PRESIDENT’S CORNER
T
his is my first report as incoming President of the PCA, Arizona Region. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” to quote Charles Dickens. There have been many challenges for all of us which have impacted how we function as a club and in our personal lives. This has resulted in the suspension of most or all of our club events over the past 9 months and only recently have we started the driving events again (AutoX, DE and Driving Tours) following PCA National’s COVID-19 guidelines, along with the Arizona state guidelines. We still have not resumed in-person social events such as Monthly Meetings, the Holiday Party etc. It is still not certain when the in-person social events will resume but with the recent commencement of vaccine inoculations, we may see the light at the end of the tunnel soon. In the mean time, we will continue our online Monthly Meetings on the first Wednesday of each month. starting January 6, 2021. I hope you all will join us then. I just hosted the Charity Drive to Bartlett Lake on December 19th. We had 40 cars participate and we raised a total of $4,575, that was donated to St Mary’s Food Bank. Their statistics indicate that our donation will provide 32,025 meals for the needy, which is remarkable. I dropped the check off at the St Mary’s headquarters and saw a lineup of cars, approximately 75 cars long, waiting to pick up food. Thanks to all that participated and contributed. Here is the link to photos taken: https://www.azpcaphotos.com/Driving-Tours/Charity-Drive-to-Bartlett-Lake-2020/. I plan to run two charity events a year going forward (one just before Easter, and one just before Thanksgiving). I hope to see you at those events. Our club has the great honor of hosting Treffen from May 5 to May 9, 2021. Rook Younger and his committee have been hard at work preparing for the event. The host hotel is the iconic Camelback Inn. This is going to be an amazing event for our region to welcome PCA members from all over North America. “Experience four days of driving, dining, and exploring” in the Valley of the Sun and Central Arizona. Plans include driving tours to Sedona, Prescott, Mingus Mountain/Jerome, as well as to Bartlett Lake, Fountain Hills, and South Mountain/Wrigley Mansion. Be sure to sign up. Registration starts on February 24th at 3 p.m. It apparently sells out quickly. Here is the link: https://treffen.pca.org/. The link for the Camelback Inn is: https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/phxcb-jw-marriott-scottsdale-camelbackinn-resort-and-spa/ Our club is always in need of volunteers to organize and help with events. If you would like to help please reach out to me at: president@az.pca.org. We are currently looking for a new Sponsorship chair. I hope to see you soon at an event or online meeting. Mark

ew year, new look for our Going Places cover! Hope you like the new design. All the credit and kudos go to Claudia Stiglic, Corporate Marketing Manager at Porsche Chandler, for offering their services to update the look of our cover and to Joshua Lanphear, Graphic Designer, for the design work. Thank you! With the Covid vaccine being distributed, just maybe, we will be able to start planning for Porsche and Pancakes, New Members’ Day, etc. and other outside group events. As Mark B. mentioned, we have been fortunate to have Autocross, DE and Driving events back on the calendar. Don’t procrastinate, sign up right away when you decide to join an event because they do fill up quickly! Keep an eye on our club website calendar for up to the minute event information. This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Richard Andrade for “La Posada-Petrified Forest Weekend Tour.” Thanks Jim for the great article and pictures. He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to write me articles and taking pictures at our AZPCA events. Without your stories and articles, it would be pretty difficult to publish our monthly newsletter. Check out Jim Bultema’s new monthly feature, “Spotless...” and send him your car cleaning tips. Looking forward to a new year with lots of fun AZPCA events! Angela

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Going Places Editor, I would like to introduce featured member, Steven Moldin.
University of Southern California, to help faculty get federal grant funding. In the past, I worked at the National Institutes of Health and did research at Washington University in St. Louis and Columbia University.
I’m a VERY enthusiastic Porsche owner, who has attended numerous Porsche events at the Southern California performance center and numerous (BMW) training courses at the Nürburgring and other driving venues in Europe.
6. What makes your car special?
1. When did you join PCA?

I joined PCA in November 2009.
2. What Porsche(s) do you have? 2009 911 (997.2) Carrera 4s.

New Bedford, Massachusetts. Melville’s Moby Dick was based here and it was the whaling capital and one of the wealthiest cities in the US during the 1840’s - 1850’s. I’ve also lived in Boston, NYC, St Louis, DC, and Malibu.
4. Family?
2 beautiful daughters who both went to the University of Southern California (USC). My oldest has worked in publicity at NBC Universal and 20th Century Fox. Just a Porsche warning triangle and first aid kit. I’m legal for the Autobahn.

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?
For performance and handling, there is nothing better than a German engineered car. Porsche is the best German engineered car.
11. High school nickname? ’The shrink’
12. Top 3 cars you would own?

Autocross #4 Results
by Rick Althouse and Kim Kemper, Autocross Chairs photos by Eric Schmidt
H
ey Motorsport Enthusiasts,
Here are the results from our December 12, 2020 Autocross. One chart shows all the runs that were made that day with the other showing Top Time of Day for both cars with street tires and race tires, which represents that person’s quickest run for the day. Despite a very chilly start in the morning, the temps improved during the day with a full dose of Arizona sun. Top Time of Day on street tires went to Jonathan B. driving an AMG Mercedes and Top Time of Day race tires went to Ken M. driving a Corvette. We had a large group of 38 cars with a couple of folks who had been away from autocrossing for a while, welcome back. Pat the Hot Dog Lady served her usual delicious hot dog lunch in a COVID safe manner and offered candy canes for those with a sweet tooth. We want to thank everyone that helped with set up and tear down to make the event run smooth. The AZPCA autox program continues during the winter, our next event is January 30th. Wanna have a Blast? Come on out! Sincerely, Rick and Kim AZPCA A-X #4, December 12, 2020 DRIVER James F

oy was I surprised, when I received the email below regarding my old Porsche Turbo! Talk about a small world… From: «Nott, Michael» Date: December 14, 2020 at 3:21:30 PM MST To: KIM KEMPER Subject: RE: Dec run/work information
Kim, You won’t believe it but it IS your old car. Some work was done since on it at CBI in Charlotte. The story goes as I have researched, I do not have names but it was yours, Sold to guy who kept it a couple years, traded it in on an EV-SUV Lincoln. Sanderson Ford had it on their lot, auctioned it, went to 2 car lots in Scottsdale, one in Tucson then to CBI in Charlotte, NC. I know the guys from racing the east coast. They knew I was looking for one, called me and said it is the exact car I wanted and had all suspension work done. I bought it sight unseen and shipped it back to Phoenix. I took it to my first DE at AMP I went through tech and sound. When we went to put the PASS sticker on the door one was already there. I was sure the car came from here at that moment. Small world. Here are some shots, sorry they are only of my car. Don’t’ mind using the ones of her bleeding, it’s part of racing. Josh sent me some also that he took. Talk soon, had a great time. Spotless...
by Jim Bultema, Director At Large How to Properly Clean Wheels and Rims
I
t seems simple enough, a little water, some type of wheel cleaner, spray it on, spray it off, and presto—beautiful wheels…or perhaps something that is just average. With today’s fancier and more upscale wheels, it’s more important than ever to use the right materials, brushes, and techniques to get it Spotless. Step 1 - Prepare Your Supplies As the saying goes, the right tool for the right job. You want to gather the correct supplies understanding some wheels are made of unique materials and may require different tools. I’m providing the supplies that are appropriate for most wheels. A dedicated wash bucket is a must, so you ensure that the brake junk that comes off your wheels stays off your car’s finish. I would also recommend a microfiber wash mitt, a scratch proof soft bristle wheel brush and a non-acidic wheel cleaner spray. For non-ceramic coated wheels, a degreasing or wax-stripping automotive shampoo. For ceramic coated wheels use a pH neutral, wax-free automotive shampoo. With these dedicated supplies ready—so are you. Step 2 – Spraying Your Wheels with Water Ideally, if you have a high-pressure washer you have the perfect tool. These puppies are the best at loosening baked on contaminants and getting rid of the brake dust. If you don’t have one, purchase a special spray nozzle which turns your hose into something resembling its big brother. Step 3 – Spray Wheel Cleaner on Each Wheel I know, you hate reading instructions and rather just go for it. But when dealing with wheel cleaners, the instructions are the gospel, and you should abide by them. Some formulations are simple spray, let sit, and rinse off. Others require agitation with a wheel cleaning brush. So, make a change in your life and Read the Instructions! Step 4 – Wash Wheels with Automotive Soap or Shampoo While most cleaning chemicals boast how “safe” they are for your wheels, it’s important to do a thorough rinse.
18
If left on your chrome or alloy wheels they can cause damage. Please read Step 1 again for the type of cleaner you should use for the type of wheels you have. Step 5 – Rinse Completely and Wash Your Vehicle Completely When you’ve competed the steps above, rinse the wheels being careful to get inside the wheel well along with the outside and inside of the wheels. Carefully check around the car for chemical splashes that may have gotten on your suspension, brake parts, or even the paint on the body. With your wheels Spotless, you are ready to wash your Porsche. One final hint: Applying a DIY nano ceramic coating on your wheels makes clean-up on the next go around that much simpler. This application will reduce the potential for brake dust sticking to the rims, which reduces the need for harmful chemical cleaners later. Please send me your tips and suggestions (monthlymeetings@az.pca.org) for any aspect of cleaning your Porsche so I can share it with our membership. Thank you to Avalon King for their cleaning tips.

La Posada-Petrified Forest Weekend Tour by Richard Andrade photos by Richard Andrade
T
he AZPCA RegionTouring events are a great way to enjoy our Porsches and meet fellow club members. The number of participants for these events is limited, so be sure to register early. I would like to thank Rook and Debbie Younger and Bob Bandera for organizing this trip. It is a huge logistical task to make the arrangements and keep everyone on track. We are a volunteer organization, so everyone needs to contribute when possible. The route to Winslow was north on Arizona State Route 87. The highway views for participants and surprised nonparticipants are exciting. We regrouped at the Mazatal Casino located just south of Payson. We then drove a few more miles north and had a very tasty lunch at the Pinewood Tavern in Pine, Arizona. The final stop of the drive was the La Posada Hotel in Winslow, Arizona. Welcome to the La Posada Hotel. I overheard some hotel guests say “those Porsche people have taken over” and looking at the hotel parking lot I can say it looked that way. Saturday morning we had the drivers’ meeting. A group this size needs to be well coordinated. The registration was 43 attendees with their 22 cars. All the participants were practicing good mask etiquette.
The trip organizer, Bob Bandera, addressed the group while AZPCA social media guru, Jan Mackulak, live streamed for those who couldn’t attend.

Our route from Winslow was east on I-40 exiting at Holbrook. We follow all traffic rules and regulations while on PCA drives. Our organizers do a great job but we still had to stop for rail traffic. The dinosaurs enjoyed the view of all the Porsches. We entered the Petrified Forest National Park from the south. Everyone was free to follow their own agenda. The park offers scenic overlooks and many trails for hiking. According to Wikipedia, the park is named for its large deposits of petrified wood. The park covers about 346 square miles (900 square kilometers), encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe, as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The park’s headquarters is about 26 miles (42 km) east of Holbrook along Interstate 40 (I-40). The site, the northern part of which extends into the Painted Desert, was declared a national monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. The park received 644,922 recreational visitors in 2018. Our first stop was the Rainbow Forest Museum. The park website explains that the Rainbow Forest was the heart of the original Petrified Forest set aside by President Roosevelt as a national monument in 1906. The building of Rainbow Forest Visitor Center, pictured above, occurred from June through December 1931. After visiting the museum we exited to the loop trail, where all kinds of petrified wood were seen. This petrified log had an interesting background. A Porsche o w n e r ’s eye behind a camera often sees images slightly d i ff e r e n t from the average tourist.
This is nearly an entire tree that fell millions of years ago, was petrified and only to be exposed by erosion. From the Rainbow Forest Museum we next stopped at the Crystal Forest. Crystal Forest was named for crystals in the petrified wood.

La Posada-Petrified Forest Weekend Tour (continued from page 21) The paved loop trail is a .7 mile/1.2 km trail and has small elevation changes so it is an easy hike. Nice looking Porsches were part of the landscape. This tree (below) fell and was petrified. Later, when the soil eroded the petrified log cracked open. This is a wide angle view of the Crystal Forest loop trail. What look like small boulders in this photo are large petrified logs that are scattered around the whole area.
Our next stop was the Blue Mesa. The stripes reveal the different sediment layers that were exposed by erosion. There are picnic tables and trails at the Blue Mesa stop.
22
Our next stop was Newspaper Rock. The park website states, “The archeological site known as Newspaper Rock is neither a newspaper nor a single rock.” The site boasts over 650 petroglyphs covering a group of rock faces within a small area. High concentrations of petroglyphs like this mark a place as hugely significant. Many generations of people saw these markings and contributed their own. The petroglyphs were created by ancestral Pueblo people living, farming, and hunting along the Puerco River between 650 and 2,000 years ago. Some of the ancient artists may have lived at Puerco Pueblo, located less than one mile north of this site. Just north of I-40 the Painted Desert came into view. The vast expanses are difficult to capture in photos. This panorama from one of the stops provides a colorful view.
Wikipedia explains that much of the Painted Desert, within Petrified Forest National Park, is protected as Petrified Forest National Wilderness Area. The desert is composed of stratified layers of easily erodible siltstone, mudstone, and shale of the Triassic Chinle Formation. These fine grained rock layers contain abundant iron and manganese compounds which provide the pigments for the various colors of the region. Following our very enjoyable tour of the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert, we returned to the La Posada Hotel. We had no group activities planned, but a few members enjoyed socializing outdoors in the rear garden of the hotel. When we’re not behind the wheel, we enjoy sharing time with fellow club members in these wonderful locations. The original agenda for Sunday included a group visit to the Meteor Crater. However, before the event date the visitor center was closed due to the COVID-19 situation so the visit was removed from our tour. For those who haven’t seen the crater, I’m providing a photo that I took from a private flight over the area.

La Posada-Petrified Forest Weekend Tour (continued from page 23) Sunday was officially “a free day” so everyone chose their preferred return route. Our organizers provided a list of alternative activities. We decided to see some sights that would be new to us. We drove I-40 west towards Flagstaff to visit the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and the Wupatki National Monument. They are located to the north east of Flagstaff. The San Francisco Peaks are a volcanic mountain range located just north of Flagstaff. Humphreys Peak, the highest summit in the range, is the highest point in the state of Arizona at 12,633 ft./3,851 m.
This was the view of the Sunset Crater from ground Level. Sunset Crater is the youngest in a string of volcanoes (the San Francisco volcanic field) that is related to the nearby San Francisco Peaks. The date of the eruptions that formed the 1,120 ft./ 340 m high cone is estimated at AD 1064–1065.
This is an aerial view of Sunset Crater taken eight days later on a flight over the area. The crater is more visible from this perspective.
24
Wupatki National Monument The monument’s website describes it as nestled between the Painted Desert and ponderosa highlands of northern Arizona, Wupatki is a landscape of legacies. Ancient pueblos dot red-rock outcroppings across miles of prairie. Where food and water seem impossible to find, people built pueblos, raised families, farmed, traded, and thrived. Today, if you linger and listen, earth and artifacts whisper their stories to us still. There is a loop road from the Sunset Crater that passes several pueblos, I’ve included the Wukoki and Wupatiki pueblos which are the best preserved of the several visible from the loop road. Wukoki means “big house” in Hopi. The original grandeur of Wukoki is still evident. There were three stories in what seems to be a tower. A total of six of seven rooms may have been home to two or three families. The open area adjacent to the tower was a plaza used for daily activities, pottery making, basket weaving, and other chores. The plaza was enclosed by a semicircular parapet wall. The many settlement sites scattered throughout the monument were built by the Ancient Pueblo People, more specifically the Cohonina, Kayenta, Anasazi, and Sinagua. Wupatki was first inhabited around 500 AD. Wupatki, which means “Tall House” in the Hopi language, is a multistory Sinagua pueblo dwelling comprising over 100 rooms and a community room and the northernmost ball court ever discovered in North America, creating the largest building site for nearly 50 miles
The Wupataki remains are spectacular. A major population influx began soon after the eruption of Sunset Crater in the 11th century (between 1040 and 1100), which blanketed the area with volcanic ash, improving agricultural productivity and the soil’s ability to retain water. By 1182, approximately 85 to 100 people lived at Wupatki Pueblo, but by 1225, the site was permanently abandoned. Betsy and I had a wonderful weekend exploring new sites and enjoyed the Porsche comraderie. Looking forward to more driving tours.

Holiday Charity Drive Raises Over $4,500 by Brian Miller photos by Mark Baker
T
he Holidays mean something different to everyone. While this year’s holiday season might be a bit different, we can still take a moment to give back and make the world a better place. St. Mary’s Food Bank has been feeding those in need since 1967. Today, St. Mary’s Food Bank is one of the largest food banks in the United States, and continues to make an impact feeding hungry families in Arizona. Porsches and their owners gathered at the Coffee Plantation near Scottsdale and Shea, the official starting point of the PCA-Arizona Holiday charity drive. We fueled-up on warm beverages and admired the cars, while waiting to sign waivers and receive driving route directions from Debbie Younger and Jeanne Snyder. Everyone was practicing safe, social distancing by following the PCA National guidelines along with the Arizona state guidelines, which provided everyone with the opportunity to wander through the beautiful Porsches on display. Jennifer Harrenstein really made it feel like Christmas by putting out cookies for all to enjoy. Those cookies were so good I may have filled my belly like Santa Claus himself. Soon the parking lot was full of shiny sleighs from Stuttgart, including vintage air-cooled 356 and 911 models through the latest and greatest liquid-cooled 911 Carrera, Boxster, and Cayman models, as well as a little of everything in-between. An early candy colored Conda Green 911 rolled in under the steady hands of Bill Richardson while Jack and Loretta Aman chose the comforts of a late model car with real heat (who can blame them?). Keen eyes may have spotted several 911 Turbo models as well as a Porsche GT4 and a Boxster Spyder or two. When not flying jets and helicopters, Tom Frazier pilots a Boxster S with a Fabspeed exhaust system that sounds like it is capable of Mach 1. It may not be stamped, “Made in Germany,” but Dave Fisher made an entrance in his stunning 1967 Mustang resto-mod with all eyes turning to see who was behind the wheel of the show-stopping machine. Club President-elect, Mark Baker, held an impromptu driver’s meeting explaining we would be making the drive in two groups and would all meet-up at Bartlett Lake for a photo opportunity. He noted this gathering was meant to be a relaxed Holiday drive for charity and a not a speed event (always a good reminder). Mark explained he would lead group one with Larry Grimes acting as sweep followed about 15 minutes later by group two leader, Bob Woodwell with Rook and Debbie Younger providing sweep duties in their super-fast Cayman. I was assigned to group two. Having an older, air-cooled, carbureted, 911 Targa known to leak a few drops of oil I decided to hang towards the back of the group. This proved to be a blast, as I could watch Germany’s finest rolling on the road ahead of me for at least a mile.
26
Departing from the Coffee Plantation, it would be easy to skip over the drive up Scottsdale Road as the stop-and-go traffic may not be that exciting for us, but I could see the look of joy and amazement on other driver’s faces, especially oncoming traffic as they witnessed Porsche after Porsche going by them for miles and miles. Sitting at a stoplight enjoying Holiday music playing through the ancient dash speaker of my 911 I noticed a young driver in an Alfa Romeo 4C. He had his window down and was looking a bit shocked when the light turned green and a colorful parade of Porsches rolled by him (maybe he’ll trade that Alfa in on a Porsche and join the club). Once north of the 101 and heading into the Pinnacle Peak area the drive shifts away from the main thoroughfares onto scenic roads in the foothills with breathtaking views. Credit goes to Rook and Mark for planning a nice route that showed off the natural beauty of Scottsdale while winding us up towards Carefree where there was a planned pull-off for cars to regroup before the final run to Bartlett Lake. This was a very well planned and organized drive. As our group made its way onto Bartlett Dam Road most drivers spread out to allow for a spirited run through the twisty sections (some more spirited than others).
Carving canyons in an early 911 Targa on a sunny day is a pure joy. Especially when you can hear and see Stuttgart’s greatest hits on the road ahead of and behind you. I stopped to allow a few horses and riders to cross the road, which then gave me the excuse to push a bit harder to catch-up to the group ahead. Great fun! Pulling into the Bartlett Lake boat launch parking lot, Mark Baker had graciously arranged a photo opportunity overlooking the lake. There was professional photo gear setup allowing each car to drive up and get a photo taken before parking. The lot filled with Porsches brought enthusiastic honks and waves from motorcyclists, as well as people towing their watercraft down to the launch. They had the boats but the Porsches made the biggest splash. This was a terrific event with over 40 Porsches in attendance and a whole lot of fun. The best part of the day was the spirit of giving among PCA Arizona members. The Holiday charity drive raised approximately $4600.00 for St. Mary’s Food Bank. Check out photos from this event available at:
https://www.azpcaphotos.com/Driving-Tours/Charity-Drive-to-Bartlett-Lake-2020/
Editor’s Note: Photo below of Mark Baker at St Mary’s Food Bank giving Rebecca Utech of St Mary’s a check for $4,575. This donation will provide 32,025 meals.

HPDE at Arizona Motorsports Park by Dan Bouet, Driver Education Chair photos by Bruce Houser
A
Sunday drive anyone?
AZPCA hosted a fun-filled HPDE track day on Sunday, December 13th at Arizona Motorsports Park. The weather was quite brisk in the morning, but gave way to a beautiful, cool sunny Arizona day-the best kind of day to spend out at the track! There were several first time track participants in attendance, we always love to see members take the plunge and try their hand at their first HPDE! Once again, drivers in the beginner/novice group were all paired up with their own personal driving instructors, a 1:1 ratio of student/instructor. Communication was done via a Bluetooth radio headset so that the instructor and student could discuss anything necessary while navigating the track and exploring the limits of the driver and car. There were additionally three other groups out on the track: Intermediate, Experienced, and Advanced groups. Those groups were very popular as well, keeping the action on the track entertaining to both watch and drive. The track is normally driven in the clockwise fashion, however, for this event, the track was set up to drive it counter-clockwise. We received lots of great feedback from the drivers, it seems to be a nice change of pace, so we’ll continue to arrange the counter-clockwise direction at least once each season. Our next HPDE is scheduled on Saturday, January 16th. It will be held again at Arizona Motorsport Park, but this time we’ll be running it in the traditional clockwise configuration. We hope to see you out there!
When do I get to go for a ride?

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region
CRANSWICK ON PORSCHE-A modern interpretation of the Porsche story
CRANSWICK ON PORSCHE a modern interpretation of the Porsche story by Marc Cranswick, published February 2020 by Veloce Publishing, UK
A
mazon Books lists “over 6000” results for a search of “Porsche Book” one wonders who would ever want to read, let alone write, another Porsche Book. Turns out that Marc Cranswick is a prolific writer of books on cars, Cranswick seems to be a writing enthusiast rather than a Porsche enthusiast. His previous 11 ‘car’ books are all about different makes. As Porsches can get into the blood of a driver (or mechanic), I guess cars can get into the blood of an author. This book is thorough, quite detailed and well researched (125 different sources are referenced in the text), and there are reprints of pages from contemporary publications (mostly British). Very comprehensive with specification and production details woven into the text and many quotations from a multitude of contemporary British and American publications. Racing and sales performances, and the evolution of engine, chassis and interior design are all covered in great detail, in addition to the technical specifications. The Anglo-American sourcing sometimes results in comparisons between English and Metric specified vehicles. Though there are some rough spots where the nittygritty details don’t seem to read quite right, for someone willing to wade through the narrative, this is a great resource for detailed information about the older cars – though race results are mentioned through 2017, the detailed discussion stops with the end of the 993. Basically, despite the ‘modern’ in the title this book covers Porsches more than 20 years old. The advent of the 996 water-cooled 911 is addressed (dismissed ?) with a quote from Autocar: “...a truly exceptional sports car has become a grand tourer”.
34
CRANSWICK ON PORSCHE has eight chapters, basically covering the evolutionary steps from 356 through 993, with detours through race cars and turbos. Mention of the front-engine water-pumpers is made when appropriate. A nice touch is printing the chapter number and name at the top of each right-hand page. There is an apparently comprehensive index, but I could not find a magnifying glass with which to read it. Eight Appendices provide additional information on Porsche-Audi Relationship, Porsche Art, VWPorsche Specials, etc. The book is profusely illustrated with 303 well captioned pictures in 240 pages. Some pictures are familiar icons, e.g. the picture of Ferry sitting on the hood of a 356B; most are unfamiliar to this reviewer. Cranswick’s writing is somewhat flippant and colloquial, compared to that of most books for the Porschephile. Perhaps this casual tone would make this book more palatable to the reader, who has only a casual interest in the history of what might now be called ‘the early Porsches’. Somewhat unique to this book is the mention of the various, nonracing movies in which Porsches, even 356s and 914s, have had significant appearances. There are even citations of TV show episodes that include 911s. CRANSWICK ON PORSCHE is hard bound, with photograph cover and ‘arty’ pictures on the end papers. There are 240, 8 x 10 inch heavyweight, semi-gloss pages which show the pictures well. All in all, a quality publication of a highly readable narration containing a wealth of detailed information. It should be available for $55.00 from your favorite book seller, or from Amazon.com.
