Majestic time out Whether you think a true treasure is an old manuscript, a King’s crown, a fine piece of porcelain, or a contemporary photograph, Copenhagen is your host for a majestic time out. By Denise Rose Hansen The Crown Regalia In King’s Garden, a 12-hectare Renaissance park in the centre of Copenhagen, a beautiful castle is surrounded by water: Rosenborg. Rosenborg was one of Christian IV’s many architectural projects, and was intended to be his country summerhouse when built in 1606. Today, the castle is the home of the Crown Jewels. In the basement, you will find the Treasury. The collection is there to be used by the reigning Queen, and was established with the will of Queen Sophie Magdalene in 1746. For the last coronation of the absolute monarchy in 1840, Queen Caroline Amalie had the main part of the Crown Jewels put together in four sets consisting of tiara, necklace, brooch, and earrings. The collection also encompasses Christian V’s crown and an Order of Dannebrog star. (kongernessamling.dk/en/rosenborg) A literary diamond If you want to see Denmark’s biggest diamond, head to the Royal Library — The Black Diamond. Architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen designed the building, with its 2,500-square-metre facade of black granite. The heart of the building is the atrium, illuminated by daylight. Take a trip up the escalator and gaze at Per Kirkeby’s mural, and witness the magnificent coupling of the old and new library buildings. Music composed weekly by Fuzzy emits the impressive speakers to mark 13.00 every day. The exhibition above the café shows beautiful and valuable gems from the library’s collections, spanning the fields of literature, science, philosophy, cartography, and 6

music. Kierkegaard’s letters to his fiancée, a Karen Blixen manuscript, and Hans Christian Andersen’s diary are currently among the displayed objects in the magical room. (kb.dk/en) Shopping like her Majesty Amagertorv is the place to shop like royalty. Royal Copenhagen’s hand-painted porcelain can be found in a beautiful three-storey Renaissance house in number 6. Silversmith Georg Jensen can be found just next-door in number 4. Look out for the iconic Daisy collection, which is immensely associated with HM the Queen, and is a popular choice for women in all ages. When Queen Ingrid gave birth to Princess Margrethe in 1940, Georg Jensen offered her a special edition of the Daisy ring. You will also find Holmegaard crystal and Illums Bolighus in the square. These stores all carry the prestigious words “Purveyor to her Majesty, the Queen of Denmark”.

Still looking for that last souvenir? Head to Gammel Mønt 4 to visit Denmark’s oldest wine trade, Kjær & Sommerfeldt.

Contemporary portraits in a royal setting The Swiss-American photographer Marco Grob is a master of portraits. He has photographed Lady Gaga, Steve Jobs, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julianne Moore, Colin Firth, Kevin Spacey... And HRH Crown Prince Frederik and HRH Crown Princess Mary.

Grob’s work is exhibited at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle until January 2017.

Frederiksborg Castle is located north of Copenhagen, in Hillerød. The grand castle dates back to the early seventeenth century when built by King Christian IV and boasts excellent Renaissance architecture and craftsmanship. The museum within the castle is a rendezvous with kings, queens, and nobles, historical events and epochs that have shaped the country’s history and development from the Middle Ages. (dnm.dk/UK)

Rami, 29, performance artist When I’m travelling to new cities, especially in the summer months, I love to have the chance to take a swim.

The area Islands Brygge is a perfect spot for that. Here, you can take a dip in the harbour to refresh your day, lie in the grass, meet locals, and have coffee and ice cream. The motto on Islands Brygge is ‘relax and enjoy’.

Trine, 28, management consultant One of my favourite places in Copenhagen is the Assistens Cemetery. It’s a beautiful place through all seasons and it fills you up with a sense of calm and serenity –an amazing feeling in the middle of the buzzing Nørrebro neighbourhood!

Maja, 37, designer Cycling through the city on a summer’s day and swimming in the harbour is undoubtedly what makes me most happy about living in Copenhagen! My absolute favourite itinerary: Breakfast at the grocery store and café Alimentari (alimentari.dk) on Islands Brygge.

Jump into the water by the harbour bath! Cycle over Olafur Eliasson’s bridge and buy incomparably delicious natural wine at the pop-up restaurant Knipps Kaj below Knippel Bridge (rosforth.dk/content/knippskaj). Next stop is the legendary store Nørgaard paa Strøget (madsnorgaard.com). Enjoy lunch at Atelier September in Gothersgade 30 (cafeatelierseptember. com). Just around the corner, you can visit one of the ten main Islamic art collections in the West, the David Collection (davidmus.dk). Bring your bike on the train to Galerie Nicolai Wallner (nicolaiwallner.com.) Have dinner at restaurant Spaghetteria in Vester Farimagsgade 2 (spaghetteria.dk). Finally, sleep in the world’s smallest hotel, Central Hotel & Café, in Tullinsgade 1 (centralhotelogcafe.dk).

Hilde, 3, kindergartener Go to the Skydebane Playground (Skydebanehaven, Absalonsgade 12)! I like riding my bike on the hills. There are 3 hills. I start on the big hill in the corner where you can pretend you’re in a fairy tale. My favourite slide on the playground is the red one that goes round and round.

You climb up a rope to get up on the slide, it’s not that difficult. Once I fell and hurt myself on the slide and then grandad gave me an ice cream.

The City Is My Playground The Little Mermaid is legendary because 1. She has great hair.

2. Her friends are talking sea animals.

3. She’s little. Obviously, this means that Copenhagen is a fun city to be a kid and teenager in. Otherwise Ariel wouldn’t still be hanging out here, right? She’d be in Disneyland or something.

Show your folks where the art is at All right, art is pretty cool. But you know what’s cooler than looking at art? Making it. In SMK’s Children’s Workshop, they agree. They have everything you need to show your mum that Picasso is overrated. Bubble wrap. Different kinds of paper and cardboard. Yarn. Crayons. Paint. You can make a sculpture inspired by the summer sun, paint your travel memories, and create your own artist’s book.

Pssst: They have water pistols there. Not your fault if your dad is standing in the way, is it?

Get a break from your parents Grown-ups are nice, but every once in a while you just need a breather, right? Here’s what to do. Go to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art with your parents.

Park them in the Poul Gernes exhibition. Go to the Children’s Wing. You made it. Now exhale.

During the week and on weekends, you can try a lot of different activities, including workshops that are related to the paintings in the museum. During summer, you can attend the Visual Arts School and experiment with artistic techniques and materials. (en.louisiana.dk) Ever heard about a guy called Shakespeare?

This summer, the magical Kronborg Castle turns into a giant theatre stage. And you’re invited!

Shakespeare’s famous characters will all be there, walking around the castle and the courtyard. As soon as you enter the grounds, you are part of the story!

You have no idea who you will meet, or when you will meet them. To be, or not to be … Well, the question is, will you be there? I know Hamlet will.

Art that changes with the weather

A real-life war game I like playing war games on my iPad. But I think it’s even more fun to complete missions in real life. At Mosede Fort, you can explore the fort inside out. You are their new recruit, and your job is to check that no enemies are loitering around the grassy ramparts.

Ordrupgaard has added an art playground to its stunning Charlottenlund grounds for you to engage with sculptures in a way that transcends the usual look-but-don’t-touch dogma of the museum experience. Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson’s artwork Vær i vejret is a giant bronze ring emitting fog in the garden, thus rendering the changing direction of the wind visible, even tangible. As mist blows across the meadow, it hugs everyone and everything it passes, inciting play and movement.

With Vær i vejret, Eliasson has turned the weather into an active playmate.

Johanne, 32, doctor During summer, I love to take in the city by bike. I always bring my bikini and a book, and often start out at Kihoskh on Sdr. Boulevard, where I get some strawberries and a rye bread sandwich to bring along. Then I ride across the Cycle Snake (an elevated orange bike lane, ed.) to the canals and jump in for a swim.

When I’m dry, I continue to Christianshavn looking at houseboats and take in the atmosphere. From there, I go back towards the centre. If the weather fails, it’s nice to drop by Glyptoteket, just to enjoy the light there and read a bit. Then I drive to the lakes, across Nørrebro, through the Assistens Cemetery, and finally back home to Vesterbro. I pass through Skydebanehaven (combined park and playground, ed.) and end the trip with an ice cream at Siciliansk Is in Skydebanegade.

You get to be outside and look at a lot of houses from old times. You can also bring a ball and your lunch and have a picnic. My favourite place to have a juice is at the café Granola (Værnedamsvej 5) and they also have great lollipops!

Kaia, 29, architect When in Copenhagen, you have to take advantage of the combination of salty sea and laid-back city life. Start by hopping on a canal cruise to the Trekroner fortress. On this historic Island, you can escape the city buzz and enjoy the ocean view with no interruptions. Afterwards, take the boat back into Christianhavn and rent a bike. Bike out to Refshaleøen island and enjoy good wine on the dock in front of the restaurant La Banchina, where you can get that authentic local feeling – and a good pasta dish.

Explore the industrial and creative culture of Refshaleøen by bike. At night, go back to Christianshavn and get dinner and wine at either the restaurant Sankt Annæ 8 or at the floating restaurant Bådudlejningen on the canal – they have a good Aperol Spritz for you spritz lovers!

Mishael, 26, Photographer Spend an evening at Café Intime on Allegade in Frederiksberg. Fabled as Copenhagen’s oldest queer pub, Café Intime hosts a cabaret night on Tuesdays and Wednesdays every week where dated Danish (but sometimes French and English) songs are sung beside a grand piano. In a setting reminiscent of a magical 1940s Parisian saloon, you’ll undoubtedly forgive the engulfing wall of cigarette smoke once immersed in the regular singalong to Edith Piaf’s Non, Je ne regrette rien.

Frederikke, 27, communications and history student My favourite places in Copenhagen are the places that are close to the water.

It always makes me happy to stand on the bridge Knippelsbro and look at the Royal Danish Opera House or to sit somewhere along the Copenhagen Harbour and look at all the boats and buildings!

Østerbro: Green Spaces and Contemporary Art 2100 is known as the area Copenhageners move to when they want to start a family. Even though it is located just north of the city centre and geographically holding hands with Nørrebro, visitors often overlook Østerbro. Beat the queues. Walk the cobblestones. Enjoy the vast green spaces, the world-class contemporary art, and the stunning views. Welcome to Østerbro.

A star-shaped fortress The Citadel (or Kastellet) is an otherworldly oasis. With its grassy barbican, deep blue water, historic sights, and pentagram shape, you will not leave this well-preserved monument unchanged. The grounds hold five bastions, one on each point of the star, as well as a church, a windmill, and two bridges. The citadel dates back to 1662 when it was built to complete Copenhagen’s strongholds. Despite its military design, the citadel is one of the most tranquil places in the city. Go here for a run, for an afternoon walk, for a scenic view of the Øresund, or for one of the many free events and concerts hosted throughout the year. (kastellet.info) Exhibition of the rejected J.F. Willumsen, painter and agent provocateur, was dissatisfied with the Royal Danish Academy’s lack of innovative thinking, like many other young artists in the 1880s. Wanting to establish an alternative to the censored spring exhibition at Charlottenborg, Willumsen co-founded Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art in 1891. The Salon des Refusés in Paris was his role model. Den Frie is now hosting an exhibition that marks its very own history (until September 18). Salon Des Refusès is a site-specific total installation by Tina Maria Nielsen, set up in the basement of the building.

The installation will be used as a platform for poetic readings, dj sets, and talks. The basement is explored as a symbolic and historical hide-away, but also a space for contemplation. (en.denfrie.dk) Painting as shooting Faurschou Foundation is a young but prominent art institution with venues in Beijing, Venice, and Copenhagen. The Copenhagen space has previously shown the solo work of Ai Wei Wei and Louise Bourgeois. You have the chance to experience Liu Xiaodong, one of China’s most influential contemporary painters, in Painting as Shooting (until December 16). This is the final part of a series of three exhibitions, which mixes Xiadong’s previous shows in Venice and Beijing. The painter explores pressing issues of contemporary society, such as the dangerous migration across the Mediterranean Sea. Documentary films that follow Xiadong’s projects will be on display. The foundation’s location in North Harbour (Nordhavn) grants you a spectacular view of the sea and the odd architectural design of the UN City. (faurschou.com) Back to nature Fælledparken is a 65,000-square-feet recreation ground perfect for sports and picnics. The park is the neighbour of the National Stadium, home of northern Europe’s largest skatepark, and one of the best places to run in Copenhagen. Kids love the Tower Playground, which features scaled-down versions of Our Saviour’s Church, City Hall, the Round Tower, the Marble Church, and the Exchange Tower. On the border of the park, you will find the Zoological Museum, which is part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark. With more than 10 million specimens in their collection, the museum represents 10 % of the global fauna. (zoologi.snm.ku.dk/english) 15

You can also pay a visit to Bakken, the world’s oldest amusement park Bakken (Dyrehavevej 62), also located in the woods of Dyrehaven. Dyrehaven is beautiful all year round and if you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of deer. If the weather is nice, you can go for a dip at Bellevue Beach (Strandvejen 340), which is close by.

Idalou, 9, pupil I think kids should go the park Fælledparken, because it has two secret playgrounds – the Tower Playground (Tårnlegepladsen, Frederik V's Vej 4) and the Children’s Traffic Playground (Trafiklegepladsen, Gunnar Nu Hansens Plads 10). At the Tower Playground, there are models of real Copenhagen towers that you can climb and play in. Go and explore Copenhagen with your family and then pay a visit to the Tower Playground and look at all the towers you saw. At the Traffic Playground, also in Fælledparken, you can practice your traffic skills/ being out in traffic. During the weekdays, you can borrow bikes and pretend that you’re a real Dane riding your bike around the city!

Or go to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. It’s such a cool place and there’s a children’s room, where you get to make all kinds of art! First, you can walk around the museum and look at all the art and afterwards you can try your hand at making art yourself. You can make art that relates to what you’ve just seen in the museum.

Lyngby: Open Landscapes and Quality Shopping If you take a 15-20 minute train ride north of Copenhagen, you will see everything getting greener and brighter as you look out the window. When you reach Lyngby, you’re in the outskirts of Copenhagen. Here you will find glimmering lakes and forests as well as shopping options, delicious food, and museums to explore. See: Time travel When you enter the Open Air Museum, you have instantly travelled centuries back in time. Stroll along the gravel roads and visit the fully furnished homes of people from the past, such as the peasant, the wealthy miller, the village weaver, or the inmates of the poorhouse. This fascinating time warp is one of the largest and oldest open-air museums in the world.

Shopping: The smell of tea Though Lyngby is not a big city, it has two shopping malls and the main street Lyngby Hovedgade is bursting with shops. Worth a highlight is the hidden gem Chaya. This small shop specialises in quality tea, and the wonderful smell meets your nose as soon as you open the door. If you are looking for top Danish watch design, and who isn’t, visit Palæet and drool over Ole Mathiesen’s clean, simple, and exclusive watches.

Chaya, Lyngby Hovedgade 9A Palæet, Lyngby Hovedgade 37 See: Industrial beauty Just a 10-minute walk from the Open Air Museum you will find Brede Works, located in Denmark’s largest protected industrial complex. The surroundings are divine; ducks and swans swim around in the picturesque lake, and the large garden is full of old apple trees on rows. Inside Brede Works, sound and film bring you an insight into the lives of ordinary people in the transition to modern society through industrialisation, and the impacts it had on daily life.

Eat: Idyllic eating and a quick fix If your stomach screams for food, do not miss Restaurant Brede Spisehus, just next to Brede Works. The restaurant opened in 1893 and the National Museum has carefully and gradually restored the place while ensuring that the original interior, decorative design remains intact. The restaurant has a fantastic view overlooking a small lake and is just pure everyday luxury.

Strolling down the main street of Lyngby, you may find yourself in need of a quick fix to keep up energy levels. Frellsen Chocolate has the best soft-ice for miles around.

15:00 The house of an explorer A short drive from Hundested, The House of Knud Rasmussen is placed on the top of a hill. This is one of the most beautifully located museums in Denmark. Knud Rasmussen (1879-1933) was a Greenland and polar explorer who researched the lives and customs of the polar Eskimos. The house was built in 1917 as his work place.

Today, the house is a museum showing exhibitions about Knud Rasmussen and his numerous expeditions to Greenland. After exploring the exhibitions, take a walk in the wonderful surroundings of green fields and with a view to die for.

The Story of Computers Permanent Exhibition The Danish Museum of Science and Technology In this exhibition, you can view parts of the first computer (DASK) in Denmark. It is as big as a closet!

The museum’s computer exhibition covers the development from the first radio tubes. The slightly older visitors will be able to recognise things like floppy disks and Commodore 64.

The Inventor Ellehammer Permanent exhibition The Danish Museum of Science and Technology Ellehammer (1871-1946) is Denmark’s most famous inventor. In the exhibition, you can experience Ellehammer’s aircraft with folding wings, his helicopter with two rotors, a strangling collar that protects against strangling from

Today, the house stands more or less as it was when Knud Rasmussen lived here on and off from 1917 to his death in 1933.

A Distant War –An Exhibition on the War in Afghanistan Permanent exhibition The Royal Danish Arsenal Museum Sand, shooting and soaring heat.

These are some of the words Danish soldiers use to describe their experience of being stationed in Afghanistan. For the first time in 31

Denmark, civilians are given the opportunity to enter the desert army camps and feel the atmosphere among members of a Danish task force. At The Royal Danish Arsenal Museum, a small section of this distant military zone has been recreated behind sand-coloured protective walls.

Permanent exhibition The Vedbæk Finds Experience local, archaeological finds from all three periods in antiquity: Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. Two unique flint arrows represent the first traces of the Stone Age Bromme people, who were hunting in this area 12,000 and 13,000 years ago.

Another unique find in the exhibition is The Neckpieces from Trørød. The beautiful, bronze neckpieces were placed in a bog 2,800-2,600 years ago, and were found in 1961 during an autumn gardening. Perhaps an offer to the gods?

The Vedbæk Finds – Hunters & Gatherers 7000 years ago

Permanent exhibition The Vedbæk Finds While building a new school in 1975, no less than 17 graves from a Stone Age Hunter-gatherer, people were found in Vedbæk. In the permanent exhibition you will find the hunters themselves, as well as their unique graves and stone implements. In one of the graves, a newborn child is buried on a swan’s wing next to his mother.

Æbelholt Monastery Museum, Hillerød Permanent exhibition Æbelholt Monastery Museum In 1175, the largest Augustinian monastery was built near Hillerød.

The famous French abbot St. William built the monastery to serve as a seminary, a shelter for the poor, and as a hospital. After the Reformation, the monastery was partly demolished. The museum exhibits some of the excavated skeletons showing diseases, living conditions and causes of death in the middle ages. A visit to Æbelholt Monastery also includes a tour of the garden that contains 100 different medicinal herbs.

Heirloom – A living artwork

by Gina Czarnecki and John Hunt Until 28 August 2016 Medical Museion In Heirloom, Gina Czarnecki grows skin portraits of her daughters from their own cells onto glass casts.

When the cells reach the thickness of tissue paper they are removed, preserved, and displayed as framed portraits. Heirloom subverts the notion of the portrait, representing a person, not in paint or oils, but with their own biological material.

As the cells grow, are removed, and grow again, does the link between portrait and sitter lie in the physical resemblance or the cellular material?

The overall story of Gilleleje and the role of its residents in the events of October 1943 is the story of a community that got involved. They helped many Jews into hiding and evacuated them across Øresund to Sweden in fishing boats. It is also the history of the Jews who did not reach a safe harbour.

Peter Carlsen – Portraits

7 September 2016-7 January 2017 J.F. Willumsen Museum The focal point of the exhibition is Willumsen’s masterpiece Sol og Ungdom (Sun and Youth) from 1910 (which belongs to Gothenburg Museum). The painting is a masterpiece in Danish Art History.

Yet very few Danes have seen the picture, as it has not been exhibited in Denmark since 1912. The rehearsal for the painting Badende Børn på Skagens Strand (Bathing Children at Skagen Strand) is often seen as the final work. For the first time it is possible to see the two paintings together and discover the difficult process from idea to finished painting.

Candid artistic interview films, erotic souvenirs, mermaids, and unique quotes from seamen about lust are all part of this fascinating insight into the souls of the seamen. The Dutch multimedia director Saskia Boddeke and the renowned British film director Peter Greenaway have created the exhibition.

Migration Politics: Three CAMP exhibitions at the SMK 10 September-6 November 2016 SMK – National Gallery of Denmark Displacement, border crossing and asylum politics are themes addressed by this three-in-one exhibition. Many of the artists have a migrant or refugee background. The exhibitions are curated by CAMP (Center for Art on Migration Politics), which is Scandinavia’s only exhibition venue specialising in art engaging migration themes. But he was also a prominent figure in the Danish and German theatre world during the late 1700s and the early 1800s. It is the first comprehensive exhibition about Frederik Ahlefeldt-Laurvig and his work as the aristocrat of theatre in the Danish-German borderland.

He is mostly known for his obscure inventions and humoristic newspaper drawings, but his approximately 160 paintings are neglected. The focus of this exhibition is Storm P. as a painter. He was a very original painter; engaged in the currents of Paris, dissident, empathic, melancholic and much more.

The Cells by Louise Bourgeois – a large collection of strange and sensory spatial scenarios – will take over the whole of the Louisiana South Wing.

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) has gained a status as one of the most striking and influential artists of the 20th century. She is also a central figure in Louisiana’s collection, with e.g. her Spider Couple from 2003. The sculpture is from the very year when Louisiana first presented the artist in a retrospective exhibition, and now, thirteen years later, we follow up with a major exhibition that concentrates specifically on another of the artist’s most original work categories: the cells.

Midsummer Dreams

Until 2 December 2016 The Danish National Archives This exhibition shows documents and objects from the 1940s and ‘50s, and tells the story of the generation that grew up in the shadow of the cold war. These young people were not only bombarded with news of an imminent war between the western countries and the communist Eastern Bloc. Many of them also had to do long national military service. On the sideline, a nervous generation of parents were anxious to ensure that the youngsters were not inspired by dangerous ideas from the West or East.

The King’s Forest –The World’s Heritage Until 22 December 2016 The Danish Museum for Hunting and Forestry On July 4 2015, the par force hunting landscape in North Zealand was included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Marie Gudme Leth (1895-1997) was a pioneer in her field. She revived textile printing as an artisanal craft in Denmark around 1930 and created a number of classic textile designs that became immensely popular in their day and still continue to delight a modern audience.
