THE STORY OF THE Ray & Joan Kroc
KROC CENTER The 65,000 square foot Suisun City Kroc Center is one of 26 Kroc Centers open and operating nationwide. In 1998, Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, donated $90 million to The Salvation Army to build a comprehensive community center in San Diego, California. Her goal was to create a center, supported in part by the community, where children and families would be exposed to different people, activities and arts that would otherwise be beyond their reach. When Mrs. Kroc passed away in October 2003, she left $1.5 billion - much of her estate - to The Salvation Army, by far the largest charitable gift ever given to the Army, and the largest single gift given to any single charity at one time. The money was designated to build a series of state-of-the-art Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers nationwide patterned after the San Diego center. A total of 27 centers will be operational once the project is complete. Š 2013 The Salvation Army

A LETTER FROM
THE CAPTAINS A new year always brings about a season of change. We make commitments to ourselves to lose weight, eat healthier, quit smoking and a host of other resolutions that are often as empty as our gym bags come February! As a team we made some commitments to you before we even opened the front doors. We told you we would provide our members and visitors an unparalleled clean facility, exceptional programs, excellent customer service and a culture that promotes personal wellness in body, mind and soul. These were the core values we set out to establish and our team is even more committed to these values today than ever before. A new year also presents a new opportunity to reinvigorate these values throughout the center and we are totally focused on providing you with everything you need to achieve all your health goals.
Capt. Jonathan Harvey Captain Jonathan Harvey Kroc Center Administrator & Solano County Coordinator The Salvation Army of Solano County
As we enter 2014 we have taken time to reflect on the hundreds of events, programs, classes, activities and life transforming moments we have experienced this year. It is with great optimism therefore that we feel confident you will love the Kroc Center. Not just because it’s a clean and safe place of excellence for your family but because we are so much more than just a gym. With everything from theater productions to swim lessons, Zumba to Worship and catering to crochet we believe Day 1 Starts Here! The scripture tells us in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength”. This publication will provide you with a guide to all the Kroc Center has to offer and we believe if you’re resolute to try, you’ll discover that here. Blessings.

Danet Williams, Kroc Center Member since May 2012, is 41 years old and a mother of four. She shares with us about her love for fitness and “if she can do it so can you!”
I love the Kroc because there are all levels of fitness: beginners, intermediate and advanced. The friendly staff makes it inviting and enjoyable. I would like to one day become a fitness trainer and help others achieve their goals even if it seemed at some point unattainable. I also want to be the type of trainer that emphasizes diet as well as working out. Diet carries a higher importance, it counts for almost 70% and working out counts for roughly 30%. So by doing both, you are in a win-win situation. Whatever your goals may be, the Kroc’s workout equipment, classes and friendly staff can get you on the right path!”
Mark Schreiber Member Since February 2013 Mark Schreiber has been on the move……literally. In just under ten months, he has lost an astonishing 100 lbs! A lifelong resident of San Francisco, he came to Suisun with his family 3 years ago to get away from the fast pace of the city and to change his lifestyle. As a club promoter, he fell into many of the traps of the nightclub lifestyle. Years of late night eating, poor sleeping habits, and “living it up” had taken a toll on him. The change in pace has been refreshing. “People are not in a huge rush, they are friendlier, and it has helped me focus on things in life that are most important.” At the top of the list for Mark was getting in shape. When he walked in the door in February he weighed 360lbs and could barely manage 30 minutes on the treadmills. With a history of diabetes and health problems in his family, Mark committed himself to improving his diet and dedicated himself to working out consistently. Since becoming a member of the Kroc Center he has worked his way up to nearly two hours of cardio and recently added weight training to his routine. In addition to the obvious health benefits, he is now able to do something many people take for granted. Mark, a die-hard fan of the 49ers and Giants, found it very difficult to find clothes and apparel that fit without taking the extra measure of special ordering. “It was hard to find clothes for my size and build. Now I can shop for the clothes I really want, not just the ones that fit!” Mark has a renewed confidence and in the coming year has a goal of getting down to 220lbs and to get back in to the workforce. We wish Mark luck as he continues his transformation at the Kroc!

“I have been highly involved in fitness and working out for almost 20 years. I haven’t always been in shape and once I experienced the feeling that I get while working out, I never wanted to let it go. The very first gym that I joined was the YMCA which is now the Salvation Army Kroc Center. After taking numerous cardio classes for several years I decided to get familiar with weight lifting in order to do a total transformation of my body. It hasn’t always been easy, but with consistency I was able to lift heavier over time. This enabled me to enter my first INBA Natural Bodybuilding Competition in October of this year.
Susan Oliver Member Since May 2012 Fairfield Resident, 37 years Forty three years ago Susan decided to take a leap of faith. Born and raised in Harlem, New York, she “wanted to find out what the rest of the world was like.” Two things were certain: she wanted to be a teacher and she wanted to experience the world outside of her immediate community. No one in her family had ever been outside of New York. In 1969, Susan took a giant step towards meeting that goal by completing a graduate program at Yeshiva University. Her focus was to teach in disadvantaged communities.
16 MEMBER PROFILES
In 1970, she made the move from New York to San Francisco. In the late sixties, “this was a big move for a woman, particularly a young black woman.” The change in scenery allowed Susan to experience the independence she had been seeking. Susan moved to the Fairfield & Suisun community in 1976. She found it to be just the right place for her to raise her family and continue her teaching career. Her career in the Fairfield Unified School District spanned four decades. Susan loved working with children and “every day was different because the children made it exciting.” She retired in 2003 having taught Kindergarten at Dan O. Root, Fairview, and Suisun Elementary Schools. Susan has been a member of various community based centers including: the Kroc Center since we opened in May 2012, the YMCA, and the Fairfield Senior Center. A natural teacher, Susan helped teach Tai Chi for ten years at the Senior Center and still takes classes at Wu Shing Tai Chi. She rounds out her pursuit of a balanced mind, body, and soul with daily activities at the Kroc Center. Her favorite classes are Spin, Strength & Tone, Step, and Zumba. While she is here, she has also made new friends that include other members, volunteers, and staff. Occasionally, she comes full circle when she catches up with adult members that she once had the pleasure of teaching.
Tom Balmer Member Since February 2012 Fairfield Resident, 59 years “There is nothing I can’t do if I really want to,” Tom proclaimed after completing a 100 mile bike ride on his 66th birthday. Those who have been around him the past few years would agree. In the past 12 months, Tom completed his Bachelor’s Degree with Honors, revived his passion for cycling, and along the way lost 83 lbs! Tom has a passion for photography. Starting with a job at the Daily Republic right out of high school and going on to operate his own commercial photography business, he accumulated a wealth of experience in his trade. Understanding that practical training was very sparse for aspiring photographers, Tom jumped at an opportunity to teach his vocation at the high school level. He taught photography, videography, and television production at Hogan High School for 13 years. Unfortunately, in 2006, a change in the credentialing requirements for California teachers directly affected Tom. Despite a world of experience, he would need a 4 year degree to continue to teach. In Tom’s mind there was only one thing to do. He went back to school. So, for the past six years he attended school at Solano College, Sacramento State, and has worked part time at a local cycling shop. In December 2012, Tom completed his degree program! With such a telling accomplishment under his belt, what could possibly be next? He had been coming to the Kroc Center to accompany his 98 year old father, but he had not participated in any activity. Free of the time commitment of school, he came to the unsettling realization that he had put on some weight. Checking in at 280lbs, he says “I thought of the things I would not be able to do again being so heavy. I love cyc-Your data has been truncated.
AFTER
Checking in at 280lbs, he says “I thought of the things I would not be able to do again being so heavy. I love cycling. I love camping.” Determined to get in shape, he announced to his friends on Facebook that he intended to lose 100lbs and immediately got to work. He started closely monitoring his diet and taking water aerobics classes three days a week. By April he had lost 30 lbs. and started cycling again. On May 30 th, he rode 100 miles on his birthday and has continued to rack up the mileage. Today he is seventeen pounds away from his goal and tells us “this is the first time I have been under 200 lbs. in twenty five years!” It looks like Tom is well on his way to meeting his fitness goal and will be back in the classroom teaching soon .
BEFORE 2014 Winter/Spring Program Guide
Ana, Alexis, & Arnold Members Since September 2012 Ana has access to other gyms, but her family has found something unique at the Kroc Center. Three generations: herself, her children, and 2 year old grandson Arnold are all able to come down to the Kroc community center and find something that is tailored to them. It isn’t uncommon for them to run in to other members of the family that also live in the area. Ana’s brothers and their families are members at the center as well. “Unlike other gyms, there is something to do for those of all ages and that is why we come here. Our entire family can be members of the same place.”
We thank Ana, Alexis, and family for making the center a regular destination and look forward to other families also calling the Kroc Center home!

Ana is a regular at group exercise classes and her weekly schedule usually merges with her family. Her oldest daughter Alexis and grandson Arnold are here the most. You can find Arnold and Alexis in the jump houses on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Alexis tells us that her son is “always talking about the Kroc. He loves to come here….and he is always trying to sneak off to the pool.” She says that Arnold swims with grandma and also likes to play basketball. Alexis, has worked out at other facilities, but this family oriented center has made the most sense for her. In her first three months, she lost 13 lbs. while learning her way around the fitness room. She has dedicated herself to a weight training routine, incorporated the various cardio machines, and sought guidance from the staff fitness trainers. In the future, she plans on taking nutrition classes, continuing her consistent workout regimen, and is setting her sights on becoming a fitness competitor!

Hello, my name is Socorro Rosa, but everyone calls me “Coco”. I was born and raised in New Jersey. I have lived here in Northern California for the past 17 years. I have been a fitness instructor for the past 2 years. I am a Certified U-JAM Fitness® Instructor and love teaching here at the Kroc. Being a U-JAM Fitness® Instructor has given me so many amazing opportunities to share my passion in dance and fitness. I am able to help the participants in my classes achieve their fitness goals. I love teaching U-Jam Fitness® because it unites world beats with urban flavor and the participants get to enjoy an intense cardio workout designed to burn calories and tone their bodies. LINDA GUISANDE
My name is Linda Guisande. I have been working for the Kroc Center for the past 18 months as a fitness instructor, I teach spin, strength & tone, and gentle stretch & tone. I love working for the Kroc. The members have been so nice to work with and a pleasure to teach. Fitness has always been my passion. I have been teaching for over 10 years. I volunteered at the YMCA for 5 years as a spin instructor when it was open. I have taught step and dance for over ten years at a local church. My husband Vince and I have been married nearly 30 years. Together with our adult children, Vincent Jr. and Angelina, we own and operate Tri-City Glass & Mirror in Suisun. In our spare time we support the efforts of Mission Solano and The Matt Garcia Foundation.
LENNIE-JANE UTANES I have always had a passion for dancing. At a young age, I found a passion and
plenty of love shaking my hips to the beats of Polynesian drumming/music. It has now been over 25-years of Polynesian dancing for me. Dancing certainly became a part of my mind, body and soul! HOT HULA fitness® has been an awesome opportunity in my life and for many. I have come across mothers that used to dance with a halau (a hula school or group), yet don’t want to compete or perform, but still want to get a workout. Some women that have danced with a halau take HOT HULA fitness® classes to emphasize their endurance and strength. Many others that have no idea what HOT HULA fitness® is have been excited to start my class! I am extremely excited to see where my dance and fitness journey will take me with HOT HULA fitness® and U-Jam Fitness®(I am an instructor-in-training!) My main objective in doing what I do is to help make others feel loved and important on this earth and to walk out of my classes as a new and changed person.

He started performing and competing in Salsa Dancing New York Style “On 2” in 2000 while he was in the United States Marine Corps. It’s amazing seeing the growth of a life from having never taken a dance class to loving Zumba Fitness. Come join the party at The Salvation Army Suisun City KROC Center!”

kroc staff spotlight Diana Holokahi Kroc Team Member Since February 2012 Daly City “God Ordained.” Two powerful words sum up how Diana and her family have found themselves engrained in the fabric of the Kroc Center’s first two years of operation. While she has an impressive resume of formal training dating back to when she was five years old, it is her passion that resonates with all that meet her. Di has a passion for music and for God that has helped her family overcome obstacles, including a challenging economy. Today she is spearheading the programming for the Center in Music and Worship Arts. Prior to assuming her current role, Di served as the Rental Coordinator for the Kroc Center and helped to lay the foundation for many of the services we offer today. Di, her husband Isaiah, and five year old daughter Anela are fixtures in the activities throughout the facility and are an integral part of the church. In addition to volunteering as a music instructor, Isaiah can be found alongside his wife at the very center of the Worship Team. They encourage one another in worship and their relationship with God. Her vision for the Music and Worship Arts program is that it will provide “encouragement to the community to use talent, whatever it may be…..and to utilize it for God’s glory. There is no limit to how God wants us to worship him!”

ROCK
Discover the sport of rock climbing on the Kroc Rock Wall. Whether you are 7 or 70 you’re sure to enjoy this great activity. In addition, our Auto Belay systems allow you to work on your endurance and improve your skills without the need of a partner.

BOULDERING
Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed safely without the use of ropes or harnesses, and serves to build stamina, technique, and increase finger strength. While it can be done without any equipment whatsoever, most climbers use climbing shoes to help secure footholds, chalk to keep their hands dry, and bouldering crash pads to prevent injuries from falls. The sport originated as a method of training for roped climbs and mountaineering. Bouldering enables climbers to practice at a safe distance from the ground. At the Kroc, our bouldering height is 11 feet at head level, and boulderers position crash pads near the climbing wall to provide a softer landing, as well as one or more spotters to help redirect the climber towards the pads. Kroc’s Climbing Wall will now be available to all members and day pass holders to practice their bouldering skills vany time of the day at no cost! All you need is a 20 minute training session with one of our climbing staff during our regular climbing wall hours!!! Age: 18 & Up
AGE GUIDELINES -Top rope climbing is open to members or Day Pass holders with activity tokens who are ages 4 and older. -Belaying is restricted to certified individuals 13 years or older -Bouldering is available to members and Day Pass holders ages 18 and older.

Will’s 6 Safety Tips 44
1. Be aware of the pool rules. Each facility has different sets of rules. Rules are for your safety and the safety of others.
AQUATICS
2. Make sure your lifejacket is US coast guard approved. These life jackets are tested and rated for consumer safety. When worn properly an unconscious person floats head up. 3. Have kids take a certified swimming class. If your kids are going to be spending a lot of time at the pool, consider enrolling them in a certified swimming class. These classes can teach them some basic pool safety measures and flotation techniques. 4. Learn basic CPR. Make sure at least one adult on the premises is confident performing CPR in the event of an emergency. This can be a life-saver when kids or even adults need help during a drowning incident 5. Always watch your children in the pool. No one knows your child as well as you. You can recognize your child’s distressed expression and body positioning before other participants. This will prevent an accident before it happens. 6. Always be alert around the pool.

Lerato Childs has a vision of instilling the same values she learned in her upbringing from her grandmother and parents. Values that mirror the organization she works for and that she learned halfway around the world growing up in Pretoria, South Africa. “It is a living testament of God’s grace that I came to work for a Christian based organization that helps people, children, and community. If I could take this building and put it in South Africa, I would.”

Her sights are now set on obtaining a Certification in Childhood Development and pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Social Sciences. Working at the Kroc Center, she is immersed in work with children that she treasures. “The values my grandma instilled…. are the values I hope to help instill here and with my own children.” The Center and community found a treasure in Lerato.
49 YOUTH & TEENS
Lerato came to the United States when she was eighteen years old on a work visa. Unbeknown to her, God had a divine journey planned. What she found was opportunities abound not available in her home country. She says, “The U.S. has a lot of opportunity. There is no reason for people not to succeed unless they choose not to. With God, a servants heart and a great education anything is attainable.” Motivated by this, she set her sights on obtaining a more permanent student visa. In the next few years at Sacramento City College, Lerato completed her AA in Social Sciences, served as a student leader, worked as an intern at the State Capitol, and met her future husband!

kroc staff spotlight Kevin Pfister, Facilities Manager Kroc Team Member Since May 2012 Solano County Resident, 48 years In Kevin’s occupation, it wasn’t unusual to have periods of time without work. In Oct 2011, during a layoff, he sought out volunteer work at the local Salvation Army office. What started as a few hours stuffing envelopes has turned in to a career change! He had stumbled upon an opportunity to marry his profession with his calling. In addition to volunteering, Kevin became one of the first members of the new church. He tells us “there were more people in Salvation Army uniforms than there were guest in the congregation.” A lifelong resident of Solano County, Kevin has now lived in Suisun for eight years. He believes the center serves the greater community, but is “Most impactful for families because of the family enriching environment. Kids can get off the video games, dad gets away from the television, and they can all meet mom at the Center.” Kevin came on board as part of the new center’s maintenance staff. He first learned his trade when he enlisted in the Army at 16 years old and found himself stationed in Ansbach, Germany. After his stint in the military, he worked in increasingly greater roles with the Local 343 Plumbers & Pipefitters Union. Starting with an apprenticeship in residential plumbing, he worked his way up to pipefitting projects for biopharmaceutical laboratories and hospitals. Today, Kevin is the Facilities Manager for the Kroc Center and a vital part of the growing church. From the time he walked in the door, he “felt called to be here.” His knowledge has been an asset in laying down the infrastructure for a very large and unique multipurpose facility. We are blessed to have Kevin on our team and we wish him luck in all his endeavors. Kevin is currently in the application process for The Salvation Army Officer Training College.
