The Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards:
Grants to Latino Students Who Wish to Go to University By Andrés Ospina
T
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards program makes it easier for Latino students to access college and advance along their professional paths. This is the case of Elisa Juarez, 2001 award winner in the Miami region.
he Youth Awards was founded in 1998 by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF), and over the past 20 years, the program has awarded nearly three thousand grants, and 100 percent of recipients have moved on to college. Elisa Juarez, for instance, is one of the successful recipients who has excelled in her professional and academic life after receiving the award. In 2001 when she was a senior at Coral Reef High School in Miami, she was honored with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Award in the science and technology category. The Youth Awards honor Latino high school seniors who excel in the classroom and community as Elisa did. The awardees receive grants for their education or an idea or community project. “While in high school, I did community service projects and was deeply involved in science projects with a local university and Jackson Memorial Hospital. I applied for the award and received the educational grant that helped me go to university,” Elisa remembers. The Youth Awards take place in 10 regions across the country, and awardees are selected from thousands of applicants for their excellence in various categories including Business & Entrepreneurship, Community Service, Education, Healthcare & Science, Media & Entertainment, and Technology & Engineering. The average GPA for the students is nearly 4.0. Elisa graduated with honors from Brown University with a dual degree in biology and Latin American studies. Later, she got deeply involved in building resilient and thriving communities through corporate social responsibility (CSR), went to graduate school and got an MBA from the IAE Business School with coursework in social entrepreneurship and CSR. Now, she works for Target in the Corporate Social Responsibility Division. Elisa has kept a close relationship with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation since she received the Youth Award. In the past, she managed HHF’s award-winning Latinos on Fast Track
(LOFT) workforce development program and currently sits on the national board and acts as one of the main advisers to the president. The 2018 recipients who have been selected from a pool of almost 13,000 applicants will become part of the HHF leadership cycle in which they will have the opportunity to be mentored by past awardees. “The most important thing about the award, in addition to the recognition and the scholarship, is to be part of this great family that is passionate to help their community and that invests in the future of young Latinos,” she
says. And she concluded, “It is important to remember that the future is Latino, that is why we invite young people who identify with our culture, who have a passion for their community and wish to move on professionally, to be part of our family and to get involved in our projects. Through their voice, we can achieve the changes we need in this country.” If you want to apply for the 2019 Youth Award, please visit www.hhfyouthawards.com. Go! Latinos | January 2019 | 9

PLACES TO VISIT
the Last Railroad Village in Florida, an Ideal Place for Your Events and Get-togethers
H
The village had a major makeover after Hurricane Andrew and its devastation. The place refused to die, and now Cauley Square is a perfect spot where family and community come together.
urricanes Andrew, Wilma and Katrina have nothing on Cauley Square,” said owner Frances Varela, 69. Cauley Square’s resilient spirit rose among those tragedies and currently holds 19 old Florida cottages, shops, restaurants, gardens and galleries. It’s the perfect spot to relax and appreciate the beauty of an old railroad town just south of Miami-Dade. “Although many things have tried to bring this place down, it hasn’t fallen and will not succumb. It’s trials like those that have made this place so strong and resilient in spirit,” Varela told the Miami Herald in 2016. Cauley Square is a former railroad village bought in 1903 by pioneer farmer William Cauley and used to house workers for Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway while in the railroad expansion to Key West. After a steady economic decline due to the Great Depression, World War II and weather disasters, Miami-Dade County condemned the site for demolition. However, the late preservationist Mary Ann Ballard bought the property in 1949 and gradually preserved the square, ultimately acquiring the “historic site” title from the county in 1994. After her death, her children sold the property to Honduran native Frances Varela in 2001. Varela, a woman who spent her career in construction, poured millions into refurbishing the grounds. The restoration took almost a decade and continued until recent years. The main building, that used to be a warehouse and an illicit liquor store during the early 20th century, was recently restored. Sitting at the corner of U.S.1., south of Miami-Dade, Cauley Square is now the perfect location for family and friends’ get-togethers. Visitors can spend their day shopping at the antique and specialty shops, enjoying fresh cuisine and home-cooked food at one of its world-class restaurants, casually strolling the garden paths or admiring its fountains, sculptures and private patios, and so much more. Varela gave it a special and unique touch by building a small chapel to show gratitude for the blessings received in her life. The chapel is a beautiful spot for people to rest for quiet reflection. “Our gardens and natural scenery, among foliage, flowers, birds and fountains, are a perfect setting for wedding venues and vow renewals. We take pride in helping couples design the event of their dreams—providing just the right atmosphere to make an unforgettable moment,” said Ivette Mejia, Marketing Director at Cauley Square. Additionally, Cauley Square offers a variety of weekly, monthly and yearly special events for all ages and families, including special events like festivals and holiday parties such as Santa is coming to Cauley Square, Easter, Valentines day, classic car shows, Cauley Square Jeeps and Trucks Show, bike shows, Halloween, and much more, not to mention the yearlong corporate events. This January 13, 2019, Cauley Square holds the New Year’s Family Funday event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cauley Square is also part of The Redland Tropical Trail, a tour featuring a circuit of stops, tastings, and sightseeing, with several attractions nearby, bringing visitors from across the country and state.

The Historic Seminole Theatre Will Host
3RG Miami’s Concert

RG Miami (Three Ricans and a Girl) will be making its way back to The Historic Seminole Theatre in Homestead, FL, with a concert on January 26, 2019, that is sure to deliver something fresh for new and old fans alike. Presented by Rylo Productions and sponsored by Airboat in Everglades, Coquito by Things to Nibble, Big Cypress Distillery, Cake World Bakery, Lynne Brooks and Associates, Epiko Magazine, Champion Shave, Perez and Altieri Law Firm, and Open Stage Club—the band has greatly contributed to the revival of Spanish Rock in South Florida. During December, I had the chance to sit down with RyLo, founder and front man of 3RG Miami, to get a better insight into the band, a preview of their upcoming concert, and what’s in store for them down the road. The band that many locals have grown to adore was founded six years ago and quickly became immensely popular in South Florida. Playing a mix of both Spanish and English songs, the band has performed in cities around Florida to include Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Daytona, Naples, Florida Keys and Tampa. Two years ago, the band found success and popularity on an international level with the release of their first single “Loca.” The song has been streamed worldwide by thousands of fans. With these promising developments, the band released their first ballad “No Me Digas.” The new single went on to attract over one million views on Facebook and was shared over 5,000 times. The song is currently streamed around the world. 3RG Miami continued to be an international hit and knew that having people listening to their music in so many countries
was a great contribution to the South Florida scene. “We are blessed and very fortunate to have people listening to our music around the world; it means a lot to us,” said RyLo. “We’re a local band with our members from Homestead and Miami. It’s our hometown, and the Historic Seminole Theatre is the venue we’ve chosen over the past three years to perform a yearly concert for our local fans. It’s a state-of-the-art venue with topnotch staff,” he continued. Performing throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties, they have developed a very “Miami” sound. “What makes us different is our unique style that puts a Latin
twist on every song we play.
He tenido mucha práctica".

Easy Close Advantage - Down Payment Assistance. Smart Millennial
Uses Down Payment Assistance for New Home
ntil this summer, Matt Berna had an unusual tradition: Every year, he moved to a new apartment. After doing this for 9 years, the 27year-old inside sales professional decided enough was enough. "Yeah, I've been moving since I was 18," says Matt, "and I was getting sick of it. I'm really good at packing and moving, though. I've had lots of practice." Part of the reason Matt moved so frequently was that he enjoyed getting to know different areas of United States. It also taught him which neighborhoods he'd want to live in on a more permanent basis. "After working in the mortgage industry for three years, I became very aware of what a smart financial decision it is to buy a home," explains Matt. So, he began house hunting while living with a roommate and paying $525 each for rent. Because Matt owns a motorcycle, a house with a garage was a must. Unfortunately, the area he wanted was comprised of older homes - many without garages. And, he was unwilling to go above his price range. As a young first-time homebuyer with student loan debt, Matt didn't want to overextend himself. He also didn't have enough in his savings for a 20 percent down payment. So, when he finally found his four-bedroom home with a garage, and in his price range, he decided to apply for a low-down-payment loan. His goal was to put down five percent and use private mortgage insurance, which is required on conventional loans with less than a 20 percent down payment. Yet Matt was still a bit uncomfortable about using all of his savings for his down payment and closing costs. He had the money, but wondered what would happen if his bike or new home needed expensive repairs. Matt wanted to ensure that he still had a rainy-day fund just in case, so he researched down payment assistance
After finding the right home for himself and his motorcycle, first-time homebuyer Matt Berna utilized a down payment assistance program for his down payment, keeping his savings intact for a rainy day.
programs. While there are different types of programs available, Matt took advantage of the Easy Close Advantage - Down Payment Assistance program. In order to be eligible, buyers must be purchasing an owner-occupied home and meet specific requirements, such as income levels, credit ratings and home-purchase price limits. Matt easily qualified for the program, and closed on his home in July 2018. His monthly mortgage payment is $1,292, which includes escrow and $59 for the down-payment-assistance loan.
But what does a smart millennial do with a big four-bedroom house and a lot of former roommates? Yep. Even though Matt could afford the mortgage himself, he invited two of his buddies to live with him. Now, his roomies pay $550 each per month and Matt pays only $192 of the mortgage, so he's saving money while building equity. As Matt confides, "I see this house as a really good investment."
NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
Why
Personal Training? E
ach year on January 1, many people resolve to lose weight and get healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 70 percent of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight, including 35 percent who are considered obese. After the holiday season, when social schedules ramp up and diets might be ignored, it's no surprise that many people are ready to start new fitness regimens. While it's easy to push oneself into the toughest and most intense workouts in order to super-charge weight loss or fitness gains, this could be a mistake that raises the average person's risk of injury. Instead, people should work with a personal trainer who can guide their workouts. Personal trainers are fitness professionals who are trained to teach others how to exercise. These people are educated in correct posture and technique so that they can instruct how to do exercises correctly and efficiently. Furthermore, personal trainers can help people reach their fitness goals with an understanding of how to exercise safely with various chronic conditions or injuries. There are many other reasons to work with a personal trainer. • Motivation: Personal trainers can offer encouragement to get a person started and continue with a workout routine. Furthermore, knowing someone is there to hold them accountable can ensure the client is consistent in showing up to do the work necessary. • Define fitness goals: Personal trainers can help people focus on goals that are specific and realistic to achieve measurable success. • Showcase proper form: Understanding how to do exercises properly reduces the risk of injury and increases the efficacy of workouts. • Offer variety: Sometimes workouts can become boring, and people become complacent. Personal trainers may alter routines to keep clients interested. • Make time work: Experienced personal trainers will know how to maximize the time clients have. This can be advantageous for people who have limited time to exercise. Personal trainers can help fitness fans achieve maximum results, exercise properly and form good habits.
