PRESIDENT’S NOTE

“Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.”

Henry David Thoreau

The desert is in bloom! Unfortunately, for some of us it is the itchy eye, sneezing allergy season.

Our track day events will be on hiatus for the summer. Thank you, Kim and Dan and all the volunteers, for another successful season.

There wasn't a driving tour on the planning calendar for May, until assistant Driving Tour Chair, Jim Bultema, in addition to his and Carole's monthly member meeting duties, organized a Saguaro Lake Drive and Desert Belle Boat Cruise on May 15th. Kenny Mitchel sent out an eblast and in a day the event reached capacity. Ang and I were distracted and made the waitlist. Looks like we missed the boat!

Dennis and Nancy Rood, our fall/winter Porsches and Pancakes organizers, head back north for the summer. Porsche and Pancakes will continue as Frank and Maria Grimmelmann take over organizing our P&P's. The next one is on May 18th at Ajo Al’s in Glendale. As always check the website Calendar and sign up.

Driving tours continue this summer: Angela and I are organizing the annual weekend Ken Steele Alpine Tour XXIV at the end of June, Rook and Debbie Younger have organized a midweek Snowbowl drive to Flagstaff for July and an August 7-day Durango-Telluride-Moab Tour.

Social Chair Abby Ercoline, has organized this year's AZPCA social "Day at the Ballpark" on July 14th. The club has really stepped it up this year with our own suite at Chase Field. The D'Backs are playing the Blue Jays. Check the website for details.

Andy Jorgenson, our Sponsorship Chair, brought a new sponsor to AZPCA: Dill Petroleum. They offer track side fuel pit stops.

Ang and I are off to PCA Treffen Wine Country in Sonoma. Ang was lucky and signed us up even though the site crashed and she had to log in multiple times. We were number 224!

Have a great month!

From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

Happy May to everyone! Once again we find ourselves waving off some of our regular club members who migrate north for the season and want to let you know that we will miss you and look forward to seeing you in the fall upon your return.

Focusing on spring renewal and moving into the warmth of the summer, it’s a great time and opportunity to remind our club members that there are many activities that are still happening with AZPCA!

There is a boat cruise, a Concours d’Elegance and two wonderful opportunities to truly sample some native food with both the Monthly Members meeting and a Porsche’s and Pancakes this month, both held at long-standing regional Mexican restaurants.

The Saguaro Lake Drive and Boat Cruise on May 15th is excellent timing to enjoy the warmer weather as well as the Lake and surrounding rock formations. Getting onto the Lake allows you to relax and see a totally different perspective from the water. It is very enjoyable and well worth the trip!

May also features a unique opportunity to spend time with our friends and family from the Mountain Region on a special Regional Social/Driving Tour. These special events are such a fabulous way to meet like-minded people and widen connections with our southwest regional clubs.

These exchanges that we host, and attend, allow our members and the club itself to growth and deepen relationships, learn about others and plan for even more exciting and engaging activities for our people! Our most important element of the club!

If springing forward is urging you into a time of renewal, organization or wanting to be more involved, please let us know! We are always looking to broaden the scope of volunteers who are working for our club members. Volunteering allows you to engage and really establish relationships within the club, gives back to the club community and refreshes ideas and creativity. We always need good people who are interested in helping.

Happy May to each of you!

Ku’ia kahele aka na’au ha’aha’a – (A Humble Person Walks Carefully So As Not To Hurt Others.)

hef Tony, the owner of Schmooze, in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale looks forward to welcoming AZPCA members back to another memorable brunch in his ‘Secret Garden” located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. Tony was the former owner/operator of such Valley staples as Bravo! Bistro, Bravo! Pizzeria, and Naya Mediterranean Cuisine.

After studying food, beverage, and hotel management at the Culinary School of Jordan he continued his education at the Culinary of the Sorbonne, Paris. He began his career in 1980 as sous-chef for King Hussein at the Royal Palace of Jordan. He prepared many styles of cuisine for state dinners, where guests included dignitaries and leaders from around the world. In 1985, he moved to the United States and became an American citizen. He was the banquet chef at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in the mid to late '80s, then moved temporarily to Hawaii to open the Westin Maui Resort. Tony then served as General Manager of Tomaso's restaurant, opening Tomaso's concepts in Del Coronado and Phoenix, Arizona. In 1996 he opened Bravo! Bistro and has been a chef-owner since that time. His belief is that fresh, slow food prepared properly appeals to people who know and enjoy quality cuisine.

Schmooze is unlike any concept Tony has been a part of before. Schmooze opened in 2018 to be a where businesses could collaborate and “schmooze” with clients to seal the deal

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.

It’s the Final Countdown - AZPCA Casino Night 2024

With apologies to the Rock Band “Europe” this was the Final Countdown for Casino Night 2024

When the final check was deposited and the last of the cash was counted our little club, AZPCA, managed to donate a very healthy sum of $13,519.84. to St. Vincent de Paul.

None of this could have been possible without the meticulous planning by Mark Baker and Jeanne Snyder, the incredible generosity of Alpio Barbara for use of the facilities, Terri, Beth and Todd for volunteering with the service and catering and all the volunteers that donated either articles for the auction or food for all the attendees to enjoy, I tip my hat to all of you, you are a wonderful group.

AZPCA Driving Tour Review - East Loop Drive

PCA Arizona drive to Superior -April 11 2024

I have to say what a glorious morning to take a drive and better yet with our Porsche club. We met up at IHOP in Mesa so it was a bit of a drive for us and a closer drive for others. Now I do have to inject a little Rod humor here…What are most of the waitresses names who work at IHOP…Eileen ( I lean ) , normally I would of asked where do women with 1 leg work ( IHOP ) , now I wasn’t meaning that in a harmful way , just a little editor humor .

This morning, we had 33 cars originally signed up to go but we wound up having I think 25. The drives with a lunch stop are limited due to the restaurant seating capacity. If your new here and are wanting to go on a drive with us be sure and sign up early. If you lallygag you will wind up on the waitlist. Today we had a good group of the usual participants and I think we had 4 new couples going on their 1st PCA AZ group drive.

President Mark got everyone’s attention by whistling and we gathered up for the drivers meeting. Angela had the clipboard for people to sign the waiver and to agree to the rules set forth, article 6, line 8, paragraph 3, Nah not really - just some more editor humor.

We divided up into 2 groups with Mark and Angela leading the pack in “Kermit” with Bill Stubbs in the sweep position. The 2nd group was led by Rook and Debbie with Michael McBride and Carlton Clark in the sweep position. For you new folks the sweep is like the caboose, they bring up the rear and in case of anyone having troubles they pull over to assist.

The groups departed 15 minutes apart and headed toward Globe via I 60. Traffic was somewhat light but we were able to maintain a nice pace staying close within the speed limits. Traveling up the “twisties” as we like to call the curves, we were able to spread out a bit. I was in my Carrera and selected the “sport plus “mode. I love that little dial on my steering wheel.

We entered Miami just prior to Hayden. The scenery was amazing, changing from tree filled mountain sides to stark bare rock face cliffs. The road condition was good as we descended, with a nice river off the left of the roadside. Coming into Winkelman there were a few unmarked police cars but we were all driving very safe as usual.

30
Photos

On our view to the left we could see layers of mining activity with rail cars below at the base of the mountain. We traveled further and saw cattle grazing on lush green pastures. As we approached the town of Kearney off in the distance we could see other mines. The sides of the mountains were carved away like the step pyramids of Egypt. We passed Copper Corridor Scenic Road and that answered my question, I wonder what they mine here? Looking over at the color of the hillside the mines they reminded me of a patchwork quilt with different patterns and textures. We were treated to an array of magnificent wild flowers, Arizona beauty at its best. Many Lavender, yellow, red, orange and pink colors, all so beautiful to drive by at 110 mph. Here I go again with my editor humor, we were cruising at 70.

We entered the town of Superior gracefully and with much respect to the community we rolled through the streets at 35 mph. We had passed a few groups of motorcycles who had given us the thumbs up as we went by as well as couple folks standing on the street. What can be more exciting than a caravan of Porsches. We arrived at the Silver King Smokehouse and enjoyed a great lunch amongst friends.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES

THE LOST ART OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE DRIVING How to Get the Most Out of Your Modern High-Performance Car by Ross Bentley, published 2017 by Motorbooks, Beverly MA

The Autocross Season (and Driver's Ed season) are times when this book should have been read. If you missed that window, this is still a good book to read at any time. It has year-round value and was written to be read at any time, by anybody, who wants to get more satisfaction out of driving. It is all about being involved in driving, as contrasted to just riding in the driver's seat. It is not so much for would be racers as for those who objected to Porsche's plan to eliminate manual transmissions. The author is an experienced racing instructor who approaches driving on the street as an opportunity to practice and perfect all the basic fundamentals of driving.

'Webster' provides no definition for high-performance driving. The author chooses to define it as “maximizing performance in all areas of driving”, in which he specifically includes “parking” and “smoothly progressing in rush hour traffic”. It is about performing with finesse in all aspects of driving and covers much more than just high-G cornering or achieving maximum speed. The author is definitely focused on taking control back from the computers and driving the car – performing all functions of driving at peak proficiency. Manual transmission cars are popular because they provide the driver with the pleasure of being involved in shifting gears. This book pushes the idea of getting actively involved in all the many other aspects of of operating a vehicle.

The bulk of THE LOST ART OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE DRIVING discusses ways to improve driving 'performance' that apply to everyday, on the street driving. Many of these techniques are applicable to on track situations as well, but can indeed be practiced and honed to perfection, during everyday driving. Most Porsche People will find many of the promoted skills to be common sense techniques that are already everyday practice. But no doubt everyone will find something new to think about, or think about in a new light.

Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect – Vision, Seating, Footwork, Steering, etc. Then there are separate chapters applicable to Road Driving and Track Driving. There really is 'something for everyone', regardless of current skill level. Though some discussions are directed at absolute neophytes, highly proficient drivers will still find this book to be thought-provokingly useful. Only two of the 14 chapters are specific to driving on a race track, but those skills still apply to non-track driving. There is no Porsche content per se, but several of the illustrative sketches look Porsche-like.

Definitely a book for both the neophyte and the experienced driver. Indeed, the more proficient the reader the better they can appreciate the nuances of what is being said by the author. While the author does discuss how modern car control functions affect driving at the limit, he recommends a 'nanny free' older vehicle for a better learning experience and more fun on the track, specifically saying “replace a Porsche that's used as a daily driver with something like a Miata” for more fun at the track.

THE LOST ART OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE DRIVING is softbound and 'shrunk' to a handy, convenient, handbook sized, 6x9 inch format. At 'full' size, the text would be easier to read. There are 160 matte pages with no photographs but many drawings. There is a fairly comprehensive index. This useful and inspiring book should be available for $26.99 from your favorite bookseller, or from QuartoKnows.com

Danielle’s Column - Where’s My Car Show....

Yes, yes, thanks to you, dear reader, I get to go to the Denver Car Show on press day. And I relish the opportunity. In fact, except for the Covid years, I haven’t missed a show in at least a decade.

There were a few, shall we say, challenges this year. Firstly, the show overlapped with the New York International Car Show. Which meant that anything really new and groundbreaking was about 2,000 miles east. Second, press “day” this year was really a morning. That afternoon, the show opened to the public. And that meant that one of the annual highlights, the presentations from manufacturers, were limited to two. Nissan and Subaru. Thank you both.

Ah, but it was good to see my fellow scribes, and see that the show floor had grown from the previous year, back to about what it was, pre-Pandemic. And that meant a lot of product, or so it seemed.

Yes but. I scanned a sea of new product and … well, let’s see, there were three Corvettes, a Stingray, an E-Ray and a ZO6, but they were all locked. There were four Porsches, supplied by a local dealer, two Taycans, a Macan and a Cayenne, but they were all cordoned off. I did sit in a Z-car. But then again, I drove one, when it was introduced, a few years ago. I sat in a BRZ, and a WRX. But I’ve driven a few of them, too.

What else for this poor gearhead? Well, sorry, the sea floor was filled to the gills with SUVs and trucks, along with a smattering of EVs. They all looked, well, pretty much, alike.

I yawned. But I knew better. I knew that the interesting, the weird, the fun stuff was back, toward the far wall. And that’s where I headed.

To find, whoa, a Tesla Cybertruck. And it was privately-owned. How do I know this? I struck up a conversation with an exhibitor, seated nearby, next to his beautifully restored Triumph TR-6. He had a pile of fliers for a Brit car club and upcoming Brit car show. He said he knew the owner.

Now, the Triumph represented a bit of nostalgia for me. I told the owner that I had had a Triumph TR-4, back in the day, and it was my first sports car, and it changed my life, and I should have never sold it. He laughed.

This was the first Cybertruck I had seen in the wild, so to speak. It’s big, really big, larger than life. The windshield must be five feet by five feet. At least. One big plate of glass,

42

with a single windshield wiper standing in salute, on one side. And, on the dash, nothing but a vertically oriented flat screen, centered.

I felt the side window glass. I was curious … I remembered Elon Musk driving into Jay Leno’s Garage in the prototype, telling Jay the windows were bulletproof. Jay asked, why? And Musk’s response was “because it’s badass. Don’t you want your windows to be badass?” Jay shook his head, sort of.

Next to the Cybertruck was a tractor-trailer cab. It’s hard to believe, but the cab-forward thing actually dwarfed the Tesla. It was made by a firm called Nicola. Yes, that’s right. A coincidence? We may never know. But the descriptor sign said it was hydrogen-powered.

And, nearby stood a 427 Cobra replica. “Powered by Rousch” said the hood scoop power bulge. A sign in front promoted the Mile-High Cobra Club.

Not far away were a kitted-out, track-ready Nissan Skyline GT-R and a similarly festooned Mazda RX-7. Both were under the banner of the Go For It Race School.

And then there was a Buick Riviera, slammed, lowered, chromed to an inch of its life. On its own stand. Basking in a gazillion watts of luminosity. Why? Why was it there? I don’t know. But it did transport me back to the car show days of yore, of revolving platforms, where the best new stuff would shout out “look at me!” and golden girls would stand proudly and read off the litany of automotive firsts that the vehicles represented.

Ah, those were indeed the days. And, judging by the product mix this year, those days are now relegated to the far wall. And so is a lot of the enthusiasm that captivated me, the sizzle that sold the vehicles and made my blood boil. There’s no doubt, these days the pulse rate is slower. But, if the show this year is any indication, at least there’s still a pulse.

TechTime with Scott M - What to do if.....

What to do if……

As a Porsche repair shop owner, I get a lot of calls that start out “what do I do now” when an issue comes up with their Porsche. The issue could be something mechanical with the car like a check engine light, or a running issue with the car or even after an accident. In this article I will try to help you be prepared if something goes wrong with your Porsche you have a plan.

One of the first things I tell new Porsche owners is to get familiar with their Porsche’s owner’s manual. Most everything you are going to need to know about your vehicle is going to be in the owner’s manual. I have been working on Porsche cars for a long time and I still will look up items in the manual time to time. Everything from how to tow the vehicle, fluids, fuses, emergency top operation, maintenance schedules and much, much more is in your owner’s manual. If you don’t have your owner’s manual, I recommend ordering one online or contact Porsche. Also, Porsche has online free owner’s manual videos that are free of charge.

Let’s start with the most common issue I see, the dreaded check engine light.

Starting in 1996 all cars were equipped with OBDII engine monitoring programs and equipment. The purpose of the CEL is to monitor different components of the engine/vehicle and let the driver know if there is an issue. It also is what the emissions testing uses to either pass or fail a car going through emissions. It is a pretty basic system once you know how it works. If your check engine light is on but is NOT flashing, there is an issue with the vehicle or the vehicle emission system. In MOST cases it is ok to drive the vehicle until a repair is made. The newer Porsche will tell you on the dash if it is ok to drive. Now if there is a check engine light that is FLASHING that means that there is damage being done to the vehicle or the catalytic converters. You should NOT drive anywhere and avoid starting the car until a repair has been made. The damage you can do to the car can happen quickly. Once the check engine light is turned on the vehicle will not pass emissions testing. If you clear the light with a scanner the car must be driven awhile through drive cycles without issues for the car to pass emissions. So, clearing the light and driving through emissions is a waste of time. One of the biggest issues I see with check engine lights is lose gas caps. Other issues I see are the change of winter to summer gasoline can cause some Porsche to throw a light.

54
A little background on the check engine light (CEL).

A cheap code reader is a good idea to have or a trip to an auto parts store for a quick scan is sometimes helpful.

What if you have an issue with your Porsche but no check engine light? Being prepared with good info for your mechanic can save a lot of time and money. Is the issue constant or does it come and go? Does the issue happen on cold start or only when warm. Does the issue happen at a certain speed or gear? If there is fluid on the ground, where approximately on the car is the leak coming from and what color is the fluid? Any unusual noises and when do those noises happen? Any info you can give your mechanic will really help. I have had customers in the past keep spreadsheets on issues and when they happen. That might be a bit of overkill, but anything helps.

The last situation I want to discuss is what to do when something really bad happens. I have driven thousands of Porsches off the track and on and have been super lucky to never have an issue. Well that changed when driving my Cayenne Diesel last summer when I was re-ended and totaled by a garbage truck. I was completely unprepared for the accident and the time immediately after the accident. I should have had a pen and paper handy in the car and the number to my tow truck driver. Thinking about what could happen and being prepared with a plan is really going to help in the case of an accident.

The current Mcilvain Motors was founded by Scott Mcilvain, great grandson of E.H “Mac” Mcilvain. Scott was hooked on the family business and performance cars at a very early age. He later left Prescott and attended Arizona State University where he earned a degree in business. It was while Scott was an account manager at a top 25 marketing agency that he fell in love with his first PORSCHE, a 1979 930. This 930 led Scott to a major career change with PORSCHE. As one of twelve students accepted to the prestigious PORSCHE PTAP program after two years of general automotive study, Scott went on to complete six months of the most intensive and detailed PORSCHE hands-on training available in the U.S. After graduating with top of the class honors, Scott returned back to the Phoenix Arizona where he worked at a well-known PORSCHE independent repair facility. Scott then took a great opportunity at one of the best PORSCHE custombuild racecar and service centers in the world. Here, Scott was the head late model technician, sales manager and head driving instructor. Deciding that Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and the other valley cities needed an affordable late model PORSCHE service center, Scott opened Mcilvain Motors

Stuttgart Market Letter

E

ven with sales from the Florida auctions being split between February and March this year, March 2024’s dollar volume topped 2023’s by nearly $10m with a total of $52,660,172 off of 608 Porsches on offer. March 2024’s sell-through rate (STR), on the other hand, was less than 2023’s 76% coming in at 71%. But even at 71%, I’d say the market is looking up as we haven’t had an STR over 70% in a while.

At the top of the market, we had a number of million-dollar sales with top honors going to a 959 Komfort modified by Canepa at $2.8m. Other notable $1m+ sales include another 959 Komfort, this one unmodified, at $1,795,000, a 2005 Carrera GT that sold for $1,560,000, and a 1966 906 Carrera 6 that hammered at $2,000,000, which was a nice surprise as many vintage race cars have struggled to sell over the last twelve months.

Unfortunately, the top end of the market had more no-sales than sales with two Spyders failing to sell at $3,100,000 and $3,200,000. We also saw a 911 reimagined by Singer go unsold at $1,225,000, a 2005 Carrera GT at $1,125,000, a 1957 356A 1500 Carrera Speedster GS/GT at $1,000,000, and my favorite car of the month, a 1971 914/6 GT with Monte Carlo rally history at $1,100,000. Had I won the lottery, that 914/6 would have been sold.

The other nice surprise from March was a number of 2023 911 Sport Classics coming to market, as prior to this month, the highly sought after Porsche had been fairly quiet on the auction circuit. The first car to sell was a Gentian Blue example with 52 miles that brought $472,500 followed by a launch-spec car at $445,000. The top-selling Sport Classic, though, was a Paint to Sample Underberg Green car with 10 miles hammering for $478,000.

Along with the GS/GT Carrera Speedster mentioned above, we saw several interesting 356s hit the market this month. We had a 1956 356A European Coupe distributed through Hoffman Motor Company sell for $239,000. Finished in a beautiful shade of Aquamarine Blue Metallic, this example sported a replacement 1.9-liter engine and bested its previous 2021 sale of $190,000 by quite the margin. Gooding & Co. sold a rare one-year-only 1955 Continental Coupe for $218,400 and a matching-numbers 1958 356A Speedster in Fjord Green sold for $380,000.

993s had a strong showing this month with 71% of the 24 cars on offer bringing in close to $4,000,000. At the top of the pack was a 1996 911 modified by Gunther Werks. This heavily modified 993 Coupe was the first of 25 “Sport Touring” examples commissioned by the company and sold for $1,022,500 at RM Sotheby’s Miami auction. We also saw an exceedingly rare 1995 911 Turbo Cabriolet at Broad Arrow’s Amelia sale which, unfortunately, went unsold at a final bid of $600,000. Other notable 993 sales include a 1998 911 Carrera 4S at $301,000, a 1998 911 Carrera S at $202,000, and a stunning 1997 911 Turbo S at $490,000.

58

By all means, March was an impressive month. To reach such a dollar volume with the Amelia sales being split between two months and to have such a high number of cars speaks volume to the state of the market. While the winter months were a little soft, I think it’s safe to say that Spring has sprung for the collector Porsche market. Next month we’ll see if this continues as we have another all-Porsche auction from Broad Arrow to look forward to at the end of April.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

60

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

Death by Slaloms - Autox April 27

Well, the weather was fantastic, starting out at 60 degrees and climbing to 85 degrees with a moderate breeze all day long. Competitors were treated to the longest course for the season, in fact, it was probably the longest course the club has ever put on. Appropriately nicknamed “Death by Slaloms” by Eric S, a Porsche driver of great skill, the track had several tight turns, a long diagonal section, which featured a number of slaloms to tax the skill of both first timer and seasoned veterans and a fast section through the start/finish. Attached is a course map and competitors’ times for the day. Photos are of Eric S, preparing his “Outlaw” Porsche for the event by precisely adjusting the air pressure in the car’s tires.
