PRESIDENT’S NOTE

Mark

Manente

“Meetings are indispensable when you don’t want to do anything.” – Ken Galbraith

The Club made a few changes for our December social calendar.

Our December Monthly Member Meeting is cancelled, in its place is the Club’s traditional holiday gettogether. This year it will be held on December 17th. Thank you, Angela, for planning the event in January while the club was searching for a replacement Social Chairperson. As with most social events the board has agreed to significantly subsidize the Holiday Party to encourage participation, as of this writing, we have 108 members/guests with a maximum of 120. Thank you all that have signed up! Our normal Monthly Member Meetings will begin again in January. At our November meeting Jim Bultema, our bonified author, was the “In-person Meet a Member”. What a life story both for him and Carole. Upcoming “In-person Meet a Member” guests: January, Dieter Guenter; February, Jim Golba (both of these members were pilots) and March, Jan Nyquist. Hopefully, I can cajole a few of you to tell us your story. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Boxing Day May the Spirit of the Holiday be with you throughout the New Year! Mark

From the EDITORS

Gregg and Ali Bull

Sometimes things happen in this world that makes no sense to any righteous, ecclesiastical individual with a modicome of decency about themelves, this is one such example.

As you will read on page 8, a truly horrific, dispicable act occured to one of our AZPCA family members, Please read the heartfelt message from the father of the victim. On a lighter note, we had some amazing events in the month of November. Our Monthly Meeting was held at Raven Gastropub and fun was had by all in attendance. Frank and Maria organized an amazing Polo event graciously hosted by Molina Fine Jewelers, we have put together a little article on pages 36 through 39 with some excellent photos. AutoX and HPDE hosted a couple excellent driving events and both were well represented. Rook and Debbie organized a very entertaining “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” driving tour through the Biltmore Estates culminating in a BBQ dinner at Rustler’s Rooste, see page 59. Dennis arranged the Porsche n’ Pancake at U.S. Egg, another well attended event. Alpio was kind enough to offer us his Troon Event location for a Formula 1 viewing event, it was catered by Sharko’s and huge thanks to Jim and Carole Bultema for organizing the food. Lastly but certainly not least, please turn to page 27 to welcome our newest AZPCA BOD members, Marty E returns as Treasurer, Gregg B returns as Club Secretary, Doug B and Steve S are our newest Director’s at Large, they will take up their positions in January 2024. Hopefully everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and can now set their sights on the upcoming Festive Holiday’s, Cheers from our family to yours.

We will be known forever by the tracks we leave. - Dakota

A heartfelt request to fellow AZPCA family members We have some very disturbing and sad new to tell you regarding a fellow AZPCA family member, When Mark M returned home after attending the F1 event, Angela informed him that Hans Schmidt, who is the son of AZPCA member Eric Schmidt, was the victim of a heinous violence. Eric has been an active Autocross participant and an AZPCA member.

As reported in the News, “A religious leader in Arizona is fighting for his life after being shot in the head earlier this week while preaching on a street corner in Glendale. Hans Schmidt, 26, a military medic and the Christian father of two children, was shot Wednesday around 6:15 p.m. in the area of 51st Avenue and Peoria, according to local authorities” As reported by FOX News.. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Hans Schmidt and his family get through these very difficult times, if you have it in your heart to help this family, they would be very grateful.

Help Hans Schmidt's family in their time of need, organized by Brad Currell

My name is Brad Currell and I'm doing this on behalf of a group of 50+ … Brad Currell needs your support for Help Hans Schmidt's family in their time of need www.gofundme.com

A Loving Tribute - Eugenie (Genie) Dodson

It is with a very sad heart that we must inform you that one of our long-time members has recently passed away, Eugenie (Genie) Dodson. Russ and Genie Dodson were AZPCA members for many, many years, and the beautiful words below are from Russ…

🧞

Eugenie (Genie ‍♀️) Anderson, MD, passed away peacefully, in her sleep 11-21-2023. She is survived by her husband, of 45 years, Russell Dodson, PA-C, and her brother, Courtney Anderson. She attended The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, in Baltimore Maryland. She practiced medicine in Phoenix, Arizona, as an OB/Gyn for over 45 years. She delivered about 1100 babies, including one that would one day many years later be my PA student. She was a member of the AZ Porsche Club, thru me. She loved driving our 911 on the race track, but she did not like waiting for her turn, or working a corner station. I worked them for her. She was an avid knitter, and reader. I will miss her! I planned her memorial service on MLK weekend. I wanted to be after the holidays and I thought she would like it. Genies ‍♀️services will be Saturday January 13th for MLK weekend @ 11:00am at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. MacDonald Dr, Mesa AZ 85201. Please feel free to share your thoughts with everyone.

🧞

A little history about Russ and Genie in Russ’s own words; I was president 3 years in a row!! The board had to meet and amend the bylaws to allow 3 terms in succession! After the first 2 years Genie wanted a second phone line, we were getting way too many Porsche calls and she was on call. This was way before cell phones so the board authorized payment for a second phone line for 1 year to keep me on as President. The previous president forgot to give me the BIG NOTE BOOK, that explained how everything was supposed to work as president. So I entered the club for the Pirelli prize and we won. I made the charity auction official, started nominal fees for events. When I took over the club had a negative $500 balance when I left we had all bills paid and $2000 in the account! It was a fun time! We named an award for Jack and Loretta Aman for club participation so they could not win it every year!! Then I won it in 1993!!!!

🧞

💜💜💜💜 Hope this helps! Genie🧞‍♀️put up with me the whole n time!!

Prescott Holiday Lights Drive Sunday, December 10, 2023 Come along on this drive and enjoy time celebrating the holidays with your PCA friends! Known as “Arizona’s Christmas City,” Prescott celebrates with lights, music, and festive flair from November-January. Throughout the month of December, the Courthouse Square is aglow with a gorgeous display of lights that adorn more than 100 trees at the iconic courthouse and surrounding plaza. The driving route follows “the Spars,” which we have taken many times on our way to Prescott. The twisting curves and beautiful scenery make for an ideal drive in our Porsches.

On arrival in Prescott, we will gather for dinner at the Gurley Street Grill, where we will enjoy selections from a menu designed just for our group. After dinner the plaza will be lit up in a festive celebration of the holiday season. You can stroll the plaza, check out the surrounding shops, and maybe have a hot drink or two. You may choose to return to the Valley that evening, or some of us will plan to spend the night in the area. For more details and to REGISTER, CLICK HERE

AZPCA Drive Review : Flagstaff Fall Colors Tour STORY BY Rita Sprenkle 2023 Fall Colors Overnighter to Flagstaff

We went on the 2022 overnight PCA Fall Color tour and had so much fun we went again this year. We were

happy to be staying two nights in Flagstaff this year. We left Sunday late morning; about 30 cars - divided into two groups. Really appreciated the bio break about 60 minutes into the drive; then onto Sedona. Passing the wineries in Page Springs was beautiful (maybe next year we stop at a winery for lunch? Passengers can winetaste and drivers drink water!).

John and Andrea Grant joined us at Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill in Sedona for lunch. If you have never been to Mariposa, the food is great and the views from the hilltop restaurant patio overlooking the red rocks is spectacular.

After lunch we continued up 89A through Oak Creek Canyon — it is a cool ride with breathtaking scenery.

2023 Fall Colors Overnighter to Flagstaff

We arrived at the Little America Hotel about 3:30 PM. We had a Grand One King with Sofa Bed and Shower room. It was very modern, clean and spacious; the towels were super fluffy, and we loved the double sinks. The refrigerator and safe were a great added bonus. We stayed in Lodge 3 so we could park in the back where there always lots of empty parking spaces. It is a bit of a walk from lodge 3 to 2 (plus 2 steps) then lodge 2 to 1 (8 steps) then to the reception/bar/restaurant/gift shop but having plenty of parking is a great benefit and worth the walk. The Silver Pine hotel bar/restaurant was a great meet-up place after the ride – fun to make new friends. The gift shop always has very unique merchandise and worth a visit. On Monday, we had breakfast at the Toasted Owl (Cortland Blvd, exit 201 on I-40E) then drove to the Meteor Crater Visitor Center (exit 233). I-40 was a very well paved road with little traffic; it would have been a blast if other cars were on this tour and we could have had all the cars lined up on the road. Unfortunately, it was just the two of us so no cool road photos. [editor’s note: Rita, you and George missed the group visit to Meteor Crater in August!] You can purchase your tickets for the Visitor Center online in advance for a discount. The ticket included access to the Visitor Center, a film, interactive displays, outside observation deck for viewing, rest rooms and a guided tour. There is also a gift shop and restaurant. We spent about 90 minutes at the center, but skipped the one-hour outside guided tour.

On the way back, we stopped at the Walnut Canyon National Monument (exit 204 on I-40). This area is part of the National Park Foundation and there is an entrance fee. If you have a National Park Pass it is free for up to four people. For those unfamiliar, National Monuments are typically more than just a monument; this was the case at Walnut Canyon. In addition to the Canyon, there were remarkable rocks and ancient cliff dwellings. The Visitor Center had a very knowledgeable park ranger who shared lots of information. The center was handicapped friendly with elevators to move around the center. There was a gift shop and if you have a National Park Passport book, you can get a free stamp in your Passport book there. Your entrance fee includes a park film, museum, rest rooms, accessible viewpoints and two very well-groomed hiking trails with rails at the steps. Without doing the hikes, we spent about 30 minutes there. We plan to go back again next year when we have more time to hike the trails. 1. Island Trail 0.90-mile: Hike down into the canyon (287 step each way) to explore Native American cliff dwellings. 2. Rim Trail 0.75-mile Easy hike with sweeping views of the canyon and historic cultural sites.

2023 Fall Colors Overnighter to Flagstaff

Returning to Little America, we took old Route 66 through Flagstaff rather then 1-40. We met up with the group at Grimaldi’s for dinner and to watch Game 3 of the World Series. Great pizza and not so great game ☹. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the club-sponsored Prescott Holiday Lights Drive and recommend you put the hope Fall Colors Overnighter to Flagstaff on your calendar for October 2024.

AZPCA Drive Review II : Flagstaff Fall Colors Tour STORY BY AZPCA Fall Colors Tour to Flagstaff 10/29-10/31.

Dennis Rood

We gathered at Tramonto Marketplace at Carefree Highway/I-17. Rook had his briefing meeting, and we were off at about 10:00 AM. Great to see all the road work completed on Highway 17 in the new widening and reverse lane project. It is going to be great when finished. Exit on the road toward Cottonwood, then a winding drive through the wine country in Page Springs. People were on their own to choose a lunch destination in Sedona. Eight of us lunched at The Hudson. Great food and view. The next leg of the drive went through Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. There wasn’t much in the way of colors in the Canyon, but the day was bright and sunny all day. Checked into the Little America Hotel, which I think is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in with the club. We all gathered in the bar and then we stayed for dinner, which was very good. We highly recommend this hotel. The next morning, while everyone else went to one of many sightseeing destinations Rook and Debbie had listed for us, Nancy and I drove to the Grand Canyon for the day. It was cold and very windy when we got there — about 40 degrees (it had been 27 degrees the night before). Enjoyed the visitors center and the short video there. It even had some footage of large, eight-person inflatable rafts coming through the rapids with spray and water breaking over the entire raft (I went down the river in1992 from Page to Bar 10 Ranch where we were lifted out by a beautiful and welcome helicopter to Las Vegas). We ate lunch at El Tovar, an old “Swiss-chalet”-style hotel and restaurant, which was wonderful. We highly recommend this also. Getting back in our Porsche we were greeted by a flashing orange message on the dash that read, “Low on Fluid, do not drive on.” Pretty scary, but were able to find some correct G40 coolant and I topped it up with about a quart, and we drove back to dinner at Grimaldi’s Pizza in Flagstaff, where we met the rest of the group. Next day drove home with another car down Lake Mary Road to 87 and then 260 to Camp Verde and Highway 17. An interesting set of roads and beautiful sunshine. Thanks to Rook and Debbie for setting up this tour weekend. We met many new people, which always happens, and it was a wonderful experience.

But wait, there’s more....Flagstaff Fall Colors Tour I posted some pictures of the Riordan Mansion tour. The tour was very informative it highlighted the mansion and

it’s Arts and Crafts style architecture. We followed this up with an evening Halloween tour which was a little campy but fun. Also pictured was our lunch in Sedona at Saltrock Southwest Kitchen restaurant. Great location, good food and great service. Highly recommended. Another great lunch restaurant that we ate at in Flagstaff was the Toasted Owl. Thumbs up for that too. -Matthew Griffin

The Museum of Northern Arizona was an excellent choice on our short tour. Our very own AZPCA Club member

Carole Bultema was a volunteer there for many years and helped us all learn even more about the impressive Native American history, art and culture exhibits. We also drove up to the Snow Bowl. The leaf colors were past their vibrant prime, but still we managed to capture a photo with our Macans.

AZPCA Social Events - Ultimate Porsche Showcase Ultimate Porsche Showcase/Bentley Polo Championships 2023 How best to describe this annual event……Spectacular!

The highlight of the 2023 edition of the Bentley Polo Championship has to be without question the introduction of THE ULTIMATE PORSCHE SHOWCASE.

We must start of by thanking Frank and Maria Grimmelman for organizing such a grandiose event and to our gracious hosts Molina Fine Jewelers for supplying us a number of private tables and libations too, thanks. We had a record 60 cars signed up for the event and although a few dropped out it was still an amazing sight.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION FERRARI 75 YEARS by Dennis Adler, with foreword by Luigi Chinetti, Jr. published 2021 by Quarto Publishing Group,

Arguably, there are as many Ferrari books as there are Porsche books even if you are not a Ferrariphile, you still should have at

least one Ferrari book in your library. This book might well be the compendium of all things Ferrari that you need, but Formula 1 Ferraris are not covered. Benign as the is the appearance of the dust jacket, the cover of the book itself is pure in-your-face Ferrari red, complete with the Cavallino Rampante on a glaringly yellow shield. It will dominate any room on whose coffee table it resides. Profusely illustrated with comprehensive captions (in skinny, hard for ‘seniors’ to read type), this is as much a picture book as a literary tome. Other than the foreword, and a two-page ‘sidebar’ on the Chinetti’s and NART, this reviewer counted only 21 pages that were all text. The lines of text are widely spaced with wide margins providing an open feel to the pages, but the text is in a rather small font. The book has an unusual horizontal format which is eminently appropriate to the long sleek horizontal lines of Ferrari cars. There is Porsche content: the index lists nine pages mentioning Porsche, including a picture of a yellow ‘54 A Cabriolet! FERRARI 75 YEARS presents an interesting story of a car company that is, like Porsche, the dynasty on one man, and even more than Porsche, a company focused on racing. Interestingly, the book begins with a discussion of Cisitalia. The Cisitalia, as established Porschephiles will recall, was a would-be car company that gave a fledgling Porsche firm a contract for a Formula 1 car, the discussion of the Cistalia sports car program is presented as context, without clear connection to the development of Ferrari. Overall, it is a very readable fast-paced narrative with a great deal of detail, both about the vehicles and the people involved. Luigi Chenitti, it is made clear, had a bigger part in the story than just being a North American Ferrari dealer. Intimate detail is given about many other individuals who played bit parts (or more), in the Ferrari story. Even Henry Ford II and the ‘55-Tbird show up in this story. Some of the details are fascinatingly unexpected – who knew that Ferrari adopted the V-12 engine configuration for reasons that were more marketing related than based on sound engineering considerations. Despite having had a ride in a nearly new Dino Ferrari, this reviewer never really understood the Dino story until reading this book. For those steeped in the early years of Porsche history, a sports car maker whose cars did well in racing, the Ferrari story of a maker of race cars some of which could be driven on the street seems totally scatter brained. Because Ferrari did not do bodywork, it could produce car engines and chassis in model runs of a few as six. Body specialists like Touring, Vignali, Pinninfarina and Ghia etc, produced the ‘coachwork’, adding further complexity to model designations - there are no data tables in this book. FERRARI 75 YEARS is hardcover, with 336 10-3/4 x 8-1/2 inch heavyweight pages. It should be available for $50.00 from your favorite bookseller, or under “Ferrari” at QuartoKnows.com.

Passion is no ordinary word.... STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER

Does that headline ring a bell? It might, if you’re an afficionado of the late ‘70s/early’80s semi-punk

English rock beat from the soul of Graham Parker. Perhaps “Get Started, Start a Fire” will strike a spark. Or “Stupefaction.” Or “Local Girls.” Or “Heat Treatment.” No? Go check them out.

In all honesty, I don’t think his song about passion is anywhere near his best, but I do love the title. Because I couldn’t say it any better. I’d just take it farther. Not only is it no ordinary word, it’s no ordinary thing in our lives. In point of fact, it drives what we think, what we say, what we do. And how we do it. Take a love of cars. Please. Did I hear a rim shot? Sorry, I’m channeling Henny Youngman. But I digress. If you’re reading this, there’s a very good chance you’re passionate about cars, and especially our favorite marque. Now, let’s take a deep breath and all look inward … to answer the question of why. So why are we all such knuckleheads for all things automotive? To me, the answer is that it’s a deceptively simple combination of genes and environment. Here’s my story. I very dimly recall living in East Orange, NJ, at age two or three, and being taken down the road to watch them build, of all things, the Garden State Parkway. I was absolutely fascinated. No, I was actually imprinted by the experience. I don’t know how else to explain it. And my father fed the passion – he would give me boxes, that housed cathode ray tubes. I’d throw away the tubes and I’d push the boxes around, endlessly, making believe they were cars. A few years later, my parents built me a sandbox. What did I do with it? I built roads. I had the bug. And I still do. And I probably will, long after I can safely steer a buggy down the street. In other words, it’s in my DNA, but it took the Garden State Parkway and my father’s tube boxes to bring it out. How about you? Can you point to a seminal experience that opened your eyes, and ears, and all your senses, to a passion? If you can, I bet it probably changed and directed your life. Now, I think this can be a very telling way to explain what’s happening to the car universe that’s evolving all around us. For example, I’ve been mystified by the explosion in popularity of SUVs over the past 10+ years, and how manufacturers are feeding the beast with bigger, badder, heavier, thirstier, higher-riding vehicles. That are being gobbled up by the consuming public, in the US and around the world. And electrification looks to take the trend that much farther, adding a few thousand pounds of road-hugging battery weight, with … oh wait, now I guess it’s ok … electrified efficiency. If you can find a charger, and have the spare time to wait for the damn thing to charge. Why? Is it actually fun to wheel around these giant blobs? But then I think back to my youth, to the age of the station wagon. Ponder this – they had about the same effective space utilization as today’s | 52 |

three-row SUVs. And they probably weighed about the same. The only differences? They rode lower to the road. And they only had rear wheel drive. Oh, and the third-row seat actually faced backward. Here's a revelation. They were bought by the parents and grandparents of the people who buy today’s earth-shakers. Now, with all due respect, these people were, and are, not enthusiasts. They didn’t have the passion then, and they don’t today. Their vehicle of choice was and is transportation, rational and practical transportation. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, as Porsche lunatic Jerry Seinfeld would say. A sports car, on the other hand, is not rational transportation. It has always been the essence of passion, passion for the road, for the driving experience, for how you get there. Which is why it’s not for everybody. Although sometimes it may look like it. We’ve all met the wannabees. The people who were always admiring from afar, and finally took the plunge … only to find the ride too harsh, the seats to snug, the rear seats too small. These people jumped in, and they soon jumped out. Helping the resale market for us enthusiasts. But that’s another story. That leaves us, the few, the proud, the passionate ones. Here's to passion. It’s far from an ordinary word, or thing. It’s a driving life force. I just wonder what Graham Parker is driving today.

BRAKES BASICS TechTime with PORSCHE Scott M - Porsche Brakes, The Basics By Scott McIlvain

P

orsche is famous for handling, speed, and great looks. One thing that is overlooked is how good most Porsches brakes are off the showroom floor. Porsche engineers their brakes to match and most time exceed the performance of the car. So how does the brake system work on a Porsche? The basics haven’t change over the years. When you push down on the brake pedal you are pushing on a hydraulic piston called the master cylinder. This piston then applies pressure to the brake lines that are filled with brake fluid. Because fluid cannot be compressed the pressure is then transferred through the fluid to the brake caliper, which moves the brake pad or shoes against the rotor or drum, causing friction. This friction converts the car’s forward energy into heat. Most Porsches, whether new or old, use a brake system called “disc brakes.” This system uses a rotor that rotates with the wheel and moves through a brake caliper. As the master cylinder (connected to the brake pedal) is pushed, the brake fluid then pushes against one or more caliper pistons. These pistons then push against the brake pads, which contact the rotor which slows the car down. The harder the master cylinder is pushed, the harder the pistons push against the brake pads and more friction is made. Early Porsches used a drum brake setup where two brake shoes push against a drum that is connected to the wheels. The benefit of disc brakes is that the rotor dissipates heat much better and are so they are more efficient.

Most every Porsche uses what is called a fixed brake caliper. There are one or more pistons on each side of the caliper. This means that there is equal force on each brake pad (two pads per caliper). A fixed caliper is a high performance component that offers the best possible braking. The other type of brake caliper you mostly see on non-performance cars is called a floating caliper. This caliper has one large piston. When the master cylinder is pushed the one piston pushes against the inside pad and the caliper then moves, causing the outside pad to push against the rotor. Fixed calipers are superior because they are stronger and supply even pressure to the pads.

| 56 |

One of the most crucial parts to the brake system is the brake fluid that transmits the force from the master cylinder to the brake calipers. This hydraulic fluid is not easily compressed, so it is great at transmitting force. One of the problems with brake fluid is that it pulls water out of the air. This water then is absorbed into the fluid. When the brake pads and rotors are making heat, some is transferred into the caliper and into the fluid. If the fluid is too hot, the water inside the fluid will boil and release gas. This gas is easily compressible, so the brake pedal will be soft and the person driving will have to push the pedal more to get the brakes to operate. This is why it is important to have the brake fluid flushed every two years. One of the major problems I get calls about regarding brakes is noise. Newer high performance Porsche brakes are huge! They are designed to scrub off as much speed as possible over and over again. When these cars are driven on the street the brake pads won’t get up to temperature and will glaze the rotor, causing a squeak noise with light brake application. If you are having a problem with squeaky brakes try to get on the brakes aggressively a few times to get some heat into the pad. Make sure the brake system is in working order before trying this. Most newer Porsches come with anti-rattle backing plates which help with the noise.

through a loop of wire. This loop of wire is placed inside of the brake pad. When the pad wears down this wire is cut and the car does not sense the return voltage and turns on the light. Please feel free to email me any questions or ideas for future tech articles at scott@mcilvainmotors.com. Next article we will discuss brake upgrades, ABS /PSM and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes.

One other problem that happens is that the brake wear sensor light might come on. This means the brake pads are worn and need to be replaced. The car knows that the pads are worn because of the wear sensors. The car sends a little electricity

Stuttgart Market Letter Written by David K. Whitlock

Despite having an above-average number of Porsches offered in October, the market showed below-average results, with a sell-through rate of 68% being the second lowest we’ve seen all year. And a total dollar volume of $32,215,159, which was higher than the previous month thanks to a strong RS market, even though fewer cars found homes. At the tip-top of the market, we saw a Gunther Werks modified 911 and a 911 Reimagined by Singer fail to sell at high bids of $1,150,000 and $955,000, respectively. But the $300-500,000 market performed spectacularly, with two new 992 GT3 RS examples becoming the first to sell at an average of $450,000. The previous generation of GT3 RS cars also showed decent gains after a softer September, with two examples selling at above-average prices of $262,000 and $253,500. 911 RS cars weren’t the only Rennsports to look strong either, as Porsche’s 718 Cayman GT4 RS Weissach prices looked a tad bit stronger since August. All three examples offered found homes with our top lot selling for $247,000. Regular 718 GT4s, on the other hand, looked much softer, with two cars selling for $115,000 and $122,000 and a third failing to sell at a high bid of $113,500. 718 Spyders appeared flat month over month with sales below $120k, which was similar to what we saw in September after a solid August. Manual 964 Coupes continued to perform, with most cars selling over $100,000 and a lightly modified example fetching a very strong $163,991. 993 Coupes, on the other hand, appeared to remain flat with all sales, save for one, hammering down just below $100,000. And then there’s the manual 996 Coupes, which continues to show lower highs and a dropping average price month after month. Speaking of Coupes, 356C Coupes struggled to sell, with only one example out of four finding a home for $94,500. The rest of the bids we saw weren’t even close. However, we saw two 356B Coupes sell at $125,000 (about average for a T5) and a T6 GS/GT Tribute at $110,000. The star of the 356 Market was a 1962 356B 1600S Twin Grill Roadster that sold for $295,000, the best we’ve seen since 2019. Turbocharged 911s were a mixed bag with water-cooled cars and 930s looking soft, with the 964 and 993s still performing well. 996 Turbos saw the average continue to fall despite two strong sales and only one 997 Turbo Coupe 6speed selling for over $100,000. The vast majority of 930 Turbos looked somewhat softer after being flat for the last twelve months, with a solitary 3.3-liter 964 Turbo selling, which pushed the average up at a final bid of $239,000. 993 Turbos continue to make gains with strong sales over $250,000, and our top sale of the month, a 1997 911 Turbo S, selling for an above-average $550,000. Other strong sales included a $50,000 1989 944 Turbo, a 2023 911 Dakar that sold for $405,000, a 2019 911 Speedster at $395,000, and a 2011 911 GT3 RS that brought $291,000. While “normal” Porsche models seem to either be flat or softening, the best examples and limited editions are still creeping upward.

AZPCA Drive Review : Valley View Dinner Drive STORY BY Christine Menard

This outstanding drive went without a hitch. We thank Rook and Debbie for all their hard work in organizing

this outing and driving it themselves ahead of time so that the driving instructions were super clear and easy to follow. We also want to thank the drivers who led the groups and the sweeps who followed to keep us safe and worry free. Normally the Porsche Club of America, Arizona Region has outings beginning in the morning. But this time we headed out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM with the sun shining, clear skies and 84-degree weather. HEAVENLY! We left from The Coffee Plantation in 2 groups of 17 cars each leaving 15 minutes apart and headed to Camelback Mountain. Driving through the Biltmore Estates was like driving through Malibu or the Loire Valley Castles in France. The homes, their grounds and gardens were magnificent. Multimillion-dollar mansions that took your breath away. There is no point in including pictures as every home was incredible. There were so many architecturally amazing places. Our drive continued onto North Galvin Parkway up onto Camelback. Again, we gawked at the beautiful homes. The view from up there was magnificent as we could see far out into the Valley. I never realized how green the valley is. We stopped for a bio break at Legacy Village Target. There was much chatter and it seemed everyone had plenty of positive things to share about the beauty of what they had seen. Onwards to Dobbins Lookout. The drive was fun with lots of curves and turns. We thought the view from Camelback was special but the view from Dobbins Lookout truly highlighted the beauty of the Valley of the Sun. You could see it ALL, Phoenix, its many suburbs and its surrounding cities, towns, and villages. It was a marvel and everyone took many pictures of the scenery and the group. The drive down from the over 2200-foot peak was equally fun. On to our last stop. Rustler’s Rooste, a restaurant in a beautiful community near Pointe Parkway West with a gorgeous fountain as its centerpiece. Yet again, the group was treated to an amazing view. We sat outside on the patio, enjoying the view while we dined on a cowboy barbecue of brisket and roast chicken, salad, beans, corn-on-the-cob and beverages of our choice. Everyone raved about the day and how lucky we were to have such wonderful volunteers to arrange and execute these genuinely great outings. Ray and I cannot wait until December the 10th when we drive to Prescott to see the Christmas Lights!

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA! Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies. For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out. Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set. While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way. How is a typical HPDE day structured? A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps. The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced. | 60 |

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending. What do you need to bring? Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that) We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event. Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet. There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs. Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

Auto-X 2023/24 Veteran’s Day Autocross PROVIDED BY RICK ALTHOUSE & KIM KEMPER

Hey Autocrossers ,

Here are the results from the November Veteran›s Day Autocross. The 1st file is all of the raw times along with the number of cones hit. There is a 2 second penalty for each cone. The 2nd file is the Top Time of Day, with everyone’s best run sorted from the fastest to the slowest. Congratulations to Jonathan B for setting the TTOD! At the driver›s meeting, we called for special recognition and appreciation of all of our Veterans. Robert T (also a vet) presented tokens to them on behalf of his company. We were also treated to a rare Saturday morning Sound (and sight) of Freedom as F-35s were taking off and flying in formation throughout the day. We had a great course design from Kim for this event, this course had us running clockwise and featured a loop. Thanks to Bill P, Dane T, and Chris M for helping Kim set up the course on Friday morning. We were sold out early, had a wait list established and backfilled positions a number of times, but last-minute cancellations on Friday night really put a strain on us as we had to shuffle work assignments for adequate coverage. Please try to give us advance notice if you need to cancel. Although on the chilly side in the morning, the temperature was about perfect by early afternoon, great weather, good food provided by Pat the Hot Dog Lady, a great facility and exceptional cars and friends made for a fantastic event. As always, thanks to all for helping set up and taking down and stowing the equipment and cones at the end of the day! We do need your continued support to keep these events successful. We hope to see everyone again on December 9. Rick and Kim

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

PCA AZ Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities Event Cancellation Policy Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events. Event Organizer Responsibilities Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language: Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly. If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.
