PRESIDENT’S CORNER Hello All:

W

ell, the monsoons are here so I am always careful to watch the weather so my baby doesn’t get sand blasted in a dust storm, or ball peened with hail when I go for a spin. There is no monthly meeting at the beginning of July. (This is typical each year). As I write this the Alpine Tour group has just returned from the White Mountains, where I’m sure it was much cooler. One of the participants had a car issue, but everyone is safe. He will provide the details in an upcoming issue of Going Places. We have a new appointed Director at Large to fill the vacancy with the recent Board and Chair position changes. He is Richard Wyatt, who also creates the MSR links for all of the club registrations. Thanks Richard, for stepping up. Flight 44 will be held at the grass area of McCormick Ranch (near Scottsdale Rd. and McCormick Pkwy). More details will be coming soon. The following are some upcoming events: • • • • •

July 16 – Driving Tour & Picnic at Red Rock State Park July 23 – Porsches n Pancakes – at the Thumb August 3 – Monthly Meeting at Lou Malnatis in north Scottsdale August 6 - Annual AZPCA Night at the Diamondbacks August 27 – Porsches n Pancakes at the Black Mountain Coffee Shop

I hope to see you all at an upcoming event. Drive Safely, Mark

ou know it’s summer in Arizona when the monsoon season arrives!

We definitely experienced this on our drive back last Sunday (6/26) from the Ken Steele Alpine tour weekend. It was raining so hard the windshield wipers could barely keep up! The car even felt like it was floating on the road. Thank goodness it didn’t rain like that all the way back to the valley. All in all, the weekend in Alpine was a good time; lots of new members and first-time attendees' participating. Next month’s issue will have two stories about the trip. In the meantime, check out all the awesome pictures posted on our website at Alpine-2022 We have some great articles in this month’s issue. Definitely read Rook and Debbie’s experience volunteering at PCA’s 66th Parade in the Poconos. Which leads me into announcing this month’s winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places. It is Rook Younger for contributing “66th Porsche Parade 2022.” Rook will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I appreciate the articles and pictures that members send me because without them there would be no newsletter. Just remember if you want to take a cover worthy photo, it needs to be vertical orientation I know I’m being a nag but, I love to use our members’ photos for our Going Places newsletter/magazine. Even though the weather is hot, it is no excuse not to come out and enjoy some of the social events and drives planned. Check out the newsletter and club calendar of events coming up for the latest information Click HERE Hope to see you soon at an upcoming event.

REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS

Driving Tour & Picnic at Red Rock State Park Saturday, July 16 No part of our state is more beautiful than the spectacular Red Rock Country surrounding Sedona. This drive’s destination is Red Rock State Park, a 286-acre nature preserve and environmental education center with stunning scenery. The driving route will take the “back way” toward Sedona, avoiding the congestion that is inevitable on the main route. At the end of the scenic drive we will enjoy a lunch buffet at the park. After lunch you will want to check out the park visitor center, where you can explore the exhibits and view films which present Sedona history and wildlife, and which will take you on a flying tour of the red rocks with some phenomenal aerial scenes. You can explore the trails, spy for wildlife, or just enjoy the beautiful scenery. When you are ready to leave the park you can go into Sedona for shopping or other activities, then return on the Red Rock Scenic Byway to I-17. Or you can drive back on the less-heavily traveled but still interesting route through Cornville back to I-17.

Go to the event page on the AZPCA website for more details: https:// az.pca.org/event/driving-tour-picnic-at-red-rock-state-park/

PORSCHES AND PANCAKES

Saturday - July 23, 2022 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. THE THUMB 9393 East Bell Rd Scottsdale, AZ 85260

Join us at the eclectic and unique Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market under the Chandelier for a memorable Porsche & Pancakes Breakfast. It’s Saturday morning and after a long hard week at the office, you decide that you need to get some high-octane gas for the race car you are taking to the DE next week, get the spouse’s and your car washed and waxed by hand, find a really nice wine to take to your neighbors for dinner tonight and you are craving a hearty breakfast that you will top off with a cappuccino and a pastry. It sounds like you will be making 5-6 stops and getting back home late this afternoon, doesn’t it? Well it doesn’t have to be that way because you can do all of the above and more with a single stop at Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market, including an optional hand car wash if we can pull the logistics together to determine demand for that Saturday morning. From the outside at its Bell Road location it looks like a typical gas station/car wash but once you enter the front door you realize that you and Toto are no longer in Kansas. In fact, just to the right of the main entry is a dining area with a chandelier. When did you last see a chandelier in a gas station? Bottom line, sign-up and come on down, good food and friendship promised for the event! Order off the full menu and pay for your order (Breakfast Entrees under $15)

Questions? contact Frank Grimmelmann at fgrimmelmann@mindspring.com

Registration is required! Event limited to 45 people. Registration link to MotorsportReg: https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/porsches-n-pancakes-at-tom-thumbs-fresh-market-thumb-pcaarizona-254040

AZPCA AUTOCROSS SEASON EVENT #9 STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL PHOTO BY KIM KEMPER

T

he AZPCA Region Autocross Season Event #9, the last event of this season, was held on Saturday April 30, 2022, at Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP). This event was a near sell-out prior to the event but, unfortunately at the last minute a couple of drivers had to cancel their entry due to some vehicle mechanical issues. Thirty-Five drivers enjoyed a course designed by a long-time veteran auto crosser, Scott M. The drivers drove four-timed laps in the morning session and three-timed laps in the afternoon session. Just to note - Scott has more years auto-crossing than most of the drivers are of age. The course was a counter-clockwise direction course with a few old school elements. The course design allowed the drivers to pick a wider entry and exit lines in/out of several course elements. There were three-sweepers, and the front showcase straightaway. This course was the second least cone penalty intensive course of the season with a total of 9 kills. The event penalty average for this season has been approximately 12.8 cones per event. The weather for the last event was seasonal for this time of the year, very warm, and with a nice breeze to keep the warm temperature in check and comfortable for the entire event. Three AZPCA Region members attended their first autocross event and they had fun driving their Porsche cars. John L., has been an AZPCA Region for a few years but, this was his first autocross event. John drove his 2008 Porsche Carrera 4S, and his best time was 45.955 seconds. John stated that “This was a hoot and I had a lot of fun.” Hopefully, we’ll see John again in the fall. Frank F., just joined the AZPCA Region a couple of weeks prior to the event, and he drove his 2001 Porsche Carrera, and his best time was 51.912 seconds. Frank stated that “I’m having fun trying to figure this out.” Daniel R., just joined AZPCA Region the week prior to the event, and he drove his 2012 Porsche Carrera S, with his best time of 48.131 seconds. Daniel stated “I am having a lot of fun and I would like to do this again.” Hopefully, Daniel will also join in on the fun next fall.

16

This event consisted mostly of Carreras and Caymans competing for the “Top Porsche Time of Day (TPTOD) in Group P. There was also a 968 in the hunt, driven by the Autocross Co-Chair Rick A., and his best lap-time was 48.302 seconds. Autocross Chair, Kim K., drove his 2016 Porsche GT3 RS to his best time of 42.226 seconds on his third lap in the morning session for the best time in Group P. Eric S. drove his 2006 Porsche Carrera S to second place with his best lap of 42.453 seconds on his first lap in the afternoon a session. Eric had a passenger riding along with him and if Eric would have taken his afternoon runs solo, maybe he could have picked up another couple or three tenths that he needed to best Kim. Eric T. placed third in his 2014 Porsche Cayman S with his best time of 43.553 seconds on his first lap in the afternoon session.

In Group X, AZPCA Region members, Ealing J. and Jonathan B. placed first and second respectively. Ealing again showed us the fast way around the course on his third lap in the morning session in 40.937 seconds. Jonathan B. drove his best lap-time on his last lap in the afternoon session with 41.369 seconds.

Jonathan B. drove in the first group and Ealing drove in the second group. Jonathan was unable to best Ealing’s time so when Ealing took to the course for his afternoon run, he already knew that he had the top Group X time for the event. In the afternoon session Ealing was unable to best his morning lap-time. Yours truly was the back marker of the AZPCA Region members driving their Group X cars, with a best lap-time of 42.051 seconds which occurred on the last lap in the afternoon session. As previously mentioned, regarding “Cone Kills”, this course was not a cone killing intensive course like the other events, especially not like Event #7 whereas, 22 cones were sacrificed for that event. As stated in the Event #8 article, Eric T and Joel S. were tied at 13 “Cone Kills” each, prior to this event.

Joel was unable to attend this event. Eric had three “Cone Kills” which earned him the distinguished honor of being the Top AZPCA Region Autocross Cone Killer for the 2021-2022 Autocross Season with a total of 16 “Cone Kills.” Eric must have spent a lot time in his garage throughout the year waxing all those cone marks off his car. “Wax On – Wax Off.” That is a lot of waxing! Just because we are in the summer break, does not mean that the AZPCA Region Autocross Ace Correspondence Reporting Team (ACRT) Investigators are on vacation. As a matter of fact, they are hard at work following up on many leads as to who is this Mystery Course Designer and if there is more than one Mystery Course Designer. It is believed that the mystery course designer was not at this event. One of the Team’s Investigators was following up on a Continued on page 18

lead that the Mystery Course Designer may have been attending a family function or a non-PCA autocross event in another state. The ACRT has three prospects identified as to who may be the Mystery Course Designer. For the integrity of the investigation the ACRT cannot reveal any details at this time. The ACRT will report their findings at the conclusion of their investigation and the results will be provided in this publication. This autocross season was an outstanding AZPCA Region Autocross Season. There were several first-time auto crossers and several PCA members from other PCA Regions attending the events throughout the year. Also, we were honored to have the PCA Zone 8 Autocross Chair, Bill T., and the former PCA National Autocross Committee Chair, Kathy T., attended an event earlier in the season. This writer has been to numerous PCA Region autocross events in other Regions and Zones over a period of three decades and have not seen any other event organized better than an AZPCA Region autocross event. It is apparent that the AZPCA Region Autocross events must be appealing to other PCA members from outside of our Region. The Autocross Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A. have done a great job and producing top quality events all year and the word must be spreading AZPCA A-X #9, April 30, 2022 DRIVER

throughout Porsche Land that AZPCA Region autocross events are the Premier of all autocross events. Speaking of being successful, our events would be not be successful if it wasn’t for the hard work of the team of many volunteers. The Autocross Chairs whole-heartedly would like to thank both the setup and teardown crews for making the events throughout the season a success. The setup crews consisted of Kim K., Rick A., William P., Jim E., Dane T., Chris M., Ken O, and Ken M. The teardown crews consisted of Ealing J., Jonathan B., Eric S., Dane T., Scott O., and Marc T. If I forgot someone, I am truly sorry. And from the Autox Co-Chairs we also wish to thank Ken M. for his creative Going Places articles on our events! During the summer break, the Autocross Chairs have elected to try something new, just to keep the competitive spirit in high gear during the hot summer months, “Bench Racing” for the autocross season attending members who would like to join in on the true aspect of the auto crossing sport, ‘The Social Aspect.” The Autocross Chairs are tentatively planning this bench racing event for July 30, 2022, possibly to be held at Octane Raceway/ Mavrix, on Talking Stick Way, in Scottsdale. No doubt there will be a lot of lies swapped at this event. This will be a lot of fun to be amongst our autocross friends.

The next AZPCA Region autocross event is scheduled for October 15, 2022, at AMP. The registration is well underway and already filling up so you better sign up before you end on the waitlist. The Region will host a two-day autocross event in November. On Friday, November 11, 2022 (Veterans Day), the Autocross Chairs will host a special event (Trackcross) which will be conducted on the AMP Road Course. This event will be conducted with safety in mind whereas, the course will be designed utilizing the same cones that are used on the autocross course and cars will be spaced on a single lap format. This is not a Driver’s Education (DE) or a Time Trial event, no passing will be allowed. It is just a different style autocross event held on a portion of the AMP Road Course. The next day, Saturday, November 12, 2022, will be a regular autocross event held on the AMP Autocross Skidpad. These two events are separate events and require separate entries and speedwaivers. When you log-on to your MSR Account you will notice that each day is separately listed and if you’re going to sign up for both days you will need to sign up twice and complete both Speedwaivers, and the AMP waivers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Autocross Chairs at autocross@az.pca.org. Enjoy your summer and don’t forget about the other fun-packed Region events.

AZPCA DRIVING TOUR TO THE HORNY TOAD

STORY AND PHOTOS BY Andy Cole

O

n Sunday, May 22nd, AZPCA drivers and passengers met at E. Mayo and Scottsdale Rd. for their instructions and driver’s meeting. Waivers were signed and Rook delivered another fabulous route briefing before we were ready for take off. With 27 cars in total, we split into 2 groups with lead and sweep cars in each group to keep everyone in check and on time. Although this event was not a long drive, we headed East on Mayo Blvd. before turning right onto Tatum Blvd., under the 101 and then a left onto E. Deer Valley Dr. Inevitably, the lights caught many of the cars out and the groups became a little splintered, however; the sweep cars did an excellent job of keeping all participants heading in the right direction. After taking a right onto N. Cave Creek Rd., we then took a left on Sonoran Desert Dr. and headed west towards I-17. Sonoran Desert Dr. offers a fabulous view of the hills, flat lands and in particular a vast array of cactus for all to see. A right onto N. 27th Rd., followed by another right turn onto W. Carefree Hwy., and we were heading towards Cave Creek and our lunch destination. A left onto N. Tom Darlington Dr. and then just as we thought we were closing in, another right on E. Stagecoach Pass Rd. that provided us with some lovely curvy roads to test our cars before a left onto N. Mule Train Rd. and then a left onto E. Cave Creek Rd. It was plain sailing from there, as we had all caught up in our respective groups and we rolled into the Horny Toad parking lot as planned and on time. Fifty lunch ready PCA members enjoyed the fabulous food, especially the strawberry cheesecake, although a note from this writer, order one and share with two possibly three people because the cheesecake portions were huge! Great conversation took place amongst the members and the atmosphere was just what was needed for a relaxed Sunday lunchtime. Delighted to have shared a table with the owners of a Taycan and there was deep and interesting discussion on the benefits of battery electric vehicles, specifically when comparing the Porsche Taycan with the Tesla Model S or X. As lunch came to a close, so did the official drive event and all participants went on their way! On behalf of the members who attended this event I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Rook and Debbie Younger for organizing another fabulous driving event!

66th Porsche Parade 2022 STORY AND PHOTOS BY Rook Younger

T

his year’s week-long PCA Parade event was held at the Kalahari Resort in the Pocono Mountains in Northeastern Pennsylvania, a couple hours’ drive from New York City, New Jersey, or Philadelphia. In June the Poconos are beautifully lush and green, and provided a welcome contrast to the record-breaking temps which we dodged while Debbie and I were away from our desert home. The resort is a 2-hour drive from the Philadelphia airport, where we picked up our rental car and headed to the town of Mt. Pocono. The Kalahari is an Africa-themed vacation resort featuring a huge indoor water park, an arcade, and other family-friendly elements. Their newly opened convention center was the scene for PCA Parade 2022.

Debbie and I did not stay at the resort, for several reasons, but we found a convenient alternative among limited options, at a Comfort Inn only two miles away. Yeah, not so “resort-y, but we knew we wouldn’t be spending much time in our room anyway, as we had work to do every day of the event. And we didn’t pack our swimsuits for the waterpark anyway.

24

Pre-Event We arrived a few days prior to the start of the event, at the request of national Driving Tour Chair Greg Halverson, who had expressed the need for assistance with final plans and logistics for the driving tours and other associated Parade events for which he was responsible. Debbie’s experience as an event planner came as a bonus, and we were both more than glad to help out. There are many accounts on the Web, in social media, etc. of the various activities that went on during the week, and I encourage you to check those out for a comprehensive story of PCA’s annual gathering of Porsches and those who share the passion for our special cars (2022 Parade in the Poconos). Rather than recount those, this article focuses on Debbie’s and my personal experience as participants and as part of the Parade Staff who do the behind-the-scenes work to make the event such a huge success every year.

2022 PCA Parade Staff, led by Ron Gordon, Parade Chair. Much of our time in the two days leading up to the opening of registration was spent working with Greg on assessing the tour staging area, gathering equipment, planning the layout for as many as 14 separate tour groups which would be heading out each day, and ensuring that we were ready with all the tour information for the 1100-plus registrants who would be showing up at registration on Sunday.

Sunday Registration ran all day Sunday, with Greg handling most of the Tour registration troubleshooting challenges while Debbie and I worked with the very helpful volunteers who manned the registration table to ensure that participants had their wrist bands, schedules, driving directions, etc. that they would need when they arrived at the staging area for their tours during the upcoming week. Sunday evening featured a reception hosted by our Zone Rep Lori DeCastro. It was nice catching up with friends from around the zone and meeting others who had traveled across the country to this year’s event. If you get the chance to meet Lori, you will find her to be a very enthusiastic, friendly, outgoing person who is a great representative for our zone. Capping the evening was The Pirelli Welcome Party and Social Hour, which featured remarks from Parade, PCA, and PCNA attendees, and a WORLD REVEAL from PCNA (check out the particulars on PCA and other media sites).

Monday Monday was reserved for the premier event of the week, the PCA National Concours d’Elegance. Always a delight to the eyes, the Concours is an amazing display of Porsches, from some of the earliest 356 models to the latest Taycan, with just about every model and variation represented at the event. 66th Porsche Parade 2022 Continued from page 25 Parade truly is about the people as well as the cars, and owners are always happy to chat about their special Porsches. Unfortunately, a steady drizzle on Sunday moved the Concours venue from the planned location at the nearby golf course to the large parking area outside the Convention Center. Many more of the cars were on display inside, where they had prepped for Monday’s Concours judging.

Standing out in the Historics display was Arizona Region member Richard Strahota’s 964 Carrera RS, in its special Rubystone Red paint scheme.

A quite interesting “drop-in” not registered for the event was this 959, a model which always attracts attention as Porsche’s first supercar.

Tuesday Up early on Tuesday, we took the short drive to the Kalahari and began the first of four mornings managing logistics at the staging area for the hundreds of cars that would be arriving in anticipation of their scheduled tours. Four destinations were offered: Yuengling Brewery, Lehigh Valley Scenic Railway, Nurnberger Bierhaus, and Fabspeed Motorsport. With the invaluable help of conscientious volunteers, the cars were directed to their assigned group parking areas. Participants were briefed by Greg in the drivers meetings, ensuring that everyone understood the importance of safety and other important details they needed to know before their tour headed out into the beautiful Pennsylvania landscape. With as many as 14 tours going out each day, and up to four separate groups per tour, managing the staging and getting everyone on their way on time was no small task.

Driving Tour Staging Hosted by the always-engaging and entertaining (and Arizona Region member) Mark Shevitz, the Concours d'Elegance and PCA National Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening featured an address by PCA President Tom Gorsuch, talks from Porsche and PCNA dignitaries, and the presentation of national awards: The Lazar Blanchard PCA Enthusiast of the Year, The Porsche Family of the Year, The Ferry Porsche Trophy for PCA Region of the Year, The Zone Representatives Award, and The Porsche Concours d'Elegance Awards. See list of award winners here: https://www.porscheparade.org//concours-results-2022 A tradition each year at this banquet is to ask everyone to stand, then sit based on the number of PCA Parades they have attended. Of the 800+ in attendance, our Arizona Region friends Rob and Kerry Biddle were among the last standing! Check out the video: https://

www.facebook.com/PorscheParade/videos/752838126155766

It was a long day for Debbie and me, so we ducked out early so we could get some sleep before the alarm went off at 4:30 a.m. the next morning.

Wednesday-Thursday Though mornings were busy, once the last tour group departed we had a chance to relax and took time to socialize with friends old and new, and checked out the Hospitality area and Parade Store (I found a nice event polo that goes well with my mostly red-andblack Porsche wardrobe!). I was glad to have a chance to say “Hi” to Charlotte Chirinos, who was in charge of the store, and who as PCA Member Services Manager has been my “Most Valuable Resource” whenever our club has had a question or issue that required attention from the National office. She is always responsive, conscientious, and a delight to work with. Most afternoons were free and offered time for us to head out in our Nissan Kicks rental vehicle to explore the area, following routes suggested in “Destination Drives” Greg had developed for those who chose not to participate in the guided driving tours or who wished to head out on their own to a destination not covered by the guided tours. On Thursday we took the scenic drive to Jim Thorpe, PA, a town renamed in 1954 in honor of the famous athlete whose exploits in the early 1900s made him a national hero. Jim Thorpe, the town, is quaint and historic, with its major feature being the Lehigh Railway that hauled coal from the mines in the area. The railway now offers tours in historic rail cars through the scenic Lehigh Gorge.

66th Porsche Parade 2022 Continued from page 27 Being architecture buffs, Debbie and I took a tour of the Asa Packer mansion that overlooks the town. The Mansion was the home of philanthropist, railroad magnate, and founder of Lehigh University, Asa Packer. Built in 1861, the home consists of three stories, 18 rooms, and approximately 11,000 square feet of living space, and was constructed over a span of two years at a total cost of $14,000. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Another Destination Drive led parade-goers to the Martin Guitar Museum and factory in Nazareth, PA. (If you follow American auto racing you know that Nazareth is the home town of the famous Andretti racing family, but surprisingly there is no museum or other tribute to Mario or his family of racers in the town.) We took the drive to Nazareth on Thursday with Greg. He had made arrangements for a personal tour with Matt Kennedy, nephew of current Martin Executive Chairman Chris Martin, and a member of the CF Martin board of directors. Chris and Matt are Porsche owners and came out for the Concours on Monday. Our tour with Matt took us behind the scenes for an in-depth look at how the iconic instruments are made by the skilled craftsmen and women who have perfected the art of guitar production. It became obvious why a Martin guitar is considered the Porsche of the guitar world. I am as much into guitars as I am Porsches, so this was like getting a personal tour of the factory in Stuttgart by someone named “Porsche.”

Friday We said our good-byes to Greg and others whom we had worked with, and left after the last tours went out on Friday. So we were not around for Saturday’s Parade of Porsches, which took 300 cars to Pocono Raceway for a lap around the famous track. The racetrack venue was also the site of the Parade autocross competition that ran on Wednesday and Thursday. We had accompanied Greg on a test run of the route earlier in the week, so got a preview of what the parade of cars would see along the way before they entered the racing facility and circuited the high-speed track. Look for the video on PCA media sites!

Miscellaneous Thoughts We found several local eateries that we went back to for breakfast, lunch, or dinner several times during our stay. Great to discover local places and try favorite foods (and beers!) recommended in a part of the country we had never visited before. We saw lots of deer. Cute, yes, but unfortunately there were quite a few that hadn’t made it in their attempts to cross the roads that wound through the dense forests in the area. Made for a somewhat tense feeling as we were driving the scenic roads. Of interest these days, we found regular gas for $4.99/gallon just about everywhere we went. I had met Greg Halverson several years ago when he was visiting the Valley and he came out to one of our region’s breakfast gatherings. In our association and collaborations since then I have come to respect his leadership and “get it done” style in his position as both National Driving Tour Chair and Parade Driving Tour Chair. It was a pleasure to work as his assistant to ensure the Parade tours went off with virtually no issues, despite challenges. It’s not too early to start planning for Parade 2023, which will be closer to home in Palm Springs. We are looking forward to the June 2023 date, when we will be driving a Porsche!

LET THE SUNSHINE IN STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER

W

e’re into summer car show season now. That time of year when all those rolling objects of desire seem to emerge out of rabbit holes to meet, at least for a day, the warmth of the sun and our admiring eyeballs.

it was, the most perfect fence I had ever seen. And it went on, and on, and on, until we got to the timber-arched entrance to the Double RL Ranch. That’s what it said. Then the fence went on and on, again.

I wander the fields, ogling the moving works of art. And, often, my thoughts turn to, when it comes to car collecting, what would I do? If I had virtually unlimited funds to play with?

According to Autoweek, Ralph really likes to exercise his collection on the roads around the ranch. Okay, let’s pause again, on that sentence. Ponder the idea of tootling along, rounding a corner in southwest Colorado, and just like that, his 918 rips by and disappears, that fast, with nothing left but the exhaust music.

Sure, I could make a list of my favorites. I could even compare my choices with fellow wannabe collectors, and argue over what should be included, and what shouldn’t. I could concentrate on race cars, or Porsches, or Porsche race cars. Whatever I want. After all, it’s my money, and the rest be damned. Right? I like Jay Leno’s line, “I’m doing what you would do, if you were me.” And “This is what you do, if you have more money than brains.” Uh, I wish it was that simple. Take Ralph Lauren. I have a bit of an affinity for Ralph. He grew up in The Bronx, a son of immigrants from Eastern Europe, like both my parents. Ralph’s birth name is Ralph Lifshitz. He started by designing and selling men’s ties, deliberately wider than the style at the time. They were a hit. And the rest is history. Autoweek profiled Ralph a few years ago, and recently re-ran the piece. They talked with him, and toured part of his collection, sequestered in a nondescript warehouse, somewhere in upper Westchester County, NY, probably not far from his compound in Bedford. The gist is that Ralph doesn’t like to get his hands dirty. He has a team to do that for him. And that squalid barn belies what lies inside, where each moving jewel is perched on a low platform against a stark white background. Each gem, we learn, is road-registered and just begging to start up for a spin. Ralph is a driver. And he has at his disposal a … ok, let’s do the Porsches first, an RSK, a 550 Spyder, a Carrera GT and two, that’s right, two 918 Spyders. Although I believe there are a 930 Turbo and at least one Ruf as well. Jaguars. A D-Type that ran at Le Mans, an XKSS, an XK120. A Blower Bentley that also ran at Le Mans. Two Mercedes-Benz 300SLs, a Gullwing and a Roadster. The “Count Trossi” SSK. McLarens ... an F1 LM, another F1, a P1. According to the article, the cars get shipped around the country as the Lauren family follows the seasons to their various abodes. There’s the house in Montauk – a friend tells me that, in years past, Ralph would drive something from the collection to dinner at the East Hampton edition of The Palm on Sunday nights. Apparently, it became a tradition. Ralph also has a ranch outside Montrose, CO. I know, I passed it once, on a bus from Telluride to the Montrose airport, when the ski resort’s airport got fogged in. We rounded a corner and there

30

Ralph’s number one priority, says Autoweek, is the car must be beautiful. Well, yeah. Second, he says, “It has to have the engineering to back up its looks…. I saw them as moving art. I saw it long before most people did.” And racing provenance doesn’t hurt. And those collectors, looking for financial return? “That’s a different guy,” Ralph says. “That’s not the guy that loves cars – that’s an investor.” Ralph doesn’t like the color red on cars. Except … yeah, well, you know what’s coming. A 250 GTO, a 250 Testa Rossa, a 250 GT Spyder California, a 250 LM, a 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder. There are more red cars in the collection. I’m just running out of space. And out of breath. What’s my favorite? Please. What’s the collection worth? Double please. What a collection. What a life. Ralph wins. Wins what you ask? I don’t know. All I do know is the summer sun is shining. On him. Editor’s Note: Who is Danielle Badler? D

espite the title, only one chapter (of 16) deals expressly with tips and tricks of how to be a successful barn finder. The rest of the book consists of stories and anecdotes of barn finding. There is Porsche content in this book because it starts out with the story of a thirteen year old McKeel Hagerty and the ‘67 Porsche 911S he and his father dragged out of two snow banks, one winter. There are two brief mentions of cruising in a 356, and a picture of a 912 in a pasture. Other than that though, this book deals with the barn finding process as much as with specific finds. When the process is told as it is in this book, with specific examples of hard earned practical experience, it makes for a very interesting read. It is more of an anthology of anecdotes (numerous other individuals have articles included) than a how-to book, though the how is clearly derivable from the experiences, good and bad, related in these pages. The very readable and sometimes fascinating stories are more about the hunts than the results. There are a few ‘side bars’ inserted into the text which tell specifics about specific cars and their finding. The Prologue explains the relationship between this book, the Barn Find Hunter TV series and Hagerty Group, LLC. To some degree, this book appears to be a printed version of The Barn Find Hunter TV show. Having never watched that show, this reviewer cannot attest to the similarities or differences between the show and the book. Perhaps the meat or heart of Secrets of the Barn Find Hunter is Chapter 4, Top 25 Barn Finding Pro Tips.

These tips are presented as interesting first-person anecdotes illustrating the value of the tip. Like everything else in the book, the anecdotes are short, concise and self-contained. They make for interesting and engaging reading whenever a dull moment presents itself. Like the other books by Tom Cotton published by Motorbooks (The Cobra in the Barn, The Corvette in the Barn, etc.), this is a book with no real plot, no characters to keep track of. It presents a number of short self-contained articles, mostly about 2 minutes worth of reading. The only constant theme is finding old cars, mostly “Detroit Iron”, and their stories. A variety of authors tell a variety of stories, all presented an a very readable, first-person, chatty style. Dealing as it does with several people who search out old cars, and with the people who own them, it is almost as much a book about people as it is about cars. There are lots of pictures, lots of white space and bright colorful graphic accents. It is a cheerful book, mentally and visually. It is readable, informative, and most of all, entertaining. Secrets of the Barn Find Hunter by Tom Cotter, published April 2022 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA. is hardbound with a photographic cover and contains 208, 7

x 9 inch matte pages. There are 120 photographs and decent index. By the time you read this, it should be available for $30.00 from your favorite book seller (ask for it), or from QuartoKnows.com. .

Making the Old 914 Look Like New Underneath

L

ast month’s article left off with disassembling the rear suspension and diving into stripping the undercoating and paint off the rear underside of my 914 since all the parts for reassembly had arrived. It all started out so simple, my objective was to just remove the rubberized undercoating and old factory seam sealer, prospect for rust and do the cosmetic work I couldn’t do 30 years ago because of a lack of time and working on jack stands. At first, I was just going to just refresh the black rubberized undercoating applied by the body shop with fresh Wurth High Build Under seal. After inspiration from some detailed period photos of 914s on the Karmann assembly line and others of the underside of pristine survivor 914s on Bring-a-Trailer, the urge to make the underside look like how it would have come from the factory if painted red took hold.

STORY and PHOTOS BY DARRYL DEPPE, Pacific Northwest PCA Region CONTRIBUTED BY DENNIS ROOD

I had to keep reminding myself that the mission here was to get the car ready for a new engine and start breaking it in as soon as I could get it in the car. The wheel alignment was perfect so I wanted to avoid removing the rear trailing arms if the bushings looked good and avoid having to do an expensive 4-wheel alignment. There was also that huge risk of opening a can of worms by removing the brackets from the rear suspension console and breaking off the bolts or captive nuts which is a common theme I read about online. I did want to swap out the sketchy 5-bolt Fuchs conversion drilled 4-bolt rear wheel hubs that were the only choice 30 years ago and replace them with a recently developed, properly reinforced 5-lug hubs which would also require installing new rear wheel bearings. That opened the opportunity to do a thorough strip to bare metal and repaint of the naked rear trailing arms while still mounted on the car. I also wanted to upgrade the rear springs from the base model 1.8-liter 8.5 mm thick / 80 lb. spring rate to the sport 2.0-liter 11 mm thick / 100 lb. spring rate ones which I had sitting in my used parts stash from a junk yard harvest years ago. Installing new Bilstein shocks front and rear were another one of my goals. Lastly was installing a set of factory option front and rear sway bars, the combination of all the upgrades will totally change the handling of the car. Combined with the torque and horsepower upgrades I’m having Jack Morris make to the engine should really make a nimble and fun to drive 914. Stripping undercoating and paint off the bottom of a car is about as dirty and unglamorous of a task as I could imagine. I called it “working in a coal mine” because at the end of each day I emerged from the underside of the car looking like those old photographs of 19th century Welsh coal miners. The first step was to thoroughly clean everything with mineral spirits using a pneumatic siphon spray wand and a variety of soft bristle brushes. Even with my best efforts to catch the runoff with tarps and catch basins on the floor, both me and the shop floor was a total mess. The mineral spirits did a great job of making the rubberized undercoating brittle so it could be easily scraped or wire brushed off exposing the Marathon Blue Metallic paint that originally came on the car. Removing the paint was done with Aircraft Paint Stripper and wire brush wheels on my electric drill and Dremel tool. I also welded in the new rear sway bar mounts at that time since the mounting points were prepped for welding in the process. Once everything was stripped down to bare metal, the new paint started with an ample coat of SEM Self-Etching Primer. After allowing the primer to cure for a couple days I scuffed the surfaces with 320-grit Scotch-Brite pads and wiped everything down with a wax & grease remover solvent. The trailing arms were masked off and painted with rattle can Dupli-Color High Temperature Engine Enamel in Continued on page 36

a semi-gloss black as original and allowed to cure for several days. Once the semi-gloss black components had cured and hardened, I carefully masked them off and painted the remaining underside of the car in a low VOC single-stage enamel that had been mixed to match the Mazda Sunrise Red paint code by my buddy who owns a body shop. It pays to build relationships with people who do this stuff professionally, not only for good advice but also access to the latest products I’m not aware of and can’t get from my over-the-counter or internet sources. I used a favorite small siphon touch-up paint gun (called a “jab gun” in the industry) after my buddy thinned and filtered the paint so all I had to do was pour it from a plastic jug into my paint gun. My shop ceiling fan provided a good down draft, yet I did get a little over spray on my shop floor beyond the tarps I had laid down, luckily, I had covered everything important with plastic drop cloths. I was worried that my progress was stalled waiting for a new vapor honing cabinet I ordered in early November before I could start restoring the suspension parts for reassembly. Like some kind of just-in-time miracle, the new cabinet showed up, I set it up and immediately put it to use stripping the rust and paint off the brake and suspension parts. Vapor honing is pretty amazing, it has all the good benefits of glass bead blasting but without the dust and since the glass beads are cushioned by a water slurry, they don’t disintegrate and last for months. I started with aggressive 80-grit glass beads and was quite amazed at how the vapor honed parts emerged from the cabinet looking almost polished. That will be great on aluminum or magnesium parts that don’t get painted, but on these steel parts, further surface prep was required so paint would stick. I gave all the surfaces a good scuffing with a fine wire brush wheel on my drill press before painting. I used the same Dupli-Color engine enamel on the black parts and Eastwood’s Golden Cad 3-step paint system to simulate cadmium plating on the wheel bearing retainers and tow loop. Reassembly with new and restored parts is the pay-off for all those dirty “coal mine” hours and I had it ready for wheels and back on the ground in a couple days. Now the bridge jack that held up the rear of the car from the engine mount pods has been slid away and I have access to the lower engine compartment ahead of them. I’ve just finished with the stripping the front bulkhead and engine mount pods to bare metal and should have it all painted within a few days. Then it’s time to install the rear sway bar and all the new brake lines, parking brake cables, transaxle and motor mounts before rotating the car on the 4-post lift and repeating the restoration process with the front end. Jack Morris informed me that he’s running into supply chain issues on some of the parts for the engine rebuild so I’m actually feeling less stress about being done with my part on time. Looks like spring might be optimistic at this point but breaking in a new engine is an excellent way to spend the warm and dry summer months!

Editor’s Note: Thank you Darryl for sharing your 914 restoration.
