8 | Octubre 2018 | Go! 8 Tips to Make Your Halloween a Spooktacular One!
F
By Corina Bethencourt and Isabela Morales Founders of Pixie Dreams Inc
rom yummy treats to costumes, Halloween is one of the most fun holidays for kids and families. It provides an opportunity for families to bond and enjoy trick or treating together. To help make it a spooktacular Halloween this year, follow these simple tips: 1. Bright is the new black; plan on using costumes that are bright and reflective to easily identify your child when trick or treating. Avoid oversize clothing that will make it hard to walk. Comfort comes first! 2. Use non-toxic paint and avoid masks or big head pieces that may obstruct your child’s vision. 3. Give your child a flashlight with fresh batteries in case she or he needs to use it when it gets dark. You can also use hands-free Go Run Lights used by runners, which work even better because your child will not have to hold them. 4. Before heading out the door, talk to your child about safety. Remind him or her to stay near you always and look both ways before crossing streets. 5. Kids 12 and under should be accompanied by an adult. If child is over 12, make sure he/she has a way to reach you via cell phone and will be trick or treating with a group of friends. 6. Establish a planned route and set a curfew for children over 12. 7. Have your child wait until you’ve approved the treats they have received. Discard anything that is not fully wrapped. Children under four should not have popcorn or hard candy due to choking hazards. 8. Take great pictures to cherish the memories down the road. Go! Latinos | October 2018 | 9

Have all your real estate questions answered in one place, but also could receive up to $17,500 in down payment assistance.
he whole landscape of real estate has changed, and homebuying seems to be an overly complicated process. Homebuyers face combined multiple steps that may include mortgage application and approval, making an offer, competing with other buyers, contract negotiation, a due diligence period and (hopefully) a successful closing. Simplifying the homebuying process and explaining its key elements are necessary. That’s why The Keyes Company and Capitals Partners Mortgage are having for the first time in Homestead a Homebuyer Bootcamp, where on-site professionals will answer questions on real estate, mortgage options, insurance and home inspections, among others. At this seminar, homebuyers not only will learn the basics of homeownership but also could receive up to $17,500 in down payment assistance and/or grants to help with down payment and closing costs. “Whether you want to know how much money you need to buy your home or how home inspections protect you or even how to get the right insurance, professional realtors will answer all your questions in a condensed, knowledge-packed seminar, to help you find the best homes,” said District Sales Manager Tony Garcia at the Keyes Company. The Keyes Company is Florida’s #1 independently owned real estate company, operating since 1926. Keyes’ fifty-plus offices are distributed throughout six counties—Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach,
Martin, St. Lucie and Volusia—with more than three thousand talented and dedicated realtors, as it says on their website. The other organizer, Capital Partners Mortgage, has been in existence since 2008 and is helping the community to make their homeownership dreams come true, offering hundreds of loan choices to their customers. “Our strength lies in the knowledge and experience of our loan officers, who have been in the industry for decades and have successfully handled all types of home buying situations,” explained Isabel Serra, its sales manager and
team leader. Summing up, a homebuyer seminar can be key to pointing out steps that homebuyers may have previously been unaware of and reviewing the challenging aspects to help identify the right timing and location for a successful home purchase. This free home-buying seminar will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, at The Keyes Company office in Homestead. If you want to reserve your free seat at this seminar, call their office at (305) 247-7221 or register at www.eventleaf.com/homesteadhomebuyerseminar.

Livan Concepcion: “We strongly believe in the Homestead community”.
ebruary 12, 2002, is an important date for Livan Concepcion, as it is the day when his martial arts academy, American Ju-Jitsu Center, first started. Today, it is known as one of the best martial arts academies in Florida and the nation. The American Ju-Jitsu Center has earned a place among the best academies as it holds three karate world championships and approximately 150 state and national titles. The academy’s good name is due to the achievement of its students who excel in the competitions in leagues to which they belong: the Florida Black Belt Association (FBBA), and the North American Sport Karate Association (NASKA). Furthermore, the American Ju-Jitsu Center is proud not only of the results achieved at various competitions but also for being a family business that has grown hand in hand with the Homestead community. “We strongly believe in the Homestead community,” explains its founder Livan Concepcion; therefore, all employees are students or their family members, and the family atmosphere proves this is not a typical martial arts academy. At this family business, Livan and his wife Mileydis are the directors; and their daughters, Marielys and Leylani, are their best students. The two girls were awarded world champions in a NASKA championship last year. Marielys is 23 years old and is fourth dan (level of expertise), and Leylani, 18, is already second dan in karate. Livan is the chief Instructor and is currently the only martial arts instructor within the Greater Florida City/City of Homestead area that holds a valid Florida Department of Education Teaching License. He also holds a fifth-degree black belt in black lotus ju-jitsu and a second-degree black belt in atemi ryu.
Moreover, Mileydis Concepcion has over ten years of experience in the field of education and has worked as a Dropout Prevention Specialist for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. She is licensed as a massage therapist and holds a certification in early childhood education. Their education background honors his motto “Learning Should Not Stop When School Is Out,” which is derived from its flagship program, the After-School Program, in which they pick up children from school, help them with their homework, to finish with a traditional karate class until the parents arrive. Nowadays, the After-School Program has approximately 75 students and about 125 other students attend other school programs, like the competition classes, tradi-
tional ju-jitsu classes and programs for adults and teenagers that include self-defense lessons and fitness training sessions. “As more students started to compete, the attendance increased, so we decided to focus on training for competition,” says Livan, who points out that there is currently a 20-member competition group, ages 5 to 25 years old. In the future, when their daughters graduate from university, the Concepcion family plans to expand their academy. At the moment they focus on preparing their students for the Panamerican International Competition in Miami Beach that will take place in November. As always, they hope to win and proudly represent the Homestead community.

¿Qué son los síndromes de cáncer hereditario?
P
Latinos
HEALTH
What are hereditary cancer syndromes?
F
ew families can say they have not been affected by cancer. But some people may feel as though a certain type of cancer runs in their families. In certain instances, such suspicions are warranted. According to the National Cancer Institute, hereditary cancer syndromes are disorders that may predispose individuals to developing certain cancers. The NCI notes that researchers have associated mutations in specific genes with more than 50 hereditary cancer syndromes. Before people, or even entire families, begin thinking that a certain type of cancer runs in their families, it's important to first examine certain lifestyle choices to determine if such factors, and not gene mutations, are responsible. In fact, the NCI notes that hereditary cancer syndromes play a role in just 5 to 10 percent of all cancers. Tobacco use is one lifestyle choice that can cause similar cancers to develop among family members. Smoking greatly increases a person's risk of developing
cancer, and even that person's nonsmoking family members may have a higher risk for cancer due to exposure to secondhand smoke. Other factors, such as poor diet, also may increase the likelihood that people within a family may get cancer. Neither instance, however, is the result of hereditary cancer syndrome. People who suspect they might be at risk for hereditary cancer syndromes should express their concerns to their physicians. Primary care physicians and other health professionals will then work to determine if patients are at risk. If a person is identified as at risk for developing hereditary cancer syndromes, then he or she may be referred for genetic counseling and risk assessment, and certain tests also may be conducted as physicians work to develop a plan to manage risk. A patient's family history helps physicians determine if there is a risk for hereditary cancer syndrome. The NCI notes that physicians may look for the following
features of hereditary cancer in the patient's family. • One first-degree relative with the same or a related tumor and any of a number of features specific to the patient (a list of individual features of hereditary cancer is available at www.cancer.gov). • Two or more first-degree relatives with tumors of the same site. • Two or more first-degree relatives with tumor types belonging to a known familial cancer syndrome. • Two or more first-degree relatives with rare tumors. • Three or more relatives in two generations with tumors of the same site or etiologically related sites. Hereditary cancer syndromes are relatively uncommon, but that does not discount the importance of determining one's risk for such cancers. The NCI notes that finding out one is at risk of hereditary cancer can potentially have life-saving implications. More information on hereditary cancers is available at www.cancer.gov. Go! Potential benefits of a vegan diet

Beneficios potenciales de una dieta vegana
U
22 | Octubre 2018 | Go! Latinos
nutritious diet is an integral component of a healthy lifestyle. One of the great things about eating right is there are many ways to do so. A healthy diet that works for some people might not work for others with different tastes, and it doesn't have to. Eating right can boost immune systems and help people be more productive, and some people even tailor their healthy diets to align with their personal beliefs. One such example is veganism. Adherents to veganism do not eat or use animal products, and many do so to advocate for the ethical treatment of animals. Regardless of why people choose vegan diets, the potential health benefits of such decisions are myriad. • Shed excess weight: Vegan diets may help people shed excess weight. A 2015 study published in the journal Nutrition found that vegan diets may result in greater weight loss than more modest recommendations. The vegan diets used in the study did not require participants to limit their caloric intake, though many might have simply by the nature of the vegan diet, which is packed with satisfying foods full of nutrients such as fiber that can help people feel full and maintain that feeling of fullness for long periods of time. • Improve kidney function: Studies have indicated that people with diabetes who replace the meat in their diets with plant protein may reduce their risk for poor kidney function. One such study, published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, concluded that, while more studies are necessary, substituting soy protein for animal proteins usually decreases hyperfiltration in diabetic subjects and may reduce albumin excretion as well. • Protect against certain cancers: The World Health Organization says that roughly one-third of all instances of cancer across the globe can be prevented if people make the right lifestyle choices. That includes their choice in diets. Due to the nature of vegan diets, vegans tend to consume considerable amounts of fruits and vegetables. That's good news, as an analysis of data from the Health Survey for England found that eating seven or more portions of fresh fruits and vegetables every day can reduce a person's risk of dying from cancer by as much as 15 percent. • Reduce risk for heart disease: Fruits, vegetables and fiber also have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease. A study from researchers in Japan found that intakes of plant-based foods, particularly fruits, were associated with reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease. Vegan diets may necessitate an adjustment period when starting out. But over time, the benefits of such diets are numerous.

Take the Leap with SkyDive Miami!
s the thrilling and adrenaline-fueled act of skydiving somewhere on your bucket list? Or maybe it’s already an activity you indulge in weekly? Whichever it may be, a small but reputable skydiving facility known as Skydive Miami is here to help. Nestled in the Redlands, this hidden gem is sure to become your destination for a Friday night out. The art/sport of skydiving has existed for centuries! During the 1100s, the Chinese were one of the first cultures who executed the idea of jumping off a cliff or static object, though it would take a lot longer for modern day skydiving to be invented. Among Leonardo da Vinci, who is credited with inventing skydiving in 1483, Andre-Jacques Garnerin’s first successful parachute jump in 1797 and modern military applications, skydiving developed into what it is today. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Skydive Miami in the greater Redlands area and spoke with Fred Whitsitt, the company’s vice president and manager. “There has actually been skydiving at the Homestead General Airport for 50 years, and we took it over in 1998. We’ve also been a part of the Redland Trail since its inception around ten years ago, with Schnebly’s Winery and Robert is Here being a couple of our more famous neighbors. Now, on the Homestead General Airport that we call home, we share this space with The Orient Express where you can learn how to fly an airplane and Miami Gliders where you can learn how to ride a glider.” As exhilarating as skydiving may sound, many are still hesitant to take the leap (pun intended). “My advice to those who are apprehensive of trying it, is to research, talk to people who have done it before, watch videos of it online and then call a professional establishment like ours and ask any questions you have. You can also contact us via our website, social media or email. We here at Skydive Miami are sincere, safety-conscious and fun oriented. hing for you.” Before calling it a day with Fred and his extremely welcoming facility, I was able to hear from a few of the numerous people prepping to take the dive from high up. Justine, an avid jumper, was eager to get back out there. “This experience has been great, and everyone here is very friendly. It’s scary at first, but you grow more comfortable the more you do it. I try to come out every weekend.” Francisco Alvarez and his wife Nadia, who thought she was going out for a day of shopping/eating out for her birthday, had this to say, “You have to try it at least once in your life.” Skydiving is a weekend (or weekday) outing that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Skydive Miami is open six days a week (Wednesday to Monday), weekends 8 a.m. to sunset and weekdays 10 a.m. to sunset. Offering USPA Certified Skydive Instructors, First Time Tandem Skydives, Student IAF and AFF Training Programs, Turbine Cessna Caravans (seating 15 skydivers), a full minute of ‘freefall’ from 13,500 ft. and views from the Florida Keys to Miami Beach.
