AN UNFORGETTABLE SEASON OF ENTERTAINMENT FOR EVERYONE
Front cover illustration image credit: Tanya Mai Johnston (Mai Bendy Art)
Showcasing talent is at the heart of the Theatre’s summer programme with two outstanding productions of musical theatre classics. Miss Saigon® School Edition, with spectacular staging to match the power of the heart-stopping music, features eighty 16 to 18-year olds, and gangster movie spoof Bugsy Malone, packed with riotous fun, has a talented cast of one hundred and fifty 10 to 18-year olds. Both shows, Northern Ireland’s biggest youth theatre productions, feature professional direction, choreography, and musical accompaniment. The première of The Miami Showband Story, written by major local playwrights Marie Jones and Martin Lynch, tells the story of the legendary group and evocatively conjures up the era of the showbands in the 1960s and 1970s, and another musical with deep Irish roots is Angela’s Ashes - returning after its huge success in 2017. Frank McCourt’s emotional memoir of childhood in Limerick and beyond is guaranteed laughter and tears in equal measure.
The autumn season maintains undiminished the Grand Opera House’s reputation for presenting the very best in live theatre and entertainment. Top musicals Cabaret and Saturday Night Fever sit alongside a new production from the National Theatre of Shelagh Delaney’s iconic bittersweet mother-and-daughter play A Taste of Honey, starring Jodie Prenger. Jason Manford stars in Curtains, a hilarious musical whodunnit from the creators of Cabaret and Chicago, packed with catchy songs and equally catchy comedy! We look forward to welcoming you to the final season before the Grand Opera House’s iconic auditorium is restored ahead of the Theatre’s 125th anniversary in December 2020.

The Grand Opera House Trust presents
Play by Alan Parker Words & Music by Paul Williams By arrangement with Faber Music Ltd On behalf of Warner/Chappell Music Ltd THURSDAY 1 – SATURDAY 3 AUGUST 2019
The Grand Opera House Trust proudly presents fun, laughter, and entertainment for all the family. In this spectacular new production of the iconic musical comedy Bugsy Malone, young performers create mayhem in the world of Al Capone! A sparkling marriage of gangster movie and slapstick comedy, the ever-popular stage show of the classic movie tracks the rivalry between two half-witted street gangs. The washed-up ex-boxing promoter Bugsy Malone steps in to take control of Fat Sam’s gang and give Dandy Dan and his boys what they’ve got coming. It’s a brilliant gangster movie spoof where the message is one of good, clean fun, where the adults are kids, the songs and lyrics are infectious and sassy, and the characters are wonderful cartoon cut-outs. When the pandemonium comes to a sticky and hilarious end, the weapons of choice are ‘splurge’ guns firing whipped cream, flour bombs and custard pies.
Professionally directed and choreographed with a full live band accompaniment, the Grand Opera House’s production of Bugsy Malone features one hundred and fifty talented 10 to 18 year olds. A guaranteed feel-good musical theatre feast, with style, slapstick, laughs, dazzling talent, and an absolute avalanche of custard and cream!

“...THE PERFECT BALANCE OF COMEDY AND PATHOS DRIVING THE STORY ON FROM ONE TRAGEDY TO THE NEXT. BELFAST TIMES “
TUESDAY 3 – SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER An uplifting story of hope, fortitude and family. After its stunning debut in Belfast in 2017, Angela’s Ashes returns in this major musical adaptation of Frank McCourt’s memoir. The story is brought to life in this emotional telling of a childhood in Limerick and beyond, featuring unforgettable songs and melodies, told with a rare lyricism and a warm inimitable sense of humour. As his parents struggle to provide for him and his brothers in 1940s Ireland, we follow young Frank’s escapades and experiences in a Dickensian landscape peopled by a drunken father, a helpless mother, pompous priests, bullying schoolmasters, money-lenders and dancing-teachers, culminating in his defiant escape to a new life in America.
A haunting score adds to the emotional impact and the humour of the story. Angela’s Ashes has that rare gift of bringing an audience to tears one minute, laughing out loud the next – by turns, deeply moving and riotously funny, this heart-warming musical promises again to be one of the major theatrical events in Northern Ireland this year and is definitely one not to be missed!

Restoration 2020: the excitement is building…. In January 2020 the most significant restoration of the Grand Opera House in forty years will begin. The ten-month project is taking place thanks to the support of lottery players through the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which is committing £4.8 million towards the total project costs of £12.2 million.
Restoration work will include the repair and repainting of the auditorium’s plasterwork, including the famous elephant heads, front-of-balcony designs, ceiling décor, paintings and the intricate decorative finishes. The glass extension will also be restored to its original purpose as a bar.
Since the historic auditorium was last restored in the 1970s, over 10 million people have visited and seen a show. Time and footfall have taken their toll though, and next year’s project will return the auditorium to its original splendour and ensure that one of the best-loved and architecturally most significant theatres in the UK and Ireland is secured for generations to come.
To enhance the comfort and enjoyment of theatregoers, auditorium seats will be replaced, a modern air handling system installed, the number of toilets will be increased and more wheelchair spaces created. A permanent exhibition will also bring the Theatre’s heritage and history to life. The Theatre will reopen in late 2020, and much more information will be available at goh.co.uk as the project progresses.
