La ayuda financiera federal, la ayuda financiera del distrito, Florida prepaid, y otros métodos de pagos son aceptables. any young people miss the opportunity to have a higher education because they do not have enough income to pay for a college degree. That reality must not be an obstacle for them to better themselves. That is why technical education becomes an attractive study option not only because of its shortened terms and less expensive courses but also because of the possibility of the graduates’ entering the labor market sooner. ford a university career, do not sit idly, but start considering technical career education as an alternative to improve your employment skills. Ms. Indira Jadoonandan, a Curriculum Support Specialist at Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College, talked to us about the advantages of this type of education. What is the purpose of the technical education program? Unlike students at traditional colleges, graduates from technical colleges are pre-

pared to immediately fill entry positions. What are the advantages of this type of education offer? Technical colleges produce skilled workers to meet the demands of various industries. Technical education training is directly tied to career tracks such as practical nursing, welding, plumbing, automotive technology, cosmetology, and air-conditioning repair. What are the different technical areas the program offers and how long does it take to graduate from them? Training is available in business administration, commercial arts & 3D animation, culinary arts & baking, construction & apprenticeship, health occupations, information technology, licensed childcare, personal services, public safety & security, manufacturing, and transportation. Most of our programs can be completed within a year. What are the requirements to be admitted to the program and what is the cost? Many of our training programs require a student to be 18 years or older to enter. Only a few programs require that a student must have high school credentials to apply. The average tuition cost for a Florida resident is $3,500 per program. Do you offer financial aid and what are the requirements to access this aid? To apply for financial aid, a student must be a United States resident and must possess a high school diploma. Federal financial aid, district financial aid, Florida prepaid, and other methods of payments are available.

et your imagination run wild. As Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it; remember that all this started with a mouse,” and that is precisely what a group of students are doing with their dreams at the Kendale Lakes Elementary School in South Miami. The Robotics Club, taught twice a week after school to 12 students in grades 3, 4 and 5, has managed to advance so far that they will be participating in the State Robotics Championship VEX IQ to be held in February in Tampa, Florida. How did the minds of those young students achieve that? Through effort and hard work, but above all by letting their imaginations fly— those were the tools they used. The club, which teaches them about robotics, engineering, computer programming and critical leadership skills, was

divided into two teams of six children each. There were two coaches and each team participated separately in the 2016 county competitions. The competitions consisted of three components: First, design a robot with the ability to pick up and move things around. Second, write a computer language to program the robot to be able to make a series of movements without a remote control. And last, develop a technological project which until now no one had invented. The project of the first team consisted of a small duck with an alarm and a camera for a swimming pool, with an application that warns if something has fallen into the pool, thus preventing a child from drowning. The initiative of the second team was to design a rug that is placed next to the bed and when the person gets up, it activates

an alarm letting the caregiver know that the individual is in movement. This is intended to help caregivers of the elderly or the sick. Both teams not only managed to enter the state competition, but received two awards: one for design and the other for excellence. For the teachers of the school, their students are already winners because they have achieved amazing results in such a short time and in such a complex area as robotics, where students must put into practice different types of knowledge. “Our small school has risen so high, even though it is only our second year with the program. That is why our achievement is impressive and has brought tremendous excitement to our school family,” commented Dayami Borges, the school’s Media Specialist and one of the club’s coaches.

he construction of the new Homestead Police Headquarters successfully ended on time and on budget. The 55,000square-foot, three-story facility was constructed specifically for law enforcement operations. On February 15, the new facility will be opening for business. On Saturday February 25, there will be a Grand Opening Ceremony from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will kick off with a community parade at 2 p.m. The community is invited to tour the new facility located at 45 NW 1st Avenue, Homestead, FL 33030, and to munch on free refreshments and to listen to live music. Additionally, the community will have the opportunity to meet and greet the police department personnel who will be protecting the Homestead area. With a vision to revitalize downtown Homestead, the new building was designed by Rodriguez & Quiroga Architects Chartered and built by Munilla Construction Management. According to mayor Jeff Potter, when the voters approved the bond referendum for the new police headquarters, they weren’t just asking us to invest in keeping our police force safe; ad-

ding, “they were asking us to invest in the vision of a new downtown.” The mayor said that he is keeping the promise he made by opening this building on time and on budget. “We are continuing the momentum with our other projects to make downtown Homestead a place to live, work, and play,” said Mayor Porter. The old police station was built in 1912, had toxic radon levels, mold problems and water damage issues, and was outdated and ill-equipped for 21st century law-enforcement operations, putting the life and safety of police personnel at risk. The community approved the bond referendum for the new police headquarters with an overwhelming 74% approval and so provided funding to evacuate police personnel, temporarily relocate police operations, and construct the new police headquarters. “I’ve been here for over 30 years and have seen Homestead grow and change so much. Nothing compares to this outpouring of support we’ve seen to keep our officers safe,” said Chief Rolle.

When You Talk about Shingles, Be Cautious By Rosibel Mena | Translated by Roxana Vega

hingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused when the dormant chickenpox virus, which remains in the body of a person, reactivates suddenly, causing a lot of pain. If you had chickenpox during your childhood or as a young adult, you should get information about shingles because the virus can be reactivated in your body at any time. Dr. Maximiliano Velasco explains below what shingles is.

Dr. Maximiliano Velasco MD

What is shingles? It is a painful skin rash. It may appear on the face, abdomen, and thorax. It is more common in older adults and people with a weak immune system. It occurs in people who have been infected with the varicella zoster virus, even if that happened during childhood. The virus remains dormant in the nerve roots, but when it wakes up, it produces skin lesions known as herpes zoster or shingles.

Is it a contagious disease? Shingles per se is not contagious, but when someone encounters a patient who has active skin lesions, chances are that the person can get chickenpox. Shingles can be transmitted only to people who have never had chickenpox or who have not received the chickenpox vaccine.

What are the symptoms of the disease? Initially, it has burning, pulsating pain and tingling sensations in specific areas of the body. Skin lesions may appear between one to fourteen days after the pain.

What are the causes that can trigger shingles? Some of the causes are stress, weak immune system, including inpatients receiving chemotherapy treatment or taking steroids.

What consequences or effects can the disease leave in the person? The consequence that the disease brings is the pain that can last for months or years. What type of treatment should the patient follow? The treatment that a person should follow is taking antiviral medicines and analgesics. Can the disease be prevented? Prevention is the key. Therefore, it is important to follow the recommendation to get the vaccine, and get a booster after 60 years of age. Also, avoid contact with someone who has the disease, especially if you have not had the vaccine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common complication of shingles is a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). People with PHN have severe pain in the areas where they had the shingles rash, even after the rash clears up. Other symptoms of shingles can include: Fever, Headache, Chills, or Upset stomach. Almost 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles, also known as zoster or herpes zoster, in their lifetime.

Ponte en forma a ritmo de Zumba Por Rosibel Mena | Fotos Joaquin Barbara MD

¿

1. Un excelente forma de quemar calorias. 2. Tonificante corporal: te ayudará a fortalecer tus brazos, piernas, glúteos y abdominales. 3. No te aburres. 4. 24 | Febrero 2017 | Go! Latinos

hat do Queen Letizia of Spain, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Madonna have in common? All of them are fans of the Zumba. Zumba is an exercise training that combines Latin rhythms with simple dance steps and includes resistance exercises. Zumba classes have become popular in recent times as an option to lose weight while having fun dancing. Latin music and cardiovascular exercises are its main characteristics, so there is no room for boredom. “When I came to the gym, I started doing several routines and the one I liked the most was the Zumba class. I have been doing it for two years now and it is like coming to a party wearing sneakers with the best of all the benefits giving me energy and taking off weight,” said Gabriela Otárola, who practices it for one hour, four days a week. Originally, this exercise was created in 2001 by the Colombian Alberto “Beto” Perez, dancer and choreographer, who combined the movements of aerobics with different types of dan-

ces such as cumbia, salsa and merengue Therefore, thanks to that combination, many people enjoy exercising. The name is a derivative of the word rumba, which is what Colombians call colloquially a “party.” The discipline is in more than 140 countries with 12,000 instructors worldwide and more than 12 million people practicing it weekly. So, you can exercise your body by dancing to Daddy Yankee or Marc Anthony or a bolero by Gilberto Santa Rosa. But beyond the dance, the health benefits are many. “Like any other aerobic exercise, it puts the lungs and the heart to work,” said Sebastián Guerrero, Zumba-certified instructor. According to Women's Health magazine, a study conducted by a Danish company revealed that Zumba increased levels of osteocalcin, a protein-related bone density, and that with an hour class, people increased their heart rates and thus, they could accelerate their metabolism and burn more calories. Whatever your age or lifestyle, Zumba fits your needs and will help you enjoy exercise in a different way.

Nine Benefits of Zumba

1. Excellent way to burn calories. 2. Body toning: help strengthen your arms, legs, buttocks and abs. 3. People do not get bored. 4. It makes people happy: exercises stimulate good humor by combining fun rhythms with easy movements. 5. It releases tension. 6. It works for all ages. 7. People achieve amazing results in a short time. 8. Increases tolerance to lactic acid buildup. 9. People can practice it anywhere.

VALENTINE'S DAY

Maneras ecológicas de celebrar el

Día de San Valentín

E

Eco-friendly ways to celebrate

Valentine's Day V

alentine's Day is second only to the holiday season with regard to gift giving. Although this day devoted to love and exchanging gifts can be wasteful, that does not mean those with a mind toward green and simple living should ignore the holiday altogether. In fact, there are plenty of different ways to celebrate Valentine's Day with conservation in mind. • Bee mine: Give a loved one the gift of a jar of raw honey from a nearby bee farm with a pun-themed love note that says "bee mine." • Smart greetings: When choosing greeting cards, select those printed on recycled paper using all-natural inks. Otherwise, create your own paper or digital greetings. If making your own paper greeting, be sure to make it with a reusable material that can be repurposed once Valentine's Day has come and gone. • Purchase an artisan gift. Gifts don't have to be mass-produced items made in factories. Looks for handmade gifts designed by local artisans who don't need fuel to deliver their creations around the world. Or look to gifts that help support a cause, such as crafts made by indigenous people to support their independent living. • Homemade meal: Take to cooking a meal at home for your valentine. Once you settle on his or her favorite foods, be sure to source out local, organic and free-range ingredients. • Give the gift of a massage. Massages can help relieve stress and pain. Because massage is a service rather than a product, there will be no residual waste. Other service gifts include manicure/pedicures, spa treatments and hair salon services. • Adopt an animal. Work with a local kennel to adopt a pet or speak with a favorite conservation group about financially supporting an animal. Sweethearts who are animal lovers may find this to be the ideal gift. • Offer living plants. Cut flowers certainly look beautiful, but they may require many re-

sources for planting, cutting and transporting. That's especially true for non-native, outof-season flowers. Potted plants can live indefinitely as long as they are cared for properly. • Purchase Fair Trade® chocolate. Make sure the chocolate or other gifts being purchased are in line with fair trade policies. Fair Trade Certified® products are made with respect to people and planet. Rigorous social,

environmental and economic standards are employed to promote safe, healthy working conditions, protect the environment, enable transparency, and empower communities to build strong, thriving businesses. Valentine's Day celebrations can be enjoyed in an eco-friendly way that can make this special day even more meaningful to ecoconscious couples.
