CURATOR is your guide to navigating the many events, exhibitions, and experiences on offer at the museums of the city. Launched by the association Copenhagen Museums & Attractions, CURATOR is a free magazine aiming at bringing you inspiring ideas and insider scoops on the city’s hidden gems, top spots, and coolest summer events.

This issue features recommendations from locals as well as guides to help you plan your trip. Among the many guides, you can explore the charming neighbourhood of Christianshavn, with its colourful houses and picturesque canals, or check out the hip city of Helsingør in North Zealand, made world-famous as the setting of Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. Go Nordic!

That Nordic feeling is something special: The cool, toned-down colours, the strict yet organic shapes of design icons, and the freshness of locally produced vegetables and meat on the restaurant menus. This guide shows you where to find that Nordic expression in art, design, and food.

By Anne-Sofie Stampe 1. Cool Hammershøi The artist Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) is world-renowned for his interior paintings. Though calm and peaceful, his interiors also hold great intensity. Hammershøi’s paintings are exhibited at both Ordrupgaard and the David Collection. At Ordrupgaard, some of Hammershøi’s best and most famous paintings are on display. The exhibition At Home with Hammershøi shows his exploration of his apartment in Strandgade 30. This is also where the back of his wife Ida came to play an important role in Hammershøi’s art. Danish Design Now The 1950s designers such as Hans Wegner, Børge Mogensen, and Arne Jacobsen made Danish design world-famous, but contemporary designers don’t just follow in their footsteps. They have invented their own tradition and style placing Danish design

in the top of the League once again. Designmuseum Danmark’s brand new permanent exhibition Danish Design Now opens March 2016 and shows contemporary Danish design from furniture and product design, to graphic design and fashion. (designmuseum.dk) 3. Nordic cuisine The Nordic feeling is also to be witnessed at several restaurants focusing on local produce. Noma made Nordic cuisine famous, and ever since it is almost impossible to book a table there. But do not fret: Nordic food can be experienced elsewhere.

City swim The free spirit of Scandinavians and the clean water in the harbour are a perfect match. Topless sunbathing isn’t a rare thing to see, though the youngsters of contemporary Denmark are more bashful than their parents. Amager Strandpark is a beach within the city, offering sand between the toes, kayaking, wakeboarding, etc. From 15 May to 15 September, you can go for a swim in the centre of Copenhagen.

Copenhagen with Kids Denmark is the land of LEGO, and as you may know, it is not only kids who like to play with the famous bricks. Similarly, Copenhagen offers a smorgasbord of fun activities that will entertain the entire family.

Young or old, curious or creative: Let’s play.

By Denise Rose Hansen 1. In the Wake of the Vikings This special exhibition appeals to the craftsman, the sailor, the historian, and the archaeologist of the family. Find out about how the five Skuldelev ships have proven crucial for maritime archaeology and led to experiments with reconstruction and sailing.

Foodies can head straight to the museum restaurant for New Nordic Viking cuisine. From 1 May, you can take your family on a boat trip, or learn the fighting techniques mastered by the Vikings (6-12 July). (vikingeskibsmuseet.dk) 2. Summer of Science Steam engines, vintage cars, and a pewter workshop. Explore all things science this summer, when the Danish Museum of Science and Technology goes that extra mile with a host of activities for kids in all ages, such as a mini train scuttling outside the museum. As always, you can play pilot in a jet fighter, watch a hot air balloon ascend, land an airplane in the flight stimulator, or change the battery of an electric car. (tekniskmuseum.dk) 8

3. The Life Aquatic National Aquarium Denmark is not only Northern Europe’s largest aquarium. It is also a swirling, architectural landmark, inspired by the circulating currents of the whirlpool. With thousands of aquatic creatures to experience, a coral reef, butterflies flying freely in the Amazonas, and daily feedings and activities, the aquarium is intriguing for curious minds of all ages. During summer, the aquarium hosts a Blue Monday Jazz concert at 7 pm. (denblaaplanet.dk) 4. Royal Playtime King’s Garden, or Rosenborg Castle Gardens, is a 12-hectare Renaissance park in the heart of Copenhagen. It used to be King Christian IV’s private garden, and was at the time compared to the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. In the middle of the landscaped park, you’ll find a playground with fairytale-like rides. A café serves ice cream and other treats, and the many benches are great spots for reading a book while the children play. (parkmuseerne.dk/kongens-have)

2. The Danish Museum of Science and Technology features an aviation department with more than 30 airplanes on exhibit, from gyrocopters to helicopters and even an entire Caravelle airliner from 1958.

The Royal Tour If you are fascinated with history, tradition, and all things royal, Copenhagen is the place for you!

Dating back to the Viking Age, the Danish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world, and continues to be an enormously popular institution in Denmark.

Fun fact: Did you know that the reigning Queen Margrethe’s favourite children’s books are A.A. Milne’s stories about the honey-loving bear Winnie the Pooh?

Zealand. At the Danish Museum for Hunting and Forestry, you can explore the exhibition The King’s Forest – The World’s Heritage, which is a great starting point for exploring the beautiful cultural landscape on your own. The landscape was recently added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List! (jagtskov.dk)

Having been passed down through an impressive six generations, La Glace is the oldest patisserie in Denmark – and certainly one of the best! Offering a wide range of delicious layer cakes and pastries, La Glace is an indulgent retreat in the heart of Copenhagen, and is guaranteed to make you feel like a princess. Established in 1870, the patisserie recently opened the doors to its renovated and expanded shop with much of the original furniture, creating the perfect historic setting for a well-deserved break from sightseeing. 1. King for a day Who doesn’t dream of indulging that childhood fantasy of ruling like royalty for a couple of hours? At Frederiksborg Castle, located in the north of Copenhagen, you can get a sense of what it felt like to preside over the land back in the day.

Frederiksborg Castle is a stunning Renaissance castle built in the beginning of the 17th century. The castle’s audience chamber – recently restored to its former 17th century glory – will transport you back to the reign of King Christian V and a time of absolute monarchy, noble privileges, and royal splendour. Also housing the Museum of National History, the castle is well worth a visit – also, be sure to schedule enough time to explore the picturesque castle gardens! (dnm.dk) 2. Majestic workout Seen with contemporary eyes, hunting par force can seem like an incredibly brutal form of hunting. In the 17th and 18th centuries, however, it was considered a noble exercise fit only for the Danish king and his court. Hunting par force meant chasing the deer down with a pack of dogs until it reached the point of exhaustion, after which the animal was killed.

4. Reign supreme If you’ve always felt that being queen was your true calling, now is your chance to get a taste of official queenly duties! Christiansborg Palace, which houses the Danish Parliament and Supreme Court, was actually the principal residence of the Danish monarch up until 1794. In fact, parts of the palace are still used by the Royal Family today – namely the Royal Reception Rooms, the Palace Chapel and the Royal Stables. In the north wing of the palace, you’ll find the magnificent Royal Reception Rooms, used by the Royal Family for official dinners and banquets.

The rooms include the Great Hall and the Throne Room, which also gives access to the balcony on which the Danish monarchs are publicly proclaimed kings or queens. Step out onto the balcony and imagine greeting the crowd! (christiansborg.dk)

The collection of sculptures by the Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen are amazing, the architecture of the old building alone is overwhelming, and the light there is just beautiful.

There’s only room for a few tables, so the atmosphere is very intimate, almost like visiting a private home. The prices are reasonable, but remember to book a table in advance! (osteria16.dk)

I recommend going to the museum Ordrupgaard in the north of Copenhagen – I see it as sort of a little sister to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Ordrupgaard consists of a beautiful, old museum building, and the extension to the building made by star architect Zaha Hadid is a cool contrast. The museum has a lovely permanent art park, and is stunningly situated in the midst of nature. Take your bike for a lovely ride to the museum and combine it with a visit to the forest park Dyrehaven nearby. (ordrupgaard.dk) 13

Andreas, 26, journalist The nameless café (Den Navnløse) on Enghave Plads 6 in Vesterbro is a pretty great place to spend your afternoons. With a cup of coffee and a pastry, and the sunshine streaming in through the windows, there’s such a lovely, relaxed atmosphere.

And they have a daily copy of almost every Danish newspaper out there, a great rum list, and a Ms. Pac-Man machine which works almost every time!

Stroll around Christianshavn. Go down the canal and look at the old, colourful buildings. Go and explore the freetown Christiania where you can grab a cup of coffee and play a game of Backgammon in one of the cosy cafés. In the weekends, you can listen to live music and party in the famous bar Nemoland.

After Christiania, you should walk by the canals to Papirøen (Paper Island), which is home to a big food hall with street kitchens from all over the world. The prices are good and the atmosphere amazing.

Nicholas, 29, nurse Visit the Royal Library Garden. It’s a secret oasis in the heart of Copenhagen; you will often find you have it all to yourself! There’s a lovely fountain and the garden is very harmonious and beautiful – it’s an oft-overlooked part of Copenhagen. Combine it with a visit to The Black Diamond – The Royal Library, or the Danish Jewish Museum right opposite the garden. (kb.dk)

Tine, 30, photojournalist A new discovery for me, even though I grew up in Copenhagen, is Thorvaldsen’s Museum, which is a totally underestimated museum in Copenhagen. You don't have to be an art lover to go there. The collection of sculptures by the Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen are amazing, the architecture of the old building alone is overwhelming, and the light there is just beautiful.

After the visit, go straight to the old restaurant Kanal Caféen by the canal, and order the traditional Danish open sandwich, smørrebrød, with pickled herring, served on sourdough rye bread, and a cold Carlsberg. (kanalcafeen.dk)

Imad, 54, IT developer I like Ordrupgaard, a museum in the north of Copenhagen. You get the feeling that the museum building almost blends in with nature and becomes one with the surroundings. One of the latest initiatives is ØsterGRO – Denmark’s first rooftop farm. Not only are they bringing more nature into the city, the ØsterGRO entrepreneurs have also opened the lovely restaurant Stedsans on the rooftop. So if you’re interested in urban gardening, this place is definitely worth a visit! (oestergro.dk)

My ultimate Copenhagen tip would be to rent a bike. Hotels and bike shops offer bike rentals, but a good alternative to this are the new and improved City Bikes that you will find all over the city. A bike hire is definitely worth it, as public transportation is both expensive and slower than riding your bike.

Ride through areas like Frederiksstaden and the city centre, which are Copenhagen’s most beautiful and well-kept areas displaying parks and classical architecture.

Seek a more modern feel with the new architecture by the harbour.

Bring your bike onto the public bus ferry and ride around Refshaleøen and Papirøen, which are new, more shielded, and creative areas.

Visit Christiania. Make sure to make a pit stop at Christianshavn for a slice of Copenhagen’s best strawberry cake at Lagkagehuset.

On your way back to the city, take the Olafur Eliasson bridge and Cykelslangen. End up in Copenhagen’s cosiest neighbourhood, Vesterbro. Enjoy! (bycyklen.dk, christiania.org))

Christianshavn Coloured, narrow houses, bumpy cobbled streets, cosy canals, a moat and 12 bastions: these are some of the things that make Christianshavn absolutely wonderful and unique. King Christian IV made this part of Copenhagen a fortress city in 1618. Today, Christianshavn is home to René Redzepi’s world-famous restaurant Noma, the freetown Christiania, the Opera House, Olafur Eliasson’s new Circle Bridge, many cafés, small shops, and museums. See: Funky architecture You’ll probably start your trip to Christianshavn by crossing the bridge Knippelsbro, from where you can se both Eliassion’s bridge to your right, and the Opera House to your left.

Much closer than the grand opera building, you’ll find the Danish Architecture Centre (DAC) in a beautiful old warehouse just next to the water. At DAC, you can explore exhibitions about architecture and city planning, and join one of their city tours by foot, bike, or boat. This summer, don’t miss the exhibition 52 Weeks, 52 Cities by Dutch photographer Iwan Baan. Every Sunday, you can join a tour to explore funky new architecture and exciting urban developments in Copenhagen. (dac.dk) Eat: From Nordic to classic A few minutes from DAC, you’ll find Noma. Even if you aren’t planning on eating there, or couldn’t get a table, it’s such a special place to simply walk past, to see where the fuss about Nordic food started. On the back of the restaurant, you’ll find chefs grilling meat in a makeshift shed – nothing like you’d imagine at a high-end restaurant like Noma. If classic French dining is more your thing, visit Café Wilder. You have to try their burger, goat cheese salad, tartar, and crème brulée. Oh wait, you’ll end up stuffed, but it’s worth it. The big painting on the wall also appears on the cover of the popular Danish band Lukas Graham’s debut album. (noma.dk, cafewilder.dk) Shop: Great design On the main street Torvegade that crosses Christianshavn, you’ll find the design shop MUNK. This is such a wonderful little shop with cool Danish and international design.

Everything is specially chosen to fit the Nordic interior style. You will find lamps, furniture, interior accessories, and artworks. You’ll probably want to take it all home. To find something that will fit in your luggage, have a look at the beautiful trays called FRAME by MUNK Collective, or pick a poster from Paper Collective. (munkshop.dk) See: Art from the North North Atlantic House is, like DAC, set in an old warehouse. With changing exhibitions showing artists from the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and Denmark, you’ll experience art in the North from the inside. This summer, they will show an exhibition by sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen from the Faroe Islands until 5 June, followed by beautiful landscape photos from Greenland by Danish artists Jette Bang and Kirsten Klein (18 June – 21 August). Helsingør Quaint pedestrian streets, half-timbered houses, a busy ferry port, and unique historical surroundings all add to the old-world charm of Helsingør, or Elsinore, the largest city in North Zealand. Easily reached by train, Helsingør is a pleasant 40-minute ride up the coast of Copenhagen. The city’s claim to fame is Kronborg Castle, immortalised as Elsinore Castle in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. But the medieval town has much more to offer than the dwellings of the melancholy Dane!

O Captain! My Captain!

You don’t need to have a particular interest in the lives of sailors and other maritime matters to enjoy the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark. The stunning architecture of the building alone justifies a visit! Designed by the innovative architecture firm BIG, the former dry dock has been transformed into a multi-award-winning modern museum situated below ground. Explore the maritime world through interactive exhibitions and games, or take a moment to relax with a cup of coffee in the museum café and appreciate the beauty of the construction. (mfs.dk) Rock the boat Established in 2010, Kulturværftet (the Culture Yard) is an impressive waterfront experience centre and cultural venue dedicated to concerts, theatrical performances, events, and exhibitions. Built in and around the old shipyard of Helsingør harbour, Kulturværftet is a striking combination of industrial history and modern architecture. Also encompassing Helsingør’s main library, the Yard Museum, as well as a bright and airy eatery, the centre is well worth a visit. The weekend brunch is highly recommended and extremely popular – booking a table in advance is advised! (kuto.dk/cafeer/spisehuset/book-bord). If you go for a walk along the harbour, you’ll find the sculpture Han (Danish for “he”), a male counterpart to Denmark’s national icon the Little Mermaid, created by the internationally acclaimed artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset. Kronborg Castle may owe its fame to Shakespeare for making the castle Hamlet’s home in the tragedy about the ill-fated prince. But even without this distinguishing feature, the castle – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – makes for a wonderful day whether it be for learning about a fascinating piece of Danish history, architectural appreciation, or enjoying the scenic view and landscape surrounding the Renaissance castle. Nevertheless, the Shakespeare buffs out there need not despair. Over the course of the summer, the characters of Hamlet will come alive and take over the castle, setting the scene for a theatrical adventure for the whole family – starting 1 June. (kronborg.dk) Go medieval Helsingør boasts a well-preserved medieval quarter with narrow alleyways and uneven, cobble-stoned streets replete with open gutters running down the middle, which used to carry sewage in days of yore. The oldest building in Helsingør is the city cathedral Skt. Olai Kirke (Saint Olaf’s Church), with parts of the cathedral dating back to the 13th century and the height of the European Middle Ages. Just a few minutes’ walk away, Karmeliterklostret (the Carmelite Monastery) makes for a peaceful break. Built in the 1400s, the monastery is now the best-preserved medieval monastery in Scandinavia. If you get tired of the calm, Helsingør’s main shopping street Stengade is only two blocks away. (helsingoerdomkirke.dk)

With this insider guide, we show you where to go for good value for money — nobody will ever notice that you’re out on the cheap!

Start the day at Granola, a nostalgic café located in the bustling Værnedamsvej — probably the loveliest street in the city. Granola offers Danish brekkie favourites: Oatmeal topped with fruit and nuts, skyr (Icelandic drained yoghurt) with honey and granola, and cheese on rye with jam and apples. Death and Afterlife on the Threshold of Rome 19 May - 23 October 2016 Glyptoteket The ancient city Crustumerium was a centre for cultural exchange and played a significant role in the story of the foundation of Rome.

For some 1,500 year, Crustumerium was merely a recurrent reference in historical sources.

When archaeologists located the city in 1975, some 15 kilometres north of the Italian capital, it was

Reunion with the Exhibition “The Code Word Was Haabet (Hope)” 1 June - 31 August 2016 Gilleleje Museum – Museum Nordsjælland The history of the evacuation of Denmark’s Jews in October 1943 is one of Gilleleje’s stories of fate, and has influenced the village both positively and negatively for several generations. The overall story of Gilleleje and the role of its residents in the events of October 1943 is the story of a community that got involved: they helped many Jews into hiding, and evacuated them across the Öresund to Sweden in fishing boats. It is also the history of the Jews who did not reach a safe harbour.

The Moth House 3 June – 23 October 2016 Gl. Holtegaard Gl. Holtegaard’s architecture and dramatic garden act as the point of departure for a new series of exhibitions. The themes for the three pavilions are: Orangery (2015), Menagerie (2016), and Scenery (2017). This year’s pavilion is designed by the young architect Jonathan Meldgaard Houser who has interpreted the menagerie as a house for moths.

Until 5 June 2016 North Atlantic House Experience the sculptures and busts by Hans Pauli Olsen, the great sculptor of the Faroe Islands.

Hans Pauli Olsen was born in the Faroe Islands in 1957. Like few artists today, Hans Pauli Olsen is a master at portraying the human body, a motif that recurs throughout his oeuvre. Clay plays a crucial role in his expression and, albeit to varying degrees, it is always apparent in his busts and bronze sculptures how his hands work with the clay, leaving obvious, tactile traces in the mate.

Finn Juhl’s House 1 July - 31 August 2016 Ordrupgaard Finn Juhl’s own house is a textbook example of Finn Juhl’s intentions as an architect and furniture designer. He built the house on Kratvænget 15 in Ordrup in 1942 on a 1,700-m² property, adjacent to Ordrupgaard park. The house represents Finn Juhl’s interdisciplinary thinking right down to the smallest detail. For Juhl, being an architect did not mean putting the building first, as much as it did attaining an interplay between the interior design, the materials, and the colours.

Hammershøi - Lending and Borrowing Until 23 October 2016 The David Collection The Collection of Danish Early Modern Art will temporarily vacate its usual rooms on February 21st, giving the David Collection the opportunity to present a special display featuring only work by Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916).

Several of the museum’s own pieces by the famous painter will be lent out during the spring to exhibitions in Denmark and abroad. As compensation, the museum will borrow a number of Hammershøi paintings from Ordrupgaard.

Summer at the House of Knud Rasmussen Until 23 October 2016 The House of Knud Rasmussen The house is located in a magnificent landscape in the town of Hundested. It was built during World War I as a place for the polar explorer to immerse himself in his work. Today, the house stands more or less as it was when Knud Rasmussen lived here on and off from 1917 to his death in 1933.

Umiaq – Catch, Craft and Community Until 30 October 2016 National Museum of Denmark The exhibition explores the history of the umiaq – an Inuit boat. For centuries the umiaq was the chosen vessel for Inuit whale hunting and long-distance travelling across Arctic waters. The centre piece is the nine metre long umiaq built in 2005 by Greenlanders at Kofoed’s Skole in Copenhagen. This boat was built using only traditional craftsmanship, and the project is a testimony to the abilities and identity of its builders.

The landscape exemplifies how the interchange of Baroque values in Europe influenced developments in landscape design in the 17th-18th centuries, and particularly bears witness to the influence exerted

Spejderskolen Korinth and Brejning Efterskole Until 31 December 2016 The Danish Scout Museum This a speciel exhibition about a very Danish thing, namely the two “efterskoler” – schools for young people (both boys and girls) in the age group 14-16 years. Spejderskolen Korinth started as a residential school for young girls/guides in 1922 (founded by The Danish Guide Association), and Brejning Efterskole was founded in 1997 by The Danish Guide and Scout Association. 23rd World Scout Jamboree Until 31 December 2016 The Danish Scout Museum In the summer of 2015 the 23rd World Scout Jamboree was held in Japan. The event had 33,628 participants from 155 countries.

Cello Concert

2 July 15-18 Gl. Holtegaard A concert with Andi Otto (cello), Soma Allpass (cello), Lil Lacy (cello), and Merete Smedegaard (dancer). This concert is a double concert featuring at one hand the Germany based cellist Andi Otto performing Fello: Fello is Andi Otto’s unique setup for musical performance. It 51

connects the cello and the computer as one instrument, using the bow as a special interface. The other part of the concert features the two cellists Soma Allpass and Lil Lacy.

Together with the dancer Merete Smedegaard they will make live improvisations in the exhibition space.
