2024/2025 CALENDAR OF EVENTS

PRESIDENT’S NOTE

“Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” Omar Khayyam

VOTE-VOTE-VOTE: No not that election. Time to vote for key Board of Director positions for the next 2 years. AZPCA has over 2500 members and less than 100 submit ballots for board elections. Actually, that is not surprising since at most club events less than 100 members attend. Voting doesn't take much effort. Election starts October 1st through October 31st. The “Election Runner’ app will send all active AZPCA members an email on October 1st From: noreply@electionrunner.com and subject: “Your Invitation to Vote in the Election: 2025 AZPCA Board of Directors Ballot”. Please review all the candidates Bio's in Going Places. Vote for President, Vice President and two Director at Large positions.

At the annual Holiday Party on December 14th, at Las Sendas Golf Club, we announce the results. We hope to exceed last year's attendance numbers. The Board of Directors vote every year to significantly subsidize a significant amount of the cost per member. This year we are highlighting our Region's 65th Anniversary.

Also, at the Holiday Party we announce the annual award recipients. Every member can submit a candidate for our annual Aman-Steele Award for “Enthusiast of the Year”. You will find the description of the award in our Going Places newsletter.

Temps are lower so sign up for club events because there are plenty to pick from.

Make it a Great Month! Mark M

From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

September was, by all accounts, one of the hottest months on record, at least it felt like that to us driving around in our Cabriolet….with the top down.

We started off the month with an amazing Members Meeting at Pinnacle Brewing, Bob, Mary, Wyatt, Christiane, Brenda, Carole and Jim, please take a bow for orchestrating and carrying out an amazing evening.

Not to be outdone Frank and Maria hosted the 11 th Annual Anthem AZPCA Porsche n’ Pancake breakfast extravaganza, I think this year’s event was considered one of the best our members have attended, WOW!!!

Frank was kind enough to provide us with a little overview of the event and thanks to Richard Bernal for providing us all with those excellent photos.

Rook and Debbie came back from their Moab/Durango adventure unscathed and for the most part with all members intact.

A big thanks to one of our members, Tricia Feltch, for providing us with a great article to publish in this month’s Newsletter, scroll down to read the articles and look at the wonderful photos.

Rook and Debbie also found time to host a lovely drive to Tonto Natural Bridge and encouraged everyone to bring a nice picnic to enjoy the epic surroundings.

Dan, Kellie, Travis and the rest of the HPDE gang hosted a Track Weekend at INDE and judging by the numbers alone it seemed to be a very well attended event, congrats.

As of writing this editorial we are getting our beloved Beetle all ready for the Old Town Cottonwood Tour and Wine Tasting Weekend, this is a fun filled drive and the wine tasting is a bonus once the cars are all safely parked.

Stay Safe… Keep Cool… And enjoy all the pleasures that Arizona has to offer.

Cheers, Gregg & Ali

FOGO de CHAO – Brazilian Steak House

Your Porsche club is excited to present one of Scottsale’s most exclusive restaurants, FOGO de CHAO. The founders of Fogo de Chao grew up on a traditional Southern Brazilian farm in the Sierra Gaucha. It is here that they learned to cook in the churrasco grilling tradition that would become the backbone of their story.

Brazilian churrasco grilling is a traditional style of barbecue that is a popular method of cooking and dining, especially in churrascarias, which are Brazilian steakhouses. You won’t want to miss this one, one of the most exciting venues we have gotten for the club in three years.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - President

My name is Dan Bouet, and I am respectfully submitting my candidacy for club President I currently serve as the club’s Vice President and HPDE chairperson. Since joining AZPCA in 2015, I have been actively involved in numerous club events, including membership meetings, social events, driving tours, autocross, and HPDE. I began volunteering as an HPDE instructor for track events and took on the role of event organizer and HPDE chairperson in 2019, which led to my regular involvement in Board meetings. In January 2023, I assumed the position of Vice President, where I have been responsible for managing and approving club contracts, applying for required insurance certificates, and guiding key decisions for various club events.

My goal has always been to enhance the club membership experience, and as President, I would continue to pursue that. Our club has thousands of members, each with their own ideas of what brings value to their membership. I aim to offer more of what our members are looking for, perhaps filling in gaps we may currently have while maintaining our traditional activities. My wife, Kellie, and our four-year-old daughter, Khloe, have been wonderful resources, contributing to many of the fun enhancements to the HPDE program over the years. As a family, we genuinely enjoy being involved with AZPCA and the friendships we’ve built through the club.

I am currently a small business owner, focusing on real estate property management, home services, and repairs. Having been in the industry for much of my life, I’ve handled many aspects of day-to-day management and decision-making. My business also involves training and mentoring others to excel in their roles, skills that have been fundamentally important in my ability to lead successfully at AZPCA.

Our club relies on strong leadership that can identify, encourage, and guide chairpersons, board members, and general member volunteers. I believe we have a great core team of individuals, and we can do even better by engaging more members who are willing and excited to get involved. As President, I would strive to ensure our club runs smoothly and our events are well-organized by providing the necessary support.

I have been honored to serve as your Vice President for the past two years and as HPDE chair for the past five. I am asking for your vote to further expand my efforts in enhancing the ownership experience through the various activities offered by AZPCA.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - President

Steve Sapareto – Candidate for President

I am a semi-retired Medical Physicist and have been active in the PCA for 30 years. I have been President of the Southern Arizona Region and twice President of the Arizona Region. I have been an editor of Going Places and have organized Flight twice. I have been an instructor for DE including setting up our first classroom program for DE. I have organized many tours over the years including Hot Air Tours to New Mexico and Off-Road tours. I currently own seven Porsches (but only 4 are running). I am currently on the board and believe my experience would allow me to keep AZ Region one of the best in the country.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates -

My name is Mark Baker. I am running for the position of Vice-President of the AZ Region of the Porsche Club of America for 2025-2026.

I have been a Porsche enthusiast for the past 25 years starting with my first used 1990 guards red Carrera 2. I have owned 8 different Porsches including Boxsters and 911s. I currently drive a 2015 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

I have been a member of the AZ Region Porsche Club for 9 years. I have served the club in a variety of positions over the past 8 years. Many of you may already know me as I organized the club monthly meetings for 3 years (2016 – 2019). I also served the club as Vice President (2019 – 2020), and President (2021 – 2022). I am currently serving as Past President until the end of this year. I also act as an administrator on Motorsportreg (where you register for club events), and as an administrator for the club website photo repository (SmugMug).

My wife Jeanne and I particularly enjoy bringing people together for social events, driving tours, and charity events. This includes past drives to Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and Mt Lemmon, and Casino Night Charity events at Alpios at Troon. We also organized the club Holiday Party in December of 2019. We are currently organizing an upcoming Driving Tour event to Cottonwood in September, and one in April of 2025 to Tucson (Tucson Desert Museum and Old Tucson).

If elected, I hope to continue to add my energy and enthusiasm to help the club grow, prosper, and be a fun and welcoming place for all members to enjoy.

Thank you, Mark Baker

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Vice-President

Andy Cole – Candidate for AZPCA Vice President, 2024

I wish to be considered for the position of Vice President as the AZ club board transition into 2025. I have been a PCA member since 2017 with the Redwood Region PCA club in Sonoma/Marin counties in Northern California and transferred my PCA membership to AZPCA when my wife, Christine and I relocated from CA in February 2021. I held the position of news editor for almost 18 months and had just taken the role of VP Redwood Region when we left for AZ. I have been in the role of Chief Concours Judge at the club for 3 years and I believe I have much more to offer the AZPCA and would very much welcome the opportunity to serve as the club Vice President in support of the new President and the evolution of the AZPCA.

A brief history on myself - Originally from Leeds in the North of England and grew up following and still do, the Formula 1 motor racing and the Le Mans annual races. It was the Le Mans races back in the 70s and 80s that inspired me to focus on Porsches and although it has taken me many years to achieve my motoring dream, I am now fortunate to be a very happy Porsche owner for the past 7+ years. I started with a 987 Boxster and was encouraged to enter many concours events culminating in a 2nd place at the 2019 Werks Reunion in Monterey. Late in 2019 I replaced my Boxster with my lifelong dream of a 911 Carrera convertible and have spent the last 2 years making this car my own with Martini livery, Porsche Sports Exhaust, and some carbon fiber interior upgrades. As with many other PCA members, one of the biggest benefits of being involved with a club is the great like-minded people you meet and the lifelong friends that you make, it’s these relationships that assist with feedback and input on where/what/how the club could change as we plan for the future.

I work full time for a Data Storage company, Pure Storage, head quartered in Santa Clara, CA and I continue to provide high end detailing services for family and friends at the weekend/evenings. I love new technology especially when it moves into the auto industry and I am very interested in the electric/hybrid vehicles we see popping up from all auto manufacturers. That said, there is nothing that beats a screaming flat 6 or 8 cylinder Porsche and I believe these will be here for some time to come.

I would very much appreciate your consideration and vote for Vice President of the AZPCA.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Director at Large

Frank J Grimmelmann - Candidate for Director at Large

I seek and would appreciate your support to further contribute and provide continuity to our club by continuing to serve on the AZPCA Board of Directors as a Member at Large. As an active member of Arizona PCA since 2002, I have actively engaged in both driving and social events consistently over the years. Previously serving on the AZ PCA Board as a Director at Large currently in 2023/2024 and previously in 2012/2013, I would like to continue to support our elected officers and the club through proven experience. After completing my earlier term, I elected to step aside to provide others with the opportunity to contribute, while continuing as an active member participating in many social and driving events. Presently, I arrange the summer Porsche & Pancakes event and plan to continue to do so along with continuing to introduce special driving events. Previously, I served as the Chairman of Phoenix Flight 27 supported by a phenomenal planning team. I have been fortunate to own five Porsche’s over the years and presently own two that remain active in the Club. Also, having been in senior management positions and serving on of both non-profit and for-profit organization’s boards of directors presently and over my career for many years, I fully support and understand the significant responsibility as a Board Member. I look forward to further contributing and elevating the Porsche marque among enthusiasts. The People make the club and with your support I look forward to continuing to raise the bar and the experience that we can all enjoy together.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Director at Large

Rod Ladd – Candidate for Director at Large

I have been in property management business for close to 20 years with our families commercial properties. I have also been a long time Rotarian ,Eagle Scout and Porsche enthusiast (only own 5 , Alpio has me beat ) Being new to the club last year, upon my brother-in-law recommending us to to join, Both my wife and I agree that this is a fun group with awesome drives and are fully committed to having a good time.

AZPCA 2025 Board of Directors Candidates - Director at Large

KENNETH ALLAN MITCHELL – Candidate for Director at Large

I joined the Porsche Club of America in 1986 and was a member of the Sacramento Valley Region. In 2019, my wife, Jean, and I moved to Sun City West and are full-time residents. In early 2020, Jean and I transferred our membership of record to the Arizona Region.

We have enjoyed the many activities that this great Region hosts for their members. Also, I participate in the Autocross Events and on many occasions volunteer to help set up the events for the Autocross Chairs. I also wrote the Autocross Event newsletter articles for the Region’s Newsletter “Going Places”. Also, I volunteer to perform the Timing & Scoring, and Grid/Technical Inspection duties for the Region’s High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials events. Last year, Jean and I attended the PCA Parade Event.

Two years ago, I asked the members of this Region for their vote to support me for the 2023-2024 Director-atLarge seat on the Arizona Region Board of Directors. I would like to thank those members for supporting me. I have decided to run again for the same seat on the Board of Directors and I am asking the members of this Region for their support.

During my 2023-2024 term, Region President, Mark Manente, created a new Chair Position and appointed me as the Communications Chair, in addition to my regular Director-at-Large responsibilities. As the Communications Chair, I was responsible for ensuring that critical event and activities information is disseminated to the Region’s members and the same information is included on the Zone 8 Activities Calendar.

In my first term, I set a goal for myself to learn my new responsibilities as a Director-at-Large in order to be the best Director in order to best serve the members of this Region. If I am re-elected for a second term, I would like to set a couple of goals for the Region’s membership to have a large selection of activities to choose from to enjoy with other Region members.

A couple of activities I would like to see for our members are Car Rallying and Technical Sessions during the 2025-2026 term. I would also like to see that our members’ Juniors become Junior PCA Members and have activities to include those junior members of all ages.

Your vote for me could help make these activities possible. Please vote for me to be re-elected for the 20252026 Director-at-Large seat on the Arizona Region Board of Directors.

Upcoming Driving Tour: Wickenburg-Bagdad

Driving Tour: Wickenburg – Bagdad Loop

Thursday, October 10, 2024

Let’s enjoy a driving loop through Wickenburg and Bagdad and then back to Wickenburg for lunch. This drive will be on a Thursday, helping us to avoid weekend traffic congestion and to better enjoy the views along the way. From our meeting point in North Phoenix to lunch in Wickenburg the approximate driving distance is 185 miles

This will be a very fun drive, as the Wickenburg – Bagdad loop has three very nice roads with lots of curves. Our meeting point will be at Tramonto Marketplace near I-17 and Carefree Highway in North Phoenix. From there we will travel west on AZ-74 to US-93 for our first break, just north of Wickenburg at the US-93 & Vulture Mine Rd roundabout Mobil station.

After our break is where the fun begins, as we continue our tour north on US-93 to AZ-89, which takes us on a thrilling drive along the edges of Granite Mountain. Once we reach Kirkland Junction, that will bring us to Kirkland Valley Road, the second leg on the loop This will lead us westward to AZ-96 and into Bagdad at Bashas’ supermarket for our second break. After our break we will then double back on AZ-96 towards AZ-97 for the third leg of the loop.

AZ-97, dubbed by many as “Roller Coaster” for its numerous dips, inclines, and tight turns, is an 11-mile stretch of road ending at US-93 AZ-97 easily earns its nickname! Once on AZ-93 we will head back towards Wickenburg for lunch After lunch everyone will be on their own for a leisurely drive back home.

Driving Tour Review - Durango, Gateway & Moab

Mountains, Motor Cars and Monsoons

G

erman-engineered cars, Porsches 22 in total, traversed some of the most beautiful country in North America August 18-August 24. The Porsche Arizona Region sponsored the majestic drive that would climb from the AZ desert floor to touching 11,500 plus feet above sea level. The drive started at Denny’s in Fountain Hills, AZ. The drive started out not so scenic along I40, with lots of trucks to get around. The drive was pretty much AZ country until we hit southwestern Colorado and pulled into the town of Durango, CO. Durango has kept its old cowboy charm while adding some upscaled amenities.

The group stayed at the Hilton Doubletree right on the Animas River. Rook and Debbie Younger had planned a great trip with easy access to great restaurants and, most importantly, some of the best driving opportunities in North America. I recommend the restaurant 636 Main Ave. with great food and ambiance along with great shopping.

Day 2 was when the real fun began. This was a day to spend sightseeing or sight-driving. The first chance to rev your engines on The Million Dollar Highway was not missed by many. For the sightseeing group, a train ride to Silverton, Colorado was a chance to see the majestic Rockies while relaxing. For those of us who chose sight-driving, the trip to Silverton has some of the best twists and turns in North America. Once we reached Silverton, it was interesting to go to the iconic Handlebar Bar and Grill. Owned by Phoenix native Ken, who shares his time between Silverton and Scottsdale.

The adrenaline was pumping as we continued with another curve-filled amazing drive up the Million Dollar Highway to Telluride. A quick stop in the town said to be the Switzerland of America- Ouray, CO was a visit to an amazing mountain town where Cascade Falls runs down the mountain just east of Main Street. When we reached the ski town nestled between the majestic peaks of Colorado, the views were magnificent. The opportunity to see it all including Wilson’s Peak the famous peak featured on the Coors light can could be had riding up the lift. Once we reached the top, we treated ourselves to the delicious lunch fare and basked in the beauty of the day. After lunch a little shop poking to work off the damage and then we were back on the Million Dollar Highway back to Durango.

The locals, even the dogs loved the Porsches some hung out truck windows giving us an appreciative woofwoof as we flew by. The police officers didn’t love us as much, with a few stern reprimands to slow down and spread out. Everyone has a job to do, and you have to respect them for doing theirs.

As the days progressed, the drives continued with the car’s personalities stealing the show. From the “QKRABBIT” to “KERMIT 6” both frogs and rabbits alike did more than hop their way up those mountains. While other cars like “DOBEUS” may question many of life’s mysteries, “UFO 4S” teaches us to embrace them while racing up the mountain together. “RTR I8” is a nod to 18 championships with its houndstooth and pounding power, and the “KAHRERRA” and “McCANN” recognize just a few of the Porsche models and makes that traversed these roads together.

The beautiful greens and blues of Colorado gave way to the deep reds and oranges of the southwest as we made our way to Moab, Utah, with an unexpected oasis in the middle of the red rocks for lunch in Gateway Colorado at the Gateway Canyon Resort and Spa. Car lovers enjoyed the on-site car museum which displayed part of the Hendricks’ private collection. Once we reached Moab and our final destination at Red Cliffs Lodge, we enjoyed some of the most spectacular red mountains and rock formations on the planet, with the beautiful Colorado River running through it.

Driving Tour Review - Durango, Gateway & Moab

The scale of Moab engulfs the beauty we enjoy in Sedona, AZ. Whether you are at Canyonlands State Park or the Arches State Park, the beauty of the Southwest is everywhere your eye can see. The exhilaration continued with drives along canyon walls that housed the ancients. It’s amazing to share the human experience through the visuals these ancient people created. Petroglyphs sprinkled along the canyon walls showed pictures of everyday life, wildlife, and the belief in something bigger than all of us.

Our final evening was a great time with a wonderful cowboy dinner followed by a monsoon that flooded Castle Creek, breaking its banks. There were a few worried car owners, but the good news is all cars survived without incident. The hotel team was great, with the management team bringing their broncos in to provide rides down to the cabins where the washed-out bridge was too flooded for Porsches to traverse.

Debbie and Rook not only planned and executed a wonderful driving extravaganza, they created the magic that happens when you bring the joy of driving coupled with the beauty of the great outdoors and the camaraderie of people who love their Porsches together.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

I have a 2013 911 (991.1) cabriolet, fondly known as Martina due to the Martini livery we applied

3. Where are you from?

I grew up in the north of England in a city called Leeds.

4. Family?

6. What makes your car special?

I have modified/upgraded our 911 extensively over the 5 years we have owned the car. Martina has been lowered with Tech Art springs, fitted with 20” 5 spoke fuchs OEM wheels, and had Martini livery applied to make her look unique. Replacement convertible top was installed in 2022 with a red top as the original black top had perished around the hinge mechanism. The interior has also had extensive OEM carbon pieces installed to offset the luxor beige interior. Finally, a full Porsche OEM sports exhaust was fitted in August 2021.

PnP Review - 11th Annual Anthem Brunch

11th Annual "Brunch ‘a Little” AZPCA Porsche and Pancakes Event Most Successful Ever at Anthem’s Ironwood Clubhouse

What do you do on a picture-perfect weekend morning in Arizona when the temperature has finally cooperated and clear blue skies are on the horizon? Answering that question, Maria and I were pleased to welcome our AZPCA Member’s and friends to celebrate the 11th anniversary of our signature Brunch ‘a little event at Anthem’s Ironwood Club House in beautiful Anthem Country Club. This past Saturday, 145 participants with 85 gleaming Porsche’s on display completed the picture Filling in the circular drive-in front of the Ironwood clubhouse, displayed were some of the finest and most diverse examples of German engineering, those participating didn’t disappoint. Participants (and likely a few passing Anthem residents) enjoyed coffee in front of the clubhouse while admiring the vehicles on display. Growing roughly 20% from our 2023 10th Anniversary ‘Tin’ celebration (inappropriate designated given the steel art onsite), it’s great to see that the interest and passion to view a phenomenal collection of cars and share scrumptious food with friends in a stellar setting remains strong.

The event's ambiance was enhanced by the smooth, soulful sounds of Raymond Love and New Groove Entertainment, who delivered exceptional easy listening jazz, offering the perfect soundtrack for the day's festivities. Their support and performance were widely appreciated, setting a relaxed tone for the morning and contributing substantially to the ambiance that hit a new high

Returning for the 11th year, a special highlight was the work of Richard Bernal, who captured generous individual and group photos. Participants received on-the-spot printouts of their personal photo taken with their Porsche, a memento to be remembered by all. With Richard donating everything in past years, this year the photos were supported by the generosity of Pool Barrier child/pet resistant fences and Above & Beyond Pool Restoration as event sponsors who also donated a gift basket. The raffle for the newly introduced gift basket this year, saw AZPCA’s own Anna Mackin walk away with the prize as the lucky winner.

Our team of volunteers led by Bill Stubbs supported by David Tomato, Gregg Bull, Mark Baker, and Michael McBride made the placement of the cars around the circle flow smoothly with precision. My wife Maria Grimmelmann led the group that included DeLynn Conley, and Jill Wilkerson handling the check-ins and Jeanne Snyder Baker gracefully made sure everyone checked-in before entering the ballroom. David Tomato also produced a Lexan clear donation box so that we could also raise moderate funds for our St. Vincent’s de Paul Charity, thanks David for hitting it over the top. Naturally, with a group this size we needed a little drama that came in the form of one of our physician Member’s being on call and with an emergency arising needing to exit. Of course, his car was the furthest in the circle, but our team rose to the challenge assisting him in exiting without incident and we trust successfully responding to the emergency. Finally, kudos to Mike Ferrings, Greg Bookspan, Gregg & Ali Bull, and Kenny Mitchell, our webmasters, Going Places editors and email blasters without whose help none of you would have been aware of the event. These individuals contribute all year in the background and are never sufficiently recognized for the contribution they make, thank you! We couldn’t do it without all of you working individually and as a team, thanks for your support!

The staff at Anthem Country Club raised the bar as well, with Gibson Capua (first event with us) and our veteran Chef Matthew greasing the skids to make everything flow flawlessly. The addition of eggs and bacon to the main buffet table and a creative layout assured that everyone could have exceptional made to order omelets while streamlining the process to get everyone through the buffet lines in record time. A few of course found the bar in the corner to be a healthy diversion on the way to exceptional foodJ Of course, it takes a team and hats off the entire staff who supported the event.

The energy, camaraderie, and joy shared made this year’s brunch one for the books. With over 2,500 members, as AZPCA continues to grow, events like this celebrating cars, community, and connection showcase all our thriving passion for Porsches and one-another

PnP Review - 11th Annual Anthem Brunch

Remember that it’s all about the cars and the people, see everyone next year although the bar set will be a tough one to beat thanks to the generosity of all we’ll do our best!

Driving Tour Review - Tonto Natural Bridge

September 15th AZPCA Driving Tour to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

This weekend, as new members of the Porsche Club Arizona, my husband Bryan and I had the pleasure of joining a drive to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park to explore the stunning natural travertine bridge. It was a fantastic opportunity to mingle with existing members, experience a breathtaking part of Arizona, and enjoy engaging conversations that hopefully mark the beginning of lasting friendships.

The drive from Scottsdale to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park was an exhilarating experience, especially as part of Group #2, where we maintained impressive speeds through the expansive desert landscape. The route from Scottsdale took us through the Mogollon Rim and Payson, where the desert gave way to dramatic cliffs and winding roads. The convoy of Porsches slicing through the open road was a sight to behold, with the sleek lines of each car reflecting the sun’s rays as we carved our way through Arizona’s rugged terrain. The desert, with its towering saguaros and endless horizon, served as the perfect backdrop, adding to the adrenaline of the drive. Feeling the power and precision of our Porsches in sync with the group was nothing short of electrifying.

Driving Tour Review - Tonto Natural Bridge

Once we arrived at the park, there were plenty of options for everyone to enjoy Some members gathered under the ramada to relax and eat lunch together, while others toured the historic main house or set off on one of the hiking trails. Bryan and I, along with a few others, chose the more adventurous option of hiking to the travertine bridge. The variety of activities gave everyone a chance to experience the park in their own way, whether through conversation, exploration, or adventure.

The hike to the bridge was a bit challenging, especially navigating the slippery travertine. Beza, John, Bryan, and I tackled the travertine tunnel and scaled the side of a large rock, which made the adventure all the more thrilling. For me, it was an absolute blast, made even better by John's suggestion of a scenic route home filled with more twists and turns, perfect for a Porsche!

It wasn’t just a drive, it was a shared passion coming to life on the open road. As new residents of Wickenburg, being welcomed into such an exciting and passionate community has made our transition to Arizona all the more rewarding.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly. If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:

1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.

2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.

3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).

4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).

5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES

DELOREAN The Rise, Fall and Second Acts of the DeLorean Motor Company by Matt Stone, published 2024 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA

This book provides a comprehensive discussion of DeLorean, the company. It is a complex story of a gigantic undertaking. The meteoric career of John Z DeLorean is summarized by way of introduction, and he is present in all discussions of what was very much his company. Unlike other personal auto companies (e.g. Ferrari, Honda, Porsche, Toyota, and to a lesser extent Lamborghini), which started with a few hand built examples and gradually expanded into substantial production, DeLorean started at the top, with intended production of some 8,000 vehicles the first year. DeLorean had a concept, but no chassis design, no engine selected, no factory, unresolved questions about fabrication materials, and a multitude of other loose ends, but DeLorean’s did get built. How that happened really is an incredible story, well covered in this quite readable book.

Starting from the beginning when DeLorean left General Motors, the DeLorean car is discussed in terms of its design, development and production by the Company. John DeLorean, possibly because of his experiences leading large pieces of General Motors thought in 'Detroit' terms. His vision was of a car that would feature his favorite concepts, one of which was the abolition of 'Detroit's focus on planned obsolescence.

It could be said that John Z. DeLorean was an idiot, blinded to reality by a superhuman ego. It could also be said that he was a proven genius who, except for the interference of the FBI, would have revolutionized the entire auto industry with the concepts implemented in the DMZ automobile. In any event, DELOREAN covers an interesting and complex story, presented in a readable fashion. There are many pictures with comprehensive captions, and occasional sidebars showing contemporary announcements and advertisements as well as some 'headline phrases' more or less relevant to the discussion on that page. Many photos illustrate th e complexities of this story. Chapter headings, like the title, use the same font as that of the DMC car badge.

Porsche is mentioned because of the way 911 and 914s served as prototypes for DeLorean's rear-engine configuration, and because Porsche was solicited to do design work for DeLorean but were deemed too expensive and too slow. More compatible was the ethos of Lotus, though the funding for their work created some controversy.

The “Back To The Future” chapter provides insight into how the movie came about and was resurrected. The DeLorean After the Fact chapter makes the DeLorean world seem to be surprisingly alive and well, based on a large stock of left-over original parts, and ideas for re-establishing production.

Very well illustrated with photographs, drawings, clips of contemporary literature and key 'slogans'. printed as sidebars on many pages. There are two pictures of 911s and a picture of a DeLorean design studio showing a large cutaway drawing of a 914 on th e wall. All in all, very complex and interesting story, well presented. Included in the back of the book is an Prologue about John DeLorean, a piece about the author's involvement with DeLorean automobiles, an extensive description of other information references and a fairly extensive Index,

DELOREAN is hardbound with 192, 8-1/2 x 10 inch heavyweight pages. By the time you read this it should be available for $40 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from quartoknows.com.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

Would You Buy a Porsche…Condo?

Porsche has collaborated on the design of a 60-story tower in Miami with 132 condos. What makes this building a Porsche is an innovative elevator called the Deservator. It transports you and your car to your unit. The tower also has optional car concierge services that include valeting and maintenance of your beloved Porsche.

It was built in March 2107 as a collaboration between Porsche Design and U.S.-based Dezer Development.

What Are the Condos Like?

Each condo is two-story, with European-designed finishes, cabinetry, and kitchens. They all come with Miele appliances and Toto automatic toilets. Condos have between 800 to 1,600 square foot balconies. Owners can keep an eye on their Porsche via a glass-garage window looking into their private sky garage.

How Much Do the Condos Cost?

As of September 20, there were 22 condos for sale. Prices ranged from $6.5 million for a 2-bd, 3,100 sf unit to a 4-bd, 6,121 sf residence for $14.95 million.

The most expensive condo sold for $32.5 million in 2016. It has an 11-car garage and is on the 57th floor, making for incredible ocean and city views. It is a 4-bd, 6.5 bath unit with 16,915 square feet. It has 22 ft. ceilings and a private pool. There are four elevators: one internal, 2 for guests, and (of course) one for the cars. The personal 4-car garage is air-conditioned, and visible from the apartment.

How the Dezervator Works

This unique car elevator was designed by, and named after, developer Gil Dezer. Elevator Today Magazine said, “The ‘Dezervator’ has not only brought parking technology to the next stage of evolution, but it has also re-shaped condominium living, with the ability to have your vehicle literally at your front door.”

Residents access the elevator through the building’s ground-floor garage. They park on an automated platform in front of their exclusive elevator. The car is placed in the park position and the engine shuts off. The platform and the elevator then rotate into alignment and position the car for entering the Dezervator.

Next, a dolly slides a plate under the car, grabs all four wheels and draws the car, with the passengers inside, into the elevator. The car is locked into place on a circular, rotatable platform. As the elevator ascends, the platform slowly rotates, providing passengers a 360-degree view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Once the elevator reaches the destination apartment, the car is re-positioned to exit, and the Dezervator’s door opens. The dolly slides the car off the conveyor, automatically placing it in its allocated space.

Where Is the Porsche Design Tower?

The Miami Tower is located in Sunny Isles Beach, in between Bal Harbour and Aventura. Its location gives views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The area has high-end shopping, restaurants, art galleries, and nightspots. It’s only 20 minutes from both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale airports.

Amenities

Like many resort condominium complexes, residents have exclusive access to a private restaurant, private chilled wine lockers, and an outdoor lounge bar facing the ocean. There is also a pool with food and beverage service, and a state-of-the-art fitness center with ocean-front views.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

Unlike most other towers, they also have a private cinema, golf simulator, and - probably unique to the Towera racing simulator.

Who Lives There?

There are 22 billionaires who live in the Tower.

• Brazilians: media mogul Edir Macedo, AGBI Real Assets owner Luciano Lewandowski, Dr. Jose BenHur de Escobar Ferraz Neto, and Dr. Rogerio C. Afonso

• Russians: Igor Yakovlev and Galina Yakovlev who control retailer Eldorado and Moscow real estate magnate Chingiz Askerov

• Colorado Rockies player Carlos Gonzalez

• Poles: Dariusz Robert Wojdyga, one of the top 100 richest Poles

• Mexican billionaire Carlos Peralta Quintero

Would you buy one of these condos? Do you wish there was one in our area? Let me know at the next Porsches and Pancakes breakfast!

t’s an American dream. The fact that fabled designer Ralph Lauren hails from that northern borough of Gotham, the Bronx. Especially when you see how far Ralph Lifshitz, his original name, has come.

I happen to know the Bronx. At least I used to. My parents both grew up there. When I was growing up, we spent many, many weekends visiting both sets of grandparents there. All four were immigrants from Eastern Europe, just like Ralph’s parents I remember my grandmother taking me to the local butcher, and how fascinated I was that there was an inch-deep layer of sawdust on the floor, just like in the old country.

Of course, this scene is long gone. My parents moved away, just like Ralph, to find fame and fortune elsewhere. But Ralph did it better than just about anybody you can name. Not only did he become a famous fashion designer, his genius, what set him apart, was his ability to create a vaguely Brit-Euro-Classic world, totally removed from the Bronx, a world of impeccable taste that probably never existed. But which, for a princely sum, any aspiring esthete could sample.

The fashion and the retail empire go without saying. But then there’s the homes -- the apartment in Manhattan, the houses, in Montauk and Bedford, New York, the place in Jamaica and the ranch in Montrose, CO.

I once passed the ranch. How did I know? Driving along, heading from Telluride to Montrose, I marveled at a wood and groove fence, a perfect fence, that went on and on and on and on … until it paused at the ranch entrance, where the Double RL logo was carved into a wooden entrance trellis, only to pick up again, on the other side, for … who knows how long.

It's said that Ralph spreads his well-documented collection of automotive hyperventilation around his properties. Which seems only suitable. I’d do the same. What I didn’t know is that his latest venture is a line of home furniture. And not just throw rugs that match his lines of men’s and women’s clothing. Oh no, this furniture gets its inspiration from his actual cars.

It's all documented in an issue of Architectural Digest that arrived in my e-in-box, recently. Here’s the headline; “Passion for Cars Inspires Sleek New Furniture.” The subhead reads, “The Modern Driver collection by Ralph Lauren Home foregrounds materials, motifs, and construction methods rooted in automotive excellence. And there’s Ralph, in all black, shades too, next to his Lamborghini Reventon His silver hair matches the car color.

Oh my. To quote the article, “…. an update to the Beckford table lamp features wire mesh reminiscent of the grille on Mr. Lauren’s own 1929 Blower Bentley.” Then there’s a photo of the Astor salad plate, which is imprinted with what looks like the speedometer from Ralph’s XK120 Jaguar

Yes, when it comes to the phrase “no accounting for taste,” Ralph’s in the hall of fame, his own personal hall of fame. And he’s giving you yet another way to buy in to his vision.

Not that Porsche hasn’t tried to keep up. You thought you were cool because you had a pair of Puma Porsche Design running shoes. A PD chronograph. The folding sunglasses.

Danielle’s Column - How to Embrace our Past

No, no, Porsche now seems to be seeing Ralph, and raising him with an all-in bet Just a few days after the Architectural Digest arrived, I received a missive from Porsche, introducing “The Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years.” And, under that headline were three subheads, reading “Exclusive 50th anniversary model of the 911 Turbo” and “Limited to 1,974 units” and “Design evokes historic 911 Turbo models.”

Why do I feel like I’ve seen this picture before? Maybe because I have. The release notes that the model is based on a loaded 911 Turbo S, with the same hyper-motive engine, the same active suspension, the same LED matrix headlights, the same PCCB brakes, and so forth. What’s different? “Turbonite” accents in the interior, a Turbo 50 logo here and there and, if you opt for the “Heritage Design” package, more throw-back logos and colors, inside and out.

Is it my imagination or hasn’t Porsche been issuing limited edition “collector” versions of the 911 since, at least, the Weissach edition of the 911 SC in 1980?

But wait, there’s more. A watch. No, not just a watch, an “Exclusive Chronograph for a timeless sports car,” a “special timepiece as an homage to the anniversary model.” Also limited to 1,940 units. “The limited-edition number engraved on the titanium housing corresponds to the limited-edition number of the vehicle,” says the release. Of course.

Ok, let’s regroup. Ralph’s table lamp reminiscent of a Blower Bentley, or Porsche’s 911 Turbo S with added frou-frou. What would you aspire to? Or not?

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Tech Engine Mounts

There is a viral video going around of two 911 crashing into each other causing one of the 911 (991) engines to be ejected from the vehicle. A longtime customer asked me how that can happen in a modern car. I explained it is due to the Porsche engine and transmission layout and how they are mounted. With the introduction of the 911 in the 60’s Porsche designed the engine and transmission to be held into the chassis with rubber isolated engine and transmission mount.

These mounts are great at letting the engine move a small amount with engine torque and more importantly does not let annoying engine noise and vibration into the cabin.

Over the years Porsche has used this engine mount design into the modern cars, some with interesting upgrades. This design means the rear engine cars (911) have two mounts holding the engine and one mount for the transmission. In the mid engine Porsche cars (Boxster/Cayman) the engine is held in by one mount and the transmission two mounts. Those mounts between the two layouts are almost the same! So the boxster transmission mounts are very similar to 911 engine mounts and vice versa.

Years ago PORSCHE came out with a new engine/transmission mount that changed how engines are mounted into vehicles. The mount looks about the same but has an electrical connection on it. These mounts are active, which means the fluid inside the mount can be changed by electricity.

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Tech Engine Mounts

This will make the mount soft or hard by just a push of the button.

Non-sports cars like Cayenne’s have engine mounts that are diVerent. Due to the engine height of the V style engines the mounts are under the engine and a top mount that is there to keep the engine torque from moving the engine. On these cars the mounts are more diVicult to change and can have expensive bills.

How do you know when you need engine mounts. For front engine cars like Macan’s and Cayenne’s the engine will “ground out” when the mounts are failed. So when the car is started you will feel and hear engine vibrations. The worse the mounts are the more vibrations you will feel. Sports cars the passenger seat will vibrate at idle and the exhaust tips will be hanging down. Boxsters will have poor shifting with a bad engine mount. If you are having any of these issues it’s a good idea to have your mounts checked out. One last point, rubber has a hard time in the dry Arizona heat, so engine mounts tend to wear out fastest.

Tech tip of the month- The weather is finally getting cooler which is great! It’s been a long summer. So, one of these mornings you are going to start your car and get a warning on the dash that your tire pressure is low. This is due to the drop in temperature, for every 10 degrees of temperature change will give you one PSI change. So, if you aired up your tires in the heat you might have to add some air.

Scott’s hot buy- I have seen some good deals on 996 Turbo’s lately.

It’s a lot of car for the money and should be a collectors car at some point.

Like always make sure to get a Pre purchase inspection.

Who is Scott McIlvain

The current Mcilvain Motors was founded by Scott Mcilvain, great grandson of E.H “Mac” Mcilvain. Scott was hooked on the family business and performance cars at a very early age. He left Prescott and attended Arizona State University where he earned a degree in business. It was while Scott was an account manager at a top 25 marketing agency that he fell in love with his first PORSCHE, a 1979 930. Fast forward to today and Scott now runs Mcilvain Motors, located in Tempe, Arizona and one of the leading independent and affordable late model PORSCHE service specialists.

Stuttgart Market Letter

Ninety Million Dollars. $90m. $90,000,000. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that number. For context, over the last two years of tracking the market, the highest total dollar volume of Porsches sold in a single month was $59.9m in December of last year. And the market just trounced that by $30m.

Now, you might be saying, “of course it was a good month, we had Monterey!” Well, August of 2023 produced just $58m from 680 cars on offer selling at a 66% sell-through rate (STR). Monterey alone this year almost reached that number, with $54.5m in sales from 141 Porsches on offer selling at a 68% STR. So how did it break down, and where was the uptick in what many people have been calling a “correcting market?”

As you probably assumed, that uptick came at the very top of the market thanks to sixteen million-dollar-plus sales compared to just seven last year. And of those sixteen, six hammered at a higher price than our $1.9 top sale of Monterey 2023. Leading the pack was an uber-rare 1997 911 GT1 Rennversion that hammered at $6.4m followed by a 1976 935 at $3.9m. Both are rare cars and deserving of their high bids, but for me, I was very excited to see the first Singer DLS and a RUF CTR 2.

The Dynamics & Lightweight Study (DLS) from Singer hammered at $2.8m, about on par with asking prices online when you add in the buyer’s fee. The RUF CTR 2 set a new record for ANY RUF sold at auction at a final bid of $1.9m. With the previous RUF high of $1.8m for a 25th Anniversary CTR, it makes you wonder what a truly rare-as-hen’s-teeth original CTR would sell for these days. $4-5m? Let’s hope we get a chance to find out soon.

It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows at the top of the market, though. Early Porsche race cars and prototypes continued to struggle at auction with neither of the 550 Spyders selling along with a 718 RSK, 904 GTS, and 906 Carrera 6. But the biggest surprise was how sluggish bids were on Carrera 2.7 RS’. The last two 2.7 RS Lightweights we saw at auction achieved just below $2m. All three 2.7 RS Lightweights failed to sell at Monterey with the highest bid being just $1.2m.

So Monterey was stellar, but what about the rest of the market? August 2024 brought in $34.7m from a huge 701 units with a STR of 66% compared to $31.9m from 560 units and a 68% STR last year and $30.5m from 616 units and a STR of 66% last month.

We saw a number of firsts this month with the first 2024 911 S/T to hit the auction block selling at a final bid of $602,500. We also saw the first 2023 911 GT3 RS with the Tribute to Carrera RS sell for $487,500 followed by a second example selling for $460,000.

Stuttgart Market Letter

Overall, the market continues to chug along with most models selling at or around average prices plus or minus a few thousand dollars. The best of the bunch continues to bring in the money, as they should, and the rest seem to be a harder sell as it appears the market is becoming a bit more patient with their money.

Next month brings us sales with Mecum in Dallas and the annual Saratoga Motorcar Auction in New York. I expect things to stay pretty steady, but my expectations have been trounced before!

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

Interested in Porsche market trends?

Sign up for PCA’s free monthly e-newsletter, Mart Fresh News!

The Porsche Club of America features news, videos, and information about the current market for used Porsches in the monthly Mart Fresh News email newsletter.

Mart shoppers are PCA members who know Porsches, know what they’re looking at, and are serious, ready, willing, and able buyers — not tire kickers. Because PCA members take care of their Porsches, vehicle quality in The Mart is better than other websites. And these are not anonymous buyers and sellers, they are registered PCA members.

The Mart is one of the most visited parts of PCA.org, recording over 650,000 page views per month.

Mart Fresh News also highlights a variety of Porsche listings from PCA’s Mart Classifieds. When you find a vehicle in The Mart, you can be assured that it’s been cared for by a registered PCA member — not some anonymous seller.

In addition to your online Mart ad, you get a summary version of your ad in Porsche Panorama.

It’s a free benefit of membership — there is no charge to place an ad in The Mart!

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model

The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.
