PRESIDENT’S CORNER Ma r k
B a ker
Hello All,
W
ell, we have just passed the vernal equinox, and spring has sprung. This means the days will give us a growing amount of daylight time to enjoy our Porsches. Get out there and enjoy the weather because soon the summer heat will be upon us. We have a new Panorama Liaison person. He is Mike Labowitch. Thanks, Mike for pitching in. Our Going Places award winning editor, Angela Manente, is stepping down from her post in December of this year. She has provided the club with amazing monthly magazines for over 5 years. Thanks Angela, for your great contribution. We are currently searching for a replacement, and these will be hard shoes to fill. Our Driving Tour Chair, Rook Younger, is planning in conjunction with the other Zone 8 Regions, an entire Zone 8 Driving Tour. It will encompass driving segments through all of the Regions in Zone 8. You will be able to participate in all or part of the driving segments. It sounds like an amazing event. It is being planned for some time in 2023. Stay tuned for details. As usual we have a busy slate of upcoming activities. The following are the upcoming events: • Mar 25,26,27 – DE – Track Day and Instructor School at INDE • Mar 30 – Driving Tour to Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum • Apr 2 – PnP at Mimi’s at Desert Ridge • Apr 6 – Monthly Meeting at Aunt Chiladas (a club favorite location) • Apr 9 – AutoX at AMP • Apr 10 – Sunday Drive and Brunch at Rancho de los Caballeros (in Wickenburg) • April 30 – AutoX at AMP (round 2) I hope to see you all at an upcoming event. Drive Safely, Mark
Ken Steele, former Arizona Region President and PCA member for over 25 years, passed away on March 26th. He leaves behind his lovely wife, Fran, of 58 years! Ken and Fran organized and hosted the popular annual Alpine Weekend Trip in June for 15 events before passing the baton on in 2016. Ken co-chaired the 25th Anniversary of Flight 25 Concours, which was spectacular. He ensured the Golden 50th Anniversary Party for AZPCA was awesome and elegant. He accepted the Enthusiast of the Year Award in a tearful acceptance speech at Paradise Valley Country Club. He was a friend to all. His laugh and smile had a way of making you want to volunteer for events. He loved this club. He will be missed but never forgotten. | 6 |

his month I have sad news to share. Ken Steele, who was an Arizona Region past President and PCA member for over 25 years, passed away. I speak on behalf of our many members, who knew and worked with Ken, in sending our sincere condolences to Fran and family on their loss. I have received interest from one of our members in maybe taking over as the editor-in-chief for Going Places. She will be spending time with me this month when I start planning and working on the May issue before she makes a decision. Stay tune for an update next month. The mystery is solved... The car on the cover of the March issue of Going Places belongs to Earl DeFrates. Thanks Dan Jacob for taking the photo. Keep in mind when taking possible photos for the Going Places cover, to use verticle orientation. This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Aaron Raichura for contributing “Meet A Member.” Aaron will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I appreciate the articles and pictures that members send me because without them there would be no newsletter. Now that spring is officially here, it’s time to take some drives in the Valley and enjoy the desert blooms. Check out the club calendar at: https://az.pca.org/events/ Hope to see you soon at an upcoming event.

BOOK REVIEW FOR PORSCHEPHILES
BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION
Mark Lange THE DRIVER Mark Lange THE DRIVER series, by R.L. Turner, self published in USA.
M
ark Lange is a Driver. Not only does he race a GT-3 Porsche as a team owner, but he provides custom Currier service to discriminating customers. This series of books describes his adventures on race tracks and on highways. All the action takes place in Europe with precise descriptions of many race tracks and the streets of several cities. The author is a multiple Porsche owner and a member of Maverick Region, PCA, but the detail in his descriptions of driving in European cities and on European race tracks makes it obvious that he has not been a home body. These books provide everything Hollywood would want: racing scenes, car chases, shoot-em-up gun fights, martial arts, even some subtly sexy, overachieving women. They are well enough written that when the action jumps back and forth between different locations the reader does not get lost The books are fast paced to the point of being breathless;. There are many instances of driving, martial arts and shooting action, described in intimate detail. Included are some turn by turn descriptions of driving various European courses where the corners and straights all have names; Book 1 even provides course maps for some famous European courses. There are also specific details of driving around in certain European cities, and even specifics on charismatics of different real, and imagined, hand guns. The Series purports to give insight into the arcane world of custom Currier service in Europe, the authenticity of which this reviewer cannot vouch for.. But the stories are indeed interesting and mostly plausible. Each book stands alone, but they do make reference to earlier events in the continuum that is the total story.
Three books are currently available – Decision, Training, and Turmoil. A fourth book is due out late in 2020. There are a few inconsistencies to pique the interest of the nit-pickers (most notably some spell-checker homonyms, such as “shoot” for a short piece of straight race track, and the ‘artistic license’ of a Panamera with launch control leaving black stripes on the pavement ), but such will no doubt be trivial distractions (if noticed at all) to the average reader so engrossed will he/she be in the dynamic events in these tales. Fast paced action and vivid descriptions make these books hard to put down. These adventure novels are very entertaining for anyone, but especially for someone interested in driving, or shooting, or even international intrigue. The is lots of Porsche content, and overall there is a sense of realism in the descriptions not present in the average ‘mystery’ novel. They are sufficiently captivating to provide an effective distraction from the constraints of everyday life. The Marc Lange novels are paperbacks with roughly 400, 5x8 inch pages of text, (including an appendix of terms in books 1 & 2). They are printed in a unique and very readable font. Pictures of Porsches adorn the front and back covers but therre are other photos. The books in this series should be available for $14.95 from your favorite bookseller (ask for them) or from Amazon Books (search on RL Turner) https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rl+turner+The+Driver&i= stripbooks&crid=6R3GBLU7WTIO&sprefix=rl+turner+ the+driver%2Cstripbooks%2C120&ref=nb_sb_noss

AZPCA AUTOCROSS SEASON EVENT #6 STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL PHOTOS BY JAN NYQUIST
T
he AZPCA Region hosted the 6th autocross event of the 2021-2022 Season on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP) in Litchfield Park. The next two events in April will be the last events of this season. As in the past events, the events may be sold-out weeks before the event. If you are planning to attend, please sign up now to prevent from being placed on the waitlist. This event was held seventeen days after Ground Hog Day. Did you know that Ground Hog Day is a German tradition known as Badger Day (in German the tradition is called “Dachstag”)? According to the reaction of Punxsutawney Phil, the weather prediction for the remainder of this 2021-2022 AZPCA Region Autocross Season is – “it will be perfect in the Land of AZPCA Autocrossing”. On the morning of the event, the weather was a bit cool but, it warmed up to be a very nice AZPCA Autocross Day with 81 degrees. 41 drivers enjoyed another great course designed by the Autocross Chair Kim K. The course designer from the previous event is still a mystery and a rumor has it this Mystery Course Designer may be designing another fun-packed course in the very near future. This course design style was a little different than we have experienced with the past events. This course traversed through a gamut of cones in a clockwise direction. There was the usual showcase front straightaway through the start/finish, 4 sweepers, several slaloms, and a few gate elements. This course was longer in distance, and it took an average of 9 seconds more to negotiate this course as compared to the previous courses. The drivers in the morning session drove four separately timed laps and three separately timed laps in the afternoon session. This course was physically demanding but, all in all, it was a fun course. There were no first-time AZPCA Region members attending this event, however, our first-time driver/member from the January event, Guillermo P.-V. joined us again for this event. Obviously, Guillermo must have had a great time and he elected to come back for some more fun.
| 20 |
Chad S. and his Wife, Lisa, from El Paso, TX, are members with the West Texas Region, and they decided to join in on the fun. Chad drove his 2016 Porsche GT3 RS and his best laptime was 53.918 seconds. Chad mentioned that the AZPCA Region event format was a little challenging and unique but, he still had fun at the event. AZPCA Region would like to thank Chad and Lisa for joining in on the fun and we hope they enjoyed the event and will come back and join us again. The drivers were treated to another great tasting BBQ lunch provided by the Region. During the lunch break the drivers were talking about the course design and how challenging the course was. Some of the drivers were wondering if the course was designed by the Mystery Course Designer again. There was a good contingent of Porsche cars at this event. There was a 914, 968, several Boxsters, Caymans, and Carreras; two GT3 RSs, and a Macan.

Both Kim and Eric were clean on all their runs. Martin R., in his 2007 Porsche Cayman S, was chasing Eric with a 53.116 run.

Ealing had several gremlins riding along with him and his Group “X” car was not happy. If it wasn’t for the gremlins, he would have been blazing faster. There is no doubt that Ealing will find those gremlins and eradicate them by the next event.

Jonathan B. was gremlin and Porsche Crest Sticker free, and his best time was 53.413 seconds followed by Mathias A. with a 54.929 second run. Both Jonathan and Mathias were clean on all their runs. This event only had 11 “Cone Kills” which is “par for the course” [yes-pun]. Eric T. led the “Cone Kill” count and was dirty with three “Cone Kills”. Eric was dirty on two of his afternoons runs. Chularat H. and Marc T. had two “Kills” each. Chularat’s two “Kills” came on separate runs in the afternoon session and Marc’s “Kills” were one in each session.

We are nearing the completion of the 2021-2022 AZPCA Region Autocross Season with two remaining events in April. The two dates are April 9, and the 30th. If you haven’t been to an autocross event, this is the time to sign up as a driver, or a “Taste of Autocross”, or be a volunteer.

A “Taste of Autocross” is a PCA Program to allow the members to be part of an event without the driving part. You will be allowed to ride along with an experience driver or instructor to experience how much fun you could have if you were driving your Porsche Car.

AZPCA AUTOCROSS EVENT #6 Continued from page 21 Also, if you elect to work, this will allow you to be assigned to a workstation and be partnered with an experience worker to see what is involved working the event. A “Taste of Autocross” could be a fun-packed experience before you decide to try the driving part. The “Taste of Autocross” entry fee is only $15.00 and that includes the Region provided lunch.
If any member is contemplating about driving their car at an autocross event and/or have any questions regarding the operation of the event, please do not hesitate to contact the Autocross Chairs at autocross@az.pca.org. They are more-than-willing to answer any question you may have. We hope to see you at the next event.
Also, a member can volunteer at “No Cost” to help with the event logistics. Due to there is no fee collected from the member, being a volunteer does not qualify to receive the Region provided lunch. If you would like to volunteer and help out, please email the Autocross Chairs, Kim K. or Rick A., at autocross@az.pca. org to let them know that you would like to volunteer and they will send you the Speedwaiver Link for the event. If you want to join in on all the fun, you will need to log-on to your MotorsportReg (MSR) account and sign-up.
