amage Inc. is a 4 piece band of hairy heavy metal heads from Livingston built upon the vision of modern ultra-psycho B.Ramage. Chunky tones, finger torturing riffage and head banging rhythmes are abundant in their latest album ‘Feel the waves (2013)’. Ramage Inc have released two other albums and played sold out shows across the UK. Currently, they are gearing up for ‘Upload Fest’, a massive heavy metal festival in Dundee on June 1st with many other big-name

Page 4

artists including international sensations ‘Bleed from Within’ and up and coming superstar sexpot’s ‘Exile the Traitor. Indeed, Ramage Inc can roll with the best of them, but what sets them apart from all the others you ask? It’s their pleasant listenablility. Honestly, how many extreme bands could you say that about? Yes, despite the constant aural bombardment of thundering drums, room shaking bass and furious distortion, Ramage Inc have such good production that you could fall asleep under a cow on a pile of jagged rocks whilst listening to them. What makes that fact even more impressive is that the music was produced entirely by Mr Ramage Radge Ramington himself.

JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

Bryan Ramage tells us, “I think the main ambition has always been to write and record music I wanted to listen to. I think people listen to a particular song or music style because it represents or emphasizes what they are feeling or the mood they are in. I struggle to find bands to listen to that can do this for me, so I started my own.” Obviously drawing influence from bands like Strapping Young Lad, Metallica and other ambient rock acts, Ramage Inc have carved themselves a smooth style that is technically proficient and melodic as ‘owt. The more I sit here and listen to their generously long 14 track album, the more I like it, and you will too, probably. www.ramageinc.bandcamp.com www.facebook.com/RamageInc

he experimental bass-head known as ‘MyOp1K’ is a dubstep/electro producer who has quickly made a place for himself within the West Lothian and surrounding music circles. With chunky beats and echoing hooks, he has secured himself a variety of shows with many successful acts. Starting out in 2012 and continuing to break through into 2013, MyOp1K has worked with radio stations and clubs across the country, dropping ‘mad bombs’ and ‘getting down’ at the ‘disco’, I imagine. Before moving on to Dj’ing, the one-man rave machine was playing bass in a group called ‘Fall and Perish’, a local heavy metal outfit (GOFFZ!) Influenced by such highly regarded bands as ‘Machine Head’ and ‘Metallica’. So why the sudden change? After beginning to produce his own tracks, MyOp1K (or Mr Craig Cumming) spawned a passion for electronic and house music, weaving up lengthy club mixes worthy of sponsorship by the international clothing company ‘Dead Legacy’. MyOp1K has had a multitude of live performances captured on camera, including one Glasgow show where he could be seen bobbing up and down like an angry bearded dragon behind a huge banner reading ‘I <3 house whores’. Classy! Still, the grinning maniac delivers the music with pazazz, brimming with beats that synchronize to your heart beat and send it racing before bringing it, and you, back down to this chilled out, beachgroove loving little earth of ours. Mr MyOp1K tells us that he, “decided to start this type of music because it’s all about the energy of performing live and I think electro house has a lot to offer. From metal/rock music to house or trance, if it sounds good to me I will like it.”

Truer words have never been spoken! AND, on top of that, he seems like a nice guy, so go listen, NOW! www.facebook.com/MyOp1K www.twitter.com/MyOp1K www.soundcloud.com/myop1k

his year GoGuide Magazine will be hosting our very own local 'GoGuide Grassroots Music, Art and Charity Spotlight' area at Party in the Park 2013, now that a bit of a mouthful so lets just call it the ‘GoGuide Stage’ from now on... cool? The plan for the GoGuide Stage is to fill the gap between the acoustic Youth Action Project hosted stage at the PITP and the Main Stage. Our goal is to concentrate on showcasing only 100% LOCAL Grassroots music and arts talent on the stage and the surrounding areas. We will feature LIVE bands, acoustic sessions and local DJ’s sets along with showcasing some stuff from local artists, photographers etc. Another part of the day will be to help bring awareness to some of the lesser known charities throughout the local area and Scotland in general and our chosen Showcase Charity for the event this year will be the Mental Health Foundation. It will no doubt prove to be a hectic day but in our guise of a local magazine we will be on hand to report on the day, take a few pics and film ALL the bands performances and like last year be carrying out our ‘trademark’ dodgy interviews throughout the day with all the local artists and anyone else of interest that pops up. Keep it real, keep it local, keep it LIVE.

Page 10

JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

We featured Bright Side a few months back but here’s our brand new music contributor Christopher Jordan’s take on the local 4 piece....

T SIDE T SIDE T SIDE ACCORDING TO CHRISTOPHER JORDAN was produced and released in conjunction with Glasgow based label ‘Thanks For Nothing Records’, the people responsible for other notable acts such as ‘Exile the Traitor’, ‘Set Astrey’ and ‘Heavy Hands’.

With a modern style built upon the shoulders of some old favourite acts such as ‘Bad Religion’ and the like, Bright Side have been preparing their sound to showcase across the UK and to scream in the face of anyone who dares/bothers listen. They remind me a little of protest the hero, except for the vocalist who, instead of sounding like he was plucked from a choir, sounds more like an enraged German child screaming at his ‘eltern’ for giving away a beloved childhood pet, something which can never be forgiven and

is in fact the basis of over 90% of the world’s hard rock band’s inspiring strife.

When asked what drives the music, their bass player Kev says, “We’re quite influenced by the band ‘Break Even’ being that out name comes from their album ‘The Bright Side’. But I would also say that we are influenced by all the music that each one of us is into, which ranges from pop punk to metal.” So there you have it! Another reason why West Lothian is one of the greatest places in the world along with New York, Beijing and Amsterdam. www.facebook.com/wearebrightsideuk

Picture-Perfect - Wedding Makeup Tips AVOID LAYERS OF MAKEUP: It's your big day; but it doesn’t mean that you put on extra layers of makeup to give you a cakey and blotchy look. Heavy makeup will not last long and will soon have cracks to spoil your wedding pictures forever. Keep the makeup light to enjoy the day to the fullest, without worrying about your makeup. MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN WELL BEFORE APPLICATION OF YOUR BASE: Well moisturized skin will hold your makeup and give you the perfect base to accentuate it. Your foundation will sit well on the moisture plumped skin for a dazzling effect on your special day. USE PRIMER AS THE BASE FOR MAKEUP: Primer might not be your best friend for everyday makeup; but on your wedding day, primer is a must-have. Primer will create a smooth base for your foundation to glide onto the skin, while covering the open pores and dark spots. Primer will also hold your foundation for a longer period of time, without getting blotchy. Primer will give you an even texture for a picture perfect look. Tinted moisturizer is also a good option for light makeup base.

MATCH FOUNDATION WITH YOUR SKIN TONE: To get the best of results, make an effort to find the foundation shade that matches your skin tone perfectly. Too light a shade than your actual skin tone will make your makeup look patchy and messy. Blend the foundation well on the skin. Splurge on good foundation brush or sponge for the perfect look on your big day. Most large department stores are happy to have you in for a trial, visit your nearest makeup counter and see what you like.

Some top products to help you achieve your wedding day look

USE CONCEALER TO HIDE DARK CIRCLES: It will help you hide the dark circles around your eyes for an even skin tone. Lock the foundation and concealer with compact powder for long lasting makeup. BLUSH EFFECT: Without strokes of blush on your cheekbones, your wedding photos will appear bland and washed. Highlight your cheekbones with cream or powder blush for a perfect wedding look. Find out the natural blush shade and apply it on your cheeks making a fish face, while moving towards your ears. DRAMATIC EYES: Eye makeup with heavy coating of mascara will give you the dramatic appeal, much needed for the wedding makeup. Also, apply base eyeshadow or primer before applying the main shade of eyeshadow and blend well to avoid creases on the eyelids. Base eyeshadow will hold your eye makeup for hours. Well defined eyes are the most important part of wedding makeup. DEFINE YOUR LIPS WITH LIP LINER: Whether you choose a matte finish or gloss appeal for your lips on your big day, apply lip liner to define the shape of your lips. Keep your lips exfoliated and smooth for a clean polished look on your wedding day.

CLINIQUE Blushing Blush Powder Blush Defining moment for cheeks. Silky formula sweeps effortlessly over cheekbones to create a natural look. Fresh, jet-milled colour builds to desired intensity with custom-sculpting brush. Long-wearing. Stays colour-true. Oil-free.

5 - Duck Embryo

HANGOVER CURES

In the spirit of “Each to his own” and all things open-minded, it seemed unfair to exclude the questionable hangover treat that is the Filipino duck embryo. Of course, nothing could be better for building strength than a calorie-rich dose of protein, but if the sight of an undercooked fried egg is lightly to see you reaching for the bucket, maybe best to avoid the half-formed dead chick-in-a-shell that is the ‘balut’ some in tropical climbs absolutely swear by.

4 - Shock to the System

COOL iPHONE TIPS

In the exact opposite vain to entry 10 on our list, millions find nothing more satisfying and indeed beneficial than braving cold temperatures until seconds before frostbite becomes and inevitability. This could be a cold shower, plunge into an icy pool or, as the good-old Irish used to do, burial in cold wet river sand. The theory basically goes along the lines that the cold and re-warmth ensures the body puts up a stronger fight and beats off those alcobugs.

5 - TAKING PICTURES

You can take a picture using the headphone cord. Ever want to get a bit father away from the camera when taking a self portrait? Everyone should know that you can snap a picture with your iPhone by pressing the Volume Up button, but few people realize this works with the volume buttons built into the headphones, too.

3 - Quit Moaning

Easier said than done but arguably the best and most healthy cure in the world, quit moaning and belly-aching about your hangover, get out of bed and do something useful! Nothing spiritual or moral here, just the plain and simple fact that a hangover wallowed in will take twice as long to clear as a hangover battled through.

5 - INCOMING LED FLASH

Some people complain that Apple’s smartphone doesn’t have an LED to flash to silently notify you of an incoming call or an alarm going off, a standard feature on most off this device’s competitors. Actually it does: the camera flash can be set to take care this task. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > LED Flash for Alerts.

2 - Hair of the Dog

A true British classic if ever there was one though not entirely without its following in other far corners of the world, millions every day swear by getting right back on the wagon by indulging in the fabled hair of the dog that bit them. From Bloody Maries to pints of ale to elaborate cocktails with anything and everything imaginable in, there is of course little doubt that further alcohol will make you feel better, at least in the interim.

5 - SIRI IN A HURRY

You can raise your iPhone to your ear and start barking out orders to Siri at any time, without needing to touch the Home button. You need to enable this, though. Just go to Settings > General > Siri > Raise to Speak.

On the other hand, from a purely medical point of view, indulging in further booze is not to cure the hangover, but instead to prolong it – albeit in a rather fuzzy head where you won’t mind too much.

5 - SCREENSHOT

You can create an image of your iPhone’s screen at any point. Press down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and a screenshot will be saved in the Images

1 - Preventative Medicine

app.

5 - REBOOT

It’s a very rare occurrence, but sometimes an iPhone will lock up. Maybe it won’t wake up from sleep mode, even if you know the battery isn’t completely drained. Or some poorly-written apps will crash and lock up the device. If this ever happens to you, you can force it to reset by holding down the Home and Power buttons until the device starts to reboot. Don’t panic, this can take a number of seconds. ORIGINAL SOURCE & MORE @ http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?ne wsID=18886&news=Apple+iPhone+tops+cool+features

And finally, admittedly a little less on the exciting side, prevention is of course far better than cure. That being said, never one to judge drinking habits or indeed advise you to stay on the sotf drinks all night…which of course you won’t…consider some of the hangover cures before indulging, rather than when they may prove too little too late. Indulgent meals, plenty of exercise, a good sauna to sweat out the toxins and may even a chicken embryo could work wonders the next day…but in any case won’t see you feeling any worse at least. BANANA LOAF

JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

The weather still doesn’t quite know what its doing just now so were looking at some hearty banana loaf this month.

Preparation and cooking times Prep time: 10mins Cook time: 45 mins

Ingredients 110g (4 oz) butter 110g (4 oz) sugar (can add some dark) 2 eggs 3 or 4 bananas (could leave one for end so less mashed) 225g (8 oz) SR Flour 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1 teaspoon cinammon 140g (5 oz) raisins Serves 8

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... This is a nice and easy recipe, so easy that my 6 year old son helped me. First off we got a nice large baking bowl and creamed together the butter and the sugar. Now add the beaten eggs, mash 2 or 3 of the bananas and chop one up. Add this to your bowl of butter and egg mixture then give it a good stir. Sift and fold the flour into your bowl, add the bicarbonate of soda the teaspoon of cinnamon and your raisins. If you prefer not to have raisins then just leave them out. Once that is all mixed up nicely prepare your loaf tin. Greased and lined then add your mixture pop in the oven for 45 mins at 180 C / gas mark 4. Simple as that.

e loved him on the TV in the 80’s and now it seems we love him on our phones. DRG released both free and paid versions of their app based on classic ITV game show Catch Phrase this month. Mr Chips makes a return initially on both iOS and Android but will also surface later on the Kindle fire platform. The free version of the app has more than 120 Catch Phrases and pretty much follows the format of the TV show where we are shown a basic animation generally featuring our yellow friend Mr Chips. All the right features are there, the easy on the eye graphics, the semi annoying music snippets and of course the classic sound bites and effects. Not sure how else they could have done it but i wasn’t a big fan of the mechanism for guessing the puzzle... but hey. Once you’re ‘addicted’ you can access more challenges by playing against your Facebook friends or app upgrades allow you to unlock further Catch Phrases, a hints pack and in future plans th potential to create your very own catch phrases. The full version is £2.99 and will give you automatic access to all Catch Phrase levels and the unlimited hint packs.

napChat is probably the app that a certauin age group have been grabbing with both hands since it came out and I’m guessing that the no1 reason for it being so high up on the platform charts. It is an application for i0S and Android that basically lets you send pics/messages to other people on the system, wait…. We’ve heard it all before right? Well what makes SnapChat different is the fact that when you send a message the people you send it to only have a short time (set by the sender) to view it before it is gone forever – it is not saved on either the senders OR the receivers device. Once it’s gone it’s gone. That’s where the worrying aspect of thing comes in, there are just so many ways that this system is open to potential abuse by a number of different areas of society but let’s not dwell on the darker side of things and find out what SnapChat brings to the table. Developed by two Stanford University students, Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, SnapChat was their way of expanding on the online use of emoticons. They felt that normal smiley faces were perhaps just not enough to get across the emotion of the sender. When using the app you basically take a photo, edit it, stick on a message or other stuff, pick the people you wanna send it to, set the timer from 1 to 10 seconds and then simple send. The message will only be visible for your chosen time before self-destructing and being lost forever. Those who see the message can reply by taking their own photo’s or by just messaging back. The parental concerns are glaringly obvious with this wee app as there is no tracability as to what younger users have sent/received and really all it takes is for someone to ‘snapshot’ the screen with theirs (didn’t try this though and it does let the sender know you’ve done it) or another device (too easy) and then the pic/message can be spread potentially to people the sender didn’t want to see it. IMHO SnapChat is less of a nice wee innocent time wasting app and more of a time bomb just waiting to explode.

e all had catapult when we were young, and at some point we’ve built stuff and proceeded to use said catapult to wreck our freshly built creations. I suppose that’s part of the reason games like Angry Birds have been so popular.

T

he Fast and Furious spin-off racing app certainly looks the part but what’s it like to play?

Well, following in the footsteps of the film Fast and Furious 6: The Game is set in the fair city of London and the developers have decided to make things pretty difficult to and you’re going to be stuck driving a less than top of the range Honda for a wee while if you’re anything like me.

My issue is that a lot of those titles, Angry Birds included seem to be struggling to evolve tio the next level… step up to the plate Catapult King to claim the title of coolest looking catapult game out there… everything that angry birds should have come up with but haven’t. Catapult King looks and plays like a dream and with its really simple to use controls it’s super easy to get right into the nitty gritty. The aim of the game is of course to knock down all manner of constructions and to kill off your pesky mocking enemies along with it. You get a certain amount of items and shots to do it in.

TF&F 6 is probably not your typical racing game and probably the vast majority of the driving parts are actually computer controlled with the player only required to do one wee aspect successfully in order for you to complete the stages of the game.

There is defo something that makes me really smirk when I land just the right shot and cause the whole building that houses my wee friends across the way and send them tumbling to their doom, and lets not talk about the level of fun it is to actually smack one of them directly with a well-placed shot and see the game physics really come into play sending him (or her) flying through the air.

The app has some properly good slick graphics and some decent gameplay with a good amount of different events and possible upgrades to help keep you coming back for just one more game. All would have been rosey in the garden had it not been for the games strong handed in-app purchasing system that basically makes you run out of fuel after 5 races meaning you either have to pay upfront for more fuel (and you end up seeing tenner’s fly out your online ‘wallet’ quicker than you can say turbo boost). You do have the option to wait for your tank to slowly fill up which is akin to the days of waiting for JPEG’s to download on a 28k modem. We can’t wait and these guys know it…. so fork up cash or play the game in short bursts….

For completing levels you earn magic that you can store up and use later and buy special ammo or abilities and, as is usually the case, the fewer boulders you use to clear levels the better your score will be. There is also some crowns to be won along the way. Levels progress in pretty hard and you will eventually come across levels when your enemies are sneakily hidden from your sight which forces you to think about exactly how to complete a certain task. There are 64 levels for you to get your teeth into with the developers promising to keep new levels coming.

What a downer.

I know use the Bosu regularly as do all my team whether it’s for deconditioned clients to pro athletes and the feedback and improvements in conditioning are well worth the slightly dear cost of this must have piece of kit.

lympus Has Fallen is a crazy, explosion laden fight fest that has zero depth but still entertains. The film stars Gerard Butler as ultimate badass Mike Banning. He’s tasked with defending the President of the United States of America. But the day job soon turns sour following a tragic accident. At this point, things take a surreal and laughter inducing turn. America has enemies all around the world but it has become almost fashionable for the North Koreans to be the ‘go to’ baddies. Needless to say, the shit soon hits the fan as

Page 54

the insane North Koreans launch a ground and air attack on the White House. The action is fast paced and relentless, despite raising innumerable questions about realism – like how could a single Hercules transport plane best two F22 Raptors? It’s probably best not to get into questioning the film too much though, or else be lost in a never ending circle of – what the hell? The plot is simple. Rescue the President, kill the bad people and save America! The premise is silly and stupid at times, but the movie still managed to remain enjoyable due to the well-executed violence and wonderfully shot action scenes. The film is ultra-American awesomeness, with flag waving and cliché dialogue galore. Despite this, the picture stars other top

actors, with Aaron Eckhart as President and Morgan Freeman as Speaker Trumbull. Whether or not you’d enjoy this offering largely depends on your mood and what kind of films you prefer. It’s a brainless flick that takes zero concentration to follow. If that’s what you feel like after a long week, there are worse choices out there. Overall, Olympus Has Fallen wasn’t boring. Just don’t expect a masterpiece. Or a shred of plausibility.

fter watching '21 and Over', I felt like I had just watched all the teen gross-out comedy's in one go. The film had all the usual big mouthed children engaging heavily in debauchery and irritating laughter with evil jocks and grumpy parents who just don’t understand the need for fun anymore.

Given the movies chosen advertising image of 2 girls about to take their tops off (proving once and for all that we are NOT evolved from apes, but from dogs), you wouldn't be

surprised to find a three stooges combo with flakey frat boys, beer-pong, lame sex jokes, goofy guys and surgically altered actresses. Not that '21 and Over' is completely without laughs and charm. There were a few rib ticklers such as lead sympathy-vacuum Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) puking in slow-mo/ hi-definition while riding a mechanical bull, being thrown from the roof of a building and running through a campus wearing only a pink bra and a teddy bear (Yes I have ruined the best bits. Take that society!) It’s actually quite entertaining if you don’t mind feeling like you’ve just watched a movie written by a 14 year trying to impress his mates.

JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

In the end, '21 and Over' is full of gross laughs at the expense of adolescents, which is what we all really want, and is worth a watch if you have friends, beer and no shame. Just take it in with low expectations and thank Buddha that you weren't raised to believe that the best way to pick up ‘Sorority Girls’ is to break into their house, lie and giggle. Of course, I could be wrong. I usually am.

REVIEW

I

was actually incredibly impressed with this film. I’m not too sure what I expected but after seeing the trailer, I think I was prepared to be disappointed. Too many films show the only good parts in the minute trailer to lure us out to watch them. This one had much more up its sleeve.

Page 62

The characters are not only loveable but witty. The storyline is well written and the adventure starts right at the beginning. I looked at the clock to see I was half an hour into the film but in reality it only felt like ten minutes. No sooner have you started watching, then the adventure is underway and there’s not many films that do that. There wasn’t a character that I didn’t like. At moments I thought the film as a whole could become very close to being like Arthur and the Invisibles (2006) but I was pleased

JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

that it wasn’t. The young teen MK goes to live with her Dad after her Mum passes away but her Dad is obsessed with the idea that tiny people live in the forest. They are the Leafmen and low and behold MK finds herself transported to their miniature world. It’s all about saving the forest and getting the pod to bloom at the right time. I think this is a film for the kids and the parents. The kids can enjoy the adventure and the parents can kick back, relax and enjoy the wit.

There’s not much else I can say about this film without giving a lot of the plot away but there are some big names voice acting here which is always a pleasure and I loved the array of accents, it was such a surprise and so nice to see!

REVIEW

can’t even begin to describe how incredible this film was!

I’m a huge Iron Man fan so maybe my opinion is a little biased but this film was just so amazing. It was different from your regular superhero movie in the sense that there is real emotional compromise. The film wasn’t about discovering a superhero, or saving the planet. It was about Tony Stark recovering from what he saw in The Avengers and whether or not he can be Iron Man again. With all the build up and tension in the first two films, Tony and Pepper are officially a proper couple and we see the gentler side of his bravado in relation to his feelings for Pepper. Don’t worry, it’s not as soppy as I’m making it sound! What I do want to say though is, I want to congratulate Robert Downey Jnr. (Sherlock Holmes) for giving one of the best performances I think he has ever done. I’ve never really had much criticism for him anyway but in this film, I felt like he came out of his comfort zone a little and showed a more vulnerable side to his character which was definitely an achievement as we all know how pig-headed Tony Stark can be. I found myself genuinely surprised by some of his actions – I won’t tell you what because I don’t want to ruin the surprise for you. The film is two hours long and normally films that long start dragging a little in the middle before picking up again but the time literally flew by in this film, I couldn’t believe it. So much has been fitted in and the film works perfectly. There are some bits that you do need to pay attention to (especially on your first watching) just to get your head around but they add to whole film. And the new characters introduced are brilliant, especially the boy! I must admit, I was surprised at where the film started and more of how it started (with Tony narrating) but this surprisingly – or perhaps slightly predictably – worked with the storyline as a whole and tied in nicely to the end. When watching this film, it’s important to remember that Avengers Assemble comes beforehand and I would recommend you watch it first simply because they do refer to it a lot and the majority of issues that come up do stem from this film. They talk about it a lot and Iron Man 3 is a stepping stones in the Marvel super-series. I absolutely loved this film. I thought it was witty, funny, entertaining and action-packed – not to mention sexy as hell! Go out and watch it, you will not be allowed to rest until you do so!

irst of all, this was disappointing. I know some people have a little something against Tom Cruise ever since he made Mission Impossible 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 – a little overkill perhaps? But I don’t have anything against him. In fact, I quite like a Mission Impossible every now and again and I think his cheesy action films are perfect for a chill out film

when you’re feeling sleepy and you just want to be entertained. So you can imagine that I was pretty keen to see Oblivion when I first saw the adverts, and the adverts looked good didn’t they? I thought so. Plenty of action, mystery, conspiracy etc but the reality was very different. It was like a real life cross between Wall-E and Total Recall. And there were even some moments where I found myself thinking about Cloud Atlas. To be honest, it felt like not much was happening. There was. There was loads going off but it wasn’t very well explained. JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

Things would just happen, no cause, no reason – this left me feeling incredibly lost. The story just jumped about all the time. I did enjoy seeing Morgan Freeman in action again. You can guarantee that he’ll always give an outstanding performance. Although credit does go to Cruise, he did do well, it’s just such a shame the plot of the film wasn’t as good as it could be. Or maybe I didn’t watch it properly?

.J. Abrams has outdone himself this time. If you’re a regular reader then you’ll have come across my previous Star Trek review and how fantastic I thought it was. This one did not disappoint. Most people will say that film sequels are never as good as the first but recently, I don’t know what’s in the air, a lot of film makers have been getting it very, very right. Chris Pine (This Means War) and Zachary Quinto (Star Trek) gave outstanding performances in this film. I can’t think of how to phrase how impressed I really am. If I was in charge of the Oscars, they’d both get one that’s for sure. This film has everything; action, humour, romance, space, near-death experiences, adventure and high-tech gizmos that always make a film fun. Honestly there’s not much else I can say but go and watch this. I’ve never seen the original Star Trek TV Series or even the original films but it’s still up there with Star Wars as one of the legendary inventions of its time. The first remake was incredible for its uniqueness and the sheer detail and attention that went into making it the ultimate cinema (and home cinema) experience. This film is no different. I could even say it’s better but I might have to watch them both again before drawing any hasty conclusions. Benedict Cumberpatch (BBCs Sherlock) proved to be an interesting villain. After coming to the British public’s attention in the BBCs production of Sherlock Cumberpatch took the world by storm and since then has been rolling in the high paying acting jobs – and so he should be! But as our well known Sherlock Holmes is a good guy, I was interested to see how Cumberpatch would fare as a bad guy. Yeah, he didn’t do too badly. Some moments I thought ‘hmmm, slight overacting?’ but in relation to what was happening, I think that was mainly due to the writers; if you write a character that way, that’s how he’ll turn out.

REVIEW

This is quite a long film and sometimes with long films you get to a climax moment and think ‘ah this is it, this is the end’ and then all of a sudden there’s an anti climax and you find that they’ve still got so much to do. Personally when this happens, I get so fed up. But here, we have climax after climax after climax and never at one moment did I feel like it was being dragged out. Everything was interwoven so nice and neatly that it all simply flowed from one catastrophic event to another. Before I wrap things up I should put a small mention of Simon Pegg in here simply because of his fantastic talents. In the first film, he played a relatively small part and we are first introduced to him about half way through. This was a little disappointing – I like his character, Scotty – but you’ll be glad to know that Pegg is up there with the lead roles and the humour is just brilliant. It really is. Some people say that Star Trek isn’t for them but until they’ve witnessed it for themselves and been taking on that mindboggling journey through space, they don’t know what they’re talking about!

annibal is an awe inspiring epi-serie in which a feotus faced special investigator, namely a young Will Graham (Red Dragon, 2002) attempts to solve a string of nontoo-pretty murders whilst simultaniously tackling his own mental demons. Hired to work the case because of his super human ability to autistically assess crime scenes, he finds himself both working with, and being constantly analyzed by Dr Hannibal ‘Lickedy Lips’ Lecter at the request of Police Chief Jack ‘Lawrence Fishburn’ Crawford. When I first started to watch, I half expected to witness an over blown, ruinous plot that in no way reflected the origional brilliant movies or masterful novels. What I ACTUALLY watched were four compelling episodes which stitched together almost flawlessly with the films.

Little details here and there are changed, notably the sex and race of some of the characters (because we’ve all moved on, yea?) Freddy Lounds is now a sexy female reported, which leaves open the question ‘Why Freddy? Fredette? Fredweena?’ One could guess that she uses the name to get ahead in an oldschool male dominated world. The story line unfolds dramatically with scenes of grotuesque mutilations and the constant need for psychoanalysts at the crime scenes. Somehow, understanding the killers seems to be more important than actually catching them. The role of Hannibal is played to creepy perfection by former professional dancer Mads Mikkelsen. This Hannibal differs in many ways from the one we all know and love, but still manages to retain the same charm and sophistication. Being an indulgent gastronomist, some of the food he cooks in the show looks so good you would chow down relentlessly despite the implication that it could be made of person. I for one will be watching to find out. The tale of Hannibal lives on!

Film 1: The Fire Bulge

I

t’s difficult to know where to start with a series like Liberation. I’m only on the first part, and it’s already proving to be a marathon experience. Everything about the production is vast. Huge set pieces. Thousands of men. Hundreds of tanks. And no CGI. Directed by Yuri Ozerov, the mini-series retells the story of the Great Patriotic War of WW2. And when I say retell, I really mean they actually made armies for this (or at the very least, it looks like they did.) The term mini-series doesn’t really cut it though; this series is in fact five films stitched together into one leviathan like work. To be fair, there wasn’t really any other way to tell the complete story effectively. For those who aren’t history buffs, the conflict between Nazi Germany and Russia was probably the most epic confrontation in human history. The films cover every major battle, in a very realistic way, using massed infantry, airplanes and tanks. The first film, titled ‘The Bulge of Fire’ sets the tone from the outset. We skip between black and white re-enactments, focusing on Hitler and Stalin during their planning. These parts are brilliantly done, so much so that even modern day versions of the two tyrants don’t match up. Throughout the piece, we then skip to colour and epic battles. The contrast between stiff and rigid personal exchanges then into huge battles is quite jarring, but nevertheless shows the link between the masters and the slaves quite well. The main battle (there are so many, but you’ll know it when you see it) is very gritty and is brilliantly shot. Put it this way - I’ve never seen a shot in any other film that casually pans from left to right showing a non-computer generated Blitzkrieg assault. David S. rnie is back. I am most likely far more excited by this than I should be, but its Arnie. Some things can’t be helped. This time he plays an ageing sheriff in a small community who are about to abandon the town due to a big football game. Meanwhile a crazy criminal is making an escape attempt, driving crazy across the country and he’s heading right for Arnie. The bloody fool. Cue violence, one liners and Johnny Knoxville in a housecoat with a Gatling gun... Awesome. Now Arnie is no spring chicken anymore, he moves awkwardly around the film and at times seems to be in no fit shape to be doing it. He’s still well-built but the years have not been kind to the man. So he’s helped out by a team of deputies and an ex-military guy that stays in the town. They take care of the running around and he gets to be cool and shoot stuff. It really is just a joy to see him in a good film, and this is a good film. It knows exactly what it is. It doesn’t take itself too seriously like some of Van Damme or Seagals recent efforts. You have Luis Guzman saying one-liners from previous Arnie films as a wee nod to the audience. Johnny Knoxville being crazy, the outstanding Peter Stormare playing the kind of bad guy we love him to play and Forest Whitaker playing an FBI agent that really has no need to be there other than for us to know the bad guy is really, really bad. Everything about this film just works really well. The right balance of action and fun makes it a really enjoyable experience. If you’re a fan of Arnie in his heyday you should definitely check it out.

I

still can’t make my mind up when it comes to Rob Zombie. I should love his films. I’m into the films they pay homage to but some of them have just not hit the mark. Like his remake of Halloween. I hated it. The sequel wasn’t too bad though but that may have just been due to Danielle Harris. Anyway, here comes his new beast. The Lords of Salem. Here we follow DJ Sherri Moon Zombie as she is sent a record in a crazy ass wooden box with ‘A gift from the Lords’ written on it. Most people would at this point ignore this crazy looking item but no, since we’re in film land they obviously open it up and play it on the radio straight away. Yep it’s that easy apparently. Like Disney story directed by Rob Zombie. Anyway, the record has some crazy effect on all the women listening to it. Bringing up some crazy past events and ends up giving them all a headache with added weirdness… So the weirdness continues, you have ETs mum, Magenta from Rocky horror, horror legend Ken Foree and Evil Lyn herself Meg Foster playing the big evil witch type person. It’s all a bit bizarre but if like me you’re a fan of Italian horror from the 70s then you’ll see exactly where he’s coming from. So you probably won’t be disappointed by the tone of the film and the bizarre subject matter if you’re a fan of Argento and Fulci. It doesn’t sit very well compared to modern day horror but I don’t think that’s what Zombie was going for. It doesn’t try to be grind house or put in kitschy little nods to the past. It’s just a woman in a bizarre situation trying to stop herself from going mad when it’s actually the world around her that’s caving in. Good show old chap.

et another quality British horror film has hit the shelves this month. I don’t know what’s happening right now or if it’s just I notice them more because Supermarket shelves are filled with low budget horror films but we seem to be having a bit of a horror renaissance in this country right now. It’s in no way a bad thing. Especially when we have films as good as The Facility coming out. So here we follow a group of lab rats heading in to a facility in the middle of nowhere to test a new drug. We are introduced to the excellent ensemble cast one by one and told a little bit about each of them as they head in to be injected with the new drug. It isn’t long until everything goes horribly wrong too. Well it is a horror film after all. The story moves along at a quick pace and plays with the fact that due to the stagnated way people were injected, they each have symptoms showing at different times. It’s incredibly well done. The film does have one really stupid death moment in it which kind of ruins it towards the end as it takes you out of the moment. I mean if someone’s about to go mental, and you know they’re about to go mental do you a) lock yourself in a room with them or b) try to get as far away from them as possible. Yeah clearly I’d go for a) too. So it’s a solid character driven horror in which you feel sorry for the characters as they are fully aware of how hopeless their situation is. They’ve already been injected with the drug and there’s nothing they can do about it. The cast are outstanding and it’s great to see Alex Reid in another horror film after her outstanding performance in the Decent. She should do more horror films. It makes me happy.

aron Eckhart should be huge. The first film I saw him in was ‘In The Company Of Men’ and it’s still one of the best films I have ever seen. He gives such a powerful performance that when I first watched it I was like, “That guy is going to be huge”. But it just never quite happened for him. He’s a great character actor and gets great parts but he still doesn’t seem to have the pulling power to carry of his own big film. This should be his big film. This film should have been huge. In a time of Bourne and Taken this film ticks all the right boxes but seemed to sneak under everyone’s radar… Just as well you have me then really. So Aaron Eckhart plays an ex government agent who has travelled to Eastern Europe to work on cracking security systems for a big company. One time at the office he notices they don’t own the patent for one of the items being used and asks someone to look into it. Next thing he knows the building is empty, all his colleagues have been murdered and he has a hit man after him. Not his best day in the office then. You follow Eckhart and his incredibly annoying daughter as they attempt to piece together what’s happened whilst being shot at and having to go on the run. Oh, and when I say his daughter is annoying I mean that I would have gladly slapped her in the face throughout the film. I don’t condone violence against kids or anything but she’s just so damned annoying. I mean she almost ruins the film. Luckily Eckhart pulls out an awesome performance and makes it worth a watch. Stupid kid.

tarting as what many believed as an April Fool’s Joke, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon may not be just a DLC for the massively successful Far Cry 3, nor is it a full on 15 hour game. It’s just simply a small downloadable game that has the gameplay from Far Cry with a few adjustments… mainly humour. The first thing you’ll notice is the obvious 80’s retro theme of the game, the whole style of it is like watching something on an old VHS system with retro Ninja Gaiden cut scenes and 80’s style music. Plus everything from the buildings to the animals has an 80’s sci-fi like texture such a neon sabre cats and cyber sharks. Blood Dragon’s lean towards humour, catch phrases, and slapstick actually pay off and they fit with its ridiculous and entertaining story, like the training stage at the beginning. The dialog is funny and is reinforced with random NPC babbling superior nonsense and cybernetic hand gestures, and even the loading screens can make you ‘LOL’. The music also plays perfectly from the Bladerunner inspired theme music to Long Tally Sally by Little Richard. The game focuses on a new protagonist through an original story campaign, set on a new Island, that isn’t even half the size of the island from Far Cry 3. The game is set in a fictional 2007, where the world is suffering the aftermath of a nuclear war between the United States and Russia. You play as Rex a war hardened soldier that has been transformed into a half man half cyber super soldier, most noticeable form his cyber hand and cyber eye. After a plot twist Rex seeks revenge against his betrayers. Blood Dragon is a downloadable stand-a-lone game that doesn’t require Far Cry 3 to play. The gameplay isn’t much different from Car Cry 3 and you basically get your usual open world, first-person shooter, with the same vehicles from Far Cry 3. You will find high powered explosives, heavily modified firearms, and a samurai style large knife in order to kill their way through the main missions. Side missions involve liberating garrisons, killing rare animals, and saving Nerds (scientists). Stealth is rewarded by earning extra Cyber Points. The skill tree “Ways of the Animal” which was in Far Cry 3 is replaced with a simpler levelling system that automatically unlocks upgrades. The crafting mechanic is also removed from Blood Dragon so no more killing animals for larger bags. The newest creature is the Blood Dragon, a fierce huge lizard type creature that doesn’t breathe fire, instead shoots laser beams from its eyes. They can be tough to kill on the ground but get yourself to a higher platform then you’ll have a much easier time. Overall Far Cry Blood 3 Dragon is probably one of the best downloadable games that you can buy on PSN or Xbox Live. Even though it’s still a mini-game you can easily achieve 9-10 hours of gameplay from completing the campaign and securing the entire island. It pretty much is just a laugh with crude and ridiculous humour that works and enjoyable gameplay.

etro: Last Light, a beautiful, dark and gritty post-apocalyptic world filled with all manner of treacherous paths, mutated predators who rule the landscape and even the air tries to kill you. Thanks to the events of the first Metro, you and the rest of the population of Moscow live underground thanks to the nuclear bomb that decimated the surface and you must find a way to survive. We play the game through the eyes of the battle-worn Artyum, the protagonist from Metro 2033. After making the drastic decision to wipe out the Dark Ones with a nuclear bomb, we are told by a man named Mystic that a single Dark One survived and believes that this creature is the key to humanities survival. The Ranger leader, Colonel Miller, would rather see the creature dead than alive and sends a sympathetic and jumbled Artyum on the hunt for the creature. This only leads Artyum through one hell of ride. The gameplay is fulfilling and enjoyable, stealth plays a big part in Last Light with gutters or overhead platforms forming hidden paths allowing you to quietly take out any enemies and conserve ammo. Light will also affect your stealth, with a light indicator on your person it will react whenever you’re within an lighten up area or a torch is pointing at you, leading you to turn off any light sources that might foil your plans or switching off the power to all the lights in the room. There are two types of enemies, humans and mutated animals, having both mixes up the style of combat that you will encounter. Humans will run for cover and occasionally try to flank you or flush you out while the deadly instinct of the mutated creatures will swarm you with large numbers or rush at you with unstoppable force requiring a more tactful approach to taking down either enemy. With the robust nature of Last Light you can acquire a few gadgets along the way. You can carry up to three weapons, which can be anything, and you don’t to have waste one slot with a secondary weapon. That said there isn’t a lot of variety of weapons to choose from but you can customize them with scopes, suppressors etc. Ammo is scarce in Metro, upon running out you will often find yourself swapping for the enemies dropped weapon to continue on and thoroughly looking around the area for more. You can buy more ammo from shopkeepers almost every time you enter a civilised area, these moments are scarce though so buy what you can, when you can.

GGGG Sammy S for GoGuide Magazine

Games Review and News Contributor

The currency in the game is also ammo, old worn ammunition that you’ll occasionally find lying about while looting underground, abandon structures or searching a dead body. Use it to buy ammunition you can use, guns or grenades. Currency ammo can also be used as higher-powered ammo for your weapon if you’re in desperate need of more. You can carry two types of grenades, claymores and throwing knives. With the air toxic on the surface you are forced to rely on your fragile gas mask and fresh air supply filters to keep you alive, which will surely have you pacing the area if you begin to run out of air. Your flashlight will come in handy when in the dark subway tunnels of Moscow but it will need charged up when used frequently, and a lighter and compass will point you in the right direction if you ever find yourself lost. Last Light is heavily story driven but the story is pretty direct, with only a few twists and turns and strangely short chapters. It is visually a really good looking game, sure you might need a top notch computer to crank it all the way up if playing on PC but nether less it is still a pretty stunning game. The atmosphere throughout the entire game is intense and breath-taking. You can see the toll that this apocalyptic world has taken on the rest of the inhabitants, when passing through underground towns you’ll see worn out families, disgruntled occupants and sick elderly. Overall Metro Last Light will suck you in with stunning graphics and fun gameplay. With only a handful of glitches and random occasions where you slow down, they won’t derail you away from the game too much. It is one of the best looking firstperson shooters to come out this year and coupled with it being one of the best atmospheric and ok story-driven games, you won’t be forgetting it too soon.

W

ay back in 2011, Dead Island won the hearts of gamers with its emotional cinematic trailer, however this was all a ruse and being nothing more than an Easter egg in the actual game, we were all a little disappointed. This time round with Dead Island: Riptide we were a little wiser and knew what to expect, even if they did make another tear dropping trailer, we weren’t falling for it. But whether you’re new to the Dead Island: Riptide or importing your character over from the first game this will be one tropical paradise you’ll never forget.

Page 98

Set immediately after the events of Dead Island, our four immune zombie slaying companions; Ex-American football star Logan, rapper Sam B, Hong Kong police officer Xian Mei and Australian bodyguard Purna find themselves shipwrecked on the island of Palanai. Unfortunately for them, they’re greeted by the familiar sights of blood, guts and flesh eating zombies. This time we are joined in the company by a fifth immune character John Morgan, a former sailor in the United States Navy that was present during the islands military evacuation. It’s a typical zombie apocalypse story and you are tasked to find a way to leave the island before you’re completely vaporised by a nuclear bomb. At least the game tries to have some perilous story and we even see more of the main characters being involved by having their own inputs in cut scenes and showing some personality differences from each other. That said the voice acting and animations are far from perfect, in fact some can be borderline hysterical. Facial expressions can only be explained by an overuse of Botox perhaps? JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

Therefor leaving nothing but blank faces and removing any expression of emotion during some the “intense” and “terrifying” situations. What made Dead Island great in the first place was its creatively brutal and addicting combat. In the new release nothing much has changed with the combat side of things, well, other than adding a few more pieces of weaponry such as a staff and Wolverine styled feral claws. It’s still heavily focused on melee combat but you will come across more military based weapons such as your usual hand guns, shotguns and rifles along with a new variety of grenades and mines, which fits in correctly with the story as the island being occupied with military zones. Work benches still allow you to create diabolical weapon modifications and repair weapons in you inventory, you will also notice a few more ‘mods’ added into the mix as well as some familiar ‘mods’ from the previous game. New guy John takes full advantage of his hand-to-hand combat training and leans

towards more of the brawler class. If you haven’t played Dead Island before, you’ll pretty quickly realise that the most deadly weapon on your person is your kick and stomp attack and for John it can be modified to basically a ‘Falcon Kick’. One of the new features with Riptide is Horde Mode. These scarce but lengthy moments will require you to fight off a swarm of zombies while defending your base and its survivors, to begin with the mode isn’t particularly challenging when with your friends but as you progress through the story you will be required to run back and forth to protect your base. All the previous zombies make their return in Riptide, and you will encounter a few of the harder ones from the first Dead Island quite early on. Riptide also introduces a bunch of new zombies, such as ‘The Screamer’, which you probably have guessed screams at you which will stun and knock you down if too close. There’s ‘The Grenadier’ which will throw exploding chunks of flesh at you and then there’s ‘The Wrestler’, a terrifying brute that

swings his giant arm of pus around causing major damage. A nice touch with Riptide is even if you play the game solo the characters you don’t choose will still appear in the game, they only stay in camp though but do help protect the base during Horde Mode. You can even take on quests from the group and survivors, by returning a required number of certain object you will be rewarded with a weapon (or from earlier quests a bunch of grenades), obviously XP, and whoever you completed the task for, will also gain an upgrade that makes them more efficient during Horde Mode Dead Island Riptide hasn’t really improved much on the visual side but the game has sorted out some frame rate issues and graphical niggles. That being said the game does have its fair share of bugs and there are still some issues with glitches, textures and hit detection. Levelling up is utterly easy and you could effortlessly reach level 50 on your first play through. When roaming through the JUNE 2013 - issue (29)

island you’ll come across random survivors in the need of aid that offer nothing more than a large chunk of XP, and they don’t even have the courtesy to join your group of survivors when you help them. Dead Island Riptide may just seem more like a patch rather than a new game but with the new island of Palanai to explore and new zombies to fight off, it does offers a ton of fun for you to enjoy. Like the previous game its better enjoyed when playing with friends online, or you can jump into a game with someone roughly the same level as you and at the same point of the story. There isn’t really any need to pay attention to the story to enjoy Dead Island just slaughter as many zombies as creatively and painfully as possible.

CLASSIC MOVIE POSTERS 101

Y

oung Frankenstein is a 1974 American comedy film directed by Mel Brooks and starring Gene Wilder as the title character, a descendant of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The supporting cast includes Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Richard Haydn and Gene Hackman. The screenplay was written by Brooks and Wilder. The film is an affectionate parody of the classical horror film genre, in particular the various film adaptations of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein produced by Universal in the 1930s. Most of the lab equipment used as props were created by Kenneth Strickfaden for the 1931 film Frankenstein. To further reflect the atmosphere of the earlier films, Brooks shot the picture entirely in black-and-white, a rarity in the 1970s, and employed 1930s-style opening credits and scene transitions such as iris outs, wipes, and fades to black. The film also features a notable period score by Brooks’ longtime composer John Morris. A critical favorite and box office smash, Young Frankenstein ranks No. 28 on Total Film magazine’s “List of the 50 Greatest Comedy Films of All Time”
