e are still in limbo because of Covid-19 restrictions. Unfortunately, due to what I believe are premature slackening of restrictions, we are now experiencing even bigger infection rates than a few months ago, in fact, we are one of the highest in the country. I had planned to raft the Grand Canyon with friends but the consensus of my group was that it would be impossible to prevent infection on the raft for 7 days if someone showed up asymptomatic so we have postponed the trip to next year. Please continue to be careful and follow CDC recommendations. Hopefully, we will get through this. We are tentatively beginning to plan some events, putting in place the best advice we can get on running them safely, meeting state and federal guidelines. The Board decided to cancel the Alpine event as a PCA event since we felt there were too many factors that made it difficult to organize and run this overnight trip safely. I believe some people kept their reservations and stayed at the Lodge. There are events appearing on our calendar so keep an eye out. We have now had two successful monthly virtual meetings. The last one had two speakers who spoke on topics of interest to many of our members. Peter Zawadzki from Hagerty described their Porsche specific Drive Share Program and Jim Resnick, a local member and automotive writer, spoke about his recent Porsche Panorama article and some future articles. It is my intention to continue to seek interesting speakers for our meetings, even after we are able to meet live. You should see a motorsportreg signup for our next meeting. Please join us. PCA National has issued a Communicable Disease Waiver to be signed in addition to our normal event waiver. To make this simpler, they have approved a way to sign waivers through Motorsportreg. Once you sign up for an event, you will get a text message sent to your phone to sign. It will take your picture through your phone to verify it is you signing. We have been hoping National would provide an electronic way to complete waivers and, although I expect there will be some glitches, this looks like a promising way to meet our insurance requirements. Please watch for this with future events. Well, it is official! We will be hosting Treffen in the spring of 2021. Rook Younger has enthusiastically taken on organization of the event for our region and he has already made great progress. You will be hearing more details soon. With Rook’s guidance and ideas, I am sure this will be one of the best Treffens and set a high bar for future events. ‘Nuff said. Drive safely!

ooking good for seeing some baseball this season, even if it will only be televised. I can’t wait to watch the Diamondbacks.

In the meantime, Mark and I are pretty much following the stay at home guidelines. Although, we did take a weekend drive to Alpine. Could not have asked for better weather and cooler temps. We practiced social distancing and wearing masks in close areas. No new projects last month, just catching up on reading some new books and trying out some new recipes. Mark is pretty honest about scoring a new recipe! Welcome our newest AZPCA member sponsor, Don Hoover. Check out his ad below for the Peoples Mortgage Company. Please remember to let our sponsors know you are a member of the Arizona Porsche club and that you appreciate their support. The mystery June cover photo is Steve and Anne Jackson’s garage. Anne surprised Steve with a framed cover photo for Father’s Day. Hey! I can really use some articles for the newsletter. You know I’m getting desperate when I am writing articles! How about sending me what you’ve been doing to pass the time. Send me an email (amanente42@gmail.com) and I will plan to include your comments in next month’s newsletter. Also if you have an interesting road trip with your Porsche or a DIY car project you would like to share, please send me your article along with pictures. Who knows, you might even win the Writer’s Monthly Award! This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Jan Mackulak for “Remember When?” She will receive a $30. credit on Motorsportreg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Hope to see you at an upcoming event once it is safe to all get together. In the meantime, stay safe!

A Weekend in the Pines

by Angela Manente photos by Jennifer Bartling and Kellie Bouet

D

ue to Covid-19, we had to cancel the annual AZPCA Alpine XX Tour this year. It was disappointing after all the planning that went into the event. But, on a bright note, some of the members that had originally signed up still decided to escape the Valley heat and head to Alpine. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for Friday’s drive to Alpine. Kind of missed having the Boxster, that we previously owned. By 9:30 a.m. we were on our way to Pinetop, Arizona for our lunch stop. Everyone took their own route and left at different times of the morning but arrived by 4:00 p.m. at Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge.

Big Lake in the White Mountains near Springerville,AZ.

On the way back some folks stopped at Hannagan Meadow for lunch on the patio. I took a pass on the Saturday drive to relax in the shade of the pine trees and read a good book. There was a nice cool breeze and the smell of the pine trees was intoxicating.

Checking in.

The usual route that we would have taken was US Route 191 with over 500 turns, all above 7000 feet elevation. Unfortunately, part of US 191 was closed due to forest fires in the area. Instead we took US 60, which still had many sweeping turns and some twisties too. We also took a ride around Big Lake and stopped at Hannagan Meadow for a cold drink before heading to Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge. I know Mark was disappointed about 191 being closed but not me! “Why” you ask? Because for me, it is not as much fun being the passenger. Early Saturday morning, a few cars set off for a ride down to Reserve, New Mexico. The Reserve is situated in the Gila National Forest on the Arizona/New Mexico border. | 14 |

Chillin’ on the porch!

For dinner Saturday night, we went to Avery’s BQ Smokehouse in Springerville, Arizona. The beef brisket was outstanding! Almost as good as “Little Miss BQ” in Phoenix. It was a great night to sit outside on their patio.

Sunday morning rolled around way to quickly. Some couples where going to stop in Greer for breakfast, others were just going to have a leisurely morning and then return home. Even given all the constraints and changes in plans, it was a wonderful weekend with some great friends. We will see what next year brings!

Dan and Kellie Bouet (and baby on the way).

What a beautiful day for a drive!

Taking our morning stroll.

Remember When?

by Jan Mackulak, Social Media Chair

I

’m happy to announce Rook Younger as the winner of AZPCA’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/azpca Social “Media” Distancing Challenge #2! Rook and Debbie will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg that they can use towards any AZPCA event they sign up for. It pays to check Social Media, right? The question was… “WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE AZPCA EVENT EVER AND WHY?” Here is Rook’s answer with his famous Going Places cover photo!

In 2012, Debbie and I attended the PCA Parade in Salt Lake City. We didn’t’t know many club members well then, and the welcoming nature of new friends from the Arizona Region — Jack and Loretta, Jim and Rick, Mark D., Ken and Fran, Susan and Richard — would portend the camaraderie we would enjoy in the years to come. And as I have said before, I will never forget how Chuck and Denise Brasile made us feel part of the club. But the MOST memorable event was Parade in Spokane, WA in 2017. At the Concours awards banquet I was so proud to accept the Ferry Porsche PCA Region of the Year award from Wolfgang Porsche and PCA President Caren Cooper, on behalf of all the volunteers in our region who made it happen. And very pleased that Debbie could join me to accept, as she had been so helpful in our region’s achieving the honor, which I feel is the premier award offered by PCA. Anticipating many more years of memorable events with PCA! Angela Manente (yes, our Going Places editor) also submitted a great answer… Angela Manente - Alpine Tour XIV on June 21, 2013, Ken and Fran Steele was the event organizer. The annual trip had been cancelled the previous 2 years due to wildfires. The ride up route U.S. 191 (or better known as the Devil’s Highway) is always a hair-raising experience, especially with Mark at the wheel. It is such a great social event too with a potluck happy hour on Friday night. Over the years we have met many new members and made wonderful friendships. I was able to find an old black and white photo of the group. Hope this year’s Alpine XX doesn’t have to be cancelled! (Editor’s note: Unfortunately it was, but some folks still came up for the weekend)

Rook Younger Many memorable events… The first big event I attended was Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca in 2011. I had only been a Porsche owner for a couple years, and not very active in the club. Wow! What a way to get immersed in the Porsche culture! An amazing collection of famous Porsche race cars and drivers, and among the beautiful PCA cars on display, former AZPCA President Ken Steele’s GT3 was a highlight.

| 18 |

And as promised, here is Jerry and my Top 10 Most Memorable Events in PCA from the past 33 years. This was hard and I had to negotiate for a few of mine, but after all the drives, social events, tours. Here’s what we decided (my first digital camera was in 2001 so filling in the blanks was easy!): 1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

My first Autocross ever….I’m guessing around 1990. We had watched one of Jerry’s grad students do these with the club so we got to know members that way. Then finally I got brave and said, “Lets Do This!” Oh man was I hooked on speed after that. I got Jerry hooked too and we competed against each other for best times. I remember a 180 degree spin out in my 1979 911 and dust flew everywhere! I never fully got a rhythm down, and I never got much faster…until I did…. My first ever Drivers Ed down at INDE in Wilcox, Nov 2011 sponsored by SAR. Talk about being scared for the first time, but yet excited when I passed slower cars on the track and got my lines down! Jerry just watched me have fun all day, but since we organized a large group of Porsches from AZPCA for a group weekend run; we consumed much food and wine, so he did have a good time. Cynthia Giacchetti and I ended up organizing a few more of these November Tours to Wilcox, including of course wine tasting lunches, happy hours and dinners at night. Many Southern California Tours over the years starting in the 1990s - Each year Steve and Linda Axelson would arrange for us to stay at a different site and do different events - from the Queen Mary to a Pier cottage off the beach coast to sailing the Jada to seeing world-class car museums. Then finally we got in a groove and Co-Led a tour with Jerry Rusca and JoAnn Letchworth down to the Hotel del Coronado for their Sunday Champagne Brunch. We stayed at the Carlsbad Inn and it might have been 2005. We had a HUGE table of people eating and drinking champagne till we were the last ones in the huge buffet room. We asked for MORE champagne but I think the servers all wanted to go home so they kicked us out! The many Vegas Tours (we hosted Fun Runs I-V from 2006-2010) that we attended and were led by others - we did drives to many cool local drive destinations, got to stay at many hotels up and down the strip, hosted great happy hours and group dinners, went to all the shows, hooked up with the Vegas Region for events, and of course…gambled and shopped. My favorite group dinner would still have to be the several times we did a big Friday night dinner at the Hofbrauhaus off the strip - if you can’t get to Germany, this is definitely the next best thing! Alpine V Tour to Tai-Wi-Wi Lodge June 2002 - you never forget your first Alpine Tour and the famous New Mexico Catwalk with Ken and Fran Steele, as our fearless leaders. The drive was better than awesome, the lodge was cool and rustic, the Mexican food was hot, and the pot luck parties every night were a blast. Back then there was no air conditioning, no wifi, no TV/satellite or even a radio in the room! And no sound insulation in the walls.

6.

Our first Hot Air Tour 2018 - Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque hosted by Steve Sapareto - We never realized what we’d see on that trip besides balloons. We actually didn’t see any balloons rise that weekend before we had to leave, but we did see the Very Large Array (look that one up!), the Trinity Bomb Site, the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, and ending at the Hot Air Balloon Museum for a big group banquet Saturday night. I had an awesome time on that trip driving, as Jerry had just recovered from neck surgery and had to endure my driving the whole trip there and back. I had a blast! 7. My first Zone 8 Banquet and Social Media Seminar January 2015. Jerry couldn’t attend so I grabbed Donna Black as my roommate and we followed Rook and Debbie and a handful of others to Temecula, CA to attend a very cool Zone 8 Seminar on Social Media. The drive was fantastic, the food along the way was fab, the Temecula Inn was so nice, and it was great to meet up with all the other SM Chairs from the Zone. The Awards Dinner was my first, and it was cool to meet all the faces associated with the names after all these years. The best part of the whole weekend was I did not have to hear “SLOW DOWN” once! 8. The Durango-Telluride Tour with Rook and Debbie August 2017 - Lots of members attended this tour which included beautiful scenery and stops along the way, a wonderful escape from the heat, great food and drinks and entertainment and fun the entire weekend. A bonus for our group was viewing the Solar Eclipse! On our drive home we stopped at Four Corners, after living here almost 40 years, it was about time we finally stood there! 9. 50th anniversary party for AZPCA at McCormick Ranch Country Club in February 2009. Cynthia Giacchetti and I were the Social Chairs at the time and we had a heavy hand in planning the venue, menu, decorations and designing the Porsche anniversary cakes. But the biggest thrill actually came when Jerry got the chance to take David Hobbs, ex-Formula One announcer and our keynote speaker, back to his hotel, in MY Porsche. I remember saying goodbye as they drove off, leaving me standing in the rain, in my sparkle gown. There’s a back story to that drive back to the hotel, but I’ll let you corner Jerry to tell you! 10. Co-Chairing Flight 26 with Paul Besonday at Scottsdale Civic Plaza in November 2003. We had a record 105 cars parked along the walkways, we had over 150 people at the gala banquet that night, we raised a record at that time of over $17,000 for the Foundation for Blind Children, with a record 100+ auction items. Jerry tabulated scores for the judges and helped everywhere there was a fire. Jack Bair was our surprise keynote from PCNA. It was the hardest job I had ever done for the club, but I’ll remember the many friendships that I built that year.

Remember When? (Continued from page 19)

And the final Social Distancing contest to wind down the summer might be a challenge for some of you, but also a learning opportunity too. Check out the app called TikTok. TikTok has been around about 3 years and is a video-sharing social networking service. If you have already downloaded the app and have an account already, you’re a step ahead of the rest of the members. For those of you who have not seen a TikTok yet, check it out. Enlist your kids/grandkids/neighbor/co-worker to help you set up an account and show you the basics to create your first TikTok. You basically take any video(s) you have already on your phone and add special effects to create short (15-30 sec) music or lip sync videos. Anyone can do it, the app is so fun and easy to use. Just look through tons of other TikToks that people have made to give you ideas…. So the final Social Media Distancing Challenge #3 will be to submit, as a visitor post, to the AZPCA Facebook account, a short TikTok video featuring you and your Porsche (or any Porsche that you might own). You will have until end of September! Get creative, add stickers, special effects, great sound or music bites. But it must feature YOU (or someone in your household) and your Porsche(s). All the TikTok submittals will be shown at the New Members’ Day on October 17th and the winner announced at the event. I posted one of my Porsche TikToks | 20 |

I created during lockdown as an example on Facebook at https:// www.tiktok.com/@boxstergirl/video/6825353101831179526 Good luck and remember, have fun and hashtag your video on your profile with #AZPCA and #Porsche so I can find it!

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region

JUNKYARD, Behind the Gates at California’s Secretive European-Car Salvage Yard

T

his is not a book that is liable to win any literary awards; the photos will not receive awards for photographic artistry. It is possible that many people could flip through it and say it’s just snapshots of junk cars. But for someone interested in old cars it is a fascinating ‘read’. When the book arrived this reviewer cracked it open and page 88 came up – Racks and racks of dusty dirty car parts jumbled together, unidentifiable except for a bin of dirty old starters. Jammed between two rows of these racks, a very dusty, dirty, hasn’t been touched in decades, bumper missing 356B Carrera Coupe! At the risk of offending many people’s sensibilities, including my own, it was a Holy Cow! moment for this reviewer. That this massive junkyard of exotic, European car bodies and parts exists in Metro-Los Angeles, right under our very noses, is shocking. The Preface provides seven pages of text explaining how this ‘collection’ (pile might be a more appropriate term) came to be, and why it still exists. The remainder of the book is simply a collection of photos. Some show racks of parts similar to the racks at Parts Obsolete. Some of them look like what Hollywood would put together to convey the concept of a Junkyard, except that these cars are much more exotic than the Fords and Chevys in most movie junkyards. None the less, the junk treatment given long ago to bodies (and indeed it is mostly bare bodies shown in the piles) of what are now collector cars, grates on modern sensibilities.

and bird droppings,. This reviewer has already been through the book three times slowly, and still finds new glimpses of Porches each time. And there is always something to grate on the nerves, like a 300SL Gullwing, door up, hood up, covered with dust; even having bird droppings on the intake manifold! Anyone with an interest in old sports cars and an imagination or ability to visualize, will find that the pictures in this book can lead to hours of contemplation. All the pictures have captions, some informative, some seeming somewhat forced, but usually thought provoking. This is a book for a visual person, who will find it fascinating with something different to think about each time the complex subject matter of these pictures is viewed. .Under the dust jacket, the cover of this book is a glossy photo of a huge pile of car bodies. It took this reviewer several trys but I was eventually able to positively identify 15 different Porsches in that cover picture. Anyone who can find a 16th, do let me know. JUNKYARD is hard bound and consists of 176, 9-1/2 x 11-1/2 inch heavyweight pages, with 157 photos, some double page. By the time you read this it should be available for $40.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from QuartoKnows.com

JUNKYARD, Behind the Gates at California’s Secretive European-Car Salvage Yard, by Dieter Rebmann & Roland Lőwisch, Published: May 26, 2020 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN

The pictures in JUNKYARD also show cars, and rare exotic ones at that, parked door handle to door handle, bumper to bumper, in rickety looking buildings, absolutely covered in dust

Never say Forever...

by Rob Turner, Maverick Region

W

hat defines a “keeper”, a forever car? What makes you want to hold on to a rolling piece of steel, rubber, plastic and fabric when the rust sets it, the trim sags, the motor is telling you it needs some TLC or it’s just begging you to take it out on the road and thrash it? What makes you want to keep it? Is it sentimentality or an investment or has it become part of the family? Porsche AG tells us that over 70% of Porsches manufactured are still on the road. So, for many of us, the Porsche sitting in the garage is our forever car.

2. 1975 Ford Thunderbird – (my wife’s first car)

Me? Not so much. I’ve never been the sentimental sort when it comes to cars. Do I miss several of the Porsches I’ve bought and sold? You bet! That ’76 930 Turbo Carrera? Yep! Or how about the slat- gray metallic ’93 968. Oh yeah. Or LMNHED (Lemonhead) 1 – the ’02 Boxster S in Speed Yellow with factory speedster humps. Definitely. I want that one back for sure. But every time I have declared a car a keeper, a forever car – well, its days are numbered.

6. 1979 Fiat Strada – (car parents gave me to get me away from the cycle)

I’ve owned a lot of cars. Seems like there is a new one in the garage all the time. Funny thing though, a majority were used (or maybe more politically correct to say pre-owned). What does this list say about us and our automotive choices? Well except for Porsches, we get tired of cars pretty fast. We say we’re going to keep them forever and don’t and for the most part have owned a little bit of everything. But I will say that when I sell a car, it’s usually in much better shape than when I bought it. Not bragging, but buying one of my cars is a good idea. Why? It will be spotlessly clean, the maintenance will be up to date and (especially with the Porsches) it may have some very tasty mods installed. You see, when it comes to Porsches, I have a problem. I call it the Slippery Slope — I can’t help myself, I just have to make the car better. My wife commented about my “hobby” and noted that my automotive excess tended to be very expensive. “But at least I’m not addicted to Golf !” I proudly pointed out and then went on to say that at least she was not a Golf widow. No, she countered, she was a Garage widow – which amounts to same thing and based on the cost of Porsches + mods, she pointed out that we would probably come out ahead if I started playing golf 2-3 times a week. Hmmm, she had me there… So I thought I would compile a list of all the vehicles we have owned or been assigned (meaning company cars) since my first 1965 Ford Mustang (listed in chronological order from first vehicle owned to most recent). This list includes the cars my wife drove up to and when we met as well as the cars that I have purchased for my two sons (but still held the title). It is quite a long list. There are some pretty bad vehicles along the way — but some really good ones too – so enjoy. 1. 1965 Ford Mustang – (my first car, light green – 289 V8 with factory 4-speed) | 26 |

3. 1972 Chevy Vega – (I drove this for six months until the motor let go) 4. 1980 Puch Moped – (really awful college transportation, but dirt cheap)

5. 1976 Honda CB 400F – (upgrade from Puch, rode it from upstate NY to TX)

7. 1972 Porsche 914 – (1st Porsche. Whole stories about this one) 8. 1985 Suzuki GS550E – (after Porsche 914 rusted away, it was my main ride) 9. 1980 Ford Thunderbird – (wife’s second car)

10. 1965 Ford Mustang – (different from one listed above, split time with Suzuki)

11. 1986 Acura Integra – (1st new car! Yeah, traded in the Suzuki on it) 12. 1990 Acura Integra ES – (2nd new car)

13. 1986 Nissan Pulsar – (ouch we had one of those – actually was my wife’s car)

14. 1987 Porsche 944S – (2nd Porsche, out first son rode around in this)

15. 1990 Ford Aerostar Minivan – (company car. Yuck, ewww, terrible) 16. 1993 Mazda 626 – (leveraged a poopy diaper to get a deal on this) 17. 1993 Dodge Caravan – (company car, meh…) 18. 1990 BMW 525i – (our first Beemer)

19. 1996 Dodge Caravan – (company car meh x 2)

20. 1999 Ford Explorer (great story about this one. Look for the new e-book Kindle release)

21. 1999 Dodge Intrepid – (company car; it was purple and we had it 6 weeks) 22. 1999 BMW 528i – (another great story included in upcoming Kindle release)

23. 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera – 930 (BAD BOY, what ‘cha gonna do!?)

24. 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo – 951 (1st Track car)

49. 2013 Ford F-150 Platinum – (towed The Beast to and from track)

26. 1999 Porsche Boxster – (Bad Boy=Garage queen, 951=Track Car, Boxster=Fun)

51. 2002 Porsche Boxster S – (LMNHED 1, I want this one back)

25. 2001 Ford Excursion – (needed to tow track car above to the track – duh)

27. 1992 BMW 525i Touring – (another great story in the upcoming Kindle eBook) 28. 2001 Volvo S60 – (another short timer; it came and went fast) 29. 1983 Mercedes 230E – (Bullet, great stories abound) 30. 2005 Honda CR-V – (meh!)

31. 2006 Audi A3 – (answer when told to get rid of 930, 951 and Boxster) 32. 2007 Honda CR-V - (meh x 2!)

33. 2004 VW Touareg V8 – (nice SUV if we could keep it running) 34. 1992 Mazda Miata – (1st Miata track car)

35. 1993 Porsche 968 – (yeah, I know, should have kept this one)

36. 2001 Porsche Boxster S – (1st yellow one, totaled at Boxstoberfest no less) 37. 2007 Ford F-150 – (older son’s 1st car)

38. 1995 Jeep Wrangler Sahara – (younger son’s 1st car)

39. 2007 VW Passat – (answer to Touareg, was supposed to be a keeper)

40. 2006 Porsche Cayman S – (properly set up for track events) 41. 2008 VW GTI – (older son’s 2nd car)

50. 2015 Jeep Cherokee – (oldest son’s current car)

52. Hyundai Elantra GT – (youngest son’s current car)

53. 2014 Porsche Cayman S – (Lemon Head 2, not labeled a forever car;-) 54. 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel – (replaced Mini, thank goodness)

So, a couple of observations. My first company car was a Ford Aerostar minivan, which for some reason my father-in-law insisted on calling an Astroloid. Nowadays, when I see a clappedout Aerostar/Astroloid creeping down the street I wonder how it’s still on the road. They all have a rusted patina that just screams ‘please take me to the nearest junkyard’. Come to think of it, back when I drove mine, I wonder how it stayed on the road. It was beyond terrible. The shortest time I “owned” a car? Six weeks. A colleague ordered a purple Dodge Intrepid and left the company shortly after he took delivery. Since my lease was up, I got stuck with it. I left the company six weeks later. My about to be ex-boss asked me if I was leaving because of the purple car? I said yes – paused – then laughed. But really, that car was cursed. The longest we have owned a car? My wife’s Mini Countryman. It stayed with us over five years. But good news, it was replaced with the Cayenne Diesel. Wow, that is quite a list! Over 50+ cars in a lifetime. And I have no doubt that 60 is easily attainable (I am sure my wife is cringing as she reads this). So tell me, what should our 55thcar be? What Porsche will I be adding to the collection next? Oh. and I have the contact info of the couple that bought LMNHED 1 — just saying. And on that exhaust note….

42. 2004 Porsche Cayenne – (new tires for Passat meant it days were numbered)

43. Porsche 944 Turbo – (another 951 track car; fun to drive, but always broken) 44. 2007 BMW 530i – (replaced the Jeep, younger son’s 2nd car)

45. 2002 Porsche Boxster S – (the red one, strangely I never bonded with this one) 46. 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman – (traded GTI for this) 47. 2006 Mini Cooper S JCW GP Kit – (#1393 of 2015 built, loved this Mini rocket)

RL Turner is the author of The Driver, a series of action adventure novels, available in both print and ebook on Amazon (more info at www.thedriver-series.com). Having owned a dozen Porsches and driven hundreds of laps on racetracks throughout the southwest, author Turner knows a few things about going fast in a Porsche and then fixing them when he breaks something.

Write On, Baby! by Danielle Badler

I

t was harder than I thought. In today’s world, all I figured I had to do was type the words in Google Search and out would pop exactly what I was looking for. But no. Here I was, trying to capture vague memories of memorable words on magazine print from many years ago, in order to impress on you, dear reader, the joys of great monthly automotive journalism. And I was being sent to subscription offers, modern photo files of someone’s idea of a 40-year old classic, jerky in-car videos of cars chasing motorcycles. Oh, in one case I actually identified the magazine and its table of contents. But then I was directed to buy the magazine, if I wanted to actually read the damn thing. Car and Driver, May 1965. David E. Davis, Jr. in a Ferrari 275 LM, on the New Jersey Turnpike in the wee wee hours, Philadelphia to New York. If you happen to have the issue, keep it! And send me a copy of the piece. I want to see if it really is as good as my vague recall. Because I do know that it hooked me on the flat-out joys of well-done print journalism. And David E. became my paragon. All I remember from that piece is his description of coming up on semi trucks at 150, the wail of the banshee close behind his head. I was glowing. Although I did, of course, try to double my pleasure with Road & Track. Am I the only one who found the mag kind of goofy, a bit frumpy, with a sense of humor that was a bit oblong? I mean, the April issue always featured a satire road test – one year, the Goodyear Blimp, another year, the Space Shuttle. Yeah, ok, but I’m still hungry. And then there was the Cyclops series. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Google it. Funny, I can’t recall a single story that “sent” me. But I do recall gobbling up the Formula 1 reviews from the one, the only, Henry N. Manney III. I never embraced his idiosyncratic style, but he did feed my wanderlust for far-flung, exotic locales. No. For writing excellence, David E. and his merry band struck the chord, again and again. Not only that, in certain instances they actually created automotive mythology. The BMW 2002, for example, in 1968. You could argue that this one piece actually created the BMW mystique. In an interview shortly before he passed, David E. admitted that he thought it was the best car review he ever wrote … and it got him fired. The headline read “Turn Your Hymnals to 2002. David E. Davis, Jr. Blows His Mind on the Latest from BMW.” What made it so great? “To my way of thinking, the 2002 is one of modern civilization’s all-time best ways to get somewhere sitting down. It grabs you. You sit in magnificently adjustable seats with great, tall windows all around you. You are comfortable and you can see in every direction. You start it. Willing and un-lumpy is how it feels. No rough idle, no zappy noises to indicate that the task you propose might be anything more than child’s play for those 114 Bavarian superhorses….

Them you can slaughter, no matter how hard they try. And they always try. They really believe all that jazz about their highlytuned, super-sophisticated sports machines, and the first couple of drubbings at the hands of the 2002 makes them think they’re off on a bad trip or something.” Why did he get fired? For criticizing the Blaupunkt radio in the car, which he said “couldn’t pick up a Manhattan station from the far end of the Brooklyn Bridge.” The publisher wanted him to apologize to Blaupunkt and he refused. So he walked. Although he came back for a second stint as editor, years later, before going on to found Automobile. Personal admission; I bought a 2002, as soon as I could, which was after college. Drove it for five years. Every word he wrote about it was true. And then I bought my first Porsche. But my ultimate, all-time, balls-out thrill ride came in the form of a piece that ran in the July 1982 issue of Car and Driver. And it had nothing necessarily to do with cars. For this article, I found the story on my first Google search. Hooray. Can’t believe I even had the year right. The headline: “Bend the Sky: Riding Shotgun in One of the Most Potent Fighter Planes Ever Built.” For years, I’ve called it The Ultimate Ride. Larry Griffin: “…. I’ve been for rides as insanely fast as David Hobbs’ McLaren BMW back in the days when it was a match for any Porsche 935 and fast enough to give me a whole new window of reference, but it simply has no bearing on what’s happening in the F-4. There are none of the familiar points of reference you have in the car, corners and hills and guardrails and trees and bridges, stuff you can assimilate even at hyperspeed because it’s familiar territory. The Phantom takes all that away and throws it down the supersonic laundry chute. Here we are sitting on the ground. zzZZSSHAP! Here we are at 5000 feet. This is not the Friendly Skies.” Here’s more: “Then, with the gentleness that always accompanies his first move of the controls, Scott Campbell lifts the gray malevolence, call-number Two-One-Five, up out of the funnel, rolls it over, and aims the canopy back down into the ditch where the 600-gallon belly tank was a moment ago. We are hanging upside down at almost 700 mph, close enough to comb our hair with underbrush, and Campbell is reciting ‘… and there’s the target, aaanndd we’re outa here…’” There’s more. A lot more, if you’re interested. But I do have a footnote. In the ‘90s, someone worked for me who was ex-Navy public affairs. He told me they had a copy of the story, this story, hanging on a bulletin board in their offices, at the Pentagon. Yeah, if print ever disappears as a communications medium, it will be too, too bad. If that day ever comes, just pray they don’t also eliminate your computer search function. A gem, in whatever form, if you can access it, can last a lifetime.

“What you like to look for are Triumphs and Porsches and such. G O I N G P L A C E S 87.2020
