For a complete list of all upcoming events please visit our calendar website: https://az.pca.org/events/ **Please Note: Dates and times are subject to change**
Our year at AZPCA is off to a fantastic start! January was packed with seven diverse events: an HPDE/Time Trial, Membership Meeting, AutoX, Driving Tour, Ladies’ Brunch, Porsches and Pancakes, and an Off-Road Tour. I hope you had the chance to participate in at least one of these. A big thank you to all the individuals who worked hard to make these events happen!
Our region is part of PCA’s “Zone 8,” which includes 15 other regions across Arizona, Southern Nevada, and Southern California. Every January, leadership from Zone 8 gathers for a meeting. While much of the meeting focuses on top-down policies, it also provides an opportunity to share ideas and compare notes with other regions. The positive takeaways for our region are that we remain highly active, financially sound, and fully compliant with PCA guidelines.
Although Arizona is somewhat geographically isolated from the large, active California regions, anyone interested in exploring other Zone 8 events can find them listed at zone8.pca.org. For example, myself, and some others from AZPCA attended an HPDE/Time Trials held by the San Diego region on Jan 18-19. While their registration process was a bit more involved than expected, the event itself was very well organized, and most importantly, the fun factor was high! Kenny Mitchell, our Communications Director, ensures all our regional events are submitted to the Zone 8 calendar as well.
Our club is currently planning New Members’ Day for mid-March. This event is designed to introduce new AZPCA members to everything the club has to offer, but ALL members are highly encouraged to attend. It’s a great opportunity to represent the club, welcome new members, and perhaps learn something new or develop new friendships. Stay tuned for an announcement with the finalized date and location soon.
I hope to see you at a future event!
Dan Bouet
From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull
It’s hard to believe January has come and gone so quickly, time does seem to fly as they say.
For car enthusiasts January means Arizona Auctions and Autoweek activities, this year was no exception with The Arizona Concours d’ Elegance kicking things off and the world-famous Barrett Jackson Auction, RM Sotheby’s, Bonhams, MAG Auctions, Hagarty’s Cars & Conversations, OTTO Car Club’s Bagels & Bull**** as they so aptly named it and many more activities to keep us out and about enjoying the Arizona sunshine.
January was a busy month for both the Autocross and HPDE groups, both hosted events and the attendance, as usual, was excellent.
As far as driving tours go, we had 2 to choose from this month, first up was the always popular Scenic Drive to Fountain Hills and then Steve Sapareto hosted the annual Off-Road tour, which this year took us along the old Apache Trail which had been closed for the last few years.
The Club social scene was not to be outdone either, we were treated to a fantastic Monthly Meeting at Raven Gastropub, Brian and his staff outdid themselves as usual.
The Ladies-Only brunch was another highlight of the month, the Ladies were treated to a very tasty meal at Soul Café. The Porsches n’ Pancakes was held at Gertrude’s at the Botanical Garden, what a great way to spend the morning.
Keep a few days clear on your February calendar for some truly exciting events this month, first, we kick things off at Lucille’s Bar-B-Que for our monthly meeting, we have an interesting driving tour to Maricopa and the West Valley Loop. We have an Autocross event at AMP and the Ladies have a fun drive planned too. Porsches n’ Pancakes sees us at Rock Springs Café.
If you have any time left please visit the wonderful charity event, Concours in the Hills, which is held at Fountain Hill’s Fountain Park on Saturday, February 15th and keep an eye out for some of the AZPCA members’ cars which will proudly be on display on the grassy hills.

Coffee and pastries will be available to start and water and soft drinks all day for those showing their cars. AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above.
It has come to the Region’s attention that several hundred members are not receiving the AZPCA Region’s eNews email blasts. This may be because the PCA National Office may not have your correct email address or there may be a technical problem with your email address. Or the member at one time elected to opt out of receiving the emails and would like to begin receiving them.
AZPCA Region would like to help the members in resolving this issue of you not receiving the eNews emails. If you are not receiving any of the emails that are labeled with the above banner, and prefer to receive them, please email the Region’s Communications Chair, Kenny Mitchell at kenmitchell-director@az.pca.org

La Posada Ladies-Only Overnight Drive
April 26-27, 2025
This April overnight event is for the ladies only!
After a beautiful drive up from the Valley on Saturday morning, we will stop for lunch along the way to Winslow, Arizona, for an overnight stay and dinner at the La Posada Hotel.
La Posada, “the resting place,” was one of the finest hotels ever built in the Southwest when it opened in 1930. And this historic hotel on Route 66 is still charming after all this time. Rooms have been restored carefully, and many pieces of the Mary Colter design remain, along with extensive artwork and gardens throughout the property. There is also a large trading post on site full of southwest treasures. Visit https://laposada.org for more info.
After settling in, we will gather for an extended informal Happy Hour, then enjoy dinner at the famous and beautiful Turquoise Room for southwest contemporary cuisine. https://theturquoiseroom.com
On Sunday, we will gather at the legendary landmark, Standin’ on the Corner Park, for a group photo. The park has captured the hearts and imaginations of music lovers and road-trippers alike along Route 66. Made famous by the Eagles’ hit song, it is a must-see!

STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
Let’s all turn the wayback machine to when Baby Boomers began coming of age, to the early ‘60s. Ok, from a do-run-run automotive style standpoint, what comes to mind?
I’ll take three, please. As the leader of the pack, I would watusi up to the Jaguar E-Type, from 1961. If only because none other than Enzo Ferrari allegedly called it the most beautiful car ever designed, at least to that point.
Who can argue with Il Commendatore? Even though one could see the derivation from the DType racers and their stillborn XK-SS street version. No matter. It was, and probably still is, the ultimate chick magnet. In some circles, that alone puts it at the top of the heap.
Second, I’ll take the C2 Corvette, specifically the split-window coupe. Remember, this was 1963, the roads were chock-a-block with mastodons, Sedan de Villes, Imperials and the like. I remember spying my first C2, out there, in the wild. I almost did a head-over-heels stoppie on my banana-seat Schwinn.
I admit, my memories are swayed by the fact that, a few years later, my uncle bought a ’66 coupe, 327 auto, that he let me drive You remember? With the radio vertically integrated in the center stack? Wound it up, on the Wantagh State Parkway, heading to Jones Beach. Tack it up, tack it up, the windblast drowned out Hey Little Cobra. Could this be magic? It was.
Third, the original 911. I mean, hey, after all these generations, and models, and sub-models, nobody cannot tell a 911, any 911, from anything else on the road. Still. To this day. Who else, or what else, can say that? I’m waiting. Repeat after me, the 911 defines “iconic.” Kudos, Butzi Porsche.
Which is why it’s so disconcerting to me to see what’s going on today. Stop at a light, any light, and look around. What do you see? A sea of love? No! A sea of black, or white, or silver SUVs that … and, hey, probably like you, I could identify virtually every car on the road at five years old … today they all look, ok, I’ll say it, the same. I’m embarrassed to admit something It’s this. I’ve had to peek around the rear, in order to see the nameplate and identify the brand. Me. Probably you too. I’m ashamed.
Even exotics. This actually happened to me recently. I was walking my dog in my neighborhood and I saw a bright “rosso” …. Ferrari 296? … parked at the curb. I got closer and, my jaw dropped. No! It was a “Little Red Corvette!” A C8! What the … Had I completely lost my touch? I screamed “heel” and we did a quick three-point turn.
Apparently, this commonality, this, ok, I’ll say it, copy-cat derivative blandness, hasn’t gone without recognition, at least by some automotive design studios. At least two examples I’ve stumbled on recently come to mind.
The first is the “almost production” Honda 0 Saloon that has been making the car-show circuit. Now, from the side-view, it looks to me like a Lamborghini Espada that slipped into a galaxy
Danielle’s Column - Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
far, far away From the front, the headlights lie flat, above the grill, like, let’s pause for reverence, the Miura. Really.
Beneath it all lurks Honda’s next-gen EV platform. Which to me is fine, just fine. Reality may bite, but at least it may look good. One thing is for sure, neither you nor I will mistake it for anything else on the road. But, and it’s a big but. Would a five-year-old version of myself today stop in my tracks and start hyperventilating? I don’t know.
Nor do I know about the recently announced Jaguar rebranding. Like Honda, it’s all for its coming EV lineup. The first show-car iteration is called the Type 00. I’m not kidding. A coincidence with Honda? Do I see a raised eyebrow? I don’t know, but it’s not a good start Nonetheless, in a story in Business Insider, Jaguar’s chief exterior designer, Constantino Segui Gilabert, says “It is a dramatic presence, channeling a unique spirit of British creativity and originality. It celebrates art and embodies the essence of Exuberant Moderni sm.”
Like the SS 100? The XK 120, 140 and 150? The E -Type? Even the F-Type? Is Sir William Lyons rolling over in his grave? Or, is he saluting Jaguar’s new direction, from his perch in car design heaven? I don’t know. It’s hard to tell much, from the photos I’ve seen so far.
One thing is for sure. The EV ripple, or wave, depending on your point of view, is giving automotive designers a rare opportunity to add their names to the pantheon of Pininfarina, Giugiaro, Gandini, Mitchell, Shinoda, Sacco, Butzi and more … even Sir William. Will it work? Can it work today?
Ahh, change always leads us to the same place, doesn’t it. We’ll have to stay tuned. Because, once again, only time will tell. But I really would like to be five again, to see for myself.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies
BY Kimberly Amadeo, Arizona Region
et’s say you just got back from the Barrett-Jackson Auto Show with the car you dreamed of your whole life. Now you need a home with at least a 4-car garage. Where is the best place to look, how much can you expect to spend, and how much house do you get with your garage?
In Maricopa County, there are 1,010 homes with a 4-car garage or more. The locations range from Aquila in the northwest to Buckeye in the southwest, to San Tan Valley in the southeast to Rio Verde and Cave Creek. Prices range from $384,000 in Surprise to a $33.9 million dollar home in Paradise Valley.
The average sales price for a home with a 4-car garage is $3.7 million. The house is 5,102 square feet and it’s on the market for 123 days before it’s sold.
But what if you want to shelter more than 4 cars? Here’s a breakdown of homes by garage size.
Homes with Garages for 5 to 9 Cars
There are 321 homes for sale in Maricopa County with garages that hold between 5 to 9 cars. On average, they list for $4.6 million offering 5,674 square feet for the owners
The most luxurious is a home in Paradise Valley that lists for $33.9 million and offers a 6-car garage. Once it’s completed in 2026, it will have 12,500 square feet to house the humans. Both owners and cars can enjoy views of both Camelback and Mummy mountains.
A similarly-priced home is in Arcadia and offers an 8-car garage. It will be completed in 2025, and lists for an even $30 million. The humans get 8 bedrooms and can enjoy 15,000 square feet on 1.559 acres.
On the other end of the spectrum, you can park your 6 cars in a garage in Queen Creek for just $445,000. The humans get to live in a 1,440 square foot 2-bedroom home on an acre lot. Perfect if you need to build more garages to house more cars next year.
These are these extremes, but where are you most likely to find a home with this size garage? Head to Scottsdale, with 75 homes for sale. They range from $675,000 million at Hayden and Shea offering a 6-car garage to $29.5 million for a 5-car garage and home in Silverleaf at DC Ranch.
Paradise Valley has 47 homes, ranging from $1.75 million for a home with a 6-car garage to the $33.9 million home described above.
Phoenix comes next, offering 39 homes. They range from $595,000 for a 6-car garage to $899,000 for a 9-car garage to the $30 million home listed above.
Homes with 10-car Garages
What if a 9-car garage isn’t enough? There are 47 homes scattered throughout the Valley with garages that hold between 10 and 19 cars. Surprisingly, these homes are only slightly more expensive. They range from $875,000 to $28.9 million, with an average list price of $5.3 million. Scottsdale has 15 homes with these large garages, and most of them are near Pinnacle Peak.
The most affordable home is near Anthem. For $875,000, you get a 10-car garage with an additional 4 carport spaces. There’s also a 1,922 square foot, 3-bedroom house on an acre of land. You can find a 13-car garage at a 5-bedroom home in Mesa for $899,000. Buckeye has a nice 3-bedroom home with an 11-car garage for $920,000.
On the other end of the spectrum, the most expensive home in this category is (again) in Paradise Valley. There, you’ll find a 22,000 square foot home with a 14-car garage, 15 bedrooms, and 15 bathrooms. It’s on a 9-acre lot with it and lists for $28,900.
Homes with 20+ Car Garages
What if you already have a substantial collection, and this new purchase just pushed you over the 20-car point? You have a choice of 7 homes. The lowest price is $1.7 million in Aguila. It features 2 hangars where you can house either cars or your private plane. It's on a 5-acre lot and the home is 2,154 square feet.
Scottsdale has the most expensive home featuring a 20-car garage for $29.5 million. It has a 15,378 square foot home with 8 bedrooms on a 1.5 acre lot. The newly-built home offers both city and mountain views. (Source: Arizona Multiple Listing Service.)
What It Means to You
The Phoenix area is very friendly to car aficionados. You can find a home at nearly any price point to house both your family and your collection

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event Cancellation Policy
Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.
Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:
Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”
Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.
IMPORTANT AZPCA Information
Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:
1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.
2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.
3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Turbo Charging
Tech Tips
PORSCHE TURBOCHARGING
by Scott McIlvain, Tech Chair
Porsche Turbo, a name that is famous for speed and power. Since 1975 no car company has been better at turbocharging production cars. Every Porsche fan should experience the feel of “warp speed” when the turbo hit full boost in a Porsche at least once.
So we know Turbos make cars faster. But how do they work, and why are they so popular, soon to be standard in the latest 911? A turbo uses the exhaust gases that are exiting the engine to spin a “pin wheel.” This wheel is connected by a shaft to another “pin wheel.” This second wheel pulls air in and forces it into the engine.
The more air that goes into an engine, the more power can be made. Some highly-tuned turbo Porsches can make 1,500 hp or more! Because the exhaust gasses are coming out of the engine, turbos are known for being a very efficient, almost free, way to make more power.
There are some down sides to turbo, the biggest being turbo lag. The exhaust wheel of the turbo needs to spin very fast to spin the intake wheel to compress air to make power. This doesn’t happen instantly as any driver of an early 911 turbo knows. This lag can make the car challenging to drive. Another big problem with turbos is detonation cause by over boost. The pressure of the air going into the engine is called boost. The more boost the more power the engine can make. It is very important that the amount of boost matches the amount of fuel going into the engine or the engine will run lean. When this happens the engine can be damaged very quickly! Turbochargers compress the air which causes it to become very hot. This is why every Porsche Turbo from 1978 on comes standard with an intercooler. The
pressurized air goes through the intercool that works much like radiator, using fins and the outside cooler air to lower the temp of the pressurized air.
Without a thing called a wastegate, a turbo would just spin faster and faster until the car was overboosted. A wastegate is a valve that opens in the exhaust before the turbo to let some of the exhaust gas escape keeping the turbo from spinning too fast.
Another important part to the turbocharger system is a recycle valve. When the turbo is on full boost it is moving a lot of air. When the driver of the car gets off the gas, the throttle plate closes quickly and all that air in the intake has nowhere to go. So the other valve opens and this pressured air is rerouted back through intake system before the turbo or to the atmosphere (import cars make a duck noise when this happens).
McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Turbo Charging
Porsche released the first turbocharged production car in 1975, known as the 930. This 911 turbo used a single turbocharger without an intercooler. It was a very fast car at the time but Porsche knew they could do more. So starting in 1978 the 930 was a larger engine with a single turbo and an intercooler standard. This same single turbo configuration continued until the 993 twin turbo. With the 993 turbo Porsche figured out that two smaller turbos could provide more air into the engine AND spin up faster without much of the turbo lag. With the 996 water cooled turbo they continued with the two turbo set up and added two intercoolers. The 997 turbo came out with a new turbos that use a computer-controlled vanes inside the turbo to help the turbo have less lag and make more power on the top end.
At 3,400 rpms the engine was making over 400hp! So I had to be ready for that power burst. Turbos also make a ton of torque which really causes the back end of the car to squat. When the driver gets off the throttle quickly the back end of the car pops back up and can lose traction. The only time my 930 spun on the track was when I lifted off the throttle. Today Porsche turbos are much better and delivering the power more smoothly. Older turbo charged cars can be upgraded to more efficient turbos that greatly reduce lag and make more power. I just put a set on my 996 Turbo and was shocked at the difference they made!
Turbochargers are going to be standard on the new 911. This is mostly for fuel efficiency. The engines can be smaller in size but make more hp. I am excited about this! The turbos that Porsche uses are so good you hardly know you are driving a turbocharged car at all. If you have any questions on turbos, or have ideas for future articles, please email me at scott@mcilvainmotors.com
The newer Porsche turbos use very high efficient wheels that spin much faster than the earlier turbos. These have almost zero turbo lag and still can make huge power.
Driving a turbo Porsche (especially an older single turbo) takes some getting used to. You may have heard turbo charged Porsches referred to as “widow makers.” The main problem is how much non-liner power the engine makes. I remember on my 1979 930 that was modified, the engine made around 200 hp at 2,400rpms.
The Stuttgart Market Letter
Written by David K. Whitlock
The final month of 2024 capped off a dynamic year in the Porsche market, with December achieving a solid 70% sell-through rate, marking a slight uptick from November's 69%. A total of 462 cars crossed the auction block, generating a dollar volume of $30,340,029. While this represents a dip from the $36,536,798 seen in November, it underscores strong demand for Porsche vehicles as the year wound down. Notable highlights included a 2005 Carrera GT claiming the top sale at $1,395,000, alongside a noticeable resurgence in the 356 market, which finally saw some deals close. As we transition into 2025, these results reflect a resilient and evolving market, with specific segments showing renewed strength.
The 356 market ended the year on a high note, with a strong 75% sell-through rate and a total dollar volume of $955,000 across 12 units. Among the standout sales was a 1957 356A Coupe, restored in 2011 and finished in stunning Sahara Beige with a Burgundy interior. The restoration featured paintwork by the Paterek Brothers and included a 1,720cc replacement engine. This exceptional example achieved $136,000, surpassing the $133,000 average. Another notable result was a 1960 356B 1600S Roadster, a single-family-owned gem for 62 years. Though it failed to close in October at $126,500, it found a new home this month for $136,000. Refinished in Red with a Grey interior, this driver-quality example sold at the lower end of the market, below the $190,000 average. These results highlight the continued appeal of well-maintained and unique 356 models, with both high-end restorations and solid drivers finding eager buyers.
The 911 Carrera 3.2 market closed out the year with an impressive performance, boasting an 86% sell-through rate and generating $1,587,770 from 21 units. Among the notable results was a 1989 911 Speedster finished in Triple Black, though the interior had been changed to Black during its life. With only 8,000 miles on the odometer, questions about the mileage history didn't deter bidders, as it achieved $220,000. This result sits above the $214,000 average and lands in the middle of comparable sales for similar mileage. Another standout was a 1989 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupe, also in Triple Black, with a 5-speed manual transmission and just 27,000 miles. This pristine example commanded $138,000, significantly outperforming the twelve-month average of $80,600. Not only was it a top-five sale in the last year, but it also led comps in terms of mileage. These results underscore the strength of late-production 3.2 Carreras, particularly low-mileage examples in desirable specifications.
The 718 market showcased some divergent trends as 2024 concluded. The 718 Spyder RS saw renewed interest, with a 2024 model featuring Porsche’s Weissach Package, finished in Shark Blue with Satin Magnesium wheels and just 479 miles, achieving $225,000. This marks the highest price for the Spyder RS since the first example hit the market in July, signaling a potential upturn for this exclusive variant. In contrast, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS market faced continued softness. A 2024 model with 1,500 miles closed at $207,000, pulling the average further down from $270,000 at the beginning of the year to $209,000 this month. Selling below the current average, this result highlights the cooling demand for what was once a hotly pursued model.
Meanwhile, the GTS 4.0 Boxsters and Caymans, the only non-GT 718s equipped with a naturally aspirated engine, continued to draw steady interest around the $80,000 mark. A 2021 Cayman GTS 4.0 sold for $79,000, a 2021 Boxster GTS 4.0 fetched $80,500, while another Cayman GTS 4.0 failed to sell at $78,718. These results suggest a stable market for these enthusiast favorites, offering accessible entry points for Porsche purists.
The Stuttgart Market Letter
As the final numbers rolled in, 2024 proved to be a robust year for the Porsche market, closing with a total sellthrough rate of 68%, $493,350,995 in dollar volume, and 7,235 units sold. This marks a significant increase in units over 2023, which saw 6,707 units sold at a slightly higher 70% sell-through rate and a total dollar volume of $479,107,514. While the year started on a slower note, December’s strong sell-through rate capped it off with momentum, setting an optimistic tone for 2025. The new year kicks off with plenty of action, including Mecum’s Kissimmee sale and Arizona Car Week, which are sure to set the stage for what promises to be another exciting year in the Porsche market.

Driving Tour Review - Fountain Hills Scenic Drive
Story by Andrea Borsenik
Photos Courtesy AZPCA Members
It was a beautiful day to take the Porsches out for a spin! We began the morning at Coffee Plantation, sipping on refreshing smoothies and building excitement for the ride ahead. The group split into two, and we joined the second wave of drivers as we hit the road.
The route was incredible, particularly the two-lane stretches where we could spread out and fully admire the lineup of stunning Porsche’s cruising alongside us. This was one of my favorite drives to a Target.
There, we stretched our legs, picked up a few items (I snagged some picture frames), and took the opportunity to chat with fellow enthusiasts, including a few new faces.
Driving Tour Review - Fountain Hills Scenic Drive
Next, we headed toward Fountain Hills, taking a break along the Salt River.
Lining up the cars along the route created a breathtaking display!
We wrapped up the day at a restaurant near Fountain Park, just in time to catch the fountain in action. Over a delicious meal, we shared stories and enjoyed fantastic conversation with club members
It was a wonderful day of cars, camaraderie, and beautiful scenery!

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!
Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.
For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.
Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.
While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.
How is a typical HPDE day structured?
A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.
The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.
The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.
What do you need to bring?
Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)
We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.
Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.
There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.
Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

AZPCA HPDE and Time Trials - January 4, 2025
What a great way to start 2025 spending time at the racetrack with your Porsche and your friends!
Our first HPDE and Time Trial event of the year was held at Podium Club in Casa Grande, AZ. The club hosted about 85 cars in the HPDE, with approximately 19 of those also signing up to compete in the Time Trials portion of the event.
The weather was surprisingly mild for early January, rewarding drivers with fast lap times. When it's too cold, tires struggle to warm up enough for maximum grip but not this time. Many participants achieved personal bests, leading to plenty of big smiles.
We had a fantastic volunteer staR keeping the event running smoothly throughout the day. Typically, it takes approximately 15 volunteers to manage an HPDE and Time Trial, and for this event, a coordinated group from ASU stepped up to help specifically with flagging. They really showed their enthusiasm in their role, keeping the radio channel buzzing with reports. A huge thanks to everyone who dedicates their time to making these events happen!
Several new HPDE drivers joined us, and we hope they had a blast and will return for another round. The Podium Club track features a very long front straight RS cars and Turbos often hit 140+ mph before the braking zone, all without the stress of a speeding ticket. It’s like therapy, really… good for your soul.
We were also fortunate to have two amazing photographers capturing the action. Clay Lyons of Shop Class Agency focused on paddock photos, while Phil Veitch of Veitch Creative was out on track, shooting cars in motion. Hope you enjoy the photos, and come join us for our next therapy session at Arizona Motorsports Park on March 29! Register at www.msreg.com/03-29

The Porsche Club of America features news, videos, and information about the current market for used Porsches in the monthly Mart Fresh News email newsletter.
Mart shoppers are PCA members who know Porsches, know what they’re looking at, and are serious, ready, willing, and able buyers — not tire kickers. Because PCA members take care of their Porsches, vehicle quality in The Mart is better than other websites. And these are not anonymous buyers and sellers, they are registered PCA members.

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model
The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.
CHECK OUT THE REGISTRIES AT: www.pca.org/connect/special-interest-groups
Through the Ages now features the latest club events and programs
New for 2025, the Porsche Club of America History Book contains an overview of the club’s history, followed by individual sections covering specific detailed items. Some sections were designed for use as standalone articles for region newsletters. Individual chapters and page numbers can be “clicked on” from the contents page. Major National Awards are also included.
