La joya oculta del BMX en Miami-Dade

M

Miami South BMX is one of the best-kept secrets in Miami where South Floridians can practice or race at the only BMX track in Miami-Dade.

M

iami South BMX attracts a broad audience from youngsters to veterans and from beginners to pros that have one thing in common: they love BMX. Opened 28 years ago, the track is affiliated to USA BMX, the sole sanctioning body in the United States concerning BMX, with 375 tracks around the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, and more than 70,000 members. Miguel Tapanes, who is the current president of Miami South BMX and a member of the board, says that once riders join the track, they get a one-year membership with USA BMX, which allows them to practice and race at any of the 375 affiliated tracks. “BMX is not just for kids; it is for everyone who wants to ride, practice, compete or just to be active,” adds Tapanes. The facility attracts both first-timers and experienced professionals; however, there are programs especially targeted for beginners in the First 10 Week Riders Development Program, which trains youngsters and those just getting into the sport, every Saturday morning for 10 weeks. After the First 10-Week program, riders can enroll in private classes that are more advanced. “Once the beginning riders finish the first ten weeks, the majority of them go to those classes because they keep improving their skills and getting

better,” explains President Tapanes. All coaches either from the First 10-week program or that provide private lessons are certified by USA BMX. “Once the kids start riding, they are hooked. it’s a family atmosphere where everyone is very helpful; it’s a very laid-back and different experience than other sports,” says Tapanes, who also remarks that “this is another avenue to get the kids out of the house, get them outside in the sun, having fun, making friends and staying active and fit.” On the USA BMX track, Miami South BMX riders take part in the qualification stages either for the U.S. Olympic BMX trials or the UCI World Championship. In fact, three riders from Miami South BMX qualified to represent the United States in the 2018 World BMX Championship, which will be held this month at Baku, Azerbaijan. Brothers Dylan and Aiden Voss, ages 5 and 8, and Christian Meyer, 11, will be joining the national team on behalf of Miami South BMX and Miami-Dade County. Bring your own bike and start jumping hills like a pro. Miami South BMX offers practice and races Thursday and Saturday nights between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. If you or your kids want to give it a try, get to the track at 13050 SW 216th Street, or go to www.usabmx.com/tracks/1875. Clown Doctors brindan risas y

E

Clown Doctors Bring Laughter and

Joy to Children in a Miami Hospital By Andres Ospina | Photos Ervin Palacios

Red Nose Docs, the flagship program of Healthy Humor Inc., plays an essential role in the healing process of hospitalized children at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

T

he cheerful sound of children’s laughter full of joy and love for life is a sure sign of hope. However, when laughter begins to fade, life may be at risk and a health condition may be affecting young lives. Emotional and psychological stress can be the result of a serious illness or a painful therapy. Therefore, Red Nose Docs use the healing power of humor to create smiles when and where they are needed the most, offering the magic of healthcare clowns during a hospital stay to alleviate the stress for young patients, their families and their circle of caregivers. On any given day at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, clown doctors from Red Nose Docs can be seen roaming around the hallways and visiting children. These masters of improvisation and spontaneous play visit each patient at his or her bedside and support the little patients with invaluable humor and energy, encouraging children to keep motivated and to help them cope with the situation. Red Nose Docs is the flagship program of Healthy Humor, an arts organization whose professional performers create moments of joy, wonder, laughter and comfort for hospitalized children and others who are most in need. “We at Healthy Humor use healthcare clowning to help lighten the stress, fear, sadness and isolation of the hospital environment for young patients,” said Dina Paul-Parks, co-founder and chief executive of-

ficer. “We use different circus and theater skills, including juggling, mime, music, storytelling, puppetry, magic, and slapstick in our clown rounds,” explained Doctor Waffle, one the program’s professional performers. These specially-trained performers work in teams of two to create spontaneous, joyful encounters, reintroducing play and fun as natural parts of life and help reduce stress for children. Healthy Humor’s founders have more than 50 years of combined experience in healthcare clowning. They “hope for a world transformed by humor, joy and the power of human connection—a world less burdened by pain and fear,” as it states in their vision statement. The silly and lovable clowns that perform at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital are Dr. Billy, Dr. Rocker, Dr. Waffles, Dr.Bumbles, Nurse LuLu, Dr. Purple and Dr. Schpack. “Research has shown that humor and laughter can have a positive impact on attitudes and health of children,” explained Dina, as there are many extraordinary claims regarding the health benefits associated with humor. For instance, a research made in pediatric clinics in Germany proved that “Hospital clowns can help pediatric patients with the stress of a hospitalization and to circumvent the accompanying feelings of fear, helplessness and sadness, thus supporting the healing process.” Go! Entérese qué tipo de préstamo con

T

20 | Junio 2018 | Go! Latinos

What Kind of Home Equity Loan Should You Get?

B

By Andres Ospina

There are two types of home equity loans: closed-end loans and lines of credit. These are also known as “second mortgages” because they’re secured by your original first mortgage.

Julia Romero

oth the home equity loan or the home equity line of credit (HELOC) are based on the home equity of your mortgage. To find out how much equity you have built on your property, you must calculate the difference between the appraised value of your home and the amount of money you owe on your mortgage. The more equity you have, the more financing options may be available to you. “For instance, if you have equity in your home and you want to buy another property, you can take the equity out of your first mortgage and buy the other house by using a home equity loan,” says Julia Romero, Branch Manager at Center State Bank. Therefore, a home equity loan provides a lump-sum withdrawal that may be more suitable for your situation. Additionally, a home equity loan, sometimes called a term loan, is a one-time lump sum that is paid off over a set amount of time, with a fixed interest rate and the same payments each month. The

best-case scenarios for this kind of loan are property purchases or money for special occasions like your daughter’s wedding next month, when you know how much you need and the exact time it will take you to pay it off. On the other hand, “If you want to do the new roof on your house because it got damaged during the hurricane, or you want to put in those brandnew floors, or you want to redo the bathroom, the home equity line of credit works perfectly,” explains Julia Romero. “A line of credit is ideal for home improvement for which you may need money over an extended period like a project that may take three years or more to finish. It gives you the flexibility to borrow the amount you need when you need it,” she added. A HELOC works more like a credit card; you can borrow up to a certain amount for the life of the loan—a time limit set by the lender. During that time, you can withdraw money as you need it. As you pay off the balance, your credit revolves, and you can use it again. This means you can borrow again if you need to, and you can borrow as little or as much as you need throughout your draw period, up to the credit limit you establish. The interest rates on a home equity line of credit vary and fluctuate over the life of the loan. Payments may change based on how much credit you have used and interest-rate fluctuations. According to the IRS, a bonus point—if you want to choose a line of credit over a loan—is that the interest on your HELOC may be tax-deductible if you use the money to buy, build or substantially improve your home. “To qualify for any of these home equity loans, the customer must be a permanent U.S. resident and hold a valid social security number. The lender will usually check your credit score, employment history, and your monthly income and debts,” added Romero. For more information and advice on the type of home equity loan to apply for, please contact Julia Romero, Branch Manager at Center State Bank at 305-252-2211. Go! Latinos | June 2018 | 21

22 | Junio 2018 | Go! Latinos

Simple Ways to Make

Father’s Day Special for Your Dad

raditionally a day of breakfast in bed, lasagna dinners and gifts of ties and socks, this June 18 why not do something a little more creative that gifts to celebrate your dad on Father's Day. Here are simple ways you can make this Father’s Day special for your dad, without buying gifts. Take Him Outside Think of a fun activity that your dad likes and plan a day around it. A day outdoors is always well spent, so if your dad likes nature, take him hiking, biking or fishing. Pack a picnic so after your activity you can eat together outside. You could even find a picnic area with a fire pit so you can have a campfire and roast hot dogs or marshmallows as a wonderful finish to your day outdoors. Have Fun in the City If your dad is more of a city guy, plan a day complete with city activities. Perhaps he likes museums or live music, so take him to that museum or exhibit he’s always been meaning to visit, and out for dinner afterward. Browse your local events for evening music events as there are usually a lot of local events during Fathers’ Day, including brunch specials and discounted tickets. If your dad prefers vehicles and speed why not take him go-karting? Find a local go-kart track and spend the day

zipping around. You can usually get in for less than $20 per race. Take Away the Pressure Your dad is likely always doing something! Whether he’s fixing things, cooking for the family, or working, chances are he’s on the go more than you know. So offering to do those ‘must do’ tasks for him means he can focus on what he wants to do for the day. It’s a simple way to fee him from a day of chores and let him put his feet up. Give Him Alone Time Whether it’s watching sports on TV, going for a run, reading or taking a nap, give your dad some valuable alone time. He works hard, and some time to himself will probably be much appreciated. Pizza! Treat your dad with homemade pizza for Father’s Day. Customize the pizza to your dad’s favourite type, and enjoy spending time at home together. After, you can relax and watch movies, or maybe even some home movies. Spend time together No matter what activity you choose, the one thing he will likely appreciate most is spending time with his family and loved ones. It’s the one thing you can give him that doesn’t cost a thing, yet it means the world. Happy Father's Day!

Teen-Driver Involved Crashes Kill

10 People a Day During 100 Deadliest Days

M

By Matt Nasworthy - The Auto Club Group - Florida

Speed and Nighttime Driving are Major Factors ore than 1,050 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver in 2016 during the 100 Deadliest Days, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That is an average of 10 people per day – a 14 percent increase compared to the rest of the year, according to data analyzed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. As school lets out for summer, AAA stresses the importance of preparing and educating inexperienced teen drivers for some of the most dangerous driving days of the year. “The number of fatal crashes involving teen drivers during the summer is an important traffic safety concern and research shows that young drivers are at greater risk and have higher crash rates compared to older and more experienced drivers,” said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety executive director. “Through education, proper training, and involvement of parents, we can help our young drivers to become better and safer drivers, which in turn keeps the roads safer for everyone.” Speed and nighttime driving are significant factors contributing towards the number of crashes, and subsequently fatalities, involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days

(statistics based on 2016 NHTSA FARS data as analyzed by the AAA Foundation): Nighttime Driving • 36 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities involving teen drivers occurred between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. • 1 in 10 of all motor vehicle nighttime crash fatalities involved a teen driver • Data show a 22 percent increase in the average number of nighttime crashes per day involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days compared to the rest of the year Speeding • 1 in 10 of all motor vehicle speed-related fatalities involved a teen driver • 29 percent of all motor vehicle deaths involving a teen driver were speed-related “Since crashes that involve a teen driver can impact anyone on the road, it is critical for parents to be fully engaged in what their new driver is doing behind the wheel,” said Matt Nasworthy, Florida Public Affairs Director for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “That starts by setting a good example and driving safely themselves.” In preparation for the dangerous summer driving period, AAA encourages parents to educate their teens and themselves about risky driving behavior. Parents should: • Discuss with teens early and often the dangers of risky driving situations such as speeding, distractions and nighttime driving. • Teach by example and minimize your own risky behavior when behind the wheel. • Make a parent-teen driving agreement that sets family rules for teen drivers. Consider setting driving limits that are stronger than a state’s law, and enforce those limits. TeenDriving.AAA.com has a variety of tools, including licensing and state law information, to help prepare parents and teens for not only the dangerous summer driving season, but also all year long. The site also features new interactive widgets highlighting teen driving risks, as well as a social host quiz. The online AAA StartSmart program also offers great resources for parents on how to become effective in-car coaches as well as advice on how to manage their teen’s overall driving privileges. Strengthening teen driving laws to increase roadway safety is a top priority for AAA. The Association’s advocacy efforts are helping to protect teens by working to pass graduated driver licensing laws, including seat belt requirements, wireless device bans and nighttime driving and passenger restrictions, in states across the country.
