KROC CENTER

one place, one mission! The Kroc Center Suisun City provides a welcoming safe haven through inspiration, affordability, and outreach. We are innovative. We adapt. We embrace opportunities to transform families and our diverse community in Body, Mind, and Soul. This summer, The Salvation Army Kroc Center was honored to receive the designation of Business of the Year from the FairfieldSuisun Chamber of Commerce. It was a designation we never expected. It was however, validation that our commitment to excellence and our extensive reach into this community through the volunteerism of our team of exceptional staff has not gone unnoticed. It has been tremendous this past summer to see the Kroc Center so active with members, day pass users and visitors of all ages having fun while learning and growing together. There is no doubt in our minds that peoples lives have been transformed at the Kroc Center this summer as new programs have helped children learn to read, teens develop their entrepreneurial visions and adults achieve their health and wellness goals.

MEET THE

CAPTAINS

As we enter the fall season, we have tons of new opportunities for personal growth and development coming to the Kroc Center. A new partnership with the Young Artists Conservatory of Music will bring high quality orchestra, band, vocal, and theater excellence to the Kroc Center. Music Matters is a program that has proven to be highly successful in the Fairfield-Suisun School District and Young Artist Conservatory is excited to partner with the Kroc Center to offer the program to even more local children.

The Kroc Bus will also hit the streets this fall making it even easier for you to engage your children in programming at the Kroc Center. By providing transportation from area schools, we want to ensure your family has every opportunity for you to accomplish your wellness goals whether in body, mind, soul or all three.

KROC WORSHIP

THIS YEAR...

GIVE

HOPE Giving hope to a family in need can impact their lives in immeasurable ways. Time and time again we have heard from people who are now working and back on their feet, recovering from addiction or a major crisis in their lives who tell us that The Salvation Army provided hope for a better tomorrow at a time when they needed it the most. We can’t however do it alone, in fact we can’t do it at all without the generosity of people like you. You can Give Hope year round and especially during the holiday season by being generous with your time, talents and treasures. Giving Hope can be as simple as:

Give Your Time Become a volunteer ringing the bell at a red kettle, packing food boxes or any one of our opportunities for service. Individual volunteers are always needed but groups of people can have an even greater impact. When Bible study groups, service clubs, churches, neighborhoods, businesses and even families all come together we are able to provide even more hope to people in need.

Give Your Talent Are you a great organizer, teacher, leader or have a particular talent that could be used to provide to people in need? We need individuals to organize food drives, teach classes, and plan fundraisers.

Give Your Treasure Financial gifts of all sizes make a difference. Your financial gift can put food on the table of a hungry senior, a roof over the head of a homeless mom and her children, or gas in the car of a veteran who needs to attend a doctor’s appointment. Your gift of whatever amount enables The Salvation Army to meet immediate needs as they arise.

Giving Hope is really very simple and starts with your willingness to do so. Together we can transform lives forever. Will you Give Hope?

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE Seasonal Volunteer Opportunities: • Bell Ringing at a Red Kettle • Food Box Packing • Food Distribution • Angel Tree • Canned Food Sorting

Year Round Volunteer Opportunities: • Teaching a class • Assisting class instructors • Reading to children • Tutoring • Building Maintenance • Food Distribution • Clerical • Special events To register as a volunteer with The Salvation Army and discover all the great volunteer opportunities with our organization visit www. solanoarmyofhope.org or call our volunteer hotline at (707)439-7889.

WORSHIP CLASSES

At the Kroc Center, we believe that families that worship together stay together. We have therefore developed a number of elements that help families develop and grow spiritually through weekly character development programs for all ages. Broken up into safe peer groups with impassioned leaders who love God and the people they guide. Our objective is to meet people where they are spiritually and provide opportunities for growth in every aspect of life. In addition to the fitness programs you already know and love, Wednesday evenings at the Kroc focuses on being spiritually fit.

Troops The Salvation Army has designed fun, safe and educational programs with a Biblical foundation. Sunbeams for girls and Adventure Corps for boys offer youth the chance to experience a wide variety of fun and educational activities where the children learn, play, and interact in a safe and positive environment. The Salvation Army’s character building programs are biblically based with caring, trained volunteer leaders. Day: Wednesday Time: 6:30-7:30 pm

During the meetings, age appropriate activities prepare the children for interaction with their peers and promotion into the other programs for older age groups. The goal of the Moonbeam program is to help boys and girls to develop positive social and communication habits and promote their giftedness.

Enroll now in The Salvation Army Sunbeam Troop! Sunbeams experience a program that provides young girls in grades 1-6 an opportunity for social, personal, spiritual, mental, and physical growth. They’ll bond with their team mates, collaborate on fun projects and activities and earn badges for their hard work and effort!

The Salvation Army Adventure Corps is a Christian education program designed for boys in grades 1 through 6, helping them to develop their individuality and potential. Boys will establish a sense of personal identity and character through their interaction with other team members and leaders and develop physical, mental, and social skills in the Adventure Corps program. They’ll learn the importance of Christian values and biblical truths by experiencing God’s Word and by the modeled example of their Christian leaders.

TRUE ALTRUISM MORE THAN A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

Two men’s lives ran parallel tracks until a year ago when their path’s intersected. Now they are forever connected. One man had reconciled himself with the reality that kidney failure would soon take his life. The other man would soon learn he could help save a life. Lewis Williams will be the very first to tell you he is here by God’s grace. In Chris Hernandez he found a man who is also committed to serving God by treating other people with dignity and respect. In the Spring, Lewis successfully received a kidney transplant from Chris that saved his life. Lewis Williams & Chris Hernandez have faced this journey together and want to create awareness that this success story does not have to arise out of a chance encounter. Together they would like to answer questions about the fears and doubts of being a donor or a recipient. The two would like to build awareness in the local community using firsthand experience. Lewis was first diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in late 2000. Initially told he would begin to suffer from renal failure within a couple of years, he beat those odds and did not begin dialysis until November 2012. However Lewis would soon learn that the list of those awaiting a transplant locally numbered in the range of 5,000 to 7,000 (85,000 nationally) and the average wait for a transplant was between 7-8 years. At this crossroads, Lewis says “I reconciled myself with the reality I would die on dialysis.” Determined to work on his overall wellness, he spent time at several fitness centers. An employee at one of those fitness centers good-

heartedly suggested he should check out the Kroc Center because it might be a “better fit for him.” So he took that advice and recounts that “From the moment I walked in the doors, I said Thank You Lord, I am where I need to be. I found a social meeting place. A place where people can sit, have coffee, and talk.” He felt at home at the Center, making new friends with both members and staff. Six months later, during the Christmas Holidays, Chris learned from fitness co-worker Sydney Clark that Lewis was in need of a kidney. He considered the man he had recently come to know. He considered the man with a heart for people, a heart for teens, and a heart for God. He considered the wisdom and perspective Mr. Williams brought with him to the center each day. In the ensuing days Chris felt called to action and made the decision to approach Lewis about donating his kidney. This act of altruism was astonishing to Lewis. Others had offered to help him before, but none were viable candidates. A series of criteria needs to be met in order to gain medical approval for a transplant. Lewis describes Chris as a “gift from God” as he was an absolute match! On April 29th, four months after making his commitment and attending the required medical screenings and consultations, Chris donated his kidney to Lewis in a procedure at the UCSF Medical Center. Three days later, both walked out of the hospital. Lewis stepped into a new chapter of life made possible by a gesture of true altruism. Chris made a selfless decision to help save a life. Both men would like to help build awareness. Awareness that organ donation is safe. Awareness that we too can make a difference for others. Awareness of a call to action from God.

Belay Certification Belaying is the act of properly using the climbing rope to safeguard a climber. In the event of a fall, the belayer locks off the rope to stop the fall. Belaying is a big responsibility. If you take on the task you should be competent and alert. You should know the proper safety checks and belay signals. The Kroc Center offers a FREE belay class. Here you will become familiar with the equipment and the techniques required for certification. Belay certification test required once a year. See Rock Wall Attendant or Fitness Manager.

Discover the sport of rock climbing on the Kroc Rock Wall. Whether you are 7 or 70 you’re sure to enjoy this great activity.

In addition, our Auto Belay systems allow you to work on your endurance and improve your skills without the need of a partner.

Bouldering

Top Roping

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed safely without the use of ropes or harnesses. It serves to build stamina, technique, and increase finger strength. While it can be done without any equipment whatsoever, most climbers use climbing shoes to help secure footholds, chalk to keep their hands dry, and bouldering crash pads to prevent injuries from falls.

Top roping is a climbing style in which a rope, used for the climber’s safety, runs from the climber’s partner. Partners, known as a “belayer,” must be Belay Certified and positioned at the foot of a route through one or more carabiners connected to an anchor system at the top of the route and back down to the climber.

The sport originated as a method of training for roped climbs and mountaineering. Bouldering enables climbers to practice at a safe distance from the ground. At the Kroc, our bouldering height is 11 feet at head level, and boulderers position crash pads near the climbing wall to provide a softer landing, as well as one or more spotters to help redirect the climber towards the pads. Kroc’s Climbing Wall will now be available to all members and day pass holders to practice their bouldering skills any time of the day at no cost! All you need is a 20 minute training session with one of our climbing staff during our regular climbing wall hours!!! Age: 18 & Up

Daniel Liu, 17 Armijo High Senior

Taijia Robinson, 14 Vanden High Sophomore

Luis Carbajal, 18 Rodriguez High Graduate

Daniel has volunteered his time this past year helping elementary school children with their homework in the After School Program and assisting with the Summer Lunch Program. He believes the lunch program provides healthy alternatives and gives youth a chance to meet up and socialize. By volunteering, Daniels says, “I better understand my interest and I am acquiring skills that are important for the real world.” His future plans are to attend a UC School and study Biochemistry.

Taijia was encouraged by family to gain work experience this summer volunteering at the center. She assists with the Summer Lunch Program and believes “it is valuable because it provides a healthier alternative to fast food.” Taijia finds herself busy in the books during the school year and would like to study medicine. The opportunity to volunteer at the center allows her to gain experience without taking a job.

Luis began volunteering at the center in March to satisfy a requirement for his high school Economics class. He was asked to complete 10 hours of work at a non-profit organization. Within several weeks, he had completed his volunteer assignment. But, he decided to stay onboard and continued volunteering 6-12 hours per week all the way in to the summer! He says, “I liked it and it made me feel like a better person.” With a strong work ethic and great enthusiasm, once Luis turned 18 he came on board as a member of the Kroc Staff! He will be attending Napa Valley College in the Fall and his long term goal is to work in the medical field.

WILL’S 6 SAFETY TIPS 1. Be aware of the pool rules. Each facility has different sets of rules. Rules are for your safety and the safety of others. 2. Make sure your lifejacket is US coast guard approved. These life jackets are tested and rated for consumer safety. When worn properly an unconscious person floats head up. 3. Have kids take a certified swimming class. If your kids are going to be spending a lot of time at the pool, consider enrolling them in a certified swimming class. These classes can teach them some basic pool safety measures and flotation techniques.

4. Learn basic CPR. Make sure at least one adult on the premises is confident performing CPR in the event of an emergency. This can be a life-saver when kids or even adults need help during a drowning incident 5. Always watch your children in the pool. No one knows your child as well as you. You can recognize your child’s distressed expression and body positioning before other participants. This will prevent an accident before it happens. 6. Always be alert around the pool.
