My Other Cars are Porsches...
I
t looks like summer is coming soon. Normally our club winds down much of its activities in the hotter months, however, this year we do have a lot going on this summer. Cynthia Giacchetti and I are organizing a summer drive up to Camp Sunrise and Sidekick summer camp just to visit these kids with cancer and their siblings. It will be in July. One of our ongoing efforts will be to get information on the calendar as much in advance as we can so that you can plan your participation. Also know that the Board is well-aware how disappointing it is to find an event full. We will do our best to make events accommodate as many members as possible but please be aware that sometimes this is out of our control. The best way to avoid missing out on an event is to sign up early, not at the last minute like many of us. That being said, mark your calendars for our 60th Anniversary of becoming a PCA Region. While the official date of incorporation was February 15, 1959, we will be celebrating this milestone on November 24th at the Phoenix Art Museum, where there will be an exhibit called Legends of Speed. We will be able to accommodate up to 400 people at this event but don’t wait until the last minute to sign up. Registration should be open in a few months once more details are worked out. I just finished running our first ever Off-Road Tour for Cayennes and Macans. It was a great event and I believe some people were surprised to learn what their cars could do. Check out the photos on our website. PCA National has encouraged regions to try to run these events and we are one of the first. Based on the success we will do it again in the fall. I plan to submit a writeup to PCA National and Panorama on what we learned from this event. Your Board of Directors hold monthly meetings, usually the third Monday of the month, as shown on our website calendar. Any member is welcome to attend; however, we ask that you contact me in advance so that we will have room for you. Kelly and I have noted that there have been a lot of requests for information about our finances. Over the years the club has presented this information in many ways, more recently it has been presented at our November meeting, along with elections. I and the Board do not think it is a great idea to put this information either on our website or newsletter; however, in the past the finances were discussed regularly at the monthly meetings. I am happy to return to this method We will also be happy to provide a copy of our financial summary to any member who requests it. Also please remember that the officers of this club are all volunteers, who gain nothing financially from the large effort they put into running the club for the rest of you. Please respect and acknowledge their efforts and know that we all welcome advice and requests. However, one of the best ways to get the club to do something is to VOLUNTEER to help. ‘Nuff said. Drive safely!

Porsches and Pancakes Saturday, May 18, 2019 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Rock Springs Café 35900 Old Black Canyon Hwy Black Canyon City, AZ 85324 The last Porsches and Pancakes event of the season will be held Saturday, May 18th. It may seem more like a “Drive and Dine” than just breakfast. We will be going to Rock Springs Café, which is north on the I-17. Keep driving north until you feel like you are nearly half way to Flagstaff and at Exit #242. You will see a sign to Rock Springs. Exit and drive over the freeway to the access road on the west side. You can see the Café from there. Find a parking spot. They are all dirt so you might want to reconsider bringing that Concours car. Breakfast will be buffet style with an assortment of breakfast foods along with coffee, tea and orange juice. Price will be $19.00 ($16.00 plus a $3.00 tip) per person and we will pay before going through the buffet line. Seating is limited to 60 people. After eating, there are little shops to visit, a farmers market and, of course, a visit to the bakery to find a pie or other goody to take home with you. Registration is required! Flagstaff Overnighter/Lowell Observatory July 27 - 28, 2019 - Saturday-Sunday It’s mid-summer, and it’s time to flee the hot desert and head to the cool temps of Northern Arizona. So we’ve planned an overnighter to Flagstaff, featuring a visit to the renowned Lowell Observatory. We will take an indirect route to Flag, heading up the Beeline Highway and passing through Payson on our way up the Mogollon Rim. The Rim Country is always scenic and it’s a beautiful drive along Lake Mary Road toward Flagstaff. On our arrival we will check in at the Drury Inn & Suites, adjacent to the campus of Northern Arizona University. After lunch we will head up Mars Hill overlooking the city, for a private group tour at the observatory. Several optional presentations are available after the tour, including viewing through the historic Clark 24,Refractor Telescope. Sunday will be on your own to enjoy the many sites and activities offered in and around Flagstaff, or you may choose to take the scenic route through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona on your way back to the Valley. The Lowell Observatory tour is limited to 50 people, so don’t hesitate -- reserve your spot early! ROOM RESERVATIONS AT THE DRURY INN & SUITES We have a group rate of $214+ tax for the night of 7/27. Salt River Canyon – Pinetop Drive Saturday, August 17, 2019 This is a drive we have not done for a while… Heading out from the East Valley through the mining towns of Superior and Globe, then enjoying the scenic and winding road through the Salt River Canyon. The route takes a turn past historic Fort Apache before passing through Whiteriver and winding up at Charlie Clark’s in Pinetop.

Mark and I just came back from attending PCA National’s Treffen event in Santa Barbara. We had a great time and are planning to attend the next one this fall in Vermont. Anyone interested in joining us? Make sure to sign up for the last Porsches and Pancakes of the season this month. It’s going to be at Rock Springs Cafe in Black Canyon. n Saturday, April 13, 2019, eighty Arizona Region PCA members and guests attended our fifth annual Porches and Pancakes breakfast at the elegant Ironwood Grille at the beautiful Anthem Country Club.
The weather was perfect and members enjoyed prepared to order omelets along with Crème Brulee French Toast, fresh fruit and strudel. The Egg Station preparation and buffet was outdoors under the covered patio while members were able to eat either indoors or out with an open patio setting. Breakfast beverages were included and a cash bar was available. Cars were lined up around the circular drive and made a spectacular presentation of members’ automobiles. Photos of each car and passengers were presented to each member making it a memorable occasion. A group photo with the Porsche emblem was also arranged. Our special thanks to members Frank and Maria Grimmelmann for again hosting this event at their Country Club and Richard Bernal for taking the photos.

T
his was Mark’s fourth PCA National Treffen (Lake Tahoe, Tamaya, Austin) and my third Treffen event.
We left Gold Canyon around 7:00 a.m. and formed a caravan with two other Arizona Region couples (Carol and Jerry Gambino, Marcia and Dennis Parle) for the drive to Santa Barbara. It was an uneventful drive! No tickets or car problems. We had a few bio/fuel breaks along the way and stopped for lunch at our favorite on the road restaurant, “In-N-Out Burger”, somewhere in California off I-10. As usual, the burgers, fries and shakes were great. On to Santa Barbara. It took longer than planned due to traffic and accidents on the 101 in California. Mark has very little patience when it comes to traffic. Are you surprised? We did arrive on time for hotel check-in at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. My pre-planning and pre-registration let us bypass the long lines at the front desk. I took advantage of the hotel’s electronic room key check–in option using my Smartphone. It worked like-acharm, saving us at least thirty to forty minutes. After a long drive, it was sooo nice to get to our room and relax. I selected a room by the pool, with a patio surrounded by green hedges and lush flowers. Very nice! It was now time to register for Treffen, pick up our goodie bag and enjoy the “Welcome” reception. In the goodie bag were two drink tokens along with two blue zip up jackets. We ran into San Diego Region members, Gayle and Gerritt Osborne, we met from last year’s wine tour and had a drink with them to catch up. Dinner was on our own. After being in the car most of the day, we walked to a nearby fish restaurant for dinner. Afterwards we retired for the evening. We had signed up for an early morning drive on Thursday. Thursday morning we were up bright and early to get some breakfast before we left for the “Solvang Tour” that was leaving at 8:00 a.m. The drive took us through Santa Ynez Valley wine country on CA-154, some back roads with twisties then onto CA-135, CA-246 to the “River Grill At the Alisal” for lunch. A wonderful barbeque buffet with beef brisket, chicken, beans, coleslaw and cookies was served on the patio. After lunch we drove through the Danish village of Solvang, which is known for its Danish style architecture. You notice I said, drove through! Of course we didn’t stop because there were no on the street parking spaces available and Mark wasn’t interested in using public parking lots off the main thoroughfare. Oh well, maybe another time.

I do have a few pictures other tour participants took. If it’s of any consolation, we did take the scenic route back to the hotel on the Pacific Coast Highway. Love the ocean. Tonight’s dinner was a Spanish theme held at the hotel. The paella and tres leches cake was outstanding. We also had entertainment by Spanish female dancers performing the “Fandango”. Very lively! Tomorrow we can sleep in because it is “Navigator’s Day Off” and our group event doesn’t leave until 10:00 a.m.

Friday was for me! I signed us up to go on the “Double Dolphin Cruise”. So excited to see dolphins, sea lions and maybe whales too. We were taken by bus to the boating dock and then boarded a 50-foot yacht. There were eighteen of us going on the cruise. As soon as we pulled away from the dock, we saw many lazy sea lions hanging out on a buoy. Next came the Bottlenose dolphins, jumping out of the water in tandem, behind and besides the boat. The best was let to come! You guessed it, we were treated to whale sightings. Three of the most awesome Humpback whales. They were blowing water out of their holes and diving down showing us their tail fluke. I tried to get some pictures with my phone but wasn’t very successful. This was a once in a lifetime experience. Also for me, the best event of Treffen. I would take this cruise again in a heartbeat! Tonight (Friday), Treffen hosted a wine (Fess Parker Wines) and cheese tasting social. We each received three tickets and a wine glass for tasting. I wasn’t very adventurous because I stuck with the Chardonnay, which was very good. The charcuterie board had a nice variety of cheese, meats and olives. Dinner was on our own and we went to an Italian restaurant, “Toma”, which was a mile walk from the hotel. We definitely needed the walk. Great dinner of rigatoni pasta with sausage sauce, rack of lamb and chocolate torte we shared for dessert, was over the top. Instead of walking back to the hotel, we decided to take our first Uber ride. It was just like taking a cab but without a meter! Wow! Whales

On the Road to Treffen Santa Barbara (continued)
Saturday morning, we decided not to do the driving tour of wine country, since it was going to cover some of the same roads we took on Thursday’s drive. Instead we took a morning walk before breakfast and then drove directly to the “Trilogy Monarch Club”, where the tour group was going to meet for lunch. We met some really nice members from other California regions and had an enjoyable lunch. We took the direct route back to the hotel so we would have some time to shower and relax before the closing dinner Tonight’s closing dinner theme was “Endless Summer” and the food was supposed to be barbeque. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what we expected and were a bit disappointed because dinner was nothing special compared to previous Treffen closing events. During the closing ceremony the Treffen locations for 2020 were announced. Drum roll please! The Spring Treffen, in late April, will be at the Broadmoor Hotel, Colorado Springs, Colorado and the Fall Treffen, in early September, will be at The Greenbrier Hotel, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Choose Carefully - Part 2
I
t’s not so much that I am an automotive journalist. I’ve checked, the pay isn’t so great. Or an auto- industry pundit, ditto about the pay part. No I think of myself as an observer of things automotive. More of an automotive chronicler about all things Porsche. A monthly column kinda guy that writes from the heart. Most of the time. But there are times when I would love to be that guy that gets the call from an automotive manufacturer— BIG hint here Porsche—and a voice says something pithy like “How do you feel about The Steffel Pass in Zandfortin or the lovely Isle of Marjorie in the Delfinium Islands? Think you might fancy a trip there? Oh, and we will throw in some cars for you to drive.” At this point, the writer is supposed to pause for a few seconds to leave the automotive marketing types hanging—like you’ll really turn them down—before saying very causally, “Let me check my calendar and see if those dates work.” Inside you are shouting, YES! I would cancel my wedding or try to delay the birth of my child to go there. And YES! I may even possibly be persuaded—definitely maybe—that I could squeeze in driving some fast cars too. (Oh, and I hear that they ply you with good food and very good drink. Lots of it.) So you deliberately slow down your brain and try to be uber cool and nonchalant and work your mouth very carefully to say each word S L O W L Y, so you don’t end up sounding like an idiot. B u t t h a t n e v e r w o r k s . Yo u ’ l l b l u r t o u t “YesIwouldlovetogotoZandfortinyespleasethankyouverymuch.” Or something that is probably very close to unintelligible. The suave auto-marketing types knows what your response will be, so he tells you to check your inbox, ‘cause the itinerary will be forthcoming. You hang up and start packing right away, even though the trip is five weeks out. You do want to be prepared after all. What does this have to do with a car company’s configurator? Well, I will get around to it - eventually. See the auto companies want the Journos to write glowingly about their new offerings. They pick beautiful places, take over high-star hotels and make those hardworking Journos sit through a mind numbing half hour to forty-five minutes of marketing speak before turning them loose in the car of the moment. But wait there’s more. They usually put every bell and whistle on the car to make sure that all the good stuff gets tested and written about. Problem is, when the writer is talking about this button here, that switch there or this sub-set of commands in the dark innards of the car’s performance capabilities, we are left lusting and wanting for things that we may not need or are too expensive to buy.

I mean I would love to listen to a gold-plated Bergfarb Grand Marquis sound system, but probably won’t pony for the seven large to buy it. And the micromium plated multi-faceted sport design exhaust at a mind numbing four big ones will probably not be one of the boxes I tick off. But the Journos? Man they love it. It’s pretty easy to turn a $60K car into a $80K (or at least $70K) car nowadays. And in Porsches’ case, a $100K car into a $150K car in a snap. Someday when I configure my 911, I may remember some writer with his hair on fire, going 120 MPH into a screaming long sweeper and talking about how the PDCC with Sport Chrono really sets the handling tone. But me, I will just opt for the PASM Sports Suspension at $890 and be done with it. I don’t mind if my eyeballs giggle on the road, I just want to take that corner at 125. Oh Baby. And on that exhaust note, see you all next time. Saturday Drive to Jerome

T
he Porsche Club of America, Arizona Region’s drive to Jerome was on a beautiful, spring Saturday morning.
There were over 20 Porsches gathered in the parking lot - a wide variety of Porsches, including different 911 generations (996, 997s...), Boxsters, Caymans, a beautiful Spyder and a sharp GT3 among others. After a quick drivers’ meeting with the participants, we were on our way. We split up into two groups of about 10 cars each. While there was heavy traffic on the I-17 North, as soon as we got off the highway on the Prescott exit, the traffic thinned and we were able to drive in a close formation. The winding road to Jerome is famous for the Mingus Mountain switchbacks, and spring is a perfect time of year to experience it. There were colorful wildflowers next to the road, and cattle and horses grazing, all creating a bucolic and picturesque landscape. While we were unable to drive as fast as some of our drivers and cars may have desired because of other cars, the switchbacks were still fun to drive and the view of Verde Valley was breathtaking. Along the way in Prescott Valley, our two groups had merged and when we pulled into the tiny, winding streets of Jerome, we made an impressive entrance, with many pedestrians taking pictures or videotaping our cars. We parked wherever we could (parking is limited in this small, steep mountain town, which only has 450 inhabitants), and then we set out to enjoy the town independently. My husband and I stopped in a small delicatessen and enjoyed a lovely breakfast and excellent coffee. After exploring the town, we had a relaxing lunch at a small restaurant, the Mine Cafe. Others in the group drove to Cottonwood and enjoyed some antiquing and great pizzas. While our trip was relatively short (9:00 a.m. till around until noon), it was a wonderful experience to drive together and bond with fellow Porsche lovers. To quote one of the car’s, “Arrivederci.”

AZPCA will be holding its 19th annual to Alpine Tour. Our drive up will be on U.S. Route 191,the Coronado Trail, which is 93 miles from Clifton to Alpine and it has been called one of the curviest roads in the United States. Friday, June 21- 7:00 AM - Meet for breakfast at IHOP , 10662 E Southern Ave., Mesa (Hwy 60 to Signal Butte, north to Southern). 8:00 AM – Drivers’ Meeting; Departing at 8:15 AM sharp. Will make a pit stop at McDonald’s in Globe. Planning a stop for lunch prior to reaching Morenci. Arrive in Alpine around 4:00 PM Evening Social Hour – 5:00 PM– Bring your own beverages and appetizer to share. Saturday, June 22- Morning drive to be determined and lunch to follow. SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM The sponsorship programs were designed to allow our current and new advertisers and sponsors a simple way to choose a program that will include; digital on-line published newsletter and internet exposure opportunities all for one simple investment. The sponsorship program has five tiers: Bronze - $250 includes one small website banner on the Events and Going Places digital magazine page of our website, rotating with other sponsors, and one eigth-page (3.5”x 2”) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication. Silver - $600 Includes one medium-sized website banner on the Events and Going Places digital magazine page of our website, rotating with other sponsors, and one quarter-page (3.5” x 4.75”) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication. Gold - $1200 Includes one medium-sized website ad on the main page of our website rotating with other sponsors, and one half-page (8” x 5”) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication. Titanium - $2500 Includes one large vertical ad on the front page of our website rotating with other sponsors and one full-page (8” x 10”)color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication. Platinum - $10,000. Includes one large vertical ad on the front page of our website, an embedded video, one full-color or grayscale, full-page (8” x 10”) ad inside the front cover in the Going Places publication. It is the responsibility for each sponsor to develop and design their unique promotional ads. Sponsors must submit their own artwork electronically for ads in gif, pdf, jpeg or swf (for website ads) formats. New sponsorships will run yearly, and investment will be pro-rated for any new sponsor who commits mid-year. All website ads will be viewed only by Arizona Porsche Club members and therefore will not be accessed until the member logs into the website. The acceptance and display of advertising in this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the advertiser or product by the Porsche Club of America, Arizona Region. Come Join AZPCA at Camp Sunrise
Sunday, July 14, 2019 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Let’s have some fun and put a lot of smiles on the faces of the kiddos at Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks. This is the summer camp for kids with cancer and their siblings which we have supported as a charity for many years. They are always very grateful for whatever they receive so let’s do something this summer. We’ll take a drive up to Payson on July 14th and maybe even pass the busses on our way as we stop for lunch. Once the kids have settled in, we’ll meet them at the camp for them to have a good time with all of us and our Porsches, whatever the model. Those of you who are willing to let the kids sit in your cars, beep the horns and take pictures, that would be great! Then we can have the boys and girls vote for their favorite car; the prettiest and of course the best sounding Porsche. Naturally, we can rev the engines. We will be charging a registration fee of $20.00 that will all go to the Camp. Other donations and gift cards are welcome. Questions?
