L

ocal pioneers of melodic madness ‘Teenage China’ are a fresh new band from Livingston who have built their own modern and progressive style. Inspired by bands like Glassjaw, Closure in Moscow and Thrice, and with a hint of awesome and a twist of Livi, their debut EP (2013) was initially released as a free online download and has recently become available to purchase on CD. Comprised by the founders of nostalgically memorable group ‘Amid Concrete and

Page 4

Callousness’, the band utilize their well earned music biz connections to plug themselves into the scene and be heard all over the world. Their sweet blend of aurally pleasing, digitized, miraculously composed super-sounds are so catchy and accessible that you can expect to find them on top of the rock-world in no time. In fact, the tunes are so beautifully arranged and recorded by evil wizard and ‘GameWank’ presenter Barry ‘Nonstop’ Topping and the rest, you could find yourself going over each verse again and again in your head until you collapse. The songs literally make me want to cry, and I’m pretty much dead inside. Warbling mic swinger Ged Cartwright tells us, “We began recording our entirely self funded, self recorded and self produced debut EP ‘Forth’ last December. Off the back of this, we hope to establish a worldwide

fanbase through internet promotion and a nationwide following by playing as many shows as we can.” Conclusion: Teenage China are a group worth keeping an eye on as they are sure to become one of Scotland’s rare and valuable assets in the ever changing, ever astounding quadraverse of musicianship. That’s all for now. Go away. www.teenagechina.bandcamp.com www.facebook.com/teenagechina www.twitter.com/teenagechina

ipster math metal quartet `The Colour Pink is Gay` are an extreme tech-core band with a passion for large, modern sounds. These boyz have performed for sold-out crowds all over the UK and abroad, making themselves known as one of the most cutting edge thrash bands around. Thanks to their hard work within the music scene (and a name difficult to forget) the band have received support from some of the best promoters and agents in the industry and had the opportunity to showcase their style with some massive acts. The endlessly arousing music video for their track ‘DVDA’ is a gritty ode to sadistic cannibalism shot in grainy, retro 8mm and is one of the most distressing things I have ever seen. TCPIG have also appeared as special guests on Glasgow based rock show `Metal outlaw TV` and been recognized by many big name acts including `As

Blood Runs Black` (the band responsible for a million other infant squealers calling themselves `As something does something`). When asked about the music the band says, “It’s energising, it’s escapism, it’s every emotion tied into these songs that we have hopefully delivered. Hopefully we get that across where people can be touched in different ways like mentioned, but horribly touched...but if you like to be raped...then cool. You’ll love us.” Life eh? As well as keeping busy on the road, the guys have other projects going on across Scotland including a successful studio in Glasgow to pack out their chaos agenda. Their rocket fuelled album ‘i/O’ is available to order from their website and is without a doubt worth a listen if you feed from the darkest reaches of music. Also, in their facebook cover photo, the guitarist Simon looks like a young Christopher Hitchens, so that’s good too. www.facebook.com/thecolourpinkisgay Words by Christopher Jordan for GoGuide Magazine Contributor

AlbA

E RomA

dinburgh based (an partially West Lothian bred) freak pop band ‘AlbaRoma’ are an entertaining septet of hipster swingers with a ‘pub-shanty-based’ musical style. With infectious folk rhythms and haunting melodies, the AlbaRoma girls and boys have taken the alehouse theme to a whole new level with their whacking of wood, blowing of sticks and plucking of wires. Their new song entitled ‘Underneath the Stairs’ is a creepy ode to lusty goings, much on in the style of a Swiss accordion band, or perhaps Primus. The song contains elements of Balkans groove with pub chanting folk, jolly fiddles and even some Arabic singing in the beginning. The music video is a black and white performance where moustache brandishing front-man Andy Jamieson and his band of posh gypsies play for Edinburgh’s own roller derby team, the ‘Auld Reeky Roller girls’ at the ‘Fiddler’s Elbow’. The video itself (shot and produced by Michael Dodds and Neil Steven) is mostly of the band bobbing on stage while a small group of music lover’s fill the floor with cheerful antics. If I had to make 1 criticism (and I don’t but I will), it is that the soul swallowing colourlessness of the piece doesn’t quite capture the get-up-andgo feel I’m sure the band are trying to create. While the music puts one in mind of Italian chefs rushing around a kitchen to prepare a meal, the result is like staring at an old film about Serbian genocide. Also, that hat looks silly! (Yeah!) (I think the hat’s cool man, keep it - Ed) That being moaned about, the music is well arranged, original and downright wacky, which is what the world really needs, and AlbaRoma will never be out of place in a good tavern, grog house or saloon. The album launch takes place on the 26th July at Bannermans, Edinburgh. Be there, but be drunk. www.facebook.com/albaroma www.reverbnation.com/albaroma

ith Rockness a distant memory, Scotland’s festival season kicks off in the next few weeks with T In The Park 2013 and having seen how uninteresting the Rockness event was for me personally, or lets face it probably for anyone other than those going along for the ‘event’ rather than to experience the variety and diversity of the music on offer, it’s looking like it’s just another year of pretty much more of the same from the TITP event organisers. I’ve read recently a few scathing articles regarding the recent line-ups and the 2013 one leaves me pretty puzzled as to where one Scotsman turns for an ‘alternative’ to what seems to be the norm these days, ‘pop festivals’ as opposed to rock festivals. Rockness and T are slowly but surely turning into nothing more than an extension of T4 on the beach, or a large scale Radio 1 Big Weekend. For anyone interested in exploring new music, seeing and experiencing something or someone they haven’t seen before on TV it’s a case of ‘move along please’. I’m guessing it’s not going to change much

Page 10

in the near future either as organisers try to rake in as much money as possible at a time when money is hard to come by and I’m pretty sure that a TOTP (Top of The Pops) Festival as opposed to TITP Festival is just around the corner. Hey… I know it’s a wacky idea but I would actually really love to see a separate area of TITP set aside specifically for alternative, rock, punk, metal and NEW underground music, something that is not particularly attached to the ‘commercial’ side of TITP. Something where you can buy a separate ticket that doesn’t let you in to the main chart/pop/soft rock/dance area of the festival. An area which isn’t as big would be fine, let’s face it we’re talking about having genres playing that perhaps wouldn’t attract as large a fanbase as say Rianna or Snoop Dogg. Not going to happen, but it would be rather nice. In an ideal world a festival would have equal amounts of something for everyone but I suppose organisers need to go where the easy money goes and at the moment that’s on sugar coated TV friendly pop. As an alternative to the big 2 in Scotland there isn’t really much to go for with the biggest probably being the Wickerman Festival. Wickerman provides something targeted to a more mature, family oriented audience, with a line-up of course that reflects that, with a mixture of old’ish artists, DJ’s and flashback bands with very little new or up and coming or underground bands

JULY 2013 - issue (30)

playing over the weekend. Its saving grace (as far as new music is concerned) is the Solus Tent, which has a fair spattering of unsigned bands. For a local event the closest we have to a ‘music’ festival there is The Friends of Kirkton’s annual ‘Party in the Park’ which is in the grounds of Kirkton Park in Bathgate (commonly known as ‘Kaim Park’ to most people not from the . The event isn’t truly a music festival but a family fun day but usually having 2 stages each year hosting various solo artists, bands and performances by local organisations. This year however sees the first appearance of our very own GoGuide ‘Grassroots’ Area with 2 stages where we will host sets from some of the best established and up an coming bands, solo artists, DJ’s etc. in the local area, yeh that’s right… all from our very own doorstep…. Absolutely 100% local artists…!!!!! We will be announcing the full line-up in the next couple of weeks as we try desperately to cram as much amazing stuff into our wee 6 hour window as we can so keep your eyes peeled to the websites for announcements shortly. www.tinthepark.com www.thewickermanfestival.co.uk www.facebook.com/ events/384155048369620 Words by Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine

2013 SHED OF THE YEAR

Alex Holland’s 100% recycled ‘Shed of the Year’

O

k, i suppose you could say that I’m a shed kinda guy?... although not for sitting in but for storing stuff. I have a detached garage which is used as a recording studio, a normal sized shed for gardening tools, bikes etc and an extra shed we bought as a wee additional storage area for all the other junk, sorry stuff, we have. Now when we bought our extra shed I wanted something a wee bit bigger than the gardening shed, needless to say when I eventually settled on the one I wanted we were double our budget and the web sites name for the shed was ‘Village Hall’. As of this moment you can’t get in to either of our sheds for ‘stuff’, they’re not pretty and are kinda holding areas before departing to either the

Page 26

bucket, the tip or to someone else who can find a use for them.

and even the obligatory fridge to cool Mr H’s drinks.

So although we do have a fair sized shed real-estate dotted around our rather large garden I wouldn’t say I enjoy my time in my sheds at all, or that they are particularly attractive… unlike some peoples sheds as can be seen by this years ‘Shed of the Year’ competition which was entered by almost 2000 shed addicts who have lovingly created their own wee piece of heaven to while away their time in blissful ignorance of the hectic world outside.

The £1,000 prize money from sponsors Cuprinol has already been earmarked to improve the electricity supply to the shed by installing a wind turbine to supplement the solar panel

Sited 750ft above sea level in the Cambrian Mountains, in mid Wales this year’s winner, a rustic wooden escape from the daily hum drum, is topped by a rowing boat and has been built by owner Alex Holland from Machynlleth, using 100% recycled material and is mostly powered by the sun.. Interior light is supplied using a 20-watt solar panel powering an LED lighting system, a wood burner, 12v sound system, gas cooker JULY 2013 - issue (30)

“I am absolutely delighted to have won the 2013 Shed of the Year competition,” he said. “The standard and creativity shown by the other entrants has been incredible so I am genuinely surprised to have reached the top spot. Alex was selected as the winner by a panel of judges including Channel 4 property presenter Sarah Beeny, British designer, writer and TV presenter Kevin McCloud, Shed of the Year founder Uncle Wilco and last year’s winner John Plumridge. STAY SAFE IN THE SUN

S

ummer is here….. so I’m guessing us Scots will be stripped to the waist for a few weekends over the next month or so and its maybe time to think seriously about sun protection..!!!!!! I know, I know…. The fact we don’t get as much sun as other places makes it even more important that we take real precautions in order to enjot the weather and not end up RED faced or worse. Dr. Stefanie Williams a dermatologist at European Dermatology in London tells us how to ensure that we keep our bodies as safe as possible from the ageing effects of the sun and of course reduce the chances of skin cancer.

Tip 1: Use a higher SPF factor than you would normally use. Try an SPF 30-50 instead of a 12-15 “It’s true that the sun increases the risk of skin cancer while seriously ageing your skin. So yes - the single, most vital step you can take to keep your skin in great condition is to apply daily sun protection. However, this is where the confusion begins. If you really want to reap the benefits of

Page 28

sun protection, you need much, much more than just SPF (sun protection factor) 12 or 15. The first reason is that the way we apply moisturiser means we rarely reach the level of protection stated on the pack. We simply don’t use the same thick layers they slap on when they test sunscreens in the lab. The second reason is that we only apply the moisturiser once, in the morning. In order to keep the sun protection level high, we would need to reapply the product every two hours or so throughout the day, which of course

FEATURE

nobody does on a daily basis. You need to apply a broad-spectrum protection with SPF (UVB) 30-50 so that you’ll still have some decent protection in the afternoon when you need it most.”

Tip 2: Use a product that has a broad-spectrum protection “Ultraviolet sun irradiation reaching the earth’s surface is divided into UVA and UVB rays (UVC is usually filtered out by the

atmosphere and does not reach us down here). Simply put, you could say that UVB makes your skin burn, while UVA makes it age. And on top of that both of them are involved in skin cancer generation. While UVB has a higher energy, UVA is actually much more plentiful on the earth’s surface and penetrates much deeper into the skin. The SPF itself only tells us about protection against burning UVB rays, but says nothing about UVA protection at all. Filters providing UVA protection are for example titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. To get a good indication about a product’s UVA protection, you need to know its PPD (persistent pigment darkening) factor, which doesn’t always appear on the pack. UVA star ratings are very misguiding. These ratings aren’t absolute values - merely an indication of the ratio of UVA to UVB protection. You could have a product with SPF 50 but with only 4 stars for UVA, which in fact protects skin better from UVA than a lower SPF product with 5 UVA stars. Alternatively some products display the newer UVA logo, which guarantees a standardized ratio of 1:3 UVA protection to UVB. Again, this new logo does not really tell us an exact PPD, but is marginally better than the star rating.”

Tip 3: For best protection use sun protection throughout the year and not just in the summer months.

“Levels of ageing UVA fluctuate much less with the seasons compared to burning UVB rays. While in winter you might not get sunburned, your skin can still be exposed to significant amounts of UVA without even noticing.

Tip 4: To get the best protection use an antioxidant serum before applying your sun protection.

UVA can also penetrate window glass and clouds, so has an impact even on cloudy days. So I always recommend using the same sun protection level of broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 in summer and winter.”

“Commercial sun protection creams only protect from UVB and UVA. However, newest research shows that it is not only ultraviolet irradiation (i.e. UVA and UVB), which damages our skin. The longer wavelengths in the sun’s electromagnetic irradiation - i.e. infrared and visible light - can harm our skin too. ‘Normal’ sun protection creams unfortunately can’t shield our skin from these types of rays. That’s why we should wear a high-grade antioxidant product underneath your sun protection cream to help reduce the oxidative stress cause by free radical damage. This also reduces free radical damage caused by pollution, smoking etc. As a general rule, the sun protection product should always be applied last (just before the make-up).”

Tip 5: Top up your vitamin D levels by taking supplements “The skin needs sunlight (namely UVB) to produce vitamin D and a sufficient level of vitamin D in our blood is crucial to overall health. However, as a dermatologist, I would much r ather recommend taking vitamin D supplements to adjust your level if you’re deficient. At the end of the day, UV light not only ages your skin, but can also cause skin cancer. The amount of vitamin D your skin produces depends on a variety of factors including its colour - pale skins synthesize vitamin D faster than dark skins, but they also burn more easily. There is unfortunately no established level of sun exposure, which will guarantee to produce enough vitamin D without harming your skin.

Dr. Stefanie Williams is a Dermatologist and Medical Director of European Dermatology London. www.eudelo.com Original Article: www.handbag.com

With regards to dosage, for most people, a vitamin D supplementation of 1000 IU per day (25ug) is sufficient (the common dose of 400 IU as often present in multi-vitamin products is usually too low), but best to ask your doctor to measure your blood level first.’”

Animals That People Eat Alive Sea Urchins

Going into the sea to collect your own sea urchins and eating them straight away has become a popular practice in Italy, where they call them Ricci di Mare. Since the edible part—the roe— is on the inside of the sea urchin, there is a special tool to open them up—though it can also be done with a scissors.

12 Ways to Eat Right on a Budget

Drunken Shrimp

1. Buy in season

Drunken shrimp comes from China is not always served live. But when it is, it is always served in a bowl of Baijiu, a drink with about forty to sixty per cent alcohol content. The shrimps jump around, trying to escape, and the consumer has to catch it and stuff it in his mouth before it gets away.

Asparagus peaks in spring, while blueberries are ripest in summer. Besides being fresher and more likely to be locally grown, produce is more affordable in season.

2. Buy frozen and stock up

Ever regrettably tossed a three-dollar head of Romaine that sat in your fridge for a week? Frozen foods eliminate that problem and save you money. You can literally buy months of veggies and other foods to store in your freezer, so you always have organic frozen spinach to toss into soups, stews, or to use as a side dish.

Noma Salad

3. Less meat, more plant-based foods Grass-fed beef and wild-caught salmon are worth the extra money. They aren’t cheap, and they can strain your budget when you’re trying to feed a family of four or more. Rather than buy lower-quality, conventionally produced meats, load your plate with less meat and more green veggies, good fats like avocado, and starchy high-fibre carbs.

4. Start your day with a protein shake

Load plant-based (but not soy), low-sugar protein powder with unsweetened coconut or almond milk, berries, kale, and flax or chia seeds. For less than you’d spend on a grande dark roast or fat-storing muffin, you’ll have a fast, easy, nutrient-rich shake that keeps you full and focused for hours.

Noma, based primarily in Copenhagen has ranked as the best restaurant in the world for three years now. They serve a salad crawling with ants, which are chilled so that they move slower, and which are supposed to taste like lemongrass. Chilled or not, the fact remains that there are ants crawling all over your lettuce leaves.

Frog Sashimi

For this dish, a frog is kept in the

kitchen until somebody orders the frog sashimi, at which point it is taken out and sliced open on a cold platter. The sashimi bits are taken off, and then the rest of the frog is simmered to make a soup. The dish contains, of all things, the still-beating heart of the frog.

Ikizukuri

Ikizukuri means “prepared alive”, and is a fish dish. Generally, as with lobster, there is a large tank in the restaurant where patrons can go up and choose the fish they want to eat. When the fish is selected, the chef will gut it and serve it almost immediately. The chef will slice off a few pieces of fish, but leave the whole thing largely intact. Not only that, but the bits that are cut off are to be done in such a way that the person eating it can see the fish’s heart beating and mouth moving while they eat it.

Oysters

Most people who eat oysters don’t even realize that they’re alive at the time (to be fair, it’s often difficult to tell). Oysters are generally served live because they deteriorate much faster than most other animals when dead. When their shells are cracked open, they can survive for a significant amount of time. It is only when the flesh is actually separated from the shells that they begin to die; this is why oysters are almost always sucked directly out of their shells. t-people-eat-alive/

5. Don’t snack

When you do your meals correctly, you don’t need to snack. Every time you eat, you raise insulin levels. Constant grazing takes a toll on your digestive system and doesn’t allow your body a break to reach into your fat stores. Many people snack from boredom, stress, or even thirst, so address your underlying urge to munch and step away from the vending machines. Foods That Are Shockingly Good For You

But does it actually do anything for your body?

1 CAK E, BAC ON, AND EGG S

Scientists like a good laugh as much as anyone, so they took people who were already fat and then fed those people cake for breakfast. But instead of gaining weight, the researchers found that eating cake or a similar dessert sweet in the morning could lead to significant weight loss. And there isn’t even any fine print: adding a breakfast sweet was the only “lifestyle change” these people made. The key here is getting the sugary stuff out of the way early in the day. Your body is most active in the morning, especially in digesting food. You’re also giving it all day to use up the energy. Eating large evening meals often causes your body to just start storing (that’s called ‘fat’) because it doesn’t have anything to do with the energy you’ve given it.

2 CHO COL ATE IS GO OD FOR YOU R HEA RT

It’s pretty common knowledge by now that chocolate (quality dark chocolate, not some Hershey’s vomit-scented knock-off) benefits blood pressure and heart function when consumed daily in moderate quantities. Of course, you can’t expect your prescription drug company to recognize that, but maybe your skin care company will think about adding chocolate to their product lines because it’s actually good for your skin, too. Surprisingly, eating a little chocolate moistens your skin, makes it smoother and protects it against sunburn. You could forget that expensive prescription cream with all the bells and whistles and just enjoy some chocolate. It all comes down to the antioxidants and flavanols that chocolate contains, which are beneficial compounds found in high concentrations in some foods, including chocolates and wines.

For starters, it’ll improve your shortterm memory and brain performance. And that’s not all: for several hours after chewing, you’ll have reduced appetite and food cravings (especially those of the dangerous snack and dessert varieties). Essentially, you’re fooling yourself. If you’re chewing, your body thinks it’s taking in nutrients.

4 POP COR N LOW ERS CAN CER RIS K

A classic movie theatre junk food might actually save your life. Popcorn is loaded with antioxidants called polyphenols. Polyphenols are known to reduce cancer risk and other things like heart disease. One serving of popcorn has more polyphenols than a whole day’s worth of fruit and vegetables. Of course, the gallon of processed butter is perhaps less than fantastic for you, so the drier your popcorn the better, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw taste out the window. And when you throw in the fact that the flavanols in chocolate improve muscle function and regeneration, you might ease up on that ridiculous home video workout routine you’re killing yourself with and run to the grocery store instead.

5 CHI LI PEP PERS REL IEV E ACH ES

How about chili peppers? They aren’t junk food, but they’re certainly not considered diet food (unless you count the possible food-related PTSD your tongue will get after consuming one too many). What secret health benefit are they hiding from you? Some varieties of chili contain more vitamin C per pound than the hallowed king of the vitamin world: oranges. And though it seems counterintuitive, the ancient Mayans ate chilies to cure stomach-aches.

3 GU M IS BRA IN FOO D

All right, we’ve improved on stomachache cures, but did you know chili peppers are still used in medical applications today? You don’t eat them; you smear them on your skin. Chilies are commonly used in ointments and creams for muscular aches. If you’ve ever handled chilies and then rubbed your eyes or touched any other sensitive areas, you know that stuff can burn. Well, in ointments, the chilies are used to help create that “deep heating” feeling. (You still may want to avoid those sensitive areas.)

Most people view chewing gum as little more than a treat. You probably don’t even realize you need gum until you’re puckering up for that all-important first kiss (and even then you have to figure out how to quietly swallow it at the last second anyway).

MACKEREL ON TOAST WITH CUCUMBER AND HORSERADISH

Page 36

JULY 2013 - issue (30)

For a light meal on a summers day the combination of fresh mackerel, horseradish and cooling cucumber works brilliantly both as a mid day snack or as a started for a main meal.

Preparation and cooking times Prep time: Less than 1 hour Cook time: 10 mins

Ingredients

Image @ videojug.com

Half a cucumber, peeled, thinly sliced 4 tbsp grated fresh horseradish 2 heaped tablespoon crème fraîche 2 tsp English mustard powder 4 fresh mackerel fillets salt and freshly ground black pepper knob of butter To serve 4 slices soda bread, toasted, buttered or any toasted bread of your choice 1 small red onion, thinly sliced ½ small lemon Serves 4

To start slice your cucumber into thin slices and place them into a colander. Sprinkle with some salt and mix well, leave them on the side to drain for about 30 mins. Now rinse all the salt off of the cucumber with cold running water and again leave them to drain for a 10-15 mins, after that if you feel they are still a bit wet gently wring out the surface moisture with your hands and set aside for use.

Image @ theskinnydollsjourney.blogspot..com

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty...

Grab a new bowl and combine your horseradish, crème fraîche and mustard powder make sure the mustard powder is pretty well mixed and there are no lumps etc. Stick to the side with your cucumber. With you salt and black pepper season your mackerel fillets on their skin side.

Now to the mackerel….. In a suitable frying pan heat your butter until it is frothing, add the fillets skin-side down and stick a heatproof plate on top of them to help them cook evenly and keep them flat. Cook them for about 5 minutes, or until they appear almost completely cooked through, turn them over and quickly sear on the other side for just 30 seconds or so until you are happy that they are cooked through and remove them from the pan.

Image @ guyawford.com

Get your toaster ready and chosen bread and if your toaster takes ages to toast like mine does stick it on toast just now, otherwise leave it until you’ve started cooking your fish and then stick it in with a couple of minutes to go.

With your fish done grab a handful of your cucumber and place it on your freshly maid toast. Now stick the cooked mackerel on top, finish with a large scoop of your horseradish sauce and garnish on top with a wee bit of sliced red onion and complete your masterpiece with a squeeze of lemon as desired.

SPICY LAMB BURGERS

Image @ blogs.kqed.org

with coriander, tomato and yoghurt relish

With summer now on us for real burgers are always a big favourite but at GoGuide were looking at an alternative to your typical beef burger and going for an amazing Spicy Lamb Burger with a tomato relish.

Preparation and cooking times Prep time: Less than 1 hour Cook time: 10-30 mins

Ingredients 1kg/2¼lb minced lamb (use normal mince and not any lean stuff as the fat, on this occasion, is good and will help hold your creations together and keeps them moist during cooked) 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 finely chopped medium onion, (although I like mine a bit chunkier) 1-2 tbsp mango chutney 3cm/1¼in piece of fresh, peeled and grated ginger 1 red chilli, chopped and de-seeded ¼ tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed 1 tsp crushed cumin seeds, crushed Flaked sea salt. Freshly ground black pepper A wee bit of oil, for brushing Burger buns, flat bread or some pitta bread

Relish

6 ripe tomatoes, de-seeded and diced 200g/7oz of Greek yoghurt Some roughly chopped fresh coriander 1 small finely chopped red onion lemon or lime juice

Image @ eatandrelish.com

Burgers

Serves 6-10

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... Take you minced lamb and throw it in the biggest mixing bowl you have (its going to get messy), throw in all the other ingredients: the garlic, onion, mango chutney, ginger, chopped chilli, turmeric, crushed coriander and cumin. Put in a good bit of seasoning with the salt and pepper and now for the good bit…. mix by hand until the mixture is well combined though each other. You can if your worried about you nails or something (Christine?) briefly mix them in a food processor but only until they are barely starting to hold together, it’s super easy to go too far and over-work the mixture when machines are involved. There should be enough of the mixture to make a good 8-10 normal sized burgers or half a dozen large ones so choose which you prefer. If you haven’t made the recipe before and want to try out the flavour before you finish off try frying a small meatball sized Page 38

JULY 2013 - issue (30)

dollop of the mixture in some oil and taste, add extra flavourings or seasoning if needed . When you’re happy they taste amazing shape the mixture into your desired qty of burgers. Using a cling film-covered tray place the burgers away from each other so they don’t stick together and throw them in the fridge to let them relax for at least 30 minutes. For best results make them the day before and leave in the fridge until needed. When it comes time to cook them try brushing them with a little of the oil before sticking them on the barbecuing. Use with a medium-hot heat for about 5-6 minutes each side or until your happy they are cooked through. For the relish mix together all the tomatoes, yoghurt, coriander, onion and lemon or lime juice as preferred and season to your preferred taste with the salt and pepper. Stick in a big bowl and serve with the burgers, buns, bread or pittas

DESERT

PECAN PIE I love a Pecan Pie, they taste amazing and are just about right for a summer meal as they are not too light but definitely not to filling.

Preparation and cooking times Prep time: 30 Mins Cook time: 1-2 Hours

Ingredients

Image @ tishboyle.blogspot.com

110g/4oz unsalted butter 110g/4oz golden syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract 225g/8oz brown sugar 3 eggs. 1 x 245g/8½oz shortcrust pastry case 285g/10oz pecan nuts, halved Serves 6-8

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... First off get your oven on and preheat to 180C/350F. On your hob stick a ring on a low heat with a heavy based saucepan when the pan is warm mix your butter, golden syrup, vanilla extract and sugar. Wait for the butter to melt then take the pan off the heat and leave it to cool down for about 5-10 minutes. Beat your eggs in a bowl and when the previous mixture is cool chuck it in and stir well. Separate a few of the pecan nuts for final decoration and cut the remaining nuts into halves and arrange them evenly across your pastry case. Carefully pour over the mixture made earlier. Place into your preheated oven for 40-50 minutes – when done the pie should look golden-brown, but the filling should always remain slightly soft and spongy. Remove from the oven and place it on a wire tray to cool. When it’s cool enough and just before it fully sets place your pecan halves you kept from earlier over the top in whatever fancy design your little heart desires, I just tossed mine on in a wonderful array of random pecan goodness. ;-). Serve sliced with some double cream, whipped or otherwise or some good quality icecream. JULY 2013 - issue (30)

C

andy Crush Saga creators King have launched their latest mobile game, Pet Rescue Saga.

Much like their other games, PRS is basically a blockdestroying puzzle game where you tap on blocks to destroy as many blocks of the same colours as possible in the process, tapping a single blocks will destroy it but getting rid of a whole column will cause all the blocks to shift to the left. It is this shifting that is the secret to the game. As you progress obstructions placed in your way will start to separate your blocks from each other. So... getting your blocks to a point where they can reach the stranded blocks becomes the real challenge. The game kicks you off with 72 challenging levels and doing well on a level as usual gets you a better score and in this case three stars is your reward. In some levels we also see some featured pets that you must get to the bottom of the screen in order to complete the level with maximum points. There are power-ups that you can purchase to help you achieve tasks and make your chances of success a little easier. You can use pickaxes for getting rid of single blocks, colour pops can kill off all blocks of one colour and there is even a super rocket power-up which you earn and charge up while you’re playing which when unleashed heads off and clears an entire line completely. As usual there’s full Facebook connectivity that allows you to play for high scores etc.

amera 2 is perhaps to most just another camera app with a bunch of cool or wacky filters for you to throw over the top where you can make you pics look like they were taken with a camera from a century ago or with your kid’s toy camera, the list goes on. There are a few however that produce a bunch of well thought out, cool, and unobtrusive filters that have went a long way to making your images really stand out and are fun user. Instagram being one but Paper Camera stands out among that group as well and follow up Camera 2, expands on its little brother and adds a whole host of useable tools to make your pics truly pop. Sure there are the typical more brash and gimmicky type effects available but by far the majority of filters come across as really interesting. Retro type filters help make your pics look like they were taken from various decades over the past century along with some nice comic and sci-fi filters on offer. Another cool feature is that Camera 2 supports filters for both still images and for short videos. Throw in an extremely cool, friendly and smooth user interface and the guys seem to be onto a real winner. Something i really liked was the ability to see my effects applied when just viewing the subject matter, with a live sample of what your pic will look like, cycling through the filters in each category is easily done by just swiping left or right. Throwing up this multiple effect previews really does brings Camera 2 so much more above all the others out there at the moment that it really is worth the small cost to but it does look for a NEON instruction set, which hopefully your device will have as most modern phones and tablets do already but just thought I’d mention it.

pp Gratis is a cool wee app that allows you to download FREE apps and games that it recommends to you on a daily basis.

Although, you are getting these games offered to you for free it doesn’t mean that the quality of the game has decreased. They are the same games as the paid version with all the same features, graphics and sound. You’ll easily work out that App Gratis is probably getting paid by the boat load to ‘recommend’ these games to you but if in the end you are getting quality games for FREE then I’m happy for all parties to benefit the developers get their product promoted, App Gratis get their payday and i get FREE apps... everyone’s a winner.... well... maybe not? How does Apple feel about it? Well, App Gratis has actually run into problems with Apple on more than one occasion in the past and to be honest by the time this review comes out i’m not sure if it will be in or out of Apple Store. Apple claim that App Gratis infringes on their own store by offering normally paid items for free, its a bit more complicated than that and touches on the fact that App Gratis is nothing more than a store within a store type scenario. Anyway they have been in and out for a while now and the latest claim is that App Gratis have been offering their services to developers quoting premium fees that would potentially ‘guarantee’ them hitting the top 5 on Apple Stores charts. Now i think that its a fine line between what App Gratis do and what every other advertising firm does every minute of every day and Apple should just get on with what they are supposed to be good at and stop moaning about apps developers, Samsung, HTC and anyone else they think is ‘stealing’ from them.

here are way too many apps that seem to be all about the ‘look’ and less about gameplay. On the other hand some games look pretty pathetic but end up being amazingly addictive. Every now and again someone gets things just right and Badlands is just one of those. Having received praise from every quarter when it was initially released on iOS for iPhone and iPad we wanted to check how well it really plays. Having tested for a while on an iPad with its great display it actually makes the colours and silhoutte shapes within the game look great. In fact over all everything about the game looks great. Simplicity is the name of the hame here and it actually is pretty reminiscent of some old style Mario gameplay. Basically you touch the screen and cause your floating furry blob to move up or down and guide it through the Badland levels. As you travel through the levels all sorts baddies will crop up to spoil your fun. Some will slow you to a crawl while others will advance you forward. Glowing blobs will cause your character to grow or reduce in size, the bigger you are, the heavier you become forcing you to keep your finger pressed to the screen for longer so you fly higher. The app has a four-player mode, where everyone shares then same device but there are only 12 levels to play. The single player version has 40 for you to enjoy. The underlying feel of the game is of a very much its physics and I’m sure, like me you’ll fall right into its trap and won’t be able to put it down.

Movement - The ability to move the body through the pillars of movement in a multi directional plane It is important that you as a fighter understand the needs of strength in your movement patterns, this will ensure that you are prepared for any situation thrown at you. Let’s have a quick look at the five pillars of functional human movement which is a natural

Locomotion - crawl, walk, run, swim Rotation - swing, strike (any form of twisting action) In order to achieve greater strength in movement of any type we need to add a variable such as a weight to ensure that we have some form of resistance to work against We have found a sandbag is one of the best counter balance for promoting strength and movement functionally.

MAN OF STEEL

Natasha Orme for GoGuide Magazine Movie & DVD Reviewer

Y

ou may have read one of my earlier articles about the remakes and reboots of the modern film industry. If you have then you’ll be aware of my negativity on the matter. Superman is a favourite in our household, going back to when my other half was a little boy, he’s been fascinated with him ever since, so you can imagine the excitement when news of Man of Steel reached us. As geeky as it may seem, we knew about the release of this film, what, five months ago? It was ages. It seemed it would never be released with the amount of waiting time we had to do, but as everything does, the day finally arrived where we were booked into the IMAX with the best seats in the house. Now I’ve been doing a bit of catching up with the Superman franchise, watching all the Christopher Reeve originals, and for an old film, I’d say it’s amazing, priceless. So having said that you can guess that Man of Steel had a lot to live up to and I’m sure Superman fans all over the world would agree with me. Enough of my waffling and down to business! Henry Cavill was under a lot of pressure to match up to Christopher Reeves . Although it seems that Cavill has appeared out of nowhere, he has in fact been on the acting scene for quite a while, starring in the family favourite Stardust (2007). It’s probably safe to say he’s not going to be leaving the limelight any time soon. Where was I? Yes, Cavill’s acting. Outstanding. You know all those magazine and television adverts that

use just one word to describe a five star performance? Apply them here: Outstanding, Fantastic, Breathtaking, Amazing, Stunning, Superb. Cavill was one of a kind, that’s for sure. After recently seeing Star Trek: Into Darkness (and loving it! – you may have read my review on that one) I found that the director, Zack Snyder (Watchmen (2009)), had taken on quite a sci-fi view of Krypton. I’m not saying this was a bad thing, just surprising but delightful. There was none of the tacky one-room in tin foil effect that was in the original films, instead we actually begin to see the whole lifestyle of an alien planet, including the technology. Amy Adams plays the famous Lois Lane and I couldn’t think of anyone better. Again this was someone who I recognised (she looks a lot like Nicole Kidman) but was perhaps an undiscovered talent and I was right, the only performance I’ve ever seen her in was Disney’s not-so-successful Enchanted (2007). But that doesn’t mean there’s no talent there. Mixed in with this undiscovered talent is Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner (I haven’t seen this guy around much lately so it was nice to see him in something this big). This just shows the amount of money that has gone into this production, and of course the special effects kinda speak for themselves. Being a writer myself, I always try to give credit t the writers of whatever film I’m reviewing, simply because they’re often forgotten and people don’t realise that it’s essentially the writers that make the film what it is. The story was created by David S. Goyer (This guy has done so much I’m surprised I didn’t already know him – The Blade Trilogy and The Batman Trilogoy (the new ones)) and Christopher Nolan (these guys have worked together before! - on the Batman Trilogy but he’s also done Inception). Now you may think, the story’s been done before so surely it can’t be that hard to make this one but realistically I think that makes it even harder. These two have been creative and original as possible whilst avoiding the cliché that everyone is familiar with and taking us down a slightly different route which is amazing and brilliant. I didn’t see it coming and my goodness was it fantastic. This film is action packed and unique. It starts from the very beginning and gives us a taste of what it was like for Clark as a boy. We learn of him in school, when he discovers his powers and his journey to Metropolis where he finally becomes Superman and of course where he becomes an employee of the Daily Planet. I’d recommend this film for anyone who is a Superman fan and simply for anyone who wants a good film to watch. There are so many influences from other films over the years that it’s nice to sit and spot them but I can guarantee that you’ll be taken on a non-stop entertainment ride. Now enough of me waffling on – go and book your cinema tickets while you still can because this film is just incredible!

DESPICABLE ME VS FEATURE

I

n 2010, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment brought us Despicable Me. Making over £3.5 million in its opening weekend, it’s safe to say it was a success and you might be wondering why. All films have a hero – the main character. And in most films we love them. In this film, our main character was a villain. Might sound pretty horrible but he was loveable, hilarious and terribly bad at being a villain. This is Gru (Steve Carrell; Evan Almighty). It’s not just Gru that makes this film amazing but his delightful little yellow minions that run around getting into trouble and speak a gobble-de-gook language. I can tell you now that they’re hilarious. You’ll recognise this style of humour if you’re a fan of The Lorax (2012) and Horton Hears a Who (2008) because their written by the same duo. It took me a while to discover Despicable Me and when I did, I instantly fell in love with it. The characters are beautifully animated with colourful personalities, including the three

Page 66

adorable girls. And the sentimentality that’s laced throughout the film really hits home for any family. The reason that this film is so great is that there’s something there for everyone. The parents can enjoy the humour in its full glory, the boys can love the villainy, the weapons, the super spy stuff and the girls can love Margo (Miranda Cosgrove; School of Rock), Agnes (Elsie Fisher) and Edith (Dana Gaier). After this film captured my heart, my excitement about a sequel was unexplainable. It’s clear that I wasn’t the only one: the opening weekend made over $82.5 million – so compared to film one it’s smashed the success rate but also compared to film one, it shows how well they’ve been done. I’m going to stop waffling about facts and get down to the heart of this review: There were moments in this film where I couldn’t physically catch my breath because it was so funny and I cannot wait until it’s released onto DVD, I may even pre-order it because this film is a definite must have and my shelf would be empty without this to sit next to number one. We meet the new agent Lucy (Kristen Wiig; How to Train Your Dragon) who teams up

JULY 2013 - issue (30)

with Gru to save the world. To beat a villain you need to think like a villain – so in comes Gru, the best of the best but now he’s a family man so things are a little tricky. What I loved most about this film was the fact that we see more of the minions, which is fantastic. And the plot has loads of twists and turns with hilarity thrown in just for good measure. But it’s not just the minions that make this film, it’s the sideline stories – Margo meets a boy and Gru is just not happy with that so you can imagine that sparks of a whole new world of funny. Sometimes I doubt whether a sequel can ever real match up to the popularity of the first one especially because more often than not a sequel just ruins it. There aren’t many films that have been done well enough to produce two fantastic films but here it is clear that we are watching the work of people that are a cut above the rest because this is just none stop entertainment from beginning to end and there is no way you can come away and tell me you didn’t laugh at least once! th

PURGE T

he Purge is a thrilling moral conundrum about an annual day in which all crime becomes legal for 12 hours. Starring Ethan Hawke as Kevin Bacon, a home security salesman who gains wealth through, and whole-heartedly endorses the Purge, the idea is to allow an outlet for humanity’s natural criminal desires, thus

Page 70

‘purging’ their need to be violent lunatics for the rest of the year. Set in a twisted future (2022), America has been successful in cutting the crime rate to a minimum, and thanks to sales of firearms and security (and the creepy mask store seems to be doing quite well too), the economy is prospering like never before. But are all these numbers worth the allowance of one night of murderous mayhem and horror? See?! It’s complex and layered... and stuff!

JULY 2013 - issue (30)

Being fortified in the family house and hoping to lay low until the end of the purge, the Bacon family stay hidden from the violent maniacs wandering the streets, until their geek-goth son allows entry of the house to a drifter pleading for sanctuary. The drifter, however, turns out to be the assassination target of a posh, twatty gang headed by a bastardized and strangleable Noel Fielding prototype. The family are given the option to sacrifice the innocent stranger to the group of masked maniacs and spare themselves any trouble.

E As the story progresses with a sharp gritty realism and looking-glass perspective, a series of almost brilliant twists takes the viewer deeper into the puzzle on the value of human life when weighed against the good of many. Ultimately, ‘The Purge’ is original and interesting, dark, mysterious and philosophical and is a rarely good example of the kind of systematic thinking which can cause problems for a progressive society. The moralities of man cannot be transmuted with statistics alone! Rebel! Fight the system! Smash something!! Burn the government!! Kill all students!!

T

he new ‘blockbuster’ summer zombie film World War Z is a rendition of the popular The new ‘blockbuster’ summer zombie film ‘World War Z’ is a rendition of the popular book by Max Brooks (‘author of the ‘Zombie Survival Guide (2003)’ and son of film director ‘Mel Brooks’) and can be described quite concisely as ‘yet another zombie film, this time starring Bradley Pitt’. After becoming one of the most popular and highly acclaimed movies of 2013 for its mix of expensively rendered human attack dogs and big budget, little imagination action sequences, ‘World War Z’ became so excessively advertised that I tried to escape to France, only to be confronted by a billion and one moving images of Brett Pitt’s expressionless head in ‘le metro’. Watching seems unavoidable. Sacre bleu! So with all the success and talk about the film, one would suspect there must be something to it, something new and exciting, original and groundbreaking!! Right? Perhaps America’s answer to the stunning ‘28 Days Later’!? Well not really. It’s just another zombie film with explosions and snarling and famous actors (actually 1 famous actor, ‘Bernard Pitt’) and unconvincing scenes of 1-man-army type heroism and nonsense! So there! But I still like it, and you may too, even though it is a film years behind it’s time, because it has the classic charm of ludicrous zombism combined with the desperate need to thrill and entertain. Even with Mr Pitt making the whole thing feel like a 2 hour long version of his recent tragic aftershave commercial (the premise being that it stinks so bad, even zombies won’t come near you and you’ll live to be styoopid another day), ‘WWZ’ features visually stunning renditions of a world gone mad, hoards of the undead making disgusting sounds and a haunting soundtrack by ‘Muse’ guitarist/ singer/songwriter/mouse Matt Bellamy, not to mention Brad being stabbed through the belly with a bit of plane. The whole thing is epically directed and Americanised by Marc Forster and will be available on DVD this September. So, that’s good I guess. B

ig Brother 2013, or BB14 if you prefer, kicked off last month and after a few weeks i think i can safely say that unless something miraculous happens it is clearly going to be one of the dullest seasons ever, ranking up there with BB4 the Cameron Stout season and BB9 the Rachel Rice season. Changes in the presenting team have made matters worse for Ch5 and an early canning of the hardcore fans fav the ‘live stream’. From an outsider viewpoint, and of course a fan of the show, CH5 really do seem to be struggling to know just how to cope with the show even though most of the failings are staring them in the face. For instance, who wants to watch a live feed at prime time weekday slot? When you’re competing against the best shows from all the other channels i don’t think a BB live feed is going to compete much and pull in a lot of viewers, do you? Now a midnight slot would be a different matter? New main show presenter Emma Willis is fine, I had high hopes for this ‘secrets and lies’ season with BB installing their very first ‘stooge actor’ as a supposed contestant in Irish postman Michael... but that soon fizzled away as BB production team seemed to throw the guy to the lions and made it pretty obvious to the other housemates from the start of the show that there was something just not quite right with the guy. In particular neurotic ex Detective Inspector Dan Neal (who always seems to be on the edge of a nervous breakdown to me) just wouldn’t let the idea go that Michael was an actor and pretty much crucified him with all the other HM’s throughout his time in the house. I would have liked BB to have kept Michaels task secret for a

Page 82

couple of weeks, then started to play their cards and things perhaps wouldn’t have seemed to obvious to everyone. I thought Michael did a great job though and was just unfortunate that Dan was in the house to harass him otherwise there is a good chance that he would have been fine and no-one would have been any the wiser. Dan has since moved on to others in the house who he ‘isn’t sure of’ and keeps up his ‘detecting’ by grilling and berating other HM’s at his will. Then there is Dan’s partner in crime Hazel, an Irish model, she’s not a catwalk model, but whatever you do don’t call her a ‘glamour model’, oh no... as that implies that she does ‘topless’ and she doesn’t... haha, well not at the moment anyway... give it a few weeks and that might just change when the ‘Nuts’ money hits the table. Hazel is just a wee bit flirty, which was fine when it was Dan she was flirting with, then when things started to go a little neurotic with Dan she literally switched over night to one of her other HM’s Daley, who until then had been pretty much invisible and is definitely ‘Punching well above his weight’, ironic really considering he’s a boxer. Overnight they now seem to be in love, can’t keep away from each other and are talking about moving in together... hahaha... she truly seems to be a wee bit of a ‘loose woman’ and to make matters worse our nice guy Daley actually has a real life girlfriend on the outside world. Well i say has, when of course i really mean HAD. One way or another I’m guessing they are done. So what about the others in this year’s motley bunch of wannabees? Well I’m really only looking at 2 saving graces this season and those are spoilt rich brat Gina and the enigma that is semi-playboy Dexter the others are pretty much blending in with the garish fixtures and fittings and would be as well not be there for the entertainment, emotion and drama that they bring to the shoe. In BB’s latest twist both Gina and Dexter were ‘fake’ evicted to a safe house where they live in luxury and watch every move of the house next door. A recipe for disaster after the same thing has been tried in a couple of other seasons with varying success. This year’s really does seem like a snooze fest with Dexter and Gina not really showing to b e the kind of people to be able to plan strategy well and stick to it. Gina having already blown a previous dastardly plan after having secretly watched other HM’s audition tapes with Wolfy and Jackie. Needles to say she blurted out what they had watched before the plan came to a head. Dexter has also faltered with a chance of power when he apparently ‘didn’t read’ the message attached to a tennis ball which he found in the garden. The message read ‘Dan is an actor’ and he either was so scared to read it in case BB punished him, or he did read it but couldn’t figure out the best way to use it against Dan. So really i don’t expect much to come out of their wee stint in the safe house and pretty sure anything they do reveal about what has went on in the house behind peoples backs will quickly be squashed by the bigger characters like Dan and Hazel while the sheep follow on obediently behind. Ok... Jackie and the twins have a wee scrapping of comedy value but there isn’t really any meat on the bones of any of them to be honest. Checkout the next few pages for a rundown of the 2013 HM’s....

is 28, single and a primary school sports coach, (never..!!!!) claims to be a ladies man but is just plain DULL and is, for me anyway, not really that good looking? Either blatantly lied to get on the show or is now blatantly lying to his HM’s about who/what type of person he is... you decide.

Charlie

Charlie Travers

Jackie

is a 26 year old that has struggled with a few demons in her short life and is apparently ‘seeing someone but may be single when he goes into the house’. She works as a receptionist and will have her mother Jackie for company as they will be the first mum/daughter team in the BB house. She says of herself that she is "bossy, stubborn and very often complex, extremely confrontational and aggressive", cheeky, naughty and playful Charlie apparently has a love/hate relationship with her mother and feels she doesn’t fit in with her family. (again, where is this girl, hiding in the store room?)

Jackie Travers

is a 59 year old divorcee dance instructor and mother to Charlie, Jackie has said that spending time with Charlie in a small confined space for any long periods will be challenging. Apparently (saying this an awful lot) a well-known dancer in the 70s Jackie thinks her best traits are that she is fun, honest, flamboyant, sensitive and compassionate.

Daley

Daley Ojuederie

Dan

is a 28 year old professional middleweight boxer who has been boxing for ten years without losing a fight. On entering the house Daley and his brother were placed into foster care when he was two, his brother is the most important person in his life because they have “been through everything together and have come out stronger”. Daley prides himself in his success with the ladies and has a current girlfriend (oh... you do remember that Daley?)

Dexter

Dan Neal

33, and gave up his job in CID to try his hand at a more ‘arty’ side of life. He describes himself as an all or nothing person and lives with his boyfriend in Essex. He came out when he was 23 and has a teenage son from a previous relationship. He has specialised in the child abuse area of the police for the past 4 years and told us that his best trait are his loyalty and the fact that he is always there for his friends. He describes himself as intuitive and thinks he can read people well.

Gina

Dexter Koh

28, single and bills himself as a Celebrity publicist... (yeh right!) Apparently a scouser but i would never have known? Dexter lists his jobs as including being a male escort, paparazzo, strip club manager, magician and celeb PR. He prides himself in being described as London’s highest paid male escort.

Gina Rio is a 24 year old socialite (is that a job?) who has a

rapper boyfriend on the outside and recently stayed in The Savoy hotel for six months with the bill picked up by her parents (wonder how much they paid for the BB slot?). One dubbed "the most spoilt girl in the country" by one paper Gina admits she spends money when she is mad, “If I’m angry I feel I deserve certain things," Page 84

JULY 2013 - issue (30)

She has never had a real job and instead lives off £10,000 per month pocket money from her mummy and daddy.

Hazel

Hazel O'Sullivan

is a 24 year old model from Ireland and lists herself as ‘recently single’ (yeh, i bet you are, maximise earning potential babe!) She wants to try to let everyone see that all models are “not as boring as Georgia Salpa” who she had a tabloid fight with. She says she always tries to get what she wants and can be pretty vindictive. Hazel can usually be found frequenting the VIP circles in Dublin and often manages to get herself ‘papped’ while draped over various celebrities. Despite hating the ‘glamour model’ tag she has actually previously posed topless. She describes her worst personality traits as, “I can be like a terrier sometimes – snappy and irritable”.

Jack and Joe

Jack and Joe Glenny

are 18 year old identical twins... (i would have said 58 year old twins the way they go on!), they are both single (there’s a surprise!) and work as supermarket checkout assistants (hmmm!) They share everything; friends, interests, moaning, bitching and even the same bedroom. “We’re funny, we’re friendly, and we’re fat”.

Sam

Sam Evans

is 23, Welsh, deaf, single and is a stockroom assistant, a cheeky chappy who has represented Great Britain and Wales as part of their deaf football teams. He loves to flirt, thinks of himself as Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses and is supposedly up for anything... (did they put the right guy in?)

Sophie

Sophie Lawrence

is 20 and has a boyfriend in the real world. She’s a dental nurse who says that she is feisty with gypsy roots and is an East End cockney. Having been brought up around the gypsy community, she sees herself as more of a tomboy rather than a “bimbo” because she likes physical activities like football and kickboxing.

So there you have it that’s BB14 housemates and for another 2 months or so these people will try, mostly in vain to get their other housemates and the public to like them enough to keep them in to the final and for one lucky puppy the ultimate prize as the 2013 winner. Unless something seriously interesting happens this will probably be the first and last feature on the show in the mag as quite frankly I’m boring myself writing about them. Until the next time..... BBC FOUR PICKS UP ‘PARKS AND RECREATION’ SEASON 3

B

BC Four has acquired the UK rights to the third season of Parks and Recreation.

Having recently aired the first two seasons of the The Office writing crew’s new US comedy show the BBC has now confirmed that they will also be showing season three sometime in 2014. Parks Season 3 took the show on to its first ‘Emmy’ nomination for 'Outstanding Comedy Series' and also star Amy Poehler, who plays Leslie Knope, getting her second Emmy nomination for 'Outstanding Comedy Actress'. The season also saw show regulars Rob Lowe (Chris Traeger) and Adam Scott (Ben Wyatt) become full blown cast members. In the US Parks and Recreation has been booked for six season by NBC, and it has been revealed that London will feature heavily in season six's premiere. The show will return to US screens in September.

JOHN HURT PLAYING ‘DARK DOCTOR’ IN DOCTOR WHO ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL He will slot in between McGann and Eccleston, according to reports

S

o it just might have been let out the bag exactly who John Hurt's character in the forthcoming 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary special will be.

After being seen briefly in the final episode of the last series in May, the British acting legend was simply addressed as 'the doctor'. However, sources on the set of the anniversary episode, well... actually one of the costume designers working on the show might have just revealed a little more details on ‘the doctor’. In a chat with the Daily Telegraph, Howard Burden made it known that the 'Alien' star would actually be seen as a 'dark Doctor'. “There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration,” he said. “And John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.” Pictures from on the set of the 50th show have been emerging online for a wee while now and in some of those Hurt seemed to be wearing a leather coat which was similar to the one worn by the Christopher Eccleston's version of the Dr. The episode, thought to be titled 'An Adventure in Time and Space', will also see former Dr David Tennant making his return and is set to hit UK screens on November 23 on BBC1.

SEASON 4 SNEAK PEEK

Page 88

**MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS** JULY 2013 - issue (30)

S off.

eason 3 of The Walking Dead has come and gone and for most is a long off distant memory and I for one can’t wait for season 4 to kick

I just can’t stand not knowing what ghastly fate potentially awaits the characters I’ve grown to love over the past 3 seasons, even the bad guys, but definitely not that wee shit that is ‘The Governor’… he can rot in hell when his time comes…. Rather surprisingly, and unlike the ending of season 2, season 3 left us with a slight sense of hopefulness after Rick and the others were seen welcoming the citizens of Woodbury into the heart of their camp, the prison they are so weary to leave. So really there wasn’t any clues as to the horror awaiting The Walking Dead in season 4. Robert Kirkman, the comic’s creator, talked about the season 3 finale and the possible fate awaiting the characters in the time ahead as well as just what fans might expect to see from the motley crew of survivors in the light of a possible first real chance to form a growing community in the prison. “There’s some really, really cool and big stuff that people have been expecting, or that people have been anticipating from the comics, that will work into Season 4. To give a hint, I will say that we do have Tyreese and Rick, who are now united, which is a big moment for the comic book fans. There’s a lot of story that comes from those two guys being on the same side. We’ll possibly see a bit of that in Season 4”, said Kirkman. Kirkman also talked about how Rick’s dealings with the Governor and what he created at Woodbury has forced Rick to maybe re-think certain ideas on how to survive the zombie filled world. “It’s going to be different in a lot of ways. We’ll see a very different Rick Grimes for one. His experiences against the Governor and with the various things that happened to him in season three are informing his character in huge ways. We’ll see a lot of familiar elements from season three: we’ll see the prison, Rick and his group are still in the same place but those elements are all going to be radically different. I can’t really get into it but season four is going to be extremely different than season three in some very startling and cool ways. This is the moment where Rick takes a turn; he’s no longer going to be pushing people away, he’s no longer going to be doing whatever he can to protect these people in ways that hurt other people. He’s not going to be the guy who would leave that guy on the side of the road — the backpack guy in Episode 12. He’s letting the people of Woodbury in and trying to tell Carl that these people are like us, you have to be open to this and the only way to survive in this world is to have people and be in a community. That’s going to be a big part of season four.” The role of Rick’s son Carl has shifted massively over the seasons and is now seen as a child soldier, with some adverse results.

“Rick’s got his work cut out for him. He’s aware of this and he sees what allowing his son to become a child soldier has brought, which is a very big part of Season 4. Moving forward in the show, this is a guy who’s working as hard as he can to maintain a life for this child. [In] the process of surviving… he’s allowed his son to lose a pretty substantial piece of his humanity. It’s now a question of: Is there going back? Is this now status quo? These are the things that a father will have to deal with.” At the end of ‘Welcome to the Tombs,’ Rick welcomed Tyreese, Sasha and the people of Woodbury in to their prison sanctuary. Some have asked why the decision was made for them to remain in the prison as opposed to moving everyone to the relatively normality of the Woodbury camp? “They see the prison as something that is much more easily defended than Woodbury. They were able to get into Woodbury easily themselves. The Woodbury defences are very effective against zombies, but not very effective against humans. They see [the prison] as much more of a defensible position.” As to whether they remain in the prison, Kirkman had this to say. “There’s always going to be new locations and new places to discover and explore. I don’t want to reveal too much; Season 4 is still five months away. But I will say that as we see at the end of Season 3 we’re definitely going to start Season 4 at the prison. We may be there the whole season and we may not be… But there are going to be some big differences from Season 3.” Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine Contributor

he Incredible Burt Wonderstone is a story about 2 young wimps who grow up under the influence of magic and charlatanry, resulting on them becoming famous stage magicians in Vegas. Burt (played by Steve ‘hilarious nose’ Carrell) has a diminishing act with his partner Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) and find themselves being phased out of the entertainment racket. The pair have been putting on the same lame and cheesy show night after night and suddenly find themselves performing exclusively for elderly casino fodder and empty seats. At this point, magnificent street magician and orang-utan extrapolation Steve Gray (Jim Carrey) moves in to take the spotlight, the fame, the money and everything else Burt and Anton hold dear. After failing to keep up with demand in the magic market and making a great colourful numpty of himself, Burt finds his ego-driven, luxurious world crumbling beneath him. His last hope is to overcome his pride, belligerence, outlook, his clothes, his attitude, his love for dancing, his awful cry, his lack of talent, zero popularity, charisma or likeability AND his face, to regain the rank of Vegas’ top magician. The film is a wacky buddy comedy featuring the inevitable falling out, trying to make it alone and finally realising that they need each other more than the sun needs the sky, and we can all learn to love and be friends. It becomes apparent that the writers never intended to create something new or genuine (and why should they for a cost of only $30 million?) and although critiqued widely for its predictability, people are sure to love watching Jim Carrey behave like a super-sadomasochistic Chris Angel (a-docious). Perhaps the overtones of mocking institutionalised entertainment becomes the main theme of the piece and is even intentional in the story telling, a bite back at the hand that films! … But most likely not. ark Skies is a recently released thriller/horror from the makers of ‘Paranormal Activity’ about an average American family being plagued by ghosts or witches or something dreadful. It stars terror faced actress Keri Russell and worry-eyed Josh Hamilton as Lacy and Daniel Barret, a young couple trying to deal with financial uncertainty, a disturbed child and a faulty home security system, all whilst being tormented by an unseen vegetarian foe. The movie begins by pigeon-holing the main characters into easily relatable, potential victims. There’s the caring but thick husband, the concerned but panicky wife, the creepy bowlcut son and the even younger creepy bowl-cut son. Despite being the ancestors of ‘The Beatles’, the Barret family live a normal life in a quiet American suburb surrounded by nosey neighbours, until their home becomes something of a magnet for Al Qaida birds and extra-terrestrial architectural burgling hypnotist surveillance disruption coordinators from Neptune. At this point, the parents decide to bring in a familiar face, brilliant actor and toe-look-a-like J.K.Simmons to rid them of the alien invaders. J.K.Rowling (Sorry, that should be *SIMMONS*) plays the role with eerie gusto bringing much needed feeling to the over-used silent gaps in the film. Personally I find it hard to take him seriously as I keep remembering his face from extract (a great film by Mike Judge). The fear factor of the movie relies heavily on the capacity to make people jump from their skin using a mix of loud, surprising noises amongst too-quiet dialogue and prolonged scenes of over-dramatized regular household tedium. It is a suspense builder, which is always fun (although it hasn’t actually fooled anyone into letting their guard down since 1986). Summarily, ‘Dark Skies’, while cliché and cheesy, provides the intended creeping out promised, although ‘Mama’ would have to take the cake for this year’s dark suspense horror. ….’mmm dark horror cake, URRGHHRGHHRGHH!

love this film! It’s definitely a great one for Christmas and even better one for all those singletons out there!

Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz; What Happens in Vegas(2008)) and Iris Simpkins (Kate Winslet; Titanic (1997)) are perfect examples of lonely women with desperate love-lives. In a bid to escape from the heartbreak and humiliation they house-swap. But this is no regular house-swap. Amanada lives in a mansion in LA and Iris lives in chocolate-box cottage in a remote part of Surrey. This provides the perfect set up for both of them to get away from men! Every girls dream after a hard time with guys. But things aren’t that simple, otherwise there’d be no film! Iris meets Miles (Jack Black; Kung Fu Panda (2008)) who is a film composer and fall in love whilst Amanda meets Iris’ brother Graham (Jude Law; Gattaca (1997)) and guess what? That’s right, they fall in love too! This is a fantastic feel good film all about girls rediscovering who they are away from the men that are meddling in their lives. Feeling down? Then stick this on. I can guarantee you’ll be feeling better by the end of it. And who can resist the temptation of a soppy Jude Law? I know I can’t – he’s to die for!

W

hen this film came out in 2005, there was not much of an uproar which is a shame because there should have been. I never say no to a cartoon film simply because it’s animated because sometimes you find that they’re the best. My favourite character in this film is by far Fender played by the legendary Robin Williams. Fender is simply hysterical mainly due to the fact that he’s falling apart and has a tendency to panic. Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor; Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002)) has big dreams. He wants to be an inventor just like Bigweld (Mel Brooks; Blazing Saddles (1974)) and so he sets of to the big city to show what he can do but it seems that there is a big wide world out there that Rodney doesn’t know about. On his way to Bigweld, Rodney meets Fender and is charmed by the eccentric and slightly weird outdated robot but they soon become firm friends in their bid to save all outdated robots from Madame Gasket (Jim Broadbent; Moulin Rouge (2001)). This film is great for the whole family. It has plenty of entertainment and humour with captivating characters in a cleverly designed world. What I love most is the way our everyday routines that we take for granted are translated into this robotic, mechanical world. You’ll find yourself giggling along at the silliness.

here’s always been an argument in geekland about who is best, Marvel or DC. Now the only thing both sides ever seem to agree on is that DC make the better animated films. I mean Marvel may hit you with a Planet Hulk now and then but DC constantly hit the mark. We could get into an argument here about other stuff but I’ll leave that for another day. What I will say is that The Dark Knight Returns part one was by far my favourite super hero film last year. Actually that undersells it, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns part 1 was the favourite film that was released last year. So yeah, you could say this film has a lot to live up to. For those of you unaware of part one, buy it before you watch this one. This isn’t the kind of thing you can just pick up and watch. Everything that happens in it is set up in part one. It’d be like jumping into Game of Thrones midway through season 2 and expecting to be able to follow it. The basic premise is Batman has retired, Jim Gordon is about to retire, a crazy gang called the mutants now runs Gotham, all the old bad guys are either dead, in Arkham, or rehabilitated. A now alcoholic Bruce Wayne decides he’s had enough and is out again fighting crime. Oh and a young teenage girl bumbles into becoming the new Robin. I could now go into what happens in part 2 but anything I can say would ruin the major moments of part one that made me giggle in crazy fanboy glee. This film definitely lives up to the first one. No time is wasted. The two films combined are pretty much the perfect graphic novel adaptation. Never have I watched a film and felt like it was perfect. This film is the perfect Batman film. Peter Weller is an outstanding choice to play a weary Batman who has had enough and refuses to sit on the side-lines anymore. Ariel Winter (Modern Family) is great as the innocent female Robin. Oh but I feel that I should warn you to watch this before you let your kids see it. It’s a 15 for a reason. One of the bad guys is a semi naked woman with Swastikas over her nipples, true story. But if you are in any way a fan of batman and have somehow missed this, you need to pick it up. Your life cannot be complete until you do.

I

t will alarm none of you to hear that I am a huge Stallone fan. I own over 30 of his films on DVD and was seriously disappointed to miss this one in the cinema. Especially when you consider the fact that it was directed by the legendary Walter Hill who made the classics 48Hrs and The Warriors. So I was always going to buy this. It’s a pretty decent film too. Unlike Schwarzenegger’s recent film The Last Stand this film is not filled with jokes. It’s a classic action film with the kind of classic action film moments that made Stallone a star in the first place. It doesn’t try to live up to modern day monstrosities like Fast Five with crazy set pieces stuck in the middle of a dodgy film in a vain attempt to make you go “Ooooooooooooh”. But an action film that just has action in it. You know, people shooting each other and kicking each other in the face. Is the film dated because of this, well probably, but this is the kind of action film I enjoy. Taken was a great film because Liam Neeson went round beating people up, and this is a great film because Stallone runs around beating people up. The story follows a hitman (Stallone) and DC cop in the wrong jurisdiction (Sung Kang) looking for the people who murdered their partners. Kang trying to do it on the side of the law and Stallone breaking it as often as possible much to the Kangs disdain. But it’s hard to do things on the right side of the law when the local police are clearly corrupt as all hell. It’s classic action movie territory and it is an outstanding film. It won’t be long until it’s cheaper than most magazines so if you’re a fan of classic ‘kick a guy in the face then shoot him’ action films then you should definitely pick this up.

et another animated film from DC is out this month. This time it’s the rather enjoyable Superman Unbound. For the comic fans of you out there it follows the recent Superman: Brainiac story in which Superman discovers the bottled city of Kandor inside Brainiacs space ship. A city with living Kryptonians inside that was taken moments before Kryptons destruction. Inside it also contains Supergirls parents. So she’s here too. Outstanding. Brainiac has always been one of my favourite Superman bad guys and it’s great to see him be such a bad ass here. He completely bamboozles and beats the crap out of Supes on more than one occasion. But this is a guy who collects small parts of worlds, shrinks and then bottles them so he can feed on their knowledge and strength. As if it wasn’t bad enough to keep tiny prisoners he also blows up the sun near the planet after he’s taken them therefore destroying the world as he leaves. Total bad guy. This time he’s after Earth. Just as well we have Superman then really since apparently the Green Lanterns who normally deal with this kind of thing are nowhere to be seen. Well it is a Superman film after all. As with the other Superman animated films this doesn’t stick exactly to the graphic novel of the story, but it doesn’t drift too far either. It’s a good solid Superman film and if you’re a fan of the character you will find a lot to love in this film. Superman has a lot of haters though as seen with the recent (and outstanding) Man of Steel, if you’re one of them, don’t bother with this. But yet again DC have made a great animated film that can be watched by people of any age. It has a great cast including Stana Katic as Loius Lane and Molly C. Quinn as Supergirl from the outstanding T.V. series Castle. You can also pick up a rather good boxed set with an additional 4 Superman animated film including the phenomenal Superman Doomsday for just over a tenner. Bonus.

have put this in the movies you may have missed section as I had no idea it existed until I heard someone talking about it, on Facebook of all things. Good grief. But when I looked into it, I couldn’t not watch it. It’s a documentary following Tom, he has Fragile X which is an extreme form of autism, and his dream is to meet Lars Ulrich of Metallica. In this film his brother and sister decide to take him to America to meet Lars, but with his condition it’s something that was never going to be easy. You follow Tom through his anxiety, through his brother and sisters lack of knowledge of his condition which creates even more anxiety for both Tom and his siblings. I mean one of the first things they are told is that Tom needs a specific schedule and they have to do everything at the time they say they will or it will create a large amount of anxiety for him. First day and they’re late. I mean at one point it looks like they won’t even get out the country, never mind get to America, get to the gig and see the band. As you watch the film you get carried away with it. The frustration of both Tom and his siblings as they try to make this great thing happen but things are constantly thrown in the way due to Toms’ condition. The guy just shows an unbelievable strength to even be in a crowded room never mind a giant gig with thousands of crazy Metallica fans. I won’t ruin anything for you. I will just say that you have to see this film. Even if it’s just to understand how hard it is for someone with Autism or Fragile X to do things people take for granted. But I don’t want to get to preachy here. The film isn’t too preachy and I feel that by doing so I’d be doing it a huge injustice. Suffice to say the film is currently sitting at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes so it’s not just me telling you to see it. It’s a film that makes you feel good. Good about life, about the people around you. Not many films manage to do that these days.

aughty Dog, creators of the original Crash Bandicoot series and the critically acclaimed Uncharted series, have quite a reputation for making beautifully eccentric games that raises the bar for AAA titles, replacing the Hollywood blockbuster action with dirtier, grittier and emotional cut scenes, the Last of Us carries on that great legacy, in fact it could even be the greatest game of this decade. Exploring this post-apocalyptic world, The Last of Us illustrates a world where nature has retaken over the land and cities, thanks to an epidemic caused by Ophiocordyceps, a parasitoidal fungus that only effects insects but in the game tells the tale of a ‘what if’ this fungus parasite transferred over to humans. You play as Joel, a 20 year veteran of the apocalypse tasked with a seemingly impossible journey to cross the demanding and dangerous new landscape from Boston to across America. The characters are so incredibly well done and defined you instantly like both good and bad characters. Most importantly the relationship between Joel and Ellie may have been done before but never as well done as this time, with Ellie, the young loud mouth, swearing, hot head, without falling into cliché, and Joel, the gruffy reluctant counterpart. Fans of the Uncharted series may well feel a familiarity with the combat part of the game. It is fluidly simple but effective and dynamic. Swinging strong blows and smashing the bad guys head into the environment can really show the desperation of survival to be downright brutal. Staying true to a world gone to hell, resources are limited and coming across ammo is scarce even with the occasional bad guys that go around dropping there loot, thus making you play through The Last of Us with strategic thought and vigilance rather than going in guns blazing. Progress can be aided greatly by Joel’s advanced hearing which can locate any enemy that’s being a tad loud. Combat wise things can shift perfectly from stealth takedowns on minute to all out carnage the next. When the infected are after you they swarm you, beating you to a pulp or killing you in one single bite. The plant people and cauliflower folk can range from the Runners, the standard type of infected creatures, to the grotesque Clickers and the overgrown Bloaters who will get you from a distance. The human bandits are just as malicious, finding ways to flank or rush you, shooting bullets and throwing Molotov’s which offers a complete different experience from fighting the infected. With resources rare you can use bricks and bottles to your advantage to get the upper edge on the enemy, lead pipes and baseball bats will enhance your melee combat until they breaks and shivs can be strategically used for quick takedowns or opening locked doors. Dispersing the enemy with Molotov’s or losing them in a cloud of smoke via smoke bombs may break the silence but will come in handy during the intense fighting, and spike bombs will rip anything that it encounters to shreds. By collecting scrap metal you can upgrade your weapons to reload quicker, add a scope to a rifle or even have a second holster. Supplements can be used to increase Joel’s survival abilities, from a simple health increase to countering a Clicker and gathering notes and such can show insight to how the occupants lifestyle during this Armageddon or lead you to hidden stashes. Some of the more atmospheric and emotive moments come from just exploration of the scenery, optional dialogues can be activated at certain points of the level and is mainly Joel reminiscing or explaining the past to Ellie. These moments

won’t just happen by going from point A to point B so a need for exploration is essential. Each level is robust and vast in its own way, with some accessible side buildings that you can ransack for loot. With all its perks and tons of brilliant features there are some flaws… yes there are some downsides to The Last of Us. First of all the AI can be horrendous at times, one of my pet hates with games is that enemy AI are only after you and respond to no one else, the enemy AI in the Last of Us could walk in front of Ellie or any other teammate that’s with you and just ignore them. Probably the worst is the Ally AI as they can ruin any type tension, I won’t say they can ruin the sneaking because they can’t actually get caught but the fact that they would run directly in front of an enemy withy no reaction can be a real let-down. The fact that you seemingly don’t actually have to protect anyone, other than being in combat, sort of distances itself from the theme of the game. And then there’s the blocking the way out of a room issue as well, they will eventually move after you’ve sprinted at them for a bit. And this might be just me but Joel’s hearing mechanic that allows the player to see through walls can potentially be a bit overpowered. The multiplayer feature isn’t something the game will be remembered for, although some people do find it rather fun and it does offer some interesting features. For me it’s a swing and a miss though, Naughty Dog tries to convey a more tactical approach to online rather than running and gunning, but the thing is NOBODY DOES IT, they run and gun anyway. With multiplayer you can choose between the bandit faction and the fireflies and pursue in Supply Raids and Survival modes. Supply Raid is just a fancy cover up for a team deathmatch mode with limited respawnes while Raid is where you have life throughout the game. The overall feel doesn’t quite match up to other Naughty Dog title Uncharted’s multiplayer action but most players will probably try it out at least once while others will try and get their friends in on the action. Overall though, The Last of Us completely makes up for any these issues, the breath-taking story could have you producing tears and leave you wanting more, possibly the last hooray for this generation on PS3, The Last of Us is full of sorrow and elation and will leave you desperate on playing to the end.

emember Me is set in beautifully designed Neo-Paris, with its classical architecture contrasting with the futuristic holographic advertisements and neon lights. Governed by a brainwashing state that manipulates and deceives the public. You play as Nilin, a memory hunter suffering from amnesia who seems to treat this beautiful but daft world with some seriousness. You’ll work to bring down the government by jumping across rooftops, sneaking through buildings, fighting bad guys and rewriting memories. Then there’s the rapidly growing underclass of memory junkies whose brains are so distorted by memory writes and rewrites that somehow they’ve transformed into violent Gollum-like mutants that can turn invisible and stick to walls. Probably the one thing you will take away with you if you ever play Remember Me will be its memory remix process. You will view a scene first, watching what happens, and then looking back and forth through the clip searching for opportunities to mess with the subject’s mind. It is restrictive to a creative mind but it’s still interesting and fulfilling to play as some sort of memory poltergeist, going through different variation to alter the scene while predicting what will change. The combat to me is reminiscent to the old Spider-Man games with its flashy fighting animations utilising timed dodges. You can also create custom combos by placing punches and kicks into linear combos with even a SingStar style timing mechanic that tells you specifically when to strike in order to complete the combo, each strike color-coded to indicate increased damage, health regeneration, or sped-up access to special abilities. It only really adds a minor strategic angle but is also fun to play with. With enemies having a tendency to cluster around you, and it can be difficult to make Nilin focus a combo at one opponent. Eventually you gain a gauntlet that blasts single targets away from the pack so you can beat them up and build focus. Focus can be spent to power special attacks that stick a target with a crowd-wrecking logic bomb or hack a robot to attack its allies which proves useful when encountering tougher groups of enemies. Ironically if you die before reaching a checkpoint any adjustments you made to your combo’s will be forgotten, which is annoying if you spent a good few minutes creating specific combos. You also might find yourself creating rather weak combos; this is because if you rack up a 6 hit-combo you gain bonus points to buy new attacks. Also after defeating one enemy it will cancel out your current combo therefore making it unavailable to continue the combo on another enemy making fighting a cluster of enemies just a mess. The inability of Remember Me to maintain momentum and hold the player’s interest is the most obvious symptom that the game can’t quite clear the high bar it sets for itself. There are also numerous minor issues and inconsistencies along the way holding it back. Remember Me may seem a bit uneasy at times but at least it makes an effort at creating an action-adventure game, with classic fights against overgrown bad guys and huge robots, to lengthy environmental puzzles and follow-the-leader sequences called ‘Remembranes’. Also memory remixes could be improved on a lot more as it is a fantastic idea. Remember Me might seem a tad old school but is a curious and ambitious game.

s I’ve said before Resident Evil has evolved from being slow-paced but still enticing horror game too to an all-out fast paced action horror/survival game to appeal to a bigger audience but yet it still manages to capture in its mutated grip. Although Revelations was good on the 3DS will its carryover to the console flourish? While Revelations was good on the 3DS its still left some traces for the console version, you can immediately tell with the overall control of the game that it was made for a handheld device, but does benefit from being on a bigger screen and a separate controller. If you haven’t played Revelations before the majority of the gameplay will take place on a massive ship while controlling Jill Valentine

and her partner Parker Luciani are searching for Chris Redfield and Jessica Sherawat and its not long before you realise everything is not what it appears to be. The story continues episodically, like fellow survival horror Alan Wake, cuts back and forth chronologically and taking control of some of the other B.S.A.A main characters and switching up scenery from time to time. The controls could be reminiscent of the old Resident Evil thanks to the 3DS while adding in the action from Resident Evil 5 and 6. While exploring this decimated ship it is full of gore and violence with enough to make you go ew! The atmosphere does seem to emphasis more on the action of taking down a large group of enemies mutated with the deadly T-Virus. But the action isn’t all that good, it’s pretty much get from point A – to point B, through interconnected rooms and corridors while taking on hoards of the same dreary enemy for an inexplicably long time. You’re also stuck with a partner that doesn’t really add anything other than the occasional JULY 2013 - issue (30)

witty remark to break the immersion. They don’t get in the way or fall behind unlike every other game but they also don’t help at all, they to stand back and watch while you get your ass handed to you by swarm of monsters. The Raid mode can allow you to play online with a friend to take on swarms of enemies while seeing who can rack up the highest scores. Varieties of characters and weapons can be unlocked (even more characters than on the 3DS version) and a statistics system will allow you to carry more powerful guns with visible damage numbers appearing on the enemy while random loot and upgrades will appear throughout the map. Overall Resident Evil: Revelations is pretty much the same as the 3DS with slightly better graphics, more Raid mode characters and an even tougher difficulty setting. Not a bad game with some feelings from the old Resident Evil games mixing up with the new style action.

est Side Story is a 1961 American musical film directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. The film is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. It stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris and it was photographed by Daniel L. Fapp, A.S.C., in Panavision 70. Two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff’s best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo’s younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what’s happened, tragedy strikes and doesn’t stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.
