THEATRE

The best that theatre has to offer!

Surprises and delights in store this season This season the Grand Opera House is thrilled to welcome back the work of hugely-successful Belfast playwright Marie Jones with her hilarious comedy Fly Me to the Moon. Brilliantly mingling humour with sympathy for the struggles of ordinary people, Marie’s plays continue to delight audiences with their sparkling wit and the irrepressible spirit of her characters. This new season is excitingly wide-ranging, with theatre and entertainment to suit all tastes; and so alongside one of Belfast’s foremost playwrights, the world’s foremost playwright William Shakespeare is also represented, in a new production of Macbeth from the National Theatre, a searing tragedy of destructive personal ambition. In altogether more light-hearted vein, the Solana comes to Belfast in the new stage version of the no-holds-barred ITV comedy series Benidorm, featuring many of the unforgettable television stars. The ever-fascinating passionate but sad love story of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert will be brought vividly to life by Northern Ballet Theatre in Victoria, and Samantha Womack stars in a stage adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train - a modern classic novel of mystery and suspense which has been turned into a magnificently riveting theatrical experience. Unmissable family entertainment includes the return of Shrek the Musical, Northern Ireland’s biggest pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, and the brand-new, smash-hit show Madagascar the Musical. With these and many more surprises and delights in store this is another Grand Opera House season which brings to Northern Ireland the best of local, national and international live theatre! Ian Wilson Chief Executive Grand Opera House

The Arts Council, as the Grand Opera House’s principal funder, is delighted to support this new season’s programme and the excellent breadth of choice it offers to audiences. We have the opportunity to catch the most talked-about theatre currently touring the UK, including the National Theatre and Northern Ballet (both here courtesy of a cross-border touring agreement between the UK Arts Councils), the new stage adaptation of The Girl on the Train and the Take That musical The Band on its pre-West End tour. Local talent also features strongly, with a series of plays by one of Northern Ireland’s most distinguished playwrights, Marie Jones, and some choice highlights from the 2018 Belfast International Arts Festival. Support for new writing talent

from Northern Ireland is also much in evidence, notably with the staging of a new show written by Belfast’s own Leesa Harker. That The Real Housewives of Norn Iron sits alongside Macbeth and Benidorm Live, shows the Grand Opera House’s commitment to ensuring that Northern Ireland audiences continue to enjoy the same access as elsewhere on these islands to the latest and the best that theatre has to offer. Interview | Marie Jones

The Bard of

Belfast

In a year during which three of her plays are being performed at the Grand Opera House, we asked Marie Jones to look back on her career.

Fly me

Moon to the

the end of an era of innocence. How did you first get involved with theatre? Fly Me To The Moon and The Miami Showband are coming to the Grand Opera House over the next twelve months. Which are you looking forward to most? That’s a very hard question! Fly Me To The Moon is special because the two actresses originally involved came to me and said we need a play for women. We all had experience of care workers, and so the setting of the play – someone being taken care of in their own home – came out of this. We knew how hard these women had to work and their stoicism and humour, and all this went into the writing. But then in the play something unexpected happens and tragedy turns into comedy with a big moral dilemma that, from the audience’s perspective, also becomes very funny. The idea for The Miami Showband came from one of the survivors of the tragedy, Des Lee. Des approached Martin Lynch who then called me, and from the outset we said that we didn’t want this to be about a massacre – it had to be about the innocence of the 60s, when people were sitting at home listening to music on the radio because they didn’t have televisions and the big groups didn’t come to play in Ireland. So when the showbands came they created a real phenomenon, bringing dancing out of the houses and into the halls. The play is a celebration of the Showband’s music and the optimism of that period of time, as well as being BOOK ONLINE | goh.co.uk

I remember I went to the Ulster Hall to see a local comedian and playwright called James Young, and I came away really wanting to be in one of his plays. So I wrote to him and he asked me in for an audition before a show, and afterwards he said why don’t you stay on and see the play. And when the lights went up on the stage I saw what looked like the living room in my own house, and I never imagined that anyone else would care about something like that. Then the actors started to talk like me and my neighbours, and I thought “I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but this is where I’m going to be for the rest of my life.” It was almost a spiritual thing, because you felt that your own life was being played out in front of you. It was suddenly relevant, and ordinary people found it interesting and funny. How does it feel to be back at the Grand Opera House? When I walked in here today one of the staff said to me “welcome home” and that’s how I feel. This is the people’s theatre, and it always has been. Everyone’s welcome. It’s also the theatre where I started out. About 25 years ago I was told that no local writer could fill the Grand Opera House, and I thought “well I’m just going to have to prove you wrong!” Sometime later I wrote an adaptation of The Government Inspector, which we put on at the Grand Opera House, and by the end of the week the place was packed. When it finished we went to the Crown and ordered champagne, and said “yes – we’ve done it!” That was the start of everything for me.

MONDAY 21 - SATURDAY 26 JANUARY “He never won any more than a couple a quid, but that was his life…all he had…his paper, the horses, memories of singing along with Frank Sinatra and a life of misery...he was better off dead in my opinion.” When two community care visitors discover an opportunity to make a small fortune they are left with a mouth-watering dilemma. Don’t miss this laugh-out-loud production by Marie Jones, who also penned Women on the Verge of HRT, and the international smash-hit Stones in His Pockets.

A hilarious story of life, death and the importance of money, Fly Me to the Moon runs at the Grand Opera House following a triumphant run in New York.

uncovering the secrets of the victorian grand opera house In 1895 the most renowned theatre architect of the Victorian period, Frank Matcham, bestowed on Belfast one of his most imaginative and opulent creations. The Grand Opera House, with its magnificent architectural and decorative scheme, has survived for 123 years - while most of its contemporaries from that extraordinary era of theatre-building have long gone. In January 2020 the Grand Opera House Trust is planning a once-in-a-generation restoration project which will return this matchless heritage asset to its former glory, enhance the public areas of the Theatre, and share the rich and colourful history of the Grand Opera House through a new and vibrant exhibition. It is nearly forty years since the auditorium was last restored when the Grand Opera House, Northern Ireland’s last surviving Victorian Theatre, was saved from demolition in the late 1970s. Work is already taking place behind the scenes to better understand the auditorium’s decorative and functioning order and how it has changed through more than a century of operation so as to better inform the restoration of this unique heritage asset. One of the surveys undertaken involved painstakingly peeling back layer upon layer of paint, varnish and gilding from 21 locations around the auditorium and analysing them using a high-powered microscope to glimpse the decorative schemes of the past.

The Grand Opera House Trust has been given a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund of £242,700 to develop its restoration plans which will then be assessed by the Fund for a further £4,560,000. Thanks to National Lottery players, the funding will help protect, conserve and enhance the heritage of the Grand Opera House for future generations.

The striking crimson scheme of the past half century was preceded by a range of colour schemes dependent on the fashion of the day. There is evidence that some parts of the auditorium had been painted in a warm, yellowish off-white colour, followed by a second colour scheme of a deep yelloworange colour, and a third scheme that included a pale stone colour. Structural surveys have uncovered the original seating layout when the auditorium held 2,500 people - today it seats just over 1,000. However, there is still no trace of the ghost that has been seen on the stage through the decades! The historic Grand Opera House, which will celebrate its 125th anniversary on 23 December 2020, has left an indelible mark on the history and heritage of UK and Irish theatre, and the restoration and anniversary combined provides an unprecedented opportunity to share the Theatre’s wonderful heritage, and greatly improve access to this unique building.

Creating, inspiring, and having fun! Each summer for the past eight years the Grand Opera House Trust has staged Northern Ireland’s leading Summer Youth Production. More than 1,500 young people, aged 10 to 18, have taken part in a range of productions including Bugsy Malone, Annie, Oliver! and this year’s highly acclaimed production of The Wizard of Oz.

“Don’t let the fact that it’s a Grand Opera House Summer Youth Project production suggest that it is anything less than utterly professional… it was jaw-droppingly stunningly impressive.” The Irish News (Oliver!, 2017) Over 200 young people plus a youth orchestra and youth technical team work with a professional director, musical director, choreographer, musicians, as well as the Grand Opera House’s own technical team to create a full-scale musical in two weeks! The aim of the Summer Youth Production is to encourage participation in the arts, develop acting, singing and dancing skills, and build confidence. Some of the participants go on to study musical theatre or work in a professional capacity in the industry in Northern Ireland or further afield. BOOK ONLINE | goh.co.uk

“Many can dismiss youth theatre and make statements claiming “they could think of nothing worse”. Well more fool them because the cast of this show are simply outstanding. More than 200 young people took to the stage for the first time last night with such a professional air you would think they had been doing this for years.” Belfast Live (The Wizard of Oz, 2018) The title for the Theatre’s 2019 Summer Youth Production will be announced in early 2019 and open auditions will be held on 16 and 17 February with callbacks on 16 March 2019. Visit goh.co.uk for updates.

Working in partnership with the Grand Opera House For many years, the local business community and the Grand Opera House have recognised the importance of mutually beneficial partnerships. Working with the Theatre can help companies achieve their community engagement commitments and corporate social responsibility goals, as well as providing an enticing new way to engage staff or customers, and in some cases directly helping to generate new business. This summer the Grand Opera House was delighted to begin working with two new partners on its family events. In early July the Theatre held its second annual Family Festival with the support of ISL Waste Management, during which more than 1,800 people enjoyed a series of workshops and fun activities around the Theatre, many incorporating themes of recycling and eco-friendly waste reduction.

Later that month the Theatre opened its doors to 200 of the brightest young actors in Northern Ireland, who were given the experience of their lives rehearsing and performing The Wizard of Oz to more than 4,500 people thanks to Phoenix Natural Gas who supported this year’s Summer Youth Production. Phoenix’s support helped to fund the production itself and also provided a number of bursaries to ensure that participation in the production was open to everyone. The Theatre is proud to be working in partnership with all the companies below, and grateful for the ongoing support they give to the Grand Opera House. If you would like to explore partnership opportunities that deliver real value to your company, please send an email to partnerships@goh.co.uk.
