2025 CALENDAR OF EVENTS
PRESIDENT’S NOTE
2024 is a wrap!
I hope everyone had an enjoyable year and holiday season. I’m looking forward to 2025 and serving as your President for the next two years.
First, I want to extend thanks to Mark Manente for serving as AZPCA’s President these past two years. Additionally, Angela Manente for stepping in as Membership chairperson for the better part of 2024. They have both contributed so much of their time and energy to the club over the years in various roles. Undoubtedly, they’ll be enjoying some wellearned RnR, and I hope they know how much their efforts have been appreciated. Our Board for 2025 will see a couple of changes. Andy Cole, a past director in 2022–2023, is now serving as Vice President. Kenny Mitchell and Frank Grimmelman, Directors at Large, both successfully ran for another two-year term. I applaud them for their dedication to the club. Kenny also volunteers his time at the club’s Autocross and HPDE events, writes for our newsletter, and manages the club’s email communications. Frank, meanwhile, organizes Porsche and Pancakes (PnP) events and the annual Vegas Fun Run driving tour. In fact, all of our board members contribute their time and energy to other aspects of the club beyond their director roles.
At every membership meeting, we share the current count of primary and affiliate members. At the end of 2024, AZPCA stood at 2,653 members total. Among 147 regions across the U.S., our numbers place us well above average among the highest. While that’s an impressive statistic to hang onto, I think it’s even more important to understand why our members join and what they hope to gain from being part of PCA.
Every PCA membership begins with joining the national club, after which members are assigned to a region. While our region already participates in many activities PCA National recognizes such as Social Events, Driving Tours, Concours, AutoX, HPDE, and Time Trials there are other categories still on the table. These include Rallies, Tech Sessions, Club Racing, Street Survival for Teens, Porsche Juniors events, and likely others. Additionally, there are endless possibilities within the Social Events category.
I, along with others, am eager to know what our members would like to see more (or less) of from the club. Did you join PCA because you bought a Porsche and the magazine sounded nice, or was there more to it? Stay tuned for an upcoming comprehensive membership survey, which will be emailed to all our members. Your feedback will help us improve the membership experience in our region.
I’d like to recognize the individuals who stepped up in 2024 as new chairpersons or have agreed to serve in 2025:
• Travis Sutton – Club Equipment Chair
• Deb Rettew – Social Events Chair
• Mark Baker – Membership Chair
• Andy Cole and Kellie Bouet – Concours Co-Chairs
Additionally, Kim Kemper and Rick Althouse will be passing the Autocross reins to Ealing Jahn at the conclusion of the April 2025 event. Without members willing to take on these leadership roles, events would not happen or only with greater difficulty.
It’s also definitely worth noting that there is typically a team of volunteers under each chairperson, contributing to the success of each event. I can’t even count the number of people who have helped me over the years to successfully run a club HPDE event it typically takes 10 -20 volunteers for each event! These individuals deserve much of the credit. I can’t thank them enough for the help they provide it’s incredible that people are willing to step up and give their time for others.
If you’re ever interested in helping the club or find yourself thinking, “I could show them how to do that better,” please reach out to me. Expertise is always welcome!
With that, I hope to see you at an upcoming event. I’ll be at our first event of the year: the Jan. 4 HPDE & Time Trial at Podium Club and then onward to our membership meeting on Jan. 8 at Raven’s Gastropub. -Dan Bouet
From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull
As our new year opens up, we have our new President Dan Bouet as well as some new Board members that will continue to help our club create an inclusive, fun and informative place for all of our members.
We have some exciting events coming up in January, including the monthly members meeting at Raven Gastropub and a driving tour around Fountain Hills on Sunday January 12th. There is also a ladies luncheon happening this month - don't forget to head over to MSR to register.
Christmas is now over, and the memories we made with our friends and family are so valuable. Just like the memories we make with our AZPCA friends and family when we take the time to connect and participate. The New Year gives us the time to reflect on 2024, and look forward to exploring new opportunities, friends and Porsche club family too!!
If the weather holds, we can enjoy some spectacular drives in our great state of Arizona this month including an off road one! What a great time to meet up and get out together seeing the sites in perfect weather!! Not too hot and certainly for us northerners, not too cold either!
We are looking forward to 2025 and all of the adventures that are just around the corner, and some that we don't even have planned yet. An open mind, and an open heart will allow us to be present, and take advantage of every opportunity to experience life that we get. Quiet coffees with our club friends, epic drives in Arizona and adjoining states such as Nevada, off road adventures, learning new skills at the track and through Driver Education and just having fun with like-minded friends. All of these are possible with your AZPCA membership and participation!
We look forward to seeing more of you in the coming year! Happy New Year, Feliz Navidad, Bonne Annee and more to each of you!

Driving Tour Review - Prescott Holiday Lights
Our recent drive to Prescott was nothing short of spectacular, marking our very first experience participating in one of the club’s organized drives. It was truly thrilling to see all the Porsches gathered together, a vibrant mix of models and colors, all sharing the same passion for the road.
Driving our Porsche Cayman S along the winding roads was an eye-opening experience. We had the chance to really learn how the car grips those curves with ease and precision, making the journey as exhilarating as it was scenic. Along the way, we made a pit stop to stretch our legs and catch up with fellow members, giving us the perfect opportunity to meet some of the amazing people in the club.
When we arrived in Prescott (a little early, thanks to what the lead car jokingly called our “spirited pace”), we had time to explore the charming square. From handmade ironwork to glass-blown cacti, the local artistry added a special touch to the afternoon
Dinner with the group was a wonderful chance to chat and share stories, but the evening wasn’t over yet. My fiancé and I made our way around the square and to the iconic Palace bar for a nightcap, soaking in the lively atmosphere and history of the area.
The next morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the Hassayampa Inn, complete with lemon ricotta pancakes and corned beef hash. We even bumped into a few more club members, which made the morning even better.
For our return trip, we took the scenic route through Jerome, carving through some truly fun roads on our way back home. Testing the Cayman’s capabilities on those stretches was an absolute highlight.
Overall, this drive to Prescott was a fantastic introduction to the club, filled with beautiful scenery, great company, and a chance to truly enjoy our Porsche. It was our first drive, but it certainly won’t be our last!

Bruce’s BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES
BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF AMC CARS: American Motors Corporation 1954-1988, by Patrick R. Foster & Tom latch, published October 19 2024 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA
This book covers all AMC cars, from the Ambassador, through AMX Javelin, Gremlin, and Rambler and even the Jeep. It is a complicated story of corporate ownership and vehicle nameplates and configurations. For those new to the era of Classic cars who come to wonder 'what ever happened to Packard (or Hudson)', the answer is Nash, as for the next question, this book tells the fascinating story of American Motors and how it came (and ceased) to be. The complexities of the mergers and acquisitions and badge-engineering of car companies are discussed in sometimes intimate detail. This reviewer, however, wishes that there had been a summary chart, or tabulation of 'begats', to help understand all the branches on the American Motors family tree.
Nash, et al, are described as being responsible for initiating many features that are common place today – effective auto air conditioning, , wraparound windshields, and of course, the seats that converted into a bed that were an infamous feature of the '50s Nashs. An 'explanation' is given for why Nashes were once known for an envelope body enclosing the wheels that resulted in what was arguably the largest turning radius in the world. No commentary is given about any correlation between the multiple antecedents to AMC's final failure and its remoteness from 'Detroit'.
Eye opening to some (many?) will be the chapter on racing involvement of the 'American Motors cars. There interesting stories about their active involvement in NASCAR, Short Track, IndyCar and NHRA events.
Over all, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF AMC CARS is a basically chronological collection of very readable articles about a variety of care makes and the individual companies that made them. Since these are cars that are basically unfamiliar to current generations, but were in many ways avant garde for their time, it could almost be classified as a history book. It was certainly educational to this reviewer who lived through the time when Nashs (and Studebakers) were commonplace.
Very well illustrated, mostly with factory graphics and sales brochure photos. Under the dust jacket there is a photographic front cover showing a car with hood up, and a display of vehicles on the back. The end papers show different factory scenes front and back.
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF AMC CARS consists of 240, 8x9 inch, profusely illustrated, heavyweight matte pages. There is an extensive, 5 page 3 column index. By the time you read this it should be available for $50.00 from your favorite bookseller, or from Quarto.com
Bruce’s BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES
NOTICE - I am retiring from regular book reviews, effective 16 Dec 2024. It sometimes seems I have been doing these all my life but it was actually in 2008 that Skip Carter got me started in doing book reviews for his 'rag'. It has been very interesting to read all the books I have reviewed; some I would like to re-read. But life stays busy and my productivity is declining. In 2025 I will be focusing on personal projects (including sale of a 2006 Cayman S, a 1968 912 and a 31 Model A (12 volt), if anyone is interested. When (I say optimistically) any interesting books come along, I will provide reviews on a very random schedule.
Bruce Herrington got hooked on Porsches from an early ‘50s Road&Track featuring a 550 Spyder. In 1959 he managed to swap a ‘57 Beetle for a ‘51 356 split-windshield coupe. Since ‘63, when he acquired a ‘57 Speedster as a cheap toy to play with, he has had at least 2 Porsches in his stable. He has raced with VARA, was a Zone 8 Autocross Class Champion in the ‘90s but tends to spend as much time ‘wrenching’ as driving. For many years he was a member of Riverside Region, as Newsletter Editor, President and Timeline Coordinator. He is now a member of Orange Coast Region, but spends half of his time at his wife’s Grandparent’s house in Kansas. He started writing ‘Book Reviews for Porschephiles’ in 2008
Danielle’s Column - What is it about Greatness?
STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
So, I just watched the final F1 race of the season, from Abu Dhabi. Lewis came from 16 th place on the grid to fourth, passing teammate George Russell near the end of the last lap. On the cool-down lap, he did doughnuts and parked his Mercedes on the track, a short way behind the top three finishers, who were in their traditional celebratory spots. I’d never seen that before.
Lewis got out of his car, tapped the bodywork, knelt and … who knows what he said … a muttered thank you to the multitudes who brought him six of seven world championships, to date? An “I’ll be seeing you” to Toto? An “I see red” to his future at Ferrari? We couldn’t lipread, he still had his helmet on.
And we never got a post-race interview with him. Because he made a beeline for the team garage, I assume to thank those multitudes. It was somehow very poignant.
I’m a big fan. Of his talent. Of how he overcame the doubters and the prejudice. Of the support he got from his family to come up from … not much … in, let’s face it, a rich man’s sport. Of his humanism. Of his respect for tradition. Especially the tradition of the sport.
A note on that. Did you see him go berserk after winning his home British Grand Prix at Silverstone this year? Did you see him lap Interlagos this year in Senna’s McLaren? Magic. It’s all magic. Like Tiger’s “better than most” putt. Like Jordan taunting his defender and then shooting a jumper over his head. Like Ali doing his shuffle.
That’s what the great ones do. And it makes them iconic.
How? Part of the answer is in an interview I saw with James Vowles, now Team Principal at Williams and formerly the motorsport strategy director at Mercedes. He said that what made Lewis really stand out, particularly in qualifying, was his ability to get the most out of his car. But that statement gives him short shrift. What he actually did was to, first, learn a track much faster than most. And then he would fiddle with all those controls on the steering wheel, to see what edge they would give him – searching for the limit with this setting, with that setting, by constantly experimenting.
According to Vowles, who should know, Lewis drove the team crazy. There was never a baseline. Never a simple, stepped, direct link to what x did to the car, or y. To Lewis, telemetry be damned. Because he was constantly fiddling, fiddling, fiddling. To get the most out of the machine. And nobody else did that.
The following comment put him over the top in my mind A few years ago, in this space, I covered an interview he did. And the thing that stood out the most was that he wished race cars still had manual gearboxes. I mean, right? There’s a good chance that some of the younger drivers on the F1 grid today have never driven a race car with a stick shift. Not Lewis. And that’s not lost on him.
Danielle’s Column - What is it about Greatness?
But time marches on, inexorably. Are you familiar with the “Master Class” series? A friend sent me a link to one on Lewis. The title is “Lewis Hamilton – Teaches a Winning Mindset.” It’s a couple years old now, but the content … well, the content just elaborates on the theme of what it takes to achieve greatness.
The first chapter, titled “Meet Your Instructor,” has a subhead that reads “From child prodigy to racing legend to social justice leader, the British driver’s journey has always been about more than just speed.”
There’s even a two-page spread called “Total Control” that lays out an F1 steering wheel, circa 2018, and explains what all the buttons and controls do.
But the heart of the piece, all 36 pages, is found deep inside, in a chapter titled “Establishing a Winning Mindset.” To quote, “Lewis is adamant about what it takes to be the best, and he doesn’t mince words: ‘Mental preparation is absolutely everything.’”
I can’t argue with that. Years ago, my company brought in a former ad agency head, very successful, to tell us how to make an effective presentation or sales pitch. He said, you know how some people seem to move through, smoothly and emphatically, drawing you in and winning you over? You know how that happens? By practicing, again and again, late into the evening, the night before. That’s how you make it look easy.
The final page of the Master Class is one quote from Lewis, “You can’t change the past. It’s behind you. All you can do is prepare yourself to shape the future.” Amen. Here’s to greatness.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information
AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event Cancellation Policy
Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.
Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:
Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”
Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.
IMPORTANT AZPCA Information
Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:
1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.
2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.
3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).
4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).
5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Engine Oil
Engine Oil in Your Porsche
by scott mcilvain and greg mannion
The purpose of engine oil is to cool and lubricate the engine’s moving parts. The oil should be checked regularly and kept at the required level. modern engine oils contain a base oil with additives to keep the engine clean, neutralize the combustion soot and protect against corrosion. other additives reduce the amount of oil foaming, decrease the pour point and modify the viscosity of the engine oil at various temperatures to maintain proper lubrication. current engine oils meet stringent emission guidelines and improve mileage by keeping friction to a minimum.
All current engine oils must meet industry specific test requirements which include: rust inhibition, oxidation control, sludge and varnish control, wear control, bearing corrosion resistance, fuel economy, low temperature oil thickening and oxidation control. The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is responsible for the creation of passenger car engine oil specifications. ACEA is the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association which sets European specifications. The American Petroleum Institute (API) licenses and monitors the quality of engine oils in the marketplace.
oil and cause it to reduce its viscosity (become thinner) as the engine warms up. Engine design and oil cooling radiators (if used) will allow an engine oil to only reach a safe maximum operating temperature. This is why it is critical that the proper viscosity engine oil as specified in the owner’s manual is used.
Here is a chart that shows the viscosity (thickness) of the oil at
Engine oils are generally identified by viscosity expressed in a SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) classification. SAE measures oil viscosity at 0°F and 212°F. A year-round engine oil will have a multi-grade designation such as “0W-40”. All motor oils meeting this designation will have the same viscosity curve over the engine operating temperature range and are interchangeable. Mobil 1 0W-40 is currently the factory fill oil for the Porsche 911.One should use the oil viscosity recommended in the owner’s manual for optimal performance. Please note that single grade oils are not recommended for use in current Porsche engines.
Motor oil is thickest (most viscous) at lower temperatures. The lowest temperature the engine will face is at start up. The greatest wear on the engine occurs at startup when frictional forces are the greatest. Frictional forces then heat the engine
various operating temperatures of the engine. Once the engine is at operating temperature the viscosity of the engine oil remains constant. This is due to the viscosity modifier additive content of the engine oil. Viscosity modifiers are generally olefin copolymers. This is a rubber-like substance that is used in very low quantities. This substance functions like a coiled spring in the sense that the molecule is small at colder temperatures and larger at higher temperatures. The viscosity modifier allows the engine oil to flow at colder temperatures and to not get too thin at higher temperatures.
The question of “Should I use a synthetic oil in my engine?” is frequently asked. The chances are that if you have a vehicle produced within the last ten years and you are using a multi-grade engine oil, you are already using a synthetic oil. Synthetic merely refers to something
McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Engine Oil
that does not naturally occur. A regular base oil is simply distilled from crude oil and is graded by viscosity. A synthetic base oil can also be derived from crude oil but then has an additional refining process that makes it into a product with very specific properties which could not occur naturally. These products are referred to as Group III base oils. Other products used as synthetic base oils are poly alpha olefins (PAO) and diester fluids. Synthetic based engine oils will outperform traditional base oils by reducing friction and staying “in grade” for a longer period of time.
The question of “Should I routinely test my engine oil?” is often asked. The answer is if one changes the oil as recommended by the manufacturer, then no. Generally the cost of the engine oil monitoring service quickly exceeds the cost of a new oil change. The exception to this would be if one is experiencing engine wear or if one is looking to trouble shoot a specific engine wear issue ,then the cost may be justified as a problem solving tool.
Aftermarket engine oil additives can void the Porsche warranty. A good quality name brand engine oil is manufactured to meet the auto manufacturer’s requirements. Additional chemical treatment is not necessary. The engine oils marketed for high mileage engines (over 75,000 miles) contain additional additives to compensate for possible engine wear due to high mileage.
The current US engine oil designations are SN/GF-5. Additional ACEA and Porsche designations may also be listed.
What does the future of engine oils look like? Engine oils are constantly being improved upon to help reduce emissions and increase mileage. Europe tends to focus on emission reduction while the USA tends to focus on mileage improvement. The next industry wide change for engine oil is scheduled to occur after January 1, 2017. These oils will have an SAE designation of “0W-16”. Whereas many years ago engine oil wear reduction was primarily controlled by viscosity, that is no longer the case. Modern engine oils control wear reduction by use of specific chemical additives, thus allowing the reduction in viscosity which leads to a reduction in friction, which provides improved mileage. Engine oils will become less viscous (thinner) with improved additive technology.
This article dealt with engine oils for Porsche gasoline engines. Diesel engine oil requirements are fundamentally the same but there is a difference in viscosity requirements and product labeling. Diesel engines need to use the designated oil as specified in the owner’s manual.
Greg Mannion has spent his professional career in the petrochemical industry. Early in his career he worked for a major
oil company and then an independent oil blender. Most of his career has been marketing performance additives for fuels and various industrial lubricants including automotive and diesel engine oils.

Stuttgart Market Letter
Written by David K. Whitlock
So far, the theme for 2024 has been Dollar Volume and Unit Volume up, Sell-Through Rate down, as more cars have hit the market this year, but just haven’t been selling. Well, November took quite the U-turn with our first year-over-year Sell-Through Rate (STR) increase in quite some time, despite Dollar and Unit Volumes declining, with 69% of the 537 cars on offer selling for a total of $36,536,798. But what’s really interesting, is the fact that the STR increased not because sellers set more realistic reserves, but because bids appear to be rebounding.
Take for instance the 356 market, one that has been struggling over the past few months. In 2024, only one 356B T5 Cabriolet had sold above the $140,000 mark whereas last year, we had four. But this month, a beautiful Bali Blue example brought an impressive $177,800, marking a significant above-average sale. We also saw a standard, run-of-the-mill 1965 356C hammer at a final bid of $118,000, $25,000 over the twelve-month average.
Porsche’s 356-powered 912 also saw gains over previous months with three SWB Coupes all selling for a good clip over the $48,000 average. Leading the pack was a one-owner 1965 912 finished in Signal Red over Black that had been driven approximately 325,000 miles and included service records dating back to the 1960s. This gem sold at a final bid of $82,000. But that price was eclipsed, and rightfully so, by a 1968 Soft-Window Targa at $95,500. Finished in Irish Green over Black, this 912 Targa had remained with its original owner up until 2023, when it was acquired by the seller.
911SCs also looked up this month after a year of slowing with two strong examples bringing exceptional bids. A 117,000-mile 1978 Coupe finished in Mocha Black with a Cork leather and Tartan cloth interior hammered at the second highest price we’ve seen all year at $105,000. This was despite some noted paintwork and an updated rear decklid with whale tail spoiler. Also jumping averages was a Black on Gray 92,000-mile Weissach Edition that brought $70,000 even though it had its issues as well.
But although many markets started to show signs of a bit of a rebound, some newer cars continued their slide, with GT4 RS’ leading the way as only one of the three cars on offer found a home at a sub-$200,000 bid of $191,000, which is the second lowest price we’ve seen for an example here in the US thus far. On the new 911 side of the market, 992 GT3 RS’ also fared poorly with both cars on offer failing to sell at bids of $310,000 and $392,000. It looks like the days of a GT3 RS selling for over $400,000 are behind us unless it’s a 1-of-150 Carrera RS Tribute Package car.
Stuttgart Market Letter
At the tippy-top of the market, we had a mixed bag of sorts. On one hand, we had a 170-mile 918 Spyder with Weissach Package sell at $2,690,000 all-in, which is a little light compared to a 457mile example that sold for $2,865,000 back in April, and this month’s car was in a much better spec, in my opinion. And then there was the 267-mile 2005 Carrera GT that sold for $2,025,000 all-in, a price we haven’t seen since March of 2022.
It will be interesting to see how the year ends here in December. So far, all signs point to a continuation of November, but then again, I’m writing this only three days into the month. If it does, what does that mean for the spring market? Things could be heating back up.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!
Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.
For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.
Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.
While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.
How is a typical HPDE day structured?
A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.
The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.
The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.
What do you need to bring?
Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)
We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.
Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.
There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.
Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!
2024-2025 ARIZONA REGION AUTOCROSS SEASON EVENT #3
There were no cold elements associated with the Arizona Region Autocross Event held on December 21, 2024, the first day of Arizona Winter, Winter Solstice Day, the longest night and shortest day of the year. The course went “Hot” at about 8:30 AM with thirty-seven drivers (20-members & 17-guests), and the weather was Arizona perfect with the temperature in the mid-80s during the day
Eight of the twenty members are essentially new Porsche Club of America (PCA) members with less than sixteen months of membership. The newest member is Alex B. (six-months), driving his 2020 Carrera S; followed by James H. (eight-months), driving his 2015 Cayman GTS; and Farzam & Arena M. (ten-months), driving their 2023 Boxster GTS.
Bruce B. was celebrating his first-year anniversary with the Club, and he was driving his 2024 Cayman GTS; Charles R. (fifteen months), was driving his 2010 Carrera; and Yuri & Isabelle E. (sixteen months), were driving their family Group “X” German model car. These new members were no doubt having a great time and drove very well.
The drivers ran three laps in the morning session and four laps in the afternoon session and the course ran in a clockwise direction and had a loop/cross-over and several gates, and a mini-sweeper. Entry into and around the loop required you to use good speed maintenance and as the drivers exited the loop there was a short sprint through some gates before the final right-hand turn to the start/finish line.
After the gates, the final corner required you to exercise good braking skills and an extreme amount of patience for maneuvering around the apex cone or you would exit the corner extremely wide to the driver’s left causing you to maneuver back over to the driver’s right to drive around a mandatory course delineator, which caused you to lose valuable time. And, if you accelerated too early off the final corner, it was likely that you would end up not in full control with a hand-full of the steering wheel which also would add valuable time to your run. In this instance, sometimes “slow is fast” and “fast is slow”, and an extreme amount of patience will reward you.
The course was not totally cone kill free, but the event was a low maintenance event insofar as there were very few cone mutilations. Only 14 cones were squished by ten drivers, which is relatively low. The cones were a lot happier throughout this event.
There were sixteen drivers in Group “P” (Porsche Cars), Eight-Boxster/Cayman types, Seven-Carreras, and one-lonely 968. Jonathan B., driving his Lizard Green 2019 GT3 RS, lead the Group “P” group drivers with his best laptime of 45.796 seconds which he drove on his 4th afternoon run. Eric S. drove his 2006 Carrera Outlaw with a best run of 46.855 seconds from the morning session; and Eric T.’s son, Andrew, snuck his dad’s 2014 Cayman S out while his dad was out-of-town, and drove his best run on his third morning session run. (Maybe we shouldn’t print this, but I’m sure that Eric did this with his dad’s car, didn’t we all do this?)
There were six members driving their non-Porsche cars in Group “X”. Group “X” comprises of various vehicle make and models with disparate performance differences that do not reflect each Driver’s competition skills, thus the lap times should not be judged.
Although, the Group “X” driver’s times do not actually reflect who would be the fastest/hotshoe driver like if they were driving similar or even Porsche cars, they are still discussed amongst “all” the drivers for strictly bragging and chest pounding rights, big smiles, and the feel-good factor, at least until the end of the day.
The fastest Group “X” driver was Ealing J. with his best of 47.11 seconds, he ran on his second lap in the afternoon session; followed by Travis M. that he drove on his second afternoon lap with 47.498 seconds. Yuri M. drove a 50.353 second run on his third lap in the afternoon session.
The next event is scheduled on Saturday, January 11, 2025, to be held at the Arizona Motorsport Park in Litchfield Park. You can sign up as a driver and can include a PCA “Taste of Autocross” entrant Guests and all family members are welcome, providing each guest is signed up during the pre-registration and electronically signs the on-line PCA Speedwaiver
A “Taste of Autocross” entry is for non-driving participant who is at least 18 years old to experience being a passenger in an Instructor’s Car, and all the aspects of the PCA autocross program. In addition to being a passenger, you can experience a course work assignment with an experienced course worker. The Taste of Autocross fee to signup is $10.00. Entry process is through the driver of the car and the driver pays the fee.
For information and to register for the next event, please click on the cone that saw Jonathan B. approaching
As of this writing, December 23, 2024, the event registration is already half-full. The registration for the first event in the new year will go fast so do not hesitate and end up on the waitlist. Signup now by clicking on the above cone.

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model
The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.
CHECK OUT THE REGISTRIES AT: www.pca.org/connect/special-interest-groups
Through the Ages now features the latest club events and programs
New for 2025, the Porsche Club of America History Book contains an overview of the club’s history, followed by individual sections covering specific detailed items. Some sections were designed for use as standalone articles for region newsletters. Individual chapters and page numbers can be “clicked on” from the contents page. Major National Awards are also included.
