PRESIDENT’S NOTE
"Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd." Voltaire
As I mentioned last month our webmasters, Mike Ferring and Gregg Bookspan were planning a website "refresh." The website was under construction for a few days. I opened the site after receiving Gregg's email, "What a facelift." It is clean, crisp, bright." I must admit I had to adjust to how to access some information. The board approved the "refresh", Gregg's description or "facelift" my word. Please direct your comments to: webmaster@az,pca.org
Our next monthly member meeting will be on August 7th at Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria and Porsche & Pancakes on August 17th at the Soul Cafe. Go out and check the club calendar for more upcoming events.
Volunteers required! Activities and events are always being planned. The club's new Social Chair, Deb Rettew is in the midst of planning for our Major Fall event; Phoenix Flight/Concours 46. As I mentioned last month, this year's event will be held at Westin Kierland Marriott in Scottsdale. Send an email to: socialchair@az.pca.org
Everyone receives the "PCA Panorama" magazine each month. I know the first thing I look at is "From the Regions" to see what Larry Grimes is going to include from our region. Thank you, Larry
Thanks to VP Dan Bouet for recruiting both Deb Rettew, Social Chair and Travis Sutton, the club's new Equipment Chair. Travis is taking over from David Fisher, who has been the club' equipment chair for as long as I can remember.
It is election season! Your club wants you. Mark Baker, and Larry Grimes are the election committee. We currently have two Director at Large positions open for a two-year term. Also, the President and Vice President positions are open for two-year terms. We will need all candidate bios and pictures for the September Going Places issue.
If you are interested in participating in helping the club grow. Contact Mark Baker at: pastpresident@az.pca.org or Larry Grimes at: lgrimes689@gmail.com
Imagine our delight when on our resent trip to Germany we had the good fortune to stumble upon an “Oldtimers” car show in the historic town of Boppard.
What made the show so impressive is that you had automobiles from the start of the 1900’s straight through to a somewhat modern 1992 Porsche 964 and everything in-between.
The cars were all proudly displayed in the Historic Boppard Marktplatz which dates back to the 17th century, it made for a truly epic backdrop.
The interesting thing about wandering around a village over 5,500 miles from home is that you still see American muscle cars intermingled with German, British, Italian and other lesserknown brands but they all have the exact same thing in common, a passion for cars.
If you ever find yourself in Europe you will no doubt, find a small village with many great attractions, amazing restaurants, quaint pubs and a car show in the middle of the town square. Embrace life and live it to its fullest and always look for a new adventure.
Wenn man glücklich ist, soll man nicht noch glücklicher sein wollen. "If you are happy, you shouldn't wish to be even happier."
It's actually a quotation by German writer Theodor Fontane (1819-1898).

FOGO de CHAO – Brazilian Steak House
Your Porsche club is excited to present one of Scottsale’s most exclusive restaurants, FOGO de CHAO. It is here that they learned to cook in the churrasco grilling tradition that would become the backbone of their story.
Brazilian churrasco grilling is a traditional style of barbecue that is a popular method of cooking and dining, especially in churrascarias, which are Brazilian steakhouses. You won’t want to miss this one, one of the most exciting venues we have gotten for the club in three years.

Review - Ken Steele Alpine Tour XXIV Adventure
Story by Mark Manente
If you are wondering why I am writing this article for Going Places, it is because I forgot to ask for a volunteer at the drivers’ meeting. I was in a rush to get on the road as I didn't know how much time we could spend in road construction on US 60 East of Superior. Good news! It turned out there was no road construction going on.
We left east Mesa on time with only 16 cars because of a few last-minute cancellations and Sven and Misha Antemann had originally planned to meet the group in Globe but he had a flat near Tucson on a brand-new tire. They did catch up with us at the Lodge. This was not a good omen for the weekend!
After a stop at McDonalds in Globe, the group headed up US 60 through the Salt River Canyon to AZ 73 through Whitewater to AZ 260 for lunch at the Lion's Den in Pinetop. After lunch everyone topped off their gas tank and headed east on AZ 260 then south on AZ 273 to Big Lake.
The twisties from Big Lake to US 191 were terrific. Unfortunately, Jim and Carole Bultema had a flat tire on a fairly new Pilot Sport 4s tire. Something put a gash in the sidewall and he had to limp back to our lodging destination, the newly named, Long Shadow Lodge formerly Tal Wi Wi. Jim had the same issue last year on the last stretch of 191 from Hannagan Meadow. This year we were fortunate to have two 996 Boxster’s with jacks. Eric Beer took over to remove Jim's tire and they commandeered Dan Bouet's Cayenne so Jim could drive to Show Low Discount Tire for a mismatched snow tire. At least this year Jim didn't have to be towed back to the Valley!
Saturday morning after the safety briefing meeting, the group left the Lodge to US 180 towards the New Mexico border. What a great road, unfortunately only a few civilian cars pulled over for our group. We stopped at Leopold Vista for a picnic lunch and photo op.
After lunch the fun began, as we headed east on AZ 78. Another great road, long straights, and plenty of S curves. The group of 8 Porsche's gassed up in Morenci and headed to the Morenci Mine overlook. From there we headed north on US 191 (formerly RT 666) to our stop at Hannagan Meadow Lodge. While stopped, Mike Ferring’s tire sensor warned of a low front tire. Milt Feltch. had a pump and the Lodge’s mechanic added more air. Three cars waited for Mike to follow the group north to Alpine. We didn't get very far as we were 16 miles from our destination when the tire went flat.
Myself, Milt, and Sven stopped to access the damage. After some discussion we came up with a plan and called Eric back at the Lodge. The Plan; take Jim’s snow tire off and bring it down and put it on Mike's car. This time we enlisted Dan to drive the tire south on 191. Unfortunately, they came with a spare tire from a 996. The lug nut pattern matched but the tire was hitting the brake calipers. Back they went. The six of us standing on the road until a thunder storm drove us into our cars. Back to the drawing board.
Dan and Eric went back to take off Jim's snow tire off and bring it down. The tire was fitted and Mike made it back to the Lodge. Mike and Maryellen waited for a tow truck to take his Boxster to Show Low Discount Tire. They wouldn't have a tire for the car for a few days.
Photos by Mike Ferring
Review - Ken Steele Alpine Tour XXIV Adventure
Mike and Maryellen stayed at the Lodge and hitched a ride back to the Valley as passengers in two 911s that had solo drivers.
We learned two things! On tours out in the wilds we need at least two jacks in the group, a tire puncture kit(s) and a pump. Although, a tire puncture kit would not have helped as both tires had a gash in the sidewall. Oh and at least one SUV in the group. Thank you, Dan!
Saturday night, most of the group drove to Springerville for dinner at The Gateway for BBQ. Everyone left early Sunday morning for the Valley.
Great weekend on great roads, with fabulous Porsche people. Oh, if you see Rook Y. and you are going on the Durango, CO tour ask him to bring his guitar.
If you haven’t attended at least one Alpine Tour you should.
Hope to see you next year.

Review - Schmooze Cafe - Porsches n’ Pancakes
Story by Frank Grimmelmann
Photos by Marie Grimmelmann
W
hile I wouldn’t generally consider this a blessing for a Porsche and Pancakes event in the ‘SECRET
GARDEN’ setting at Schmooze in Olde Towne Scottsdale, we were undoubtedly Blessed by an overcast morning that was relatively mild given the temperatures. Once again, we enjoyed a stellar event hosted by Schmooze’s owner himself, Tony Hamati. Chef Tony is the owner of Schmooze in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. He was the former owner/operator of such Valley staples as Bravo! Bistro, Bravo! Pizzeria, and Naya Mediterranean Cuisine. Additionally, Tony has consulted for numerous restaurants in the Valley to help keep Phoenix a top culinary destination. It pays to get to know people, proven again in exploring Tony’s origins with culinary successes. After studying food, beverage, and hotel management at the Culinary School of Jordan (a major US Ally), he continued his education at the Culinary of the Sorbonne, Paris. He began his career in 1980 as sous-chef for King Hussein at the Royal Palace of Jordan. He prepared many styles of cuisine for state dinners, where guests included dignitaries and leaders from around the world. In 1985, he moved to the United States and became an American citizen. He was the banquet chef at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in the mid to late '80s, then moved temporarily to Hawaii to open the Westin Maui Resort. Tony then served as General Manager of Tomaso's restaurant, opening Tomaso's concepts in Del Coronado and Phoenix, Arizona. In 1996 he opened Bravo! Bistro and has been a chef-owner since that time. His belief is that fresh, slow food prepared properly appeals to people who know and enjoy quality cuisine. Tony not only served an exceptional and plentiful feast for those in attendance, but notwithstanding the inflation witnessed in the last year, held the price for the AZPCA at the same level he has for the last 3 years that we’ve made Schmooze an Annual Breakfast Event. Tony, thanks for another great event at Schmooze and your personal attention to the detail this year!
That said, the true measure of success is watching everyone enjoy the event and most importantly the interaction with other members. By this measure alone, the event exceeded all expectations. With 55 participants and 39 cars in attendance, this alone suggests the popularity of this venue particularly with the high temperatures forecast. However, to me the success was to finally have to extricate the last ones lingering over rich conversation and exceptional coffee sometime after 11AM. Noted among these were our own GP Editors Gregg and Ali Bull, Dieter & Susan Guenter and Jan Nyquist (who was ‘bacheloring it” with Monyette away at a business conference).
Review - Schmooze Cafe - Porsches n’ Pancakes
Of course, their departure from Schmooze didn’t seem free up any parking spaces in front of the restaurant very quickly, since they were seen ogling a new Macan later into the morning! It seemed fitting that Jan would be among the last to leave since he was the last to register, remember Jan in the future register early and register often it’s the American way! Of course, he had a good reason for leaving late since he had an extended conversation welcoming a new member who had never attended an AZPCA event previously, so let’s all extend a warm welcome to Douglas Kingston welcoming him to our fellowship Turns out Jan is a great ambassador that we can all learn a lot from, hat’s off to you Jan, keep up the good work!
Remember, IT’S ABOUT THE PEOPLE, NOT JUST THE CARS (but they sure help a lot).
We look forward to seeing everyone at our remaining summer events, Soul Café in North Scottsdale in August, or Anthem Country Club’s Ironwood Clubhouse in September, with registration already closed for the Black Mountain Coffee Shop in Carefree with 63 attending arriving in 37 vehicles! Join us for the journey, we welcome your arrival!
IMPORTANT AZPCA Information
AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event Cancellation Policy
Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.
Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:
Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”
Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.
IMPORTANT AZPCA Information
Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:

Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.
2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.

Meet this Month’s Featured Member - Bill Thomas
1. When did you join PCA?
I bought my first Porsche just back in December ’23, so joining PCA-AZ was part of the grand plan. My wife Robin said “Bill. Go get a hobby”, I think she meant something like learn how to play chess, she definitely didn’t mean go buy a convertible sports car that’s 25 years old.
2. What Porsche(s) do you have?
I have a Vintage 1999 911 (996) Cabriolet, it’s silver with a black rag top
3. Where are you from?
That’s a loaded question, my family moved around a lot growing up, but let’s go with Denver metro area for 40 years until 12 years ago when we moved here.
4. Family?
Yes, three of us plus one. My wife Robin of almost 38 years. We went to Columbine HS together, not sweethearts – met in college on a blind date at a bar. Our dog Izzy Bo because we’re avid Wolverine fans, every dog we’ve had has the middle name “Bo”, and my Mom lives down here now, about 3 miles from us. She wants my car because she misses her Honda Del Sol.
5. Work background or trade?
Entrepreneurial Technology Fanboy – I own an Amazon Web Services reseller business where we build applications using the AWS technology for other businesses. My mom still thinks I work at one of the warehouses and deliver for Amazon Fresh, not that this wouldn’t be a bad gig – gmo free, antibiotic free beer delivery guy….
6. What makes your car special?
That Scott and Christina at McIlvain Motors don’t charge me the usual “if you tell me how to do my job” hourly rate, we’re special - they only charge me the “if you worked on it first” rate.
7. Next upgrade?
I just added a Kenwood audio system and replaced the OEM am/fm radio, I now get more than one station.
8. Have you personalized your car?
No, we’re still at the stage of stabilization – new suspension, fix the blinkers, complete tune-up, replace the ACE Hardware hose clamps. Racing stripes will come later…
9. Favorite memory with a car?
Well, can’t talk about that, but I did have a 1969 Karman Ghia convertible that I loved as a kid (17-19) growing up in Colorado – that thing paid for my whole freshman year of college when I sold it.
10. Where/Why did you buy your Porsche?
Its about the people, not the car – right? Seriously though, to meet people, have some fun going on tours and well, trying it out on the track even though Scott has warned me to take it easy.
11. High school nickname?
My dad always called me Hoss after the Cartwright brother on Bonanza. I couple of hockey buddies thought that was fun, OMG – couldn’t wait for that to pass by.
12. Top 3 cars you would own?
1. a 1948 Type 356, after all who wouldn’t, right?
2. a 917 like was used in the movie LeMans
3. 2024 911 in Carmine Red, and classic Cognac

Five Most Expensive Porsches Ever Sold
BY Kimberly Amadeo, Arizona Region
There are many fascinating stories about the history of each one of these expensive Porsches. In fact, an entire article could be written about each one! (Let me know if that’s something you would like.)
This history, combined with the car’s previous owners, races, and performance, attract buyers who are willing to pay what it takes to own these iconic vehicles. Here are the top five most expensive Porsches ever sold.
1970 Porsche 917K: $14,080,000
The Porsche 917 model accounts for two of the five most-expensive Porsches ever sold. The K stands for Kurzheck, or short tail, which allows for better stability at high speeds. It had a 5.0-liter flat-12 engine that produced 620 hp, allowing it to hit 62 mph in 2.7 seconds. It had great stability, even at 200 mph, thanks to its lightweight 93-pound chassis, vertical fins, and upswept tail.
Chassis 917-024 sold for $14.08 million at Pebble Beach Auctions in 2017. It was the first 917 to be driven in a race, the 1,000 KM of Spa in 1969. Famous racing driver Jo Siffert bought the car, and leased it to Steve McQueens’ production company for the 1971 film Le Mans, where it battled Ferrari 512s. After Sifferts’ death, it was sold to Pierrre Prier, who stored it until 2001. The subsequent Swiss owner restored it well enough to fetch that historic price.
1982 Porsche 956C: $10,120,000
Porsche only made 10 editions of the 1982 956 C. The car had a 2.65-liter turbocharged flat-six engine with 620 hp. Its top speed was 217 mph.
Chassis 956-003 fetched $10,120,000 at a Pebble Beach Auction in 2015. It finished the 12.93mile Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 11.13 seconds. The record stood for 35 years, and was only beaten by the Porsche 919 Evo. It won the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans, and also won at Spa, Fuji, Kyalami, and Brands Hatch.
1956 Porsche 550 RS Spyder: $6,230,000
The 550 RS Spyder was Porsche’s first model built specifically for racing. It was made of aluminum and steel and was so low to the ground you only had to step over the door to get in. Despite a 1.5-liter engine, it achieved 137 mph and went 0-62 mph in 10 seconds - impressive for the 1950’s.
Chassis 550-0900 sold for $6.23 million at the Goodwood Revival in 2016. It was sold in original condition. The new owner, CBS president Willett Brown, only used it for road driving. He sold it to Porsche dealer Vasek Polak, who sold it to California repair shop owner Fred Sebald, who kept in in storage for decades.
1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar: $5,945,000
When released, the Paris-Dakar was the fastest street-legal production vehicle. Its maximum speed was 197 mph. It was also the first all-wheel drive sports car.
Chassis 959-020015 was one of just seven prototypes. It sold at an RM Sotheby’s auction for $5.945 million in 2018. It was driven by Dominique Lemoyne and Rene Metge in the 1985 Paris-Dakar. It was one of two 959s that weren’t retained by Porsche, making it one of the rarest vehicles in the world.
Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies
1972 Porsche 917/10: $5,830,000
The 1972 Porsche 917/10 had a 5.4-liter, twin-turbo, flat-12 engine. This power allowed it to achieve 0-100 in 2.9 seconds, similar to modern F1 race cars. It won five of nine races in the 1972 Can-Am season, granting Porsche its first Can-Am title.
Chassis 917/10-003 was the car run by Penske Motorsport, and driven by both Mark Donohue and George Fullmer. It sold for $5.83 million at the Monterey Classic in 1972.

STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
They really are two of the best days of the year, at least for me. The annual Rocky Mountain Driving Experience, organized by the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press association. The manufacturers bring their chosen few to a jumping off spot, outside Denver, and we scribes flog them in the mountains for two days.
Hey, you want to play? You got to write something on a regular basis that revolves around, and maybe even rates, the wares provided by our generous suppliers. It’s a fun way to make a living. Although I’m not sure how many in our group actually live off their wordsmithing these days Myself included. But it’s still fun.
Each year, I’m always curious about what vehicles will show up. And, no surprise, the trend in recent years has been increasingly in two overlapping directions, EVs and SUVs, giving birth to E-SUVs.
Take manual-gearbox vehicles. Last year, there were two, an Acura Integra Type S and a Toyota CR Corolla. This year there was one, a Mazda Miata RF (the folding hardtop version) with newthis-year updates.
Other enthusiast cars? Well, we had the Nissan Z Nismo. And, uh, well … once again Porsche did not show. Nor did BMW or Audi, although they both have in the past. Mercedes did bring a vehicle, the E-Series electric SUV. Last year it was the S-Series electric SUV.
I promised myself I wouldn’t get upset over the lack of vehicles to get your blood flowing. It’s an inexorable process….
But I was able to bond, once again, with a cadre of automotive nut cases, knowledgeable, opinionated, erudite road warriors. In this crowd, I’m normal, just another inveterate gear-head. What a pleasure.
I made it a point to spend copious amounts of time behind the wheel of what I actually had an interest in. Like the Miata.
I tooled the Miata, top down, naturally, from Fairplay over Hoosier Pass to Breckenridge and down to Dillon for the evening. Snick snick, heal and toe. If only it had room for a passenger and my dog. And my golf clubs. And another 100 hp.
This was the fourth or fifth Miata that I’ve driven, and it still delivered smiles per mile. From me. But I also expected, or at least hoped, for some recognition as I tooled my way through Breck.
Alas, it was not to be. Perhaps because I was following a leviathan of a silver earth crusher, a Tesla Cyber Truck, which was running with our party for the day. The scene; waving, thumbs up, thumbs down, nobody in shrugging neutral. The thing is such an anomaly, I half expected to witness a recreation of the parade sequence in Animal House where, in this case, the Tesla goes into attack mode, the retractable tonneau retracts to spit out … who knows what, a howitzer?
The long-rumored Tesla sports car?
Danielle’s Column - Rollin’, Rollin’, Rollin’
I did sit in it. And almost had a chance to drive it. The owner said that, once behind the wheel, it drives like … a truck. A powerful truck. It even has a drift mode. All righty, then.
The Nismo. I took it over Kenosha Pass (yes, timing is everything.) And, quite frankly, it was delightful. Especially in Sport +.
Now, I’ve driven a number of vehicles with Econ, Normal, Sport and Sport + . Invariably, like the 991 Porsche Carrera PDK I drove a few years ago, it’s great for canyon-carving. But it becomes gross overkill when the twisties untwist themselves. Not the Nismo. It shifts up, awaiting a touch of gas, or a paddle flip, to get right back into the power band. Nice.
And then there was this year’s cuddly-wuddly, a Ferrari-red Fiat 500-e. Yes, it’s back. Reborn, with electro-torque galore. I had my doubts. A few years ago, I wrung out a 500 Abarth in the mountains, and was complimented for keeping up with, my memory fails me, a Mustang GT and something else. What they didn’t know is that the body lean in the corners was terrifying. Plus, the manual only had five gears. And the seat adjustment was on the right side. It took me half the run, just to find it. Why? I have no idea.
But this thing actually was fun. With much less lean. A runabout that could run around an eMini or any other electric econobox.
Oops, I’m almost out of room. Here’s the best of the rest. I did try some EVs and some SUVs and some E-SUVs. I’ll cut to the chase. The Genesis GV-70 beat the Merc for pleasure-boat cruising.
And that’s about it, folks. Fun where you can find it. I passed, so to speak, on the off-road excursion, the morning of the second day. My friends did too. Another cup of coffee sounded better than a climb over logs and boulders at 5 mph. Call me crazy, until next year.

TechTime with Scott M - Driver’s Education Tech Tips
Your First Driver’s Education
by scott mcilvain photos by christina mcilvain
Every week or so I am asked a question by a customer or a friend, “Why would you drive a DE?” Typically this turns into a long conversation that outlines the benefits of a well-organized driver’s education.
As we know, Porsche cars are direct descendents of racecars. Even the latest Porsche GT3 RSR uses an engine that is based on the original flat six design. Whether you have a 356 or the newest Boxster, you can learn a lot about your car and yourself by participating in a PCA DE.
Driving on a local racetrack with the PCA will let you explore your Porsche at your own speed. Driver education is not racing. It is not timed and everyone drives at a speed they are comfortable with. You will not be alone while you are on the track. The PCA supplies highly qualified and experienced instructors to help from the moment you put on your helmet to the last cool down lap of the day.
In addition to having a ton of fun, your first DE will help you become a better driver on the street. You will get to know the basic limits of your Porsche and I will bet you will be very surprised with what a
street Porsche can do. The biggest skill that translates to driving on the street is “looking down the road,” which means you are not as concentrated on the 15 feet in front of your bumper but looking way ahead to spot potential trouble. I have had many past DE students tell me that they use this skill every time they drive a car.
Participating in your first DE can be intimidating. Here are some helpful hints to get you ready for your first DE. The most important first step is to have a Porsche car that is mechanically sound. You don’t want to be worrying about whether
your car is going to make it through the first lap on the track. Any Porsche shop that advertises with the PCA will be more than happy to complete a Driver’s Education Tech Form (http://az.pca.org/ application/themes/azpca/pdf/AZPCA_DE_TechForm.pdf), which will cover the basic mechanical systems of your Porsche. The great thing about this service is that it is free.
Once you have your Porsche up to snuff, the next thing is getting yourself prepared for the event. I like to get to the track early. This alleviates any pressure that comes with arriving late. Once you arrive at the track you will want to check in, register, and then go through a quick check of your car. Then you will go to a drivers meeting where you will be paired up with a PCA instructor. After the meeting, you will go though an awesome classroom session where you will learn the basics of driving on the track.
Then the fun really begins! You and your PCA instructor will get in line, “grid up” and enter the track, and complete your first session. Depending on the event, you will have up to 6 sessions on the track with each session helping you learn more and more about how to drive your Porsche.
TechTime with Scott M - Driver’s Education
Here are some tips for the first-time driver:
Read a good book on the basics of driving. A good place to start is “Speed Secrets 1,” by Ross Bentley, and “Porsche High-Performance Driving Handbook,” authored by Vic Elford
Watch a track video that was filmed at your specific track. This will be a big help to learn the track.
Make sure to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen if needed.
Go at your own pace and don’t drive in the rear view mirror if someone is behind you.
Pay attention to your tires and tire pressure. Your tire pressures will go up as the day goes on.
And, most importantly, have FUN!!!!
The current Mcilvain Motors was founded by Scott Mcilvain, great grandson of E.H “Mac” Mcilvain. Scott was hooked on the family business and performance cars at a very early age. He later left Prescott and attended Arizona State University where he earned a degree in business. It was while Scott was an account manager at a top 25 marketing agency that he fell in love with his first PORSCHE, a 1979 930. This 930 led Scott to a major career change with PORSCHE. As one of twelve students accepted to the prestigious PORSCHE PTAP program after two years of general automotive study, Scott went on to complete six months of the most intensive and detailed PORSCHE hands-on training available in the U.S. After graduating with top of the class honors, Scott returned back to the Phoenix Arizona where he worked at a well-known PORSCHE independent repair facility. Scott then took a great opportunity at one of the best PORSCHE custom-build racecar and service centers in the world. Here, Scott was the head late model technician, sales manager and head driving instructor. Deciding that Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and the other valley cities needed an affordable late model PORSCHE service center, Scott opened Mcilvain Motors
Stuttgart Market Letter
Written by David K. Whitlock
June’s Porsche market looked to strengthen as we head into the summer auction season and it brought our highest sell-through rate thus far this year with 72% of the 590 Porsches on offer selling. And unlike last month, where the top of the market failed to produce results, all three million-dollar cars sold thanks to RM Sotheby’s Dare to Dream collection running at no reserve.
Taking home top honors last month was the 3,500km (~2k miles) 2015 918 Spyder offered in the Dare to Dream collection. This Canadian-market example was finished in Liquid Metal Silver over an Onyx Black leather interior and featured a host of options, and although it was not equipped with the Weissach Package, the extended carbon fiber rear diffuser from the package was fitted to the vehicle using correct factory parts. It sold at a final bid of $1,700,000 which was on par with comps without-Weissach.
Other notable sales from the collection included an 11,600km (~7k miles) 2004 Carrera GT that brought a winning bid of $1,175,000 and a 1987 959 Komfort that hammered at $1,525,000. The 959 was the buy of the sale to me as it was on the lower end of comps yet had been cosmetically restored and upgraded by Canepa to “Phase II” specifications at a cost of $285,000.
While the 959 represented one of the best buys of the month, the 1965 356 Cabriolet Emory Special was probably my favorite car to cross the online auction block. This recently completed build was finished in a stunning Tropical Green Metallic paint over a Vine Green leather interior and featured a lowered removable hardtop, increased windshield rake, deleted bumpers, rolled rocker panels, and a louvered decklid. Out back, the Rothsport-built 2.6-liter flat-four was good for 260 horsepower, which is a ton for a little 356. It sold at a final bid of $755,000, which was on par with a few Emory Specials as of late.
Speaking of 356s, the 20 cars on offer had a strong showing with a sell-through rate of 75% and a dollar volume of just over $4m. Aside from the Emory Special, we had a number of other heavy-hitters sell with a 1959 356A Carrera 1600 GS GT bringing $575,000, a 1957 356A 1600 Speedster hammering at $450,000, a 1960 356B Coupe Emory Outlaw at $385,000, and a 1958 356A 1600S Speedster selling for $380,000 to round out the top five 356 sales of June.
On the newer side of the market, 992 GT3s appear to have had a rebirth as a number of Touring models found their way above the $300,000 mark while winged cars continued to hold steady. 992 GT3 RS vehicles continued to be bid at just over $400k with two out of three examples selling and 992 Dakar remained steady with both units on offer selling around $350,000.
Other notable cars to cross the block last month included a 1981 924 Carrera GT that failed to sell at a final bid of $81,500, a modified 1993 911 RS America that hammered at $155,000 along with another RSA at $181,500, and a 1995 911 Carrera RS at $370,000. Overall, a very good month for Porsches at auction.
Stuttgart Market Letter
We’ll see what July has to offer as we build up to the big month that is always August. We’ll have two sales from Mecum next month along with all of our regular online sales so let’s hope that the trend continues after the sluggish start to the year. Until next month.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!
Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.
For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.
Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.
While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.
How is a typical HPDE day structured?
A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.
The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.
The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.
What do you need to bring?
Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)
We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.
Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.
There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.
Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

Sign up for PCA’s free monthly e-newsletter, Mart Fresh News!
The Porsche Club of America features news, videos, and information about the current market for used Porsches in the monthly Mart Fresh News email newsletter.
Mart shoppers are PCA members who know Porsches, know what they’re looking at, and are serious, ready, willing, and able buyers — not tire kickers. Because PCA members take care of their Porsches, vehicle quality in The Mart is better than other websites. And these are not anonymous buyers and sellers, they are registered PCA members.
The Mart is one of the most visited parts of PCA.org, recording over 650,000 page views per month.
Mart Fresh News also highlights a variety of Porsche listings from PCA’s Mart Classifieds. When you find a vehicle in The Mart, you can be assured that it’s been cared for by a registered PCA member — not some anonymous seller.
In addition to your online Mart ad, you get a summary version of your ad in Porsche Panorama.
It’s a free benefit of membership — there is no charge to place an ad in The Mart!

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model
The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.
