espite a slight drop in college attendance amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the large majority of high school graduates go directly to college upon completing high school. According to data from the National Centers for Education Statistics (NCES), enrollment in four-year colleges has more than doubled over the last 50 years, going from a little over five million students in 1970 to nearly 11 million in 2019. At the same time, Census Bureau data shows that the share of the U.S. adult population with a four-year college degree has more than tripled, from 11% in 1970 to 36% in 2019. For many, a college degree offers the most straightforward path toward securing a job and increasing pay. Research from Georgetown University suggests that 35% of job openings in 2020 required at least a bachelor’s degree and data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a greater than 67% pay difference, on average, between high-school graduates and college degree holders. While higher levels of education are necessary for many jobs, the cost to get this education has increased dramatically in the last several decades. In 1979, the average annual total cost of attendance—including tuition, fees, room, and board—for full-time undergraduates was $9,307 (in constant 2019-2020 dollars). By 2019, this rate had nearly tripled, to more than $25,000. So rather than focusing on published sticker prices, prospective students and their families should focus on net price, which better reflects the dollar amount paid by those who can’t afford to pay full price. To determine the states with the most expensive college tuition, researchers at Self Financial analyzed data from the National Center for Educational Statistics. The researchers ranked states according to the average net price for students awarded aid, defined as the total published price of at-
tendance for full-time, in-state undergraduates less the average amount of grant and scholarship aid received. Researchers also calculated the average published total price, the average published price of tuition, fees, books, and supplies, the average published price of room and board, and total public undergraduate enrollment. Only public, four-year, degree-granting institutions were included in the analysis. The analysis found that in Florida, students pay an average net price of $10,594 for college tuition. Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Trail Councilwoman Jenifer N. Bailey speaks on the progress of the massive project, which is a coordination of efforts by the City of Homestead, Miami-Dade County, the Florida Department of Transportation, and the National Park Service.
W
hat is the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Trail? This isn’t your average cyclist and pedestrian trail. The BiscayneEverglades Greenway Trail is the first of its kind to connect two major national parks, not to mention the extensive amount of land it covers. Visitors will be able to walk or ride along a 42-mile paved loop full of historical, cultural, and natural features. Phase one of the construction plan is depicted in a useful graphic here. With so many residents already enjoying existing trails and natural sights, this project is only expected to take the area to the next level, attracting valuable investment opportunities and other benefits to the community. Councilwoman Bailey explains that this project has been an ongoing effort by the hardworking elected officials of Homestead since the City first pledged support for the idea in 1994. She notes that former Councilwoman Waldman and Councilman Shelley played a vital role in the planning efforts to get this project where it is today. In December 2021, the city of Homestead announced construction had begun on the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Trail. Excitement mounts as the City of Homestead welcomes its first semi-pro soccer team.
T
he place that football holds in Latino culture is undeniable - a common interest across borders and languages, bringing together friends and families, teams and communities. Now, the City of Homestead welcomes its very own semi-pro team: Homestead FC USA. According to the team’s head coach, Roberto Trotta, the community is excited and can expect great things from the team. “Without a doubt,” he said, “the project we are launching is very good.” As a defender, Trotta played for several clubs in Argentina, as well as the 1995 National team. He has also played for clubs in Ecuador, Mexico, Spain, and Italy. In addition, he has managed teams in Argentina and coached there and in the United Arab Emirates. With these credentials and his wealth of knowledge and experience, he is sure to steer Homestead FC USA to victory. Trotta stated that the team’s top priority is to compete at a good level. “The professional level that we are building will allow us to grow,” he said, continuing that the team is “focused on doing things in a consolidated manner, building at the best possible pace, and understanding that we are part of a long-term project.” Playing in the National Soccer League (NSL) Elite Division, Homestead FC USA trains at Kendall Soccer Park as well as at the Homestead Air Reserve Park, but will soon call Harris Field Park Stadium ‘home’. The team’s name was chosen to clearly represent the city, and the uniform colors white, blue, and red - call to mind the colors of the United States flag, imbuing a sense of pride and community. Although the team is still new and sure to face challenges on the road ahead, Trotta remains confident. “We are not going to lose, because the key is to generate

What You Need to Know About
Cholesterol
U
nderstanding and improving cholesterol is important for people of all ages, including children and teens. Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels can help keep your heart healthy and lower your chances of getting heart disease or having a stroke. High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. In fact, about 38% of adults in the United States are diagnosed with high cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. Understanding what cholesterol is, the role it plays, when to get screened and how to manage it are important aspects of protecting your overall health and prevent a heart attack or stroke. Understanding Cholesterol A waxy, fat-like substance created by the liver and consumed from meat, poultry and dairy products, cholesterol isn’t inherently bad for you. In fact, your body needs it to build cells and make vitamins and other hormones. However, too much cholesterol circulating in the blood can pose a problem. The two types of cholesterol are low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is considered “bad,” and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which can be thought of as “good” cholesterol. Too much of the “bad” kind, or not enough of the “good,” increases the risk of cholesterol slowly building up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Cholesterol can join with other substances to form a thick, hard deposit on the inside of the arteries called plaque. This can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible – a condition known as atherosclerosis. If a blood clot forms, it may be more likely to get stuck in one of these narrowed arteries, resulting in a heart attack or stroke. Understanding Risk Your body naturally produces all the LDL it needs. An unhealthy lifestyle can make your body produce more LDL than required. Behaviors that may negatively affect your cholesterol levels include lack of physical activity, obesity, eating an unhealthy diet and smoking or exposure to tobacco smoke. In addition to unhealthy habits, which are the cause of high LDL cholesterol for most people, some people inherit genes from their parents or grandparents – called familial hypercholes-

terolemia (FH) – that cause them to have too much cholesterol and can lead to premature atherosclerotic heart disease. If you have a family history of FH or problems related to high cholesterol, it’s important to get your levels checked. Getting Cholesterol Checked Adults age 20 and older should have their cholesterol and other traditional risk factors checked every 4-6 years as long as their risk remains low. After age 40, your health care professional will use an equation to calculate your 10-year risk of heart attack or stroke. People with cardiovascular disease, and those at elevated risk, may need their cholesterol and other risk factors assessed more often. Managing Cholesterol If you have high cholesterol, understanding your risk for heart disease and stroke is one of the most important things you can do, along with taking steps to lower your cholesterol. Often, simply changing certain behaviors can help bring your numbers into line. Eating a heart-healthy diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean or plant-based protein, fish and nuts while limiting red and
processed meats, sodium and sugar-sweetened foods and beverages is one of the best ways to lower your cholesterol. While grocery shopping, look for the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check mark to help identify foods that can be part of an overall healthy eating pattern. Other lifestyle changes include losing weight, quitting smoking and becoming more physically active, as a sedentary lifestyle can lower HDL. To help lower both cholesterol and high blood pressure, experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week, such as walking, biking or swimming. For some people, lifestyle changes may prevent or manage unhealthy cholesterol levels. For others, medication may also be needed. Work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan that’s right for you. If medication is required, be sure to take it as prescribed. Controlling your cholesterol may be easier than you think.
