As this season brochure is my first as Chief Executive of the Grand Opera House, it is my opportunity to introduce myself as I present the Spring-Summer 2017 programme at Northern Ireland’s Premier Theatre. Belfast-born, I am no stranger to the Grand Opera House, having spent the early part of my career working within the Theatre’s marketing department. Now I am proud and honoured to be heading the outstanding organisation which brings you this season, and many more great seasons to come. Spring naturally prompts anticipation of renewal and new growth, and those themes will run through future plans for the many ways in which the Grand Opera House contributes to the arts in Northern Ireland. The range of shows and events presented on the Theatre’s splendid stage will continue to be broad and appealing, with something for everyone. But expect to see new ambition in the work we present - top plays, musicals, dance and live entertainment from Ireland, the UK, and from international companies. Another central feature of our work is Creative Learning. We plan new growth in our programme of education and participation, both in the Baby Grand within the Theatre, and elsewhere in the City and beyond. This is important and exciting work, fostering a love of the performing arts amongst audiences of tomorrow.
Tomorrow’s audiences are the theme of a brand-new event I am delighted to announce. In July we will present our first Family Festival, which gives a strong indication of the importance of activities for families and children at the Grand Opera House. The Festival precedes our traditional Summer Youth Project, involving 200 young people in the staging of a full-scale musical, with professional direction, choreography and musical accompaniment. This year, they will present an unrivalled modern classic - Lionel Bart’s Oliver!, which we are able to present by the kind permission of Sir Cameron Mackintosh, to whom we are hugely grateful. I hope you will find plenty in our forthcoming seasons to entertain, move and delight. Ian Wilson Chief Executive
The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Principal Funder of the Grand Opera House. Another superb programme of drama, dance and opera, with the promise of more memorable nights out at the incomparable Grand Opera House, beckons over the coming months. Quality and variety are this Theatre’s great strengths, and the new season certainly lives up to expectation with the likes of the National Theatre’s production of Jane Eyre, Opera North’s Season of Fairytales, and the world premiere production of Angela’s Ashes. Or your eye may be drawn to one of the big West End shows, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the

MUSICAL
SHOUT! is the hilarious musical magazine that brings back the sights and smashing sounds that made England swing in the freewheeling decade of the 1960s. From cover-to-cover, SHOUT! travels in time from 1960 to 1970 chronicling the dawning liberation of women. Just as Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Cilla Black and Lulu were independent women enjoying flourishing and successful careers, English and American women were redefining themselves in the face of changing attitudes about gender. SHOUT! reflects that change through the unforgettable music of the time. Though SHOUT! wears its heart on its sleeve, it also has its tongue planted firmly in its cheek. Everything from the period is recreated ranging from the fashions and the dances to the music and the hair - all of which is heightened and made just a tiny bit larger.

The show features terrific new arrangements of such well-loved classics as To Sir, With Love, Downtown, You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me, Son Of A Preacher Man and Goldfinger. And writers such as Tony Hatch, Jackie Trent, Burt Bacharach and Hal David are all heard at the top of their game through songs which resonate with a timeless quality appealing to all generations. With a shimmy and a shake, the songs are tied together by hilarious soundbites from the period ranging from Sixties advertisements for anything and everything to lonely-heart letters answered by an advice columnist who thinks every problem can be solved with a ‘fetching new hairstyle and a new shade of lipstick’. Please be aware that this production contains adult content. With its irresistible blend of foot-tapping songs, eye-popping fashions and psychedelic dances, this delightful musical will make you want to throw your head back and, simply, SHOUT!

BALLET
A classic production of one of the greatest Romantic ballets. Giselle is a haunting story of innocence and betrayal, a timeless tale about the redemptive power of love. A young peasant girl, Giselle, is in love with the handsome Albrecht, a Duke who hides his nobility, and his engagement to another. When Giselle discovers he has deceived her, she is driven to madness, and dies of a broken heart. The vengeful spirits of abandoned brides gather
by her grave, ready to welcome Giselle into their fold, and force men to dance to their death. Will Giselle’s love protect Albrecht from his fate? Moving from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a moonlit world of mystery and menace, Mary Skeaping’s production of Giselle features some of ballet’s most dramatic scenes and otherworldly images. Adolphe Adam’s score, performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic, adds to the lush atmosphere.
