God The Son: Lord, Jesus & Christ
Scriptures Matthew 16:13-16 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Acts 2:36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. Lord 1. Deity • Denotes His supremacy, Godhead, authority, protection. 2. Lord & Jehovah • All of the qualities ascribed to Jehovah (YHWH) of the Old Testament are ascribed to the Lord in the New Testament. Supremacy: Compare revelation 14:17 and Exodus 20:3. Authority: see Philippians 2:11. Ownership of all things: see Psalm 24:1 Worthy of worship: Compare John 20:28 and the Second Commandment. • Old Testament scriptures which refer to Jehovah are translated as "Lord" when quoted in the New Testament. Luke 1:76 quoting Malachi 3. Romans 10:13 quoting Joel 2:32. Romans 14:11 quoting Isaiah 45:23. Jesus • Is the Hebrew form of the name, Joshua. Denotes the Lord in His humanity. Christ 1. Anointed One • The anointed, chosen One of God. • The fulfilment of all prophecy, the promised Messiah. • When somebody was anointed, they became sacrosanct and set apart for the office to which they were anointed. See 1 Samuel 16:13, 24:6. • Christ was anointed as the Prophet, Priest and King in respect of the work of redemption. • Christ was anointed by the Holy Spirit and therefore equipped by Him to do His work.
