning in the new movie other than the surface FEB 2013 - issue (25)

comedy that I found. The Sachi Gervasi’s directed film focuses on the various problems that Hitchcock apparently encountered while making Psycho and his up and down relationship with his wife, Alma Reville. Gervasi really only known for directing 2004’s The Terminal does an adequate task in getting the best from a screenplay written by John J. McLaughlin from the book by Stephen Rebello. Anthony Hopkins plays the Hitchcock well and you can see that he looks as if he pretty much enjoyed that part. In a wee bit of bad timing he unfortunately is kinda upstaged by Tony Jones portrayal of the man in ‘The Girl’, a recent TV film based on the making of The Birds. His long suffering wife Alma is played by Helen Mirren and she is excellent as the movies ethical Page 116
backbone, going a long way to making us sympathetic to her trials as she attempts to stick by her larger than life husband. My only grip with her story is the romantic wishy washy sub-plot in which screenwriter Whitfield Cook (Danny Huston) attempts to woo Alma while Hitch is busy on set. Although pretty short on screen time James D’Arcy and Scarlett Johansson both play admirable roles as Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. It is obvious that the production/ writing crew deliberately went for the lighter side of things and definitely play down the darker elements of Hitchcock’s persona with his voyeuristic elements and abusive treatment all played down making him appear like a naughty bumbling school child. THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT 2 : Ghosts of Georgia 1 February
Ghosts of Georgia is the sister film to ‘The Haunting In Connecticut’ and was written by David Coggeshall and directed by Tom Elkins. The plot centres around Georgia couple Andy Wyrick (Chad Michael Murray, House of Wax) and his wife Lisa (Abigail Spencer, TV’s Mad Men) who move in to a new house with a little more history than they imagined. Their daughter Heidi begins to see “strangers” that seem to be only visible to her and eventually the family discover that they are not the house’s only residents. The family along with Lisa’s free-spirited sister, Joyce (Katee Sackhoff, TV’s Battlestar Galactica) are quickly drawn into a mystery regarding the true origins of the scary phenomenon. Building on the terror of the first movie this one traces a young family’s frightening fall into a centuries-old Southern hell and bringing them face-to-face with the evil that is rising from the very ground below them.
WARM BODIES 8 February
Warm Bodies is a paranormal romantic zombie comedy movie based on Isaac Marion's popular novel of the same name. It is directed and written by Jonathan Levine and stars Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer. Pulling on the perhaps obvious Twilight similarities the film focuses on the relationship between Julie (a teenage girl) and R (a zombie) and how their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world. The film throws Romeo and Juliet references around like cheap beach balls on a sunny day at T in the Park, the most obvious being the main characters names "R" and "Julie" but keep your eyes and ears peeled for more.
BEAUTIFUL CREATURES 13 February
Beautiful Creatures is a supernatural romance film based upon the novel of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The film is directed by Richard LaGravenese and stars Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich. When newcomer Lena Duchannes arrives in the small town of Gatlin she quickly captures the attention of Ethan Wate, who only wants to escape what he views as a boring and dead end town. STOKER 1 March
Stoker is one of those movies that blends horror, drama and psychological thrills together in a package that draws you in without you really realising it. Directed by Park Chan-wook and written by Wentworth Miller it stars Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, and Nicole Kidman. The script for the movie was in the 2010 “Black List” of the 10 best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood at that time and although influenced by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Miller has clarified that Stoker was “not about vampires. It was never meant to be about vampires but it is a horror story. India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) loses her father and best friend Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic accident. While trying to come to terms with her loss her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) suddenly arrived on the scene, whom she never knew existed. Charlie moves in with India and her emotionally unbalanced mother Evie (Nicole Kidman) and soon it seems that her father’s closest relative may just be helping fill the emptiness left behind by her father’s death.
OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL 8 March
Oz the Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, is inspired by L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and is set before the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The film stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, otherwise known as “The Wizard of Oz”. It also stars Mila Kunis as Theodora, Michelle Williams as Glinda, and Rachel Weisz as Evanora. Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. He thinks he’s hit the jackpot, with fame and fortune his for the taking... that is, until he meets the witches Theodora, Evanora and Glinda who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is really evil before it is too late. Putting his “magical” arts to use through illusion, ingenuity, and even a bit of wizardry, Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

The rest live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. That does not stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. Their Paranormal movies introduced some new story threads that are still dangling, however, so it may be that they want to stay for at least one more stint to tie those up.

After successfully crossing over (and under) the Misty Mountains, Thorin and Company must seek aid from a powerful stranger before taking on the dangers of Mirkwood Forest--without their Wizard. If they reach the human settlement of Lake-town it will be time for the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to fulfill his contract with the dwarves. The party must complete the journey to Lonely Mountain and burglar Baggins must seek out the Secret Door that will give them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug. And, where has Gandalf got off to? And what is his secret business to the south?

COWELL IN ‘X FACTOR’ CRISIS TALKS.
CH
S
imon Cowell has been arranging X Factor crisis talks with ITV producers and they have been slotted in for the end of Jan. Talks are reportedly to be held at Sony’s London headquarters and it is thought that high on the agenda will be the decision on exactly who sits on the panel for this year’s show. The fate of current four UK judges - Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger are all thought to be up for the chop. Strong contenders to be replaced are Barlow and Contostavlos at the very least although Barlow has already made rumblings that he may decide to quit before the axe is eventually wielded so he can concentrate on forthcoming Take That commitments. This news has effectively thrown fuel an previous rumours of old judge Cheryl Cole returning for another stint on the show. Cowell has said that he wants to “mix up” things on Page 134

the show so I suppose nothing should be ruled out, Changes will not only affect the judges but also the shows format also under scrutiny with a revamp of a few key elements expected this year. The arena auditions look to be in line for a change with them being axed and replaced with a return to the more intimate one on one auditions with the judges like they were in the original runs of the series. Audience rounds will potentially appear in later stages sometime before the Judges Houses phase just to test contestants ability to perform in front of a crowd before the live rounds. It is thought that meeting will not only include executives from the X Factor UK show but also representatives from the US version of the show as well. “There are a series of meetings taking place,” Cowell is quoted as saying. “All the Brits are coming in, all the Americans, and we’re gonna FEB 2013 - issue (25)
make some decisions then. We’re ‘going to mix it up. You’ve just got to try to make a better show than you did the year before. And if you do that, there’s a good chance you can get the numbers up.” Cowell has ruled out the chance of him returning to the judges’ table on the X Factor in the UK, as he wants to stay on the US version. Former Pussycats Dolls member Scherzinger has already let it be known that she has not yet been asked to return to the X Factor. While Contostavlos has recently refuted claims that she had quit show after she heard that Scherzinger had already been asked to return. Surprisingly, or maybe not? Mrs Ossy Osbourne, Sharon has also recently been hitting the rumour mill as a returning judge on this year’s show. in the UK, as he wants to stay on the US version.

ot to be the bearer of bad news but Steve Carell has said that ‘Returing to The Office wouldn’t feel right....’ as he explained why he will not make a return visit to his old mping ground to for the upcoming series finale.

LATE NIGHT EWINGS
Channel 5’s Dallas reboot gets shifted to a later timeslot.
C
hannel 5 has just announced that its primetime US made reboot of 80’s mega soap Dallas is to be moved to a new late-night slot. From Tuesday, February 19 the drama series will air the remainder of its season two episodes at 11pm Apparentty this is due to poor viewing figures for the 9pm slot since it’s return from the US midseason break in Jan. Feb 5th’s episode was reported to have only attracted 0.62 million viewers, which is lower than the 0.71m who tuned in to watch the season premiere. The shows ratings have also taken a downward turn in the US with channel TNT’s second season premiere watched by only 2.98m viewers, before eventually dropping 25% to 2.23m. A spokesperson for Channel 5 said: “Because Dallas has not performed as well as we wanted we have moved it to a different FEB 2013 - issue (25)
time slot.” Following the passing of original cast member Larry Hagman in Nov last year producers are set to focos the second season on the fall of JR Ewing. With large chunks of footage already shot before his death Dallas showrunner Cynthia Cidre recently leaked that a murder plot surrounding Hagman’s character JR, was set to be “emotional”. From a fans viewpoint the new Dallas hasn’t truly captured the fire or passion of the original, but it has still been a good watch and the retention of the old cast members was a good move for me. This news kinda has me concerned that with the quantity of US TV shows hitting the screens Dallas just might not survive beyond this season or next but lets hope that doesn’t happen and C5, and more importantly our friends in the States, get into the show and keep it running for a good while yet.... Dallas for the win. PAGE 135

F
ox in the US have picked up the rights to screen Gavin & Stacey and are currently working on the pilot episode after a script was developed back at the end of 2012. The new show will be rebranded as ‘Friends And Family’ for the US audience. I dont know why they would decide to change the name unless its something to do with the US having already used show titles with peoples names? Will and Grace etc. I’d have liked it to stay as Gavin and Stacey but maybe that is just me? Following on in the same format as the BBC original the pilot will focus on a couple who get together despite their very strange and different families. The pilot will be executive produced by David Rosen who was the creator of MTV comedy I Just Want My Pants Back. There has been no information released to date regarding possible casting for any of the shows characters. Gavin & Stacey creators James Corden and Ruth Jones are
Page 136
rumoured to be looking at possible earnings of up to £5m ($7.9m) each if the show becomes a success for Fox. Having been a huge fan of Gavin and Stacey i’m looking forward to seeing this develop as i always felt that there was lots more life in the series when Corden/Jones decided to poll the plug. I don’t think either of them have went on to do anything even closely matching their first success. Also being a massive ‘The Office’ fan I’m confident that done correctly there is a good opportunity for Fox to create something that could be just as good as, and as much of a success as, the US version of ‘The Office’ To that end I think that they have to seriously look at how the US version of ‘The Office’ was setup with a blend of well known faces and less known actors and sticking to just the right level of original storylines mixed with new ones rather than sticking to being just a complete remake or a complete FEB 2013 - issue (25)
new story. Casting wise, and thinking about ‘The Office’, I would like to see pretty well known actors in what I see as the main character roles in the show, surprisingly I don’t see Gavin or Stacey as one of those big characters. I would say that they need to look at having Smithy, Nessa and uncle Bryn as well known people and the rest as newbies if they want. In an ideal world I would love to see Jonah Hill as Smithy, Melissa McCarthy/Rebel Wilson as Nessa and Rhys Ifans as Uncle Bryn just to keep the Welshness in the show. I know, I Know..... just dreaming folks! STOP PRESS: Producers hav cast the actor who will play ‘Gavin’ as Parenthood star Jason Ritter. The remake has also been renamed ‘Friends & Family’, and instead of Barry Island in Wales, Gav’s love interest Stacey will hail from rural Pennsylvania.

ith the release of the new Hitchcock movie my mind wandered to one of the only 2 movies that I really enjoyed of his, ‘The Birds’. So much so that within a few days I had it on the TV for a wee bit of late night viewing. Now despite The Birds being released in the 60’s I was reminded just how good a scary movie it actually is and how badly some modern movies miss completely the things that make a movie truly a scary classic. That also got me to wondering why, in these days of reboots, remakes, follow ups and prequals, that The Birds hasn’t been remade in its entirety? Sure there has been a plethora of movies with backhanded homages etc. to the Hitch classic but never a full blown remake, like they did for Psycho back in 1998 with Vince Vaughn in the leading role, a remake that I didn’t find too bad. On doing a wee bit of digging it appears that there have actually been a few attempts at remaking The Birds and the latest one dates back to just 2011 when Platinum Dunes’, a Michael Bay production company, were in line to produce a brand new take on it. Whilst on set at another remake for ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ Platinum Dudes’ producers Brian Fuller and Andrew Form had these words about the possible Birds remake back then… Page 142
“I’m sure I’m not the only one who is against the idea of remaking Hitchcock’s classic film. It just doesn’t need to be remade, plain and simple, and the only reason I can see that Hollywood would want to remake it is because of the name recognition it would bring, and hence $$. The only resemblance of interest I had in the project was that Naomi Watts was apparently set to star in the lead role that Tippi Hedren played in the original (Watts is suited to the role, you must admit). But even then I would rather they just not remake it.” With nothing coming out from the studio since 2011 it appears for now then that The Birds has been shelved indefinitely. Disappointing for me as it is one of the old classic movies that I feel would truly benefit from a fresh HD look, better cast, slicker effects and a good tension base director. So… ‘The Birds’ itself was Hitchcock's follow-up to another classic Psycho from 1960 and was a pretty ground-breaking for its day and an apt addition to the then growing ‘graphic horror’ based movie genre and was again a slight glimpse inside the director's darker side of things. The story is loosely based on The Birds, a short story by Daphne du Maurier, and for the most part the action is set in the town of Bodega Bay and centres on fed up and overindulged posh ‘bird’ (forgive the pun) Melanie Daniels, played almost forget ably by Tippi Hedren, and her romantic infatuation with a jaunty lawyer
FEB 2013 - issue (25)
Mitch Brenner played by Rod Taylor almost as badly as Hedrens’ portrayal of her character. Miss Daniels decides to track her beefy heartthrob to his home town to deliver, again no pun intended, a couple of birds, a bizarre event after only one meeting with the guy. It’s an uneasy situation made worse when she meets schoolteacher Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette), Mitch's former flame, and then his domineering mother Lydia Brenner (Jessica Tandy). The shenanigans between the four are soon interrupted by the sudden attack of thousands of birds on the area which locals struggle to explain. This sets the scene for some of the most frightening and tense scenes in horror movies of their day as the bird attacks continue until their super creepy climax. So what is the big deal with the movie then? Well… it’s not really in the characters themselves or in the script, it’s more in the situation, drama and the tension built up by the Hitchcock mind and direction that hold the movie so strongly together. Remember though that this is in the 60’s and what passes for shock back then is not the same as it is today with our now desensitised youth having grown up in a world of super violence and gore around every ‘TV’ corner. A little went a long way back then and a lot was certainly left to an individual’s imagination where ‘as today it’s sort of thrown on screen for you to see in all its colourful glory with very little for you to think about.
some, but then despised by others but there is no doubting that it is up there as one of his more intricate and absorbing works. So much so that a fair collection of books have been penned analysing the movie scene by scene so each author could put across their ideas of it being good, bad or indifferent. Story wise the movie plays out ok I suppose with a pretty lengthy and slow beginning and some scenes tending to remove you from the drama of the situation too often and for too long but even sceptics are not able to refute the absolutely terrifying and magnetic power of almost all of the film's biggest scenes: the haunting birds eye views of Bodega Bay, playground monkey bars scene, the children's attacked at the birthday party, the attic scene with Melanie, the bids attacking the house and of course no one can fault the final indefinite shots following that house attack that leaves you to ponder humanity to a degree and of just how powerful the human race actually is? Despite the rather wooden acting, stuttery plot, lulls in the drama and forgive it for not having state of the art effects as ‘The Birds’ is a movie that NO ONE should miss, and do it BEFORE they potentially ruin it with a big budget remake. Sure you might hate it but you might love it and it’s definitely a movie that you should have on your seen list.

run with lawnmower engines, or a hamster in a wheel. There’s so much of this film that doesn’t work. The big reveal at the end of the second one is completely ruined in the first 10 minutes of Inferno. They could have played on it for a while but no, they just blew their load all over the screen in the first minute. It wasn’t a reveal to us, we already knew. It was just such a wasted opportunity. The action scenes are constantly being interrupted by close ups of Dougray Scott grimacing and saying something ridiculous, and when we get back to the action a totally different person will be in the lead. It just doesn’t flow. The end is really annoying too. It tries to do a big reveal like the end of the second one, but as with most things in this film it just doesn’t work. And what the devil happened to Dougray Scott, he’s so bad in this film that I want to burn any DVD I have with him in it. I may even burn the ones next to it so his badness doesn’t spread through my DVD collection like a crazy bad acting virus made of doom. I can’t believe I let them suck me in and think a film called Death Race 3 Inferno could be good. The fiends.

I
would just like to start this review with a confession. I really enjoyed the first two films in this series. I even enjoy the camp David Carradine classic. If like some people you didn’t even realise there was a second one. It was a highly enjoyable straight to DVD film that served as a prequel to the Jason Statham classic. This one is a sequel to the prequel. Yep, you heard right. The prequel has a sequel… Good grief. Anyway, this film starts off where the second one ended. This time however an awful Dougray Scott has bought over the rights to the death race and is taking it worldwide in an attempt to boost the cash flow. So they head off to South Africa. To be honest this is probably where the film completely falls on its ass. In the previous two the race scenes where all filmed up close, they seemed quite claustrophobic and it was at least believable that the cars would have no problem getting in each others way. This time they are driving in the dessert. It makes for some great back drops but the car racing just doesn’t work because of it. I mean they look so slow, like the big cars are actually being

His circle includes offbeat pairing Sam (Emma Watson) and her step-brother Patrick (Ezra Miller). Sam is trying to change her spots and shed her wild ways as she approaches her college years while Patrick is a proud gay young man struggling to be accepted in today’s still very homophobic world. With the story mostly centred on the trio there’s plenty of buddy bonding and the odd emotional rammy between the close friends. Although the nature of the movie is to cycle along, to the detriment of any real pace or urgency about it, its real strength is in the performances from the cast during the course of the story. This is what should draw you to it and the roles of the three main cast members Lerman, Watson and Miller are what truly stand Perks well and truly above your average teen flick and a refreshing watch in this particular genre. Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine Contributer
I
t’s safe to say that most films touching on the subject of teenage life lean towards little more than a trendy soundtrack, weak story line and whatever angsty teen heartthrob happens to be doing the rounds at that time. Sure sometimes we even get a bit of a plot so where exactly does The Perks of Being a Wallflower sit amongst those?… well thankfully this movie is actually an unusual rarity, bringing to the table an insightful, character-driven saunter along the unavoidably awkward road that most teenagers find themselves navigating at one point or another. It’s set in the 1990s and director Stephen Chbosky, in an adaption of his own novel, does a fine job of avoiding the typical clichés when dealing with issues of peer pressure, sexuality, drugs taking and not forgetting a fair bit of teen partying at its best, or is it worst? The story goes that high-school misfit Charlie (Logan Lerman) finds himself somehow ‘in with the out crowd’, meaning he has ended up in the social circle of all the other outsiders who are without a normal social circle. create an army and start a new world order. Vanne Damme and Dolph are hardly in it so it’s up to the other cats to get the film moving. I have a few beefs with it. First up Andre Arlovskis character makes no sense. He would, but at one point he turns up and injects Scott Adkins with a strange serum which will basically cause you to have a seizure (another one of my beefs), next minute he’s trying to kill him again… What the hell? Couldn’t he have just killed him a minute ago? It’s never really explained why he’s so determined to kill him either. He’s like a really crap Terminator. As mentioned there, is also the crazy seizure inducing moments after they are injected with the serum. It’s horrendous and really painful on the eyes. Scott Adkins is also a really crap in it, but he was in Hollyoaks so you know, it’s to be expected. He is however awesome in the fight scenes which more than makes up for it. Van Damme is also wearing some crazy ass make up, which is never explained. You get the feeling he turned up on set like that and no one dared ask him why or they’d get a roundhouse kick to the face. That’s what I hope happened anyway.
T
he mighty Van damme and Dolph turn up in yet another Universal Soldier film. Alarmingly this is the sixth if you count the slightly dodgy unofficial films, but it’s the fourth official one. Yeah, it makes no sense to me either but the last one was good so I’m hoping for more in the way of goodness.
Apart from those faults it’s actually quite enjoyable for what is ultimately a straight to DVD action film. I mean it was released in the cinema for a second but we’ll ignore that. It has straight to DVD all over it. It tries really hard to be more than just a straight to DVD film. It tries to bring in a ton of story points which it thinks are amazing, and oh my Zod moments but you will be watching this for the action, and that’s the only reason you’ll watch it again. Unless you enjoy having seizures that is.
So this film kind of follows on from Regeneration, but more just some of the ideas that were planted in the last one rather than a full blown follow up. Which is odd since it was directed by the same guy, but what the hell do I know? He also directed the Cung Le/ Van Damme film Dragon eyes so there’s a few things you will now about this film before it goes ahead. It will have amazing fight scenes, and it will have a very small budget. This time we follow Scott Adkins trying to find Van Damme after he brutally murdered his family. You have MMA fighter Andre Arlovski chasing him for most of the film while the Universal Soldiers attempt to discover how to clone each other so they can Page 146

Through a twist of fate the Scooby gang realise that the Grabbers don’t like people with an extremely high amount of alcohol in their blood stream. So the remarkable plan, and possibly my favourite plan in any movie since Dr Stanz yelled “Get her”, is to get everyone on the Island into a pub and get them horrendously drunk on crazy moonshine… Huzzah. It’s a good fun film which doesn’t at any time try too hard to be something more than it is. A film about a sea monster running around an island full of drunk people. If you’re a fan of funny horror films, or giant sea monster films it’s definitely worth a pick up… But you probably realised that already.

f you’ve had the misfortune of reading any of my earlier reviews you probably know that I’m a big fan of monster films… Luckily for me, this month there’s another one. This time we have Grabbers, with an outstanding British cast to boot. Set on an island off the coast of Ireland (try saying that when you’re drunk) it features some big ass sea creatures coming ashore for food. So you have Richard Coyle running about as a drunken police man trying to find out why people are mysteriously turning up dead. He has some help from newcomer to the island, Ruth Bradley and marine biologist Russell Tovey who for some reason is on the island. Don’t get me wrong it was probably explained at some point but I just remember wondering what the hell a marine biologist was doing on an island whose entire community fitted into one small pub every time he appeared on the screen. Now I think about it I’m not even sure he was a marine biologist. Never mind, I like Russell Tovey so I’m not gonna give him a hard time.

they might hold, he comes across disturbing scenes detailing the murders he’s investigating. Viewing more tapes he locates footage of other ritually killings and slaughtered families. The dogged writer sinks deeper into his work the more and he is plagued with visions as he struggles to put the horrible images to the back of his mind as he tries to uncover the truth. SINISTER is a discomforting testimony to the true power and pull of the moving image. It is easy to make comparisons to ourselves as Ellison obsessively pours over the home movies, repeat viewing every frame for potential clues to the locations or to the people involved in the gruesome acts. We know he is doing what we are doing and trying to carefully take in his various findings from an objective distance, but he (like us perhaps) is still susceptible to being affected by what passes before his eyes.
S
inister is a scary new thriller brought to you by director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill who’s previous work include Paranormal Activity and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
The movie itself is overall a pretty scary affair. With director and co-writer mixing a good few ‘jump’ moments while at the same time keeping up an overall feeling of heavy tension and nervous unease. It perhaps is borrows the ‘feeling’ from movie such as The Shining, The Ring, Psycho among a host of others. The scary bits don’t necessarily come in the form of blood and guts splattered across the screen but more from classic suggestion techniques... from the flickering images burned into your consciousness… its chilling. Settle down a night, put all the lights out, turn the volume up and enjoy.
Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) is a true crime novelist who finds a box full of mysterious, distressing home movies clips that eventually drag him and his family through a terrifying supernatural horror nightmare. Ellison has a wee bit of a problem and trouble seems to follow him around like a bad smell. His latest venture sees him carrying on where he left off and it does little to ingratiate him with the local community as he carries out his research around a young girl who went missing soon after her parents and two siblings were found hanged from a tree in the backyard of the family home. The author strangely moves his own family into the victims’ home in a macabre decision to help him get to grips with the whole thing. He chooses not to tell his wife Tracy (Juliet Rylance) about the house’s past history. Soon after moving in Ellison finds a box of 8mm home movies while searching the attic. The tape cases are identified by innocuous enough titles however when he fires up the old projector to take a peek at what Page 148

The flash backs slowly changing as more truth comes to light until all the events unravel. It’s a low budget film, with a killer cast. The story line is interesting and it flows so well. It’s one of those films that ends and you can’t believe you’ve been watching it for 90 minutes. I can’t praise this film highly enough. It’s been out a while now too so you should be able to pick it up pretty cheap. See you next time for more lost goodness film fans.

I
recently watched the 90s classic Boxing Helena and found myself wondering what happened to Jennifer Chambers Lynch, the writer/ director of the film. Turns out the daughter of David Lynch had such a bad time making Boxing Helena that she didn’t make a new film for 15 years. Which is a shame really because if Surveillance is anything to go by, we’ve missed out on a lot of awesome films, it’s outstanding. The film follows a couple of FBI agents following a wave of violence to a remote town and turn up to help local police after one of their own is gunned down in a rather horrific gun fight. The witness testimonies are wildly different though so they slowly try to piece the events of the day together. Ok, it doesn’t sound great but I assure you the film is outstanding. Helped in a big way with amazing performances by Bill Pullman, Julia Ormond and Michael Ironside. The film is told through a lot of flashbacks. Unlike most flash back films this one merges together really well. Especially since everyone has a differFEB 2013 - issue (25)

UYA was one of the most successful products during its Kickstarter campaign raising over $8.5 million and the Android videogame console will partner up with US retailers such as Amazon, Gamestop, Target, Best Buy and more this June on its release. Anyone that pre-ordered the Ouya will be pleased to see the actual device arrive in April, a whole 2 months prior to the official release date in June and backers of
the Ouya will receive the console even earlier getting hold of it as early as next month. Annoyingly there is a $25 delivery fee to the UK, it’ll probably be worth it to wait until an official UK launch as we would hopefully be retailed with a cheaper price here and hopefully not just a standard £99 which seems to happen with some stuff from the states. The OUYA console bundled with a controller will set you back $99.99, while picking up a second standalone controller will cost $49.99. Regarding the pricing OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman points out that, "It’s a premium price for a controller, but with the addition of the touchpad really makes it a premium in the marketplace".

THE YEAR OF THE
J
ANDROID
Will Android Console’s be a major threat to the upcoming Xbox 720 and PS4?
ust in case you don’t know... sometime this year Microsoft and Sony will be unveiling their next consoles the Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4. However there will also be released a bunch of brand new Android consoles like the Kickstart funded Ouya and GameStick and other from some heavy hitters like the NVidia Shield. How will these new consoles fair, will they even compete with the big leagues or maybe even go on to dominate the gaming world? I suppose only time will tell. Lets look at a couple of these new devices. If you haven’t heard of OUYA (yes that’s what it’s called) it’s an Android gaming console that
Page 168
connects to your TV and obviously acts as an android system. Ouya was part of a Kickstarter project and the development and production of the unit has been fully funded through that process. The target for OUYA to raise to allow the unit to be produced was only $950,000, the campaign went on to raise a whopping $8,596,474 and was one of the most successful to datte on the KIckstart site. With the unit now in complete production an official released date of June 2013 has been set as we mwentioned in a previous news article. You can pre-order a unit now for $99 and every game to be released will have some sort of free-to-try element and OUYA has partnered will NVidia to bring gamers the best graphics possible for the money. Software wise you will initially have a bunch of Android games ported over but some big android supporters who have embraced the OUYA and partnerered with them tio bring the best apps possible include VEVO, iheartradio, Teneln, XBMC, Plex, Twitch.tv and Onlive. Not to be left out NVidia’s have produced their very own Android based unit called Project Shield,

it’s a handheld portable android gaming device which comes with a 5-inch 720p multi-touch screen and the advanced processing power of NVidia Tegra 4. Not only can you play android games using the latest Android Jelly Bean operating system from Google but stream your pc games to the device using Wi-Fi. You can even play on your HDTV or pc screen. Although in order to stream your PC games your PC will need the certain system requirements to do so. So will these new consoles revolutionise gaming. It is very debatable and it all comes down to reasons why you would buy instead of the new PlayStation or Xbox. One difference is the streaming aspect these consoles will which Sony and Microsoft will have to look deeply and think about. Also OUYA is an open platform which will allow any developers or person that knows how to create a game to create and release their game the console and make money whereas the PlayStation and Xbox is a closed platform. Also we are not really seeing any major game announcements yet for

the OUYA that are going to make us want to buy it, such as any major blockbuster games like Skyrim, Call of Duty etc. The games for OUYA most people will already have on their phone or tablets. So i’m guessing Android consoles are in it for the long haul and on the plus side from a consumer point of view, you are getting a lot of games for a lot cheaper price than on any of the bigger consoles. So it may come down to whether you want a whole bunch of Android games that are worth £5, maybe cheaper, or a small handfull of massive game that’s worth £40.
visuals... it is NVidia after all? Unless you’re a PC gamer and have the requirements then you also get a controller for your PC and stream your PC games to the 5-inch screen and play anywhere in your house
Android consoles are going to be a hell of a lot cheaper than the next Sony or Microsoft consoles but do you really want to play decent Android quality games on your TV or play the big blockbuster games with all the bells and whistles? Horses fo courses i suppose and i can see a lot of games having potentiially both.
from your bed or even on the toilet. One issue though with that is pretty much all PC gamers I know prefer a mouse and keyboard to a controller, I actually prefer the controller to the mouse and keyboard for games such as Skyrim as I am a console guy who occasionally plays pc games, so to me their trying to attract console to buy the Shield. I actually have a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver and controller for Windows which allows me to play some console based games that support a controllers on PC and it works pretty well. But I can’t imagine a lot console players having more than a few pc games, or even owning a PC. Or have PC games in order to stream games to the Shield? It’s a kinda difficult to place a requirement for the thing? I suppose it’s showing now that there are more ways available to play PC games through handheld devices and streaming etc. Plus it does have an awesome name… NVIDIA SHIELD.
NVidia Shield on the other hand, Hmmm.... all I see is a controller for your android games with a small HD screen? Unless you play on your TV of course. BUT you potentially wilol get the amazing graphics that could compete with normal console

CEO Brian Farrell and president Jason Rubin explained to employees in a letter that any unclaimed assets would still be part of the publisher's Chapter 11 case and it would be making every effort to find appropriate buyers. An bad note it looks like this could to spell bad news for Darksiders developer Vigil Games, as some of their former employees can already be found on social networking sites asking about possible vacancies with other companies. Despite this it is hoped that The Darksiders series will still be picked up by a publisher, along with some of the other, so far unclaimed, franchises like Red Faction, Destroy All Humans and de Blob.

To the core it’s a button mashing fighting like Mortal Kombat but this time with our favourite DC super heroes. With a number of DC characters to choose from such as Batman, The Flash, NightWing, Solomon Grundy, Superman and Wonder Woman and much more. The survivors are locked inside quarantine zones. Joel, a hardened black-marketer within one of the quarantine zones, goes through an event which makes him promise an old friend that he will get a young girl, Ellie, away from the cruel command. They begin a journey through the USA, avoiding the Infected, humanoid creatures whose single aim has become spreading the fungal infection and scavengers that survive outside the quarantine zones who see Joel and Ellie as their latest prey. But, added to their problems, the military are determined to find Ellie and bring her back under their power. The player will take control of Joel, while Ellie will be controlled by the AI. The game will involve gun fights and melee combat and it will have a cover system. The player will fight off the Infected, former humans, and the Survivors, humans that are not infected, but are hostile towards Joel and Ellie. A new gameplay mechanic is a feature the developers call “dynamic stealth”, meaning that there are many different types of strategies and techniques that the player can use at any given time as they approach a new situation, to which enemies will react differently. Though situations can have a different outcome, it all mainly depends on the player’s preference of play. After a delay The Last of Us is now set to be released June 14th 2013.

Bride of Frankenstein was directed by James Whale and stars Boris Karloff as The Monster, Elsa Lanchester in the dual role of his mate and Mary Shelley, Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein, and Ernest Thesiger as Doctor Septimus Pretorius. The film follows on immediately from the events of the earlier film, and is rooted in a subplot of the original Mary Shelley novel, Frankenstein (1818). In the film, a chastened Henry Frankenstein abandons his plans to create life, only to be tempted and finally coerced by the Monster, encouraged by Henry’s old mentor Dr. Pretorius, into constructing a mate for him.
