County

Honors Veterans By Tammarrah Pledger Eagle Asst. Editor   The annual Mills County Ministerial Alliance Memorial Day service was held Sunday morning in the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center.   The program began with the singing of “America the Beautiful.” After words of welcome from Pastor Carlos Cloyd, and an invocation by Brother Butch Foster, the presentation of colors was done by Boy Scout Troop #77, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Girl Scout Troop #4095.   “The Star-Spangled Banner” was performed by a community band, and then RC Edmondson spoke, and recognized the military personnel in attendance. Edmondson led the audience in the Pledge to the Texas Flag, and then talked about living in a rural community, and the examples on the farm and in nature of God’s design.   Personal testimony — answering the questions, “Why do I/did I serve my country?,” and “Why do I serve God?” — was given by four veterans with local ties.   Drew Fulk , pictured at right, spoke first talking about his service in the U.S. Navy, saying he decided to enlist in the service because he felt “it was the right thing to do.” He said his service has made him the man he is today, and that his chaplain was a huge influence in his life. He also said he routinely prayed before each operation, and was touched when his comrades would join him. His service has made him a better man, he said, adding there is “no greater pride,” than that which comes See Memorial Day Ceremony 14A

By Steven Bridges Eagle Owner & Tammarrah Pledger Eagle Asst. Editor   The Bridges family weather station located on the east side of Goldthwaite collected 5.5 inches of rain since the wet stuff began falling last Friday. According to the station, total rainfall for 2014 is 8.61 inches so far.   Official City of Goldthwaite rainfall over the weekend was 5.2 inches.   Local rancher Bobby Boykin received 5.4 inches of rain in western Mills County near the community of Ridge since the rains began last week.   John Roohms at Three Mile Crossing got 4 inches, he said.   Bob Garner at Uno Peso Ranch also reported 4 inches.   Jed and Mary Ann Garren at Star said, “We received a total of 3 inches from May 24 to 26, which was very gratefully received since we had missed out on several previous rains in our area.” They emailed again Tuesday to say they had received another inch since their initial report.   Allen Greathouse, who lives near the Brooks Addition in Goldthwaite said he emptied his gauge early Monday morning and it had 5 and 1/2 inches, and he’s received another inch by Monday evening.   “I poured out 3.8 inches total today, Memorial Day, when the rain stopped around lunch,” Roger Featherston said. “Donna and I came from Capitan, N.M., yesterday and from Roswell N.M., there was water everywhere as we came this way. We did not hit rain until Santa Anna, and it rained the remainder of the way. We got home about dark. I do not know when the rain came but the rain gauge was empty when we left on Monday (May 19). I had previously poured

a total of 3.8 inches out of the gauge in the month of May for a total of 7.6 inches.”   Steve Fogle, who lives nine miles southeast of town, had a 4.10-inch total.   “Thought you might like to know we received right at 6 inches beginning during the night Saturday and ending this morning (Monday),” Margaret Allison told us. “Yesterday, (Sunday) we received almost 2 inches in a 30-minute stretch between 4:30 and 5 p.m. We had rivers, lakes and water-

Let Go of Hate

Baptist Church

Hatred and anger are like hot coals, and if you pick them up to hurl them at your enemies you are sure to get burned. All wisdom counsels us to let go of hatred, and tells us moreover that hatred cannot be overcome by hatred. Only love can conquer hate. The Bible tells us to renounce hatred almost as often as it tells us positively to love. Consider the 23rd chapter of Deuteronomy, where God tells the Israelites “Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country.” (Deuteronomy 23: 7) Throughout the Old Testament, the Israelites are instructed in how to live, but finally are told simply that they must have the law of love and mercy written on their hearts. After all is said and done, God cares less for the strict adherence to the letter of the law than to following the spirit of the law, which is love. When in doubt about making a response to someone, we should consider choosing a loving comment. — Christopher Simon   “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.” Proverbs 10: 12

Health Notes By Mike McMahan, R. Ph.

Migraines

Migraines are a big problem that affect millions of people and

are responsible for billions of dollars in healthcare costs. It helps to determine the trigger of your migraines before pursuing treatment. Migraines may be caused by sensitivity to foods such as peanuts or dairy or eggs, Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin) or magnesium deficiencies, a gluten allergy, or hormonal imbalances. Newer studies have shown that migraines may be related to sleep cycles, which can be improved with melatonin. Exercising, eliminating caffeine, alcohol, and sugar; and eating a diet rich in plant foods, especially the broccoli family, flax seeds and tofu as well as other vegetables, and fruits can help to reduce migraine attacks. If you suffer from migraines, ask your compounding pharmacist about customized medications, and natural remedies such as sustained release riboflavin to get you back to feeling yourself again.

State Capitol Highlights

ease Compiled join usby Ed Sterling, Texas Press Association on

Early voting ended May 23 and Tuesday, May 27, was state primary election runoff day.   Voting records available to the public at the Office of the Secretary of State show that turnout is historically low for mid-term primaries and even lower for primary runoff elections. But what’s different about this set of runoffs — and something that should stimulate voter turnout — were the powerful offices at stake.   Tops in that regard was the race for lieutenant governor, the state’s second-highest-ranking executive post. Three of the lieutenant governor’s many important duties are picking committee chairs and members, controlling the flow of legislation and shepherding the state budget as a member of the Legislative Budget Board.   Republicans voting in the runoff for lieutenant governor chose between incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst of Houston and challenger Dan Patrick, a state senator representing northwest Houston. Dewhurst, as lieutenant governor, has presided over the Senate since 2003. Patrick, first elected in 2007, served as chair of the Senate Committee on Education in the 2013 regular session of the Legislature.   The winner will face Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio, a state senator who ran unopposed in the March Democratic primary. Texas Tech picks Duncan

Texas Tech Board of Regents on May 19 announced state Sen. Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock, as the sole finalist for chancellor of the Texas Tech University System. He is expected to resign from the Texas Senate and start in his new capacity on July 1.   As chancellor, Duncan will serve as chief executive officer and will report to the system’s board of regents. Current Chancellor Kent Hance reportedly will become chancellor emeritus at that time.   Duncan, 60, was born in Lubbock, grew up in Vernon, and earned his bachelor’s degree and law degree from Texas Tech. He was elected to the House in 1992 and in 1996 won a special election to the Senate.

Perry writes to president

Gov. Rick Perry, who ran for president in 2012 and may run for president again in 2016, on May 19 posted an 873-word letter he signed and sent to President Obama about energy and the economy.   “You reassured the American people of your commitment to an all-of-the-above energy strategy to bring our nation closer to energy independence while creating needed jobs, ” Perry wrote, and then suggested that the president take a “Texas approach” to create jobs and stimulate the nation’s economy by switching to a less-regulated strategy. That strategy would include such actions as stepping up coal-burning power plant capacities, opening the Keystone XL pipeline and increasing oil and gas operations on land and offshore.

Hurricane season nears

Texas Department of Public Safety on May 19 drew attention to the upcoming hurricane season, June 1 through Nov. 30, and urged Texans to assemble an emergency kit.   An emergency kit, the DPS suggested, should include essential documents, supplies and provisions. And, Texans should:   — Review hurricane evacuation maps and pick routes to safe locations;   — Plan how all family members and pets will evacuate safely and consider any special needs for individuals with disabilities or older persons; and   — Stay informed about changing weather conditions.   In other news, the DPS announced on May 21 that trooper patrols would be “significantly increased” during the Memorial Day holiday, May 23-26.

GHS Tennis Doubles State Champions Kip and Ed Welch   The only UIL tennis state championship in Goldthwaite High School's history was as big a surprise to folks in Goldthwaite as it was to the defending state champions from Aledo who were dethroned.   Brothers Kip Welch and Ed Welch never had played competitively as doubles partners until the year they won the Class 1A state championship some 36 years ago. As it remains today, tennis isn't really a spectator sport until the UIL state tournament in Austin. Most matches are played in front of small gatherings of teammates and parents.   Folks in Goldthwaite had no idea a pair of budding state champs were honing their doubles skills twice daily at the tennis courts behind the First United Methodist Church, where

Kip and Ed's father, Ben Welch, served as pastor for a few years.   "The main thing I remember most from that spring was getting up really early a lot of mornings and playing tennis with Ed before we went to school," said Kip Welch, now a lawyer and businessman in Oakland, Calif. "Then after school, we came back home and practiced again. Sometimes we played during PE class at school. It was an intense burst of hard practice that year.”   The practice was necessary because the two brothers were trying something new as doubles partners. The previous year – their first at Goldthwaite after moving from Bastrop – Ed and older brother Rick Welch played singles. Rick finished third at the regional tournament, just missing a state berth. Kip,

The Goldthwaite Eagle

Catching up with Goldthwaite’s only state champions in tennis 36 years later meanwhile, played doubles with classmate Rodney Scott in 1977.   "Ed and I just decided our best chance to advance very far was as doubles partners," Kip said. "In singles, neither of us played at the level to progress very far. Rick had finished third at regionals the year before, and he was better in singles than either of us.”   Rick had been a senior in 1977. Kip returned as a senior and Ed as a junior in 1978.   Kip and Ed Welch clicked as a doubles team because of their aggressive play at the net. Kip was right at 6 feet tall and Ed was about 5-feet-11, so lobbing a return over the brothers wasn’t easy. Kip and Ed both were athletic, having played basketball, and Ed was an all-district receiver and linebacker in football.   “We cut our teeth on the strategy that the first one to the net wins the point,” said Ed Welch, now a building contractor in Nevada City, Calif. “We spent hours in practice working on returning shots at the net. I don’t think we hit a groundstroke unless we were returning a serve.”   Sometimes, especially when they were receiving service, one Welch brother played at the net while the other roamed the baseline. But when they had the opportunity – especially when they were serving – both brothers rushed the net.   "A lot of times, the other players would get thrown off by a decent serve and then seeing two guys at the net. It forced them to either hit a shot between us or over us. Those are difficult shots to make throughout an entire match,” Kip said.   At the Region II-1A tournament, Kip and Ed upset the defending champions, Scott Sigemon and John Taylor from Aledo.   "The matches with the guys from Aledo were definitely the most difficult," Kip said. "I remember one of them was shorter and the other was taller. The shorter guy had a good serve and good baseline strokes.   "We had a harder time with them, but we just stuck with our game and played at the net. They still had the harder shots to execute."   Two weeks later at the state tournament, the Welch brothers breezed past Reggie Smith and Randy Tipton from Frankston 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals that Friday. Later in the day, Kip and Ed rallied past Dudley Hawkes and Doug Shudde from Sabinal 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the semifinals.   That set up a Saturday rematch with Sigemon and Taylor, who also were the defending state champs. By that time, a rivalry had developed be-

serving TEXANS since 1892.

tween the doubles teams from Goldthwaite and Aledo.   “The shorter guy was really mouthy,” Ed said. “I remember a lot of words coming from him so we really enjoyed beating them. I remember taking a few smacks (hard returns) at the net when we played them. When we got a chance at an overhead smash, we may have aimed at them instead of away from them.”  The state championship match was the only time all year that a crowd showed up to watch the Welch brothers play. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches were played on an intramural court at the University of Texas. The championship match was played at UT's varsity courts, which had stadium seating and, at the time, were located just beyond the south end of Memorial Stadium.   In the rematch, the Aledo players sought to land more lobs over the Welch brothers when they rushed the net.   "It was a harder match for us because of the way they played," Kip said. "We had to return a lot more lobs, which wasn't nearly as successful for us as a return shot at the net. It was a harder match, but we were able to come out on top again."   Kip and Ed won the state championship match 7-6, 6-1 over the Aledo team. The win in the state final was the 11th in a row by the Welch brothers, starting with the district tournament. They won four consecutive matches at district, four at regional and three at state.   “There was a feeling of gratification after putting in all those hours practicing at the tennis courts,” Ed said.   Kip remembers the celebration back in Goldthwaite.   "We had our names on the marquee downtown. I still have a photo of that somewhere," Kip said. "Some of our schoolmates threw a party for us. It was nice to come home and celebrate with friends.   "But to be honest, the best thing may have been that we got to quit practicing twice a day. When you practice so much with the same person, you can get on each other's nerves after a while. Plus, Ed and I lived with each other. We were around each other all the time.   "By the time we won state, we were pretty disgusted with each other."   Ed said that was because Kip was filling out applications for college and looking more toward his future after high school. “I had to force him to practice sometimes, but I was a junior and college seemed like a long way off for me at that time,” Ed said.

For over 120 years, Hochheim Prairie Insurance has focused on providing the best product, price and service to families in the towns and rural areas of Texas. It’s been our privilege to help fellow Texans protect what matters most to them.

Kip and Ed have played doubles together only once since 1978. College and life took them in different directions, but in 1989, they both lived in Berkeley, Calif.   "We were going to play together a little, but the first time out, I injured my knee and had to have arthroscopic surgery. I was also having some back problems. I haven't played since," Kip said.   Ed said he still plays tennis “occasionally.”   If you weren't living in Goldthwaite in 1978 or you didn't know the Welch brothers, you might wonder if their state championship really happened. Not having played doubles together previously, they literally came out of nowhere. The Methodist Church tennis courts where they practiced have been replaced by the church’s Family Life Center.   Kip and Ed didn't perform in front of crowds like the football, basketball, baseball or softball

teams. Ben Welch and his wife, Winn, left Goldthwaite a few years later to pastor at another church. Kip and Ed both moved far away so neither is around Goldthwaite to serve as reminders of their championship.   The plaque they received for winning state sits unnoticed in the trophy case in the old gymnasium at Goldthwaite High School. The plaque reads that it’s for winning the Class A Boys Doubles State Champion in 1978, but Kip’s and Ed’s names aren't on the plaque, and there's no photo of the brothers with a caption to note who won the doubles title.   Even The Associated Press fumbled their championship story in 1978, listing the brothers as "Chip and Ed Welch" in newspapers statewide.   But let it be known that on May 13, 1978, Kip Welch and Ed Welch won what is still the only state championship in tennis in Goldthwaite's history.

Neely Named All-American discus for Angelo State By MIKE LEE Eagle Contributor  Angelo State’s Chesney Neely, a sophomore from Goldthwaite, earned her first All-American honor in track and field Friday, finishing sixth in the women’s discus at the NCAA Division II outdoor championships at Allendale, Mich.   Neely threw 155 feet, 4 inches on the third of six attempts for her sixth-place finish. The top eight finishers at the NCAA championships earn All-American honors.   Her 155-4 was just below her season and personal best of 155-8 posted earlier this year. Neely’s series at the NCAA meet was: 143-0, 154-9, 155-4, foul, 146-4, 132-7. The 154-9 effort was Neely’s third-best throw this year.  While becoming Angelo State’s first All-American in the women’s discus since 2009, Neely beat two Rambelle teammates in the event at the NCAA meet. Ashlie Francis finished 10th with a throw of 151-7 while Emma Thompson was 18th at 130-2.   The women’s discus was won by Tatiana Zhuravleva of Indianapolis, who threw 184-1. The top 10 finishers all threw farther than 151 feet.   Neely, a 2011 graduate of Goldthwaite High School, won the Lone Star Conference championship in the discus earlier this month with a throw of 144-2. She also won the 2011 Class 1A state championship in the discus for Goldthwaite.

Chesney Neely   She is a former college basketball player at St. Mary’s and Angelo State. She switched to track and field last year after getting caught up in a coaching change in women’s basketball at ASU. Neely is a junior, academically, at ASU but a sophomore in terms of track and field eligibility.   Danyelle Dillard of Tarleton State, who won the Lone Star Conference title in the women’s shot put this year, was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA meet, but she didn’t make the final selection list. Dillard finished 18th at nationals in the shot put last year, but was forced to work through an injury-plagued 2014 season.   Dillard is a senior, academically, but a sophomore, athletically, at Tarleton. Her mother, Kelli (Connally) Dillard, is a 1982 graduate of Goldthwaite High, and Dillard still has other family near Goldthwaite.

Lady Eagles Named to All District Team

Submitted by Coach Jess Seward   The Lady Eagle Softball team was represented very well with the end of the year all district awards. The most impressive award for the season was the fact that all 12 varsity softball girls were named academic all district. With the many hours these girls dedicate to softball it is astounding that each girl kept an A average throughout the season. The academic all district award is an award that every parent and student should be truly proud of. On the field awards include:

Predator Association tops talks at Court By Tammarrah Pledger Eagle Asst. Editor   Officers of the Mills County Predator Association gave a detailed report to the Mills County Commissioners’ Court during the Court’s regular meeting Tuesday morning.  Association President Kody Sutherland addressed the Court, saying since he last appeared before them, he had appointed three directors to help facilitate relationships between the association and Mills County landowners.   In Star, Sutherland appointed Ed Sanders; in Priddy, Wesley Peters; and in Mullin, Roger Sanders. Sutherland then turned the floor over to treasurer Gary Bradbury, who talked about finances and gave some statistics for what the association is doing.   Bradbury told the Court the association has to submit $64,800 (or $5,400 a month) to the state in fees. They currently have about $26,700, which will carry them through August and possibly early

September, he said.   He said the association holds two fund-raisers each year, and combined, they typically bring in about $30,000. Bradbury noted the association receives $27,000 from the county, and will make a request for the same amount in the coming budget cycle.   After receiving funds from the county and what they bring in from the fund-raisers, the association will be about $7,800 short for the year, he said, and will try to collect that amount from the association members.   There are approximately 225 contributing members of the association, he said, but there is no set fee that they forcibly collect. They usually ask for 30 cents per acre or a $100 minimum, however. Letters asking for contributions should be going out in the mail in the next 30 to 45 days, Bradbury said.   Annually, the Mills County Predator Association services 155 ranches, Bradbury said. They estimate their two hunter/trappers each put in about 2,000 hours per month. They each work two ranches per day typically, he said.

Last year, the trappers took 399 coyotes, he said. In the first part of 2014, they harvested 240 coyotes. Bradbury said he suspected the increase there was due to more accessibility to helicopter time this year.   Three years ago, the hunters took 78 hogs, and last year they took 169. Based on trends over the first six months of this year, Bradbury said, they estimate they will take a total of 346 hogs this year.   Commissioner Jason Williams noted the association’s report showed they serviced 20 less properties this year than last year. Sutherland said the number of properties changes as land is sold, with some new landowners choosing not to continue with the association.  Commissioner Mike Wright asked if the association had already turned in its budget request, and was told it had.   Commissioner Keith Harper thanked Sutherland and Bradbury for the report, saying it helps them to pass along the information to curious taxpayers.   In other business, the Court voted unanimously to leave the county-wide burn ban off.   The Court also voted unanimously to approve the minutes of the previous meetings, the accounts payable, and the Justice of the Peace monthly report.   During the commissioners’ requests and reports, they all talked about routine road work and vehicle maintenance.   Harper reported the county will be able to get some road material from the construction/demolition crews currently working on the new Goldthwaite Elementary School as soon as June.   Williams also reported that he attended a recent meeting with officials from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and that he learned Regency Bridge (the swinging bridge) is scheduled to be closed this summer for maintenance. He said he was told maintenance will start in mid-July and should last about 70 days.   Giving the judge’s report in Judge Kirk Fulk’s absence, Williams said TxDOT officials will have a meeting on the improvement of FM 45 from San Saba to Brownwood on June 17 at the Goldthwaite Airport terminal building.

Ebony Community Meeting held   Members of the Ebony Community Center met on Saturday, May 3, for their monthly meeting and covered dish dinner. Recent elections resulted in the following slate of officers: Liniel Click, president; Terry Fischer, first vice-president; Harold Everett, second vice-president; JoAnne Correll, treasurer; and Joanne Frueh, secretary.   Terry Fischer called the meeting to order and thanked hosts Shirley and Freddie Wendlandt. Gary and Vicki Eicher introduced their guests, Olga Maceri and Travis Miller. New Neighbors Debbie Wyse and Kirk Andrews were welcomed also. Celebrating her birthday on this date was JoAnne Correll, and Vicki Eicher was looking forward to hers on the 27th.   JoAnne Correll gave the treasurer’s report and announced a gift from the Ebony Cemetery Association. She also discussed the ongoing problems with the electric bills, but Dwight Reagan has facilitated the installation of a new meter, which will hopefully result in more reasonable bills. The empty can collection was recently taken for reimbursement, and members were encouraged to keep collecting aluminum cans to help with Center expenses.  An ongoing community service project is the collection of canned goods for the food bank in Goldthwaite, and members were asked to bring

Psalms 27:4-5

One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.

John 15 9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain:

that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. 17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

AG ROUNDUP EPA rule could hurt farmers, ranchers

by Mills County Extension Agent Tom Guthrie RAINWATER HARVESTING PROGRAM   Rainwater harvesting is an old concept that is gaining in popularity again. In Texas it is important to capture every drop of water that we can. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Mills County will be hosting a Rainwater Harvesting program on Thursday, June 5th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Mills County State Bank Community room. John Smith, Extension Program Specialist, of College Station will be on hand to present the program. Please RSVP no later than June 4th if you plan to attend. Registration fee is $10.00.   Educational programs of Texas AgriLife Extension Service are open to all people without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information or veteran status. TEXAS BEEF CHECKOFF REFERENDUM SET FOR JUNE 2-6   Texas beef producers can soon vote in the upcoming Texas Beef Checkoff Referendum June 2-6.   Voting will occur at all Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices during regular business hours the week of June 2nd – 6th. The statewide election is being conducted by the Texas Department of Agriculture in accordance with provisions of the Texas Agriculture Code.   If passed, the producer managed program would be financed through a refundable $1 per head assessment at each point of sale.   The money would be used for promotion, marketing, research and educational efforts of beef and beef products in Texas, the U. S. and/or internationally. Funding decisions would be made by the Beef Promotion and Research Council of Texas whose members would be appointed by the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture from nominees submitted by the Texas Beef Council.   Eligible producers can vote at any AgriLife Extension office regardless of where they live or where their cattle are located. Producers may vote as individuals or as a legal business entity. Youth younger than 16 years old must have a parent or guardian co-sign their ballot. Any producer, regardless of age, who has owned cattle in Texas any time between June 6, 2013 – June 6, 2014 is eligible to vote in the referendum. A non-producer (i.e. dealer, order buyer etc.) is not eligible to vote in the referendum.   If passed:  – Assessment collection would begin Oct. 1.   – A producer who has paid an assessment to the Texas

Beef Checkoff may obtain a refund of the amount paid by filing an application for refund with the Beef Promotion and Research Council of Texas within 60 days after the date of payment.   – The Texas Beef Checkoff program differs from the current U. S. Beef Checkoff in two ways, though the Texas program may complement and extend the U. S. Beef Checkoff efforts. First, the U. S. program requires half the revenue be paid to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, but all the Texas Beef Checkoff assessment would be managed by the Beef Promotion and Research Council of Texas. The second difference is the Texas Beef Checkoff assessment is refundable.   – Individuals are considered “non-producers and are exempt from the proposed assessment if they own cattle for less than 10 days or serve as a dealer or order buyer in the sales transaction. Non-producers are also ineligible to vote in the referendum.   For additional information on the Texas Beef Checkoff and the referendum, contact Lance Williams, Texas Department of Agriculture, P.O. Box 12847, Austin, Texas, 78711 or call 512-463-3285 or visit http://texasagriculture.gov/.

Farmers and ranchers from Mills County are telling Congress, “It’s time to ditch the rule. The campaign is aimed at a new rule proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Clean Water Act (CWA) that would essentially give EPA additional regulatory authority.   “If this rule is enacted, the implications to farmers and ranchers could be devastating, Jerry Rountree, County Farm Bureau president,

Correction   Luke and Olivia did not go to compete at UIL State as a tech team, as was erroneously printed in last week’s edition of The Eagle. They went to State as individuals for UIL Academic Computer Applications. Luke placed first at Regionals, and Olivia placed second at Regionals, which earned them a spot to go to State. It is not possible to go to State as a team in Computer Applications. The Eagle regrets the error.

“He who runs from God in the morning, said Paul Bunyan, the author of Pilgrims Progress, “will scarcely find Him the rest of the day.   In other words, if we want to sense the presence of God, the guidance of God and the strength of God throughout every minute of every hour of every day, we must begin the day with God. Rarely do we begin any day without some idea of the things we intend to do, where we plan to go or what is expected of us. And although we may not go through a formal planning process where we establish priorities and allocate certain amounts of time for each of them, we have some idea of what we are going to face.   That is why David, in his infinite wisdom that came from God said, “Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord.

said. “The rule would allow the agency to take the phrase ‘navigable waters’ out of its definition of what can be regulated under the CWA. Without the ‘navigable’ clarification, the EPA would have power over all bodies of water including the water standing in my field or running in a ditch after a rain.   The ruling could have implications for homeowners, builders and businesses as well.  “Ponds, drainage, seeps and other areas where water stands would all come under EPA regulation, Rountree said. “This could give the EPA authority to tell us what we can or cannot do on our farm, home and businesses.  Additional information about the Ditch the Rule campaign and EPA’s proposal is available at DitchTheRule. on 85 head. We are seeing more calves coming to market along with cull cows. We’ve had some rain around the area but not enough to get us out of trouble. If you have cattle to sell, give us a call. We will market them to our buyers in advances. Give us a call and THANK GOD FOR THE RAIN!

Goldthwaite High School 2014 State Qualifiers

Pictured above are students along with their teachers and coaches who qualified for State level competition in academics, athletic,VASE, FFA, robotics and other extra curricular activities during the 2013-2014 academic school year.

Juel Ann Holtzclaw presents the PHE Technology Award to Gaston Meade.

Juel Ann Holtzclaw presents the Chris Elam Comer Award to TR Jones.

Luke Krueger received the Houston Stock Show & Rodeo Mills County Area Go Texan Award.

Hayley Wilson received the Mills County Area Go Texan Scholarship.

Krueger’s academic efforts pay off   Goldthwaite High School senior Luke’s Krueger’s steady string of academic achievements will likely take him far.   In addition to being awarded an $18,000 Go Texan scholarship this year, he was also awarded a $9,000 Valedictorian scholarship, a $750 scholarship from Mills County State Bank, and a $400 Band Booster scholarship.   In his essay, which was part of his application for the Go Texan scholarship, Luke writes:   “The hidden mechanics of the computer is beyond their outside appearances. Knowing this, I crave higher education to the point of wanting to know almost everything about computers and programming. A lifetime may not be enough to accomplish this goal, but I am ambitious and determined.”   Though he did not receive a scholarship from the Terry Foundation, even being invited to interview for one is fairly prestigious. Luke said he interviewed for the Terry Foundation scholarship in April, and suspects he did not receive it because he had already accumulated so much in scholarships.   The Terry Foundation, according to its Web site, “is a Houston-based scholarship program founded to provide scholarships to outstanding Texas high school graduates and transfer scholars for attendance at public colleges and universities within the state. Established in 1986 by Houston philanthropists Howard & Nancy Terry, the Foundation has assisted thousands of Terry Scholars in meeting the Founders’ goal of helping Texas college students to help themselves.”   Luke also has an impressive history of competing at UIL. This year was his third time to compete at state in computer applications. This year he earned 6th places at state, and he received second and 7th places in years prior. He is also a member of the GHS Marching and Jazz bands.   He plans to attend Texas State in the fall to study computer science. Luke is the son of Mark and Patricia Krueger.

Bridging the Gap... by Georgie Bridges

Pictured above are Sarah and Carson Barrett, our California grandkids. Wow! Sarah is growing up fast. She is now 11 years old.

California Time Again

One of the projects at her school was to do a state parade float. She picked Texas, of course, they love it here. They want to stay a month with MiMi and Papa in Goldthwaite. If you look closely at Sarah's float you will see the plastic longhorn on the top. She borrowed that from Carson who bought it here at the Mills County General Store some years back. The floats depicted various agricultural products grown in Texas and other points of interest like the soldiers at the Alamo. Some of the students made their floats on top of remote control vehicles; boys mostly, or they used wagons, or skateboards, like Sarah did. All the students pulled or guided their floats around the asphalt school yard for everyone to see.   The day was just like most California days with bright sunshine and clear skies. It amazes me that plants and flowers grow so profusely there with limited water. Robert has a beautiful back yard with caladiums as big as a dinner plates, blooming roses of all colors, honeysuckle growing wild; he has cut it back numerous times; grape vines with clusters of tiny new grapes, his orange tree has thousands of baby oranges; the tree will not be able to hold the fruit. I have one climbing Wiseria climbing plant and it looks yellow and undernourished. I will have to feed it something just to keep it alive.   Next school year Sarah will go to a school called Churchill. She has been accepted into this accelerated baccalaureate classes at this school. The family attended one orientation session learning about the classes the kids were going to have to take. In Sarah's sixth grade group the students each had to pick three out of four foreign languages to take this coming year of school to see how they score in the class. She checked Chinese, Spanish, and French. As they continue at the next school year they will take the language that they did well in.   During our visit we got to see Sarah play basketball. She scored four points for the team. Sarah is a lot like her mother and is not very aggressive but she is showing some promise and even fouled one time, unintentionally, but even so she did foul. I was surprised. There was one girl on the opposite team that was a bulls eye free show shooter. She didn't miss. I was impressed. I did not get to see Sarah shoot a free throw. There was a lot of fouling during the game but the officials, coaches on the various teams, did not call much. I played basketball in high school, the half court kind. I think it was a better game for ladies, but then, I am of the old school.   Papa and I got to watch Carson play baseball, which was Thursday evening after we had already left to come back to Goldthwaite, he caught two fly balls while playing second base to put the batters out. Most of the time the boys avoid a fly ball because they are afraid but the coaches are building confidence and it has worked with Carson. Robert also helps Carson with drills, ball handling, catching the fly balls, and batting.

Stuart and Family Visit

Stuart and Amy and one of her girls, Savannah, came for the Memorial Day weekend. They are doing well and busy working and taking care of her girls. Blake and Cody spent the weekend with their mother at a family reunion but Sunday afternoon Cody showed up so we got to visit with him. He has made some friends here and enjoys Papa's barn where he welds and makes things. Cody will graduate this Thursday in Arlington so we will be there. Seems we are on the go all the time. Frank has a golf tournament this weekend at Horseshoe Bay. His first round is 1:00 on Friday so we will hurry back so he can get to bed and sleep hard so he will be rested for golf. This tournament includes a group of his friends from Fort Worth and other areas of the state. He will get to see his friend, Perry Hoover, who always comes to this event.

Memorial Day Service

Stuart and Amy and Savannah attended the Memorial Day Sunday service at the First Methodist Church Family Life Center. The place was packed and if you attended you got a blessing from the beautiful songs we all sung and the personal testamonies from the wars and from their relationship with God.   When Gary Farley spoke I don't think there was a dry eye in the place. If you weren't touched by him you are a hard nut to crack. I loved it. Thanks to the Mills County Ministerial Association that puts this annual event together. If anyone is interested in donating to this group who helps people with food, utility bills, and lots of other things, please send to: MCMA, PO Box 91, Goldthwaite, TX 76844.

Flint says... BOOM!

We have all enjoyed the rain, but not all of us have enjoyed the lightning and thunder that accompanied the showers. Steven told me that Amber has been using the thunder as an excuse to crawl into bed with he and Debra at night.   After one big thunder strike last night, Steve watched Amber on her video monitor shoot out of bed and head for their room. At the same time, Flint simply sat up in bed and said, “The sky says... BOOM!” Flint then laid back down and began snoring again. We all had a good laugh about it.

Mills County Memorial Day Ceremony from serving his country. He also said he thanks the Lord every day for bringing him home safely.  Korean war veteran Billy Hale also spoke, detailing his time working in the motor pool after being drafted into the Korean War. He recounted some humorous stories about his service, and also talked about how difficult and lonely it was when he was stationed with a Korean unit, as they did not speak English, and he did not speak Korean.   Gary Farley also gave his testimony, having served as a medic in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.   Farley recalled a story of being able to save a man’s life during his service, the man claiming to be an atheist. That neardeath experience helped Farley to witness to the man. Farley said he encouraged the man to thank God for saving his life by telling him that God put him there as a medic, and that it was God, not Farley, who saved the man.  John Paul Spurlock, who served in the U.S. Navy in the early 1990s, talked about his service, saying it was his grandfather (also a veteran) who inspired him to serve in the military. He said he was “humbled by the sacrifices” of the veterans who came before him. Regarding his service to God, Spurlock said while he could talk at length about the ways God has worked in his own life, ultimately serves God because “He is our sovereign Lord.”   Each man offered thanks for being able to speak at the service Sunday.   Glenn Murray gave the

benediction, but before he did, he spoke briefly about his own service during the Vietnam War. He also talked about his experience after getting home, saying that for a long time he avoided the Wall Memorial. When he finally did see it, he said, the “unknown” honorees began to weigh on his heart. He asked local American Legion Post Commander Duane Rawson to play “Taps” in dedication to those unknown and their families.   Scriptural reading was given by Tim Birkner, who read from John 15:12-17:   “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. This I command you, that you love one another.”   The community band played musical selections, including, “I Met a Soldier,” “Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone,” “Thank You, Lord,” the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and ended with “It is Well with My Soul.”   (Editor’s note: If you were unable to go to the service Sunday, an audio recording of the service is available online at GoldthwaiteEagle.com.)

Band Notes By Susan Reynolds GISD Band Director   What an amazing couple of weeks since I last wrote an article! I hope you’ll forgive my foregoing the forage of this formidable fodder. (tee-hee! It was fun coming up with that last sentence!) In other words, there’s been a lot going on, and I’ve neglected telling you about it. Why? I only have the normal, predictable excuse. I’ve been busy.   So, let us review. The Spring Concert was May 12. There were about 400 people in attendance, and I’m still hearing compliments on how well the kids played. The interesting and most flattering thing said was repeated several times: “It’s amazing how much better each group was; how they improve each year!” Well, folks, that’s what happens when parents don’t allow their kids to quit. Ok, I’m off my soapbox, now. It was a truly wonderful concert. What a fitting way to end our tenure of concerts in the gym! Next year, we will be playing in the cafetorium at the new elementary school on a real stage! It’s so exciting!   Last Thursday was the GISD Fine Arts Department First Annual Mystery Dinner. It was awesome! The art department supplied the set for the theater department’s “Whodunnit” play, and the music department created the ambiance with the jazz band playing some hits from the 40’s as well as some contemporary blues. I even got to play with them! So much fun. At this time, I don’t know how much money we made, but I know that about 150 tickets were sold and somewhere between 120-130 people showed up. The food was fantastic, too! I would like to say a great big “THANK YOU!” to Shelley Williams for heading it up and to Kathy Gist for the set.   Monday is the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, or TSSEC. The contest is at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville. While the rest of the country is grilling and fishing, Savanna Esse and Lorissa Eicher will be twirling at state. Good luck to these girls!   Now, for some recognitions. We started a program in 6th grade this year called Band Ninja. A total of 10 belts must be earned before the Ninja headband can be attempted. In order to become a Band Ninja, the students must complete all 10 belts, plus earn a Division 1 or 2 at the solo contest at HPU, and memorize the Concert E-Flat scale, the Concert B-Flat scale, the Concert F scale and the Chromatic scale. There were four students who accomplished all of this: Savannah Head, Kylee Medina, Jessica Horton and Lane Dowell. Congratulations to these fine musicians.   This year’s Golden Eagle Band Awards are as follows: Most Improved Freshman – Taylor Tully Outstanding Freshman – Dakota Busby Most Improved Sophomore – Randy Martin Outstanding Sophomore – Savanna Esse Most Improved Junior – TJ Spies Outstanding Junior – Guillermo Torres Most Improved Senior – Dakota McCoy Outstanding Senior – TR Jones and Luke Krueger Outstanding Musician – Ryan Miles Outstanding Section – French Horn with Ryan Miles, Andrea Lane, Nate Thomas, Ethan McCaig and Nana Amponsah   Next year’s drum majors are Andrea Lane, Lauren Stiff and Ryan Miles. The GHS twirlers are Savanna Esse, Bailey Stiff and Kaley Dowell. The GMS twirlers are Taylor Jamison, Savannah Head, Christian Weber and Kaitlyn Baird.
