PRESIDENT’S NOTE

“True happiness is… to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future.” – Seneca

There is a lot going on in our Region, even though activities have slowed this summer. Besides registering for our October Phoenix Flight 46/ Concours at The Westin Kierland Resort. Upcoming DE at INDE in Wilcox.

What is important this time of the year for our Region is this fall's election of officers. It is great to see a number of candidates step forward for the open positions: President, Vice President, and two Director at Large positions. Please read all the candidates' bios in this month's newsletter. Thanks to all those who have decided to step forward.

I am writing this letter while on the eight-day Durango-Moab tour. Another great tour organized by Rook and Debbie Younger. A spectacular tour: Rook found the best Porsche roads, and Debbie outstanding venues. Great Porsche drives with Great people and Double Rainbows.

Make it a great Month, Mark M

From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

The Summer is almost behind us as are the 100+ degree days. This means that the so8 top can come down and the AC can go off. For some of our members, such as Ali and I, we choose to drive Vintage or older model Porsches which sounds very romanFc and invigoraFng except when it ’s over a 100, then maybe not so.

The Club sFll had loads of exciFng events on throughout the summer and now that the cooler weather is on its way we can start planning more outdoor acFviFes and driving tours. We have the November ElecFons coming up, all the Bio’s are presented in this ediFon.

Rook and Debbie just had an amazing adventure by all accounts with their Durango/Moab drive, I did hear a few stories of the dreaded small-town Poe-Poe’s out patrolling the roads looking for innocent Porsche drivers minding their own business, luckily no Fckets were issued.

Peo and Silke Hansson were in Germany recently and were kind enough to share a porFon of their adventure with us, scroll down a few pages and read all about it.

August ’s club funcFons were well received with both the members meeFng at Lou MalnaF’s and the Porsches n’ Pancakes at Soul Café seeing a healthy aYendance for summerFme events.

September is shaping up nicely for our members, we have the Members MeeFng at Pinnacle Brewing, the 11th annual Anthem Porsches n’ Pancakes, The Tonto Natural Bridge drive/picnic, HPDE at INDE Motorsport Ranch and finally the CoYonwood Charity driving tour/wine tasFng, Should be an epic month full of very interesFng events, please come out and support the club.

We also have some great events that only require your aYendance like Alpio’s Cars n’ Coffee every second Saturday of the month at Alpio’s Troon locaFon, if you are so inclined you can enjoy a coffee and a donut hole and if at all possible, please support Alpio’s favorite charity, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and keep an eye out for their very own Dr. Ken Snyder who can be found at most of these events to offer up his wisdom and thanks to all that aYend.

Enjoy your September and welcome back to the incoming Snowbirds.

Look out Anthem, Here we come!!!

FOGO de CHAO – Brazilian Steak House

Your Porsche club is excited to present one of Scottsale’s most exclusive restaurants, FOGO de CHAO. The founders of Fogo de Chao grew up on a traditional Southern Brazilian farm in the Sierra Gaucha. It is here that they learned to cook in the churrasco grilling tradition that would become the backbone of their story.

Brazilian churrasco grilling is a traditional style of barbecue that is a popular method of cooking and dining, especially in churrascarias, which are Brazilian steakhouses. You won’t want to miss this one, one of the most exciting venues we have gotten for the club in three years.

Attack From Within (Sea of Red Series Book 2)

FROM THREE-TIME AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR JAMES BULTEMA –

The gripping follow-up to the best seller, Sea of Red

As the US eliminates top-tier terrorists in the heart of the Middle East, Iran plots retaliation, leveraging American Hezbollah operatives to unleash an insidious Attack from Within. Collaborating with a ruthless, narcotics-fueled Lebanese gang from Dearborn, Michigan, they brew a recipe for catastrophe.

On leave from the Navy, Sarah “Danger” Freeman and her boyfriend, Jessie Hampton, both carrier pilots, have finally decided to tie the knot until they find themselves in the middle of an international terrorist plot.

Retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant Harley Jennings, now a terrorist expert with the FBI, traded in his tank for a Ford. With his Lebanese partner, they lead the fight against those who threaten the US.

From terrorist camps in Iran to the streets of America to the halls of power in the Middle East and Washington, this suspenseful page-turner takes the fight against terrorism right to the heart of this nation. Check out the reviews…

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - President

My name is Dan Bouet, and I am respectfully submitting my candidacy for club President I currently serve as the club’s Vice President and HPDE chairperson. Since joining AZPCA in 2015, I have been actively involved in numerous club events, including membership meetings, social events, driving tours, autocross, and HPDE. I began volunteering as an HPDE instructor for track events and took on the role of event organizer and HPDE chairperson in 2019, which led to my regular involvement in Board meetings. In January 2023, I assumed the position of Vice President, where I have been responsible for managing and approving club contracts, applying for required insurance certificates, and guiding key decisions for various club events.

My goal has always been to enhance the club membership experience, and as President, I would continue to pursue that. Our club has thousands of members, each with their own ideas of what brings value to their membership. I aim to offer more of what our members are looking for, perhaps filling in gaps we may currently have while maintaining our traditional activities. My wife, Kellie, and our four-year-old daughter, Khloe, have been wonderful resources, contributing to many of the fun enhancements to the HPDE program over the years. As a family, we genuinely enjoy being involved with AZPCA and the friendships we’ve built through the club.

I am currently a small business owner, focusing on real estate property management, home services, and repairs. Having been in the industry for much of my life, I’ve handled many aspects of day-to-day management and decision-making. My business also involves training and mentoring others to excel in their roles, skills that have been fundamentally important in my ability to lead successfully at AZPCA.

Our club relies on strong leadership that can identify, encourage, and guide chairpersons, board members, and general member volunteers. I believe we have a great core team of individuals, and we can do even better by engaging more members who are willing and excited to get involved. As President, I would strive to ensure our club runs smoothly and our events are well-organized by providing the necessary support.

I have been honored to serve as your Vice President for the past two years and as HPDE chair for the past five. I am asking for your vote to further expand my efforts in enhancing the ownership experience through the various activities offered by AZPCA.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - President

Steve

– Candidate for President

I am a semi-retired Medical Physicist and have been active in the PCA for 30 years. I have been President of the Southern Arizona Region and twice President of the Arizona Region. I have been an editor of Going Places and have organized Flight twice. I have been an instructor for DE including setting up our first classroom program for DE. I have organized many tours over the years including Hot Air Tours to New Mexico and Off-Road tours. I currently own seven Porsches (but only 4 are running). I am currently on the board and believe my experience would allow me to keep AZ Region one of the best in the country.

Sapareto

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates -

My name is Mark Baker. I am running for the position of Vice-President of the AZ Region of the Porsche Club of America for 2025-2026.

I have been a Porsche enthusiast for the past 25 years starting with my first used 1990 guards red Carrera 2. I have owned 8 different Porsches including Boxsters and 911s. I currently drive a 2015 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

I have been a member of the AZ Region Porsche Club for 9 years. I have served the club in a variety of positions over the past 8 years. Many of you may already know me as I organized the club monthly meetings for 3 years (2016 – 2019). I also served the club as Vice President (2019 – 2020), and President (2021 – 2022). I am currently serving as Past President until the end of this year. I also act as an administrator on Motorsportreg (where you register for club events), and as an administrator for the club website photo repository (SmugMug).

My wife Jeanne and I particularly enjoy bringing people together for social events, driving tours, and charity events. This includes past drives to Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and Mt Lemmon, and Casino Night Charity events at Alpios at Troon. We also organized the club Holiday Party in December of 2019. We are currently organizing an upcoming Driving Tour event to Cottonwood in September, and one in April of 2025 to Tucson (Tucson Desert Museum and Old Tucson).

If elected, I hope to continue to add my energy and enthusiasm to help the club grow, prosper, and be a fun and welcoming place for all members to enjoy.

Thank you, Mark Baker

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Vice-President

Andy Cole – Candidate for AZPCA Vice President, 2024

I wish to be considered for the position of Vice President as the AZ club board transition into 2025. I have been a PCA member since 2017 with the Redwood Region PCA club in Sonoma/Marin counties in Northern California and transferred my PCA membership to AZPCA when my wife, Christine and I relocated from CA in February 2021. I held the position of news editor for almost 18 months and had just taken the role of VP Redwood Region when we left for AZ. I have been in the role of Chief Concours Judge at the club for 3 years and I believe I have much more to offer the AZPCA and would very much welcome the opportunity to serve as the club Vice President in support of the new President and the evolution of the AZPCA.

A brief history on myself - Originally from Leeds in the North of England and grew up following and still do, the Formula 1 motor racing and the Le Mans annual races. It was the Le Mans races back in the 70s and 80s that inspired me to focus on Porsches and although it has taken me many years to achieve my motoring dream, I am now fortunate to be a very happy Porsche owner for the past 7+ years. I started with a 987 Boxster and was encouraged to enter many concours events culminating in a 2nd place at the 2019 Werks Reunion in Monterey. Late in 2019 I replaced my Boxster with my lifelong dream of a 911 Carrera convertible and have spent the last 2 years making this car my own with Martini livery, Porsche Sports Exhaust, and some carbon fiber interior upgrades. As with many other PCA members, one of the biggest benefits of being involved with a club is the great like-minded people you meet and the lifelong friends that you make, it’s these relationships that assist with feedback and input on where/ what/how the club could change as we plan for the future.

I work full time for a Data Storage company, Pure Storage, head quartered in Santa Clara, CA and I continue to provide high end detailing services for family and friends at the weekend/evenings. I love new technology especially when it moves into the auto industry and I am very interested in the electric/ hybrid vehicles we see popping up from all auto manufacturers. That said, there is nothing that beats a screaming flat 6 or 8 cylinder Porsche and I believe these will be here for some time to come.

I would very much appreciate your consideration and vote for Vice President of the AZPCA.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Director at Large

Frank J Grimmelmann - Candidate for Director at Large

I seek and would appreciate your support to further contribute and provide continuity to our club by continuing to serve on the AZPCA Board of Directors as a Member at Large. As an active member of Arizona PCA since 2002, I have actively engaged in both driving and social events consistently over the years. Previously serving on the AZ PCA Board as a Director at Large currently in 2023/2024 and previously in 2012/2013, I would like to continue to support our elected officers and the club through proven experience. After completing my earlier term, I elected to step aside to provide others with the opportunity to contribute, while continuing as an active member participating in many social and driving events. Presently, I arrange the summer Porsche & Pancakes event and plan to continue to do so along with continuing to introduce special driving events. Previously, I served as the Chairman of Phoenix Flight 27 supported by a phenomenal planning team. I have been fortunate to own five Porsche’s over the years and presently own two that remain active in the Club. Also, having been in senior management positions and serving on of both non-profit and for-profit organization’s boards of directors presently and over my career for many years, I fully support and understand the significant responsibility as a Board Member. I look forward to further contributing and elevating the Porsche marque among enthusiasts. The People make the club and with your support I look forward to continuing to raise the bar and the experience that we can all enjoy together.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Director at Large

Rod Ladd – Candidate for Director at Large

I have been in property management business for close to 20 years with our families commercial properties. I have also been a long time Rotarian ,Eagle Scout and Porsche enthusiast (only own 5 , Alpio has me beat ) Being new to the club last year, upon my brother-in-law recommending us to to join, Both my wife and I agree that this is a fun group with awesome drives and are fully committed to having a good time.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Director at Large

KENNETH ALLAN MITCHELL – Candidate for Director at Large

I joined the Porsche Club of America in 1986 and was a member of the Sacramento Valley Region. In 2019, my wife, Jean, and I moved to Sun City West and are full-time residents. In early 2020, Jean and I transferred our membership of record to the Arizona Region.

We have enjoyed the many activities that this great Region hosts for their members. Also, I participate in the Autocross Events and on many occasions volunteer to help set up the events for the Autocross Chairs. I also wrote the Autocross Event newsletter articles for the Region’s Newsletter “Going Places”. Also, I volunteer to perform the Timing & Scoring, and Grid/Technical Inspection duties for the Region’s High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials events. Last year, Jean and I attended the PCA Parade Event.

Two years ago, I asked the members of this Region for their vote to support me for the 2023-2024 Director-atLarge seat on the Arizona Region Board of Directors. I would like to thank those members for supporting me. I have decided to run again for the same seat on the Board of Directors and I am asking the members of this Region for their support.

During my 2023-2024 term, Region President, Mark Manente, created a new Chair Position and appointed me as the Communications Chair, in addition to my regular Director-at-Large responsibilities. As the Communications Chair, I was responsible for ensuring that critical event and activities information is disseminated to the Region’s members and the same information is included on the Zone 8 Activities Calendar.

In my first term, I set a goal for myself to learn my new responsibilities as a Director-at-Large in order to be the best Director in order to best serve the members of this Region. If I am re-elected for a second term, I would like to set a couple of goals for the Region’s membership to have a large selection of activities to choose from to enjoy with other Region members.

A couple of activities I would like to see for our members are Car Rallying and Technical Sessions during the 2025-2026 term. I would also like to see that our members’ Juniors become Junior PCA Members and have activities to include those junior members of all ages.

Your vote for me could help make these activities possible. Please vote for me to be re-elected for the 20252026 Director-at-Large seat on the Arizona Region Board of Directors.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:

1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.

2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.

3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).

4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).

5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

SAVE THE DATE....Driving tour: Wickenburg

Driving Tour: Wickenburg – Bagdad Loop

Thursday, October 10, 2024

Let’s enjoy a driving loop through Wickenburg and Bagdad and then back to Wickenburg for lunch. This drive will be on a Thursday, helping us to avoid weekend traffic congestion and to better enjoy the views along the way. From our meeting point in North Phoenix to lunch in Wickenburg the approximate driving distance is 185 miles.

This will be a very fun drive, as the Wickenburg – Bagdad loop has three very nice roads with lots of curves. Our meeting point will be at Tramonto Marketplace near I-17 and Carefree Highway in North Phoenix From there we will travel west on AZ-74 to US-93 for our first break, just north of Wickenburg at the US-93 & Vulture Mine Rd roundabout Mobil station.

After our break is where the fun begins, as we continue our tour north on US-93 to AZ-89, which takes us on a thrilling drive along the edges of Granite Mountain Once we reach Kirkland Junction, that will bring us to Kirkland Valley Road, the second leg on the loop This will lead us westward to AZ-96 and into Bagdad at Bashas’ supermarket for our second break. After our break we will then double back on AZ-96 towards AZ-97 for the third leg of the loop.

AZ-97, dubbed by many as “Roller Coaster” for its numerous dips, inclines, and tight turns, is an 11-mile stretch of road ending at US-93 AZ-97 easily earns its nickname! Once on AZ-93 we will head back towards Wickenburg for lunch. After lunch everyone will be on their own for a leisurely drive back home.

What I did on my summer vacation

Deutsche Automuseum Schloss Langenburg e.V. (German Car Museum Castle

Langenburg)

The museum was founded by car enthusiasts Prince Kraft zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and racer/motor journalist Richard von Frankenberg in 1969. The prince decided, over a nice bottle of local wine, to turn the stables of his residence, the castle Langenburg, into a museum for exclusive German automobiles. The main concept was to create a collection of technologically significant cars and to display the history of car manufacturing to the public. Bottom line: they succeeded.

The exhibition starts with a Benz & Cie Typ 1, the world’s first automobile. Daimler-Benz recreated 20 of these for its 100-year anniversary in 1986. It’s powered by a 990ccm 1-cylinder with 0.75 HP and has a top speed of 20km/h. Side note: The story of the Typ 1 is nicely told by the Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, where another replica is displayed. Apparently, marketing wasn’t one of Mr. Benz’s strengths, so Mrs. Benz decided to set out on a 180km journey with their two sons to demonstrate the viability of their newly developed motor car, unbeknownst to Mr. Benz who was busy inventing The trip was a success and was widely reported in the papers. Orders started to trickle in and thus the immense commercial success of what is now Daimler-Benz AG was initiated.

Basically, all exhibits at the museum were either technological breakthroughs at the time and/or winners/participants in famous races. The exhibition continues with a Fiat 500 Weinsberg Roadster Topolino, built by Fiat Deutschland in 1937-39. Other notable exhibits are the Goggomobil (Hans Glas GmbH), WV Käfer, BMW Isetta, several NSUs, a Zündapp with midengine and front- and rear “gullwing” doors, Mercedes of several kinds, including SL300s, a Le Mans winning Audi R18, BMWs and of course Porsches.

Speaking of Porsches, one of the highlights is a 959 Paris-Dakar displayed nose-to-nose with the new 992 Dakar. Porsche entered three 959s in the 1986 race and took a 1-2 victory with René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne in first place with Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur claiming second. The third 959 Paris-Dakar, displayed here, was driven by 959 project manager Roland Kussmaul and Wolf-Hendrik Unger, and took sixth place. Quite some business trip. The winning car was elaborately restored by the Porsche Museum workshop and is normally on display, however not right now.

During the summer season the museum hosts Castle & Cars events, which is kind of the royal version of Cars and Coffee but with a beer garden instead of coffee. Unfortunately, we just missed the recent 50 years Porsche Turbo C&C event.

What I did on my summer vacation

The museum is located right next to the hilltop Langenburg Castle, which we also toured, approximately 100km northeast of Stuttgart in the beautiful Hohenlohe region. Since this is a PCA magazine, we won’t go into too much of the history of the zu Hohenlohe- Langenburg family, which has been residing in the castle since 1253, but those watching The Crown will appreciate the close connection with the British royal family. The co-founder of the museum, Kraft zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg, was King Charles’ cousin. His mother was Margarita von Battenberg, Princess of Greece, and the sister of Prince Phillip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, King Charles’s father.

If you are in the Stuttgart area, perhaps for a factory delivery, we highly recommend a trip to the Deutsche Automuseum in addition to the “mandatory” Porsche and Mercedes museums in Stuttgart.

What I did on my summer vacation

Meet this Month’s Featured Member - Alistair Cloke

1. When did you join PCA?

I joined PCA in 2008 when I bought my first Porsche - a Polar Silver 997.1 Carrera 4S manual

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

I currently have a 2015 Carrara White 991.1 GTS PDK Coupe.

3. Where are you from?

I’m originally from Australia. I moved to the US in 2005, based in the greater Seattle area and still have a home there. I bought a second home in the East Valley at the end of 2021 and am slowly spending more time in AZ. .

4. Family?

I’m happily single! My parents, sister and her family are all still in Australia but like to come over an visit. I also visit them 3 - 4 times a year.

5. Work background or trade?

I’ve recently retired after 39 years in the Tech sector

6. What makes your car special?

It’s the first car I’ve thought of as “forever” car. It’s 9 years old, yet still looks stunning to me. It’s also the last of the normally aspirated non-GT 911s and there is just nothing like the sound of that 3.8L engine at full song.

7. Next upgrade?

If there is an upgrade, it will be an addition rather than a replacement. I’ve always wanted a GT3 or Turbo S, both would be ideal. One for the track and one for touring.

8. Have you personalized your car?

I’ve only lightly personalized the car - tinted windows, vanity plates (AC GTS - which I get grief for from the Porsche crowd, as it’s not an Air Cooled car!). I’ve also replaced the factory PASM controller with a DSC Sport controller. Final tweaks are an integrated Escort radar detector/laser shifter, and rear camera integrated into the license plate frame.

9. Favorite memory with a car?

The standout memory for me was my first time on track at a high performance driving school (Proformance Racing School in Seattle). As soon as I got home, I immediately searched for the next PCA Drivers Ed day and signed straight up!

10. Where/Why did you buy your Porsche?

Prior to moving to the US, I always drove BMWs. Porsches in Australia are crazy expensive due to import duties and luxury car taxes. When I got to the US and saw the prices, I couldn’t resist!

11. High school nickname?

I had a pretty boring high school nickname - Clokey. I played basketball, Australian Rules football, squash, and did track, so I suspect that’s why the standard “y” added to surname was the nickname I had (along with most of my friends).

12. Top 3 cars you would own?

1. ALL Porsches of course...

2. Porsche

3. Porsche

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is well-known as a car enthusiast, just ask anyone who has watched his show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”

Jerry owns 150 cars, and 43 of them are Porsches. He transformed a 3-story former plumbing business in New York City into a garage for some of his collection. It also has 850 square feet of living space and a dedicated support team to keep the cars ready to roll.

Among his collection are some of the most famous Porsches in history. Here are five of them, and what makes them so iconic.

1949 Porsche 356/2 Gmund

This aluminum car was built by hand out of old Volkswagen parts in the old Austrian sawmill town of Gmund. Only 52 were made over two years. It was essentially ground zero for the 911, with its rearengine and rear-wheel drive.

Jerry said “I love it because, to me, it looks like a little alien flying saucer.”

1964

Porsche 911

This is the very first production 911, and Jerry owns the very first production 911, and the first one imported into the United States. Even better, it was built specifically for Ferry Porsche, the son of the founder. He asked for, (and got) a sunroof, leather seats, and metallic exterior paint.

Jerry paid $400,000 for it in 1996. He then paid $250,000 to have it restored at the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen. It is now valued at $5 million.

1955 Porsche 550 Spyder

This infamous model was the one actor James Dean was driving when he died. But it was an amazing sports car, with a 1.5 liter engine and a top speed of 140 mph. It was Porsche’s first purpose-built race car, and earned the nicknam the “giant killer” for its prowess on the race track.

Jerry owned one out of just 75 ever made. He sold it for $5.3 million in a 2016 auction.

1970 Targa Florio-winning Porsche 908/03 (chassis number 008)

Porsche designed this car specifically to compete in two World Sportscar Championship endurance races - the Targa Florio and the Nurburgring Nordschleife. This car won the Targa Florio in May 1970. It was not only lightweight, but had perfect weight distribution (45-55.)

Even though it was a true racing car, its prototype was ironically nicknamed the “VW bus.” That’s because the driver was forced to sit bolt upright and the pedals were so close to the front of the car.

Jerry said the 908 was his most treasured possession.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

1986 Porsche 959

The 959 was released in 1986 with a flat-six turbo charged engine. It was extremely light-weight, thanks to the use of aluminum. Its top speed is listed as 197 mph, although it’s actually reached 211 mph. As a result, it was the fastest street-legal car at that time.

Jerry owned one of just 357 ever made, paying $700,00 for it.

Danielle’s Column - Best of the Best

I don’t know about you, but I’m always bowled over when I come across an eclectic story in a mainstream media outlet on our favorite subject, performance cars.

Like one that appeared recently in The New York Times on, get this, the most desirable collector cars in the world. Under the headline “The Holy Grail Cars? Get Them While They Last” Rob Sass proffers the argument that, today, only the Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Jaguar XKSS and the McLaren F1 merit mention as the ultimate objects of desire for well-healed collectors. With an asterisk.

A what? Yes, since the F1 is several generations newer than the others, and was never meant for the track, although a modified version ran and won Le Mans, it’s an outlier to the other rides. Or so says the author.

The thing that gets me is, how many Times readers actually understand and appreciate just what these vehicles were in their time, or are today? And, then, is this really such a short list, the very best of the best?

Let’s take the first question first. Do non-gearheads really appreciate classic automotive excellence?

I’m thinking about a round of golf recently, where a friend and I were paired with several men who were probably in their 20s or early 30s. My golf partner is in his 40s. Among other things, he imports and sells late ‘80s/early ‘90s street versions of rally cars. Out of the blue, while waiting to tee off, the subject of cool cars came up. And one of the other players said his favorite car was the Ferrari that Magnum drove in the TV series.

So my friend asked him, which model? The 308? The 308 QV? The 328? And our playing companion looked like he just ran into a buzzsaw. He had no idea what my friend was talking about. Which ended our conversation. My friend and I headed back to our golf cart, and nodded conspiratorially. Because this other player just did not understand.

I had another incident recently, at an art show, when I struck up a conversation with an artist who was displaying a five-by-five foot scene of technicolor Adirondack chairs, resplendent on a Miami Beach beach, or so she said. I really don’t recall how we segued into cars, but we did. Turns out, she was energized about an opportunity to turn her artistic creativity to automobiles, and sell her works to collectors.

She started probing, picking my brain about auctions and events, manufacturers and models And I, of course, given an audience, started a monologue the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Monterey, the Mille Miglia Historica, Villa d’Este. This was all news to her.

We exchanged text numbers, and my new best friend has now reached out and queried me, several times since, about auction houses, the most desirable collector vehicles, where to sell her artwork. Finally, I told her to read Sports Car Market, Octane, Hemmings.

Danielle’s Column - Best of the Best

What do I make of these chance encounters? It comes down to this. It’s the gene. You either have it, or you don’t. Yes, you can appreciate the beauty, the sophistication, the mechanicals. You can even enjoy time behind the wheel. But, well, do you understand? Do you really understand? Do you feel the passion? If you don’t possess the gene, I think not.

Let’s put it this way; given unlimited funds, would you buy a Ferrari 250 GTO, if you can find one for sale? Or a Picasso? Or a Patek Philippe? Or a bottle of Mouton Rothschild? Here’s my answer; only if you’re a fanatic.

As for my fanatical fantasy list, sure, I’d love a 250 GTO. But I’d also love a Porsche 904. I’d love an original 427 Cobra. And, Mr. Sass, shouldn’t these cars also be on the list? Because they too are iconic, and they too could also be driven to the track, raced, and driven home.

Not that I would. Because I’d also have in the garage a Miura, a 275 GTB, a 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Along with a 288 GTO and a Carrera GT. By the way, remember that the last two were developed to race. Except neither race series actually came to be. So, what Ferrari and Porsche did was revamp their models for the street. The price for these vehicles today may not be in interstellar space, but they’re certainly blasting through the Ionosphere. Just like the cars the author cites in the Times article.

The bottom line? Works of art, in whatever form, are works of art. And they become that because they stand the test of time. They’re rare. They have provenance. They’re eternal. Which means, if you want to bask in your own private Holy Grail garage, or decorate your living room walls with museum-quality visual art, or partake of a particularly rare vintage, you’re going to have to pay. Dearly.

Just don’t expect your friends and family and neighbors to understand. Because, unless they too have the gene, they really don’t.

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Getting ready for the DE season

The weather is starting to turn which means its going to be the best time of year, track season! If you are new to the PCA or haven’t been paying attention the club offers a great program called High Performance Drivers Education (HPDE or DE). This program offers members and some non-members a chance to take their Porsche on track. The club rents a local track for the day or weekend and has different classes for different drivers with different abilities. If you are new to driving on the track the club provides a certified driving instructor that is with their student all day. This includes while driving on track so as a new driver you get plenty of safe instruction. The DE program is one of the best activities the club provides and will make you a better driver both on and off track.

The first event at the wonderful Inde Motorsports Ranch is coming up soon. Still time to get you and your car ready for the fun! The first and some would say the most important item to check is your tires. Are they more than 4 years old? Are they worn on the inside edge of the rear tires. Have the tires been plugged before? Are they miss matched front to rear? If any of this is an issue its better to get some new tires coming. You can check your tires for a date code, it will be a 4-digit number. The first two digits are the week, and the last two digits are the year the tire was manufactured. So, this tire would be the 51st week of 2019.

Having mismatched tires is in my opinion worse than old tires. The two different compounds are going to handle different and cause all sorts of issues. Tire pressure is very important, good place to start with pressure is what is recommend on the tire pressure sticker located in the vehicle.

If you don’t want to mess with checking your tires and over all condition the club offers pre-DE inspections. Qualified shops like Mcilvain Motors will inspect your vehicle and give you a condition report which shows you if your Porsche is ready for the track. You can see and access the inspection report below;

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Getting ready for the DE season

When I am heading to the track I like to wash and clean my car. Having a clean car makes is easier to clean after the event. Your car will get dirty on track so having some painters tape installed on the front bumper and high wear spots will add some protection.

One of the most important things you can do as a new or even seasoned driver is get your mind right. You the driver will have the biggest impact on the performance good or bad. Going over the basics of track driving will really help and keep you from picking up bad habits. A few favorite books I recommend to all of my students is “Porsche high-performance driving handbook” and “Speed secrets”. Both are great at explaining the basics and how to get faster safely. Also, a good trick when new to driving on track or driving a new track is to watch some in car videos at that track. Just getting some simple land marks will really help learn a new track. Having an open and excited head space on the day of the track event will make the day even more fun.

Don’t forget to drink plenty water and have a great time at an upcoming AZ PCA DE event!

Who is Scott McIlvain

The current Mcilvain Motors was founded by Scott Mcilvain, great grandson of E.H “Mac” Mcilvain. Scott was hooked on the family business and performance cars at a very early age. He left Prescott and attended Arizona State University where he earned a degree in business. It was while Scott was an account manager at a top 25 marketing agency that he fell in love with his first PORSCHE, a 1979 930. Fast forward to today and Scott now runs Mcilvain Motors, located in Tempe, Arizona and one of the leading independent and affordable late model PORSCHE service specialists.

Stuttgart Market Letter

Good Morning! Summer is officially over for me because as soon as I hit send, I’ll be getting the kiddos ready for their first day of school. In the automotive retail world, that first day of school usually means things pick back up, and based on the weekend’s sell-through rate, it looks like things are picking up in the auction market as well. We’ll see if it continues.

shedding approximately 176 lbs through lightweight components like aluminum doors and a manual fabric roof and increasing the horsepower of the 3.4-liter flat six over the standard Boxster S to 320, the Boxster Spyder provided enhanced performance and unfiltered driving pleasure. This 2011 Boxster Spyder is finished in Platinum Silver Metallic over a Carrera Red leather interior with Black Alcantara seat inserts and shows 8,000 miles on the odometer. The exterior presents in very good condition with even paint meter readings all around as does the interior, top, and storage components. Add to that a stack of service records, and you have a very nice example of a first-generation Spyder.

Our Spotlight car sold back in May 2021 at a final bid of $71,500, which was the peak of Spyder pricing over the past five years. Since then, the seller has added just 1,000 miles to the odometer in what has been a pretty much flat market. It sold this time around at a final bid of $65,000. And even though that is a good chunk of change lower than the previous sale, it’s still the highest price paid for a Spyder over the last twelve months. A solid result that might look like a good buy in a few years as long as the new owner keeps the miles low. But with such a fun car to drive, that might prove difficult.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model

The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.
