Scripture Hebrews 2:5-3:1 Consider Jesus 1. Apostle • An apostle is a "sent one." • Jesus is the sent one from God, with His mission. 2. High Priest • A merciful and faithful high priest (v18) is one who is understanding and sympathetic in our cause, representing us and bringing us to God. Undertaking our Cause 1. Becoming a man, to reconcile mankind • Jesus became like one of us, in order to undertake our cause:

For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect (Hebrews 2:16-17).

• But having done that, He leads us also into glory:

For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering (Hebrews 2:10).

• By undertaking our cause, Jesus reverses all that Adam did and does all that Adam failed to do. 2. Establishing Christ’s Manhood • Jesus identifies Himself with mankind:

"I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise" (Hebrews 2:12). "Behold, I and the children God has given me" (Hebrews 2:13).

• Jesus confirms that He lead a life of dependency on God:

"I will put my trust in him" (Hebrews 2:13).

3. Confirming Christ’s Victory in Our Cause • He engaged Satan in his own realm and emerged victorious on our behalf:

...and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery (Hebrews 1:15).

4. Our Merciful and Faithful High Priest • Jesus knows what it is like to live in this world, with all the privations of humanity. He suffered the worst of circumstances, first hand. • Therefore, He is sympathetic and understanding in undertaking our cause before God.

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted (Hebrews 2:17-18).

• There is no hardship of difficulty of ours that Jesus does not understand, even death. Leading us in Salvation 1. Our Pioneer • In His work, Jesus made a pathway of obedience and perfection from cradle to grave, in order to lead us through the same things. • He is our pioneer, who went on before and did what we could never do. Now, we follow behind. • Ultimately, this pathway of triumph went right into the presence of God. He leads us there also, bringing many sons to glory (Heb 2:10). • All who are saved are therefore on their way to glory, in Christ.
