s I write this we have just finished a busy first week in April. Tuesday started off with a Board of Directors meeting, Wednesday the April monthly meeting at Chandler Porsche drew a sell out crowd of 120, Saturday 95 attended the New Members Day at the Farm at South Mountain, and on Sunday the Swap Meet and Detail Clinic was held. As you can tell, the Arizona Region offers numerous activities. Be sure and check the AZPCA website calendar of events for club activities. Monthly meetings, Porsches and Pancakes, Sunday Drives and several tours are on the agenda. The Arizona Region is still in need of a Social Chair. This position can easily be split amongst a couple of individuals. The social chair fills an important role by selecting a mix of social events that are responsive to the needs and interests of the Region’s membership. Those activities are then coordinated with the Board of Directors. Please step up and fill this role by contacting any Board Member.

Time marches on and the 2018 elections are just around the corner. At the April Board of Directors meeting, Rook Younger was selected as the 2018 election-nominating committee chair. I encourage each of you to become further involved with your club and contact Rook to put your name forward as a potential club officer. Rook’s contact information is found on the club website HOME page under ABOUT, then scroll down to Arizona Region Board. The same information is found in Going Places near the back page under Arizona Region Board. Bob Frith and Jim Borowske have been working diligently on Flight 40 for the past couple of months. They are planning a terrific 40th anniversary event. Details will be passed on as they become available and registration will be opening later this summer. Stay cool and we will see you at an upcoming event.
Need to Order New Name Badges?
Send a personal check for $15 made payable to PCA Arizona Region per badge to: Betsy Andrade 2735 S. Spruce Mesa, AZ 85210 Include exact spelling with your order OR email Betsy the details: betsy7890@earthlink.net Badge orders are placed at the end of each month, and the engraver returns them in about two weeks. They will then be mailed to you. If you need your badge faster, this can be done for $20 per badge, following the same directions as above. Betsy can also be reached by text or voicemail at: 602-550-1212

Alpine Tour XVII June 9 – 11, 2017 The Seventeenth (!) Annual AZPCA Alpine Tour to the White Mountains is June 9-10-11. The Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge is our destination in Alpine, Arizona. Make your room reservations by calling the lodge directly: 928-339-4319. Tell them you are with the Porsche Club-Arizona Region. You will need a room for June 9-10.
Our itinerary is different from past Alpine Tours: Friday, we will drive up the Beeline Hwy to Payson, then head east on AZ-260 toward Show Low and Pinetop. Before reaching Eager/Springerville we'll take the beautiful, fun route by Sunrise Park Ski area and Big Lake, to Alpine. Saturday, we will take the spectacular drive south on highway 191 to Morenci and Clifton, looping back to Alpine via Highway 180 in New Mexico, another great driving experience for your Porsche. Bring your favorite hors d’oeuvres to share with your PCA friends at our social gatherings on Friday and Saturday. The Tal-Wi-Wi frequently sells out, as it has for this popular weekend event in the past. Details for this event are on the event page on the club website, az.pca.org. Be sure to RSVP using the link on the event page, and make your reservations soon at the Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge.

ope you are all enjoying the summer and participating in some of the awesome events that have been planned. We are looking forward to the Durango Trip in August and already made our reservations to ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad roundtrip! Don’t forget to sign up for Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Chicago Cubs game at Chase Field on Saturday, August 12th. In case you didn’t see or hear the news, Porsche tied with Lexus for most reliable cars. This according to a 2017 vehicle dependability study conducted by J.D. Powers. You can find the entire article at www.jdpower.com/press-releases/2017vehicle-dependability-study. Lucky for Mark and I that we have one of each. I want to acknowledge some of our loyal, long-time members celebrating AZPCA anniversaries this month: 32 Years John and William Caron 20 Years Dean and Elaine Lewellen David and Kristine Reid

2017 968 West Coast Gathering June 23-25, 2017 There will be a gathering of 968 owners this summer in scenic Mendocino, CA on the N. CA coast! Think U S 1 coast highway and Redwoods! Not too far off of Highway 101, Mendocino is a funky little seaside town that will be a great base for scenic drives, social time with fellow 968’ers and wine tasting! The base hotel is the Hill House Inn (www.hillhouseinn.com) with discount rates of $139/night. There are plenty of higher-priced boutique hotels/inns/B&Bs and just up the road in Ft. Bragg are some lower-priced lodging to suit all pocketbooks and tastes. Make your reservations soon to check-in on Friday, June 23rd and check-out on Monday, June 26th. Ask for the “Porsche 968” special rates. For more details and to let me know you are coming, contact me at bob911@cableone.net!

DURANGO TRIP August 20 - 23, 2017 News flash -- August is hot in the Valley of the Sun! Let’s get outta town and head for the mountains -- the Rocky Mountains, that is! The beautiful region around Durango offers lots to do, including one of the most beautiful drives you will ever experience, in the San Juan Mountains in Southern Colorado. If you have not ridden the narrow gauge railway from Durango to Silverton, it is a must-do. Or tour Mesa Verde National Park, the largest archaeological preserve in the U.S., featuring the largest cliff dwelling in North America. There are lots of other things to do in Durango, so whatever your pleasure, you will be able to enjoy it on this trip. Our headquarter’s hotel is the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Durango, where they have extended a special group rate to our club. Located on the Animas river, the DoubleTree is within walking distance of the Durango & Silverton Railway Station and all the restaurants, shops, and historic charm to be found in downtown Durango. SUNDAY Drive to Durango Social gathering at the DoubleTree MONDAY Durango-Silverton RR -or- Mesa Verde National Park -or- explore the the many attractions and activities in and around Durango Social gathering at DoubleTree TUESDAY Spectacular Drive over “Million Dollar Highway” Lunch in Telluride Social gathering at DoubleTree Group Dinner WEDNESDAY Return to the Valley
Sign up for this trip by going to the AZ.PCA.ORG website and using the link on the Event page using the link on the, which will take you to MotorsportReg. Make your reservations at the DoubleTree Hotel Durango by July 26th. You will need a room for August 20-21-22 (checkout on Aug. 23). Use PCG for the group code, but check AAA, Senior, and other rates, as those rates may save you a few dollars more than our group rate. Our group rates start at $194/night + taxes & fees for a room with city view; $204 for a river view room. If you prefer to make your room reservations by phone you may call 970-259-6580. Tell them you are with the Porsche Club, but again, ask about the AAA, Senior, or other rates if you qualify; one of those may get you a better rate. If you wish to ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Silverton make your reservations early: http://www.durangotrain.com/. Make your train reservation for Monday, August 21st. I recommend the train/bus itinerary, but you can take the train both ways; that is up to you! If you have questions, please contact Rook Younger at pastpresident@az.pca.org

AUTOCROSS #7 RESULTS by Rick Althouse and Kim Kemper photo by Jan Nyquist
H
ey Autocrossers; Here are the results from the autocross on Saturday, March 25th. The chart below is raw times, add 2 seconds for each cone shown with your time. The second chart on the right is everyone's best time sorted from the fastest down. Congratulations to Don Lameyer for setting the fastest time of the day! The morning started out on the chilly side as the sun was obstructed by clouds. Thanks to Kim and David Fisher, the course was set up on Friday and all that really needed to be done on the course was to chalk the cone boxes. Dave Munsey loaded all of the timing and safety gear on the cart and hauled everything out of the storage shed. We established the waiver station and assignment, then set up the tables, connected the timing sensors and large display, set out all of the clipboards with registration forms, work assignments and track maps.

AZPCA “STORMS” LAS VEGAS by Bob and Nancy Tomlin
T
his years Las Vegas run was a resounding success! Thirtytwo AZPCA members and guests drove their 17 Porsches north to meet the Las Vegas region, which kindly arranged several very enjoyable events. Lots of effort went into planning this trip and it showed! Day 1 – On Thursday morning, March 30th, event organizers Bob and Cheryl Woodwell, gathered us for breakfast and drivers meeting at the First Watch and provided us with route instructions. We headed north in perfect weather, and after a ‘bio break’ in Wickenburg, we stopped for lunch at the popular ‘In and Out’ Burger in Kingman. As we headed north across the desert we encountered progressively stronger winds up to 80mph. We appreciated our Carrera’s slippery shape! By the time we approached Las Vegas, a major dust storm was in progress, and we were relieved to reach our hotel, the ‘M’ Resort in Henderson, without incident. The ‘M’ Resort, which was to be our base for the next few days, provided very comfortable accommodations, good restaurants, and secure convenient parking for our Porsches. That evening we met with members and co-organizers from the Las Vegas region for cocktails and dinner at the hotel. We received instructions for the planned events for the following day and socialized with our fellow PCA friends. Day 2 – Following breakfast the next morning, we met in the hotel parking lot and after a drivers meeting headed north, skirting the strip to the mountainous Red Rocks Park, where we stopped for a scenic photo op. We then drove around the mountains toward Pahrump, and the Spring Mountain Motor Sports Park. This event was arranged by Las Vegas region member Salomon Braun, who has a membership in the Park, and who kindly arranged for our club to experience this excellent facility. Rather than trying to adequately describe it, you can look on their website SpringMountainMotorsports.com for more information. We signed waivers, received descriptive literature and advice from one of driving instructors, who led us on to the race track for several exciting “parade” laps. Everyone was thrilled and no one disgraced himself or herself. Afterwards, we met for lunch in the beautiful clubhouse, and watched some of the racing that was in progress from the clubhouse-viewing tower. This is a really cool and complete racing facility. We said our goodbyes to Spring Mountain, and the group proceeded to the Pahrump Valley Winery. Gretchen, one of the owners gave us a lovely tour of the vineyards and one of the facilities where they bottle the wines. We enjoyed a little wine tasting, and the whole wine making process before heading back to our hotel. During the visit to Pahrump area Cheryl entertained us with a
local story and a job opportunity she suggested (tongue in cheek I am sure) that she might want to consider? That evening, the Las Vegas region hosted a combined region dinner social at a local auto restoration company called Atomic Motors. A wonderful dinner of ‘street tacos’ and trimmings was served among many of the restored cars that were on display. The owners, Cat and Bill Biler, gave us a tour of their impressive facility. It gave us another excellent chance to socialize and meet with the friendly members of the Las Vegas region. Day 3 – The Gimmick Rally! Las Vegas region member, Scott Hatcher had planned a wonderful Gimmick Rally, mostly centered on the attractive town of Summerlin, where we congregated in one of the beautiful city parks. This event provided a workout for the navigators and an interesting tour of an area of Las Vegas that we had not visited before. We not only had to follow the exact route, but spot items along the route and answer general Porsche and Nevada/Arizona state questions. This was to balance the 3 awards given to members of both of the regions. The conclusion of event was at the salubrious Paiute Indian Reservation Golf Club, where we met for lunch and the awards presentation. Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas graciously provided the prizes to the exhausted, but happy contestants. Relationship counseling and divorce lawyers were available at the end of rally (LOL). The winners were as follows: AZ Region – 1st place – Alan Smith and Marshall Wallace 2nd place – Amy and Bill Kremer 3rd place – Bob and Cheryl Woodwell ( who picked the tie breaking number ) LV Region – 1st place - To Be Announced 2nd place - To Be Announced 3rd place - To Be Announced Some members returned to Phoenix after the rally, while others stayed over Saturday night returning to Phoenix on Sunday. Bob and Cheryl, Moe Scharhorn and Jane Perlman also attended the Las Vegas member breakfast and quarterly meeting at the Red Rocks Country Club before heading back to the valley. They reported that this was a lovely and delicious event. We hope you will plan to join us next year! Thank you Bob and Cheryl for a wonderful fun tour. This was one of the best! And thank you to our photographers, Jan and Monyette Nyquist and Cheryl Woodwell. (Check out all the photos at AZ.PCA.ORG). And a big thank you to the Las Vegas region members, our very hospitable co-hosts, and especially President Mike Dugan, Salomon Braun, Scott Hatcher and their lovely wives plus all of their members that joined us on the many entertaining events. EXPERIENCING THE PORSCHE EXPERIENCE CENTER LOS ANGELES by Chas Wirken
I
confess to cheating on the Porsche Club of America, but you’ll understand. You see, another organization provided the opportunity to visit the Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles for what was reportedly its first banquet event. On Saturday, January 21, 2017, the Porsche Owners Club held its annual awards banquet at the PEC LA. As a member of POC, a Southern California-based Porsche racing club I also race with, my heart “raced” at the chance to see the new facility.
Porsche Experience Center LA is, in So-Cal terms, Disneyland for Porschephiles. The 53-acre facility offers a driver development track with multiple challenges, an off-road course, state-ofthe-art driving simulators, a fully stocked Porsche boutique, a design center to option out your next new Porsche, event space, conference rooms, and two dining options; The Speedster Café and Restaurant 917.
Before dinner, I toured the PMNA side of the glass where a number of historic racecars are undergoing restoration for the Porsche Museum. Also present was a new GT3 Cup car being readied for delivery (alas, not to me). And several racecar engines sat in various stages of rebuilding. I also met Jens
Walther, the President & CEO of PMNA, who interviewed me last year before approving my purchase of a 2016 Cayman GT4 Clubsport racecar. While waiting for dinner to be served, quests were treated to a taste of the track. Hot laps were offered in a fleet of Porsches. Be prepared when it’s your turn to drive the track, it is tight.
But wait, there’s more. Porsche Experience Center LA is also home to Porsche Motorsports North America. Its gleaming white and spotless workspace is visible through the glass wall of the large banquet room.
Whatever your interest in Porsches, the Porsche Experience Center LA is a must see.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region
PORSCHE BOXSTER AND CAYMAN, THE COMPLETE STORY by Johnny Tipler PORSCHE Boxster and Cayman, the complete story, by Johnny Tipler, published 2016 by Crowood Press, Ramsbury, Marlborough, UK.
M
ore than most Boxster books, this provides great homage, in pictures and text, to the 4-cyl, air cooled Spyders. The index lists 9 references to the 550 Spyder, 18 to the 718 Spyder, 5 to the 904, as compared with only 4 references to the 718 Boxster. Coverage of the Boxster and Cayman is quite complete from the Boxster 'concept' of the 1993 Detroit Motor Show through the Boxster Spyder and the Cayman GT4, marking the end of the 6-cylinder era for these cars. The “Introduction” provides a very comprehensive summary of the genesis and evolution of the Boxster and Cayman models. Chapter 1 “Antecedents”, deals with the original Spyders, the 910 racer and the 914. Chapters 2-7 deal with the details of the models and the year by year changes, and includes (in Chapter 2) an extensive interview with Harm Lagaaij, Porsche's Head of Design during the gestation of the Boxster. Chapters 8 & 9 deal with driving and racing/modifying respectively. The Cayman is given incidental mention in the appropriate Boxster year-model chapters, then full coverage in the Caymanspecific Chapter 7. PORSCHE Boxster and Cayman is profusely illustrated. Some pictures look strange because the cars are right hand drive, or are on the 'wrong' side of the road. The arch typical twisty drive in this book is 'The Snake' not 'The Tail of The Dragon'. True, the 'Corkscrew' at Laguna Seca and 'The Downhill' at Lime Rock are mentioned as a prototypes for 'The Mouse Trap' at Blister Berg (a track that is described in detail), but most of the track references are meaningless to Americans.
The narrative gives complete description of the evolution of Boxster (and Cayman) design, plus performance factors and aesthetic considerations. The introduction of various options is discussed as well as when some of them became standard. For the less literary inclined there are very comprehensive specification tables inserted in the appropriate places in the text. These tables, provided for every generation and model (and indeed there are many), are gold mines of information for anyone interested in these cars. The chapter “Driving the Boxster and Cayman” is almost more about the local(s) and the road(s) than about the car, its performance and handling, or cockpit conveniences. It is still interesting to read, and gushingly enthusiastic about traveling in a Boxster. Interestingly, this chapter includes something of a comparison test with a 2005 Harley-Davidson 'V'-Rod', and a comprehensive race report of the 2014 24 Hours of Nürburgring! Travel references to 'Route 500' and 'A8' are unfamiliar though acceptable, but the section titled “Rocky Mountain Highs” is somewhat off-putting when it becomes clear that the subject is a 500 mile loop drive in Scotland. The “Competition and Modification” chapter is mostly about companies in UK (and RUF in Germany) that perform modifications or provide aftermarket 'upgrades', but the concepts described are applicable whomever the supplier of components. PORSCHE Boxster and Cayman does indeed provide a very complete story of the 6 cylinder Boxsters and Caymans, and contains 192, 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages with many photos and a comprehensive index. It is formatted to be an interesting read as well as an efficient reference book. A must for any dedicated Boxster/Cayman enthusiast, owner or not. It might be available for $44.95 from your favorite book seller (ask for it), or from http://www.amazon.com/books

Social Media Live Demo! Were You There? by Jan Mackulak
I
finally got to do a quick live demo at Porsche Chandler back in April! I know we hit 120 plus people with that monthly meeting, and the feedback was very positive. I wish our meeting sound speakers could have picked up the computer’s video sound from the “Porsche Top 5” video that I showed from Twitter…so next time we promise!
So if you’ve been reluctant to join also, ask me or someone else who is “app-savy” to help you set up an account and show you the basics. Its really easy and fun to see this wonderful “live” world of Porsche! Ask me next time who I found on Facebook from my past and I may convince you to join the Social Media World!
After the last meeting, one of our members said he was finally succombing to “peer-pressure” at work and home and was going to join a Social Media app – but which one should he start with? After a little bit of discussion, we decided Facebook was the best place for him to start.
As always, search on “AZPCA” in your computer’s or cell phone’s browser to find most of our social media venues, type in the underlined url address, launch the app, or just do the easiest thing - find all 7 social media buttons at az.pca.org !

April 5, 2017. Meeting Place: Porsche Chandler. There were 120 members registered for this meeting. If you were unable to attend the April monthly meeting at Chandler Porsche you missed out. As many of you saw the event closed early as we reached the 120-person limit. Lisa, Richard and their employees went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The Arizona Region is very fortunate to have Chandler Porsche as a major sponsor. Over the past 15 years the Arizona Region has been the recipient of the Zone 8 Region of the year 4 times, 2001, 2009, 2011 and 2016. In attendance last evening were five Past Presidents from that time frame. Ken Steele Dale Willis Mark Dreher Dwane Stewart Rook Younger

Our Bylaws direct the Board of Directors to establish an upcoming election committee by May 1. Historically the recent Past President has chaired the nominating committee. For the 2018 election cycle Rook Younger will chair the committee. At the meeting two volunteers stepped up to help, Richard Bookspan and Kyle Franko. Both are AZPCA Sponsors! Angela Manente our Going Places Editor provided us with an update and requested that everyone submit articles for the newsletter. Alma Stewart is the April Writer’s Drawing Winner for her story “Zone 8 Awards Banquet”. Winners will now receive a $24.00 credit on Motorsportreg good for 1 year on any AZPCA activity. Keep those articles coming! You may be the next drawing winner. Jan Mackulak then gave a live demonstration of the 7 different social media site links found in the upper left corner of the http://az.pca.org website. Be sure and have a look at the great information found on those sites. Bob Woodwell then reviewed the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix event April 29.
